he pace of play topic will likely never leave the forefront of the golfing world. With the average Tour event rounds pushing 5+ hours to complete, one must wonder if amateurs are emulating what they see on TV. Amateurs should consider that there is a massive difference between recreational golf and pro golf. The fact is, pros are competing for their jobs and millions of dollars; the golf courses they play have thicker rough and much faster greens.

While recently watching the European Tour’s Shot Clock Masters (the Austrian Open) in Austria this past June, where the tournament used a shot clock for every shot over 72 holes of stroke play, I started thinking about how much time us mere mortals spend to execute a golf shot. At the Shot Clock Masters, each player had 40 seconds to hit a shot (50 seconds if he was first to play the approach chip or to putt). Players received a one-shot penalty for each time over the allotted seconds. An intense golf.com study named “On the Clock: Slow play study pits Joe’s vs. Pros” timed every shot (279 of them) of 45 tour pros over nine holes at Orlando’s Bay Hill during the second round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The clock started when a player had arrived at his ball, and it was his turn to hit. Cumulatively 1,497 shots were clocked. For the amateur data, 91 players were timed using the same guidelines over 581 shots in all. For both groups, tap-in putts were omitted from calculations. Of the shots timed at Bay Hill, 18.4 percent exceeded the TOUR’s 40-second time limit (Rule 6-7). Over nine holes, the player with the worst average, who frequently exceeded 40 seconds to play a shot including the percentage of the time he was in violation, was Kevin Na: 58% (18 of 31 shots). Least time per shot (avg.), Rickie Fowler (16 seconds). The PGA TOUR rules for pace of play includes a 40-second time limit, but also allows an extra 20 seconds for a total of 60 seconds under certain circumstances. The overall TOUR average for all shots is 38 seconds. The Amateurs’ data showed spending less time with each successive shot, which suggests that they lose focus or grow increasingly frustrated. The data variation suggested that amateurs don’t have a consistent pre-shot routine. The amateurs timed took an average of 4 hours and 58 minutes to complete their rounds. Learn from the pros, the first step toward building a consistent, repeatable swing is to have a consistent, repeatable routine, which doesn’t have to mean a slow routine. At the Shot Clock Masters nearly all the pros agreed that the 40-second shot rule should be implemented on the regular tour. Only a few players received a penalty stroke over the four-days of tournament play. After watching the tournament, our group tried to play a round under the same guidelines. One player really struggled to hit a shot within 40 seconds, but it was mostly due to his lack of focus and inability to quickly decide on the correct club for the yardage. It was fun to try playing within the 40-second shot clock — give it a try and see what your data shows. 6

The Best Golfer In Kansas City Revealed Spencer Wins Second Consecutive Watson Challenge by a Single Shot.

Argotsinger was just three shots back with two holes to go and Robert Russell (217) was 6-under early in the final round before three days in the high 90’s and climbing steep hills each day took its toll. A two-stroke leader after a sizzling 6-under 66 on Saturday, Spencer also found he could bounce back from adversity. Two-under par and cruising after seven holes in the final round, he wasn’t able to save par from a bunker on No. 8 for his first (and only) bogey and then hit his only bad shot of the day, a scorcher into trees on the right side of the fairway on No. 9 that could not be found. The subsequent double bogey dropped him a stroke back of fast-charging Tyler Docking at the turn. It would be his only stumble, thanks to an unerring putter when he needed it most — 3–5 footers that make or break a round. His biggest putt came on the par-3 176-yard 14th, a breaking 40-footer for the birdie that put him two shots in front. “My short putting was rock solid,” said Spencer. “I made a slight line adjustment and that helped. I made a 5-footer on 10 that was huge — got up and down on 12, and made all the other short putts except for No. 8.”

Meanwhile, the shortest hole on the course got Watson for the second time. On Friday, the day he shared the lead with a 5-under 67, Watson hit a 3-wood that hit a cart path and bounced deep into a wooded area (photo below) on the 285-yard par-4 14th. The

“I won it last year at Milburn, my home course, and I wanted to show I could win at other courses,” said Spencer. And win he did at hot and hilly Shadow Glen June 8-10. Turning back the challenges of a half-dozen pursuers, he became the first champion other than Tom Watson to win consecutive championships in the 12th annual Challenge benefiting the First Tee of Greater Kansas City. “They were different,” Spencer said of his two titles. “Last year, I was in a real comfort zone; this year, I had to grind it out.” In 2017, Spencer put together three sub-par rounds for a tournament record 12-under par 204 and won by seven shots. This year, Watson, Spencer and Tyler Docking were tied with six holes to go before Spencer broke away with a flawless finish, edging Watson by a single shot with an 8-under par 208. It was Watson’s fourth runner-up finish to go along with his five Challenge wins. shot went in but a few feet and almost couldn’t be found, but he followed with a marvelous chip shot out of a thicket to about 12 feet and escaped with his only bogey. “That was a heckuva shot; I could have hit it in the water,” said Watson. “I was very happy to make five.” Tied for the lead at 7-under Sunday heading into the 14th, Watson pulled his tee shot onto a sidehill lie, yanked a wedge shot and missed a big breaking putt for a bogey that knocked him out of a share of the lead. “The shortest hole on the course and it got me again. I should have just hit driver. Otherwise, I played well.

