WHAT MATTERS MOST

We started Big Agnes 20 years ago with a back-of-the-napkin dream - build better gear for sleeping in the backcountry. The plan seemed simple; provide a comfortable night of sleep and people will come back for more. As the saying goes, ‘any good expedition can be planned on a napkin’. Fair enough, but we’d like to tweak it and add BUT expect the unexpected. None of us could have predicted the effects as we endured a global pandemic. But as the snow melted, summer emerged and we left our homes we were all pulled by the common thread that unites our community - the urge to be outside. Finding inspiration in micro-adventures closer to home, backyard family campouts, and solo time in the backcountry became our new normal. Simple hikes became exciting. Campfire light provided hope. Distanced banter around camp warmed our spirits. This return to activity helped fill the void but wasn’t a replacement for the bonds we create when we are getting after it ‘normally’ with friends and family. We were reminded that being outdoors is what matters most and that having the right gear is critical. Knowing we have the outdoors back again this year, we want to extend a heartfelt thank you to each of you – as loyal customers you helped us push forward, you got outside, camped a lot and had some of the best nights out under the stars ever. Facing adversity we didn’t shut down, we got lean, we dug deep and emerged with a renewed focus on innovation, reducing our environmental impacts, and are more motivated than ever to share our stoke with you. Looking forward to our next 20 years, our mission (we actually wrote it down recently) hasn’t changed but has evolved and we are ready to meet the challenges ahead. We’ll keep moving forward with our goal of outfitting all people with the gear needed to camp comfortably, explore the backcountry and have fun. We can’t wait to see you on the trail. - The Crew at Big Agnes 2

BIG AGNES SYSTEM

20 YEARS AGO we launched Big Agnes with the ultimate camp comfort in mind: never roll off your pad again. The original System bag was tested in our backyard, the Mt Zirkel Wilderness, under the shadow of Big Agnes, a 12,000’ peak. 20 years later it’s evolved into an innovation-leading bag that’s still tested under the shadow of Big Agnes and across the globe.

FLEX PAD SLEEVE

CUSTOMIZE YOUR SLEEP SYSTEM: Select either a 20 or 25” wide pad to sleep on

DON’T FORGET YOUR PAD: Insulation that would normally be compressed and lose its insulating properties is removed from the bottom of the bag. This saves weight and uses the pad for insulation.

EASY ON: quickly pull the sleeve over your pad in the comfort of your tent

CUSTOMIZE YOUR PAD FIRMNESS: Sleeve design allows for access to pad micro adjustment

O ur luxurious car camping Park Series system bags can accommodate pads up to 30” wide.

F or the ultimate couples camp experience, try a doublewide system bag with up to a 50” (127cm) wide pad

THE WARMTH IS IN THE DETAILS. Comfort and warmth in the backcountry, your backyard, or anywhere you choose to rest your head for the night is the key to an overnight outing being awesome. That’s why we’re committed to making sleeping bags that mimic your cozy bed at home as much as possible with the highest quality, lofty fills, and soft, technical fabrics; sustainably sourced as often as possible.

D OW N F I L L When regular down is exposed to moisture, it loses its ability to insulate. We use DownTek™ Water Repellent Down that stays dry 27 times longer than regular down. DownTek™ is RDS Certified, bluesign® Certified, PFOA and PFOS free. New for 2020, scan the QR code on our Downtracker tag to view the unique origin story, certifications and properties of the down inside your Big Agnes sleeping bag and apparel.

All of the down Big Agnes purchases for our products comes from an RDS Certified supplier. The Responsible Down Standard aims to ensure that down and feathers come from animals that have not been subjected to unnecessary harm.

SYNTHETIC FILL

A proprietary synthetic insulation developed by Big Agnes to provide excellent warmth to weight ratio along with compressibility and loft.

100% post-consumer recycled polyester, low denier fibers that are tightly woven and provide high loft, compressibility, high weight-to-warmth ratio and durability.

Multi-denier, short-staple fibers with high loft to efficiently trap heat. Silky fibers provide a soft feel and great compression for packability.

A multi-denier, hollow-core insulation that provides loft, structure, warmth and durability.

