Seed Spitters
ovember is election month and our opportunity to vote for candidates, propositions and amendments. I have advocated every year over the past 18 of publishing this magazine to present a new proposition to the ballot titled Proposition BSS, which could effectively ban Sunflower Seeds on Golf Courses. State and local governments estimate no direct costs or savings from Proposition BSS (Prop BSS), but golf course maintenance costs could be decreased significantly from the cleanup cost and damage to mower blades. However, State and local government tax revenues could be reduced annually ranging from a $2.9 to 3.7 million due to Sunflower Seed sales loses. Because of the potential decrease in tax revenue derived from Sunflower Seed sales, Prop BSS has yet to make it through the House for a Senate vote. There is still hope. It seems that environmental activist and health officials have become aware of Prop BSS and are now targeting the health risk from spitting sunflower seeds on golf course greens. For years avid golfers have complained about the difficulty of trying to putt through those nasty sunflower hulls spat on the green. Well, health officials are now seriously concerned about the detrimental health risks to humans from touching those germ-infested spat hulls as they are removed from a putting line. Health officials became concerned when a local golfer developed severe neurological problems after touching spat sunflower hulls while on the green. The rare neurological disease was causing him to have uncontrollable shakes over four-foot putts, and he would shank shots from 80 yards and closer to the green. Simply looking at a green would at times cause him to faint. Stumped doctors worked to find the cause of this golfer’s rare neurological disease. The golfer’s DNA was tested; pathology testing, CAT scans and blood testing were performed, all of which revealed little. Until they started investigating his daily habits. What was finally uncovered was that this frequent golfer who handled spat sunflower seeds on the greens of his local golf course had contracted the rare Putting Shakes Disease (PSD) from those spat sunflower hulls.

Printed copies are found at nearly 300 locations including public and private golf courses, driving ranges, golf stores, restaurants, sports bars, resorts, hotels and many other select locations. In addition, the magazine is offered online as an inter-active E-magazine at www.TeeTimesMagazine.com.
Environmental activist and health officials are now moving towards presenting Prop BSS to the MO House as an “improper disposal of waste” bill directed at those who are spitting sunflower hulls on golf course greens with an imposed fine of $114 for each germ-infested sunflower seed hull spat. Ultimately, Prop BSS is an attempt to eradicate the four-foot and-in Putting Shakes Disease that’s spread by the alleged germ-infested hull-spatters. Local officials plan to present Prop BSS for public voting sometime during the spring 2019 golf season.

In the meantime, when you see the sunflower seed “Knothead” spitting germ-infested hulls in your group, drop a few sunflower seed hulls on the green in his putting line — where he’s sure to see them. Maybe he’ll go off in a tirade and not putt worth a dang the rest of the day. Just leave those damn sunflower seed in your car — they don’t belong in the game of golf. Please vote “Yes” on Prop BSS!

LOCAL GOLF NEWS
The Midwest’s Largest Consumer Golf Show returns to KC — February 15 - 17, 2019
Year 18 times — a record likely never-to-be broken.
T
“Rob has enjoyed a tremendous career — going about it very quietly. But man, can he play the game of golf!” says Brad Demo, the Executive Director of the Midwest Section. “Being named Midwest Section PGA Golf Professional of the Year, an award that has nothing to do with playing ability, but the quality put into being a golf professional. That just may be the thing he’s [Wilkin] most proud.”
Already, many of the region’s most respected names in golf have made plans to be a part of the 2019 show, including Prairie Band Resort & Casino; Firekeeper Golf Course; Shangri-La Golf Club, Resort & Marina; Grand Summit Golf & Country Club, Shawnee Golf & Country Club, Alabama Tourism, Hot Springs Village and more.
While Wilkin gave the regular PGA TOUR a shot a half-dozen times in his younger days, but at 56, the Senior Tour is not on a bucket list. In his 20th year at Heritage Park and his new enterprise with partner John Richmond who in 2017 purchased the former Martin City Golf Complex a driving range and golf academy located at No. 1 135th Street in Martin City, MO, Wilkin is content with his local interests and family life.
he Kansas City Golf Show has become the kickoff event to the upcoming golf season throughout Kansas and western Missouri, giving local enthusiasts the chance to try out the newest clubs, pocket huge savings on green fees, apparel and other golf-related products and services, receive free lessons and take home incredible prizes from the Overland Park Convention Center.
Past shows have featured dozens of fantastic golf destinations — part of nearly 85 exhibitors and major golf club manufacturers for the show’s thousands of consumers to explore. This year’s show is on track to feature even more! The Kansas City Golf Show has become one of the fastest-growing golf shows in the nation — last year’s show welcomed more than 8,000 attendees and over 85 exhibitors! For more information, visit www.KansasCityGolfShow.com.
Wilkin Records 9th Midwest PGA Professional Championship Win and is Inducted in Hall of Fame...
R
ob Wilkin, the director of golf and head golf professional at Heritage Park Golf Course in Olathe, KS, since 1998, secured his record-setting 9th Midwest PGA Professional Championship Win in August at Firekeeper Golf Course.
Wilkin turned in a winning total of 8-under-par, 208 to secure the Midwest PGA Professional Champion title. Chris Mabry (Lake Quivira C.C.) was runner-up, finishing at 213. Wilkin, Mabry, Matt Seitz of Hutchinson, KS, and Jeff Sedorcek (Fred Arbanas G.C.) will lead the four Midwest Section PGA professionals to compete in the 52nd PGA Professional Championship, April 28-May 1, 2019 at Belfair Country Club in Bluffton, SC. The Championship brings together a field of 312 contestants representing the PGA of America’s 41 nationwide Sections. Wilkin’s 9th Midwest PGA Professional Championship (2018) victory is the most wins by a “Section” professional dating back to the first championship in 1960 won by Sam Reynolds who went on to win five championships; 1961, 64, 65, and 1966. Followed by Robert Stone Sr. with five wins; 1969, 75, 76, 79, and 1982. A golfer named Tom Pernice, Jr. won in 1994, 95 and 96. Wilkin’s record-setting nine championship wins came in 1988, 90, 97, 98, 2001, 04, 06, 16 and 2018. In addition, at age 56, he has won the Midwest PGA “Senior” Professional Championship in 2012 and 2014. He has also been named as The Midwest PGA Section Player of the 8
Wilkin’s long golf career has taken him to four PGA, three Senior PGA championships and the 1988 U.S. Open at Brookline Country Club. In 1991, he led the PGA championship at Crooked Stick — after two holes. Wilkin’s playing partners have included such household names as Lee Trevino, Tom Kite, Kenny Perry, Tom Watson and the late Payne Stewart. Wilkin was quoted by golf writer Alan Hoskins about one of Wilkin’s memorable playing highlights, which came in 2016 when Wilkin won the Watson Challenge after Watson missed a 3-foot putt on the fifth playoff hole at Hallbrook Country Club. “I don’t know how you can top it — I’ll remember it forever,” said Wilkin, who moments earlier, had just made nearly the identical putt. “I was ready to go to the next hole. I guess that’s why they call it sudden death. All of a sudden, game over.”