After parring the first hole, he strung together a sizzling five straight birdies on the way to a 32 and a one-shot lead after nine holes. “All of the putts were close,” Docking said of his birdie streak. “I was hitting my irons really well.” However, he three-putted from four feet at No. 7 to stop the streak and then fell out of contention on No. 13 when he hit a ball in the water and made double bogey. “He was hitting his irons stiff and then

He left almost immediately after the tournament to compete in the British Amateur, his first overseas venture. While a pro career may be in his future, “Not yet,” he says. Next year, the 13th Watson Challenge is scheduled to return to the Kansas City Country Club, the course where Watson learned the game of golf. It should be another great Challenge. 

I suggest that you use the method that we use at our shop to pick the best putter. Set up a course on the putting green and use one putter at a time — play “the course” on the putting green. After you finish your first rotation of putters, do it again with a different putter choice. By following this format, you will see which putter makes the most putts. Metcalf Ridge Kansas City area’s best kept golf secret? A dissecting ridge makes for dramatic golf shots on Louisburg, KS, course. Words and Photography by Alan Hoskins

he greater Kansas City area’s best kept golf secret? If Metcalf Ridge isn’t No. 1, it’s certainly in the conversation.

Boasting one of the most intimidating and memorable signature golf holes you’ll ever play, Metcalf Ridge Golf Course is located just south of Louisburg, KS. If you’re like many and haven’t heard of it, it’s only new in name. Built in the early 80’s by Panhandle Eastern Gas Company for use of its employees, it was originally named Rabbit Creek, later to become the Club of the Country and then Metcalf Ridge.

“The best way to play the hole is to land short of the green,” says Sauber. “If you land on the green the ball will probably roll off. And it’s a tough green on which to putt.” “It’s a challenge for just about any golfer; it’s tough to hit and stick,” says Sauber’s wife, Patty, the clubhouse manager. “The women play it as a par 5.” While the best remembered, the 9th hole is just one of five in which the ridge comes prominently into play. On both of the par 5 holes on the front side, the 525-yard No. 2 and 533-yard No, 4, the tee box hovers 50 feet above the fairway, offering spectacular

tee shots that seem to hang in the air for an eternity. Same for the 448-yard 10th hole, except that instead of a spacious landing area, the tee shot is much more confining with trees on both sides of the fairway and Rabbit Creek 150 yards off the tee. On the 390-yard No. 15, however, it’s back up the ridge — a good 200 yards to reach the top — with a long downhill second shot to a small green fronting a large lake and offering a picturesque view of the clubhouse. An especially demanding hole to walk, Sauber has installed benches for walkers to get a second breath.

The course gets its name from its closeness to Metcalf Avenue, a popular street running through Overland Park, KS, and a steep ridge that dissects and defines the course. It plays at a testy 6,400 yards from the blue tees, 6,084 yards from the whites and 5,144 from the reds. With a wealth of large tree-lined fairways and dramatic elevation changes, it’s truly a golf jewel and well worth the 20-minute drive from 151st Street in Overland Park. About that signature 9th hole. It’s a par 4 played at 390 yards from the back tees and 371 yards from the more playable white tees to a green that, according to general manager and golf superintendent Andy Sauber, soars 50 feet above the fairway (it looks even higher and so steep golfers are advised not to drive down the cart path for fear of a rollover). Adding to the challenge, Rabbit Creek crosses at the end of the fairway and there’s a green that’s difficult to hold. 14

Ever present too is Rabbit Creek, which crosses squarely through the course. A wide creek, it must be navigated on a half-dozen holes — Nos. 2, 3, 4, 9, 10 and 15. There’s also blind shots on Nos. 4, 6, 11 and 15. Other notable tests come at the 429-yard No. 7; a risk reward hole where one can cut the corner if willing to face a second shot from the rough. The 420-yard No. 8 where a well-placed tee shot is advised because of big bodies of water on both sides of the fairway. The par 4s Nos. 16 and 18 run alongside the course’s largest lake. Except for the 140-yard 12th hole, each of the other five par 3 holes stretch from 170 to 195 yards with the 185-yard 14th the most challenging because of two large bunkers fronting the green.

