Wow Those Kids Are Good! ’m not sure what was more fun to watch last month, the Masters or the 2018 Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals — wow those kids are good!

I watched a 14-year-old girl hit a drive of 233 yards, a 13-year-old girl hit a drive of 219 yards, three 14-15-year-old boys hit drives of 242 to 262 yards and a 10-year-old boy with a drive of 239 yards. And, their chipping and putting was just as awesome. After watching these kids, I used the shot distance feature on my Bushnell GPS watch, which tells you how far you have hit any club in your bag. I was quickly humbled to know that 10 to 15-year-old girls and boys hit drives farther than most of the golfers I play with — including me. Wow, those kids have amazing golf swings! Maybe it’s time my group moves up a tee box. See the 2018 Drive, Chip and Putt local qualifying sites schedule on page 8 and qualify for the 2019 National Finals at the Masters. This year’s Masters was no doubt one of the best in recent years. Watching Patrick Reed hang on to the lead for 72 holes was impressive. Imagine, playing that well four days in a row. More often than not, I can’t hold it together for 18 holes! It’s no secret that most golf fans were pulling for Fowler, Spieth, Bubba or even Rahm to make a miracle come back during the final round and sport that coveted green jacket. It was exciting to watch! Patrick Reed said in a post-game interview, “I’m not sure why people don’t like me.” Most of the fan animosity goes back to Reed’s college antics. Reportedly, he didn’t socialize with his teammates and was disliked. Others don’t like his demeanor on the course or lack of fan interaction. College days have long passed for Reed, and no matter what people think of him, he was the only golfer to hold a 72-hole lead at this year’s Masters. He made it to the Butler Cabin for a green jacket, which, by the way, was slipped on by another (at one time) somewhat controversial golfer. Jason Dufner is another interesting guy. I’ll never forget when he won last year’s Memorial Tournament, and as golf fans cheered with screams of joy for his win, he walked through the crowd with no acknowledgments to them. It wasn’t until he reached family and friends that he smiled like Kuchar. Dufner’s career earnings to date are over $25,000,000. I assume, he doesn’t care what I think of how he celebrates victories. Still, I’ll be watching The Players Championship, May 10 - 13 at TPC Sawgrass, and the Memorial Tournament, May 31 – June 3 at Muirfield Village G.C. Until then, I hope to see you on the golf course.

Unveils Tournament Website and Social Media Handles

he national Drive, Chip & Putt Championship is a joint initiative founded in 2013 by the Masters Tournament, the USGA and the PGA of America. Drive, Chip and Putt is a free nationwide junior golf development competition aimed at growing the game by focusing on the three fundamental golf skills. Drive, Chip and Putt provides aspiring junior golfers, girls and boys ages 7-15, an opportunity to compete with their peers in qualifiers around the country. Participants who advance through local, sub-regional and regional qualifying in each age/gender category earn a place in the National Finals, which is conducted at Augusta National Golf Club the Sunday before the Masters tournament and is broadcast live by the Golf Channel. Registration for Drive, Chip and Putt is now open. While local qualifying is available in all 50 states, junior golfers within the Kansas City and Lake of the Ozarks areas can qualify at the following courses. Unity Village Golf Club Opens New Pro Shop! Welcomes new superintendent and more…

he Unity Village Golf Club, founded in 1921, opened as a private course for Unity members, but in 2015, the course opened to public play, and ongoing upgrades and additions have been in the works since.

shop enables more inventory that was not possible before. Men and women’s restrooms are also brand-new, along with a kitchen and office space for James Burrow, the new superintendent and manager of grounds.

In July 2017, a new outdoor deck area, accommodating up to 48 people, was added to the clubhouse — complete with umbrella tables and chairs, a bar rail and rail-bench seating. “The deck addition is something we’ve wanted to do for a long time, and now that it’s complete, it will be great for our golf tournaments to have plenty of space for their outing guests,” said Max Yost, former manager of grounds — now retired. “We were able to complete the deck job quickly over the July 4th week, thanks to all the volunteers who built it — they did a great job.”

