Golf Is Fun and Healthy
n my never-ending quest to motivate people to play golf (18 years now), I’ve read plenty of articles and reports focused on growing the game, making it more fun and why people should take up the sport. Did you know, there’s an in-depth study that shows golfers live five years longer than non-golfers? It’s not fake news — there’s a study that proves it — Hey Google!

There’s another study that says American adults have moved away from golf. The study says they’re people who love to track step-counts and document their recreation and exercise achievements. You would think golf would be an ideal sport for those people. Perhaps the golf industry and related media outlets should put more emphasis on the exercise associated with golfing rather than the final score. However, for other “wanna-be” golfers, it’s not the score that they want to tally, but the total fat and calories burned, and the heart rate. Maybe that explains why cycling classes are trending. According to Shapefit.com, here are the number of calories burned over a two-hour period playing golf (roughly a nine-hole round) while walking and carrying clubs (the numbers are based on the weight of the golfer, not including clubs, and the terrain being flat). A 130-pound person burns 650 calories, someone at 155 pounds uses up 774 calories, and a person who weighs in at 190 pounds drops 949 calories. If those same golfers pulled their clubs, the calories burned are 590, 704 and 862, respectively. Put into perspective, if people of those weights engaged in “light bicycling” for two hours (without crashing), they would burn 708, 844 and 1,036 calories. Now, add those number by two for 18 holes of golf, and it’s easy to see that golf is a great fat and calories burner. Now for the fun of golfing! Maybe, golfers need to rediscover the joy being outdoors, sucking-up vitamin D, the joy of playing the game and hitting that one great shot, and not worry about making “Pars” or keeping score. Our obsession with par can likely be traced to those who golf for big money and wear red shirts on Sunday’s round. It’s odd though, since they know the lowest total wins, no matter what par might be. How about injecting fun into leagues and move away from traditional scoring, and instead, play two-person teams with alternate shot matches? Forget about match play and medal play, and instead, use various forms of shambles and scrambles. You could do the same fun formats within your everyday foursome! I think it can be done if more emphasis is put on the “fun experience” and the exercise associated with the game we love, and not solely on stressing over our final score. Maybe, living five years longer is a good motivator! Let’s get back to golfing for fun. Start by playing the correct tees for your game and swing.

Takes New Career Path...
L
ongtime PGA member Jeff Miller, with over 25 years in the Kansas City area golf industry, most notably the former General Manager at Deer Creek from 2008 thru 2013, then GM at Staley Farms Golf Club through 2017, is now pointed in a new career direction.
In January, Miller accepted a position as Director of Business Development for the KC based Fairway Suites company. Fairway Suites has relationships/agreements with national franchise brand hotels to look for unused land at or near golf courses to form a business-to-business relationship. Once it has entitlement (or a long-term ground lease) to the land, Fairway Suites will present the project to the hotel franchisers. It then has several options to either take a brokerage/management fee and step out, or in some cases, it will negotiate an ownership position. “I operated Deer Creek from 2008 thru 2012,” said Miller. “I got to experience first-hand the many benefits a hotel can add to a golf course property. Fairway Suites put the Deer Creek deal together with the owners [American Golf at the time] and the 100 room Townplace Suites [Marriott] hotel was constructed on unused land [approx. 1 acre] near the course. The added business for Deer Creek created by the hotel continues to be outstanding.” The key result is new revenues for the golf course that ultimately enhances the value of the golf property. Combining a hotel and golf course, located in an epicenter of commercial activity, creates an unusual country club atmosphere for hotel guests, which serves as a great market differentiator. This strategic partnership and proximity of location generates new and important revenue opportunities for both the hotel and golf course while increasing financial value due to extra income streams. With hotel and golf course management working together, package plans for holidays, weekends, weddings, corporate events, class reunions and other special occasions can increase golf play and room occupancies. A typical extended stay hotel should generate 35,000-40,000 guests per year, of which approximately 7% would use the golf course facilities, as well as visit the food and beverage department or utilize banquet and meeting room facilities. “My role will be to use my contacts in the golf industry to identify/contact golf courses with unused land that might be a good fit for the concept. The property needs to be in a fairly good location so that our hotel partners would want to invest in the hotel. This

Did You Know — Excelsior Springs Demolished its Clubhouse? Did you know that in October 2017, the old clubhouse at Excelsior Springs Golf Course was demolished? Tim Jarman, PGA Director of Golf, says, he is anticipating a newly-built clubhouse to be ready some time during the late summer’s golf season. The new clubhouse is the centerpiece of the city of Excelsior Springs' $2-million dollar planned revitalize of the area that will include new homes to be built along the first fairway, pending city council approval. In January, Jarman said the final design of a slightly smaller new clubhouse was still in the works, but it will sit near the same location as the old clubhouse.
City crews took special care during demolition of the old clubhouse, which housed the nearly 200-year-old O’Dell Cabin (photo above), to not damage the cabin. The historic cabin, built in the 1820s, once occupied land where the golf course now sits. Special care was given by demolition crews to preserve the old cabin, so it can once again be admired by golf course patrons. “The cabin is historic,” said Jarman. “Enclosing it in the new clubhouse will protect it from the elements once again.” While the new clubhouse is under construction, golfers are asked to check in next door at the Municipal Airport. A unique golfing experience awaits you at Excelsior Springs Golf Course, 816.630.3731. Located at, 201 E. Golf Hill Drive, Excelsior Springs, MO 64024, www.ExcelsiorGolf.com.

Helping Golf Courses
Keep Greens Healthy
G
reens are the most valuable real estate on a golf course. Keeping them in top condition is a priority for every golf course superintendent. We always try to be proactive, to address known potential problems before they become actual problems that the members and patrons notice. But even with the best planning and prevention measures, unexpected problems come up. And if a problem is on the greens, then it’s “all hands-on deck” time. Technology is available to help maintain the health of greens, not to mention the entire courses. I’m a big fan of soil and plant analysis, using science to its fullest to help create and maintain good plant health. Soil analysis, in particular, can be a big help, because many turf diseases stem from soil conditions that are known to be conducive to pathogens. These conditions should always be on the radar so that it can dealt with before serious problems arise. Soil is where all things good and bad begin for turf. It is the foundation of almost everything done to create healthy, playable conditions for all to enjoy. Analysis not only gives a view of nutrient levels, but also gives a view into the soil structure, organic matter, the soil’s potential for health and much more. These analyses can also help to see into the future to see if there is an emerging environment conducive to pathogens that can lead to turf disease. Huma Gro® Turf has developed a standard turf health program for greens that has been successful all over the world. The focus is on soil health and nutrition along with plant health and managed growth. The program is a package of four products, all powered by Micro Carbon Technology® for quick plant and soil response. They include: • MULTI-PURPOSE™ for soil health • BREAKOUT® for turf density and increased root mass • TURF IRON™ for color • TURFPLEX® VII for balanced nutrition These liquid products are simply poured into a sprayer tank prefilled with water — no dissolving needed, no compatibility issues, and no clogging of nozzles. Better yet, no watering-in is needed. These products can be applied in your normal application routine and can be watered in as part of a standard irrigation program. Leaching and runoff less of an issue for the course — One of the benefits of the Huma Gro Turf products is that the Micro Carbon Technology protects the nutrient molecule so that leaching and runoff become less of an issue for your course. This results in less wasted product and makes the courses much more environmentally friendly. With the best plans in place and with the best of intentions, problems can still arise from time to time. Sometimes these are the result of inherited problems caused by years of mismanagement, and sometimes, they are the result of extraordinary circumstances that are out of the superintendent’s control.