Metcalf Ridge

Both grew up in Ellinwood, a Kansas, town of 2,500 that’s 10 miles east of Great Bend. While they knew each other in school, they didn’t begin dating until college — Andy at Kansas State and Patty at Oklahoma Christian. They have three grown children and seven grandchildren with an eighth on the way. For 35 years, Andy worked as a 401K account manager for a third-party accounting firm in Overland Park and Lee’s Summit, MO. Patty was the registrar at Louisburg High School for 26 years. Both were avid golfers and members at Metcalf Ridge for about 10 years when the course owners, David and Ann Welch, moved to Arizona and

2002, it was purchased and renamed Metcalf Ridge by a limited partnership headed by the Welchs, whose two sons graduated from Louisburg High School before they moved to Arizona.

Unique to Metcalf Ridge are many “push-up” greens that were the construction style when the course was built. The green on 420-yard 8th hole is elevated 2-4 feet above fairway and putts a premium on good chip shots. Metcalf Ridge is also unique in that many of the greens are elevated from one to three feet. “Very few greens allow you run the ball on; most of the time you have to chip the ball,” says Patty.

Andy and Patty Sauber are in their third year of managing Metcalf Ridge, and you won’t find a more affable couple who take on the course’s easy-going, down-to-earth rural personality. “People make choices; we want them to choose us,” says Patty.

Panhandle Eastern built the first nine holes of the course in 1981-82 and then added the second nine in 1987. The course was named Rabbit Creek at that time. It was sold in the mid-90’s to Jerry Simmons who developed many of the homes adjacent to the course. In

Midwest Section PGA Foundation Pro Am Tee’s Off This Fall Benefiting Folds of Honor and PGA HOPE

olf is more than just a sport. It is also an incredible vehicle through which the values of respect, integrity and sportsmanship are taught. Further, the sport of golf remains the leading avenue for charitable giving. According to www.wearegolf. org, the game of golf has led to $3.9 billion per year in terms of charitable giving contributions benefiting youth, education, environmental and cultural groups at all levels — nationally, regionally and locally. The Midwest Section PGA is no exception to this statistic. According to Major Ed Pulido, U.S. Army (Ret.) and senior vp and co-founding member of the Folds of Honor Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides educational scholarships to the children and spouses of our fallen and disabled service members while serving our nation, the Midwest Section PGA was the first in the country to jump on board, ultimately creating something powerful for Folds of Honor. “The Section wanted its members involved and to make an impact,” emphasized Major Pulido. “It was important to the members to understand how they can honor others through the game of golf, and everyone has stepped up to the plate in that regard.” The Kansas City Chapter of Folds of Honor, presided over by Larry Pfeiffer, understands what it means to continue to invest in our military families. “The Kansas City Folds of Honor Chapter was started in the fall of 2011,” noted Pfeiffer. “It was the first chapter location outside of the headquarters in Oklahoma and has been used as the model for the current 15 other chapters across the country. The local chapter provides ‘Boots on the Ground’ and a continuity of communication with individuals interested in supporting our military members by ‘Honoring their Service’ through ‘Educating their Legacies.’” On October 8, the Midwest Section PGA and the Midwest Section PGA Foundation 16

Pro Am/Footprints in Fairways will once again step up to the plate by hosting the 11th annual Foundation Pro-Am at Loch Lloyd Country Club to benefit Folds of Honor and PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere). Unique to this event is the number 13, which represents the number of folds in the United States flag. The 27-hole event will start at 9:13 a.m. and will encompass a nine-hole scramble, which must be played in one hour and 13 minutes, followed by a nine-hole Shamble and a nine-hole count two Best Balls. Four amateur players will be paired with a PGA professional. All participants will receive an exciting array of gifts valued at approximately $250, which includes puffer jackets, ball caps and golf balls. Food and beverage, team awards, a games package and an exciting raffle will also highlight the event. The registration fee is $1,300 per team and is limited to 33 teams. This year’s event will result in the donation of 13 scholarships for Folds of Honor, totaling $65,000. The Section also hopes to raise an additional $35,000 to benefit PGA HOPE. One of this year’s scholarship recipients, Kelli Campbell, whose husband was killed in the line of duty, is slated to speak, sharing her story. Other potential speakers include Major Pulido and Major Dan Rooney, a PGA professional and the founder of the Folds of Honor Foundation. Major Rooney believed the PGA of America and its members would be ideal partners with the Foundation to communicate the mission of the Foundation. “Major Rooney worked with Brian Whitcomb, President of the PGA of America, to establish Patriot Golf Day over the Labor Day weekend,” stated Pfeiffer. “That partnership has resulted in not only Patriot Golf Day on that weekend, but also at special events throughout the year. To date, the Kansas City Chapter has raised over $1.5 million dollars through activities with the PGA of America.” An outstanding leader in the nation with respect to charitable giving, the Midwest Section members continually lead with