50% post-consumer recycled, multi-denier polyester insulation with a blend of hollow and solid fibers to maximize comfort, loft and warmth.

A high-peformance insulation with the full spectrum of features to brave the elements.

SALLY HOUSE Senior Designer at Big Agnes

Did you know that on average, women feel colder at different temperatures than men? At Big Agnes, we’ve validated this claim from our own field testing and worked to create women’s specific bags that will keep you warm through all of your outdoor pursuits. Our women’s regular bag differs from our regular size sleeping bag in both shape and insulation density. We found that on average, women have narrower shoulders, larger hips, and smaller feet. With these factors in mind, our sleeping bag designer, Sally Gentling House shaped the bags to work more efficiently for the intended user. We also offer a women’s petite bag, which is smaller in volume and shorter in length to accommodate shorter, smaller-volume campers. “After extensive research on the physiological differences between how men and women sleep, and countless nights sleeping in prototypes on my own, I believe we have achieved the ideal balance between boosting warmth without adding unnecessary weight. Our women’s bags only get added insulation where it matters, for example, a little more in the foot box and torso can make a big difference.”

Pro-tip! Warm up your feet before getting into your bag; do jumping jacks, run in circles while brushing your teeth, and put on dry socks. Your body is what heats your bag, so your bag will heat up faster if you go to bed warm. Remember, a properly fitting bag will provide the best thermal regulation for your best night’s sleep in the dirt. Choosing the right bag is not easy. Let us help with our Sleeping Bag Finder, linked on page 9.

C ELEBRATE WITH US ALL YEAR

AD

EEK S E R U T VEN

ER

We started hiking around 1p.m. on a sunny afternoon, our packs stuffed to the gills for an overnight fly-fishing mission, pun intended. The destination - a couple of lakes in the Holy Cross Wilderness of Colorado. We moved up the trail at a decent pace, but in the distance, we kept an eye on the dark clouds that crept over the adjacent peaks. Inevitably, the first few drops of rain pattered on our brims. It became clear very quickly that we were in for a good old-fashioned, Rocky Mountain, midsummer deluge. And so it goes, on any adventure, one of us forgot an important piece of gear - a rain shell. Traditionally Bryson and I center our weekend trips around mountain biking, so when we made plans a couple of weeks prior, we had our ride all mapped out... until about midnight the night before our departure, although it was still no excuse for the forgotten rain gear. First things first, we set up camp and then got to work rigging our fly rods so we could throw some casts before the sun disappeared behind the surrounding peaks. After getting skunked by wily brook trout, we retreated back to our tents while another alpine system made its way through. The catch of the day was a net full of beers, now perfectly chilled to high alpine lake temps, a victory we could both get behind. Soaking up the stillness as we boiled water for dinner, I turned to Bryson with a thought, “if traveling with all of your gear on a bike is called bikepacking, and walking with it on your back is called backpacking, then wouldn’t this be called fishpacking?” Bryson grinned, laughed and took a sip of his beer, acknowledging that my reasoning seemed logical enough. We awoke to bluebird skies, brewed our coffee and went back for round two. Back at the water’s edge, Bryson demonstrated exactly what the word redemption means and landed a fish seconds after his fly hit the water. As I watched him rope in fish after fish, I fumbled my way through tying basic knots and throwing amateur casts. Finally, I reeled in a beautifully vibrant brookie. I was hooked. We spent hours pulling fish out of the lake and enjoying the morning sun. As the afternoon clouds began to build, we broke camp and enjoyed our last beer with lunch, rolling the cold cans on our sun-chapped faces. We may have unofficially coined a new sport or recreational activity that weekend, but whatever you call it, fishpacking has officially been added to the rotation of our epic summer adventures.

