75% Miss Par 3 Greens

fter working at par 3 holes for six hours per day every other weekend, May through July, and measuring how close players hit shots to the pin during qualifying for the Cable Dahmer Cadillac of KC $100,000 Hole-in-One contest, it dawned on me — we should track how many golfers actually hit the green on par 3s. I suspect that most golfers view par 3 holes as an opportunity to post a low number on their scorecard and maybe record an ace or birdie. However, with the help of Mike Hull who tallied every shot made during our qualifying rounds, we discovered that the vast majority of golfers don’t hit the green. Our data proved (at least to us) that par 3s are anything but easy for most weekend golfers. During our ten qualifying dates at four different courses, we tallied a total of 780 golfers (many took 2-4 shots) who participated in qualifying, plus the golfers who did not. In all, golfers hit 1,000+ shots at the par 3 holes, which ranged in yardages from 130 to 165 yards. Of the 1,000+ shots, only 25% (250 golfers) landed on the green. Of the shots landing on the green, only 10% of the golfers (25 golfers) parred the hole. Based on our data, most golfers who landed on the green averaged a full stroke over par (4). Of the 75% (750 golfers) of golfers who missed the par 3 green and had to chip-on, the average score was two over par (5).

Why are par 3s so difficult for average golfers? For one, golf course architects tend to design trouble around par 3 greens like sand bunkers and making pin locations less accessible. However, at the courses we recorded data, pins were accessible, and only a few greens had sand bunkers near. It seemed to me that if the pin was set near the front, most golfers came up short of the green — poor club selection. If the pin was placed near the right-side of the green, most golfers missed the green to the right. For the most part, I believe that if the majority of golfers would use more club than their ego tells them, focus less on the pin itself and hit the shot at the middle of the green, their average success rate of scoring a par (3) would dramatically increase. I’m not a golf pro and not qualified to give tips; however, a wise golf pro once gave me this golf tip about par 3 holes. The pro asked, “How many times do you hit the ball to the exact yardage you think you do with your 6- or 7-iron? Maybe one out of every 10 times? The rest of the time, the ball is coming up short. I advise my students to select the club that if they hit their best shot [on par 3s], it will fly to the back portion of the green. So, if they slightly mis-hit the ball, it will still end up in the middle or even the front of the green.” Say you have 150 yards to the flagstick and that’s as far as you hit your 7-iron, then chances are you’re going to come up short. Take one more club and hit your 6-iron with the confidence that even if you hit it perfectly, you’ll, at worst, find yourself putting from the back fringe. You don’t always have to try to stick-it next to the hole; you’ll walk away with more pars if you hit your tee shot to the middle of the green and two-putt from there. Next time you approach a par 3, consider the data and aim towards the middle. 6

GOLF HUMORIST DAVID FEHERTY at KAUFFMAN CENTER AUG. 10

ne of golf’s best known personalities and humorists, David Feherty, is coming to Kansas City.

A former PGA professional turned golf analyst, broadcaster and talk show host, Feherty will present a two-hour show “David Feherty Off Tour – Wandering Around On His Own” at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts Friday, August 10, at 7:30 p.m.

Feherty is best known for his on-course commentary, post-tournament interviews at PGA tournaments and as host of a weekly hour-long program entitled “Feherty” each Monday evening on the Golf Channel. In addition to interviewing virtually every top PGA professional, Feherty has interviewed and played golf with presidents and other well-known celebrities. On Feherty’s live one-man show, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wrote: “David Feherty was uproariously funny. It was two hours of zaniness and madcap storytelling, People were coming out of their seats with laughter.” Golf Digest concurred: “Uncensored and unhinged and worth the price of admission. It really was stupendous.” A native of Northern Ireland, Feherty spent most of his playing career in Europe where he won five times and finished in the Top 10 twice in the European Tour’s Order of Merit. A member of Europe’s 1991 Ryder Cup team, he spent 1994 and 1995 playing the on the PGA TOUR in the U.S. and finished his career with combined earnings exceeding $3 million. The First Tee of Greater Kansas City Outstanding Participant Award Presented

T

he First Tee of Greater Kansas City recognizes local high school student for outstanding achievement with the Frank Kirk award. The award is presented to a junior golfer for “The Life Skills Experience,” mentorship of younger participants, leadership on and off the golf course, being a positive example of the Nine Core Values, and volunteerism for The First Tee. This year, this honor was awarded to Julia Stopperan. Julia Stopperan (photo on left), a recent graduate of Shawnee Mission East High School, has been involved in The First Tee of Greater Kansas City for over ten years. Julia is an ACE participant (the final stage of the First Tee that involves four projects), actively volunteering in The First Tee as a student, coach and speaker at multiple events. Stopperan will also participate in The First Tee’s Par 3 Championship this year. The Championship is a national First Tee opportunity where 32 juniors (16 girls and 16 boys) from across the country come together to compete at the Kanawha Club in Virginia. At Shawnee Mission East, Stopperan led by example inside and outside of the classroom. With a 4.53 GPA, Stopperan was an Advanced Placement Scholar and Kansas Honors Scholar. On the golf course, Stopperan and her teammates won the 2015 state championship and finished runner-up two times. In her senior year, Julia was awarded 1st team all-conference and 2nd team all-state honors. Julia is also a standout volunteer, as she planned two charity color runs, assisted at St. Luke’s hospital and volunteered at the Johnson County Christmas Bureau. For the The First Tee of Greater Kansas City, Stopperan was an active participant in classes, leagues and tournaments over the last ten years. She coached for two summers at the Tom Watson Golf Academy with the PLAYER classes and the Life Skills and STEM camp. She volunteers yearly at the Watson Challenge and the Kansas City Golf Show. She has impacted the lives of many hundred participants through volunteering and coaching. She spoke at the Day for Kids Tournament and the Beyond the Fairways Brunch about her experience in the program and the life skills application in her life. She, along with her sister, was awarded $500 to give to the First Tee through the Junior Board, a school organization where students create projects to compete to raise money for non-profits. The First Tee will help Stopperan continue her great work in the community by awarding her with a $2,500 grant to further her charitable endeavors as she sees fit. The First Tee is a youth sports organization that introduces kids to the game of golf and its inherent values, and positively impacts their lives. Golf Courses Desperate for Rain Water by Bill Cromwell une and July were extremely hot, but worse for golf courses was the record-setting drought conditions, which we’ve not experienced for many years.

Normal water level here.

Stone Canyon Golf Club: This photo taken on July 2. You can see the water gushing out of the pipe in center of photo. That’s city water pouring in at an estimated $13,000 per week rate. The top of the bank/pipe is the normal water level. Nearly all courses within the Kansas City area are experiencing severely low water levels with irrigation lakes. This means the only alternative to keep courses green/alive (unless spring-feed), is to purchase city water and pump the high-priced water into its irrigation lakes. I’m fairly confident that no course wants you to feel sorry them

Shamrock Hills Golf Course. Photo of one dry irrigation lake taken on July 15. Three of the lakes at Shamrock looked to have less than a foot of water in them. However, greens and fairways, looked fabulous. (photos by Bill Cromwell) with regard to water woes; however, you might be sympathetic to their plight. Patronizing such courses will help cushion the huge water bills, and understanding of the dry/brown grass in the roughs and other critical areas when you play. If you watched The Open Championship (Carnoustie), then it was obvious that certain areas in Europe were also experiencing similar rain-water shortages. Talk about brown, hard fairways and long drives! Are we a bit spoiled here in the old USA with our demanding plush green turf? The pros playing in The Open did not seem to mind brown fairways, which were as fast as the track at Indy. Remember, there is a plus side to dry/hard ground. If you dream of hitting a 400-yard drive like at Carnoustie — now is the time to do it! Your ball will roll forever right now. That’s always fun! 

