Ryder Cup month all is now on the horizon and despite the extreme heat and drought we’ve experienced this year, I hope you played enough golf that you’ve improved.

With the fall season comes some of the best golf weather of the year so don’t store the clubs away just yet. Now is the time to review your “courses to play” list and schedule tee times before you regret that time ran out and you didn’t get to play your wishlist courses.

September is Ryder Cup month — an avid golfer’s must-watch event. After watching the PGA Championship excitement, the Ryder Cup, September 28 – 30, should be incredible viewing. While I’ve written this before the Captain’s picks for the final USA team players, I would be shocked if Tiger is not selected. After all, he has shown impressive progress since his return to the TOUR this year, and wow, did he make an exciting charge at the PGA Championship.

The crowds at the PGA Championship were massive. Golf is obviously alive and well. Well Done — St. Louis golf fans! Brooks Koepka was as cool as a golfer can get when he took home the year’s final Major Championship and Wanamaker Trophy at Bellerive in St Louis. He will undoubtedly make the Ryder Cup exciting viewing for team USA. Gather your golfing compadres and make your own Ryder Cup challenge. Why not make a weekend of it, changing the play formats like a Ryder Cup? Or, check with your local golf course — many will host some variation of a Ryder Cup tournament. Most importantly, take advantage of the cooler golf season and tee it up at some of the courses you did not play this year. New scenery and challenges can make golf fun. As they say, “Variety is the spice of life,” so add some variety to your golf game and explore new challenges. You might find that a different course could suit your eye and game better. It could elevate your game and enjoyment. Remember, you win or lose with the flat-stick — Putt Well! Thank you for reading our magazine. Enjoy your golf! 6

Stone Canyon to Host 3rd Annual Impacting Lives Fundraising Tournament

T

he 3rd Annual Stone Canyon Golf Club of Blue Springs, MO, Impacting Lives Fundraising Tournament to benefit both Youth and Military will be held on October 13. Partnering with the Midwest Section PGA, the event is sponsored by D&D Golf, the owner of Stone Canyon.

“SNAG, which stands for ‘Starting New at Golf,’ has a great curriculum that meets most Midwest Section PGA standards with great equipment that is used in a school’s gym setting and is very safe,” said Rick Holtcamp, a PGA quarter century member and GM/director of golf at Stone Canyon Golf Club. “With local PGA Professionals training PE teachers and the Midwest Section PGA Foundation providing the equipment, we can help make golf a key component of our elementary and middle schools' PE programs." "Stone Canyon Golf Club wants to be a leading force to help grow the game of golf within the Kansas City Metro but especially within the Blue Springs community, which is our home,” said Kevin Stallings, owner of D&D Golf. “We feel like these fund-raising initiatives help grow the game and fit perfectly with our company mission statement.” For 2018, the annual tournament has grown to include fundraising efforts for the Folds of Honor and PGA HOPE (Helping our Patriots Everywhere) initiative, the flagship military program of PGA REACH, which is designed to introduce the game of golf to veterans struggling with disabilities, offering them a fun and engaging way to assimilate back into society and enhance their overall well-being — physically, mentally, socially and emotionally. “The Midwest Section PGA members are strong supporters and dedicated to these programs, which help all veterans who have courageously served our country,” said Midwest Section PGA Executive Director Brad Demo. Holtcamp says, this is a significant funds raising effort for PGA HOPE, Folds of Honor and SNAG. “One hundred percent of the proceeds through our fundraising efforts will go through the Midwest Section PGA’s Foundation and will be distributed to SNAG, Folds of Honor and the PGA HOPE program. “Our goal is to help grow the game and introduce it to youth and veterans as a sport of a lifetime,” said Holtcamp. The tournament, a four-person scramble, will tee off Saturday, October 13, with a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. Flight prizes, many contests, hole-in-one prizes, raffle, player gifts, plus great food and beverages are all included with the $113 per player ($452 per team) entry fee. Sponsors are also needed to help with this initiative. Contact Rick Holtcamp at rholtcamp@stonecanyongolfclub.com. First 30 teams, so don’t delay — register your team today by mailing your team names with check payable to Midwest Section PGA Foundation. Mail to: Stone Canyon Golf Club, 22415 E 39th Street, Blue Springs, MO 64015 or drop it off at pro shop. Entry forms and more details can be found at www.stonecanyongolfclub.com. An Ace at Age 90 —

by Mile Hull

Who Says Golf is For the Young ?

T

he November 2017 issue of TEE TIMES GOLF GUIDE featured a story about Jack Krueger, a volunteer at Shamrock Hills Golf Club in Lee’s Summit, celebrating his 90th birthday. On July 24 of this year, he again celebrated with a Hole-In-One. Jack, at age 90, made a hole-in-one on the par-3 16th at Shamrock Hills using a driver on the 125-yard shot. It was Jack’s fourth hole-inone at Shamrock Hills, having aced the no. 4 hole twice and the no. 6 hole once. The hole-in-one on no. 6 was on August 25, 2016. That leaves the no. 11 hole the only other par 3 on the course on which Jack has not yet made a hole-in-one. Jack’s chores at Shamrock as a volunteer range from mechanic to course marshal. When we say mechanic, I literally mean caring for a fleet of 70 golf carts; from flat tires to new starters, Jack does pretty much whatever it takes to keep the carts in top shape. He cares for these carts as if they were his own personal vehicles. It is not uncommon to see him wiping down the seats, steering wheels, and if needed, even the bodies of the carts very early in the morning before play begins. On many mornings after inspecting the carts, Jack heads for the 1st or 10th tee, whichever hole the Starter lets Jack Krueger, age 90. him know is available, and off he goes in search of another hole-in-one. Jack will often have a playing partner or two, but if not, he will go by himself to “play a few holes,” as he calls it. When he doesn’t have time to play a hole or two, you will find him putting on the practice green or maybe in the field on the north side of the course hitting golf balls. Few days go by that Jack isn’t playing golf or practicing. Jack greets everyone with a warm smile and a friendly word. His joyful attitude is a great example for all of us who have the privilege of knowing him.  Editors Note: The PGA.com lists Gus Andreone as the oldest player to make a hole-in-one at the age of 103. He aced the 113-yard no. 14 hole at the Lakes Course in Sarasota, FL in December of 2014. Andreone is a professional golfer and PGA member. The PGA admits there is no way to positively know who the oldest person to have made a hole-in-one, but no one older than Gus Andreone has notified any golf institution of making a hole-in-one with proper verification. www.pga.com/news.golf-buzz/gus-andreone-oldest-record-hole-inone-103-years-old.