hearts of service towards these endeavors. “What we are seeing in Kansas City and in the Section is a true effort of what we want to build, which is to take care of families not just with money, but with the necessary support and resources to help make things easier for them. These families are important, and we must continue to tell their stories so that we can remember their loved ones,” reflected Major Pulido. It is no surprise the Midwest Section continually leads the nation in the number of participants at this event. “This has always been a successful Pro-Am, and we think this year’s event will be a home run,” said Brad Demo, PGA Executive Director of the Midwest Section and founding Board Member of the Kansas City Chapter. “We are truly blessed to have some incredible sponsors, and we especially want to thank our extended family and our sales reps who, for the past decade, have supported the Section and the Foundation.” Pfeiffer is equally grateful for the commitment of Demo and the Section members for honoring military members and their families, working tirelessly to raise funds for these military programs. "Brad has been a solid contributor to the Board since the inception of the Kansas City Chapter,” noted Pfeiffer. “He continues to take an active role and provide new ideas that are not only utilized in Kansas City, but also across the nation in other chapters." Struggling With Clean Contact?

Improve Your Takeaway for More Consistency

oe Norman believed the takeaway was so crucial in the golf swing that he would begin his swing with the clubhead two feet behind the ball. Most amateurs tend to follow the same path back down to the ball of their takeaway. Professionals such as Ryan Moore and Jim Furyk are exceptions to this rule. Both take the club extremely outside of their hands and have engraved the ability to reroute it back on plane during their transition. Although you do need to be on plane with your takeaway, it sets the tone for the rest of the swing. For most golfers, having a takeaway that is on plane will help with direction and overall ball-striking consistency.

Proper Takeaway: To get your club started back correctly, I want you to imagine an 8-10-inch-wide track extending away from your hands. Your goal is to move your hands down this track. What this does is, it makes your shoulders rotate and will keep the club outside of your hands during the takeaway. Photo 3 Notice in photo #3, when the clubhead rises to the halfway point, the clubhead is slightly outside of my hands. Personally, this is a preference in my golf swing. Some players are more comfortable having the clubhead in-line with their hands at the halfway position. Either position or anywhere in between is acceptable.

In photo #1, notice that my wrists have flipped the club to the inside, my hands have come away from my body and my forearms have over rotated causing an open-clubface. From here, I will need to either reroute the club over the top or I’ll keep the club to the inside in my transition. An inside takeaway causes the dreaded two-way miss. Remember, whatever you do, the grip end of the club will have the opposite effect on the other end of the club. Photo 2

For those who have figured out that their takeaway is too much inside, you’ll tend to over compensate by pushing the club to the outside with your hands. Notice in photo #2, along with my hands, that my arms have separated from my body. Typically, this will cause you to swing steep in your downswing. This can result in a fat shot with your irons or will cause you to put a sky-mark on the top of your driver.

Practice Drill: A good drill (photo #4) to practice a proper takeaway is to take an empty range ball basket and place it outside of your right foot as shown. If you take the club away properly, the Photo 4 clubhead will stay outside of the range basket until it rises to the half-way position. If you break-down during your takeaway, you will contact the range basket. The first 2-3 feet of your swing sets the tone for the rest of your swing. If you can achieve a better club position halfway back, you will have a far better chance of controlling the direction of your golf ball and add some distance to your shots as well. Good luck with these tips, and try to practice these drills before your next round.  Editor’s Note: If you don’t know who Moe Norman is, Google him! He is a fascinating person/golf fanatic who invented his own golf swing and way to play. He called it “Natural Golf.” He believed in a simple golf swing — back and through, with very minimal motion in body movement. There are hundreds of his videos on YouTube.

Jeff McKee’s 45-hole complex is truly family affair in Pleasant Hill, MO.

n 1991, a young Jeff McKee took a piece out of the very foundation of which America was built to fulfill a childhood dream. He built himself a golf course, and then another. And a third, all the while surrounding himself with family, friends and loyal employees. Today, 27 years later, Country Creek continues to stand as a symbol of what is truly Americana, feel-good pages of nostalgia lifted right out of Reader’s Digest, Chicken Soup and Norman Rockwell.

Al Graham has managed the Rock and Quarry pro shop for 25 years; Bob Drury has been at Hoot’s Hollow 15 years. Sandy King is in her second gig in the snack bar, serving up the best hamburgers you’ll find anywhere.

Anyway, you get the idea. Country Creek is truly a family affair and lacks only in location of being a player in the Kansas City golf market. The complex is located about 15 miles south of Lee’s Summit, MO, just east of Highway 291 at 20800 E. 215th Street on State Route P in Pleasant Hill, MO.