Burrow came to Unity Village last winter with big shoes to fill after Yost’s retirement at the same time. Yost, had been the superintendent and manager of grounds for 43 years. “It was time to retire,” said Yost. “I’ve loved every day of working here and seeing all the changes over the years, but now, maybe I’ll have time to play more golf.”

The new carts are top-of-the-line with an interesting color scheme — a classy navy-blue color with flat black roofs and yes, windshields too. After the new carts were delivered and deck area opened. Yost said, “Our next project is to totally remodel the pro shop.”

Burrow said, “I have been a golf course superintendent for the past eight years and worked at golf courses for over 15 years. I plan on doing some things the way Max did but, I also have some new ideas, which I feel will be beneficial for Unity Village Golf Course and will continue to make it the place that everyone has come to enjoy.”

If all that work was not enough. Last year, the course also opened a new driving range with both artificial turf and grass teeing areas to yardage targets up to 280 yards. There’s also a chipping and putting green to warm-up at before your round. In April this year, an all-new, nearly 1,000-square-foot pro shop and snack bar opened. Prior to the opening, the old classic but small pro shop was about 500 square feet and did not offer food products, nor had it changed much since the course opened. There was a small residence to the rear of the old pro shop that was gutted, and that area of the clubhouse is a new snack bar that serves hot foods, beer and cold beverages. The expanded pro 10

The 9-hole course plays at 2,937 yards from the blue tees and 2,452 yards from the red tees. It is not a long course; however, the shortest hole for men or women is a 185-yard par 3. The course has one par 3 and one par 5, but from the white tees, you can play two of the par 4s as par 3s and convert it to a par 34. You will then be playing a 185-yard par 3, as a 215-yard par 3 and then another par 3 at 225 yards.

While not extremely long, the course has plenty of challenges for accuracy off the tee to hit the fairway, or you’ll be punching shots out from under a tree. There are plenty of uphill, downhill and uneven lies, and you will be challenged with small target greens, so you better be accurate with iron shots on approach. There are very few sand bunkers and the average green in only 3,000 square feet, but are nearly devoid of ball marks, well-maintained, fast and fun to play!

Cleveland has introduced the CBX line of wedges, which is designed for players that use cavity-back irons. There are cavity-back wedges being offered, but they typically don’t have the newest in groove technology — Tour Zip grooves. Cleveland decided to incorporate the newest groove technology in a cavity-back wedge in its new CBX wedge. By using a cavity-back design and moving the weight in the head, Cleveland has been able to add forgiveness to the wedge. The CBX line is designed with the Dual V-Sole, which features a V shaped design running both front to back and from heel to toe. The front to back V is designed to offer better interaction with the turf. The heel to toe V gives more forgiveness by having a slightly wider toe and a thinner heel that promotes playability. The Tour Zip grooves, with Rotex technology, are deeper and narrower for more spin. f it’s been a few years since you’ve replaced your wedges with new wedges, then it’s time you take a serious look at doing so. Did you know that after 75 rounds, your wedge can increase roll-out distance by 18 feet? That means, it has lost “stopping power” that you need to account for during approach shots. This could prove to be the year to improve your golf game by “slamming on the brakes” with new wedges. Let’s take a look at some of 2018 wedge options.