Tom Watson — R&A’s Global Ambassador of The Open by Alan Hoskins, Feature Writer

ick out just about any award in golf and Tom Watson has probably won it. A winner of eight major championships, he’s been PGA Player of the Year six times, the leading money winner five times and won the Vardon Trophy for the lowest scoring average on tour three times — all of which has earned him berths in at least a half-dozen Golf Hall of Fames including the PGA and World Golf Hall of Fame.

now will represent. “They only played The Open on links courses, and frankly, I didn’t like it at first. I didn’t like Saint Andrews. There was too much luck involved with links golf, and I ended up not liking it for years. It finally got to the point, I said ‘Hey Watson, if you’re going to fight this kind of golf, you’re not going to have much fun.’ I was blaming the course with a high level of anger that it got to the point of being stupid.” The change came in 1979, after he had already won Opens in 1975 and 1977. “It was on the 6th hole at Royal Lytham and St. Annes and I wasn’t playing very well,” remembers Watson. “It was a par 5 playing into a strong wind and I hit a driver, 3-wood and 5-iron to reach the green. The next day, 1983 British Open Championship with the wind, I was 200 – Royal Birkdale yards out, an 8- or 9-iron that I had to bounce between some huge mounds. I hit a 9-iron exactly pin high and had a 10-foot putt for eagle. “That’s when I realized, I had to get over it and the anger had to go. In America when you hit a ball, you pretty much know where it’s going to end up. On links courses, you never know. You’re forced to accept the outcomes. Just like my shot on No. 18 at Turnberry in 2009. Bottom line, it confirmed that in links golf you can never think where the ball is going to end up. You have to deal with adversity, use all your faculties, use the right club and have a feel how far the ball will go — more so than any other golf tournament we play.”

Feherty Uses Wit and Humor to Tell Meaningful Story An evening with famed golf humorist who delivered non-stop laughs at Kaufmann Center. by Alan Hoskins, Staff Writer

F

or nearly two hours, David Feherty kept upwards of 1,500 fans at the Kauffman Center in stitches with an endless non-stop chain of jokes, stories and outlandish comments on everything from golf to the need of a bathroom. “For almost two hours, the audience only stopped laughing when one of his stories brought them to tears of hysteria,” Golf Digest wrote of an earlier Feherty show.

Alan Hoskins with David Fererty Feherty, himself, took the brunt of several of his jokes. “If they come up with a drug that helps you play golf better, I am going to be so [mad] – I looked for that for years.” Growing up in Northern Ireland, the Irish took their share of hits as did his caddy of 13 years, whom he called “totally useless” — then embellished on his alleged ineptness. But through all the mayhem came a most meaningful story. Using his wit and humor, Feherty uniquely revealed a very troubled life. Diagnosed as bi-polar, he’s had a lifelong battle with depression along with a bitter divorce, bouts with drugs and alcohol and the loss of a son due to an overdose July 29, 2017. “A typical day was 30-40 Vicodin and 2½ bottles of whiskey, spelled with an ‘E’,” said Feherty of his early days. “There was cocaine, there was dope. When I think about it now, I’m like, why am I here? My doctor asked me how much I was drinking, and I told him a bottle and a half a day. He said, ‘Don’t you think you need help?’ I said no, I wanted to drink it all by myself.” 12

TEE TIMES GOLF GUIDE

Help would come from two sources — his second wife, Anita, and Kansas City’s Tom Watson. He met Anita on a blind date in 1996, but she left him 30 minutes after realizing he was drinking too much. “I really liked her,” said Feherty, who had to do a lot of talking to get a second date. “When I met her, I was penniless,” he said. “I had lost my playing privileges in the U.S. All I had was a car because of a costly divorce. I was a penniless, homeless alcoholic, drug addict and she looked at me and said, ‘Well I can fix that.’ ” And she did. “I rely on Anita beyond anything you can imagine,” he says today. “I don’t know where we bank. I don’t know how much I get paid. I couldn’t tell you my net worth. But, I love her so very much. I can’t tell you how much.” However, he went through some difficult years before a life-changing 2005 interview with Tom Watson during an exhibition match with Jack Nicklaus at Prince Edward Island. “At one point, Tom just put his hand over the camera and said, ‘You’re not well are you?’ and I said ‘No, I’m not.’ I asked him how he knew and he said, “I can see it in your eyes.’ And I said, ‘What do you see?’ and he said, ‘My reflection.’ “I didn’t know that Tom had a problem at that point. Very few people did. He said, ‘You need to come with me when we’re done here.’ And I’m trying to back out; we’re on Prince Edward Island and Tom lives in Kansas City, so I said ‘How am I going to get to Kansas City?’ And I hear this voice behind me say, ‘I have a G5 [airplane]!’ So I’m getting heckled by Jack Nicklaus. He sent me there with his G5, and I went with Tom and he looked after me for two or three days — I’ve been sober ever since.” Shortly after his show in Kansas City, Feherty headed for Dallas then to Houston where Watson’s wife, Hilary, is being treated for cancer. “Tom Watson means the world to me — I don’t know where I’d be without Tom Watson. He was unemployed until 1997 when he was hired as an on-course broadcaster by CBS, but only after a scare. “CBS said it wanted to talk to me, and I thought it was going to be for 60 Minutes and they’d want to talk to me about my addictions.” He left CBS for NBC in 2016 where he covered the Olympics, the Ryder Cup, British Open and other tournaments. Widely recognized for his Vandyke beard, he’s well-known for his zany antics as host of the popular “Feherty” show on the Golf Channel. He famously once let John Daly hit a golf ball off a tee he was holding between his teeth while lying flat on his back. “I’m not sure whose idea that was, probably mine,” Feherty said. “People asked me if it was computer generated, but it was not. I would trust John — he wasn’t going to hit it fat. He might have topped it. The hardest part was just laying still and holding the tee in my mouth upright.” He’s also rode a bicycle into a rose bush, got hit playing soccer and tennis, jumped into a fountain with 24 inches of water and taken lessons from Bobby Knight on the correct way to throw chairs. “At the end of a Keegan Bradley interview, I told him I’d jump in the Indian River,” says Feherty. “Unfortunately, I was wearing $700 boots, which died a slow death. “But I’m getting too old for that. I turned 60 August 13, and I keep hurting myself. I completely destroyed my left shoulder out in the desert running after a ball thrown by Dan Patrick to start one of my live Super Bowl shows in Phoenix. I landed on the football, and it blew my shoulder apart.” The injury only worsened a shoulder previously injured in one of three mishaps when Feherty was struck by cars while riding his bicycle. As a result, he has not played golf for 11 years. For lots of laughs, the best moments in the first 100 episodes of “Feherty” and several of his hour-long shows can be found online at www.feherty.com. 

