From The Editor

W

Bill Cromwell, Editor-in-Chief TEE TIMES GOLF GUIDE™ Magazine

A Golfer’s Rant ell, I’m bummed! Golf summer is gone, and now, we’ll have to deal with those blasted leaves! How many dang golf balls am I going to lose this fall? None. I’ll just run down to Golf Ball Paul’s and buy them back. That guy is cashing in on me!

I obviously didn’t play enough golf this summer — my scores are the same as last year. How can you play as much golf as I do and not improve? It’s just crazy. My golf friend, who I beat regularly, keeps telling me he can fix me with one golf swing tip — Shut Up! That ain’t gonna happen, we both know it, and ain’t is not a word. I’m not playing from the “Tips” either. Ain’t gonna happen! I did have a couple of great rounds this year, shot a three over 75 at WinterStone — 40 on the front and one-under 35 on the back. Shot a fantastic 83 at Shoal Creek. You’re thinking 83 is not great? Check this out, I shot 48 on the front and even par 35 on the back. How’s that possible? I remembered some golf tips we published a few issues back by Head Golf Professional Rhett Fregoe, PGA, at Shoal Creek Golf Course and went on to hit every green in regulation on the back nine and two-putt for par. The guy that shot the 48 on the front must be the real me though because several days later and playing Shoal Creek again, I shot another 48 on the front nine and 40 on the back. Wait a minute! It’s not me at all. Shoal Creek is to blame; the front nine is just too dang hard. Ahh! Wish it were that simple. Ever play behind “Pack Golfers?” Those are the guys/gals that move in two-cart packs. All four golfers gather at one golf ball, wait for one golfer to decide what club to hit, then he hits the ball, and the pack moves to the next ball — a few feet away, and the process starts all over. This is called “Not-ready Golf.” Eventually, they gather on the green where gimmes from three feet are good. I like that idea for a new 2019 rule. I’ll shoot more 75s. Well one day, our group is waiting and watching this “Pack Golf” process for 18 holes. We’re ranting and raving (in our minds) waiting on every shot — go to your own ball and play ready golf. It just seemed like an endless five-hour round of golf. On the 18th green, I looked at my Bushnell GPS watch’s pace-of-play feature — Shut Up, we played in three hours 45 minutes. A lot of wasted ranting — we’re just playing too fast. Maybe, that’s how those 48s happen. Love this game! Who wants to golf tomorrow? I’ll bring the leaf blower. Thank you for reading our magazine. Enjoy your golf!

Stone Canyon to Host 3rd Annual Impacting Lives Fundraising Tournament

Excelsior Springs Golf Course to Open New Clubhouse

I

T

he 3rd Annual Stone Canyon Golf Club of Blue Springs, MO, Impacting Lives Fundraising Tournament to benefit both Youth and Military will be held on October 13. Partnering with the Midwest Section PGA, the event is sponsored by D&D Golf, the owner of Stone Canyon.

n October 2017, the old clubhouse at Excelsior Springs Golf Course was demolished with a plan to unveil the new clubhouse late this year. The new clubhouse is the centerpiece of the city of Excelsior Springs’ $2-million dollar revitalization plan on and around the golf course.

The new clubhouse will be slightly smaller than the old historic clubhouse, but it will sit near the same location as the old clubhouse. During the demolition and new construction process city crews took special care not to damage the nearly 200-year-old O’Dell Cabin (photo on left), built in the 1820s, which was housed inside the old clubhouse. The historic O’Dell Cabin once occupied land where the golf course was built. The cabin will once again be enclosed in the new clubhouse, so it can be admired by golf course patrons.

Shown here is the skeleton of the new clubhouse. During construction the historic O’Dell Cabin cabin is being enclosed in the new clubhouse. “The cabin is historic,” said Tim Jarman, PGA director of golf. “Enclosing it in the new clubhouse will protect it from the elements once again.” Jarman says, he is anticipating the newly-built clubhouse to be ready sometime this fall. While the new clubhouse is under construction, golfers are asked to check in next door at the Municipal Airport. A unique golfing experience awaits you at Excelsior Springs Golf Course. “SNAG, which stands for ‘Starting New at Golf,’ has a great curriculum that meets most Midwest Section PGA standards with great equipment that is used in a school’s gym setting and is very safe,” said Rick Holtcamp, a PGA quarter century member and GM/director of golf at Stone Canyon Golf Club. “With local PGA professionals training PE teachers and the Midwest Section PGA Foundation providing the equipment, we can help make golf a key component of our elementary and middle schools' PE programs." "Stone Canyon Golf Club wants to be a leading force to help grow the game of golf within the Kansas City Metro but especially within the Blue Springs community, which is our home,” said Kevin Stallings, owner of D&D Golf. “We feel like these fund-raising initiatives help grow the game and fit perfectly with our company mission statement.” For 2018, the annual tournament has grown to include fundraising efforts for the Folds of Honor and PGA HOPE (Helping our Patriots Everywhere) initiative, the flagship military program of PGA REACH, which is designed to introduce the game of golf to veterans struggling with disabilities, offering them a fun and engaging way to assimilate back into society and enhance their overall well-being — physically, mentally, socially and emotionally. “The Midwest Section PGA members are strong supporters and dedicated to these programs, which help all veterans who have courageously served our country,” said Midwest Section PGA Executive Director Brad Demo. Holtcamp says, this is a significant funds raising effort for PGA HOPE, Folds of Honor and SNAG. “One hundred percent of the proceeds through our fundraising efforts will go through the Midwest Section PGA’s Foundation and will be distributed to SNAG, Folds of Honor and the PGA HOPE program. “Our goal is to help grow the game and introduce it to youth and veterans as a sport of a lifetime,” said Holtcamp. The tournament, a four-person scramble, will tee off Saturday, October 13, with a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. Flight prizes, many contests, hole-in-one prizes, raffle, player gifts, plus great food and beverages are all included with the $113 per player ($452 per team) entry fee. Sponsors are also needed to help with this initiative. Contact Rick Holtcamp at rholtcamp@stonecanyongolfclub.com. Best Tee I’ve Ever Used How I used one tee for 8-years. . . by Bill Cromwell

F

or most golfers, I suspect golf tees are no big deal. However, for other golfers, the correct tee means everything and can make or break their golf round, so much so that they cannot mentally focus on the upcoming tee shot if they don’t have the golf ball perched perfectly atop their favorite tee.

prototypes, I can honestly say it is a significant improvement. The ball literally can be flopped on the tee. It is very accommodating to a tee that is not inserted straight. There is no change in the low resistance of the ball release as the ball is always impacted first and is on its way before the club contacts the tee. The ‘Tri-Pod’ set method creates literally no interference.”

I’ve been using a G2 Flex Tee for 8 years. I repeat, “One Tee for eight years,” and on every drive that I teed up. I play nearly 100 rounds per year — that’s a lot of tee shots. Every time I teed up, someone in the group would razz me, “Oh Bill’s got his favorite tee out again –– Mr. Down the Middle.” My response, always the same, “I like it because I’m teeing it up at the same height every time, and it never breaks!” Again, it’s the only tee I’ve used for the driver over the last 8 years –– and it never broke.

The new G3 has a stronger shaft and stake. The company says, the tee shaft was also increased in thickness, overall by 20%, to accommodate a wider ball set. While you could not break the G2, this makes the G3 tee even stronger than before, because of the extraordinary polymer that it uses, the “SnapFlex” is unchanged. The “fluted” stake was shortened slightly and made stiffer. This has increased the tees ability to accommodate hard soil. The surface of the tee is now glossy. It makes the tees look cool yes, but it also aids in keeping soil from sticking to the shaft — clean dirt-free pockets, I like that.