Golfers Flock to the Big Shot Charity Golf Challenge Charity Event’s Revenue Soar High

C

by Bill Cromwell

harity golf tournaments are conducted nearly every week during the prime golf season at nearly every course in the Kansas City area (or nationally for that matter). It is well documented that golf raises more money for charities than any other industry. As golfers, we should all give ourselves a pat on the back for paying the extra cost to play in such events and supporting these worthy causes.

For example; what is the draw for golfers to pay $150 at a golf tournament to play what is usually a $45 round of golf? Well, it will be tough to attract players or sponsors and get them back next year, if your event is simply same-old, same-ol’ with basic closest-to-pin, long drive and putting type contests — Borrrring! Among the many ideas Blankenship already implements to increase participation and charity revenue at tournaments, he also constantly looks for new innovative ways to build fun into the tournaments that employ his Metro Golf Event Consultants services. For the past three years, Blankenship has offered a fun game called Launching 4 CharityTM, which is a dart/golf ball shot out of the Pro LauncherTM to the mix of services for tournaments as a revenue generator. The dart/golf ball is fired out of an air-operated custom-built golf ball shooter with player and course safety in mind! It’s absolutely safe to use on course, and players flock to the shooting station, happy to donate $40 per team so each player can take a shot. Players absolutely love it! Blankenship rebranded the game this year calling it the Big Shot Charity Golf ChallengeTM. “I think the new name is more applicable for what we are doing,” he said. “When golfers see what we are doing, they can’t wait to take their ‘Big Shot’ shooting a golf ball nearly 400 yards to be closest-to-the-pin and win a great prize. People really love it.”

Players absolutely love the Big Shot Charity Golf Challenge. It’s absolutely safe Blankenship says, “Over the last three years to use and relatively quiet when fired. Balls are propelled by air. If done correctly, the event will run smoothly from check-in to the awards ceremony, golfers and sponsors go home happy and look forward to supporting the event again next year. Ne w Golf Equipment

Junior — Golf Clubs Our Future Golfers

W

e all love the game of golf and enjoy the many benefits that it offers. We also understand that for the game to grow, new golfers need to join the fun. The group that represents the largest possible number of new golfers are the juniors. They are the future of the game! There are many good reasons to introduce youth to golf. Juniors learn etiquette, how to handle successes, failures, develop lifelong friendships and it is great exercise — away from screen-time. When junior golfers enter the game, he/she is not unlike any other new golfer. They need to have fun and enjoy some level of success to want to continue. A large factor in that success is the equipment that they will use. When a young golfer tries the game of golf they need to have proper clubs which fit their swing. A parents’ clubs are typically too long, and the shafts are too stiff for a junior to swing. Often adult clubs are cut-down for the young golfer. However, cut-down clubs may be a usable length, but the shafts become even stiffer when shortened. Unfortunately, if the young golfer does not have clubs that give him/her the best chance to succeed, they are more apt to be frustrated and give up on the game. There are many reasonably priced junior golf club options on the market that will enable your junior golfer to enjoy the game. US Kids Golf is the leader in youth golf and equipment with a commitment to provide clubs that fit all youth age groups. When young players play with clubs that fit, they quickly develop proper golf swings that can last a lifetime. The proper club length and weight are the keys to solid fundamentals — that’s why players are fit into US Kids Golf clubs based on height, not age. US Kids Golf offers three lines of golf clubs designed to offer options for every skill set: Yard Club, Ultralight and Tour Series. • The Yard Club is a super-lightweight club that’s designed to give the right start when first playing the game. It features an oversized head that provides more hitting area that helps get the ball airborne. It also has a training grip to learn proper hand position. Designed for beginning players who want a great training club. • The Ultralight series is designed for players who have played some golf, but may need a lighter club to improve clubhead speed. The young golfer is developing skills such as putting, chipping and pitching. • The Tour Series is for intermediate to advanced junior golfers. It offers technology that is expected for serious players. 12

As I mentioned, U.S. Kids Golf clubs are measured by height and not by age. This is very important, because we all know that kids of the same age will often vary in size and height. Your local pro shop should have U.S. Kids Golf measuring equipment or charts found on its website, www.uskidsgolf.com, to fit the junior golfer properly. Don’t cut corners on fitting your junior golfer with the correct clubs for them. Sets price range from $99.99 to $169.99 Tour Edge Golf is another very good source for junior golf clubs. HT Max-J Junior sets by Tour Edge suggests fitting juniors by age and by height. New OP Golf Course Clubhouse Highlights $8.3 Million Project

Fine dining, indoor hitting bays, expanded practice areas at Sykes/Lady Editorial by Alan Hoskins

K

ansas City’s busiest golf course is about to get a whole lot better. If things go as planned, Overland Park’s Sykes/Lady Golf Complex will have a sparkling new state-of-the-art clubhouse in March 2019. It’s the focal point of an $8.3 million project that will also include a full-service restaurant with fine dining (in-door and outdoor), patio, indoor hitting bays, expanded practice areas, new parking and a whole lot more. The new clubhouse complex located at 12501 Quivira Road with Kansas City-based PGAV Architects as the designer.

full-service restaurant with an indoor/ outdoor bar, league conference room with A/V equipment, an enclosable room with a fireplace for small meetings and banquets and a tournament patio area. The indoor seating includes a fireplace, and the outdoor seating with fire pits. Golf carts and indoor hitting bays will be housed on the lower level. In total, the new clubhouse will have 21,770 square feet of surface including 11,480 square feet on the upper level. The lower level will include 8,075 square feet for cart storage and 2,315 square feet for the hitting bays.

Perhaps best of all, it won’t cost taxpayers a dime. “It will be self-sustaining,” says longtime General Manager Curt Nelson (photo on right), one of only two PGA Master Professionals within Kansas City. The cost will be paid off over 20 years through the course’s Enterprise Fund. “We’ll retire the debt on our own; it won’t be the responsibility of taxpayers.”

“We’re real excited and can hardly wait,” says Nelson. “The open-air food and beverage area from an elevated level is going to provide a great view of the golf course.” Nelson estimates the indoor-outdoor dining area can accommodate about 150 persons, 75 inside and 75 outside (when weather permits). “We’re going to be more restaurant oriented and focus more on after golf menus.” In addition, the large outdoor patio with fire pits will accommodate tournaments of 120-150 players. It will be located immediately adjacent to the clubhouse. For those familiar with Sykes-Lady, the new clubhouse will be constructed on the current

Far and away Kansas City’s busiest golf course, Nelson expects 85,000 rounds of golf to be played during 2018 on Sykes/Lady’s three 9-hole courses and the par 3 course, with another 50,000 annual rounds played on St. Andrews’ 18-hole course, the sister course of Overland Park’s Recreation Services. The new clubhouse will be built with stacked limestone on two levels and feature an attractive clock tower and elevator. The top level will include a pro shop, offices, 14

The current putting clock at Sykes/Lady will be replaced by a new 21,770-square-foot clubhouse (including the outdoor area) and will offer stunning views of the course from the second level dining area. (Rendering of the “Terrace” view with open-air dining.)

