Over the past 22 years, Big Agnes has strived to build an industry-leading, global brand focused on People, Product, and Planet. These three principles have guided us through the years and every part of our process. This year though, we’re elevating our principles, passion, and drive to a whole new level.

In 2023, we are bringing the stoke to your gear collection. This year we welcome new, innovative products created with more recycled materials, PFC-free treatments, and lower energy and water requirements during the manufacturing process. Our new lineup includes air pads, the Crag Lake SL tent, and the Anthracite and Greystone sleeping bags which have been thoughtfully designed to include a range of recycled materials. These new products and practices reflect our passion of bringing you better outdoor gear without slapping mother nature in the face. Our three US facilities are powered through 100% renewable energy offset programs that reflects another way we’re making moves for our planet.

Cruising into the next year, themes of inclusion and equity are among our top priorities. You will see a push for more diverse stories from all over the globe. These goals have inspired the expansion of our Ambassador Program with new and unique voices from the trail.

Big Agnes has always focused on making quality products built to last with sustainable attributes. Through the years, we’ve incorporated recycled materials into our supply chain and encouraged the reuse and repair of our gear. Starting with the Big Agnes gear repair team in our early years, our positive environmental impact has only grown stronger over the last 20+ years and continues to grow. We have a long history of donating returned products to displaced communities in Colorado. As part of our continued sustainability efforts, we upcycle returned sleeping pads and focus on innovative products made from recycled materials like our new Crag Lake SL. As we move forward, we are committed to doing our part to be kind to our beautiful planet.

The Big Agnes Repair Team

From day one, Big Agnes has been dedicated to keeping gear out on the trails. The Repair Team patches tent tears, straightens poles, and fixes zippers. In 2022 alone, this hard-working team saved gear for over 6,000 customers and sent out 1,500 gear parts for in-field repairs to help adventurers keep exploring comfortably and sustainably.

Their Only Portrait

In 2015 Federico “Fede” Cabrera jumped on a bike with some DIY bike bags, his Fly Creek UL2, a camera, and an idea. The goal wasn’t a fastest known time or sweeping landscape photography but something so much more personal. After a fire nearly destroyed all his personal photos, it became clear to Fede how pre cious those memories are. Across many of the impoverished areas he traverses, Fede realized even in the age of smartphones folks often do not have one portrait of themselves or their families. Thus, the Their Only Portrait project became a reality. Cycling thousands of miles across rural South America from his home base in Buenos Aires, Argentina Fede brings his digital printer and camera to provide families with what may be the first and only photo ever taken of them. As Fede visited villages across the varied landscapes of South America, it became clear that many do not have access to clean water or electricity. For this reason, alongside his camera and printer, Fede carries donations of solar lights and water filters. Though relatively small and self-powered, the kindness he shares is impactful. Since he began this undertaking, Fede has since upgraded to a Big Agnes Fly Creek Carbon tent that has allowed Fede to carry even more donations to his off grid locations. Fede has also professed his love for the Pluton UL40 sleeping bag. “In 2019, I spent a month exploring ancient Inca Trails. A few months later, I flew to Cuzco Peru and I rode back home (it took me 3 ½ months to cover 4,000 miles back to Argentina). And just before the year ended, I took a bike-rafting trip to Tierra del Fuego for another month.”

Breaking Trail For The LGBTQ+ Community

Having never backpacked,

Cal “Starburst” Dobbs (they/he) set out on the Appalachian Trail in 2018. As a first-time thru hiker, Cal reflects, “I was a fearless optimist, but I made a lot of mistakes that undermined my enjoyment on trail.” After completing the AT, Cal returned to their fulfilling job as a teacher. However, this first thru hike made them hungry for a re-do with lessons learned along the way.

Like many of us, when The Pandemic hit, Cal began to reprioritize, “I would be a hypocrite if I showed up to class each day and told my students to honor their wild and crazy dreams if I didn’t do the same.” After finishing the 2021 school year, Cal headed southbound on the Continental Divide Trail (CDT).

Many thru hikers along the CDT had never knowingly met a trans person, much less a trans hiker. With all “the firsts” to Triple Crown, no one could name a trans person to claim this title. “I knew in that moment…that I had to complete the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT)the final jewel in the Triple Crown… so people would see a visible and vocal advocate for the LGBTQ+ community outdoors.”

On August 9, 2022, with the help of their favorite Copper Spur 3, Cal successfully completed the PCT claiming the title as the first transgender Triple Crown finisher. With this accomplishment, Cal has helped others in the queer community feel more welcome and included on the trail. “I see the trail community changing and it’s encouraging to be a part of the effort to move the needle towards love and inclusion.”