Flanked by the Watson Challenge Cup and a few of his approximately 75 plaques and trophies including 18 Midwest PGA Section Player of the Year awards, Rob Wilkin shows off two of his most prized possessions, two Pomeranian dogs. (Photo by Alan Hoskins) Hoskins said, “While there’s no official count, the guesstimate is about 76+ winning trophies and plaques that Wilkin’s accumulated.” In an October 2018 ceremony, Ron Wilkin was inducted into the 2018 Midwest Section PGA’s Hall of Fame. Inevitably, Rob Wilkin will one day grace the KC Golf history books as one of Kansas City’s greatest golfers.

Cart Bag You Wheel to The Cart — Why Didn’t I Think of That?
C
Editorial by Bill Cromwell
addyDaddy Golf, the producers of premium golf equipment, unveiled it’s newest innovative product in September called the RoadRunner Golf Cart Bag. Golf club bags have not changed much since Bobby Jones was playing, so the RoadRunner’s innovative design is as refreshing as a new twist-face driver.
Telescopic Handle for Easy Rolling. ◄ Inline Skate Whe els
If you’re tired of lugging your heavy over-the-shoulder golf bag across the parking lot and lobbing it onto the back of the golf cart, then the RoadRunner bag is for you. Just pull up the Roadrunner’s handle, roll it over to the cart, push the handle down and strap it on the cart. That’s it. No pulled back muscles before hitting that first tee shot down the middle of the fairway. Plus, you just look cool strolling along while rolling your golf clubs behind you from your car to the course.
The RoadRunner bag has a 15-way club divider, built in beverage cooler and plenty of pockets for all your golf gear. And, I gotta lot of golf gear! What sets it apart from typical cart bags is its built-in Inline Skate Wheels and its telescopic handle to get it from your trunk, across the parking lot and to the golf cart. The RoadRunner Bag Features: ●● Molded Wheel Base with Inline Skate Wheels ●● 15-Way Top with Three Full Length Dividers ●● Telescopic Handle for Easy Rolling ●● Insulated Cooler Pocket ●● Two Felt Lined Valuables Pockets ●● 10 Easy-Access Zippered Pockets for Extra Gear ●● Two Integrated Molded Top Lifting Handles ●● Two Towel Rings with Hook & Loop Glove Attachments ●● Padded Shoulder Strap (but you won’t need it) ●● Rain Hood and Umbrella Ring ●● Bottom Trunk Handle for Easy Lifting ●● Weighs only 7.2 pounds (Note my CaddyDaddy Roadrunner bag in photo at the top of the page. very golfer should play Colbert Hills Golf Course at least once. It’s been rated the No. 1 daily fee golf course in Kansas ever since it opened in 2000 and for good reason. Built into 315 acres of the Flint Hills, you’ll find an 18-hole links-style golf course designed by architects Jeff Brauer and PGA Champions Tour Player Jim Colbert. The course was carefully laid out to preserve the natural beauty of vast rolling hills and native tallgrass. It’s a bit of a drive for KC area golfers to Manhattan, KS, but a golf experience you won’t forget. “With 125 feet of elevation changes on both nines, there are at least a half-dozen holes with elevated tees offering a myriad of Kodak moments,” said famed golf writer Alan Hoskins. “It can best be described as spectac-