Regardless, the friends always give me a hard time, because if my favorite tee flew out of the ground, I would search until I found it. Of course, after the razing, they wanted me to give them one to try or asked where they could buy them, but I only had one left. Sadly, I lost the best golf tee I’ve ever used (and trust me, I’ve used/tried them all) after teeing up during a recent round of golf. It started raining and I rushed off the tee box heading for shelter –– left my G2 tee stuck in the ground. Surely, some other lucky golfer is now using it –– for another 8-years! Days later, I went in search of a new G2 Flex Tee only to discover the manufacture has a newer improved model called the G3 Flex Tee. Now, how can you improve a tee that lasts 8-years is baffling to me too. In fact, I can’t understand how a company could stay in business selling a product like a golf tee that last 8-years. Talk about getting your money’s worth! THE NEW G3 FLEX-HEAD TEES Flex-Head Tees is located in Wisconsin, and all of its products are made in the U.S. by local suppliers. “Our customers had very few complaints about our G2 tees. Very few. But they were kind enough to help us improve an already great product, so we listened,” says Mark Gruenwald, President/Owner of Flex-Head Tees, Inc. “Besides regretting losing the tee, they suggested a larger ball set, so with the G3, we made it as large as practical, while maintaining the tees durability. The ball set on the G3 is almost 50% larger in area than the older G2 model. It’s also reinforced for strength,” said Gruenwald. “As the inventor, and having used G2’s since early 10

NEW G3 — ARROW ON THE SHOULDER The height shoulder (or stopper) represents a significant aspect of the G2 and G3 design. It was the primary driver behind the original development of the tee to start with. The largest inconsistency for golfers is teeing a golf ball correctly to the same height every time. The shoulder eliminates that issue. It is also the largest issue that can change your game. The importance of “consistent tee heights” and “Centeredness of Contact” is why I prefer Flex-Head tees. I’m sure that if you ask a PGA professional or club manufacturers, they will tell you that you must tee the ball at the correct height to get the most out of your driver — AKA, hitting it in the sweet spot. The new G3 tee’s shoulder has a “Pointer” (see photo on left) that shows you which way to point the tee when inserting it into the ground. Gruenwald says, “Always point the arrows towards your target. This makes the ‛Bending Relief Holes’ in the shaft align correctly. The tee will work just fine in any position, but the low resistance ‛Snap-Flex’ is achieved with the holes toward the target.” My older G2 did not have the “Pointer,” so this is a nice improvement — the G3 should last me even longer. With “Snap-Flex” the tee never breaks — how do they stay in business? www.TeeTimesMagazine.com

In all, what means the most to me is the G3 is going to tee my ball to the same height every time I tee up. Sure, it’s up to me to swing properly, but if I do, I’m confident that my driver will contact the ball more often in the “Sweet Spot,” giving me the most from my driver. I truly don’t mind being called, “Mr. Down the Middle” for the next 8 years. One Tee for 8 years! Certainly got my $1.75 out of the Flex Tee.

NEW G3 — BRILLIANT COLORS The “Optic Yellow” is a popular option for today’s golf balls. The “Optic Orange” is a close second. We love bright red, so we kept that. White is a traditional golf tee color, and it’s a really easy tee to find if the white is bright. Pink, a favorite new color. Ladies represent nearly 50% of Flex-Head Tees customers, and they’ve requested pink for a long time. Here are the new G3 color choices: • Optic Yellow • Optic Orange • Bright Red • Bright Pink • Bright White

TWO NEW G3 TEES! The new G3-NS tee stands for “No Shoulder.” Think of it as the short G3-50 without the shoulder. It’s perfect for teeing “way down” on par 3 holes. It can easily be adjusted to a height above the G3-50 as well. The G3-NS still has a nice wide “Tri-Pod” ball set, less than the others, but easy to tee. It’s also just as durable. My picks are the G3-175 and G3-250 which is the longest tee available while still living within the USGA rules. It’s 4 inches overall in length with 2.5 inches above ground ball set height. This is truly a “Long Drive Tee.” It doesn’t need to be inserted to the height shoulder either, so 2 inches above ground can be 3inches if desired. You decide. If you like to “Let it fly” this is the tee for you. The G3-175 is slightly shorter at 3.25 inches and I’ll use this for shorter grass height tee boxes.

Golf Memberships Starting at Only $69 per Month! Perfect for the Entire Family!

“We take pride in our customer service, and we don’t create useless corporate edicts when it comes to our customers or our product development,” said Gruenwald. “We offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee on all of our products. Our ‘You break it, we replace it — For Life’ is not a gimmick. If you do manage to break our tee [you’ll be in a very elite group], simply contact us by email, and we will promptly send you a replacement. All we ask is that you send the broken one or an image of it.”

Pack Your Golf Travel Bags and Head South This Winter Editorial by Bill Cromwell

I

t’s time to start planning for that winter golf getaway, but you can’t go without your clubs safe and securely stored in a good travel bag. CaddyDaddy Travel Bags are as well-made (rugged) as I’ve found, and they’re extremely affordable.

to protect exposed clubs and the double outside zippers easily lock your bag. I love the double locking outside straps. The CDX-10 Golf Travel Cover is only $69.99, you’ll pay twice that price for similar name-brand golf travel bags. When you’re not using the bag or storing the clubs in the truck of the car, simply fold it in half and store it away — can’t do that with those big hard cover travel bags!

This is an excellent travel golf bag. The bag definitely has enough storage space for your golf clubs, and even more for your shoes, golf balls and other stuff you need. Compared to others I’ve used, CaddyDaddy travel bags are very light (weight just 9 lbs. for the CDX-10 Golf Travel Cover) and with golf clubs, shoes and a few jackets, it’s still under the 50-pound weight limit for flights.

In-Line heels Skate W y a for E s Rolling. The CDX-10 Golf Travel Cover weight is just 9 lbs, leaving plenty of space for extras while staying under the 50-pound,weight limit. Don’t let the affordable factor fool you! You could easily spend twice as much for a similar bag. Durable 600D all-weather fabric construction, heavy-duty rolling wheels, rugged handles on top and side, several side pockets, two outside oversized shoe pockets for extra gear, plus straps inside the bag to keep your golf club/bag secure. Five Women Golf Professionals at Overland Park Golf Courses Five female golf pros at St. Andrews and Sykes/Lady may be most in the nation. editorial and photography by Alan Hoskins

I

n an industry in which female golf professionals are gold, Overland Park’s a multi-millionaire. Of the 29,000 PGA golf professionals in the U.S., only 1,900 are women. “Courses are begging for women professionals,” says instructor Gianna Augustine. And yet, the City of Overland Park, KS’s two courses — St. Andrews and Sykes/Lady — employ five female golf professionals on its staff. No such formal records are available, but the two Overland Park courses may have the most women golf professionals in the nation. At least Director of Operations Curt Nelson has not heard of five at any one course. “Maybe California, Florida, Arizona, but even then, it wouldn’t be many,” Nelson surmises. It wasn’t planned that way. Females with outstanding backgrounds and resumes topped the list when new jobs opened. Maureen Olson, the Director of Instruction for both courses, and Jennifer Clark, the head professional at St. Andrews, are both PGA Class A professionals. Longtime instructor Liz Smart is an LPGA Class A professional; Gianna Augustine is just a step away from LPGA Class A status; and Bess Quick is in the LPGA apprentice program. That’s half the professional staff at the two courses. Olson, Smart and Augustine give instruction at both courses. Clark is the head pro at St. Andrews; Quick the first assistant at Sykes/Lady.

“I think it’s amazing we have so many strong and dynamic females on our staff,” says Olson, who has been Director of Instruction since 2015 after staff stints at Kansas City Country Club and Blue Hills Country Club. “It’s so rare to have five females within the same organization — I truly believe it’s an asset to each course.” With the new staff additions have come new programs. Olson initiated a year-round “#likeagirl” instruction program for girls 8-14 years of age in 2015. “We started with five girls, and now, we average about 50 a week in the summer,” says Olson. New this year is a social “Girls Night Out” league designed to introduce women to competitive golf in a fun atmosphere and without any pressure. “We started in April with about 12, and now, we’re up to 35,” says Quick. “Attrition is very important. We may have 100 women take lessons, but only five or 10 play on a regular basis. We want to make it so not so many drop out.” Instruction-wise, it’s about 50-50. “I still give lessons to a few more men, but I think women are more comfortable and probably less intimidated working with women,” says Olson. Smart, in her 22nd year of teaching, says, “I try to make each student feel comfortable and at ease because everyone’s ability and comprehension levels are different and cannot be taught by the same method.” www.TeeTimesMagazine.com