OP Makeover putting clock area immediately east and north of the current clubhouse and will run parallel to Quivira Road. A new starter’s shack will also be built north of the clubhouse and will serve as golf central for the North, South and Par 3 courses. The WestLink course will have its own starter’s shack. Work on the new expanded practice facilities has been completed and includes a new putting green immediately north of the current putting clock, two practice greens and sand bunker. One of the practice greens is new, the other is the former first hole on the Par 3 course. With construction of a new third hole on the Par 3 course, holes No. 2 and No. 3 are now No. 1 and No. 2.

... Front view

The new hitting bays will further expand practice facilities. “Rain, lightning, snow, cold; we’re going to be a year-round facility,” says Director of Golf Mike Tanner. The cart staging area will be located on the southeast corner of the clubhouse and will not be visible from the parking lot. Concrete parking will replace the current parking lot and will be replaced in sections. It is not scheduled for completion until May of 2019.

... Front-south view

“Fortunately, our current clubhouse will still be accessible during the construction process,” patrons were told in an e-mail from Tony Cosby, Director of Recreation Services for the City of Overland Park. “Our biggest challenge will be making sure that sufficient parking is available for all of our patrons.” To alleviate possible parking shortages, only foursomes will be allowed at Sykes/Lady and 18-hole waves have been implemented on the three 9-hole courses. Carpooling is encouraged. Once the new clubhouse is completed, the old 17,000-square-foot clubhouse will be demolished.

... Terrace side view

What won’t be changed is the veteran golf staff. Nelson started at OP in 1992, spent three years at Loch Lloyd from 1995-98 and now is in his 21st consecutive year. Mike Tanner is in his seventh year as Director of Golf, and Sean Chalk is in his 15th year as head golf professional. His first assistant, Bess Quick, is in her first year. It is anticipated that all work will be completed in June of 2019. “On behalf of the Overland Park Golf Division and the City of Overland Park, I want to thank each of you in advance for your patience and understanding this summer,” Cosby told patrons. “As we have said many times, every dollar spent at our golf courses goes right back in upkeep

... South-back view and improvements. While many golf courses around the country are struggling to stay afloat, our two Overland Park golf courses are thriving. We can’t thank the patrons enough for the years of loyalty.” 

50 Years

Midwest Section PGA Member

Enters Esteemed Half Century Club by Ann E. Butenas, Contributing Writer

O

nce a man, twice a boy. With an impressive golf career to his name, professional golfer Kenneth E. Roper, 76, still speaks of the game with spirited enthusiasm akin to that of an eager young lad, ready to tackle the greens with endless bravado and confidence. The game of golf has been an integral part of his life since he was a boy, and it has afforded him both an incredible professional and personal experience over the years that has shaped him into the inspiring individual he is today. Golf was never just a game for Roper, nor was it a job; it was a lifestyle and remains so to this day. Raised in Lawrence, KS, and currently residing in Emporia, KS, Roper has proudly served the PGA of America for five decades, recently becoming an esteemed member of the PGA’s Half Century Club. PGA Professionals who have served the PGA of America with honor and pride for 50 years are elected to the Half Century Club. He stands among an elite and distinguished group of professional golfers as one who has maintained a solid commitment to growing the game and selflessly serving others in the process. First introduced to the game at the age of 10 by his father, Roper cut his golfing teeth as a caddy for many folks, including Dr. Penny Jones and the legendary Coach Phog Allen of the University of Kansas basketball fame at the Lawrence Country Club. Roper caddied while simultaneously perfecting his game over the course of the next decade, playing from junior high through his high school days. Upon graduation from high school, Roper opted for military service instead of college, enlisting in the United States Air Force, stationed at Othello Air Force Station in Washington. While serving in the Air Force, Roper soon realized a lack of golfing buddies on base but continued to play the game as often as he could. He soon found a regular golf partner in the form of the Base Commander. “The Commander would pull up in front of the barracks to pick me up and we’d go play,” smiled Roper, indicating that caused a bit of humorous dissension in the ranks at the time. “Hey! It wasn’t my fault — I was the only one there who played!” Roper participated in numerous tournaments while in the Air Force playing for the Air Defense Command all over the United States. 16

“I actually played more golf while in the service than I ever thought I would,” he recalled. After completion of his service in the USAF in 1964, Roper went to work for Ed Bucklin at Moses Lake Golf and Country Club in Washington. “I worked for Ed while I was still in the Air Force and continued to work for him for a few years after I got out,” noted Roper. “From there, I went to Spokane Golf and Country Club and worked for Gene Carberry. I was fortunate to be a part of the Pacific Northwest Section PGA, which, in my opinion, is one of the top three Sections in the country. I served on the board a couple of times for Eastern Washington and for the Section while there.” During his time at the various country clubs, Roper primarily worked as an assistant pro, but, he wore multiple hats. “It was different back then,” reflected Roper. “We didn’t have teaching pros like we do today. Back in those days, you had a head pro and an assistant pro, and the assistant pro did most of the work, such as tending to the pro shop and assisting members. However, I had great respect for Ed and enjoyed working for him. My monthly salary was $325, but that was back when a loaf of bread cost nine cents and a gallon of gas put you back 16 cents.” After working a few other jobs outside of the industry, spending a total of 10 years in Oregon and eight years in Washington, Roper landed his dream job in 1979 at Lawrence Country Club as the head professional, a position he held for five years. It was during that time Roper became somewhat of a legend on the greens by tying the course record at the time with a score of 66. “I was playing with Dr. Jones that day, and he was so excited about my score that you’d thought I had just won the U.S. Open,” laughed Roper. While in Lawrence, Roper also worked as an official for the KU basketball team, a position he fondly recalled and something for which he will always be grateful. “On my 40th birthday, Coach (Ted) Owens gave me a game jersey with the number 40 on the back, which is the number former KU player Johnny Crawford wore,” explained Roper. After his time in Lawrence, Roper transitioned to a job at Emporia Municipal Golf

Course as the head pro for about six years before becoming a golf sales representative, something he has done since then and currently does on a part-time basis. Roper is by no means one driven by ego or arrogance, but is proud of his accomplishments over the years, most notably being recognized as one of the better players for the Midwest Section, which honored him as its PGA Player of the Year in 1981. Roper also led the Section as the member who played in the most national club pro championships. Roper has been a member of the Midwest Section PGA since 1979. “The Midwest Section of the PGA is under the leadership of Brad Demo, whom I believe is one of the top CEOs of any section in the PGA,” emphasized Roper. “With Randy Towner as our Section President and a board, which is doing a great job, we have many outstanding PGA professionals in the Section.” Although health concerns in recent years have kept Roper from getting out on the course as much as he would like, he does play when he can. He also greatly appreciates how the game has allowed him to meet some amazing people over the years, while also giving him the opportunity to help others advance and develop in their game. “I have especially loved working with juniors over the years and have assisted many young players along the way,” said Roper, referencing a few notable young players such as Fletcher Harder and Brian Lawson, both from Emporia High School, the latter of whom won the 6A State Championship Individual Title at Rolling Hills Country Club in Wichita, KS. Roper maintains a debt of gratitude for the game and emphasized how it has positively impacted his life with his wife Paula and their five grown children. “I’ve been blessed to meet so many wonderful people in this business,” he smiled. “It’s been a great experience.”  Ann Butenas is a contributing writer for the Midwest Section PGA. Playing Be t ter Golf

by Rhett Fregoe, PGA

Take Your Putting to the Next Level Unzip the Secret of GRAIN ...