great golf course gets a great new clubhouse. Such is the future for Canyon Farms Golf Club — to open in late September is a stunning modern farmhouse-designed clubhouse in Lenexa, KS, that will offer many amenities for its members and upscale dining for the public. “We’re a little bit different in that we are a private club with a public restaurant offering an elevated dining experience,” says General Manager Steve Specht. The public dining will be offered in a first level restaurant that has been named Silo, reflecting the authentic 50-foot farm silo at the clubhouse entrance on 87th Street Parkway about a mile west of I-435 in Lenexa. KC Hopps will manage the dining, adding it to its other well-known restaurant portfolio that includes Strouds, O’Dowds and Blue Moose.

Membership currently stands at 342 with a maximum topping out at 400. The initiation fee is $2,500 but will be increasing with the opening of the new clubhouse. Monthly dues range from $345-$525 depending on the level of membership – individual, family or junior. Membership buys unlimited golf with cart, use of a new state of the art driving range, a 10 percent discount at Silo and use of all clubhouse amenities.

Opened in 2008 as the Golf Club of Kansas and later renamed Canyon Farms, it’s constructed atop limestone quarry mines, which offer a plethora of dramatic views — large bluffs, canyons, caves, lakes, valleys, meandering creeks, large white sand bunkers and a memorable waterfall. For instance, a huge bluff runs the length of the fairway on the 571-yard 14th hole.

In addition, membership earns unlimited golf at any of GreatLife KC’s (who has the

Members will have exclusive access to a “members” restaurant, golf pro shop, locker rooms, club storage, a large outdoor patio with a fire pit on the lower level, a fitness center and private patio on the first level. The public restaurant seats 160, and there are three private dining areas for 40-50 diners. A swimming pool is planned for 2019. “The views from the restaurant and members' patio overlook the course and the valley to the south and are absolutely stunning,” says Specht. “And we’ll be adding a large lighted water fountain in the lake next to the 18th green that will have a direct view from the clubhouse — it will be spectacular.” The focal part of a $10 million project, the clubhouse is a major step being taken by the 14

Canyon Farms Makeover

Canyon Farms’ signature par-3 3rd hole at 146-yards offers a spectacular waterfall that cascades down at the front of the green. The island-like green bordered by rocks on the left and a 20-foot drop into a pond on the right, a cave and a bluff add to the hole’s awesome views.

of the green. “There’s no doubt, it’s the most beautiful golf hole in Kansas City, and it continues to get better as you drive around to the 4th and 5th holes,” says Specht. A plateau green bordered by rocks on the left and a 20foot drop into a pond on the right, a cave and a bluff add to the hole’s stunning panoramic view.

“It’s a forced carry over bunkers and then the decision to go over a creek at the bottom of the hill before attacking an elevated green,” says Specht. In addition to challenging golf holes, Canyon Farms offers golfers much more starting with the fairways manicured by course superintendent Mark Newton and his staff.

Canyon Farms 605-yard 8th hole. Not only is the 8th hole 605 yards in length, it’s a huge dogleg left with a creek fronting an elevated and bunkered green. An uphill 460-yard dogleg, the par-4 No. 7 is the scorecard’s No. 1 handicap hole, but it would be hard to find many holes any more demanding than the par-5 No. 8. A monster dogleg, it stretches 605 yards over fairway bunkers and a creek to an elevated green.

They are outstanding — PGA tournament quality. There’s six canyon holes and water comes into play on 10 holes. Of the five par 3 holes, four range from 178 to 216 yards. There are six tee boxes on every hole making it possible to play the course anywhere from 4,787 to 7,004 yards.

www.TeeTimesMagazine.com

The new $750,000 driving range features five target greens along with a short game practice area with two greens. “Over the past two years, we’ve also installed the Better Billy Bunker System with glistening white sand,” says Specht. Specht has been involved in the golf industry for most of the past 40 years starting at Overland Park and Highland Springs in Springfield. After a sabbatical to raise a family, he spent 12 years at the Family Golf Center (now closed) on 135th Street, Overland Park, KS, and then four years at Falcon Ridge before joining Canyon Farms three years ago. Ian Anthony, a three-time All-American golfer at Bethany College, has been named head golf professional, coming from Oklahoma City where he was the first assistant at The Greens Country Club. “In the next two years, we’re going to expand the irrigation to the rough areas,” says Specht. “We believe, we have a great golf course and need to maintain it. It’s a shot maker’s course and every hole is different. We have new golfers tell us they did not expect to see this style of course in Kansas City. With six levels of tee boxes, golfers finding the right level are going to have a fun experience.” Located at 17501 W. 87th Street Parkway, additional information is available by calling 913.529.2235 or visiting www. canyonfarmsgolfclub.com. 

Golf Clinics Offer Veterans “Hope” by Ann E. Butenas, Contributing Writer

W

hen we give to others, we are not just donating, we are making a difference. The Midwest Section PGA understands this fully, especially when it comes to the PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) initiative, the flagship military program of PGA REACH, which is “designed to introduce the game of golf to veterans struggling with disabilities, offering them a fun and engaging way to assimilate back into society and enhance their overall well-being — physically, mentally, socially and emotionally.” The Midwest Section PGA is a strong supporter of this program, proudly tipping its hat to all the veterans who have courageously served our country. To that end, the Section offered its Third Annual Down Range Golf Clinic this past May through July at Shoal Creek Golf Course in Kansas City, MO.

to participate in a nine-hole scramble during the fifth week, along with a driving, pitching and putting competition on the final day.