Five Female Golf Pros There are six long-standing leagues for women (nine- and 18-hole and par 3) at which Smart can be found greeting players, passing out scorecards and answering questions. “That’s a huge part of our success, the league relationships,” says Nelson. “It’s all about personalities and connections.” The two courses also boast one of, if not the biggest, First Tee and juniors golf programs within the Kansas City Metro area. A program coordinator for the First Tee of Greater Dallas for three years, Augustine returned to Kansas City to direct the First Tee of Greater Kansas City in 2017, taking a program with under 600 participants to more than 1,300 in one year before joining the OP courses. More than 1,500 boys and girls are involved in junior programs offered between the two courses with nearly 400 taking part in the Everett Vinzant-John Cosnotti Memorial Tournament held each summer. With Olson, Smart and Quick teaching at both courses, it’s built strong relationships not only with the female staff members, but male PGA members Mike Tanner, Tony Roberts, Tyson Spratt, JB Kim and Sean Chalk. “We are always supporting each other at St. Andrews and Sykes/Lady, so it makes for a great team atmosphere,” says Clark. Quick agrees, “Such a privilege to work here and especially with such a strong group of professionals.” A glimpse of the OP women staffers in order of their hiring: Liz Smart — Known professionally as Liz Smart, Elizabeth SmartHinton was a member of three state championship teams at SM East and 1980 Kansas state junior champion. Studied under legendary Stan Thirsk and Peggy Kirk Bell. After collegiate career at Oklahoma State, won Kansas City’s City tournament and Missouri Amateur in 1986. Two years on LPGA Futures Tour, then qualified for LPGA season in 1989. Returned to the Futures Tour for four years and played two years on Asian Tour. Played in 1991 U.S. Open at The Colonial before working one year at Blue Hills Country Club Currently in her 22nd year at Overland Park. Jennifer Clark — Had an outstanding career at Piper High School (KS), winning two Kansas state championships and 27 consecutive high school tournaments. Two-time Kenneth Smith award recipient as Kansas City’s best girls golfer. Won two Kansas Junior state titles and played in three national junior tourneys. Played collegiately at Kansas, finishing second in 2008 Marilynn Smith Invitational. Kansas Women’s Amateur champion in 2008 and 2011 Public Links qualifier. In her sixth year at St. Andrews, promoted to head professional November 2017. Midwest Section PGA Apprentice/Assistant of the Year in 2016.

Maureen Olson — Didn’t start playing golf until her freshman year at Nebraska City High School, but finished 7th in state as senior. She did not play competitive golf at University of Nebraska, instead, she became the first female to complete the PGA Golf Management program. Olson served internships at Carnoustie, Pinehurst, Arbor Links and Oak Hills before becoming merchandiser and first assistant at Wilderness Ridge (Lincoln, NE) in 2009-11 where she was Nebraska’s PGA Assistant of the Year in 2011. First assistant at Kansas City Country Club in 2012, head pro at Wilderness Ridge in 2013 and 2014 teaching pro at Blue Hills. Olson was named OP Director of Instruction in 2015, and she was Midwest PGA Player Development Award recipient and First Tee Coach of the Year in 2016. Gianna Augustine — Formerly Gianna Misenhelter, Augustine was National High School Golf Coaches All-American in 2009 after winning three straight Kansas state championships at St. Thomas Aquinas. Undefeated as sophomore, she won 29 of 35 high school tournaments and at Kansas State finished second in the 2011 Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational. Augustine had seven Top 10 and 16 Top 20 finishes. Won 2011 and 2014 Kansas Women’s Amateur titles and qualified for eight USGA championships highlighted by reaching match play in woman’s U.S. Amateur in 2011. She was the First Tee coordinator in Dallas, TX, (2015-17) and then First Tee of Kansas City in 2017. She joined the OP staff in June 2018. Bess Quick — Newest member of the OP staff, she was named first assistant at Sykes-Lady in April. Quick had a standout high school career at the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Birmingham, MI. She was a three-year golf team captain that won Catholic League title in 2008 and finished 4th in the 2009 Michigan state tournament, was All-Catholic and All-State player, coached high school team two years while at Michigan State University and then varsity coach five years and middle school for two years at Sacred Heart. Quick is currently at level 2 on way to earning LPGA Class B status as part of the LPGA Teacher Education program. Nelson said, “I personally don’t care about a person’s race, gender or color; I just look for the best, and we have it right here with these five.”  #likeagirl @ www.golfop.com Alan Hoskins, Golf Writer Lead Feature Writer since 2007 TEE TIMES GOLF GUIDE™ Magazine

Chris Mabry

The Journey to Head Professional Status

N

by Ann E. Butenas, Contributing Writer

ewly-appointed Head Golf Professional at Lawrence County Club (LCC) in Lawrence, KS, Chris Mabry may not realize it, but he has fully subscribed to the career philosophy of the late Steve Jobs: “The only way to do great work is to love what you do.” By all appearances, Mabry loves what he does, so the obvious translation is he does great work. Most importantly, the work he does clearly makes him happy. In turn, the people he serves are continually on the receiving end of some wonderful and memorable golfing experiences at LCC. Prior to this auspicious appointment, Mabry (photo on left) was the Assistant Professional at Lake Quivira Country Club in Lake Quivira, KS, a position he assumed in 2010, and one he held until he transitioned to LCC in April of this year. However, his golf resume` is a journey of a thousand steps that brought him to this role. Raised in the Kansas City area, Mabry developed his love for the game with his father as a young boy on the greens at Indian Hills Country Club in Mission Hills, KS, where his parents are still members. Mabry attended Bishop Miege High School where he excelled in a variety of sports, including golf, nabbing the State title during both his junior and senior years. He then translated those skills at the collegiate level playing for the University of Missouri at Columbia. “When I was in college, I knew I wanted to play golf professionally,” Mabry recalled. After earning his degree in Landscape Architecture, Mabry packed his bags and headed to Scottsdale, AZ, his appetite aroused for that professional dream. It was there he devoted three years to playing golf on various mini tours. Returning to his hometown roots, Mabry applied for the Professional Golf Management Program and successfully completed the requisite work to become a member of the PGA. He has been with the Midwest Section PGA since 2010. Even though the academics of golf provided him with a wealth of knowledge, he equally credits one of his biggest mentors for instilling the knowledge and skills which he practices today. “Tom Aikmus [head golf professional] at Lake Quivira was a significant mentor of mine, and it was from him I learned what it truly takes to be a PGA Professional,” said Mabry, who admitted it was difficult to leave Lake Quivira and go to Lawrence but 16

realized he could not pass up the opportunity. “It was a fantastic opportunity, and it’s what you try to achieve as an assistant pro,” he noted. “But, sure, it was definitely hard to leave Lake Quivira, as I had developed so many amazing relationships there.” For Mabry, getting up every day and making the trek from his home in Leawood, KS, (where he lives with his wife Sara and their two young sons) to Lawrence is pure bliss. With roughly 40 miles between home and work, he has plenty of time to reflect upon his life, his work and his passions. “This was a good move for me,” he expressed. “It’s always what you aspire to do as an Assistant Golf Professional, to move up to that next step.” While there is certainly work to be done on a daily basis, Mabry doesn’t mind at all. “The members here are phenomenal and lots of fun,” he smiled. “We also have such a great team working here, including Steve Goracy, assistant golf professional, and we are currently in the process of further developing our ladies’ and junior golf programs.” Despite his strong leadership role, Mabry will always be a teacher at heart and cannot imagine not devoting time to that endeavor. “I love to teach the game,” he said. “I try to allocate at least a couple of hours each day for teaching — I think it is really important to do.” When gazing at his future, Mabry sees himself happily immersed in the game of golf, not so much for playing the game itself (although that is important!) but more for how it helps to build solid connections with others, both on and off the course. “I like being around people, building relationships and teaching the game,” he commented. “Being in the golf business is about building relationships with members and that is one of the greatest aspects of this job.” There is, however, one significant challenge Mabry has had to overcome since taking the job at LCC. “I have to see that Jayhawk logo everywhere,” the Missouri Tiger laughed. “But that’s okay. My wife graduated from KU. It is a great school, and Lawrence is a special town.” In addition to his position at LCC, Mabry has also gained certain celebrity status of late through the Top Golf Tour Championship, www.TeeTimesMagazine.com

How to Go-Low

Using Course Management

D

uring post round media interviews, tour players will often discuss what their “game plan” was for that particular round. What they mean by their “game plan” is how they managed their way around the golf course. As many of us do, tour players will also face certain holes that don’t fit their eye or holes that take them out of their comfort zone. What professionals do to cope with being out of their comfort zone is to use clubs they feel most comfortable using, which allows them to keep the ball in play on holes when they are out of their comfort zone. In other words, they put themselves in a better position to succeed on holes on which they are not comfortable. I look at course management as a way of limiting your mistakes off the tee. If you can get your ball in play (the fairway) off the tee, then the next shot you play will be with shorter clubs, which are easier to keep in play.

tees and 343 from the white tees. If you are someone who struggles with hitting your driver dead straight with 100% confidence, then I recommend teeing off with a 3-wood or long-iron on this hole. Find the fairway off the tee with the club you love! Hint: The 14th hole in the warmer months is always downwind. With that being said, your 3-wood will often carry as far as your driver downwind, and your chances of hitting the ball straight increase as the 3-wood is a shorter and easier club to hit. Look at it this way, if a hole is 343 yards and you hit a 190-yard shot off the tee, you’ll have a reasonable 153-yard shot to the green and two putts for par. Or, you can hit a driver in the trees, gain a penalty stroke and two-putt for bogie (or worse). Course management is a better option.