Standing on the first tee for your first look at Colbert Hills, you’re struck with two thoughts — Uh-Oh and Wow!” At 7,525-yards from the “black and blue” tees (77.5 course and 152 slope rating) many golfers prefer the slightly shorter, but still very demanding silver tees played at 7,049 yards with a course rating of 74.8 and slope of 150.
“When Palmer and Nicklaus played Dub’s Dread, it was played at 8,101 yards stretching across rolling terrain in the village of Piper near Kansas City, KS,” wrote golf writer Alan Hoskins in a 2014 article in this magazine. During the 60s and 70s, its course rating was 78.8, nearly seven strokes higher than its par of 72. At the time, the average par 3 at the course was 270 yards, the average par 4 was 473 yards and the average par 5 ─ 596 yards.
The most spectacular is the 600-yard 7th. Played from the highest point on the course, it offers not only an elevated view of several holes, but also panoramic views of miles and miles of flatlands that surround the course. Open to the public, green fees with cart are $60 Monday to Thursday and $75 weekends. Seniors rates are $39 and $54. Colbert Hills, located at 5200 Colbert Hills Drive, Manhattan, KS. 66503. D
ub’s Dread Golf Club in Kansas City, KS, opened in the late 60s, and today, it stands alone in national prominence, when it comes to Kansas City area golf courses. It was quickly proclaimed by national golf magazines to be the toughest and longest golf course in America. It was presented “A Kansas Best Public Golf Course Award for 2016” by TEE TIMES GOLF GUIDE Magazine. It remains the only 18-hole public course in the KC area that offers you a chance to walk (or ride) the same fairways that legends Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Byron Nelson played — not once, but twice.
November 2018
Dread Golf Club Because of changes in the course and a new clubhouse, the course can no longer be played at 8,101 yards (thank goodness); nevertheless, it affords golfers the chance to play the same holes played by many of golf’s greats. Today the course plays at 7,230 yards from the tips and a course rating of 75.3 (par is 72), which means it will test the game of even the best players. As for price, Monday through Friday, seniors can play with cart for $28.50 and only $20 in winter. Regular weekend rate is $55, weekdays $43 ($20 - $40 in winter). Check for daily specials at www.DubsDreadGolfClub. com or call 913.933.0523. Dub’s Dread Golf Club is located at 12601 Hollingsworth Road, Kansas City, KS 66109.

Eastern Kansas Best Firekeeper Golf Course ►
T
he experience at Firekeeper Golf Course in Mayetta, KS, just north of Topeka, KS, begins with a aged-looking wooden sign at the entrance with a single word “Bosho” — “Welcome” in Potawatomi. And there is nothing more welcoming to a golfer than the sight of green, green as far as the eye can see. This is a true “Bucket list” course that every golfer must play. Firekeeper golf course is an economic endeavor of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and the hottest golf property in the Midwest. Firekeeper is the first signature course of four-time PGA TOUR winner Notah Begay III, the only full-blooded Native American on the TOUR. He designed Firekeeper in partnership with Jeffrey D. Brauer, ASGCA. Completed in 2010, the course opened in the spring of 2011. Firekeeper is a par 72 with four par 5s, four par 3s and ten par 4s. It plays as long as 7,500 yards from the longest tees or as short as 4,500 yards from the forward tees. It offers pristine Bentgrass tees, fairways and greens with fescue rough. “While Zoysia grass at other courses has gone dormant or is gone altogether, Firekeeper is always green, ALL the time,” wrote golf writer John Baccala. “How’s that possible, you ask? Good luck getting the answer.” “We really can’t tell you the secret,” said Randy Towner, head professional and general manager, “but this is our ‘stock’ answer when asked. The Bentgrass here [the fairway turf at Firekeeper] will stay green longer than Zoysia.” “Our motto is, if the Tour called tomorrow and said, ‘Can you host an event next week?’ We could say, ‘Sure,’ said Towner. Firekeeper has several attractive “stay and play” packages offered by Prairie Band Casino & Resort, located across the street from the course. For more information, visit www.prairieband.com/golf. Firekeeper is in Mayetta, KS, about 15 miles north of Topeka just off Highway 75. For tee times, call 785.966.2100.
Heritage Park Golf Course ►
H
eritage Park Golf Course located in Olathe, KS, is owned and operated by the Johnson County Park and Recreation District. It was designed by Don
Sechrest, opened in 1980 and consistently ranks as “Must Play.” “Over the years, we’ve tried to change or update a little something now and then, while keeping the character of a links course,” said Manager of Golf Operations Rob Wilkin who’s been at Heritage since 1998. No doubt, they’ve done a great job of that.