of a clubfitter at your local golf course pro shop, you can get the correct wedges for your game. The Callaway Mack Daddy 4 (MD4) wedges are making heads turn with a proprietary “Groove in Groove” technology, which creates 84 points of contact on the face. This face roughness maximizes the spin on the wedges by creating grooves on top of grooves (photo on lower left). Callaway offers four sole grinds in the MD4 wedges. The C-Grind (8-degrees of bounce) is designed for players with a shallower angle of attack. The S-Grind is 10-degrees of bounce and fits most swing types and turf conditions. The W-Grind and the new X-Grind are both wedges with 12-degrees of bounce and are ideal for the player who has a steeper attack angle and softer ground conditions. The MD4 wedges come in 21 different combinations of loft and bounce. Ping Glide 2.0 wedges are designed for the needs of all players. Ping’s priority in creating the Glide 2.0 wedge was to increase spin, while keeping the elegant, sleek look of the Glide wedge. Additional grooves have been added to the face to accomplish this. These wedges come with a variety of lofts and sole designs to appeal to players of all abilities. A good wedge offering that might fit your game. Mizuno’s new S18 wedges are forged from 1025 Boron to give golfers a great combination of feel and strength. Mizuno has increased the roughness on the face, with “Quad Cut Grooves,” to increase spin, and the wedges feature a floating center of gravity for better control. Mizuno makes very good wedges and are worth a test drive. The selection of quality wedges for 2018 is quite large, so golfers must be asking, “How do I choose the right wedge for my game?” The only way to make a good/correct choice is to visit your local golf course pro shop. Your clubfitter will be able to go over the benefits of each wedge. Then you should try the clubs outside in “real life” conditions for the best fit for “you.” The enjoyment of the game comes when you get the correct wedges for “your” game.  See what happens with your old wedges on page 28. om Watson has not played a round of golf at Shadow Glen Golf Club since winning the Watson Challenge in 2009. He has not won a Watson Challenge in the last four years and, until mid-April, had not played a competitive round in a couple of months. He’s also coming off his worst finish at the 2017 Challenge. His playing time is limited by his wife’s battle with cancer, and at 68 years of age, he no longer hits the ball nearly as far as youngsters like Andy Spencer and Chase Hanna, the winners of two of the last three Challenges. So, he’s not a contender in the 12th annual Watson Challenge at Shadow Glen June 8-10? Considering Watson’s won five Challenges and finished second four times (twice in playoffs), better not count him out. You need to go no farther than this year’s Par 3 tournament at the Masters, where Watson ended a lengthy layoff by becoming the oldest to win, finishing with a 6-under par 21, while playing with fellow golf legends Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player. “I said after I birdied the first four holes, it would be all right to win,” Watson said, who also won it in 1982. “Of course, you never win the tournament if you win the par 3, but since I’m not playing the tournament, let’s go

for it this year.” His playing partners were ecstatic. “Seeing Tom at 68 and putting the way he did was simply a joy,” said Player. “The Watson of old,” echoed Nicklaus. “The only two-putt green he had was on the last one.” As for this year’s Watson Challenge, “He’s definitely going to be a factor,” asserts Rob Wilkin, the 2016 Challenge champion and PGA professional from Heritage Park. “I played with him in the first-round last year, and he didn’t play particularly well — then shot 69 the last

round. He’s still awesome to watch. The lights could come on, and he could beat anyone,” said Wilkin. “Until he stops playing, you can never count him out,” says Blue Hills head pro Sean Dougherty, who has finished runner-up in a record five Challenges. “It’s unbelievable, the drive and determination the guy has. It’s amazing. I’ve never met a more competitive player. He might not show his competitiveness as much as a Patrick Reed. Tom is more subtle and reserved, but it’s there.” While his enthusiasm and competitive fire still burns, there’s a new passion in Watson’s life — following in wife Hilary’s footsteps riding cutting horses, a 2½ minute equestrian event in which a rider and horse must separate two cows from a herd. “I’ve not had a whole lot of chances to have a club in my hand; I’ve been practicing my horsemanship,” says Watson. “It’s like Kermit the Frog says, I came to a fork in the road and I took it. There are a whole lot of variables in horsemanship. It’s a different arena, judges, cows, horses, a lot more. It’s not like being out there with a club in your hand and one decision.”

and the Legends of Golf with Andy North at the Top of the Rock in Branson. He’ll only play in about seven events this year including the U.S. Senior Open, the British Senior Open at St. Andrews and The First Tee championship at Pebble Beach in September. Four other former champions have been invited to be in the field headed by Andy Spencer (2017 Champion), who at age 19 demolished last year’s field at Milburn Country Club. Firing a record 12-under par 204, Spencer won by a record seven shots over Hanna, the 2016 champion, and Spencer’s teammate at SM East High School and the University of Kansas. Wilkin and 2012 champ Joe Ida are also expected, along with veterans Dougherty and Steve Groom, one of three golfers along with Watson and Wilkin to play in every Challenge. Hanna held off Watson by one shot to win the 2015 Challenge at Mission Hills, and Wilkin won a five-hole playoff over Watson in 2016 before Spencer blew away the field with three sub-par rounds, 16 birdies and four bogeys in 2017.

