ERASMUS+ NEW PROJECTS AND CHALLENGES

KEY COMPETENCES & CLIL We talk about experiences and projects carried out in different subjects and VET modules!

NEWS WE TALK ABOUT THE LATEST NEWS AT THE SCHOOL Let's see who or what was the protagonist of this first semester!

ERASMUS+ MOVE YOUR SCHOOL Find out EVERYTHING about this new project in which IES P. Jiménez Montoya takes part, along with schools from Belgium and Norway

The objective of the project ‘MOVE YOUR SCHOOL’ is to convince students and teachers to embrace the advantages of an active life and to corporate physical exercise in their daily routine. The initial need for this project was born out of different elements: : international research, a survey among pupils and teachers' observations.

On the one hand, this project wants to test the suitability of mobile devices in the combat against ‘pupil- and teacher immobility’ through the promotion and implementation of apps that promote a healthy and mobile lifestyle. On the other hand, the project wants to employ peer to peer ambassadorship to create a bigger interest in physical activity

The digital world, which forms the framework for modern pupils life, stimulates and creates a lack of physical activity in their young lives. Also teachers take less physical exercise on a daily basis than before.

The activities of the project will result into 5 miniprojects within the project 'MOVE YOUR SCHOOL': "Move your apps", "Move yourself", Move your structure", "Move your family " and "Let's move others"

During this first semester, students and teachers have participated in several international meetings, as part of the Erasmus+ projects implemented in our school. At the moment, the school is involved in 4 projects addressed to Secondary and Baccaularate students, apart from the initiatives which focus on VET students and taking their internship abroad.

BILINGUAL IMMERSION DEVELOPING 21ST CENTURY COMPETENCES

in this section we will have a look at examples of good practices within the context of bilingual teaching at our school: CASE-STUDY 1 Subject: Philosophy Year: 1 Baccalaureate Unit 5. Scientific Worldviews (Paradigms). Skills: Listening/Reading/Speaking Resources: Video "the Elegant Universe" by Brian Greene’ Brief explanation: This activity is part of the agenda we are developing in Philosophy classes for Year 1/ Baccalaureate. The specific set of activities we deal with revolves around the unit Scientific Worldviews, which is part, in turn, of the content block "Scientific Knowledge and Epistemology". Activity development The activity consists in screening some fragments from a documentary by Brian Greene, tittled The Elegant Universe: The Einstein’s Dream.

KEY COMPETENCES & CLIL: EXPERIENCES AND PROJECTS. 1. Firstly, we look through the key words or phrases appearing in the video and which can be considered important or which are not familiar to students. 2. The first task that students have to carry out is watching and listening carefully to the documentary, which lasts around 10 minutes (with or without English subtitles, depending on the skill we want to improve the most and on the students' level of English).

3. In a third step the language assistant reads several short paragraphs that have been previously listened to by students. If our students have a low level of English, we can screen the paragraphs. 4. Once the language assistant has finished reading the paragraph, the teacher asks students a simple question about that paragraph. The students have to answer according to what has been read and the teacher may ask them again and the students might seek clarifications from the teacher.

LESSON PLAN ARTICLE BY ISIDORO LASO

5. In the next session, once the students have become familiar with the content, it is possible to consider a variant of this exercise. As we can see from the second set of paragraphs, the teacher has underlined some words from each paragraph, and the student’s task, in this case, would be to form and pose a question referred to the underlined content. Then, a classmate should answer in a proper way. As one can notice, three skills are involved in this activity: listening, reading and speaking at the same time, as well as reinforcing the learning by repetition. (Apart from that, students are exposed to two different accents at least: the video and the language assistant).

Exercising the writing skill. If we want them to practice their writing skills, we can consider the possibility of carrying out two additional tasks: a) We can pick out one or two paragraphs that the language assistant will read to the students in a sort of dictation. (Surprisingly enough, they like this old fashioned task). b) We can ask them to write down the main idea of the paragraph which has just been read. Then, the teacher can ask any student to read what he or she has written.

In order to meet Secondary students' interests and needs, the bilingual programme offers two itineraries: a) Itinerary 1: only two subjects are taught partially in L2 (English); there is a preference for the more practical and less complex, in terms of lexis or content b) Itinerary 2: three or more subjects are taught partially in L2 (English). The approach used is known as CLIL , i.e. Content and Language Integrated Learning. It involves learning the subject -content through a foreign language

MATT YOUNG OUR LANGUAGE ASSISTANT

If you want to know more about our language assistant, read the following bio: My name is Matt Ayson Fraser Young and last October I joined the team at Pedro Jimenez Montoya all the way from Auckland, New Zealand. Fun fact Granada is actually the furthest city from Auckland in the entire world. It would take me three flights and roughly 27 hours in the air to get home (much to the disdain of my grandparents). Back home, I lived a very different life to that of a teacher. Since graduating from university in 2012, I've worked in corporate public relations primarily with brands such as Xbox and Lightbox (which is New Zealand's version of Netflix). Outside of the office I’m a very keen sportsman and love cricket, rugby and golf. All three of which have proved very challenging to find in Spain.

KIA ORA KOUTOU (“HELLO EVERYONE”) IN TE REO MĀORI – THE INDIGENOUS LANGUAGE OF NEW ZEALAND) . My decision to come and experience the Andalusian culture for a year stemmed out of a holiday here a couple of years ago. I initially travelled to London - both for the Rugby World Cup, and to experience the city. I had planned to do the “quintessential” Kiwi thing and take up a twoyear working holiday in London. However, instead of falling in love with the UK, I fell in love with Spain instead. Everything from the food, the language, the people and the crazily bizarre things you lovely people do, such as eat dinner after 9pm. I’m normally starving by 7pm!

I’m sad to say I only have a few months left in the wonderful town of Baza before I move onto the next adventure (wherever it may be). I’m going to miss all the incredible people I’ve met on my journey. And please, if you’ve plans to make it to New Zealand one day, don’t hesitate to ask for my contact details. I’d relish the opportunity to show some Andalusian friends around the beautiful land of the long white cloud. And seriously good coffees!! E noho rā Matt

VET & INTERNSHIPS VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Discover your talent! First European Vocational Skills Week This first European Vocational Skills Week took place on 5-9 December 2016 with events in Brussels and hundreds of activities in Member States, Our school joined that celebration and organised several activities to inform the school community, and especially Secondary and Baccalaureate students about the possibilities available at IES P. Jimenez Montoya in terms of Initial Vocational Training and internships abroad. The title chosen for the information campaign was "Vocational Training: Discover new perspectives and incentives for your future", in reference to the Erasmus+ project "Europe 2020: offering new perspectives & incentives for young people".

Celebration of Andalusia Day by Office Administration & Business Management students On the occasion of the Day of Andalucia, 1 and 2 Administration students have carried out several projects including research on the presence of Europe in Andalusia and of Andalusia in Europe, design of infographics on Technological Parks and important Andalusian companies as well as reflection on the needs and wishes for the future of this region. The results of this reflection were exhibited on a huge poster, with Andalusia's flag as background To top it all off, there was an Andalucia's day food tasting