Inspired by his late father. McKee designed and built Kansas City’s only 54-hole golf complex. While it has been reduced to 45 holes, the support of family, friends and longtime employees have made Country Creek truly unique and special in an era of courses dominated by big management businesses. McKee’s wife, Missy, and sister, Jane Hayden, take care of the books and payroll. His mother, June, now 84, worked for years in the snack bar. Daughter Emily and son Ean, both athletes and graduates of Pleasant Hill High School, share 24

The oldest of the three courses, The Rock was opened in 1991. The Quarry followed in 1997 and Hoot’s Hollow was opened about a mile west of the main complex in July of 2002. The Quarry has since been reduced to nine holes with the 2016 sale of the front nine, which was located across the road from the clubhouse. “A good part to sell, we didn’t need to have golfers crossing the highway,” says McKee, now 60. “Probably have too many holes anyway.” The Cadillac of the three courses, Hoot’s Hollow is named after McKee’s father, Gilbert (Hoot) McKee, who passed away in 1998 after playing a major role in the construction of the first two courses. “We sold our family rock quarry business in 1990, and my dad asked me what I wanted to do,” says McKee. “I was only 32 at the time

Dad said, ‘Okay, I’ll help you.’ We were farmers, so we had earthmoving equipment and knew a little bit about moving dirt. “Once I started, I just couldn’t stop. My dad found out how to run a bulldozer, and I couldn’t get him stopped. The golf economy was a lot better in the ‘90’s. We did the construction on all of the courses. The last course, we did everything, including putting in all the water irrigation lines. We knew a lot more about building greens — on the Hoot’s course, they’re a lot more undulated than the other two. Everything was booming, interest-wise with Tiger Woods and price-wise. That’s how we ended up with three courses.”

Waterfalls divide the 9th and 18th fairways before merging at a huge double green. Escaping a Fairway Bunker with Ease by Courtney Mahon, LPGA

o fairway bunkers equate to large numbers on your scorecard? How comfortable are you with shots from the fairway? Do they also equate to large numbers? Surprisingly, these two shots are more similar than you think.

The most common miss in the fairway bunker is what golfers call a “fat” shot, which causes the ball to either stay in the bunker or end up tremendously short of the intended target. To hit better fairway bunker shots, we must learn how to strike the ball first and the sand second.

There really is nothing special about a fairway bunker shot other than the tips mentioned. In reality, it is the same as a shot in the fairway. Both shots require us to strike the ball first and take a divot second. In golf, this is called controlling the low point of your swing. The low point on all iron shots from the fairway or fairway bunkers should be in front of the ball about an inch or two. Unlike the driver that has a low point that is behind the ball because we should be hitting upwards on a driver to create proper trajectory and carry distance. To hit better fairway bunker shots, we must strike the ball first and the sand second like you would during a fairway (grass) shot.

Here are my top three tips to ensure focus so you hit the ball first: In this photo, I’m in a fairway bunker. I have my weight on my front foot and keep it there throughout the swing. I’m also trying to keep my body centered throughout the shot with no weight shift and keeping my head centered.

1. Make sure you have your weight on your forward foot and keep it there throughout the swing. 2. Stay centered throughout your shot! This means (during this shot), you don’t have to shift your weight to the back foot. You also want your head to stay centered — no movement. 3. Swing normal, just as you would from a fairway shot — with the same confidence! 28

y o u golf, understanding that turf recovery and repair is one of the most important aspects of your local golf course — particularly during the heat of summer. Golf course maintenance professionals spend a large portion of their time struggling to give you the green turf you prefer this time of year. The greens are our “Promised Land,” but the golf course isn’t always a “Land of Milk and Honey.” Sometimes turf is a land of stress, and I’m not talking about having an off day. I’m talking about the world of hurt we (golfers) put on the turf. Then, there is stresses from regular mowing, verticutting, aerating, rolling of greens, and the high volumes of fertilizers, pesticides and water that all create great playing conditions for us, but unfortunately, wreak havoc on turf. The most common stresses put on turf is rigorous greens mowing. Not only does mowing itself stress turf, but the low — very low — cutting height that keeps grass at maximum playability is harmful to turf health. We all love quick greens and rolling can give turf a break from mowing. But, firming the green can also compact it. Rolling turf already stressed from heavy play, heat, disease, low-mowing heights and over-watering is simply piling on more stress. Did you know that applying too much water under extreme heat can create the perfect playground for fungus? Over-watering not only wastes water, but can form a crust that blocks water, nutrients, air, and so on. Recover From Trouble...

’m sure many of you, as I, have been in trouble off of the tee finding yourself under the trees. When you do, then here are a few good fundamentals to recover with a minimal number of strokes.