ronhorse Golf Club of Leawood, KS, opened in 1995. It is owned by the City of Leawood and operated by Troon Golf. Renowned course designer Dr. Michael Hurdzan designed the 18-hole par 72 championship layout around Nigro Creek,
Rob Wilkin looks at Heritage Park’s par-3 16th, which one day, he would like to convert to an island green. (photo by Alan Hoskins) Today, Heritage Park is known as one of the Kansas City area’s most beautiful courses. It’s layout offers exceptional combinations of traditional tree-lined and links-type holes. Three lakes and Coffee Creek meander through the course bringing water into play on 11 of the 18 holes. The course plays at 6,876 yards from the tips and is a par 71. It is an easy walking course for those so inclined.
which affects play on fifteen holes. Bridges cross the creek at least fifteen times. The course layout has many elevation changes throughout, and you’ll often tee off from elevated teeing grounds. Its quick Bentgrass greens, tree-lined Zoysia fairways and 59 newly rebuilt white sand-filled bunkers make it a shot-makers course and a favorite among Kansas City Metro golfers.
Wide plush Zoysia fairways lead to large undulated greens — like the par-3 16th hole. A deep swale running through the middle of the green, which drastically reduces the availability of pin placements, but adds to the difficulty of the hole played from 132 to 215 yards over a lake. Wilkin would one day like to convert this hole to an island green.
With five individual tee complexes per hole, it’s a good idea to choose the correct yardage for your game. There are significant elevation changes with some amazing views and a creek that comes into play on all 18. Total yardage varies from 6,900 yards from the Black tees to 4,783 yards from the forward (red) tees, with a rating from the back tees of 73.8 and a slope of 140.
One interesting par 4 hole is the 8th. It has a split fairway where you can play right or left of a large tree to a fairway that’s lined with a creek and trees. “It’s just a tremendous hole,” says Wilkin. The course has some demanding par 5s including the 599-yard 15th hole and the 539-yard 18th that requires a big drive and a well-placed second shot to clear a creek that fronts the green. Heritage Park offers very affordable green fee rates ranging from $17 to $30 to walk depending on the time of day and day of the week. Carts are $16 for 18 holes. Located at 16445 Lackman Road in Olathe, KS. Tee times are available by calling 913.829.4653 or online at www.HeritageParkGC.com.

“Ironhorse is filled with memorable holes — including the tantalizingly-drivable (just 271 yards from the white tees), but potentially troublesome par-4 11th hole,” said golf writer John Baccala. “The wonderfully picturesque and challenging par-4 18th is one of the toughest finishing holes in the city. The hole that just might leave the greatest impression is the par-3 2nd. Not because of the hole itself (and it is a beautiful golf hole), but because of the revamped clubhouse and newly created Vista 154 behind it.” With the 2017 clubhouse expansion, recent course upgrades and amenities including a driving range, practice greens, a par 3 course

that offers five tee complexes with the Black (back) tees playing at 6,362 yards up to the forward Red tees at 4,160 yards allowing players of all skill levels to play an enjoyable round of golf based on their ability. Sycamore Ridge Golf Course ►
S
ycamore Ridge Golf Course (photo at top) of Spring Hill, KS, opened in 2000 and has earned numerous national magazine accolades ever since. If you haven’t played it recently — you’re in for a pleasant surprise.
In 2007, architect Todd Clark took six mundane holes on the east end and replaced them with six new holes in a woodlands area south and west of the course, all with elevation changes and a creek to be crossed on hole 5.
This highly-ranked 18-hole championship course is managed by Orion Management Solutions, Inc. In 2015, all bunkers were re-constructed and filled with imported pure-white sand, making them as esthetically attractive and offering a resort-like feel. Some trees were removed to widen and flattened some of the fairway landing areas to make the holes more player-friendly. In addition, new wider cart paths were paved throughout the entire course.
Curt Nelson, General Manager and Director of Golf for Overland Park’s two courses, St. Andrews and the Sykes/Lady golf course says, “It changed the feeling of St. Andrews dramatically. With all of the trees and hills, it has a more ‘Ozarkish’ feel to it.”
“We’ve also re-designed a few of the hole layouts and stripped the Zoysia collars replacing them with Bentgrass and improved the fescue rough to give the course a more private club feel,” says General Manager Ben Perry.
The average green at St. Andrews is about 8,000 square feet, and the course has Bentgrass tees. Situated in a park-like setting, its tree-lined Zoysia fairways challenge both novice and experienced golfers. A par 71
Sycamore Ridge offers superb Bentgrass fairways and greens. Bentgrass fairways are the first to turn lush green in spring and remain green through fall. The course is well-known for its two unique nine-hole layouts. The front

Sunflower Hill Golf Course is a scenic course and extremely popular among area KC golfers. It offers very affordable walking or riding green fees. For more information, call 913.573.8570 or visit www.sunflowerhillsgolfcourse.com. Tomahawk Hills Golf Course is one of the oldest public courses in Kansas City at its original location. Every golfer should play the final picturesque hole on each nine holes it at least once. From the tee boxes on a bluff overlooking a wide expanse of Shawnee, it’s a drop-in elevation of 92 feet on the 170-yard No. 9 and another 98 feet to the green on the 178-yard 18th hole. They’re two of the most memorable holes in Kansas City. Located at 17501 Midland Drive, Shawnee, KS 66218. For more information, call 913.631.8000 or visit www.TomahawkHillsgc.com.