W

hen beginning a putting lesson, I will place a ball roughly 20 feet from the hole, and I ask the student to show me the process they go through to try to make that putt. A common theme is that the students fail to look at the big picture of that putt. Too many times, I see students looking only at the hole and hoping that their stroke gets the ball within a generous vicinity of the hole. I call this tunnel vision putting. This is why many golfers struggle on the greens. If you want to take your putting to the next level, you must be able to see the big picture of the putt and determine what other factors besides simply uphill or downhill will affect your putt. Here are some tips to consider before you putt. Playing/Reading Enough Break Most of my students know which way a putt will break, but many still miss on the low side of the hole. I see golfers attempting to determine how much break there is from directly behind the ball. This technique can work for short putts, but for putts outside of five feet, it will not.

Understanding the Grain How many times have you had a straight putt only to discover that it broke away as it rolled closer to the hole? Assuming you read your putt/break correctly, what most likely affected your putt is “grain.” • Grain is the direction the blades of grass are laying on the putting green. • When reading your putt, look to see if the grass between you and hole is shiny or dull. • Shiny/lighter colored grass means that your putt is down-grain, so the ball will tend to roll faster in that direction. • Dull/darker colored grass means that your putt is into the grain and the ball will roll slower. • If you cannot determine the grain, then always walk to the opposite side of the hole and look back at your putt’s path. • By looking at different angles of your putt, you can compare the color of the grain/grass and will have a better chance of determining the grains growth direction. If you still cannot determine the grain, you can use the condition of the grass around the hole as a guide. op T ged g a R

om Bott n  a e Cl

GRAIN

Notice in the photo on the left that the grass on the top side of the hole looks patchy and beaten up, while the bottom side looks healthier and cleaner cut. This tells you the grain is growing in the direction of the beaten-up or ragged side of the cup.

To clarify: If the putt is straight, then the ball will tend to fall that direction. So, if the putt looks to break toward the right, but the left-side of the cup is beaten up, then it won’t break as much to the right due to the grain. Basically, if the putt breaks opposite of the grain you want to error on playing less break.

Try this next time you are reading a putt. Notice in the photo above that I have determined my putt will break left to right. I am behind and to the right side of the ball, but opposite of the break. From this position, I have a better perspective of the severity of the slope that will affect my putt. If I were to only read this putt from directly behind my ball, the odds of me playing enough break are slim. This technique will also help you when you play courses with greens with which you are not familiar.

Putting is difficult because there are many factors that can affect the roll of your putt. Next time you play, I want you to see the entire picture and landscape of your putt before you make the stroke. You will be surprised how many more putts will fall if you can accomplish this, and soon, you’ll be putting at the “Next Level” and lowering your scores.  Rhett Fregoe, PGA, is the head golf professional at Shoal Creek Golf Course, 8905 N Shoal Creek Pkwy, Kansas City, MO 64157, 816.407.7242. ary Ellington remembers a time when Plattsburg Country Club was one of the elite golf courses in northwest Missouri. Remembers when the greens were the envy of every course superintendent from north of the river to the Iowa state line. He envisions a time when Plattsburg County Club, now a public golf course, returns to elite status, and he is on the fast track to making that happen. Ellington is the managing partner and one of six men who bought the club in September 2017. When he and his partners took over, Plattsburg Country Club was just a shadow of its former self. Tee boxes and greens were barren, bunkers were more dirt than sand and maintenance equipment 24

was shot. The club was in trouble. “We [the investors] were members and knew what a great course Plattsburg Country Club had been and believed it could be again,” Ellington said. “We wanted to keep ownership local, thought the course was a great asset to the town and wanted to keep it an 18-hole golf course.”

before. Ellington would like to take out even more trees to promote grass growth, but the course is bordered on the east and south by Smithville Lake. That’s U.S. Army Corps of Engineers property, so Ellington is “very limited in what I can do.” Still, the new owners have invested nearly $100,000 — the results are really starting to show.

Since the ownership change, Ellington and Reid Bromley, course superintendent, have been spending 12 to 14 hours a day whipping Plattsburg Country Club back in shape. “We’ve done something on every hole,” Ellington said.

“It’s a work in progress,” Ellington said modestly. “Our goal is to make Plattsburg Country Club a fun course to play by providing a sufficient challenge but is still fair and rewards good play. We have some new ideas that will make the course even more attractive to the golfing public and will implement those as time and money allow.”

Bridges and cart paths were repaired or replaced, tee boxes and greens were reseeded, new sand was added to existing bunkers, 36 irrigation heads were replaced, and more than 60 trees were cut down, so grass could grow where it never grew

Plattsburg wasn’t always the case. When it opened back in 1921, it was a nine hole course with sand greens, the greens were converted to Bentgrass in 1989, and it became an 18hole course in 1996 (actually, 10 holes were added — the former 9th green was converted into a putting green).

97 Years

“It combined the new and old holes perfectly,” Ellington said, “creating an interesting mix of green-types and sizes with many elevation changes and new challenges.” Plattsburg is wonderfully laid out and is very much a “shot maker’s” course. You’ll use every club in the bag and still play 18 in 3-1/2 hours or less. “It’s player friendly,” Ellington said, “and challenging enough as it is. We didn’t need to trick it up.” From the uphill par-5 1st hole to the downhill par-3 16th, the elevation changes are often dramatic and may make you rethink your club selection.

The par-3 7th at Plattsburg Country Club has a unique double green that’s shared with the 16th hole. Steep undulations separate the two holes. It’s a fun shot from the elevated tee. “The course is spread over 111 acres, so you are not waiting on golfers to get out of your fairway or ducking for cover when balls are hit your way.

“It’s just a great place More challenges await for those that love golf!” when you reach the greens. “We just couldn’t bear the Some are old style, small And if you love saving and flat — others are possibility of the course money. The green complexes at Plattsburg Country Club total During the course’s heyday, there were 77,000 square feet. The course is every365 members. By the time the new ownership thing a golfer could want — and more! took over, membership was down to 160 and “We have some fantastic vistas, with only 100 were paying members (the other creeks, sand bunkers and tree-lined 60 are lifetime members). of $800 per year for unlimited golf, those numbers will surely go up. Whether it’s the newly rebuilt tee box on hole No.9 or the complete redo of the now beautiful pond hugging the left side of the 10th green, golfers are taking notice. And liking what they see. “I don’t just have a financial interest, I have a vested interest,” Ellington said following our whirlwind tour of course improvements. “We just couldn’t bear the possibility of the course selling to a local corporate golf conglomerate. “We’re working hard, and the course is getting better and better every day.” Ready for a change of scenery and new challenges? Then you’ll want to give Plattsburg your best shot. Enjoy! 

Kenneth Smith High School Golf Award Presented For the first time in its 19-year history the Award is presented to co-winners.

T

he annual Kenneth Smith Award was presented to co-winners Joe Bultman and Christian Ghilardi on July 12, in a ceremony at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School. The award is sponsored by the Kenneth L. and Eva S. Smith Foundation, and is awarded annually to both a Greater Kansas City Area High School female and male golfer who best demonstrate excellence in the following areas: • • • •

Performance in high school golf tournaments Academic Achievement Leadership on the golf team and in other school areas Community Service, through school, church or other activities

All area high school golf team coaches and athletics directors were invited to submit nominations for this award. In the 19-year history of the award, this is the first time that co- winners were selected, which is especially noteworthy since both winners are from the same school.