One such challenge is fairy ring — Fairy ring can be caused by multiple types of fungi. When large numbers of these fungi colonize in a particular location, the soil becomes hydrophobic or water repellent. Fairy ring can be a simple nuisance in the early stages, but it can lead to turf death along the rings when not confronted. When signs of fairy ring first emerge, it’s important to begin treatment before turf damage occurs. One proven intervention is Huma Gro Turf’s PROMAX product — an organic, OMRI listed, broad-spectrum fungicide that can be applied any time without harm to the turf or the environment. It has a zero-reentry interval, meaning that golf play can resume the same day as treatment. PROMAX is both a curative and preventive product. When applied once a quarter, PROMAX can also help to keep a healthy soil environment that is pathogen-free. When spot-spraying PROMAX or any other fungicide for fairy ring, it is important to treat both sides of the ring — fairy ring travels as the fungi seek out new food sources. It is also important to get product deep into the soil environment. Fungi can be present in the thatch layer down to 10+ inches deep in the soil. Once the fungi have been dealt with, it is important to address the hydrophobic “dry spot” they created in the soil. This can be dealt with by applying SURF-MAX®, a surfactant that brings moisture back into the soil and allows healthy hydration and nutrition uptake to resume. Another preventive measure that can be taken to minimize the threat of fairy ring is proper management of the thatch layer itself. Huma Gro Turf’s FERTIL HUMUS® product can aid in this management by decomposing the thatch layer and building a humus-rich soil. Although any turf disease is a complex situation that may require special interventions, the steps and products I’ve described here provide additional tools for the superintendent’s arsenal in achieving overall soil health — the first step to creating healthy greens. Green Partners USA, the Midwest region distributor of Huma Gro Turf products, can assist superintendents with these programs, which can easily be customized to meet the turf and soil needs, along with the budgets of just about any golf course. Huma Gro Turf represents a new technology (45 years in the making) that helps superintendents manage many of their most challenging turf needs. This is a new way of thinking — getting away from the harsh chemicals and conventional ways of previous generations. For more information, contact TJ Blankenship of Green Partners USA at 816.519.6737 or TJ@GreenPartnersUSA.com. Michael Gardner is Senior Director of Huma Gro Turf Sales at Bio Huma Netics, Inc. Should You Get Your Clubs Custom Fitted?
et’s face it, just because you watched a commercial about the newest golf clubs and how they will enable you to hit longer than ever, doesn’t mean they are the best for your swing.
If you want to play better golf, buying a set of clubs off the rack is not the answer. In fact, there is no shortcut to playing better. It’s about practicing, making adjustments to your swing, more practice, and yes, the correct equipment for your swing. Not being professionally fit for clubs is truly a grim oversight for even moderately serious golfers. That’s why a clubfitter can help.
While a clubfitting can help shave strokes for all players, higher handicap golfers can eliminate a decent number of strokes by getting fitted properly. A clubfitter will make sure your lie angles and shafts are right for your swing, helping you hit more accurate shots, and even increase your distances. Mike Dickerson (photo on left), owner of Golf MD, has been in the clubfitting business since 1992 — before clubfitting was cool! Dickerson says, “At Golf MD we offer a complete custom golf club and testing facility, using two Trackman launch monitors, a putter fitting studio and video systems. We can find the club or shaft that will make your clubs perform to the maximum capabilities for your swing — not simply fit you as the average guy or gal.” Golf MD has ranked as a top “100 best Clubfitter” by Golf Digest for the past seven years and a “Worlds Top 100 Clubfitter” in 2006 thru 2017, so building and fitting clubs for amateurs all the way up to touring professionals is what it does best.

New Golf Equipment
New Irons with Tungsten, Titanium, Grain Flow and RibCOR Oh My…
T
he 2018 irons are out, but many players don’t know that Mizuno manufacturers some of the best quality irons, and that is evident by the number of tour players that play its clubs — without being paid to do so. Mizuno has long been known as the premier iron maker. Unfortunately, Mizuno doesn’t have the marketing budgets of Callaway and TaylorMade, so they don’t typically get the press the “big boys” enjoy.
] by Eddie Hall, Equipment Writer
tungsten weighting in the long-irons to help with ball flight. Tungsten is heavier than steel, and by moving it around, the ball flight can be optimized for each club. This means, that by positioning the tungsten lower, the
Mizuno's New MP-18 Irons Callaway Rogue Iron
manufacturers have maxed out the COR in the center of the clubface, but off-center and heel and toe hits have not enjoyed that same high transfer of energy. With its new “RibCOR” technology, TaylorMade is addressing this and “expanding” the sweet spot. In both the M3 and M4 models, TaylorMade has added ribs or beams to the outside portions of the heel and toe. These ribs add support to the heel and toe. This support will allow the heel and toe to flex as much as possible, offering more forgiveness across the face. More forgiveness equals more distance on the off-center hits and leads to more FUN!
ball is easier to get airborne. The clubface has been thinned-out to increase ball speed, but in doing this, there could be more vibration when a shot is hit. To help, Callaway has used a new elastic-urethane to help dampen the vibration.
When you are considering new irons, make sure that Mizuno is on your “must look” list. For 2018, Mizuno has introduced the MP-18 line to go with their JPX-900 series. The MP-18 irons are available in three models. The MP-18 is designed as a throwback to the muscle-backs of Mizuno’s past. The MP-18’s feature “Grain Flow forging,” which simply means that there is more pressure than with any other company. This extreme pressure results in a forging where there is continuous grain structure. Other forging, with less pressure applied, may have “hot pockets” that result in less consistency. The MP-18 SC is similar to the MP-18 in every aspect but adds a slight cavity to increase forgiveness. The third model, MP-18 MMC, adds titanium and tungsten parts to increase forgiveness and offer a more piercing flight. Give these irons a test drive!
Titleist Launches AP3 Irons Titleist has added to its popular AP irons with the new AP3 model. The AP3 irons are touted as the “Players Distance Iron.” The AP1 model is designed for distance and forgiveness. The AP2 irons feature a more “Player’s” look and feel. With the new AP3 irons, Titleist features a new L-Face Insert that is thinner and lighter to maximize distance. Titleist has also used tungsten weights to increase the forgiveness of this club. In fact, 1/3 of the weight of the head is the tungsten. Titleist has added the AP3 irons to appeal to and help the “Main Line” golfer. This club is definitely worth a try. We believe you will like it.
Callaway's New Rogue Irons
TaylorMade's New M3 and M4 Irons
Callaway introduces its Rogue irons for 2018 to compliment its new Rogue driver and fairways. What makes these irons different than all of the others is that Callaway has tried to break away from the current protocols and get the maximum performance from an iron. We believe they have succeeded! The Rogue irons feature their “360 Face Cup” and “VFT” technology. Callaway uses
TaylorMade is pushing speed with its new irons. Speed off of mishits, that is. All golf club makers have pushed the limit on coefficient of restitution (COR). COR is the measure of energy-transfer between two objects. In golf, the two objects are the ball and the clubface. Obviously, the higher the COR, the faster the ball will propel off the clubface, which equates into distance. Most