When you find yourself under the trees, remember, you don’t want to compound an error with another error. Most of the time, you will have over-hanging limbs to contend with that force you to play a low shot to get out of trouble. Your goal is to accept your situation and just get the ball back into play to give yourself a fair shot at the green. Depending on how far you want to hit the shot, it can be played with a variety of clubs. In the photos below I have selected a low-loft 5-iron. The reason I select a 5-iron is that it is easier for me to keep the ball low under the tree limbs and move it in the desired direction. The less lofted club you use, the easier it is to move the ball low below tree limbs and left or right, so leave the wedge or 9-iron in the bag. The set up for this shot is very easy to remember. 1. Play the ball slightly back in your stance favoring your weight on the left-side (Right-hand golfers) and make sure your hands are set ahead of the ball. The reason for this is so your hands get past the ball first on the downswing, cause you to hit the ball lower. 2. If you have the ball position to far forward, you will release the club too early, which will increase the loft of the club and make the ball go higher. This could lead to more tree trouble. 3. When playing this shot, remember you are only trying to get the ball back in play — a full swing is not needed.

The Golf Club at Deer Chase Beloved GM Retires — New GM Takes the Helm

hange. Some say change is bad, some say change is good, but most realize change is inevitable. Big changes are well underway at the Lake of the Ozarks’ The Golf Club at Deer Chase, and given what I saw Memorial Day weekend, golfers are going to like them!

Change began when Spencer Wilson (photo above) became the new general manager of Deer Chase. Wilson may be new to the par-71 layout, but he is not new to Lake of the Ozarks golf. He began as the assistant pro at The Lodge of the Four Seasons six years ago, took an assistant professional position at Tan-Tar-A and became the head pro there in 2015 before coming to Deer Chase earlier this year. He replaces long-time beloved former GM Marv 36

Boegler, who was forced into retirement due to health challenges. Wilson knows, there is really no replacing Marv. “Marv laid a great foundation,” Wilson said. “We have a very loyal following among locals and visitors alike because of him. Many large groups come back and play Deer Chase every year because it’s a great golf experience and that’s thanks to Marv.” Wilson plans to keep those golfers coming back and offering membership rates he said “can’t be beat” anywhere at the lake —10 months (March 1– December 31), seven days a week including cart for $1,000 (single) or $1,500 couple (pro-rated available for rest of 2018). Deer Chase sits midway between Osage Beach and Camdenton, off U.S. 54 Hwy and MO Hwy A in the Auglaize River valley. While the course sits nowhere near the lake, it is carved out of beautiful Ozarks countryside. Wilson refers to Deer Chase as public golf in a private setting. “Deer Chase is the most scenic golf destination at the lake,” he said. “There are no houses, no boats, no traffic — just you and nature. “If golf is your escape, there’s no better place to escape than Deer Chase!” With four sets of tees and playing just over 6,500 yards from the back tees and just under 6,200 yards from the middle tees, The Golf Club at Deer Chase is golfer friendly, yet very challenging thanks in large part to the small, undulated greens. “Simply hitting the green here never guarantees a par,” Wilson said. “If you can

go an entire round without three-putting, that’s a victory in itself. “We should probably have a ‘I never three-putted’ board in the clubhouse.” he joked. And, because of the manageable yardage, hitting driver off the tee may be tempting, but isn’t always the most prudent play. “Deer Chase requires you to hit a variety of clubs off the tee box and forces you to make some tough decisions,” Wilson said. “There are many tempting spots to be aggressive, but if you miss, you’ll pay the price.” The hilly Ozarks terrain produces frequent elevation changes and adds to the challenge and enjoyment. Several holes feature elevated tee boxes, especially on the back nine. Elevation changes really come into play during a three hole stretch from 14 through 16. The 14th is a short, downhill par 3 where “long” is “gone,” followed by an extreme downhill tee shot on par-5 15th, then back uphill — almost 30-yards uphill to the green. Then, the nearly 30-yard downhill par-3 16th are tough holes. If you don’t hit good shots here, your scorecard will look as “up and down” as the three holes you just played. There are flat spots at The Golf Club at Deer Chase too, and those holes, specifically holes 1 through 5 and the par-5 10th, are Wilson’s favorites. “While the rest of the course offers breathtaking elevation

changes, those six holes sit in the Auglaize River Valley, and there’s just something about being surrounded by hills and trees that make you feel like you’re off the grid and in your own world,” he said.