RY U X U L ARE A

Recently, I’ve been practicing NOT making campfires at camp and instead using warm clothes, warm drinks, and warm conversation to deepen my outdoor experience. This is a personal choice and by no means do I intend to push it upon others. However, this one question I ask myself can be a useful tool for anyone when deciding on making a campfire for the night, “Just because I can, does that mean I should?” If you are venturing out and are planning on having that traditional campfire experience, here are a few tips that will allow you to do it responsibly. 1. Always read the local and state regulations BEFORE your trip. Look for the area’s permanent rules and any temporary or seasonal regulations that may be in effect. By checking this information before you venture out, you can adjust plans and preparations accordingly. If there is a fire ban, bring a few extra layers and down blankets to keep you snug. Carry extra fuel for your camp stove and keep the hot drinks at the ready. 2. If regulations allow for a campfire, do so in a responsible manner that respects the land and surrounding area. If you’re car camping or river tripping, bring your own fire pan so that your fire does not scar the area and you can pack out the ash and debris. If backpacking, consider the environment on which you are creating a campfire. Always use an established fire ring, there is no reason to construct a new one. 3. Never leave a campfire unattended or with coals smoldering. Always ensure campfires are completely extinguished and pack out ash and coals. 4. Burn only dry wood, never trash. All trash, food waste, wrappers, etc. should be packed out in accordance with Leave No Trace Principles. All wood should be locally purchased or harvested from dead and downed branches or trees. Keep it small and only burn what is needed. Remember, no campfire, no problem. Unless you are cooking by fire or in a survival situation, a campfire is not a necessity, it is a luxury. The more we can honor our public land by using them responsibly, the greater the enjoyment for all.

THINK GLOBALLY, ACT LOCALLY Public lands are like family and for me, they play those same archetypal roles. From the wise grandparents that encourage you to pause for reflection to the strict parent that insists you follow the rules and respect the order of life. The loving aunt who cares for you, reminding you of the beauty that exists, and the raucous sibling egging you on to climb higher, test your limits, and push further. While the land teaches us so much, it is also in our care. Despite the rugged nature and resilience of the land, it is still vulnerable and at risk to today’s modern man with our use and overuse. Like a family, the land loves and provides, however it is not infinite. I often repeat the motto “think globally, act locally”. As a public land owner, I seek to be a good steward by being a kind, responsible trail user both at home and abroad. I volunteer for local trail work days and I donate to local trail and conservation organizations in addition to purchasing my annual hunting and fishing licenses. I practice treading lightly by choosing responsible camp sites and staying on designated trails. I always travel with a pocket or sack to pick up trail litter. While the local efforts help my community and my own peace of mind, they are not always reciprocated by rest of the world. It is my hope that more individuals will work collectively to influence positive global trends of conservation and responsible land use. To do this I recommend seeking out connections to the larger organizations, politicians, or actions that mimic your efforts at home. Find out if your elected congress person or senator promotes land conservation and preservation and how you can support them or those officials that do. It will take work and effort, but it is our responsibility. We owe it to our land, our family, and we owe it to the generations of Public Land Owners to come.

COPPER SPUR COLLECTION

The Copper Spur Series remains a constant orange beacon of dependable shelter on the trail and in campsites around the world. Since its award-winning debut in 2008, we’ve evolved the design by shaving some weight and enhancing features that continue to make this collection a fan favorite over the years.

“WE’VE BEEN STOKED ON THE COPPER SPUR since Big Agnes conceived the line. We logged more than 200 nights in our classic UL2, including our thru hike of the Appalachian Trail. In 2014, we upgraded for our thru hike on New Zealand’s Te Araroa, where we logged about 100 nights. Longevity is the reason we keep coming back. Between 50mph wind, torrential deluges and unrelenting sun, our Copper Spurs have seen, and outlasted, it all. Now that we’re living in Alaska, 10 years later, our Copper Spur HV2 Expedition is our go-to tent of choice.” – Patrice and Justin La Vigne @patricejustin

What does Solution-Dyed mean? Solution-dyed fabric is produced from yarn made from pre-colored chips of nylon or polyester verses fabric made from uncolored yarn which is then colored. Imagine a carrot vs. a radish. One is colored throughout and one is only colored on the outside.

What are the fabric benefits? • Solution-dyed yarn is highly resistant to UV fade and shade changes. • S olution-dyed yarns are more colorfast – up to two grades higher - and more resistant to multiple washings.