The center hits on the M3 and the M4 may not bring you more distance over the M1 and M2 models, but by adding the RibCOR technology, it gives you better shot results with all shots. Although both models have the RibCOR technology, the M4 model features more forgiveness and has a slightly larger head. The M3 model has a more compact look to appeal to those who will want more workability and a sleeker look. The M3 and M4 irons should be tried when you are ready to upgrade your game this year. IRONHORSE — Demands a Solid Mental Game... Words and Photography by Alan Hoskins
Ironhorse Golf Course saves the toughest hole for the last. A par 4 monster — it’s 475 yards that requires a drive of at least 175 yards off the back tee box to reach the fairway — not to mention another carry over a creek fronting the green.

Ironhorse’s signature second hole, flanked by white sandfilled bunkers added in 2016, is also one of the course’s longest par 3s. Played from 131 to 211 yards to a green that slopes from back to front, shots hit short can draw back down a steep slope. Behind the green is the new Vista 154, a 5,400-square-foot banquet and event space that was added to the existing clubhouse in 2017.
T
he keys to low scores on any golf course are accuracy and good course management, but nowhere are they more critical than at Ironhorse Golf Course.
Named after an abandoned railroad that ran through the property, a meandering creek (not railroad tracks) comes into play on 17 of Ironhorse’s 18 holes, which includes carries over water hazards fronting at least 10 greens and 18 bridges crossed as you traverse the course during your round. It’s wise to play the way the course was designed. On many courses, you want to hit up near the green. Here, it is not always important to hit it as far as you can, because on some greens, an approach shot with a longer iron might be better than a wedge. A really well hit wedge shot will spin back, such as on the par-3 2nd hole. Usually played into the wind and with the pin played up front, the way the green slopes back to the front can make the ball can spin back off the green, especially in the heat of the summer when the greens are fast. However, a longer iron on some of the bigger greens will release when the pin is at the back. Getting to all those greens fronted by the creek, however, is just part of the problem. Greens are generally large, several with severe undulations, others less subtle but no less hazardous. The undulations on some of the greens require the ball placed below the pin to have a good putt. There are some greens you have to chip away from the hole to get the ball rolling to the hole. Your short game needs to be solid at Iron Horse. Bunkers are something else you probably cannot escape at Ironhorse — 59 of them to be exact. However, these white sand-filled beauties were fully renovated during 2016, are meticulously maintained and actually, fairly easy to hit from. “New drainage was installed and new liner technology used to help drainage and decrease maintenance time after it rains,” said Troy Newport, Ironhorse general manager. “Golfers will love the consistency and playability, and the white sand has changed the overall look of the course too!” Ironhorse saves its toughest hole for the end. No. 18 is labeled by www.TeeTimesMagazine.com
many golfers as one of the hardest holes. A par 4, it’s 475 yards from the back tees and requires a carry of at least 175 yards over a big ravine just to get to the fairway. Even from the gold tees, it's 394 yards and there’s the carry over water fronting the green. Very challenging, you can make a real good par or a dreaded double bogey. With six tees to choose from, the course measures 6,889 yards from the tips (black tees) its course rating is 73.6 and slope of 144. The more comfortable white tees are played at 5,819 yards, the senior tees 5,325 and the forward tees 4,745. A favorite hole is also one of the shortest. Played at 371 yards from the back, the par-4 11th offers three options off the tee — to three different fairways! You can choose driver and hit over the trees, hit a fairway wood left over the creek and play it safe, or lay up straight away to about 150 yards out. Designed by well-known architect Michael Hurdzan, the course got its name for an abandoned railroad right-of-way that ran through the property. The first Troon Golf managed course in the state of Kansas, the course also features many old sycamore trees, Zoysia fairways and limestone outcroppings throughout dramatic contour changes. In 2017, Ironhorse unveiled its remodeled clubhouse with Vista 154. “Vista 154 is a new 5,400-square-foot banquet and event space added to the existing Ironhorse clubhouse,” Newport said. “Vista 154 [named for the view — and the course address: 15400 Mission Rd] allows the golf course to host larger, multi-day outings as well as wedding receptions, parties, business meetings and other events. This project is the culmination of several upgrades designed to enhance our customers’ experiences and provide value to Leawood residents and other customers.” Ironhorse Golf Club uses “Dynamic Pricing,” which by definition, means “constant change.” In general, its in-season green fees (MarchNovember) with cart are from $49 - $72. SNAG Benefits Future Golfers
Program reaches over 300,000 students in over 60 school districts by Ann E. Butenas, Contributing Writer
I
t’s no secret golf is a sport of a lifetime; one that can be enjoyed over many decades. If that is the case, then there’s no harm in starting early, right? Life is short. Grab a club and make the most of it. Thanks to the Midwest Section PGA’s “SNAG-in-Schools” program, youth all over the Midwest region are getting a grip on what it means to learn and enjoy the game of golf. Established in 2011, the goal of SNAG was simple, yet decidedly strategic, and it entailed reaching young kids primarily at the elementary and middle school levels. “We wanted to reach the masses of youngsters and introduce them to the game of golf in a setting they were familiar and comfortable with,” noted Jeff Burey, Director of Golf in School Programming for the Midwest Section. “We work with the physical education (PE) teachers, providing equipment, curriculum and training. One elementary PE teacher can reach and impact as many as 500 students.” So what exactly is SNAG? An acronym for Starting New at Golf, the SNAG-in-Schools program is more than just a way to instruct young kids on the game of golf. It involves equipment specifically designed for all ages that can be used indoors, as in the gym, or outdoors. While learning games that focus on eye/hand coordination, the program also emphasizes the elements of sportsmanship, cooperation and following rules. Best of all, SNAG is all-inclusive and does not discriminate due to physical limitations. All students can participate. Rick Grayson, Section member since 1984, is recognized as the co-founder of Golf in Schools, the flagship program that led to SNAG. Grayson, a teaching professional at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield, MO, along with the late Dorl Sweet, founded the Heart of the Ozarks Junior Golf Foundation in 2001, a 501(c)(3), and in the last 17 years has raised $2 million for junior golf. “We initially raised enough money to purchase equipment to put in 25 elementary schools in Springfield,” noted Grayson, whose efforts ultimately led to every elementary school 16