PGA HOPE is a six-week two-step program, beginning with the May 31 “Down Range Clinic” hosted by Shoal Creek. The six-week program is kicked-off with a Free golf clinic instructed by Tom Watson. This was the third year that Mr. Watson donated his time offering an entertaining golf swing tips clinic for our veterans.

Part of the appeal of the program for Brazzell was the sense of instant camaraderie it offered him as he met other veterans dealing with issues similar to his.

During the first clinic Watson said, “It’s an honor to be amongst these veterans and be able to try to teach them a little bit about what I know about the game of golf. One of the things about the game of golf is when you’re on the golf course, you can lose yourself. You can lose yourself in the game, and as therapy, golf can be used very easily for this. “A lot of times when you’re on the golf course you’re thinking of nothing else but golf, so it works from a standpoint of getting away from the world, and heaven knows what these people have gone through to do the things they did for our country, and they need some respite sometimes from the rest of the world,” Watson said. Shoal Creek General Manager Brett Plymell reflected on the significance of that event. “This is a free six-week clinic to help veterans use the game of golf to assimilate back into society,” said Plymell. “We had 10 veterans participate last year and 27 this year. We want to continue to expand the program in the coming years.” During the six-week, once-a-week clinic, veterans were instructed on the basics of the game and were also provided the opportunity 16

Veteran Daniel Brazzell, who founded “Team Fidelis,” has realized a new passion for life after struggling with severe PTSD. The mission of his organization — ending the epidemic of veteran suicide by raising awareness, providing a bridge of hope and building camaraderie between veterans and their community — aligns perfectly with the mission of PGA HOPE. “This year has been really rough, and my normal coping mechanisms [for PTSD] weren’t working,” he expressed. “Enter PGA HOPE and my world has turned around. I’m actually happy! It is very noticeable to my family, and they encourage me to continue playing. I am tremendously grateful for this gift.”

“No ice breaker was needed,” he smiled. “It was truly a comfortable situation, surrounded by other veterans who are my brothers. It helps you realize others are struggling, and it makes you feel more connected. PGA HOPE provides an outlet for veterans in a safe and fun environment, giving us a feeling of peace. It’s amazing!” To further highlight the benefits of this program and to raise additional awareness and funds, Shoal Creek will host the Second Annual Colonel Rod Yeager Memorial Tournament on September 9. A well-attended event last year, the tournament raised $20,000 from both participants and sponsors alike, with all proceeds going directly to the PGA HOPE program. Plymell is excited about this year’s event and anticipates an even greater draw. “We expect to raise $25,000 this year,” he emphasized. Rick Schultz, event coordinator for the Midwest Section PGA, has also played an integral role in the PGA HOPE program and continually sings its praises. “The Down Range Clinic was the best experience for everyone, and the veterans are so appreciative of everything,” he reflected. “As we continue to grow this program, we will need more facilities and instructors in the coming years. We also hope to have an alumni day in September, offering a couple of sessions at Shoal Creek. Thanks to Brett and his team, we’re able to offer

these clinics, along with lunch and gifts for the veterans. The USGA also donated practice balls. Everyone wants to help, and there are plans in the works to expand the program into several divisions, perhaps through a Fall and Spring program. The sky is the limit when it comes to ideas. We just need more time, help and resources.” Rick Holtcamp, head professional and general manager at Stone Canyon Golf Course in Blue Springs, MO, also leads with a heart of giving by raising significant funds for PGA HOPE, Folds of Honor and SNAG (Starting New at Golf). “One hundred percent of the proceeds acquired through our fundraising efforts will go through the Section Foundation and will be distributed to SNAG, Folds of Honor and the PGA HOPE program,” he indicated. To raise additional funds for PGA HOPE, Stone Canyon, along with the Midwest Section PGA and Footprints in Fairways, will host the 3rd Annual Impacting Lives Fundraiser Benefitting Youth and Our Military golf tournament this Fall.

“It goes without saying that I want to say thank you to these people who put their lives on the line for our country,” Watson said. “Many other golf pros have done what I did here today. Many other pros. Unannounced, unsung, they just do it. I’ve been around them, and I know a lot of people who have given their time and their respect back to the military, as it deserves.”

Playing Be t ter Golf

How to Master the High Lob Shot

M

issing on the short side of the green (the side of the green where the flag is located) happens to all of us, including the professionals. Adding insult to injury, to have any chance of getting up and down, the type of shot you usually must play is a high lob shot. Many golfers fear this shot as you are taking a long swing, but the ball only needs to travel a few yards. Time to lose the “fear” because with the correct fundamentals and club selection, this type of shot is not as difficult as it seems.

by Rhett Fregoe, PGA

Photo 2

1. Notice in photo #2 that at the top of the swing, the clubface is still open and the clubhead is above my hands. 2. As you take the club away, I want you to feel that there is some downward pressure with your left hand on top of the grip. This will set the club at the top of your swing.

First, to give yourself the best chance of pulling off this shot, you must select the highest lofted wedge in your bag. Side note: It is to your advantage to have the proper selection of wedges in your bag. You should have 4 degrees, but no more than 6 degrees between each wedge in your bag. The common wedge make-up includes: PW, 54-degree and 58-degree or PW, 52-degree, 56-degree and 60-degree. The next key step to executing this shot well is your setup. For those familiar with the fundamentals of a bunker shot, you will use many of the same principles. 1. Notice in photo #1 that Photo 1 I am open to my target line, the ball position is in the middle of my stance, and my hands are below my shirt buttons. 2. Also notice how much wider my stance is and how much lower my hands are. 3. The reason behind this altered setup is so the clubhead has an easier time traveling under the ball at impact. 4. The final aspect to the setup is to make sure you open the clubface at address. To accomplish this, first open the clubface and then take your grip. To execute this shot you must maintain the added loft of the club throughout the shot/swing. Most of my students can accomplish the setup position for this shot; however, what breaks down is the clubface either squares back up at some point in the swing or closes back to square. 22

Your swing thought for this shot is to swing on a letter “V.”