Joe Bultman During the regular season, Bultman (who recently completed his junior year at Shawnee Mission Northwest) was incredibly consistent by winning one tournament, placing 2nd in five tournaments, 3rd in two tournaments and 5th in one tournament. He was the Sunflower League Champion (won by a tie-breaker over his teammate Christian Ghilardi) by amassing the lowest stroke total over three league tournaments. Bultman placed 3rd at Regionals and tied for 11th at State. His season scoring average was 72.6, #1 in Kansas 6A, and 2nd lowest in school history. In the classroom, Bultman has achieved a cumulative grade point average of 4.7 on 4.0 scale, placing him on the school’s honor roll every semester as well as on the school’s Math Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and the National Honor Society. Bultman was co-captain of the school’s golf team this year, and according to his coach, 28

by Pat McMahon at Shawnee Mission Northwest, he won nine tournaments, won 54 metals, had three of the top four annual scoring averages in school history, including a 73.3 scoring average for the past school year, which ranked 2nd in Kansas 6A (second only to teammate, Joe Bultman). In the classroom, Ghilardi earned a 3.4 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale, which placed him on the school’s honor roll every semester.

He was co-captain of his golf team and the boys’ basketball team during both his junior and senior years. According to coach Bamburg, “Christian has always demonstrated natural leadership skills, The 2018 Kenneth Smith Award winners Christian Ghilardi always helps our other golfers (left) and Joe Bultman holding their cherished trophy. and always treats everyone — from his teammates to his Jim Bamburg, “Joe set a great example for all competitors — with utmost respect.” the younger players, always offering advice and support. 5 Tips to Surviving the Drought

et's face it, July was hot, and August, let’s hope not hotter! It's also dry in many areas. Some say these drought conditions started last fall and continued through a cold, dry winter. Now that we've hit the hot, dry summertime, drought stress can kill our turf and a superintendent’s budget. You may be a golf course superintendent, professional landscaper or a homeowner caring for your yard. Drought conditions affect us all. Our differences may be access to water, costs of water and the budget. The sooner we alleviate turf stress, the better. We must make the water that's available to us stretch to meet our needs — without killing the turf. How do we balance availability and cost against acceptable conditions? 1. Have a Plan Good water management practices include a drought plan. Water conservation practices might include: • Lined ponds (reduce evaporation) • Moisture monitoring systems • Irrigation inspection and maintenance • Scheduled aeration • Alternative water sources (effluent and brackish water) • Turf tolerant to brackish water • Drought-tolerant, no-mow turf • Raised mowing heights • Decreased mowing frequency • Naturalized grass areas with good soil conditions • Root-pruning trees to avoid water competition • Application of growth regulators before wilt/dormancy • Soil improvement • Root mass improvement • Suspension of fertilizers and pesticides when turf is dormant • Surfactants to increase water 2. Use a Surfactant (Quick fix) Of that plan, one of the most important and quickest drought recovery aides is a high-quality soil surfactant. Surfactants decrease the surface tension of water, so it can penetrate and move through the soil

more effectively. This makes available water more useful, productive and efficient. I've worked in turf and agriculture over 35 years, and I've never seen a better surfactant than Huma Gro® Turf Surf-Max®. Surf-Max works in a unique way, moving water horizontally before pushing water down through the soil profile. This has many benefits. On sand-based greens, we don't lose water straight down through the soil profile. More water is kept in the root zone. In clay soils, Surf-Max helps water penetrate with less pooling on the surface. Surf-Max also moves water quickly and efficiently through thatch layers that are traditionally difficult for water to penetrate. Additionally, Surf-Max increases the availability of nutrients and soil conditioning products in the soil as they can move freely with the water through the soil profile. 3. Improve Soil Health Feed (beneficial) Fungi In conjunction with surfactant treatment, soil needs to be conditioned to be more receptive to water. At Huma Gro Turf, we take a sustainable approach of improving soil structure and soil health. Healthy soil allows better water infiltration and has better water holding capacity. We accomplish this with Huma Gro Turf’s Fertil Humus® to stimulate the beneficial fungi in the soil. Fertil Humus also breaks down and recycles organic matter in the soil, producing humus-rich soil. 4. Feed (beneficial) Bacteria Alternatively, Multi-Purpose™ improves soil structure by feeding the beneficial bacteria in the soil and stimulating microbial activities. The combination of Fertil Humus and Multi-Purpose produces a long-term, healthy soil environment that saves water, makes nutrients more available, and sustains healthy turf. 5. Increase Root Mass Finally, a superior root system should be developed. The more mass to the root system, the greater the water and nutrient uptake and overall plant health. Huma Gro

Turf increases root mass with a product called Breakout®. When applied to soil, Breakout promotes a dense fibrous root system. The sooner we start preventative and recovery measures, the sooner we see results. Let's use water as efficiently as possible as soon as possible. Whether in drought or abundance, we can do more with less both on the golf course and at home.

Scan QR Code to watch an amazing video of a thatch infiltration bench test of Huma Gro Turf’s surfactant product Surf-Max demonstrated by Dr. Johann Buck. This product is not only great for golf course, but also will cut your need to water your home lawn as often. Consult your local Huma Gro Turf representative TJ Blankenship of Green Partners USA at 816.519.6737 or TJ@ GreenPartnersUSA.com for specific recommendations. Huma Gro Turf products include Micro Carbon Technology® (MCT), a proprietary blend of very small organic molecules that allows for more effective absorption of nutrients by plants. 

Old Kinderhook —

Missouri's Premier Year-Round Golf Destination

Editorial by Alan Hoskins

O

Labor Day weekend brings an epic fireworks show. Starting on Friday, it’s four days of fireworks, live music, golf, massages, All-American cookouts, lawn games and fun for visitors of all ages.

“One of the things that make us unique is that once inside the gates, you don’t have to leave,” says Executive Director Bob Renken. “Everything that is needed is inside the gates — golf course, marina, boat charters, ice skating, four dining venues — all in a very peaceful setting.”

At 6,821 yards with five sets of tees, the course also boasts a large practice green and an 11-acre practice facility with short-game and sand bunker practice areas.

ld Kinderhook, a Missouri’s premier golf destination at the Lake of the Ozarks, continues to rock the boat with its addition of a new state-of-the-art 84-room lodge that opened in 2015. An all-inclusive golf resort which includes swimming pools, sand volleyball, spa, lake cruises, fishing, tennis courts and countless special events highlighted by a spectacular year-end Christmas Village — Old Kinderhook with an ice-skating rink, has vaulted itself to the state’s premier year-round golf and recreation destination.

The centerpiece, of course, is the Tom Weiskopf signature golf course. Annually ranked in Missouri’s Top Five courses and usually no worse than No. 2 by Golf Week, it’s also ranked No. 2 on Golf Magazine’s “Best Courses Near You,” with the staff of TEE TIMES GOLF GUIDE Magazine ranking it as “Missouri’s Best Resort Course for 2016 – 2017.”

Renowned for its scenic valleys, waterfalls, hills, water hazards and lake setting, “The thing that sets us apart is there’s not really a bad hole,” says Renken. “There’s no trick shots or blind holes, it all out in front of you — a good playable golf course.”