in Springfield — 42 of them — becoming beneficiaries of the program. He then introduced the program at the middle school level, raising even more funds to purchase equipment designed for older, taller kids. In the Kansas City area, the implementation of the program varies, and teachers determine the number of sessions. Younger students typically have fewer sessions than older ones. Roughly four to eight classes are conducted per unit. In order to train the PE teachers, golf professionals from the Midwest Section PGA
who are certified to teach SNAG conduct a three-hour hands-on workshop. From there, the professionals serve as mentors and remain available to answer questions and follow-up throughout the SNAG sessions as needed. All of the teachers involved are generally surprised at the simplicity of the program and the ease by which it is implemented. Even teachers who have never played the game quickly become comfortable teaching the fundamentals of SNAG, and the curriculum is age appropriate, safe and fun. In addition to learning the fundamentals of the game, students also learn patience, persistence, how to deal with success and frustrations, and most important, how to encourage others and to be encouraged themselves. Currently, the SNAG program has reached over 300,000 students, and workshops have been conducted in over 60 school districts, mainly throughout eastern Kansas and western Missouri, thanks to Burey and teaching professionals such as Brad Volker, 12-year Section member. Volker, of Sycamore Ridge Golf Course in Spring Hill, KS, along with other teaching professionals from his club, is now in his third season with SNAG and appreciates its inherent value.
March 2018
“This is a great way to introduce youth to the game and make them more aware of our Junior Golf Programs,” he noted, emphasizing what a great recruiting tool SNAG is. “We have seen our numbers go up in terms of kids who have become involved with junior golf.” And it certainly requires a team effort to get such outstanding results. Burey, who has traveled to Nebraska, Iowa, Texas, Connecticut, South Carolina and North Carolina, gives credit to the Midwest Section PGA and the Midwest Section PGA Foundation, along with the Kansas Golf Foundation and First Tee of Greater Kansas City, partnering with the Section to make this program possible. He also gave a strong nod to the Greater Kansas City Toyota Dealers who generously support the Midwest Section PGA Foundation, which allows the Section to help buy or replace SNAG equipment as needed. “We also have a great relationship with the Heart of America Golf Course Superintendents, and their support is tremendous,” emphasized Burey. True to his desire to impact lives through golf, Grayson has taken his founding program one step further, creating opportunities for kids in golf outside of PE classes, setting up tournaments between local schools and establishing a four-hole course for kids to play for free at Rivercut. Meanwhile, Burey remains excited about the growth of the program in the Kansas City area, as Grayson also sings its praises. “Kansas City has done a great job, as has Columbia, MO,” he expressed. “This program [SNAG] is also in Iowa now, and the goal is to have this in every school. I guess you could say, we just got the ball rolling!” Ann Butenas is a contributing writer for the Midwest Section PGA. Hodge Park
KC Golf Course Profile

Plush Zoysia Fairways and Doglegs by John Baccala
Hodge Park’s downhill par-4 15th
S
ome may call it “interesting,” others may call it “quirky,” but no one will ever call Hodge Park Golf Course, north of the river just off Barry Road, “boring.” It is a delightful and a delightfully challenging layout featuring some sort of dogleg on 10 of its 18 holes, putting tee shot placements at a premium. “Because there are so many doglegs and a couple of ponds to negotiate, accurate ball placement to provide a good angle into the green is essential,” said Tim Underwood, PGA professional and on-site manager at Hodge Park. Measuring less than 6,200 yards from the back (blue) tees and barely more than 5,700 from the middle (white) tees, you may think Hodge is a “short knocker’s” paradise. Think again! “Normally, this would be considered a relatively short course,” Underwood said. “However, three long par 4 holes and a couple of sharp doglegs make the course play much longer and tougher.” 22
TEE TIMES GOLF GUIDE
It was just a little more than two years ago when Hodge Park began striping Zoysia in its fairways. Fast forward to today and the Zoysia has grown in completely. Underwood said it has improved all aspects of the golf course. “And aesthetically, the course looks much better,” he added. “You can spin the ball better coming into the greens, and when it gets really hot this summer, we don’t have to worry about the fairway grass thinning out.”
Hodge Park’s front nine features a short par-4 2nd hole and the short par-5 4th hole — watch for the water left of the fairway, and a really challenging, almost boomerang-shaped, dogleg-left par-4 8th hole. If you are lucky enough to hit the fairway on No. 8, remember exactly how you did it. You’ll need to replicate the shot on the par-4 10th — one of the most, if not “The” most, difficult holes on the course.
Thinning grass isn’t an issue (thinning hair, on the other hand…) and neither is bunker play at Hodge. There are only three sand bunkers on the entire course — two on the drivable par-4 14th and the other on the par-4 18th. So if you are looking for a beach, better try California or Florida.
“It [No.10] is a dogleg-left from an elevated tee,” Underwood said. “You need an accurate tee ball, ideally in the center or right center of the fairway. If you hit the ball a little left, several large oak trees block any opportunity for hitting the green, but if you’re on the proper side of the fairway, your approach shot is much easier.”
“We probably won’t be adding bunkers anytime soon,” Underwood said. “If you talk to the majority of our patrons, you would find they think the golf course is tough enough.” And I couldn’t agree more. Hodge Park may be small in yardage, but it is mighty in stature.

I love the short, downhill par-4 15th. Make sure you climb the steps of the lookout tower first to see if the coast is clear — then put the driver back in the bag, or else — splash! “You need to lay-up, because there’s water

The par-4 10th at Hodge Park could be a signature hole. The hole plays downhill from the tee to a dogleg-left fairway. Wellplaced tee shots will award a par. Cutting the corner a penalty! Below right: The downhill par-4 6th at 304 yards is a hole that does not require a driver. The water fronting the green is reachable. (Photos by Bill Cromwell) about 200 yards out,” Underwood said. “Two large oak trees border the approach into the green, which makes your tee shot crucial. The green is also elevated, making the big oaks look even more menacing. Hitting over them is probably too difficult for most players, unless you can hit a pitching wedge 130-to140 yards, so most are forced to hit a low shot between the trees. “It feels like making a field goal in football, because you have to thread it between the trees.” Yikes! Then there’s the par-5 17th, the longest par 5 on the course. From an elevated tee, you hit to a sloping fairway that doglegs back to the left. “Most players struggle with this hole because it’s difficult to hit a draw or hook off a sloping fairway,” Underwood said. “But if you’re able to place your second shot correctly, birdie is a real possibility.” Hodge Park has a fourth set of tees, the short tees (named ST), designed for the young
golfer, the young-at-heart golfer and those new to the game. Underwood said the short tees take the pressure off and helps with pace of play while they are learning. Hodge Park has several evening specials for those who want to play the short tees, and Underwood encourages their use for more fun. “We try to talk players into playing from a tee where they can make double par or less,” he said. “It makes the game more enjoyable whether you’re a beginner or not.” This Kansas City-owned course, managed by KemperSports®, has seen several recent off-the-course improvements ranging from remodeled restroom facilities in the clubhouse to a new concrete cart path from the clubhouse to the parking lot. Many,