Photo 3

At impact, photo #3, your thought (or feeling) is as if you took your right hand off the club and that you’re holding the bottom of a dinner plate — like a server at a restaurant. This feeling will ensure that you actually use the added loft of the club at impact. A common occurrence is to get your right hand on top at impact which results in a closed clubface. By focusing on these lob shot fundamentals and not fear, you will soon discover that executing the shot is not as scary as you thought. Next time you find yourself “short sided,” work on your setup for this shot — making sure your right hand can hold a dinner plate at impact. 

Tan-Tar-A Oaks Course

and New Margaritaville Resort

The Scenery Doesn’t Get Better Than Fall Golf at The Lake of the Ozarks. Words and photos by John Baccala The par-5 9th hole.

I

f you’re planning a Lake golf getaway this fall then from the moment you take out your clubs, you are going to “fall” in love with Tan-Tar-A’s The Oaks course — that’s how it was for Paul Leahy, Tan-Tar-A’s director of golf. His nearly 30-year stint at Tan-Tar-A makes him the longest tenured (at one site) golf professional at the Lake of the Ozarks. “This is my 29th season at Tan-Tar-A,” Leahy reminisced. “I did an internship during college here and just fell in love with the Lake.

“The change in elevation changes the actual yardage,” he said. “Usually, it’s just a one club difference uphill or downhill, but the sidehill lies are the bigger issue. Most golfers in the Midwest don’t see uneven lies very often, so if you’re not used to hitting off them, it can be really, really challenging.” The par-4, 4th hole is a perfect example. Playing from an elevated tee and facing a

“I had a couple of opportunities [to move], but the timing was never right. I got married and started a family here and at some point, it just felt like home.” Leahy’s home, The Oaks, is a par-71 layout featuring tree-lined fairways and Bentgrass greens. Like many Lake of the Ozarks courses, noted golf architects — in The Oaks case — Bruce Devlin and Robert Van Hagge created a beautiful and beautifully challenging golf experience for players of every skill level. The Oaks also features panoramic Ozark mountain views, 60 bunkers and water is in play on 13 of the 18 holes. Yet, Leahy thinks the biggest challenge golfers face is the changes in elevation and the myriad different lies those changes create. 24

critical. “From the white or yellow tees, you can see the entire fairway, and depending on the conditions, I try and take a 6- or 7-iron and flight it down, landing it 100 or so yards from the water,” Leahy said. “It will hit the downslope and run out, leaving you about 100 to 120 yards from the green. “From the back tees, the fairway is partially blind, and the hole plays significantly longer. From there [the back tees], depending on conditions, it’s 200 to 230 yards to the optimum landing spot.” Leahy encourages players to channel their inner Isaac Newton and let gravity be your friend. “Don’t try to fly the ball all the way to the bottom of the hill or you could be in trouble,” he said. “Once in the fairway, you can be aggressive with a short-iron. Depending on the pin position, the yardage from front to back is about 40 yards.”

The par-5 9th hole (photo at top) is The Oaks “signature hole.” (If you The Lake of the Ozarks longest tenured golf professional really want to visualize it, go to www. Paul Leahy, director of golf at The Oaks course with TeeTimesMagazine.com and look at the story Paul and I did for TV several years 29-years at Tan-Tar-A. ago, about 2000, when we both had hair!) Two well-placed shots down the of second shot over water, proper club selection left side of the fairway leaves you a downhill and playing from the proper tee box is short-iron to a green guarded by picturesque

Tan-Tar-A waterfalls, and the cascading water is ready for any errant shot. With the clubhouse in the background and the waterfalls, it is one of the most iconic and talked-about holes at the Lake. “Nine is definitely one of those holes you have to play a few times to figure out your strategy,” Leahy said. “Off the tee, the play is to hit it to the widest part of the fairway, leaving you about a 160- to 190-yard layup shot. Try to leave the ball along the flattest part of the fairway, which will leave you about 140 yards downhill, so the shot will play about a club to a club-and-half shorter. The par-3 14th borders the Lake of the Ozarks and will often have boat-filled galleries watching your tee shot — don’t get booed by hitting your shot into the Lake.

“This leaves you with a club you can be aggressive with. The green slopes severely left to right, so the best play is right of the flag, so you have an uphill putt.”

“Margaritaville is bringing new life to Tan-Tar-A,” he said. “Renovations are ongoing and will continue through next spring. There is a lot of excitement from guests and staff alike.

The par-4 4th green.

“New, improved and fresh will be the new Tan-Tar-A moving forward.” With nearly 30 years in the books at one of the Lake’s most popular destinations, Leahy is ready to see what the next 30 years bring. Tan-Tar-A is family and the Lake of the Ozarks is home. “The Lake is a very special place,” he said. “I’ve seen a lot of changes over the last 29 years, but I wouldn’t trade my career for anything. I’ve met some incredible people. “It’s a great place live, visit and raise a family!” And play golf!  The par-4, 4th hole plays from an elevated tee, and you’ll face a second shot over water. Proper club selection is critical. Leahy suggests landing it 100 or so yards short of the water. From there, you are about 100 to 120 yards from the green. The back nine is equally challenging and pretty, with two holes — the par-4 13th and the par-3 14th that borders the Lake of the Ozarks. Don’t be surprised if you have a boat-filled gallery watching your tee shot on 14 — anything left or long is going swimming (I got booed). The Oaks has always been a Lake area “must play,” but more so now with the recent changes including a revamped clubhouse which features hardwood floors, a remodeled bar, big screen TVs and a beautiful deck

overlooking the 9th hole. In addition, the course has new maintenance equipment, several new tee boxes and a brand-new fleet of golf carts, which only enriched the overall golfing experience. Leahy said several trees have been cut down to not only enhance ventilation to the greens but also to enhance the Ozarks views. But he is really excited about Tan-Tar-A’s transition to Margaritaville, the Jimmy Buffett-owned resort creation. Tan-Tar-A sold last year, and Leahy is looking forward to this "next step" toward Margaritaville resort excellence.

www.TeeTimesMagazine.com

Editor’s note: The Oaks is one of two courses at Tan-Tar-A/Margaritaville. The other is Hidden Lakes — a nine-hole, par 35 layout named one of the best nine-hole courses in the U.S. by USA Today. If you want to make a day of it play 27 — 18 at The Oaks and 9 at Hidden Lakes. If you only have time for nine, you won’t find a better 9-hole championship-style course than Hidden Lakes. Now is the Best Time to Prepare Turf Grass for an Awesome Autumn

turfgrass will continue pre-programmed horizontal growth without skipping a beat. For optimal results, application of Breakout needs to be five to seven days before any procedures to the greens. A follow-up application is recommended five days after aerification or verticutting.