Brett is clearly a Seinfeld fan. His super dogs are named after Seinfeld actors Jerry (red collar) and Elaine (blue collar). They play together constantly. Maybe, the next pup will be named Kramer! Jerry sits on the golf cart seat with Brett and will give up his seat for No One! Elaine chases behind and will swim in any body of water available. Course Superintendent Brett Dulworth and his trusty assistants Jerry and Elaine (photo above) has Deer Chase in excellent shape, and Wilson plans more improvements throughout the summer and fall. Changes are well underway — changes he believes will elevate Deer Chase to the top of the “must play” Lake of the Ozarks golf list. But, one thing won’t change — the course and staff’s dedication to customer service.

“Throughout my career, every job I’ve had has revolved around customer service, and at a location like Deer Chase, it is particularly important,” he said. “It’s our goal to provide every guest with a fun, positive experience.

The sign has nothing to do with the golf course itself. The owner of the property wanted this sign to be placed at the corner of Lowell Williams and A-road. No consideration was given to the

Golf Course Supers Work To Balance The Environment, Wildlife and Community by Jacob Rockhold, Superintendent

ecently, Stone Canyon Golf Club was recognized for its environmental sustainability by the Audubon International Sanctuary. Audubon International is an organization that helps golf courses implement plans and practices that are beneficial to the environment, wildlife and community. This organization has a process golf courses can go through to become a Certified Sanctuary. Currently there are over 800 golf courses around the world that are participating in this program. Certification is difficult to obtain and difficult to maintain. Many requirements and changes must be implemented to become recognized by Audubon International. There are many steps to take to become a certified sanctuary. Steps include environmental planning, wildlife and habitat management, chemical use reduction, water conservation, water quality management, and outreach and education to the community. All the steps involved to become certified are geared toward protecting the wildlife and environment near and around the golf course, as well involving the community through education and participation. Stone Canyon is a unique property because it was previously utilized as a landfill, and there are many environmental issues associated with former landfills. . My goal when I started at Stone Canyon in 2015 was to do as much as I could to build a reputation as not only one of the best golf courses in Missouri but also create an environmentally friendly golf course. For me, there is no better way to achieve a great environmental footprint than to be involved with an organization like Audubon International.

That number continues to grow as this year’s bluebirds are about to leave the nest. We have also added a few native areas that are out of play. This helps provide food and habitat for deer, turkey, rabbits and many more creatures. We’ve worked to eliminate noxious weeds that overtake all native areas, and we’ve established over two acres of milkweed areas that allow the Monarch butterfly population to flourish. During 2016, we planted/ seeded many wildflower areas that provide food for pollinators such as the honey bee. In fact, in 2017, we established a new honey bee hive — the colony continues to flourish. A colony could reach up to 80,000 individuals during the active season when workers forage for food, store honey for winter and build combs. However, this population will decrease dramatically during colder seasons. We must have bees flourishing or we are all in deep dodo! Many more plans are being implemented at our course to reduce our environmental footprint and help the local area become more natural and beautiful. In many ways, golf courses that are not associated with Audubon International still do their best to be environmentally friendly and sustainable. At Stone Canyon, we find that our cooperation with the Audubon International helps us maximize our goal to be environmentally friendly. It’s an honor to be recognized by such an important organization.

At Stone Canyon, we work closely with the State of Missouri Waste Management Department and EPA to insure the safety of the community and environment surrounding Stone Canyon. Now being involved with the Audubon International Sanctuary Program, we as a team are trying to maintain the property in a way that is best for wildlife and the environment while further protecting the aesthetics and safety of the community.

At Stone Canyon, our team has worked for several years to become recognized by Audubon International. We added nearly 30 bluebird houses around the course, and in just 3 years, we’ve hatched well over 50 bluebird fledglings from those bird houses.

SPRING HILL, KS — Sycamore Ridge Golf Course opened in 2000 and has earned numerous national magazine accolades since. If you haven’t played it recently, you’re in for a pleasant surprise.

KANSAS CITY, MO — Well, if you can’t tame the Green Monster (an iconic figure head), maybe you can par the heart at Teetering Rocks Golf Course. Best known as the course with the heart-shaped hole, the Raytown area course has Zoysia grass fairways on all the par 4s and the 9th and 18th holes. “The new grass has been amazing,” says general manager Taylor Triggs. “It has taken hold extremely well.”