Underwood included, believe Hodge Park has never been in better shape. It is one of many reasons the course is fast moving up the “must-play” list in Kansas City. “Hodge is a great value,” Underwood said. “It is an easy walk, the golf course isn’t too threatening, it is fun to play, and the staff is friendly and helpful.” Considering all the improvements and its park-like setting, Hodge Park sounds like the perfect combination for an enjoyable day on the course! Grand Summit Golf & Country Club has an Ozarks-like feel ...
17
The clubhouse at Grand Summit is expansive with its large pro shop, restaurant and fitness center. Just outside is a huge practice putting green.
T
hose of you who have read my columns the past several years know that I have an affinity for golf courses at the Lake of the Ozarks. I love the terrain, I love the lake views, and I just love the feel of Ozarks golf, but sometimes I just can’t drive 150 miles to play Ozarks golf. Thank goodness for Grand Summit Golf and Country Club in nearby Grandview, MO! Located near the intersection of 49 (formerly 71) Highway and Missouri 150, Grand Summit is convenient to reach from anywhere in the metro (and highway construction in the area is complete, making course accessibility even easier). As you drive up the hill to get to the course (just look for the big flagpole), you’ll begin to see why Grand Summit has an Ozarks-like feel to it. Now, in its 17th year, Grand Summit features some fairly substantial elevation changes, lots of water and lots of uphill, downhill and sidehill lies.
24
TEE TIMES GOLF GUIDE
by John Baccala
“The biggest surprise for the first-time player at Grand Summit is the deception of the sidehill bounces your ball gets,” said Charlie
“It’s the number one handicap hole on the course,” he said. “It’s a long par 5 [598-yards from the back tees] that runs north to south into the prevailing southwest wind. There’s out of bounds left and right and two large sand bunkers in front of the large, contoured green.” Grand Summit features Zoysia fairways and Bentgrass greens, and plays nearly 7,000 yards from the back tees (6,231 from the White tees). Not being a long-hitter, my two favorite holes are par 3s, the 2nd and the 17th. Both feature significant drops from an elevated tee, and because of it, playing the wind properly is crucial. Go long and you’ll find a creek behind the green.
Mahon, general manager (photo above) and head golf professional at Grand Summit. “The ball will bounce twice as far as you think it will when you look at the hole.” That’s good, because there are some long holes at Grand Summit, like the par-5 1st hole, a 538-yard dogleg left. Mahon said another of his favorite par 5s is the 5th hole.
Remember when I said Grand Summit has an Ozarks feel to it? Well, water does come into play on about half the holes, but that’s not why. It’s the natural terrain. It changes constantly. Course architect Lyndy Lindsay incorporated that in his design, so it should come as no surprise that he’s from northwest Arkansas.
March 2018

17
“Grand Summit gives you that ‘feel of the Ozarks’ because Lyndy worked so hard to keep the natural terrain intact,” Mahon said. “The mature trees and all the grass moguls give it an Ozarks feel too.” Mahon said the secret to scoring well at Grand Summit is keeping the ball below the hole and out of the thick and often unforgiving rough. “The more you play Grand Summit, the more you’ll want to come back. Your first round is normally the toughest, but each time you play it — it gets easier. You’ll get the feel for how much the ball is going to slide left-to-right and right-to-left, and you’ll also know where not to hit to and where the safe areas are on each hole,” said Mahon. There is a certain “comebackability” (I know that’s a made-up word, but it fits!) to Grand Summit. Mahon calls it the “great character” of the course. “The course changes every time you tee it up,” he said. “It really makes it interesting and fun.
“It feels like you’re playing a different course every day!” Maybe that’s why I get an Ozarks-like feel when I play Grand Summit. It is like playing a different course every time you tee it up — complete with the beautiful scenery and challenging layout, and minus the 150-mile drive! Mahon said, “A lot of people don’t know that we allow public play.” We’ll let you in on the secret. Grand Summit does allow limited public play and at very affordable rates — $30 weekdays or $40 weekends and those rates include the cart fee. Proper golf attire is required. You should add this course to your “Courses to Play During 2018” list. For more information about Grand Summit Golf & Country Club, call 816-331-3978 or visit www.GrandSummitGolfcc.com. The club is located at 15101 Grand Summit Blvd. just east of 71 Hwy and 150 Hwy in Grandview, MO.

Secrets to Mastering Greenside Bunkers... by Courtney Mahon, LPGA
A
re you one of those golfers who avoid being in the bunker at all cost? Bunkers are fun when using the proper technique! Let’s learn the essentials to creating effective shots from the sand.
amount of sand between the clubface and ball. In order to be able to use the loft on your club properly, you will need to use your hands. I suggest trying to “flip” the club underneath the ball while maintaining the same amount of loft on the club throughout the entire swing.
Setup is KEY! Unlike most instruction that suggests an open stance and clubface, I recommend the stance and clubface be square on all bunker shots. It doesn’t make any sense to have the stance aim left and a clubface aim right (for a right-handed golfer) with the goal of making the ball go somewhere in the middle. In addition to having a square stance and clubface, you will also need to be farther from the ball, lower the handle of the club, and set your shoulders level to the ground. Photo 1

Align the ball to the center of your chest (photo 1), square to the ball. Practice by using an alignment stick pointing at the ball from your chest to the ball in middle of your stance. Strike the sand about an inch behind the ball (see white line in photo 2). Landing Area Do you know where to land your clubhead on your bunker shots? The majority of people tend to land too far behind the ball, which most often results in the golfer facing yet another bunker shot. It can also cause low trajectories, no spin and inconsistent bunker play. Ideally, the club will enter the sand “only” one-inch behind the ball (see photo 2 above). Practice by drawing a line in the sand one-inch behind the ball, and make practice swings to see where your club is entering and exiting the sand. The goal should be to enter the sand in the exact same spot every time!
I teach new students to mound the sand under the ball (photo 1) to help them swing through the sand. As they progress, the mound is lowered. With practice, they will blast it out and master bunker shots (photo 2). Give this tip a try, and you’ll learn how fun sand shots are and gain confidence to make the shot easy and routine. The combination of maintaining the loft on the club and entering the sand in the correct spot will create the trajectory and distance you want. With these helpful tips, next time you find yourself in a bunker, be excited for the opportunity to get up and down.
Use Your Hands We need hands! Most sand shots require some height to get the ball out. Two things will impact the trajectory of the ball from leaving the bunker: 1) loft on the clubface at impact and 2) the 28