It was, in fact, the 477-yard par-4 13th where Watson sealed his 2009 win in a duel with Sean Dougherty. “Sean double bogeyed the 13th hole to give me some breathing room; until then we were neckand-neck,” remembered Watson, who finished five shots in front with a 7-under 209. Birdies most likely will come early. “No. 1 is short [360 yards], but going up a pretty drastic hill, and you need a wedge or 9-iron to get the ball to the hole,” says Watson. “No. 2 is a par 5 [552 yards] that is reachable in two; and No. 3 is a short hole [348 yards] where you don’t have to hit driver. I like a course where you can get off to a good start — like Pebble Beach.” “You need to get off to a good start,” agrees Shadow Glen head professional David Resch. “One through five are good scoring holes. I always say, the golf course starts at No. 6; No. 6 through No. 13, with the par-3 No. 12 probably the most bogeyed hole on the course.”

There are three in particular. “No. 6 [465 yards] is uphill and all you want; one of the toughest holes,” says Watson. “No. 12 is long a par 3 [260 yards] with a big elevation drop, and No. 13 is a dogleg-right with an oxbow creek on the left — you have to play well. Those three — it’s a real challenge to make par.”

Founded by Watson in 2007 to determine Kansas City’s best golfer, the Challenge has exceeded all expectations, producing outstanding golf, exciting finishes, raised thousands and thousands of dollars for The First Tee of Greater Kansas City and buoyed Kansas City’s interest in the game. “It’s important to me and golf in Kansas City,” says Watson, a PGA Hall of Famer. “It’s got more people playing competitive golf. They want to get in; they want to play in it.” And despite being 68, Watson is not contemplating not competing, “I’ve not thought about that at all; I still intend to play.”

Shadow Glen’s 401-yard par-4 9th hole flanked by a pond and bridge with a waterfall is one of the prettiest golf holes within the KC area. In Shadow Glen, Watson returns to a course he designed with Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish. “As designer, I do know it pretty well and probably have a little advantage,” he says. “There’s a lot of holes you need to know where to hit the ball.”

Developing Youth, Military and Community Programs Through Section’s Charitable Foundation...

“I

mpacting lives through golf.” Those four simple words have the honor of fulfilling a mission that has touched and continues to touch countless lives, due to the efforts of the individuals supporting the Midwest Section PGA Foundation. Although it took just nine months to establish in 2007, this charitable foundation has already created a legacy for a lifetime. Thanks to the tireless dedication of its board of directors and officers, the unpaid stewards of the Foundation, all of the monies acquired through generous sponsorships and/or grants are actively invested in the Foundation’s three pillars of service: youth, military and community programs.

Foundation was organized as a 501(c)(3) entity so we could raise funds with the purpose of giving it away by providing programs within our stated pillars.” Here is a glimpse into some of the many ways donations from the Foundation have supported its three pillars of giving. The Foundation has donated funds to support the Starting New at Golf (SNAG) programs in local schools. SNAG is a way to introduce youth to the game and make them aware of available junior golf programs. The Foundation has also supported its Footprints in Fairways initiative, the U.S. Kids Golf (Kansas City) Tour and PGA Junior League Golf programs.