Crystal White Sand — Resort-Like Feel

During 2015, the highly-ranked 18-hole championship course underwent extensive improvements under the management of Orion Management Solutions, Inc. All bunkers were re-constructed, re-lined and filled with imported crystal white sand, offering a resort-like feel. New wider cart paths were added throughout the entire course along with new driving range equipment, and the clubhouse and cart barn were given a fresh new look. Some tees were removed to widen the fairway landing areas and flattened out to make the course more player-friendly. “We’ve also re-designed a few of the hole layouts and stripped the Zoysia collars replacing them with Bentgrass and improved the fescue rough to give the course a more private club feel,” says General Manager Ben Perry. Sycamore Ridge offers superb Bentgrass fairways and greens. Bentgrass fairways are the first to turn lush green in spring and remain green through fall. The course is well-known for its two unique nine-hole layouts. The front nine offers an Ozarks feel with tree-line hilly terrain, while the back nine holes is a links-style course with gentle rolling fairways. The course features five tee boxes ranging from 4,539 to 7,081 yards with a 75.0 course rating and 141 slope from the tips. While it is a challenging course, it is player-friendly and fun to play. New ownership took over the course during 2014 with long-term plans taking the course and area residential development well into 2036. At the time, new owner Kevin Stallings, the residential builder surrounding the property, said, “I want Stone Canyon Golf Club to be known as the #1 Kansas City area destination for golf enthusiasts!” Since that time, Stallings implemented numerous upgrades to the course and its level of services. This year, a new fleet of Precedent i2 Club Cars with USB ports were delivered and a new cart barn was constructed to store them. Over the past three years superintendent Jacob Rockhold has worked to make the course more enjoyable to play by cutting back some native grasses and opening the course a bit — “More user-friendly,” says Stallings. “We want golfers to have fun and enjoy what Greg Norman has designed on this property.” Stone Canyon's 18-hole, 7,059-yard championship layout provides a truly memorable golf challenge with Norman’s signature design traits that include Bentgrass from tee to green, creative bunkering and landscape accents. Propeck Crowned KC Girls Junior Champion

he Kansas City Golf Association (KCGA) competitive field of junior golfers continues to illustrate how much great golf talent there is within the Kansas City area. This year’s Kansas City Junior Championship was held at Brookridge Golf and Fitness May 30-31. No less than 89 of the area’s top junior talent took a shot at the KC Junior title and a chance to play in the Watson Challenge or the Prairie Invitational. In the girls division, 29 girls vied for the top spot. Over the course of the two-day competition, Megan Propeck (photo on left) distinguished herself atop the leaderboard. Propeck shot a first round score of 69 (-2) and lead the field by 7 strokes despite carding two bogeys, she came back with four birdies and was in good position to defend her 2017 KC Junior Champion title. Despite a big lead, Propeck had a few mistakes in her second round with a handful of bogeys on the day. She battled back with two birdies to card 75 (+4). Her great play secured her the 2018 KC Junior Girls Champion title by an amazing 9 strokes with a 144 (+2), overall score. Molly Saporito secured second place shooting a 79, 74 (153). Julia Misemer rounded out the top three with a 76, 81 (157). With her win, Propeck secured an invitation to the Prairie Invitational on July 23-25 at Indian Hills Country Club. The Prairie Invitational tournament is designed to determine the best female golfer in the Midwest. Propeck will add to the great field of golfers. The Boy’s KC Junior Championship Division In the boys’ division, 60 players battled for medalist and an invitation to play in the Watson Challenge on June 8-10 at Shadow Glen Golf Course. Competition was tight throughout the two-day competition. Some notable names in the field included Michael Winslow, Garrett Clark, defending champion Ryan Bender, Will Harding and many more. After round one, Justin Wingerter earned the leader spot after shooting a bogey-free round of 69, (-2), by two strokes over Daniel Gutgesell. Wingerter’s two birdies came on the par-3, 5th and the par-5, 9th. On the final day of competition, the leading group included Justin Wingerter (69), Daniel Gutgesell (71), and Calvin Dillon (72). Wingerter’s biggest competition came from Joe Bultman, who started the second round 4 strokes behind. With a birdie and an eagle on the par-5, 11th, Bultman found himself in contention heading to the final few holes of competition.

Wingerter’s final round featured a few hiccups on the front nine dropping him back to +1 for the tournament at one point. Unaware of other player’s standings, Wingerter had to battle through his mistakes to make up some ground. Bultman finished his round with a 69 (-2) and an overall tournament score of 142. Heading into the 16th hole, Wingerter was down by one stroke. KC Junior Tour at Fred Arbanas Recap — The KCGA’s first Kansas City Junior Tour (KCJT) event for the season had a great start at Fred Arbanas Golf Course on June 4 with a field of 83 juniors. Each junior battling in their respectful division resulted in six overall champions on the day. •

In the boys 16+ age division, there was a tie for first place between Daniel Duffin and Tanner Collins, both shooting a one-under, 71. Ian McCrary won the 13-15 age division with a 76 (+4). In the girls 16+ age division, Savannah Oesterle came out on top with a 78, (+6). Jaclyn Koziol took the 13-15 age division with a 79 (+7). In the boys Prep division, Andrew Fowler and JP Hepler tied for first with a 9-hole score of 37 (+1).