The cornerstone of a $10 million development is the Lodge at Old Kinderhook; 84 rooms with magnificent views overlooking the golf course’s 15th and 18th holes that flank the course’s large lake and provides a spectacular backdrop to an outdoor swimming pool, sand volleyball courts and cabana.

In the winter, there’s a pond hockey league and weekly broom ball play featuring a round ball and brooms.

The Lodge at Old Kinderhook received TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence after only being open for one year. The Certificate of Excellence Award celebrates hospitality businesses that have earned great traveler reviews on TripAdvisor® over the past year. KC’s Greatest Golf Match P l aye d

5 0 Ye a r s A go

10,000 watched Palmer, Nicklaus and Nelson each shoot 1-under par at longest U.S. golf course, Dub’s Dread.

t was then — and still is today — the most ballyhooed golf match ever played within Kansas City.

3’s averaged 270 yards, the par 4’s 473 and the par 5’s 596. (At that time, golfers used Real Wood drivers.)

The combatants — Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer vs. Byron Nelson and Jug McSpaden, whom went head-to-head in an exhibition match 50 years ago on August 25, 1968, at Dub’s Dread Golf Course located in the Piper area of Kansas City, KS. “A match between the Modern Millionaires (at that time) — Palmer and Nicklaus and the “Gold Dust Twins” of a generation ago — Nelson and McSpaden,” wrote golf writer Dick Mackey (at that time) in the Kansas City Star.

A crowd estimated at nearly 10,000 turned out on a very hot August afternoon. The largest crowd ever to see a single golf match in Kansas City. The Kansas City Star reported that traffic was backed up more than five miles in every direction. “It was an unruly crowd, but perhaps on this

trampling,” wrote famed Star sports editor and columnist Joe McGuff. “After their tee shots and the ropes around the tees were dropped, the spectators came running and whooping down the fairways like a herd of steers stampeding through a canyon pursued by Sioux Indians.” “Yet for all the elbows, the trampled feet and the shoving, the celebrated get-together of four of the great names of golf was all that it had been cracked up to be — and perhaps then some,” said Mackey. Indeed, the stars did not disappoint. Nicklaus and Palmer each were one under par at 71, Nicklaus without a bogey and one birdie; Palmer with three birdies and two bogeys as they teamed for a 1-up win in the match play format.

The match took on even greater significance because it was being played at Dub’s Dread, a course built by McSpaden that had been proclaimed the longest and the highest-rated of “America’s 200 Toughest Courses” by Golf Digest in December of 1967. “The toughest golf course in America stretches exactly 8,101 yards across rolling terrain in the village of Piper, near Kansas City, KS,” wrote Golf Digest.

Because of the major gap in age, Nelson and McSpaden were given a 50-yard advantage on each hole, but still playing it at about 6,900 demanding yards. What’s amazing is the crowd of people watching and the small trees behind the green. Today those trees tower 50 – 80+ feet high.(photo provided by Alec Otting.)

Just how good was the golf? Quite good, said Nicklaus, then 28. “A score of 71 may not impress a lot of people, but it’s all relative,” he said. “That was, in my opinion, a 76 or 77-par course out there. So, we shot five, maybe six under.”

par 3 set to be played at 268 yards. “I was there as a spectator and was most interested in that hole because earlier, I had made a hole-in-one from 174 yards,” wrote Ross Lillard of Kansas City, MO.

Kansas City Star assistant sports editor Dick Wade (at that time) agreed. “As might be expected there were more than a few in that pushing, shoving swarm who were not too knowledgeable in the why and wherefores of the game of golf,” wrote Wade. “They saw much that pleased them, but they missed the fact that they were eyewitnesses to some of the best golf ever played in this area. I don’t know whether these people appreciate what they saw out there. I just hope they know this was super golf.”

“It was too hot to argue about it and the distance to the green on that day and age from the initial tee, was ridiculous. In those days a 268-yard carry was a very long way. Mr. McSpaden was not consulted. As I recall, neither one hit the green. Both were close to the putting surface and both got pars.” McSpaden, Nelson and Palmer, of course, have long since passed and probably most of the 10,000 fans who were on hand for the iconic match. But their evaluations have been written indelibly. “I think Firestone is the toughest course we play on the tour,” said Nicklaus. “But it is a pitch-and-putt compared to this.” “That was absolutely wonderful golf these boys played,” said Nelson. “You have to be some kind of knucklehead to get yourself into something like this,” chuckled Palmer.

Nicklaus and Palmer at age 38, played the course at a whopping 7,846 yards. “What’s more, they My autographed photo from June 17, 1986 of (from left) “Then there was McSpaden,” did it while keeping up a running Tom Watson, Jug McSpaden and Byron Nelson during a wrote Mackey. “He is the one who conversation with the gallery, guest match at Dubs Dread Golf Course. took the gamble on this match. exchanging quips, posing for (photo by Alan Hoskins) He put his own money up for the pictures and signing autographs appearances fees. Super’s Corner

by Jacob Rockhold, Superintendent

S uperintendents are Heat Stressed — G olfers are Melting . . .

S

ummer started hot and then just got hotter! June was hot — July, big-bang hot! Can August get any worse? We saw the mercury rise to near triple digits earlier than expected this year. All superintendents love working outside, and it’s the reason I’m in the golf industry. A desk job is not for me. Although, when summers, like this year, are extremely hot, air conditioning becomes my new best friend. The wife comes first, of course! But, what about the course handling the intense heat, and the stress it causes the turf? Superintendents will use many different practices to relieve heat stress from greens, so golfers can make those long birdie putts. During the summer heat, the goal is to keep the grass watered and cool, but regardless, the growth of the grass on the greens will slow significantly due to the heat stress. The plant begins to use energy that it had been storing in the roots from the cooler fall and spring temperatures. With heat and stress, all the fertilizing and aerifying comes full circle, and hopefully, the roots had grown thick and deep. Naturally, as the plant uses the energy in the roots, the roots will start to get smaller and thinner. This is common in all turf during the summer months. Relieving as much stress as possible will ensure that the grass has enough energy stored up to survive summer. Relief can come by using chemicals and/or mechanically. Chemicals can be expensive, but also very effective. When watering grass over the course of the several months, soil can become hydrophobic. Depending on the water source, soil can be high in calcium or salts that can bind to the soil. Overtime, salts and other molecules will stick to the soil and absorb available water in the soil. Grass roots must compete with these soils and molecules, and during the stress of the summer, any extra effort to fight for water can cause the plant to become stressed. Chemicals called wetting agents help flush these molecules through the soil and allow the water to become more available to the plant. Wetting agents are safe chemicals that act like a soap to aid in washing away unwanted molecules. This can help the grass make it through a stretch of extreme heat. Other ways to help are to mechanically open the soil. Yes, that means another dreaded aerification. But, don’t panic, this aerification comes with very little disturbance to the greens. Many will use metal tines that are smaller than one/quarter inch. It may