“Because anyone who loves golf, enjoys it here.” Editorial by John Baccala
S
ometimes, golf is simple. Not the game itself, but why we play. That thought really resonated with me when I asked Rob Wilkin, PGA professional and golf operations manager at Heritage Park Golf Course (photo below) in Olathe, KS, why so many golfers play this course? “Because anyone who loves golf, enjoys it here,” he said. Whether striping it down the fairway or slicing it in the trees, there is a lot to enjoy at Heritage Park.
Rob Wilkin, PGA Long an area favorite, Heritage Park’s par 71 course is nestled perfectly in an undeveloped area of Johnson County, and we all know — that’s a rare find. “I think there are several reasons why our patrons love to play here, and one may be the simple fact it’s within the park and not through housing developments,” Wilkin said. “It’s very peaceful and scenic.” And, with four 16

sets of tees with yardages ranging from almost 7,000 to about 5,000 yards, Heritage Park is very “player friendly,” regardless of ability level. “It challenges and rewards at the same time,” he said.
said. But, that’s not to say the par 4s and 5s here are easy — they’re not. Especially the dogleg right par-5 9th, where hitting the “right” (“right” meaning “correct”) side of the rolling fairway is critical.
Your first real challenge on this Don Sechrest-designed course comes quickly on the second hole. This fairly lengthy par 3 is all carry over water and, along with the par-3 16th, gives Heritage Park two of the most formidable and intimidating par 3s in the KC Metro.
“Here’s the thing about 9,” Wilkin said. “It’s just an average length par 5, but you need to place your first two shots.” The tee shot needs to be left of center, but not in the rough. “If you’re on the right, you have to negotiate trees perfectly to have a shorter
“A shot like that, full carry over water, so early in the round intimidates us all,” Wilkin said. From the championship tee, the second hole plays 220 yards and, according to Wilkin, “is more than scary for even the best of players.” Even from the forward tees, just 90 yards away, you need “a solid strike or else you’re nervous.” The par-3 16th at least has a bailout area, but it is no gimme, especially when the wind is in your face — and the green is severely undulated. “Even after a great shot, your par isn’t in the bag until you’ve managed the tricky green,” he said. Tough par 3s are typical of Sechrestdesigned courses, so if you are going to “go low” at Heritage Park, you need to take advantage of the course’s wide fairways. “There’s plenty of room off the tee here, so let it fly on the par 4s and 5s,” Wilkin

The par-5 15th can be played at nearly 600 yards. Above is a photo from the tee. Players need to be cautious of the water at the end of the fairway off the tee. third shot to the green,” he said. “If you catch the left rough off the tee, it may be difficult to hit the second shot far enough to have a scoring club in your hand for your third shot. “If you do put your tee ball in position, you have a chance to reach in two, but the layup area gets rather small. Regardless, your second shot must be well struck, so you can get aggressive and throw a wedge to the pin!”
Heritage Park’s pristine conditions make hitting good (and great) shots easier. Tee boxes and bunkers have recently been upgraded, and the driving range has been laser leveled and features Zoysia turf just like the fairways. “Most of the tee boxes on the course have been converted to Zoysia, and we continue to upgrade our equipment, so we have better playing surfaces on all our grasses,” Wilkin said. “Greens, fairways and roughs all require different approaches to maintenance. We also benefit from an outstanding irrigation system allowing us to keep the course green and healthy. “Players really appreciate the excellent conditions.” Players will also appreciate the newly opened short game area featuring two chipping areas and two practice bunkers. In fact, it’s already drawing rave reviews from Heritage Park patrons. It is an essential part of the game Wilkin said. “Far too few practice the short shots, but should.”
Heritage Park’s par-4 3rd plays 317 yards from the “Regular” tees. Teeing off over water can intimidate some, but with a good tee shot, it’s birdie hole. (photo by John Baccala)
“It’s been needed for a long time,” he said. “Full swings, pitching, chipping and putting are all equally important. Even tour pros are chipping four, five, even six or more times per round.
And, if you really want to test every facet of your golf game, Heritage Park is the place to play. Thanks to its design, Wilkin said a round of golf here offers “a little bit of everything” and leaves you looking forward to a return trip. “You’ll use every club in your bag and when you’re finished, you’ll feel tested, but not beat up,” said Wilkin. Although never authenticated, many have attributed the famous quote “golf is a good walk spoiled” to Mark Twain. If he indeed, actually said that, I contend, he just never played at Heritage Park!
Heritage Park Green Fees Heritage Park offers very affordable green fee rates ranging from $17 to $30 to walk depending on the time of day and day of the week. Carts are an additional $16 for 18 holes. Located at 16445 Lackman Road in Olathe, KS. Tee times are available by calling 913.829.4653 or online at www.HeritageParkGC.com.