RIV E H T T E ERB

ER

It was hot and sticky, Minnesota in mid-July. Our two Alpacka rafts and oar-rig raft were beached on the shoreline. We were camped at the tip of a small island in the Cannon River, which snakes through the Southeast part of the state, eventually joining the Mississippi. My oldest son, and our paddling partner Brooks were discussing hiphop and horror movies. It was almost story time for my seven-year-old and Brooks’ three-year-old daughter had long since faded towards dreamland in their tent. “Does anyone wanna bet on a storm tonight?” I asked. Our storm radar agreed with Brooks and the boys, but I had sensed something more was lurking beyond the clear sky. I wagered with the group that around 3am a system would move through; however, this intuition didn’t stop me from climbing into my tent sans fly. We also never settled on what was in the pot for the winner. I awoke to a roaring gust of wind and my tent folding like a standing wave. Another gust. Then another. Dry lightning. Next to me Charley didn’t stir. I jumped out of the tent to get the fly on. I ran down to the river’s edge to gather more driftwood for stakes. When I got to the shoreline, I knew immediately that the wind had stolen something, but it took me a minute to realize exactly what. Brooks was up and out re-staking his tent. I yelled through the wind, “My raft is gone!” The closer I looked at the beach, I started to realize it wasn’t just my raft that was missing. After the tents were secured, we went to the tip of the island and shone our head lamps out into the darkness. The beams sweeping back and forth turned up nothing. But then on the second pass I caught a glimpse of red on the far bank. Without missing a beat, I jumped in the river. I reached the far bank where my raft was patiently chilling in an eddy. I half expected it to crack a smile on its bow and ask, “What’s with all the hurry?” I thought of my own song lyrics. “Don’t push the river, it pushes itself.” I swept the bank for any of our other missing gear. Nothing. Back on the home side, I lashed all three of our boats together and climbed in the tent soaking wet. At sunrise Charley and I were standing on the beach looking downstream while I explained what had transpired during the night. Suddenly he interrupted me, “Dad I see my pfd!” We grabbed my raft and floated downstream. Sure enough his pfd was caught in a strainer, then he spotted mine, and then my paddle. Like a puzzle, piece led to piece, and in the end, we recovered all our gear. While packing up the boats I remembered having glanced at my phone to see what time it was when crawling back into the tent after rescuing my raft. 3:43am. While I may have won the bet, it seemed the river gods had humbled us by returning our gear, jackpot!

For most of my adult life, I have been able to travel and adventure all over the world. This year has been a unique experience to say the least with little travel, but plenty of homegrown adventure. The pandemic slowed the pace of our constantly moving lives, and we were able to savor simple camping trips close to home. We met up with our friends Adam and Kara, who also have two tiny humans about the same age as ours. The kids all seemed to gravitate towards each other as they explored the soils and foliage that the beaches of Seward, AK has to offer. Each family quickly identified their campsite and went to work building the temporary homes we would absorb over the next few days. I set up the Big Agnes Dog House solo while my family tended to other camp chores. Tent setup is always faster with an extra hand, but with the right balance, I tackled this one easily by myself. Since we were camping close to home, we decided to live a little more luxuriously and break out a fullon blow-up mattress. It was a win for our little family of four, while surrounded by noises and the movements of moose, bears, and other Alaskan fauna. After setup, we relaxed and hung out with our friends, cracked open a beer and simply enjoyed the familiar company and surroundings. On an average year, we might be doing the same thing halfway across the globe. We reminisced on the past and excitedly discussed the future when this would all be over. We also realized that in the present, we were still in control of our attitude and mindset. It’s easy in these situations to allow ourselves to get lazy and aggravated, but with the right mindset we could still achieve simple things, like this moment on the beach with our families. We continued our relaxed pace and explored some of the trails with the kiddos, then decided to call it a night as the midnight sun remained high in the sky. During the summer in Alaska the sun only sets for a cat nap and is back before you know it, shining bright to remind you to get up and adventure. The next morning, we made breakfast for both families before setting off on an Alaskan beach day. The beaches here are black and the water is cold, but the views are absolutely epic, something we’ll never tire of. The kids got lost in playing for hours as the adults mingled and laughed at how unexpected our lives have become. We carried on many weekends this way while summer came and went and our homegrown adventures reminded us that this one life we have, is a good one.