Pro Tips
How to Hit Hybrid Clubs
O
ne of the best advancements in golf over the past 10 years is the evolution of the Hybrids. They allow you to easily hit the ball higher and straighter than the hard to hit 2-, 3- or 4long-irons of yesterday. What? “You can’t hit your Hybrids higher or straighter?” Well, here are a few pointers that will help you take full advantage of those beautiful hybrids. Hybrid clubs (or rescue clubs) are designed to help you get the ball up in the air very easily and quickly — when swung properly, they are far easier to hit well than long irons. You have to remember the “help” is built into the club — you don’t need to do anything but swing the club and make solid contact, the club does the rest. Here are three things most players do wrong when trying to hit hybrids. Hybrid tip #4 will help you save strokes around the green. How to Hit Hybrids Well It’s Not a WOOD! You must visualize a hybrid as an iron. Yes, I know it looks like a wood, but it’s meant to replace a hard-to-hit long-iron, so you need to play it like an iron. Play the ball in the same place in your stance as you would a 5- or 7-iron. (photo 1)
by John Richman, PGA
Gap Your Hybrids • Hybrids come in all lofts and long-iron numbers. One of the biggest mistakes people make is getting a 3 and 4 hybrid. You need to make sure you have at least a 12–15–yard gap from hybrid to hybrid. • Try an every other club number approach. Meaning, gap your club choices with a 3 hybrid then a 5 — skip the 4 hybrid. Most of the time, we don’t see a large enough difference from one hybrid to the next in terms of yardage. Remember everyone is different. The best way to get the gapping correct for your game is to try them all. See what hybrid loft gets you the yardages you need to replace those hard to hit long-irons in your bag. Use a Hybrid To Chip • Yes, that’s what it was originally made to do 20 years ago (I just dated myself on that one), but the first hybrid designs where for assisting with chipping the ball.
(photo 2)
(photo 1)
(photo 2)
When chipping (photo 1) with a hybrid, keep the shaft more upright as you would with a putter. Chock down to the length of a putter. Stroke (photo 2) the shot with a putting stroke. The ball will lift over the rough turf and roll like a putt. Hybrid setup
3-wood setup
• To improve your chipping with a hybrid, use a putting stroke and play the ball back in your stance a little. The hybrid imparts top spin on the ball when used in this manner and gets the ball rolling on the ground through longer grass. So, next time you’re in the fairway 5 – 6 yards short of the green — try chipping with your hybrid using a putting stroke. I bet it ends up closer to the hole more often than your short-iron chips will.
The hybrid club’s ball position set up (photo 1) is the same as an iron. Don’t make the mistake of setting up as you would with the ball position more on your front foot for a 3-wood. Swing (photo 2) down on the ball, striking it like an iron shot. Try To Take a Divot • In a golf swing, everything is action reaction. If you swing down into the ball, the reaction is the ball goes up. A hybrid is designed to not make a divot, but you must try to make one for it to work the way it was designed. • The hybrid will only work well for you if you strike down on the ball like you would with an iron. The design of the hybrid (with a non-sharp leading edge) won’t allow the club to dig into the ground — instead it will clip the ball off the turf. Go ahead and give it a try! 30
TEE TIMES GOLF GUIDE
Give those hybrid clubs another shot using these tips, and soon, you’ll be loving them. They’re easy to hit well, and with some practice, your confidence, like the ball, will soar as high and long.

One of the best drives of the day starts as you make your way through the entrance to the property down the winding Ozark road to the clubhouse. Entering the property through part of the course wets your appetite for the day ahead.
“We have been open since 2004, so we're the newest of the golf courses here at the Lake. We offer a real challenge. It is not an easy golf course. It's not really long, 6,500 yards is about as long as we can stretch, but it has a slope rating of 129, which is moderately difficult for most players,” said Boegler.
General Manager Marv Boegler says, “We have a beautiful setting here at Deer Chase. For most newcomers, the downhill drive to the clubhouse through the entrance is enough to get a sense of the course setting. The view is fantastic as you drive down the hill winding through the trees. You just can't help but start feeling like this is going to be a really good day. The Women of the WGKCPLA Ready for Their 41st Season
T
he Women’s Greater Kansas City Public Links Association (WGKCPLA), founded in 1977, is a great opportunity for women golfers to play courses that they have never played before at a reduced price. It is also a great way to meet other women who share a love of golf. The WGKCPLA welcomes all women golfers to join in the fun of playing at 25 different public and semi-private golf courses throughout the metro area. Most play days are on Monday, and it is not expected that members play every time. Just play in “5” of the tournaments and qualify to play in the two-day championship in August.
Thirty-five of the WGKCPLA members, at WinterStone Golf Course. (2016 photo)
Not only are these women fun, but through the 2016 season members recorded an astounding 44 Aces by 19 members!

Quick Tips to Go Low Be Routine
Believe
A good or bad round of golf often starts with your pre-round routine. When you rush from your office stressing to make that noon tee time, you begin a negative theme for your round — rushing! Slow down, listen to relaxing jazz or any music on your way to the course. Think about your upcoming round and the things you want to accomplish and visualize your relaxed pre-shot routine.
As you think — so shall it be! Believe the next shot will be better than the last. Regardless of the type of day you’re having on the course, make an effort to give your game and yourself the respect it deserves. How many times have you had a round in the 90s, but felt like you shot 78? If you approach your game with a good attitude that emphasizes positive thought, not score, you'll relieve tension, which ultimately leads to better tempo and fewer mental mistakes.
Your pre-shot routine is important to well executed swings, so starting at the first tee, run over some key swing thoughts. Visualize where you want your ball to land of the first fairway and where you want to hit your approach shot from to leave you the best putt for birdie. Often, thinking strategically about your first swing of the day and how you’ll play the hole will keep a poor start at bay. Picture in your mind’s eye the swing you want to create and the tempo to create that swing. Then, pull the trigger. Take that routine with you for the remainder of the holes. For every swing, pick a target, picture it, and make the shot. See It, Feel It, Trust It! www.TeeTimesMagazine.com

Chip Chip Shots Shots
Kansas City Area Golf Options — a Chip Shot Away...
by Bill Cromwell
Shoal Creek’s par-5 9th hole is one of KC’s most memorable par 5s. At 490 yards, the 9th plays downhill from the tee with a slight dogleg right as you near the green. Many players will try to launch their second shot at the green, but the large tree front right of the green is there to guard against such attempts. This can be a birdie hole providing you don’t get greedy on your second shot. A spectacular front nine finishing hole. (photo by Bill Cromwell)