Get Back to Optimal Conditions One of the most important aspects of aerification to golfers is the recovery time. The quicker we can get optimal preaerification playing conditions back on our greens, the quicker we'll see the benefit of increased play — and increase the bottom line for the course.

Reduce Clippings Breakout is not a plant growth regulator. Breakout does not stop the growth of the plant, but rather re-directs the plant's energy to lateral growth or movement. This gives the superintendent an advantage by limiting top growth, which in turn reduces the clippings made during mowing. As a result, greens will have a uniformly smooth surface for all to enjoy. The fairways and tee boxes reap the same benefits — fuller turf with fewer clippings.

Speed Recovery Horizontal growth has many benefits. Turf-grass recovers and fills in quickly after aeration or verticutting. Increasing hormone levels also speeds recovery from ball marks caused by day-to-day play. We can take it one step further to our fairways and tee boxes. Better root systems and horizontal growth aids divot recovery.

Complete that Last Aerification With fall quickly approaching, there is work to be done. The warm weather is our last window of opportunity to get certain tasks completed. While the air and soil temperatures are still high, it's the optimal time to complete one last aerification.

Increase Horizontal Growth Let’s dive a little deeper on how this is could be accomplished. Certain plant hormones that promote cell division and horizontal growth are present in all plants. Two important hormones are cytokinins and auxins. When we increase the levels of these hormones, we increase the horizontal growth of turf grass.

t's been a long, hot, dry summer but fall is just around the corner. Saturday, September 22, to be exact. I've always looked forward to fall. With the cooler temperatures, the leaves will soon change to the magnificent colors of fall. Eventually the leaves will be drifting to the ground and covering our golf courses. It's a beautiful time of year.

Do It Naturally We could pound our turfgrass with synthetic hormones, but Huma Gro® Turf Breakout® can accomplished this process naturally and sustainably. Breakout stimulates the existing hormones in the plant, giving the plant a little help with what Mother Nature has already supplied. Pre-program Horizontal Growth Stimulating the cytokinins and auxins in the plant with early programming is essential for maximum benefit. If turfgrass is preprogrammed with Breakout a week before aeration or verticutting, the plant will already be in a horizontal growth pattern at the time of aerification or verticutting. The

Finals Held for the Cable Dahmer Cadillac 3rd Annual $100,000 Hole-In-One Shootout

T

Editorial by Bill Cromwell, Photography by Victoria Cromwell

he 3rd Annual Cable Dahmer Cadillac of Kansas City $100,000 Hole-in-One Shootout finals went off without a hitch on July 29. Forty-eight qualifying golfers shot for a prize of $100,000 Hole-in-One or one of five closest-to-the-pin shots.

The par-3 17th hole during the KC Golf Classic Web.com tournament site — The Nicklaus Golf Club at Lions Gate proved to be a challenging 165-yard shot for the men and 145-yard shot for women. Unfortunately, no one was able to take home the $100,000 Hole-InOne prize, but five golfers scored some great prizes for closest-tothe-pin shots. Grandstands peppered with spectators wrapped the backside of green giving golfers a feel of being on the big tour and taking that one perfect shot as golf fans watched anxiously for an ace by a finalist. Happily, no on yelled, “Mash Potato” or “Get-in Da Hole.” “It was really cool to experience playing a par 3 hole on a big stage like we see the pros do on television each weekend,” said finalist Vic Young. “There’s a lot of pressure, and controlling nerves is tough when taking a golf shot in front of a few hundred people. Now, I have a feeling for how the pros might feel. It was a lot of fun — I’ll try again next year.”

making this fundraising effort possible,” said Cable Dahmer Cadillac General Manager Dan Boyer. “With this 3rd Annual Shootout, our goal was to, first and foremost, raise money to help children in need. We also want to develop a solid relationship with the local golf community and help promote golf. My son and I are avid golfers, as are many of our employees. We hope to grow the shootout, making it bigger and better each year. We’ve now had three great years sponsoring the Shootouts; they’ve grown each year and we’re looking forward to next year.” The 3rd Annual Shootout was produced and managed by the staff of Tee Times Golf Guide Magazine in association with Toby Boschert of Boschert & Partners. We graciously thank the 2018 qualifying courses who made the events possible and successful: Minor Park Golf Course, Eagles’ Landing Golf Course, IronHorse Golf Club and Shamrock Hills Golf Course. Everyone who participated received a Free Round of Golf at Shamrock Hills Golf Course or Eagles’ Landing Golf Course.

Leading up to the finals, 780 golfers took a shot at qualifying at one of four courses from May through July for one of 48 qualifying spots at the July 29 finals. Each participant donated $5 per shot. All entry donations benefit Children’s Mercy Hospital. The 2016 Shootout raised $5,000 and 2017 raised $6,500. From right is Bill Cromwell, Sherrill Bass, We again raised $6,500 this year thanks to the Lyndsay Burns of Children’s Mercy Hospital help of Kansas City area golfers! and Dan Boyer presenting a $6,500 check from proceeds raised in the 3rd Annual Cable “We want to thank all of the participants, prize Dahmer Cadillac Hole-In-One Shootout to sponsors and, particularly, the golf courses for Children’s Mercy Hospital. 36

S uperintendents Walk a Tightrope During Drought Conditions . . . by Jacob Rockhold, Superintendent