38

TEE TIMES GOLF GUIDE

August 2018

surprise you that your course might aerify multiple times during the summer without you even noticing. Using small needle metal tines along with light topdressing — a golfer will rarely notice. This creates small holes for water to filter deeper in the soil. This is far less aggressive than our spring or fall aerification, but very effective to relieve stress for the short term. Believe me, aerification isn’t all that bad! It can be a very useful tool for superintendents. Verticutting is another option but will disturb the green surface a bit more. Dethatching the grass by verticutting can also allow water to dive deeper through the grass and into the soil. Mechanical processes like these are very effective, but more time consuming. Developing a schedule that uses both a wetting agent and mechanical processes at different times throughout the year can greatly help keep the course in good shape. Have you ever noticed those large fans some courses use? Believe it or not, these fans are not to relieve the golfer on a hot day, but they can also cool you. Some greens will be surrounded by large trees, using fans can help circulate air, reduce humidity and reduce temperature in this localized area. Hot and humid conditions can invite damaging fungus and diseases on golf course greens. Using fans greatly reduces the ideal environment that can produce such diseases. There are many ways to help reduce the stress on turf during this hot summer. Most of the time superintendents are not flooding the course with water every night to keep the grass green. Superintendents will use many different tactics and equipment to help the grass any way they can and use as little water as necessary to keep the grass alive. However, you, on the other hand, should drink plenty of water on these hot summer days and a little less of the suds (beer) you most desire. Play early or late in the day. It remains light until nearly 9 p.m. this time of year, so evening golf can be as enjoyable as an early morning round — without getting up at the crack of dawn.  Jacob Rockhold interned at Baltusrol Golf Club in 2012. He also worked at Shadow Glen Golf Club, as an assistant. In 2015, Rockhold became the superintendent at Stone Canyon Golf Club in Blue Springs, MO. Kansas City Area Golf Options — a Chip Shot Away...

Ironhorse Golf Club

Creekmoor Golf Club

Adams Pointe Golf Club

LEAWOOD, KS — Ironhorse Golf Club opened in 1995. Renowned course designer Dr. Michael Hurdzan designed the 18-hole par 72 championship layout around Nigro Creek, which affects play on fifteen holes. Bridges cross the creek at least fifteen times. The course layout maintains the natural aspect of the land with many elevation changes throughout the course. The Bentgrass greens, tree-lined Zoysia fairways with Bluegrass and tall Fescue rough make it a shot-makers course and a favorite among Kansas City Metro golfers.

RAYMORE, MO — The Golf Club at Creekmoor is a semi-private club (public welcome), and offers Bentgrass tee boxes and greens, plush Zoysia fairways and 65 white sand bunkers. This is the 21st course that Tom Clark of Ault Clark & Associates designed for Cooper Land Development. According to Clark, the site is tremendous with its rolling terrain, majestic hardwood trees and abundant views of the 125-acre lake.

BLUE SPRINGS, MO — Adams Pointe Golf Club opened in the spring of 1998 and is owned by the city of Blue Springs, MO. It is among the KC area finest golf facilities. Set in rolling hills, it’s a true 18-hole championship golf course. Designed by noted architect, Don Sechrest, it has gone through many upgrades since its opening 20 years ago.

White Sand, Elevation Changes, Creeks

There are five individual tee complexes per hole, and it’s a good idea to choose the correct yardage for your game. Total yardage varies from 6,900 yards from the Black tees to 4,783 yards from the forward (red) tees, with a rating from the back tees of 73.8 and a slope of 140. Ironhorse is filled with memorable holes — including the tantalizingly-drivable (just 271 yards from the white tees), but potentially troublesome par-4 11th hole and the wonderfully picturesque and challenging par-4 18th, one of the toughest finishing holes in the city. The hole that just might leave the greatest impression is the par-3 2nd. Not because of the hole itself (and it is a beautiful golf hole), but because of the remodeled clubhouse and newly created Vista 154 banquet room behind it. There are significant elevation changes on most of the holes and a creek that comes into play on all 18. Bunkers are something else you probably cannot escape at Ironhorse — 59 white sand-filled beauties to be exact. Amenities including a driving range, practice greens and a new fleet of golf carts with GPS. It’s one the “premiere open-to-the-public golf facility in the Kansas City area. Green fees range from $44 to $74 on weekends. Ironhorse Golf Club, managed by Troon Golf and owned by the City of Leawood, KS. 15400 Mission Road, Leawood, KS 66224. www.IronhorseGolf.com.

With a Monster 663 yard Par 5

Since its opening in 2007, Creekmoor is well-known as one of the best of KC area golf courses. Located on nearly 1,000 acres in Raymore, MO, Creekmoor’s championship golf course, spans 7,406 yards from the back (Black) tee boxes making it among the longest courses in the Kansas City area. The Green tees (Blue at most courses) are 6,806, White’s are 6,151 and Red’s are 5,328 yards. The most memorable hole, at least for anyone with courage enough to play the course from the tips, is No. 9 — a downhill monster par 5 that stretches 663 yards, Kansas City’s longest hole. Creekmoor’s large greens roll true with many subtle undulations. Hole No. 5, a 537-yard par 5 has a severe two-level green, and the 548-yard par 5-13th hole has a challenging biarritz-type rolling green with a valley running across the middle. The entire course offers some of the best greens found within the KC area. The facility offers a first-class driving range, practice area and large practice-putting clock. Public green fee rates (2018) range from $70 Mon. – Fri. and $80 weekends. Creekmoor Golf Club is located at 1112 East 163 Street, Raymore, MO 64083. Call the pro shop at 816.331.2621 or visit www. Most recently, it renewed all 30 sand bunkers drainage and then filled them with pristine Arkansas white sand — part of the most extensive course renovation since it opened. Nature is the backdrop at Adams Pointe as protected wetland areas line the course along with stone lined ponds and native prairie grass roughs. With immaculate Bentgrass fairways and greens, the challenging front-nine is skillfully carved out of the forest and wetland areas with a creek running through all nine holes. The scenic back nine features championship links-style golf with many elevation changes and ponds that come into play on five holes. Adams Pointe is playable for any skill-level with four sets of tees ranging from 5,060 yards to 6,938 yards. Memorable holes 2, 6 and 8 are labeled the best by many area golfers. No. 8 is a par 3 and likely the toughest par 3 in Kansas City. If the south wind is strong, the par-5 2nd hole can play an extremely long 525-yards (from the tips). No. 6 par-4 is a magnificent dog-leg-left that demands two well-placed shots for any possibility at par. Regarded as a “premier place to play” in Kansas City, green fee rates at Adams Pointe range from $45 Mon. to Thurs. with weekends ranging from $48 to $55 and all rates include cart with GPS/hole maps. U.S. Women’s Amateur Qualifiers Determined

T

he U.S. Women’s Amateur qualifying rounds teed off at Eagle Bend Golf Course in Lawrence, KS, on June 27, with 47 players attempting to qualify on a hot, humid day, weathering the conditions to make it to the top four.

Ashley Gilliam from Manchester, TN, with two-under, carding a 70 was Medalist for the day. Gilliam’s round was highlighted by four birdies and a consistent finish with six pars in a row to end her day in the top spot.

The 2018 KC Fourball Championship

I

n its third year, the KC Fourball Championship saw its field of players nearly double in size since last year. Thirty teams paired up at Shoal Creek Golf Course, not only to win the KC Fourball title, but to qualify for the Heart of America Fourball Championship later this summer.