The Midwest Section PGA continually strives to develop and advance opportunities for youth through the game of golf; to improve the physical, mental and social rehabilitation of military heroes and their families through the sport of golf; and to build goodwill, enhancing the quality of life and be the difference maker in the community through the game of golf. “The Midwest Section PGA Foundation represents the spirit of over 300 PGA professionals and friends of our sport,” emphasized Randy Towner, general manger/head professional at Firekeeper Golf Course in Mayetta, KS, and Foundation board member. “Each day we strive to impact lives through golf. Our foundation continues that commitment beyond our own clubs, through these three pillars.” Golf has been described as the game of a lifetime, and through this foundation, it is also showing its ability to remain an avenue to reach as many people as possible. Legendary golfer Arnold Palmer was once quoted as saying, “I believe golf can solve the world’s problems.” It appears, the individuals who support the Midwest Section PGA Foundation caught a whiff of that sentiment and have taken it to heart. “One of the ways we share the benefits of this great game is through this charitable foundation,” expressed Randy Hunt, President of the Foundation and PGA professional. “The Midwest Section PGA 16

In support of the military, the Foundation has raised funds for PGA HOPE, contributing $7,000 towards the purchase of adaptive equipment, golf course fees, professional fees and lunch for veterans who participate in the programs. The Foundation has also been the title sponsor for the Kansas City Chapter of Folds of Honor and has sponsored the annual Down Range Clinic, which benefits veterans and active military members. In the community, the Foundation has donated thousands of dollars to various organizations, including the Victory Junction Gang Camp, the Noyes Home for Children, the Boys and Girls Club of Kansas City, and the Boys Scouts of America, Heart of America Council. “I have been actively involved in the golf industry for nearly five decades, and I can honestly say nothing has given me more satisfaction than to be involved with the Foundation,” reflected Hunt. “At its core, philanthropy is anything that represents a

direct effort to help others — ideally, effort expended without expectations of getting something in return. Most of us learned as children that sharing is a good thing. We didn’t know we were practicing philanthropy. We just knew that giving to other people or important causes made us feel good.” Even though the Foundation has been in full swing for over a decade, it has barely scratched the surface in terms of its ability to serve so many worthwhile causes and organizations, and the enthusiasm its supporters have for its mission has gained considerable velocity and enthusiasm over the years. “The reason I am excited to be a part of the Foundation Board of Directors is to help provide charitable support to our Kansas City community through the game of golf,” indicated Andy Fisher, PGA head golf professional at The Kansas City Country Club. “We are actively providing/supporting programming for military veterans, people in our community with mental or physical handicaps, golf in-schools programs, junior golf activities, women’s programming, scholarship opportunities, etc. Our Footprints in Fairways philosophy identifies the many avenues with which our Foundation comes in contact. For example, a recent visit to Children’s Mercy Hospital from our Foundation board members brought the SNAG program to kids who are long-term patients. Putting a smile on their faces was quite enjoyable. Seeing the smiles on the faces of the kids and their parents was a special experience, and to be able to provide all of the help that we offer through the game of golf is a very rewarding feeling.” Whoever said that money cannot buy happiness was probably not familiar with the Midwest Section PGA Foundation, which has proven that money can certainly buy you happiness — if you spend it on someone else.  Ann Butenas is a contributing writer for the Midwest Section PGA. Do You Have The Correct Grip? —

Remember the Three P’s.

he grip is the most important fundamental in golf. Posture and alignment are important, but a having a solid grip will lead to a square clubface, consistent strikes and more distance. If you are struggling with making solid contact or fighting the dreaded slice or hook, the first checkpoint is your grip. You’ll be on your way to a better grip and golf game as long as you can remember the Three P’s: Placement, Pressure and Precision.

How tight should you be holding the club? On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being a death grip, I want you to think 6-7 in terms of pressure. To check your hold, hold the club out in front of you, parallel to the ground. Next, have a friend try to pull the club out of your hands. If held properly, your friend should be able to pull the club out of your hands with slight resistance. When demonstrating this technique with my own students, I have almost pulled some of my students to the ground because their grip was so tight!

How do you position your hands on the club? First Club is able to and foremost, it is vital that hinge properly. you grip the club so it can hinge properly during the golf swing. Many of my students who struggle with their grip tend to hold the club too much in the palm of their hands. To check your placement, hold the club in your left hand, straight out from your belt buckle so that the club is parallel to the ground. If you are unable to hinge the club via your wrist to around a 90-degree angle, or if it seems uncomfortable to do so, you are gripping the club too much in your palm. In the photo above, I am able to hinge the club because I am gripping it more in the base of my fingers and not in the palm.