Most higher handicap amateurs would shave strokes off their scores if they could keep their ball in the fairway for an entire hole. Too often, I see golfers automatically grabbing their driver on every par 4 or par 5 they face. Think about the golf courses that you play the most and ask yourself, where is the trouble located on most holes? Where are you losing balls and gaining penalty strokes? Course designers will design holes to penalize golfers for inaccurate tee shots. If you think about the driver and what happens with the slightest change in angle of the clubface in addition to the amount of ball speed versus an iron, a driver will cause your ball to fly to the left or right very easily off the tee if not struck well. Sometimes, grabbing your 3-wood, hybrid or a long-iron is a better option on some holes. Your goal on a par 4, is to get the ball in the fairway so you have a reasonable length second shot at the green. For example, let’s use hole number 14 at Shoal Creek. Take notice from the tee box there is trouble both left and right of the fairway off the tee, but the overall distance of the hole is not overwhelming — just 387 yards from the blue October 2018

Another hole at Shoal Creek that requires “Course Management” is the par-4 12th hole. The hole is a short 321 yards from the blue tees with tree-trouble on both sides of the fairway, and a creek fronting the green that’s reachable from the tee with a driver. Hit a club off the tee that will leave you with a second shot to the green of 130- to 100-yards and two-putt for par. Or, you can hit a driver in the trees or creek, gain a penalty stroke and two-putt for bogie. Course management is a better option. To improve your course management, I have a challenge for you. The next time you play, I want you to try for minimum of nine holes, to tee off on every par 4 and par 5 with a club other than your driver. You will be surprised how much your scores will lower when you can keep your ball in play (the fairway) off the tee. Good luck with the course management challenge, and let me know how well it works for you.  Rhett Fregoe, PGA, is the head golf professional at Shoal Creek Golf Course, 8905 N Shoal Creek Pkwy, Kansas City, MO 64157, 816.407.7242. Western Missouri’s Best “Bucket List” Courses Editorial and Photography by Bill Cromwell, Publisher

Stone Canyon’s par-4 3rd signature hole will give golfers a beautiful view of a green surrounds by an amphitheater of stone walls and sand bunkers. Teeing off from an elevated teeing ground over a ravine to a plush Bentgrass fairway. It’s a fun hole to play!

W

estern Missouri offers many incredible public golf courses to play, many of which rank highly nationally. We have selected the following seven top Missouri golf courses (listed alphabetically) as the Kansas City area’s “Best Bucket List” courses to play and a few additional “Must Plays.” These courses were selected based on consistent high levels of course conditions and outstanding services in all operational categories throughout the season including: memorability, superb course conditions, service, aesthetics, course value, practice range facilities, staff, first tee and on-course customer service, food and beverage services, clubhouse appeal and pro shop facility.

Most recently, it renewed all 30 sand bunkers’ drainage and then filled them with pristine Arkansas white sand — part of the most extensive course renovation since it opened. Nature is the backdrop at Adams Pointe as protected wetland areas line the course along with stone lined ponds and native prairie grass roughs. Thanks to Superintendent Randy Shatzer, the course features immaculate Bentgrass fairways and greens. The challenging front nine is skillfully carved out of the forest and wetland areas with a creek running through all nine holes. The back nine features championship links-style golf with many elevation changes and ponds that come into play on five holes. Adams Pointe

is playable for any skill-level with four sets of tees ranging from 5,060 yards to 6,938 yards. Memorable holes 2, 6 and 8 are labeled the best by many area golfers. If the south wind is strong, the par-5 2nd hole can play an extremely long 525-yards (from the tips). No. 6, par-4, is a magnificent dog-leg-left that demands two well-placed shots for any possibility at par. No. 8 is a par 3 and could be the toughest par 3 in Kansas City. Regarded as a “premier place to play” in Kansas City, Adams Pointe is located at 1601 RD Mize Road south of I-70 off Adams Dairy Parkway, in Blue Springs, MO, 64014. For information, call 816.220.3673 or visit www. AdamsPointeGolfClub.com.

Adams Pointe Golf Club ►

dams Pointe Golf Club opened in the spring of 1998 and is owned by the city of Blue Springs, MO, and managed by Shane Gardner, PGA, of Orion Management Solutions. Adams Pointe has a reputation as one of the best public golf courses in the Kansas City metro area. Lead by Head Golf Professional Michael Strother, PGA and Assistant Golf Professional Andy Brown, the staff at Adams Pointe is among the friendliest you will find. Set in gently rolling hills with various elevation changes on several holes, it’s a true 18-hole championship golf course. Designed by noted architect, Don Sechrest, it has gone through many upgrades since its opening 20 years ago. 24

The Golf Club at Creekmoor ► The Golf Club at Creekmoor is a semi-private club (public welcome) that offers Bentgrass tee boxes and greens, and plush Zoysia fairways framed by 65 beautiful pure-white sand bunkers. This was the 21st course that Tom Clark of Ault Clark & Associates designed for Cooper Land Development. Clark says, “The site is tremendous with its rolling terrain, majestic hardwood trees and abundant views of a 125-acre lake.” Since its opening in 2007, Creekmoor is well-known as one of the best of KC area golf courses. Located on nearly 1,000 acres in Raymore, MO, Creekmoor’s championship golf course spans 7,406 yards from the back (Black) tee boxes making it among the longest courses in the Kansas City area. The Green tees (Blue at most courses) are 6,806, White’s are 6,151 and Red’s are 5,328 yards. The most memorable hole, at least for anyone with courage enough to play the course from the tips, is No. 9 — a downhill monster par 5 that stretches 663 yards, east Kansas City’s longest hole. Creekmoor features large greens that roll true and with the many subtle undulations that can challenge your nerves. Hole No. 5, a 537-yard par 5 has a severe two-level green, and the 548-yard par-5 13th hole has a challenging biarritz-type rolling green with a valley running across the middle. The entire course offers some of the best greens found within Missouri. Creekmoor Golf Club is located at 1112 East 163 Street, Raymore, MO 64083. For tee times, call the pro shop at 816.331.2621 or visit www.Creekmoor.com.

Fred Arbanas Golf Course ►

F

red Arbanas Golf Course opened in 1986 and was completely renovated in 2009 with new Bentgrass greens built to USGA recommendations skyrocketing the course to a Kansas City “5-Star Must Play” golf course. The 27-hole golf complex — an 18-hole championship course and a fabulous 9-hole executive course — is owned by Jackson County Parks and Recreation. It’s built around Longview Lake giving you a resort course feel while playing its Zoysia tees and plush fairways that lead to exceptional Bentgrass greens framed by river-sand bunkers. Notable course architect Craig Schreiner designed this Scottish links-style, championship course. It’s one of the KC metro area’s

Creekmoor’s pure white sand bunkers in contrast with its plush green Zoysia fairways and native grasses give the course a resort-like feel. Truly a remarkable golf course.