Chip Shots Swope Memorial Golf Course Listen for Lions
Shiloh Springs Golf Club
Shoal Creek Golf Course One of KC’s Greatest Courses!
A Gentle Mix of Links Style Golf
KANSAS CITY, MO — If you don’t already know about Swope Memorial Golf Course, which opened in 1909, then you’ve just moved to KC from Chicago or are a golfing “newbie.” Designed by A.W. Tillinghast, the history of this facility is unlike any in Kansas City, legends like Ben Hogan and Sam Snead played here.
KANSAS CITY, MO — Opened in 1995, Shiloh Springs Golf Club in Platte City, MO offers a uniquely designed golf course routed through the subtle rolling hills — located only five miles north of Kansas City International Airport. In addition to golf, Shiloh Springs features a full-service golf shop, grill, driving range and practice facility.
Swope Memorial’s 18-hole, par 72, 6,274yard course is short by comparison of today’s newer courses. However, by no means should you let that fool you! It’s design is a classic golf course with a deceptive 6,200 yards of hilly terrain and quick undulated greens. Huge 100-year-old trees line every fairway on the course, meaning if you don’t hit the fairway with your tee shot then you will be in trouble.
Shiloh Springs' 18-hole, par 71, golf course features significant elevation changes with a gentle mix of links style golf. It’s a PGA family-recognized course, offers blue markers for new kids (1,500 yards) and gold for the advanced (2,800 yards), along with a teen program for juniors 13-17 years of age. It’s family-oriented, not extremely long, so you’re not beat up by the distance, while it still has plenty of challenges.
The 13th, par-3, 235-yard and 14th, par-4, 416-yard both offer true challenges. No. 13 plays downhill to an elevated green. No. 14 has a severe dogleg with large groups of trees enveloping the back of the green. The signature hole, No. 17 at Swope Memorial, is a par-5, 566-yard hole with an uphill fairway, and at the crest of the hill, you’ll see the Kansas City skyline. Par on this hole is something to brag about.
Shiloh also has its very own, “Amen Corner,” where accuracy is a must. “No. 7 and No. 8 are back-to-back par 3s with water on the left side of both holes and heavily wooded areas on the right, so hitting the ball straight is a must. No. 9 is a par 5 with out-of-bounds on both sides and an elevated green that you must carry on the third shot.
This classic golf course is one of a kind in Kansas City and should be a “Must Play” for every golfer to play at least once every year. While you’re playing, be sure to listen close for the roar of the lions and other wild animal sounds from the Swope Park Zoo just next door. It’s a crazy, yet fun thing to hear while golfing. Greens fees at Swope are very affordable. For information, call 816.513.8910. Located at 6900 Swope Memorial Drive, Kansas City, MO 64132, www.swopememorialgolfcourse. com.
The challenges come quickly. The No. 1 handicap hole is the tree-lined 393-yard 2nd hole, which turns quickly to the left at the end over a creek to an undulating green. The par-5 5th hole has a deep undulating green. The course has 13 bunkers and water on eight of the 18 holes. The back nine is more open, except for No. 11, a short par 4 that demands keeping the ball in the fairway because of tree lines running the last half of the fairway. It’s a fun course to play, so give it a shot! Located at 14750 Fairway Lane east of Platte City, MO. More information is available by visiting www.ShilohSpringsGolf.com or by calling 816.270.4653.

KANSAS CITY, MO — Since its opening in 2001, Shoal Creek Golf Course continues to maintain its reputation as of one of “The Greatest Courses in Kansas City.” The course features immaculate Zoysia fairways, tees and approaches. Shoal Creek’s rolling terrain and tree lined fairways lead to large undulating superb Penn G-2 Bentgrass greens. The roughs are a bluegrass/rye mix framed by strategically placed native prairie grasses and wild flowers. A superbly designed layout, the course is a 6,950-yard par 71 and offers amazing features, elevation changes and liberal landing areas. General Manager Brett Plymell says, “At Shoal Creek, we are dedicated to be the best golf facility in our class by offering outstanding service and a friendly atmosphere that we trust will inspire you to return time and again.” I assure you that Shoal Creek exceeds Plymell’s standards when it comes “to be the best golf facility,” and when you play it — you will indeed be “inspired to return time and again.” Walk out the pro shop doors and onto the driving range, which includes a two-tiered 12,000-square-foot Zoysia tee area, five or more target greens, and a 6,000-square-foot practice putting green. Perhaps one of the most memorable golf holes in all of Kansas City is the 17th at Shoal Creek. The 17th is a 198-yard (from the tips) par 3. From an elevated teeing ground. Your downhill tee shot must carry over a deep ravine and rock wall in front of the green. A truly great signature hole. For more about Shoal Creek Golf Course, call 816.407.7242. Located at 8905 N Shoal Creek Pkwy., Kansas City, MO or visit www.ShoalCreekGolf.com.