The Multi-faceted Heart of America Golf Complex
Three courses offered at Kansas City’s historic, first integrated golf course. Editorial and Photos by Alan Hoskins, Feature Writer
Played at the back tee from 374 yards, the 2nd hole at the River course demands a carry of at least 150 yards over a deep ravine.
A
marshal and longtime early-morning patron, Ron Dunavant calls the Heart of America Golf Course “The best little golf course that no one has ever heard of.” If his assessment is correct, then there’s a lot you need to know about the course in Swope Park.
First, Heart of America is the most multi-faceted golf complex in the greater Kansas City metro area. Second, it has great historical significance; a pioneer in opening the game to golfers of all colors. Third, it houses the Tom Watson Golf Academy, which provides a wealth of opportunities to any young golfer. Boasting a 9-hole regulation course, a 9-hole par 3 course, a 3-hole practice course, driving range and an 18-hole FootGolf course, one could easily spend an entire day at the complex. Rotating tee boxes, play the 9-hole River Course twice (4 hours); the par 3 9-hole Rock course (1½ hours); the 3-hole Hill course/practice facility (1 hour); then add 18 holes of FootGolf (1½ hours), and you (and the family) could easily put in a fun-filled 8-hour day.
when four members of the Heart of America Golf Club, Reuben Benton, George Johnson, Larry Doty and Sylvester Johnson walked into the clubhouse. Told they could not play, they left their money on the counter and walked to the first tee. Calling themselves “The Foursome,” they teed off despite being told the police would be called — a call that apparently was never made because no police ever arrived. And, that is how the course came to be named Heart of America. Here’s a brief look at the course’s many amenities ► The River Course — A shorter par 35 course at 2,604 yards, it is by no means an “executive course” and is probably deserving of the tag “Best little course that no one has ever heard of.” Built into Swope Park’s rolling fairways, water comes into play on more than half the holes as the Blue River meanders through the course. “An ideal place for the better player to work on accu-
Owned by the Kansas City Parks & Recreation Department and managed by Orion Management Solutions, the course dates back to 1924 according to Ken Krakauer’s book, When Golf Came to Kansas City. For most of its years, it was known as Swope No.2 or the Blue River course. Historically, the course became the first “integrated” course in Kansas City thanks to the Heart of America Golf Club. In the 1920s, the only place where black golfers could play was on a rugged former potato field called Grove Center located between Bonner Springs, KS and Kansas City, MO. “The Heart of America Golf Club was organized in 1929 by the Grove Center players and by the mid-1930s, black golfers were admitted to play at Swope Park Course No. 2 — but only on Mondays,” wrote Krakauer. Swope Park, however, remained segregated until March 24, 1950, 22