Fred Arbanas Golf Course boarders Longview Lake with many spectacular panoramic views as seen here at the par-4 12th green. “A gorgeous hole and fun to play,” said General Manager Bob McMillin. A Scottish links-style course it’s the perfect “Lake Golf Getaway” without leaving Kansas City. (photo by Alan Hoskins) busiest courses with 46,000-48,000 rounds a year, not including 18,000 rounds on its par 3 course, for good reason. With its lake views and the rolling terrain throughout the course layout, you truly get the feeling of playing a resort course. “The spectacular par-4 12th hole offers a panoramic view of Longview Lake behind the green, it’s just a gorgeous hole and fun to play,” said General Manager Bob McMillin. In addition to its 18 championship holes, there’s a first-class driving range/practice area and a historic clubhouse with full-service pro shop and snack bar. Superintendent Russell Bonneville and staff consistently do a fantastic job maintaining the golf course and securing its ranking as one of the very best golf complexes in Missouri. No need to make the three-hour drive south when you get the urge for a Lake Golf Getaway — Fred Arbanas Golf Course is a great option right here in Kansas City. Shoal Creek Golf Course ►

S

hoal Creek Golf Course was tagged “The Greatest Course in Kansas City” by Tee Times Golf Guide Magazine after its opening in 2001. Soon after, the course quickly became a highly ranked golf facility both within Kansas City and nationally. Owned by Kansas City Parks and Recreation and operated by KemperSports with General Manager Brett Plymell, PGA, heading the team, it’s superbly designed and consistently offers pristine conditions — a “Must Play” course. The course layout offers many amazing features, elevation changes and liberal landing areas, all of which amble through some of the most picturesque landscape found in the Kansas City area. Thanks to Superintendent Duane Sander and crew, Shoal Creek Golf Course features superbly manicured Zoysia tees and fairways framed by native prairie grasses and tree-lined terrain leading to large, undulating Bentgrass greens. Sander always has the course in fantastic shape.

Greens is continually working hard to make what is already one of the best golf experiences in the Kansas City area even better!”

Tiffany Greens par-5 1st hole sets the tone for your day at this beautiful course. Golfers are forced to decide — how good am I ? Do I lay up and start with a par or go for a green that’s surrounded by water?

One of the most memorable golf holes in all of Kansas City is the 17th at Shoal Creek. The 17th is a 198-yard (from the tips) par 3. From an elevated teeing ground, your downhill tee shot must carry over a deep ravine and rock wall fronting the green. A truly great signature hole. The 429-yard par-4 18th is another the signature-type hole and perhaps the toughest par 4 on the course. A superb finishing hole! Shoal Creek is unquestionably one of Missouri’s Best Golf Courses.

Stone Canyon’s 18-hole, 7,059-yard championship layout would challenge any tour player; however, with Norman’s signature design traits that include Bentgrass from tee to green, creative bunkering and landscape accents, it provides a truly memorable golf challenge for us mere mortals. Its dramatic layout and sporadic elevated tees traverse rolling fairways through rugged terrain with spectacular stone outcroppings integrated into the layout — hence the name Stone Canyon.

tone Canyon Golf Club opened for play in 2009 as the only Greg Norman Signature Design Course in the Midwest. It quickly received national accolades and retains its ranking as a Top Three Best Public Missouri Golf Course. New ownership acquired the course during 2014 with long-term plans taking the course and area residential development well into 2036. New owner Kevin Stallings, the residential builder surrounding the property, said, “I want Stone Canyon Golf Club to be known as the #1 Kansas City area destination for golf enthusiasts!” No doubt Stalling’s numerous investments to upgrades are paying dividends. Over the past three years superintendent Jacob Rockhold has whipped the course into one of Missouri’s very best, and making it more enjoyable to play by cutting back some native grasses and opening the course a bit. “More user-friendly,” says Stallings. “We want

Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., the par-72 layout played host to the Senior PGA Tour’s TD Waterhouse Championship from 1999 to 2002. While Tiffany Greens is challenging enough to host a tour event, it’s enjoyable for the everyday player. “It’s a true destination golf course,” said golf writer John Baccala. “It has a great course layout, great course conditions, and offers a resort-like atmosphere, amenities and firstclass customer service. The practice facilities are world-class.” Every hole at Tiffany Greens is exciting, scenic and challenging. “It’s hard for me to talk about just one or two,” said Baccala. “Maybe the best three-hole stretch in the Kansas City area is 16, 17 and 18. The par-5 16th, known as The Great Divide, is a hard dogleg-left that forces you to hit what might be a daunting second shot (if your drive is too far right) over a waste area to a bunker-protected, slippery-sloping green. The par-4 17th is a dogleg left that can be, depending on the wind, a risk/reward hole for long hitters. And finally, there’s a reason why the 18th is called The Wishbone. If you hit your drive too far right on this short, dogleg right par 4, you’ll wish you had a mulligan. Find the fairway and you still have a challenging uphill approach shot.” Amenities include a large driving range, a short-game area and two practice putting greens. The elegant clubhouse includes a full-service pro shop, large pub and grill area and tournament banquet room. For more about Tiffany Greens Golf Course, call 816.880.9600. interStone Golf Course opened in 2003 and was immediately tagged “A Touch of the Ozarks” by Bill Cromwell, Publisher of Tee Times Golf Guide Magazine. You don’t need to drive two hours south to enjoy the wonders of Ozark golf. layout features water hazards and beautiful views of the Lake. An 18-hole, par 72 with Bluegrass fairways and Bentgrass greens, it plays 6,663 yards from the back tees.

WinterStone’s par-4 3rd hole offers spectacular views from the tee to a green that’s guarded by a stone wall and creek. The sculpted mounding seen in this photo is found throughout the course framing all fairways and greens.

I think the first thing that hits you are the dramatic elevation changes, so much so that there are few holes in which you’re not either hitting uphill or downhill, which does two things — creates challenges and makes for spectacular views up, down and across the tree-lined fairways. There’s some pretty incredible Ozark-like views. Individually owned by Harlan Limpus and Co-owner Rick Boylan, this par-72, 18-hole course plays a long 6,752 yards from the championship tee boxes and 5,611 from the forward tees. Each nine has two par 3 holes, two par 5 holes and five par 4 holes. Thirty-two sand bunkers pepper the course with most near the greens. Thanks to Superintendent Bryan Gandy, GCSAA, WinterStone’s greens are superb and its immaculate contoured Zoysia fairways framed with sculpted mounding are picturesque and wonderful to play. The course has a covenant that does not allow the land for uses of anything but a golf course for 23 years, so there’s no houses lining the course. WinterStone should get more recognition nationally as an award-winning golf course — it certainly exceeds all the criteria. Its wonderful practice range includes Zoysia teeing grounds and target greens. Lead by General Manager Craig Palm and Head Golf Professional Golf Kane Chapman, customer services from the pro shop to the first tee, to on-course services, to food and beverage are first-class. This is a “Must Play” golf course. WinterStone Golf Course 816-257-5755. Located at: 17101 E. Kentucky Road (291 Hwy and Kentucky Road) Independence, MO. www.WinterStoneGolf.com.

ne of Kansas City’s most historic golf courses, Swope Memorial opened in 1909. The Kansas City Parks and Recreation commissioned A.W. Tillinghast to redesign the layout in 1934. The city of Kansas City owns the course located near the Kansas City Zoo —listen close for the roar of the lions and other wild animal sounds while golfing. Swope Memorial’s 18-hole, par 72 is 6,274 yards and short by comparison of today’s newer courses. However, by no means should you let that fool you! It’s a deceptive 6,274 yards of hilly terrain and quick undulated greens. Huge 100-year-old trees line every fairway. Green fees at Swope are very affordable. For more information call 816.513.8910. Located at 6900 Swope Memorial Drive, Kansas City, MO 64132 www.swopememorialgolfcourse.com. Watch for Eastern Kansas “Best Bucket List Courses” in the November issue. Meanwhile, get out and play as many of these Missouri’s “Best Bucket List Courses” as possible this fall. 

Fall Steps for a Super Spring Turf

W

ith fall just beginning, it’s hard to believe that fall (now) is the time superintendents plan turf prep so that the golfers will have the best playing conditions next spring. Great early spring playing conditions are hugely dependent on the important techniques and actions taken in the fall. Golfers can also use these ideas/tips to prepare their yards to look like a golf course come next spring.

by Michael Gardner

Eliminate Thatch Layer In addition to balanced nutrition, turf needs access to water. A key component in helping turf grass survive the winter is eliminating excess thatch and organic matter. We do this because water has trouble penetrating thatch layers, resulting in dry soils and limited root growth and microbial activity. Excessive thatch also holds moisture at the surface, which is a breeding ground for disease (and mold).