NEWS
Why Should I Have a USGA Handicap? by Jacque Madison contributing KCGA writer
U
nlike any other sport, the game of golf has a system in place that allows people of different skills and abilities to compete equitably in a competition. The USGA Handicap System has evolved over the last several decades into what it is today, and it will continue to evolve as technology and information changes. Now is the time of year for you to really consider keeping your USGA Handicap. If for no other reason, a handicap will help you know if you are improving, and you’ll be able to answer that all too common question — “What’s your handicap?” A handicap involves two components: 1) a handicap index and 2) a course handicap. Both components work together to form fair matches and competitions. The handicap index is a decimal number that is the true indication of a player’s ability. For instance, a person with a handicap index of 10.4 would average about 10.4 strokes over the course rating in the best ten rounds taken from the most recent twenty rounds. A person with a handicap index of 10.4 could have a course handicap of 8 on a very easy course and 13 on a very difficult course. The course handicap is determined based on a player’s handicap index and the USGA course/slope rating for the course the player is playing. Each set of tees at every course has a USGA course rating and slope rating. Courses with higher course/slope ratings will give players higher course handicaps using their handicap indexes. Each course is provided with a table for each set of tees for both men and women that allow players to convert a handicap index to a course 40
TEE TIMES GOLF GUIDE
handicap for the round. These tables may be printed and posted on a bulletin board or contained within a computer that gives information on course handicaps when a handicap index number is entered. Using course handicaps allows golfers to compete fairly with other players from friendly Saturday morning games to big championships. For example, if a player plays each weekend with a group of friends who all have handicaps, the group can compete fairly based on each player’s net score (net score is the score the player made minus the course handicap). Handicaps allow larger tournaments to be flighted so that players complete only against other participants of similar ability. Many events award prizes for both gross and net performance in individual or team events. Handicaps are also a great way to measure improvement. Many golfers set goals each year to improve to a certain handicap or maintain a particular number. Many clubs and organizations give a Most Improved Golfer award at the end of each season, which is based on information provided from a player’s USGA handicap record. In addition, handicaps give players a way to measure performance on any given course. If a player’s net score is approximately equal to the course rating, that player had a pretty good round in relation to his or her ability. Now that you have been convinced that having a golf handicap is a good thing, how do you go about getting one? First, ask your golf course about setting up your USGA Handicap. Courses charge a small fee for a year of handicap service. Once you have paid for your handicap and the club has established you in their
March 2018
handicap service, you will receive a GHIN number. GHIN stands for Golf Handicap Information Network and allows you to enter scores at any course you play. (When you provide your GHIN number on a tournament entry form, the course or tournament chairperson will have access to your most recent handicap on the day of the tournament.) Your course or club will likely have a computer station where you may post scores. You may post scores online at www.ghin.com or you may post scores on a smartphone using the GHIN Mobile App. It is very important to enter a score every time you play so that your handicap is updated and will be an accurate reflection of your ability. Remember — every golfer has good rounds and bad rounds, but play quickly and with good etiquette. See how many times you can play to your handicap this summer. You can find more information about setting up a handicap at www.kansascitygolfer.org. Jacque Madison is the Director of Club Services for the KCGA. She played collegiate golf at Kansas State University where she was an Academic All-American. She served as the Head Golf Professional at the former Meadowbrook Golf and Country Club. T
he Heart of America Golf Course Superintendents Association (HAGCSA) will, for the 7th year, participate in the Rounds 4 Research program. Launched in 2012 by GCSAA’s philanthropic organization, the Environmental Institute for Golf, Rounds 4 Research is a national fundraising campaign aimed at generating funds for vital turf grass research and education programs. This turf research allows golf course superintendents to implement the most up-to-date practices, products and grasses into their programs, which in turn, provides the conditions that golfers desire. The Rounds 4 Research program provides a great opportunity for local golfers to secure rounds of golf through an online auction format at some of Kansas City’s and Lake of the Ozarks' premiere private and public facilities. Golf facilities donate rounds of golf to their affiliated chapters of GCSAA, which are then offered to all golfers through the online auction. The 2017 Rounds 4 Research auction raised more than $200,000.
The 2018 auction will take place from April 30 - May 6. Don’t hesitate and miss out on this great opportunity to give back to our nearby universities and help fund their turf research programs. Ultimately, you, the golfer, will benefit.

Bushnell’s New Laser & GPS Combo
B
by Bill Cromwell, Publisher
ushnell introduced its new Hybrid rangefinder at the January PGA Show, which includes both laser and GPS technology. Laser features • PinSeeker w/ JOLT • Accurate to 1-yard • 5X Magnification • Ranges 400 yards to Flag • Fast Focus System • Stable-Grip Technology • Tournament Legal GPS features • Front/Center/Back Readouts • Up to 4 hazard per hole • Bluetooth • Auto course recognition • Auto hole advance
“Golfers continue to crave more and more technology,” said Kansas City Bushnell Outlet Stores Manager Monty King. “Bushnell continues to develop products that cater to their ever-changing needs.” Bushnell's latest Hybrid product, a rangefinder GPS combo is not exactly a new idea — the company released a similar product also called the Hybrid back in 2013, and we profiled it in our June 2013 issue. It was greeted with mixed public reviews. However with the advancements in the tech field, this new version Hybrid offers the golfer a more stable device with Bushnell’s latest technology. The company says upon locking in on your target, you’ll get yardages to the front, back and middle of the green, plus the exact distance to the flag. And the exterior LCD screen gives you quick GPS yardage readouts to the front, back and middle when that’s all you need to know. When you want the exact distance to the flag — use the laser. “Many golfers come into our stores and buy both a Laser and a wristworn GPS,” said King. “The Hybrid will be great for those golfers who want yardages that both devices offer, but don’t want to wear a watch/GPS.” The Bushnell Hybrid features the same vibration-JOLT technology as its other laser rangefinders. It also has Bluetooth technology to identify course updates, which will pop up within the Bushnell app. The unit comes pre-loaded with 36,000 courses across 30 countries, as does all the company's products and never any subscription fees. It will be available at retail stores in mid-April, says King. Retail price is $399.99. Bushnell also announced two other new products, which we will profile in our April issue. Bushnell Factory Outlet Stores: Lee’s Summit store 816.525.2220, 445 Murry Rd., Lee’s Summit, MO 64081, or Lenexa store, 913.310.0783, 8500 Marshall Dr., Lenexa, KS 66214. www.BushnellGolf.com.

T
here’s a new 2018 calendar celebrating local Kansas City Area Golf Course Dogs of the “Heart,” which will benefit the Heart of America Chapter of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA).
Endorsed by Mike Hull, KC Golf Guys Radio Show Host
The brainchild of Jeff Burey, PGA, the calendar is a fundraising project sponsored by the Midwest Section PGA Foundation. It will give 100-percent of the donation proceeds to the Heart of America Chapter of GCSAA for its Wee One Foundation, which was established to financially assist national golf course industry professionals and their families who have suffered a catastrophic illness and are in need of financial assistance.
Order online at www.Greentechenv.com/mlh16
“The Golf Course Dogs calendars can be picked-up at many KC area golf courses for free,” said Burey. “While, there is a limited supply, which we don’t expect will last long, golfers can get a calendar free, and if they’d like, they can make a donation to the Midwest Section PGA Foundation whom will in turn present a check to the Wee One Foundation. Superintendent Assistant Taylor Olson of Hallbrook Country Club with Fisher, his 2-1/2-year-old Yellow Lab. Fisher loves to chase anything that runs or flies!
2018
“Despite the wide variety of the 12 dogs we’ve featured, I’m fairly certain they all have one thing in common — they all get to go to the golf course every day, and they love it!” For area golfers, this is a great opportunity to pay it forward and help others through the Wee One Foundation. The EWGA Spring Tee-Off
T
by Victoria Cromwell
he Executive Women’s Golf Association (EWGA) Spring Tee-Off will be April 14, at Drumm Farm Golf Club. The Spring Tee-Off signals the beginning of the association’s season for members and prospective members alike. All women — beginners, seasoned or “wanna be golfers” — are welcome to attend and to join the EWGA. The EWGA offers events, clinics, leagues, networking and championship opportunities for all levels of golfers. According to the EWGA’s own historical information, a group of 28 businesswomen led by Nancy Oliver wanted to learn to play the game of golf and founded the organization in July 1991 in West Palm Beach, FL. These women were ready to learn how to play the game — not just how to swing the club. Oliver, determined to learn all aspects of the game, developed an eight-week comprehensive instructional clinic that included skills, rules, etiquette, equipment, proper golf attire, golf terminology and the business protocol associated with golf. Through the clinic, the women were able to incorporate golf and business into a positive and effective new tool for success. Since 1991, EWGA, a not-for-profit organization, has grown to 120 chapters and over 18,000 members throughout the United States and Canada.