How tight do you hold the club? Notice I said hold. Some golfers tend to hear “grip” and want to choke the life out of the club. I’ve had students grip the club so tight that I can see the white under their fingernails. If your grip is too tight, your bigger muscles tend to tighten up as well. This will cause you to lift the club to the top of your swing and not hinge properly.

Precision: The ability to repeat your grip every single time takes practice. Humans are creatures of habit; the more often we repeat something, the more likely it will become habitual. Developing a precise grip doesn’t require you to be on the golf course or driving range. I tell my junior golfers that when they are at home watching TV, they should pull out their wedge and hold it. This is a great tip for every golfer to remember. 3

Your index finger and thumb should form a “V” shape. My grip (photo 2 below) is an example of a neutral grip. The “V” in your left hand should be directly pointed between your chin (photo 2) and right shoulder. If the “V” tactic doesn’t seem to work for you, then you can use your knuckles as a guide. In a proper left-hand grip, you should only be able to see two knuckles. Comparably, the “V” in your right hand (photo 3 on right) should point toward your chin and only one knuckle should be visible. My Right hand “V” points toward my chin.

n elite girls golf program will launch in June at Shamrock Hills Golf Course. Shamrock Hills has partnered with Boost Physical Therapy and Sports Performance Clinic to create this very unique program. The golf performance program, taught by a some of the best KC area PGA professionals, golf coaches and physical therapist, is designed for junior girl golfers to not only give young women more playing time, but to improve their golf performance. If you are or know an “Amateur Girl” golfer between the ages of 15 and 20 this is a program that you should take a serious look. The brainchild of Program Director, Ernie Wasmer MS, PT, who said, “We have worked closely with the MSHSAA and local girls' coaches to be certain that eligibility and amateur status is maintained. All participants will interact with local golf professionals, coaches and sport performance specialists. The Performance Programs will be conducted by well qualified staff members whose interests go beyond simply playing the great game of golf.” To accomplish the program’s goals, Wasmer says, “Each week we will offer an instructional program dealing with various aspects of golf. For example, topics for the ‘Instructional Program Phase’ will include pre-round exercises, off-season and in-season exercises, importance of general fitness to include strength, core stability and flexibility as related to golf, swing analysis presentation, putting instruction and drills, short game instruction and drills, and emphasis on golfing etiquette.” The Performance Program will be a “Two-Phase Approach.” First, as mentioned above, the “Instructional Phase” and second, the “On-Course Phase.” The initial competition will be flighted as to the estimated score or GIHN number that is listed on the registration form. Each of the following weeks, an “accumulative” score will determine into which flight the girl will be placed. The girl may be moved from one flight to another as their scores indicate. In addition, there will be an “Open Flight.” This flight will be available to any girl. The goal with the “Open Flight” is to provide a more advanced level of competition. Program Cost: The Elite Program includes the eight (8) green fees at Shamrock Hills, guaranteed four (4) individual one on one Sports Performance Sessions with Boost Professionals. Boost will provide pre-round and post-round fitness programs in cooperation with the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) program. The Boost Performance Program will provide education and instruction in golf related exercises, warm-up exercises, body mechanics and injury prevention. The fee for the Elite Program is $164. Daily Agenda — Daily Instruction 8 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. Specific topics related to the mental and/or physical components of golf. During the “Instruction Phase,” a staff member will discuss and demonstrate a specific topic. On-course play begins 8:48 a.m. (modified shotgun start), flighted for 9-hole competition. Wasmer says, “Our goal is to finish the 9-hole competition in 2 hours and 30 minutes. League Dates: The league will meet and play on Mondays: June 4, 11, 18, 25 and July 2, 9, 16 and 23. An 18-hole (flighted) tournament will be held during the July 23 round with a modified shotgun start. This is a great opportunity for junior girl golfers who want to excel by learning the game of golf from some of KC’s best instructors. Interested junior golfers should enroll by May 25. Golf Trick Shot Artists Go Viral