Heart of America G.C . since 1924 “Told they could not play, they left their money on the counter and walked to the first tee.” An 18-hole course for many years, it was reduced to nine holes in 1994 to make room for a driving range and the par 3 course. A 3-hole junior course also closed and was later replaced by the 3-hole practice facility. In April of 2016, the “Golf Academy” was officially renamed the “Tom Watson Golf Academy” in recognition of his countless contributions to The First Tee of Greater Kansas City and other youth golf programs.
3-hole practice facility situated on a hilltop that provides spectacular views of Kansas City. “Views in the fall are amazing,” says Martin. Tees on each hole are significantly different, and there’s an alternate green on the 2nd hole which offers a variety of ways to play it. The prototype for hundreds of short courses, Heart of America is one of 11 host sites for The First Tee of Greater Kansas City. “It’s a great place to learn to grow your game at your own pace — without feeling intimidated,” says Martin. The green fee is a meager $3.
The No. 1 handicap hole at the Heart of America’s River course, the 482-yard par-5 7th hole requires accuracy off an elevated tee and demanding second and third shots to avoid a deep grassy hazard that crosses the fairway and bunkers fronting the green. The River Course got a major uplift this past winter with a total rebuilding of the bunkers. “Every time we got a big rain the sand would wash down, and we’d have to drain the water,” said Martin. “We put in Better Billy bunkers, which allows for the water to run through synthetic sand without washout. We’ve had no problems since.”
FootGolf — One of the fastest growing new sports — golf with a soccer ball. It’s played on an 18-hole course that weaves throughout the par 3 course and features tee boxes, greens, bunkers, hazards and 21-inch diameter cups to accommodate the soccer ball. Holes are roughly half the distance of a regular golf hole, but soccer balls, which are available for rent, roll much farther in the fairway. “A perfect fit for our facility,” says Martin. Fees are $12 for adults, $8 for juniors under 18.
Other amenities include a year-around driving range, separate chipping/pitching and putting greens, snack bar, pro shop and lessons provided by Martin, a 33-year PGA instructor and former standout at Santa Fe Trail High School, Kansas City Kansas Community College and Washburn University.
The course withstood three 2017 floods in amazing fashion. With a couple of exceptions, Zoysia fairways are in outstanding condition, as are the greens. “Our superintendent, Josh Lynn, has the greens in incredible shape,” says Martin. With a couple of exceptions, there are two tee boxes that can change the playability when played the second time around. For example, the 374-yard 2nd hole needs a drive of at least 150 yards to clear a deep brush-filled ravine. The alternative is 230 yards all uphill. The toughest test is the par 5, 482-yard 7th hole that requires a drive from an elevated tee to a narrow fairway and then uphill to a bunker-guarded green. “The first, second and third shots are all demanding, especially when they’re into a prevailing wind,” says Martin. Green fees are $18 for adults, $16 for seniors and $12 for juniors under 18. Carts are $8 per nine holes. The Rock Course — An attractive par 3 course with water, trees and a couple of hilltop vistas that accentuate its beauty. “A great place for kids and beginners to learn the game, and the more accomplished player to hone their iron play and short game skills,” says Martin. At 1,102 yards, the holes from the back tees range from 85 to 157 yards with the longest hole No. 7 that offers a panoramic view of the course and surrounding terrain from a hillside ridge. Fees are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $8 for juniors. Carts are available for $5 per nine holes.
FootGolf green with 21inch cup
Regular golf greens and FootGolf greens with 21-inch diameter cups can be found almost by side on the Heart of America’s par 3 Rock course. The Heart of America golf complex is also available for birthday parties, corporate outings and more. For more information, call 816.513.8940 or visit www.HOAgolfcourse.com. Why is Micro Carbon Technology Quicker, Better, More Powerful ?
Because it’s Smaller…
n a time where everything is getting bigger, stronger and faster, smaller can be better. Is bigger better? Pickup trucks with huge tires and lift kits are bigger. Small companies are absorbed into big companies; big companies are getting even bigger. Even golfers are bigger, stronger, hitting the ball further than ever. And yet . . . .
Smaller Is Quickly Absorbed. If you watch TV commercials, you’ll notice that smaller can sometimes be powerful. An aspirin company claims smaller aspirin particles quickly relieve pain. A topical for sore muscles claims small particles in the lotion are absorbed quickly, also relieving pain quickly. Even small bits of candy pack a big burst of flavor. Mobile technology makes my “small” cell phone more powerful than my old “larger” desktop computer. The same holds true with turf and soil. Micro Carbon Technology® (MCT) is Smaller. Just like the aspirin and lotion, Huma Gro® Turf uses small particles to activate soil microbiology and quickly absorb nutrients into the plant. Huma Gro Turf products do this with Micro Carbon Technology. MCT is a very small carbon molecule that is a fraction of the size of humic, fulvic or acid molecules. It’s a simple concept — the smaller the molecule, the more active that molecule. The more active the molecule, the more that molecule can accomplish. MCT is a Nutrient Carrier. MCT is a carbon and oxygen-rich organic molecule that moves nutrients into the plant through the soil and/or leaves. In this situation, nutrients attach to the carbon, which acts as a carrier to transport the nutrients into the plant through the leaf in a foliar application or through the root system in a soil application. MCT Protects Nutrients. MCT protects the nutrient molecule as it is transported into the plant. This protection reduces phytotoxicity in foliar application. Nutrients immediately penetrate the leaf. In a soil application, nutrients are freely taken up by the root system without being tied up in the soil. Nutrient deficiencies are quickly reversed. MCT Stimulates Microbes. Soil health is key to healthy turf. Not only is soil fertility important to soil health, but a diverse and healthy soil biology is also imperative. An abundance of beneficial microbes, bacteria, and fungi create a healthy soil environment and suppress soil-borne pathogens and disease. MCT stimulates beneficial bacteria and fungi in the soil, enhancing the activity and reproduction of microbiology that improves soil structure.
MCT Attains Soil Health Naturally. Huma GroTurf soil products with MCT achieve soil health naturally. No foreign microbes, bacteria, or fungi are added to the soil. Healthy soil biology is achieved through feeding the beneficial microbes that are not only present in all soil but unique to the individual soil. Using MCT as a base, Huma Gro Turf has developed a full line of highly efficient products that make up a complete sustainable turf program. All Huma Gro Turf Products Contain MCT. Sustainable Soil Fertility products with MCT flocculate hard soils. They relieve the stress of saline soils and heavy metals, enabling mineral nutrition of 26