The consensus among turf grass specialists is the healthiest turf going into winter makes for the healthiest turf coming out of winter. Fighting against our best efforts is Mother Nature, with extreme temperatures, snow, wind, short days and long, cold nights. We have been talking about and working on turf health throughout the long, hot, dry summer. Now is the time to start a fall prep program, before turf goes dormant for winter. The following are a few of the things that our local superintendents do to prepare for going into winter. You could also prepare your yard the same way. • Balance nutrients. • Eliminate the thatch layer. • Maximize root systems. • Stimulate microbial diversity. • Eliminate and prevent fungus. Balanced Nutrition Balanced nutrition is important while turf and soil are still receptive. Balanced nutrition includes micronutrients in addition to the macronutrients: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Most turf grass specialists recommend avoiding high nitrogen going into winter as it can feed winter molds, such as snow mold. At Huma Gro® Turf, we like to start with the balanced nutrients in Turfplex® VII, which has a guaranteed analysis of 7-7-7 with 8 micronutrients.

30

TEE TIMES GOLF GUIDE

In addition, when we have a thatch layer over 1/4-inch thick, the crowns of the plants are exposed to the cold winter temperatures. Soils with less thatch keep those crowns deeper in the soil and protected from extreme temperatures. Fertil Humus® is a great way to decompose thatch and organic matter, resulting in a fertile and humus-rich soil. Surf-Max® is one of the few surfactants on the market that allows water to quickly penetrate the thatch layer. Maximize Root Systems Root systems are the anchor of our turf grass. The more extensive the root system, the better chance we have to achieve plant health. Huma Gro Turf’s Breakout® encourages a dense, fibrous root system through hormone stimulation and horizontal cell division. Stimulate Microbial Diversity Soil is its own complex ecosystem. The more diverse this ecosystem, the healthier the soil. This diversity must be focused on beneficial microbes, beneficial bacteria and fungi. When beneficial biology levels are high, pathogens are naturally

October 2018

suppressed. Huma Gro’s Turf Zap® feeds and stimulates this diverse population of beneficial organisms, achieving a proper, balanced soil biology. Fungicide All the work to achieve overall turf and soil health can go to waste if we fail to protect our course against winter fungus. Turf grass specialists recommend a healthy dose of fungicide going into winter. At Huma Gro Turf, we prefer to do this organically. Promax® is an OMRI-Listed organic fungicide that is effective against turf pathogens. Not only does Promax control turf grass disease but, unlike other harsh pesticides, it also builds soil health at the same time –– a win-win. Ultimately, healthy turf withstands the stresses of winter and the extremes of Mother Nature. These preventive steps help superintendents (and you) take a proactive approach to prepare for winter. A proactive fall program reduces or eliminates the need for reactive spring repair and recovery. When you see how great your local course looks next spring, be sure to tell your golf course superintendent how much you appreciate all their planning and hard work. Consult your local Huma Gro Turf representative TJ Blankenship of Green Partners USA at 816.519.6737 or email TJ@GreenPartnersUSA.com for specific recommendations. Huma Gro Turf products include Micro Carbon Technology® (MCT), a proprietary blend of very small organic molecules that allows for more effective absorption of nutrients by plants.  Michael Gardner is Senior Director of Huma Gro Turf Sales at Bio Huma Netics, Inc. Lake Ozarks Golf

Lake Valley Golf & Country Club’s

Unique Six par 3s, Six par 4s and Six par 5s. Editorial and photography by John Baccala

I

t is one of the oldest and most unique golf courses at the Lake of the Ozarks, so it is no wonder so many “Lake golfers” flock to Lake Valley Golf & Country Club, and despite the “Country Club” name, the course is open to public play. Located just off U.S. 54 Hwy, just outside Camdenton, MO, the turn to Lake Valley is directly across the highway from the turn to Old Kinderhook and offers a layout you won’t find anywhere else at the lake — six par 3s, six par 4s and six par 5s. “Lake Valley is a fun, challenging, yet forgiving golf course,” said Todd Nicklas, head PGA professional and general manager (photo on left). “The greens are in spectacular shape and so is the entire golf course.”

Right out of the chute is the par-5 1st hole, crossing a creek with an uphill approach to a green surrounded by four bunkers. The same creek comes into play on holes 2, 3 and 5. “While not actually on the Lake of the Ozarks, we do have a number of water hazards that come into play around the course,” Nicklas said. And the first hole — like most of the holes at Lake Valley — features a tree-lined fairway, putting a premium on accuracy off the tee. Fifty years in the books says a lot, whether it’s a family-run business or a golf course. And Nicklas is busily planning to guide Lake Valley through its next 50 years. “Fifty years shows Lake Valley is a mature, well-established course that has stood, and still stands the test of time,” he said. “We have thousands of people who have been coming to Lake Valley for years and make it their course of choice when they come to the Lake.” He is quick to compliment Brad Seidt, the new course superintendent, for having the course in “amazing” shape and looks forward to what lies ahead.

Nicklas has been the head professional and general manager for just two years, but he is no stranger to locals. He taught and coached golf and football for 12 years at Camdenton High School before coming to Lake Valley with golf stints in Jefferson City, Little Rock and Harrison, Arkansas and Sedalia Country Club along the way. The pristine par 72 layout plays nearly 6,400 yards from the tips and just over 6,000 from the white tees. It plays to a par 36 front and back totaling 72. Maybe the best piece of advice on how to play Lake Valley came from Assistant Pro Mick Jones. “Just remember the par 4s and par 5s play to uphill greens, the par 3s are downhill to the green,” he said. “And the elevation changes, even the subtle ones, are going to make the course play longer than you might think.” 36

The double dogleg par-4 12th with a blind downhill tee shot can challenge golfers off the tee. The hole plays a short 365 yards from the blue tees, so course management is advised

www.TeeTimesMagazine.com

The par-3 17th at Lake Valley plays downhill at 179 yards from the blue tees (157 white and 136 yellow) with a large lake behind the green — don’t go long! The view from the teeing ground shows the lay of the land — rolling hills and tree-lined fairways. One of the Lake’s most enjoyable courses to play. When you make the turn, get ready for the par-4 10th and the par4 12th — both challenging holes. Finding the fairway on 10 is a must and so is hitting enough club on the uphill approach. If not, you’ll catch the false front and make par a “true” accomplishment. The 12th is a double dogleg with a blind downhill tee shot. Again, remember —survive the par 4s, make your “hay” on the par 3s and par 5s.

“Immediate future plans include rebuilding and enlarging tee boxes and over-seeding the Bermuda fairways with Bluegrass, so our fairways will be green and thick all year long,” Nicklas said. You really must keep the ball in the beautiful, green fairway on the 4th hole. This long par 4 may be the hardest hole on the front nine. If you’re not in it (the fairway), you’re in it (i.e.: trouble). The elevated green is guarded by bunkers back-left and frontright. Nicklas said a par on this hole is a really good score. Surviving the par 4s at Lake Valley is key. Your “scoring opportunities” come on the par 5s and several of the par 3s. “Every one of the six par 5s are reachable for big hitters,” Nicklas said, “and four of the six par 3s play under 150 yards.” Those are your chances. And, he said, the par 3s have been known to give up an “ace” or two along the way.