T

he Midwest has been put to the test this year with extreme weather, or should I say the lack of weather. Some of us have received some decent amount of rain, but others have received very little. Almost all of Missouri and most of Kansas is in some form of a drought. Although this isn’t new news to anyone, I thought golfers might have a better idea of the effects drought has on a golf course. First, it’s felt like summer now since the beginning of May. A near record number of days at 95 degrees and above and the lack of rain — means a tough year for grass growing conditions. Cultural practices such as aerification, verticutting and topdressing have been crucial to the success of courses in the area. In years like 2018, superintendents must stay on their toes when it comes to the health of the turf. Since becoming a Superintendent, I have never been more conscientious of water management than this year. Obviously, during drought we monitor moisture levels around the course closely. With such consistently high temperatures and unpredictable rain events, controlling the moisture in the turf becomes critical for the health of the turf and overall playing conditions. The higher the temperature and dryer the conditions become. Common sense tells golfers that courses need to water — A Lot! However, over-watering can be just as detrimental as not enough water. There’s a fine line for superintendents when it comes to watering turf.

soil becomes too saturated. Saturation blocks oxygen from getting to the plant roots. Without the ability to breathe, the plant starts to show signs of stress (slightly yellow). Now, combine saturated soil with a 100-degree day and you suddenly have created an oven that is cooking the roots of the plant. Combine saturation with weeks of consistently high temperatures and you can have a recipe for disaster. Unhealthy turf and hot humid conditions also provide a breeding ground for fungus and diseases that attack the plant. This is when good maintenance practices come in handy. Aerifying allows the water to drain or percolate through the soil faster, therefore creating a dry, firm playing surface. Everyone likes to play on healthy turf, but not in conditions where the ball plugs in the fairways — when we haven’t had heavy rains in over a month. This is the challenge superintendents face every day. Constantly adjusting irrigation programs and sprinklers to help avoid saturated areas around the course is something superintendents do throughout the day — every day. You may have seen sprinklers running in certain areas, but not the entire fairway. We're watering only were its needed. Because of a consistent supply of water, the plant usually grows well. Have you noticed that when the temperature and humidity is high, that sometimes the playing surface seems puffy or spongey? This is when verticutting or de-thatching the turf becomes important — along with topdressing greens, which allows the turf to remain firm and allows it to be mowed evenly without scalping. In the end, the more we can keep the grass plant healthy and stress free, the better superintendents are at providing consistent and enjoyable conditions for golfers through an extremely difficult summer — like this one. Hopefully Mother Nature will bring us some relief this fall and into winter.

The effects from the lack of water are obvious. At this point of the year, unless you have an irrigation system in your yard, then you’re seeing a thin, slightly yellow to brownish yard. Conversely, too much water can also have similar effects. Over-watering occurs when the 38

Kansas City Area Golf Options — a Chip Shot Away... Shamrock Hills Golf Club

Plush Zoysia Fairways and Silky Greens!

Eagles’ Landing Golf Course The Challenge Awaits Your Skills!

Chip Shots

Fred Arbanas Golf Course — a Day at The Lake

LEE’S SUMMIT, MO — Shamrock Hills Golf Club was established in 1961 by a group of four families from Harrisonville, MO. The same four families maintain ownership today, more than 57 years later. The course offers 170 acres of scenic land with no housing around its perimeter giving golfers a private, country setting with challenging holes through gently rolling hills. For golfers who enjoy a causal round of golf — it’s also a relaxing course to walk.

Belton, MO — Eagles’ Landing Golf Course opened for public play in 1999 and quickly became regarded as one of the best public golf courses in the Kansas City area. The course, located in Belton, MO, on a former air force base, completed a 2.25 million-dollar renovation in 1998 that included the rebuilding of all 18 greens, the addition of two practice greens, a new irrigation system, fairway re-grading and drainage, and the addition of 45 new tee complexes.

KANSAS CITY, MO — Opened originally as Longview Lake Golf Course in 1986, it was re-named Fred Arbanas to honor the former Chiefs Hall of Fame tight end for his years of service as a long-time Jackson County legislator in 2009. Owned and operated by Jackson County Parks and Recreation, it has played hosts to the Kansas City Corporate Challenge, 20 PGA Senior Tour players participated in Pro-Ams here, and it also hosted Senior Tour qualifying events.

Shamrock Hills measures 6,363 yards from the longest tees and plays to a par of 71. Forward tees play at 5,166 yards to a par 73. It’s a perfect course for any golfer from beginner to low handicapper — a fun course to play!

A new clubhouse was built in 2006, and shortly after, it completed a new practice range. General Manager Jay Kennedy says, “Walk away smiling — that’s our goal. We want golfers to have a great time at Eagles’ Landing, whether you’ll play 18 or 9 holes of golf. So, come on down and let our friendly staff show you a good time!”

Course architect Craig Schreiner redesigned new greens and bunker complexes in 2008 at this Scottish links-style, championship course. It’s one of the KC metro area’s busiest courses with 46,000-48,000 rounds a year, not including 18,000 rounds on its par 3 course, for good reason. You truly get the feeling of playing a resort course with its lake views and the rolling terrain throughout the course layout. “The spectacular par-4 12th hole offers a panoramic view of Longview Lake behind the green, it’s just a gorgeous hole and fun to play,” said General Manager Bob McMillin.

Play on plush Zoysia fairways leading to some of the best greens in the Kansas City area. There are water hazards and enough sand bunkers to test your accuracy. Green fees for 18 holes are the lowest around at only $23.50 weekdays (seniors and juniors $17) and $28 weekends. Cart fees are $16. Shamrock Hills offers practice chipping and putting areas and a driving range to warm up before your round. A professional golf staff is available for lessons. The friendly golf staff is lead by General Manager Eric Reisner, whose goal is to provide you with a quality experience including exceptional service and a comfortable atmosphere. They do a great job at achieving that goal! Shamrock Hills is located at 3161 South 291 Hwy — about 3.5 miles South of 50 Highway on South 291 Highway in Lee’s Summit, MO. Take M-291 South to Hook Rd. Turn east on Hook Rd, then South on the outer road. Continue about a quarter mile to the entrance. For more information or tee times, call 816.537.6556 or visit www.ShamrockHills.com.