the turf. MCT promotes oxygenation and aeration, improving water penetration and water-holding capacity and freeing up nutrients in the root-zone. Optimal Growth Management products encourage the natural production of plant hormones for quick and long-term results. With Micro Carbon Technology, turf shows an almost immediate boost of energy, growth, vigor, and rooting. These products provide and maintain a long-term, natural plant hormonal balance. MCT allows optimal management of plant growth by promoting natural production of hormones within the plant itself that are quickly produced and naturally controlled. Huma Gro’s Macronutrients and Micronutrients with MCT offer a variety of packaged fertilizer products that deliver all the essential macronutrients, secondary macronutrients, and micronutrients to promote the strong, steady turf growth and produces a better, greener turf. All include MCT for better transportation and absorption of nutrients by plants. All nutrient products can be applied in the soil or with a foliar spray, without phytotoxicity. Huma Gro’s organic Zero-Residue Turf Protection products are OMRI® listed for environmentally-conscious superintendents to maximize the control of a broad spectrum of insects, nematodes, bacterial and/or fungal plant diseases, and pathogens—with no down time required! Huma Gro’s natural Carbon-Rich Organic Acids are similar to the chemical make-up of the plants themselves, so roots or leaves easily assimilate nutrients and effectively put them to work. With our organic acids, turf and ornamentals maximize the potential of your fertilizer, resulting in better germination, more efficient foliar applications, and strong, healthy growth. Huma Gro’s blend of nonionic Surfactants improves the penetration and distribution of water within the soil profile, ensuring that turf managers get the most out of their applied water and water-carried inputs. Yes, Small Can Be Powerful. Build a healthy turf on the foundation of a healthy, fertile soil that is teaming with healthy microorganisms. Healthy microbiology, soil, and turf are created and maintained with Huma Gro Turf products containing MCT. The tiny carbon molecules of MCT have proven that smaller can be powerful in today’s trend of more, bigger, stronger. To Learn more, contact your local Huma Gro Turf representative TJ Blankenship of Green Partners USA at 816.519.6737 or email TJ@GreenPartnersUSA.com for specific recommendations. Huma Gro Turf products include Micro Carbon Technology® (MCT), a proprietary blend of very small organic molecules that allows for more effective absorption of nutrients by plants. Midwest PGA
M
Golf Professional of the Year Announced
embers of the Midwest Section PGA are no strangers to winning awards and receiving accolades for accomplishments both on and off the golf course. One might even go so far as to say all the noteworthy praises metaphorically sung about these golf professionals stand in strong alignment with the definition of success. However, upon closer examination, success for these individuals is not necessarily measured by how many awards are received. Success for this group of Midwest PGA golf professionals grows from doing something they love, appreciate and deem as worthwhile. The awards are just by-products of doing what comes naturally to these people: using the game of golf as a tool by which to serve others and introduce the game to those who might not otherwise have been given the opportunity to pick up a club and set foot on a golf course. For the Midwest Section PGA members, golf is clearly a game for a lifetime, and to that end, the Section remains committed to recognizing members who have upheld that vision through noteworthy decorations, including the notable Midwest Section PGA Golf Professional of the Year Award. Presented on an annual basis since 1974, this award “honors the working PGA member whose total contributions to the game best exemplify the complete PGA Professional.” Among the chief criteria for receiving this award include one’s overall performance as a PGA Professional at the facility at which he or she works; service to the Section and the Association; strong leadership skills; overall image and the ability to inspire fellow PGA Professionals, as well as apprentices; and lastly, dedicating time to the continued promotion of the game. This year’s recipient, Chad Myers, is the head professional and clubhouse manager at Wamego Country Club in Wamego, KS. To say he is extremely humbled by this honor is an understatement, and his sincere words of appreciation for this recognition strongly reflect the Section’s precedence for uplifting others.
by Ann E. Butenas, Contributing Writer
about that monumental decision. By 2001, Myers had completed his membership to the PGA. In April of 2014, he transitioned to his current job at Wamego and has not looked back.
“There is a long list of great golf professionals prior to myself who have received this honor, and I am more than honored and deeply humbled to be recognized among this group,” emphasized Myers. Raised in Manhattan, KS, Myers developed an affinity for golf while just a preschooler. He would toddle around at that age watching his dad play and just “chasing my dad around the course!” Myers went on to play on the golf team at Manhattan High School and then transitioned to the golf teams respectively at Garden City Community College and then Cloud County Community College, eventually participating as a walk-on player for Kansas State University, from which he graduated with a degree in social science with an emphasis on criminal justice. After college, Chad packed his bags and headed to Las Vegas with his wife, where he played on the mini tour circuit. Realizing that was not the best route for his professional goals, Myers took a part-time job at a golf course in Las Vegas, eventually transitioning to a full-time role as assistant professional. During his time as an assistant professional, Myers started working towards his PGA membership in the Professional Golf Management Program, and while working towards completing all requisites to become a PGA member, he received a call from the head professional at Stagg Hill Golf Club back in his hometown.
“I can’t see myself doing anything else outside of the golf business,” noted Myers, who had no shame in admitting his affinity for being out on the golf course as often as possible. “One of my greatest passions is teaching others the game, as well as utilizing my knowledge of the sport to get new people into the game, especially junior players.” In addition to his drive to introduce as many people as possible to the game, Myers is also known for his service to the Section and the community. A member of the Midwest Section PGA since 2000, Myers has lent his talents in various capacities, serving on the board in multiple executive roles over the span of 15 years. Although he is not one to dance in the spotlight, Myers is appreciative of his peers for recognizing the dedication he has continually poured into his work. “It is nice they notice what you do and that they see the hard work you have done throughout your career,” Meyer’s proudly said. Myers was honored at the Midwest Section’s annual awards banquet at Prairie Band Casino and Resort in Mayetta, KS, on October 22, and joked, “I had to put down my clubs for a second to make room in my hands for this award!” Once a golfer, always a golfer.
“I was asked if I would be interested in the Head Professional position available at the time at Colbert Hills Golf Course, so I submitted my resume, got an interview and ultimately was offered the job,” recalled Myers, who did not have to think twice