Lake Valley’s final three holes may be one of, if not the most, picturesque trio of holes anywhere at the Lake of the Ozarks. It’s where Lake Valley’s lone “lake” comes into to play. “It surprisingly swallows up a lot of golf balls,” Nicklas said. Any tee shot left of the fairway on the par-5 16th finds it and so does anything long or left on the downhill par-3 17th. And, if you’re an occasional “Chunker,” (it’s OK to admit it) you might find it off the tee on the dogleg left par-4 18th. Nicklas calls the 17th his favorite hole. “I like the elevated tee shot to a narrow green,” he said. “It is a beautiful setting.” Beautiful and challenging — a great way to finish your round. “I think 16 and 18 are two of the hardest greens on the golf course to putt,” Nicklas said. “You have great chances to make birdie if you put the ball in the right place. Sixteen is a great par 5 and a well-placed tee shot on 18 sets up a fairly easy approach to a difficult green. “You must stay below the hole if you want any chance at birdie or even a par!” There is a very welcoming environment at Lake Valley — from staffers to locals. Several long-time Lake Valley golfers greeted our group, and some offered some pretty sage advice, “Putts aren’t going break as much as you think,” one fella told me. And he was right! It’s just another part of the plan as Nicklas navigates Lake Valley through the next 50 years — and beyond. “Our entire staff is here to make your experience a great one,” he said, “and our membership loves to the share the golf course with visitors.” Visitors who come to Lake Valley as visitors, leave feeling like welcome guests! Teetering Rocks — Spectacular Mirage of Fall Colors by Alan Hoskins

A 2013 conversion of a rather mundane 130-yard, par-3 8th hole into a dogleg par 4 increased par for the course to 36-30-66. While only 251 yards from the back and 220 from the front, the challenge is the tall oak trees that stand directly in the path of the tee box and the green. Quite wisely, a rock formation was added at the back of the green to guard against shots going over the green and down a steep embankment of thick bushes and undergrowth — a lost ball indeed!

T

he only par 66 golf course within the greater metro area, Teetering Rocks ranks as one of Kansas City’s most improved golf courses, and when the leaves turn each fall, certainly one of the most colorful.

Crammed with thousands upon thousands of every tree imaginable, the course offers a breathtaking mirage of red, orange, yellow and green made even more spectacular by the bluffs and rolling hills on the 137 acres on which Teetering Rocks sits at 12040 E. 86th, just off Highway 350 in Kansas City, MO. The tee box on the course’s most famous hole, the par 3, heart-shaped 3rd hole, sits on a bluff some 100 feet above the green and provides a fantastic panorama of the countryside stretching for miles, while views from the clubhouse and the tee box on No. 11 offer stunning panoramas in different directions. “It makes for a different golf course,” says General Manager Taylor Triggs. “We’re lucky we’re surrounded by all the trees. People really enjoy the change in colors. Half of the fun of living in Kansas City is the changes of the season. From the tee box on No. 3, you can see Unity Village and almost the whole town.” Zoysia fairways installed six years ago have matured and are outstanding while native grasses line many of the fairways. “Installing Zoysia fairways was the best decision we could have made,” says Triggs, “It provides plush lies and adapts much better to Kansas City temperatures.” Native grasses have been added on most of the par 4 and 5 holes. “They’ve really changed the scenery,” says Triggs. “They provide a great contrast and make it more difficult on a course that has no sand bunkers and few water hazards.” 38

TEE TIMES GOLF GUIDE

“It’s definitely a risk reward tee shot,” says Triggs. “Big hitters can take it up and over the trees, but if you go too far right or hook it — you’ve lost it. On the other hand, you can lay-up to a plateau to the left of the green and have a short pitch shot to the green.” At 4,439 yards from the blues, 4,033 from the whites and 3,654 from the reds and a par 66, Triggs bristles when Teetering Rocks is referred to as an executive course. “I often challenge my PGA buddies to come out here and shoot par,” he says. “Because of all the trees, there are several risk-reward holes.” The toughest is the par-5 6th hole, which becomes something of a double dogleg when played from the back tees. “You really have to thread your tee shot like a needle,” says Triggs. “You have to get it up and over trees to a sidehill lie, and then with the ball below your feet and trees on the right, the second shot is tough too, because you have to lay-up to where you have a good third shot to the green. It’s constantly the most double and triple bogeyed hole on the course.” Now in its 32nd year, Teetering Rocks is also unique in that it remains family owned. Built originally as a 9-hole course by the late Harold Vance, it is now owned by his son, Jeff, and Jeff’s wife, Connie. “When Harold built the course, he wanted people to play happy and leave happy and that’s never changed,” says Triggs. Teetering Rocks is a course that can be played in about three hours at some of the best rates in the metro area. In-season rates for 18-holes are $20 to walk and $29.50 with cart, and they offer 3-and 6-hole rates for those who want to get in a few quick holes. Rental clubs are available for those who want to give the game a test drive. The course and clubhouse are ideal for charitable and corporate events, wedding receptions, and special occasion parties. Frequent specials can be found on the course’s website at www.TeeteringRocks.com. For more information about tee times, events or clubhouse rentals, call 816.356.1111.

Kansas City Area Golf Options — a Chip Shot Away... Eagle Bend Golf Course

Plush Zoysia Fairways and Bald Eagles!

LAWRENCE, KS — Eagle Bend Golf Course opened 22 years ago and is located by Clinton Lake. Owned and operated by the city of Lawrence, it is NOT your typical municipal course. It is incredibly well-manicured and in excellent condition, making the course seem much more country club-like than “Muni.” Eagle Bend’s 18-hole championship golf course is open with no trees for the first six holes, while the remaining 12 holes are heavily wooded and sit near the Wakarusa River where occasionally, during fall and early spring, you’ll see bald eagles — hence the name of the course. A fair golf course for all abilities, it offers four sets of teeing grounds ranging from 7,052 yards from the tips (gold tees) to 6,542 yards from the blue tees, 5,989 White, 5,361 Green and 5,274 Red. A par 72 layout featuring Zoysia fairways, few bunkers and lots of native grass areas, especially on the first six “tree-free” holes. Green fees are affordable. For 18 holes with cart, prices range from $37 weekdays, $49 weekends, seniors are $31 and $33, juniors can play weekdays for just $22. The course features a 30,000-squarefoot short game practice facility. This facility lets you hit any shot around the green imaginable — from bunker shots to 100-foot putts to 30-foot pitch shots. Other amenities include, a driving range, practice putting and chipping greens, a full-service pro shop, club repair, clubfitting and snack bar. Eagle Bend Golf Course is located at 1250 East 902 Road, Lawrence, KS, 66047. For more information, call 785.748.0600 or visit https://lawrenceks.org/lprd/eaglebend.

Plattsburg Country Club

You’ll Use Every Club In The Bag

PLATTSBURG, MO — Plattsburg Country Club was originally designed in 1927 and was known as one of the elite private golf courses in northwest Missouri. Now a public golf course with new owners, who are on a mission to return it to elite status. Gary Ellington, the new managing partner and is one of six men who bought the club in September 2017. “We [the investors] were members and knew what a great course Plattsburg Country Club, had been and believed it could be again,” Ellington said. “We wanted to keep ownership local, thought the course was a great asset to the town and wanted to keep it an 18-hole golf course.” Since September of 2017, bridges and cart paths were repaired or replaced, tee boxes and greens were reseeded, new sand was added to existing bunkers, 36 irrigation heads were replaced, and more than 60 trees were cut down, so grass could grow where it never grew before. To date the new owners have invested nearly $100,000 — the results are really starting to show. Ellington says, “Our goal is to make it a fun course to play by providing a sufficient challenge, but fair to reward good play.” Plattsburg Country Club, a par 72 course, plays 6,250 yards from back tees and 5,836 yards from white tees. It’s a wonderful layout and very much a “shot maker’s” course with its many elevation changes and new challenges. It’s player friendly. You’ll use every club in the bag and still play 18 in 3-1/2 hours or less. The green fee with cart is only $27.50 every day of the week — very affordable! Plattsburg Country Club is located at 804 W Frost St., Plattsburg, MO 64477. For more information or tee times, call 816.539.3328 or visit www.PlattsburgCC.com.

Metcalf Ridge Golf Course Can You Tame Rabbit Creek?