Distinctive features of Eagles’ Landing include 69 sand bunkers that pepper the landscape like a B52 Bomber made a practice run. The course plays 6,926 yards from the championship tees, 6,348 from the blue tees, 5,737 from the white tees and 4,909 from the forward green tees. Offering plush Zoysia fairways, the course is always in fabulous condition from tee to green. Eagles’ Landing is regarded as one of the most challenging, yet fun courses to play within the Kansas City area. If you go to Eagles’ Landing website, www. eagleslandinggolfcourse.com, it will list the current green speed, how’s that for service! Weekday (Mon.- Fri.) walk $23, ride $37. Weekend (Sat. - Sun.) $31 and $45. Weekday Senior (55+) $18 and $28. Senior (55+) weekend (after 12 p.m.) $31 and $45. Belton residents get a discount (see website). Eagles’ Landing Golf Course of Belton, 816.318.0004. Located at 4200 Bong Avenue, Belton, MO 64012.

www.TeeTimesMagazine.com

In addition to its 18 championship holes, there’s a fabulous and very walkable 9-hole par 3 course, a first-class driving range/ practice area and a historic clubhouse with full-service pro shop and snack bar. When you get the urge for a Lake golf getaway — Fred Arbanas Golf Course is a great option right here in Kansas City, without loading the car for a three-hour drive south. Fred Arbanas Golf Course’s walking green fees are $25 Mon - Thurs. and $36 Fri.– Sun. and holidays. For seniors and juniors, it’s $22. Cart rentals are $16. Nine-hole fees are $18 for adults and $9 for juniors and seniors. See complete details and rates at www.MakeYourDayHere.com or call 816.761.9445.

The Prairie Invitational Title Awarded KCJT Championship and Player of the Year Determined

T

he Prairie Invitational title was determined during a two-hole playoff at Indian Hills Country Club, July 23 – 24, between Emma Whitaker of Wichita, KS, and defending champion Kristen Samp of Lawrence, KS. This was Whitaker’s first appearance in The Prairie Invitational. She will be a sophomore at Oklahoma State University this fall.

Competitors in The Prairie Invitational enjoyed great weather throughout the three days, but the course did not easily yield low scores. Indian Hills, an A.W. Tillinghast gem, proved challenging for players in both divisions. The tree-lined fairways and undulating greens proved to be a great test of golf, yielding a field-best single round score of 71 (+1) by Reagan Zibilski of Nixa, MO, in round one. Zibilski went on to win the Open Division Low Junior award, with a three-round total of +14. Julia Misemer claimed the Kansas Low Junior title. Hope Robinett won the Players Division Gross title, and her twin sister Hanna Robinett won the Players Division Net title.

KCJT Championship and Player of the Year Results Finishing off a great season, 100 kids played in the Kansas City Junior Tour (KCJT) Championship at Lake Quivira Country Club held August 2. All five divisions squared off for a chance to win the KCJT Champion and Runner-up trophy, as well as KCGA’s 2018 Player of the Year award.

Emma Whitaker, 2018 Prairie Invitational Champion The leader board was in a constant state of change throughout the day on Wednesday with Whitaker, Samp, Jess Meek (Columbia, MO) and Whitney Pyle (assistant professional at Ironhorse GC) all holding the lead at one point. Samp charged into the lead coming into the final hole with a birdie on the long and difficult #17. Her lead was erased after a bogey on the par-5 18th, falling into a tie with Whitaker who parred the final five holes. Both players tied the first playoff hole. Samp’s drive on #2 found the left trees, while Whitaker hit a tremendous shot into the fairway. Samp hit a great recovery shot but was unable to find the green in regulation after being left with a long approach. She was unable to get up and down from the greenside bunker. Whitaker ended the playoff with a two-putt to clinch The Prairie Invitational championship claiming the Open Division title. She also won the Kansas Women’s Amateur Title. Samp finished the event as the Open Division Runner-Up and claimed the Midwest Section PGA Women’s Championship trophy. 40

Champion, it came down to Patrick Neal and Benjamin Bessette squaring off in the final pairing of their division to determine the winner. Bessette ultimately took both Player of the Year honors and KCJT Champion with a great round of 78. Bessette and Neal battled it out all summer, and it was an honor to watch both players compete. Bessette narrowly beat both Christian Rischer and Jack Cobb, who would tie for KCJT Runner-Up with rounds of 79. The Girls 13-15 division brought a lot of excitement to the leaderboard for Player of the Year. Lia Johnson would shoot 81 to capture the KCJT Champion trophy after her round that included two birdies. Elizabeth Grant claimed KCJT Runner-Up with an 82.

For the Girls 13-15 division Player of the Year honors was between Tess Roman and the Gentry sisters, Madeline and Savannah. Savannah Gentry’s face lit up like a Christmas tree after realizing she won 2018 Player of the Year as she edged out her sister, Madeline by just one stroke. In the Prep nine-hole division, Drew Krystyn grabbed the KCJT Champion trophy after shooting an impressive round of 40 on the difficult Lake Quivira front nine. The 2018 Prep Player of the Year went to Jacob Fratzel. Fratzel was unable to attend the KCJT Championship due to conflicting obligations; however, after winning four of the seven KCJT events in which he played, Fratzel secured Player of the Year without playing. He was a consistent force to be reckoned — a great golfing future awaits him. 

any of you know, my father, Charlie Mahon, is a PGA Professional in the Kansas City area. He was my main instructor throughout my golfing career and taught me many important aspects of the game. One of the best lessons he emphasized was to maintain a connection between my body and arms. Ideally our bigger muscles — the quads, buttocks, and core muscles — control the motion of the swing. When these muscles are in control, the arms and club can generate more speed and power resulting in more distance and better ball striking. Learning how to have more of a body-based swing can be challenging. Here are some tips to learn how to use your bigger muscles. 1. Start by hitting half shots, only allowing the club to only travel from waist high to waist high. The goal on these shots is to maintain the triangle that is created with the shoulders and arms. Dad always stressed the importance of maintaining the triangle through the base of the swing and learning how to move the triangle with the body. 2. From the start of the swing, the arms need to be moved by the body instead of the arms taking the club to the top of the backswing. You may feel mechanical while hitting these shots, but eventually you will learn how to swing more freely with the body controlling the swing.

In this photo, note the students are working on maintaining the “Triangle,” while turning the shoulders during the backswing. Limit the amount of hip-turn and maintain a centered head position (like student on the left) throughout the half swing. 3. Practice hitting half shots for at least two weeks until you feel confident that your bigger muscles are in control. 4. The final step is to incorporate this new feel into bigger full-swings. Remember, maintain the triangle, feel your big muscles moving the club and look forward to better ball striking!  Coach Courtney