Matt and Andy Kelley were the leaders in the clubhouse after round one with an incredible score of 64 (-7). Andy Kelley had six birdies on the day and an eagle (2) on the par-4, 1st hole. Matt Kelley provided a couple clutch pars for the duo to combine for the low round on the day by two strokes over Cummings/Gillund and defending champs Jeff Bell and Elliot Soyez. Soyez/Bell combined for seven birdies on the day, but one setback on the par-3, 11th left them with some work to do heading into round two. Gregory Diederich and Charlie Rinehart, a surprise group, shot a first round of 67 (-4) and found themselves sneaking up the leaderboard after carding a round two score of 64 (131 total). With seven birdies and no bogeys, Diederich/Rinehart became the leaders in the clubhouse, while Kelley/Kelley and Soyez/Bell finished in the last group of the day. For the Kelley’s (photo on left), round two went even better than the first. Matt Kelley provided three birdies for the team before an hour lightning delay brought the last half of the field inside. Andy Kelley appreciated the delay, as afterwards, he birdied five straight holes, #12-16. Their round two bettered round one by one stroke, entering the clubhouse with a 63 (-8) and a total score of 127.

The 2018 U.S. Women’s Amateur qualifiers from Eagle Bend Golf Course are (from left) Sera Tadokoro, Medalist Ashley Gilliam and Katy Winters. (photo by KCGA Staff) Sera Tadokoro (Japan) and Katy Winters (Wichita, KS) tied for second place with even par 72. Tadokoro started out hot with three straight birdies and a total of four through the front nine. A couple hiccups on the back would slow down her round and bring her into the clubhouse with even-par 72. Winters started out with a couple bogeys but battled back with four birdies on the day to tie for second place. A five-way tie for fourth with a 73 (+1) round would cause a playoff to determine the fourth and final qualifying spot, which ultimately went to Brook Boardman of Waukee, IA. Despite the extreme heat, it was a great competitive day of golf at Eagle Bend. The women who qualified will move on to the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at The Golf Club of Tennessee in Kingston Springs, TN, held August 6-12. The field will be comprised of 156 golfers. Players will have two rounds of stroke play to determine the top 64 players, who will then move on to the match play portion with the championship match on August 12. For more information about the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship as well as live scoring during the championship, visit the USGA at www.USGA.org.  40

Defending champions Soyez/Bell again had seven birdies on their round, but a few bogeys totaled a round of 66 (-5) to knock them into third place with a total score of 132 for the tournament. Matt and Andy Kelley played great golf both days to win the 2018 KC Fourball Championship title by four strokes over Diederich/ Rinehart. With a combined 14 birdies and an eagle, the Kelley’s earned the Champions title as well as a qualifying spot in The 58th Heart of America Championship at the National Golf Course of Kansas City on August 8 and 9.  Taylor Albritton, USGA P.J. Bushnell Factory Outlet Store —

by Bill Cromwell

A Candy Store for the Outdoorsman and Woman

T

he Lenexa, KS, Bushnell Factory Outlet Store is more than your destination for golf range finding devices — it also has an extensive assortment of outdoor sports and lifestyle products. We all want to keep our drinks cold or hot while golfing — you never know if or when you’ll see a beverage cart. Well, the Bushnell Factory Outlet Store has your back with CamelBak Vacuum Insulated Stainless drinkware.

With the CamelBak 40 oz Chute™ Vacuum, you can get a cold drink and a smooth pour, even on the golf course. This vacuum-insulated bottle keeps liquids cold for 48 hours (even longer if you add ice) and hot for six. Plus, the cap snaps into the handle, so you can keep it out of the way as you pour. The sturdy, double-walled steel design keeps condensation from collecting on the sides of the bottle, and the powder-coat paint job adds some extra color. The narrow-mouthed opening also makes it easy to drink and pour without spilling, so you won’t waste a single drop bouncing down that bumpy cart path. CamelBak 40-oz Chute retails for $38 or the 20-oz Chute Stainless Vacuum Insulated $28. Rubicon HD flashlights offer brighter and more consistent light — with an extremely wide square beam instead of the typical round beam. Its “Perfect Beam Technology” — high definition (HD) Cree LEDs — provide bright light with full intensity from edge to edge, no dark spots or drop-outs with 330 Lumen output - extreme brightness. Plus, there’s a Red Halo low-lumen mode designed to enhance sight without compromising natural night vision — great for roadside emergencies. All Rubicon lighting is constructed with an aircraft-grade aluminum housing and meets IPX-4 water resistant specifications. Bushnell’s Rubicon Lighting T300L HD Square Beam Flashlight retails at $58.95. Best flashlight I’ve ever used — hands down! www.TeeTimesMagazine.com

“Bushnell’s Factory Outlet store offers huge savings on new, discontinued, factory excess and refurbished products at drastically reduced prices,” said Store Manager Monty King. “Our expert sales associates are fully versed on every product. You’ll love the look of our store, as well as the 100% customer service demonstrated by our incredible employees. We want golfers to know that when they want a GPS or Laser rangefinder golf device — we have what they need. However, we also carry a large inventory of non golf related products that many golfers need for other outdoor adventures.”

Whether it’s watching the stars with your new telescope, needing binoculars for the sports game, Bushnell’s new Hybrid hunting electronic devises Rangefinder GPS Combo and scopes, portable battery chargers, Bolle’ sunglasses to read the greens or an HD flashlight to find your path to the first tee — the Bushnell Factory outlet store has what you need. It’s a candy store for the outdoorsman.  Bushnell offers a trade-in program where you can trade-in your current laser rangefinder or GPS and get the newest Bushnell product. For information about any of the brands or products, contact the Bushnell Factory Outlet Store at 913.310.0783 or drop by 8500 Marshall Drive, Lenexa, KS, 66214. Store hours Monday – Friday are 10 a.m. - 7 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and closed on Sunday. Visit online at www.BushnellGolf.com. August 2018

Miss August Harper Rockhold

CaddyDaddy Golf Has The Perfect Cooler.

Editorial by Bill Cromwell

Y

ou may have read the July issue’s feature about the Talon Golf Glove with the Tack-Fusion Palm, but did you know that CaddyDaddy Golf began as a leading producer of custom golf coolers that keep beverages ice cold on the golf course. Today, from coolers to heavy duty all-in-one travel bags, CaddyDaddy Golf produces cutting-edge products using only the finest materials available.

Superintendent Jacob Rockhold of Stone Canyon G.C. with Harper, his 2-1/2 years old Yellow Lab. Jacob says, “Harper loves to sleep on her back with her belly and feet up. All the folks at the course know and lover Harper.” Jacob is also a monthly columnist for this magazine providing superintendent’s news. Photography by Elisabeth Blair Photography www.elisabeth-blair.com. (See past 2018 issues for previous month’s Super Dog of The Month.)

CaddyDaddy offers a “9-Pack or 6-Pack Golf Bag Cooler,” the first golf product the company produced. “Although our cooler has gone through many advancements over the years, it is still a customer favorite,” said Rod Dunlap, co-owner of CaddyDaddy Golf. The beverage coolers come with a shoulder strap, an easy carry handle and side access zippers. It’s lightweight and easily fits into a golf cart basket. Dunlap says, “We specialize in golf tournaments and the 9-pack golf bag cooler has been one of our top sellers. Whether you want coolers embroidered or silk-screened, we can accommodate almost any corporate logo for your next tournament.” The 9-Pack Golf Bag Cooler is $24.99 on sale now for $22.99. The smaller 6-Pack Golf Bag Cooler retails for just $18.99. CaddyDaddy Golf products can be purchased at www.caddydaddygolf.com and Amazon for those who like using “Prime.” 