LOUISBURG, KS — Metcalf Ridge Golf Course is located just south of Louisburg, KS. Built in the early 80’s by Panhandle Eastern Gas Company for use of its employees, it was originally named Rabbit Creek, later to become the Club of the Country and then Metcalf Ridge. The course plays at a testy 6,400 yards from the blue tees, 6,084 yards from the whites and 5,144 from the reds. With a wealth of large tree-lined fairways and dramatic elevation changes, it’s truly a golf jewel and well worth the 20-minute drive south from 151st Street in Overland Park, KS. Family-owned and operated, the course owners, David and Ann Welch, moved to Arizona and asked the Sauber’s if they would be interested in managing it. General Manager Andy Sauber is also course superintendent with wife, Patty as the clubhouse manager. In their third year of managing Metcalf Ridge, you won’t find a more affable couple who take on the course’s easy-going, down-toearth rural personality. The ever-present Rabbit Creek crosses squarely through the course. A wide creek, it must be navigated on a half-dozen holes. Metcalf Ridge is unique in that many of the greens are elevated from one to three feet. Very few greens allow you to run the ball on; most of the time you must chip the ball. Give it a shot, you’ll have fun! Green fees are only $45 with cart six days a week (see special offer on page 45 to save $30). The course is not open on Mondays, limiting Monday play to charitable tournaments. Metcalf Ridge is located at 6302 W. 295th Street, less than two miles south of Louisburg, KS. Champions Determined at The Midwest Premier Amateur Team Competition

T

he Heart of America Championship has been the Midwest premier amateur team competition since 1961. An annual four-ball match play competition is held in the Kansas City metro area and continues to draw the region’s best players. The 2018 Heart of America (HOA) Fourball Championship was contended in August at The National Golf Club of Kansas City and was one to remember. This year, 16 teams competed in a bracket-style match play format with eight qualifiers from the Kansas Golf Association (KGA) and eight from the Kansas City Golf Association (KCGA). How Do You Play Four Ball Golf? Four Ball is a style of team golf where four players are divided into a group of two teams with two players each. Play by one teammate can negate the less than sterling play of a partner. It’s considered strategic to pair an aggressive player with a consistent player. This strategy allows the aggressive player to take chances to score low, while the consistent player is there for the save should his partner’s aggression backfire. In four ball, a golfer can rely on the teammate to bail him/her out for a poor hole. The format is often used in team competitions, including the Presidents Cup, Solheim Cup and Ryder Cup. Each player plays his/her own ball. Assess all penalty strokes to the scores of each individual ball as if each player were playing strokeplay competition. The scores for each group of partners (the team) is compared at the end of a hole, the higher score for each team is discarded. For example (playing a par-4 hole): if Team “A” has a 4 and a 5, the 5 is thrown out. If Team “B” shoots a 3 and 5, the 5 is discarded. Team B wins the hole with a 3 to 4 score. Stroke-Play Competition: Add up the total scores of the best ball on each hole for each team to determine which team wins. Match-Play Competition: Add up the total number of holes in which each team outscored the other, disregarding the magnitude of the wins to determine which team wins. The Heart of America Championship field of 16 was cut down throughout Wednesday, August 8 as teams battled it out to get to the semi-finals on Thursday, August 9. The semi-final field was set with team KGA Josh Williams/Kit Grove versus David Rismiller/Jason Seeman and defending champions team KCGA Eliot Soyez/Jeff Bell versus Sam Parrot/Jeff Mason after two rounds of competition. Parrott/Mason (KCGA) got out to an early lead on Thursday morning over the defending champions after a birdie on their first hole. Their lead was extended to 2-up after a win on the par-4 3rd hole. Soyez/Bell (KCGA) wouldn’t go lightly — Bell birdied the par-4 7th, the deficit was cut to one. 40

The next six holes were halved, but after another birdie by Bell on 14, Mason/Parrott would see their lead diminish completely with the match all square heading into 15. Parrott put the team back in front with a birdie and kept the 1-up lead going into the par-5 18th hole. Soyez made a ten-footer for birdie — the match was all-square after 18 regulation holes, so it headed to extra holes. With a birdie on the 19th hole of competition, Bell/Soyez clinched a spot in the Heart of America Four-Ball finals. In the second semi-final round, Seeman/Rismiller (KGA) led their match over Grove/Williams (KGA) 3-up heading into the par-3 16th. With a par, Grove would decrease the deficit to 2-up with two holes to play. Grove birdied the last two holes of competition to miraculously make the match all-square after 18 holes — perhaps the biggest comeback in Heart of America history. The match lasted another six holes until Seeman/Rismiller both bogeyed the par-3 6th. Grove/Williams parred the 24th hole of competition to complete their own comeback and move on to the Heart of America Four-Ball finals against Soyez/Bell. Looking to defend their title, Soyez/Bell grabbed an early lead going 2-up heading into the par-4, 11th. With Williams’ birdie on the 11th, then a birdie from Grove on 12th, the match was unexpectedly all-square going in to the 13th. The match did a complete 180 when Williams again birdied the 13th and Grove followed suit with another birdie on the 14th and went 2-up after four consecutive birdies. Some poor tee shots from Williams/ Grove in the last few holes left the door open for Soyez/Bell who would capitalize and get back to all-square heading into the 18th. Both Williams and Soyez made clutch par putts on the 18th to send the HOA Finals into extra holes for the second time of the day — for both teams. Mother Nature was catching up after the third extra hole of the championship and darkness would only allow time for one final hole — the short par-4 13th. Standing on the 13th green in near darkness, Williams pitched onto the green to one-foot from the hole, for an easy par. Bell, ten-feet away and putting for par, would pull off his greatest putt of the day to extend the match. A scheduled two-day championship extended into its third day as a winner was still undecided. After 46 holes of competition for Williams/Grove and 41 for Soyez/Bell, both were required to return to The National on Friday, August 10 to finish their match and capture the Heart of America Champion trophy. Both teams teed off No.1 Friday morning at 7:45 a.m. for the 6th time in three days. With four pars on the 23rd hole of competition, both teams continued to the par-5 2nd. Bell/Soyez were both in

with pars, Grove found himself on the 2nd green with a putt at birdie and the win. Just 10-feet stood between Grove/Williams and their amazing story at the 2018 Heart of America Four-Ball Championship. Williams watched on the side of the green as his partner would make the 10-foot birdie to clinch the victory after a grueling comeback.

Flop Shots Made Easy — Fun to Pull Off!

F

Photo 1

lop shots can be extremely fun shots to hit, especially when you pull them off under pressure. Here are some very specific setup and swing components that can guarantee a successful flop. Setup is KEY! Having a proper setup (photo 1) will help eliminate chunks and blades when hitting the flop shot. This shot requires a forward ball position and loft on the clubface. I prefer to add loft to the face by having a slight shaft lean away from the target instead of opening the clubface (aiming the face to the right). In addition to the forward ball position and the open clubface, your chest should face the ball with the feeling of your lead shoulder closer to the ground than your trail shoulder. The shoulders are key to having a consistent low point! The Motion of the Swing There are two goals we want to accomplish during the motion of the swing: loft on the clubface throughout the entire swing and trying to get the clubhead to pass the hands through the shot. A good test to see if the clubface maintains loft through the shot would be to hold an object on the clubface (photo 2) throughout your swing. In other words, the clubface (photo 3) would be looking towards the sky throughout the entire swing.

In this setup photo, I have added loft to the clubface by having a slight shaft lean away from the target and the ball position is forward. My chest is facing the ball. Yes, golfing while pregnant is encouraged. Photo 2

To get a feeling of adding loft, try to hold an object on the clubface throughout your swing.

Once you’re able to keep the clubface open throughout the swing, start working to have your clubhead pass the hands before you make contact with the ball. The feel would be that you’re throwing the clubhead towards the ball on the downswing. Some people like to call that a flipping motion. Although we should not be using the flop shot that often during our rounds, it is still a fun shot to be able to pull off. Coach Courtney

Photo 3

Notice the clubface is looking towards the sky. Maintain this club angle throughout the entire swing.

What Are The Average Number of

Putts Per Round?

A

ccording to a 2017 study by Game Golf Live, a wearable real-time shot-tracking system, the average public golfer takes 34 putt strokes per round. At one point during 2017, Phil Mickelson lead the tour with 27.21 putts per round. Out of the top 100 in the category, the average was 29.1 putts. We typically use a driver 12 times — compared to an average of 34 (or more) putter stokes. For what it’s worth, the average golfer hits fairways 48.5 percent of the time, with the most misses landing to the right 28.5 percent of the time.

Superintendent Spencer Roberts of The National C.C. of KC with Ellie, his one-year-old Australian Shepard. Spencer says,“Ellie spends every day with him at the course learning about golf life.” Photography by Elisabeth Blair Photography www.elisabeth-blair.com. (See past 2018 issues for previous month’s Super Dog of The Month.)

According to Game Golf, including putts from the fringe, average golfers use the putter 41.3 percent of the time. Perhaps we should devote our practice time to the short-game area and putting green, and not so much time spent on the range pounding a driver that we only use (may be) 12 times. Or, like Robert Sneed (photo above), we could blame the green for missed putts — LOL! Just Say’n!  Clip & Save