Wyandotte County Open. This year, he’s the No. 1 player on the KCKCC golf team, while the 17-year-old Clark attends classes at Brighton Academy and plays golf for Christ Prep Academy in Lenexa, KS. He will enroll at KCKCC in the fall. But back to the trick shots. Clark first started an Instagram account in the fall of 2016, then teamed up with Morris in December to create gm__ golf. “Basically, we both could juggle pretty good, so we posted a couple of shots and got maybe 30 views,” says Clark. “Literally that same day, Micah was chopping wood using a golf swing with an ax and I said, ‘Hey, I’m going to record you.’ Two days later, we posted it on Instagram and it went viral, 300,000 hits or more.”

ad it not been for a holein-one, Garrett Clark might never have gotten into golf. His cousin, Micah Morris, got into the game only after buying a set of used clubs at a pawn shop. Today, Clark and Morris are social media stars. Their trick golf shots are seen weekly @gm__golf/Instagram by hundreds of thousands if not millions on Instagram, U-Tube and other websites, as well as ESPN Sports Center’s Top 10, the Golf Channel and other over the air channels. It all started innocently enough on July 8, 2013. “I hated golf, but some of my neighborhood buddies and I decided to go play golf at the 6-hole junior course at Sunflower Hills,” said Clark who lives in the Piper area of Kansas City, KS. “After six holes, we were tied, so we decided to hold a playoff. It was an 85-yard hole, and I hit a 7-iron and made a hole-in-one. My focus on golf went from zero to 110. 24

I literally quit soccer that day. The only reason I play golf was because of that holein-one.” Shortly thereafter, Morris decided to get into the game. “I went to a pawn shop and bought a set of used clubs for $45,” said Morris who was living on a farm north of Guthrie, OK, at the time. “We had about 45 acres, and they became my driving range.” Fast forward to 2016. After working three years for his father’s construction company in Guthrie, Morris had earned a golf scholarship in 2015 to Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC), while Clark was moving up the ladder in junior golf. Last year, Clark won three Kansas City Junior tournaments in a row and the Hurricane tournament where he shot 72-68 at Sycamore Ridge Golf Course. Morris, meanwhile, was winning a Jayhawk Conference designated tournament at Colbert Hills in Manhattan, KS, and finishing runner-up in the very competitive

From there, @gm__golf on Instagram took off as the duo began creating a bevy of trick shots, many on a 911-square-foot carpeted putting surface in the back yard. After six months, they had 3,000-4,000 followers and, within a month and a half, 10,000 in August of 2017. Their word was spread even farther by a trip to the PGA Golf Show in Orlando this past January, and today, it boasts 325 posts and 29,600 followers — and growing. “We have had more than 500 million views when you calculate the entire reach of our videos from social media to TV,” Clark said in an interview in early April. “We did an interview April 2 for a South Korean TV station, and this week alone, we have been approached from social media sources to reach another 500 million.” “We’re probably best known for our bank shots No. 1,” says Clark. “Dunk shots are No. 2, Stingers No. 3 and Golf Pong No. 4.” A dunk shot lands in the hole on the fly; stingers are close-ups of super lowrising drives hit off tees; and Golf Pong requires hitting a ball into a Solo cup (usually indoor). One of the latest shots, in which Clark banks a 4-iron off four blocks and dunks it in the cup, drew an additional 8,000 viewers (see photo upper right). “With South Korean TV broadcasting it, we have no idea what the count will be.”

Just to prove there’s also some ability, Clark announces on one video that he’s going to birdie the par 5, 505-yard 11th hole at Sunflower Hills with (only) a 3-wood — and then goes out and does it, chipping his third shot to within a couple of feet — nearly an eagle!

2 4 Among the most popular shots are one in which the ball banks six times before rolling in a hole; a towel shot in which Clark juggled a ball and Morris flips it backhandedly with a towel into a hole 45 feet away; a backward between the legs shot that bounces over Clark’s head into the hole; a chip shot between the legs of KCK buddy, Stephen Castaneda, that banks over his head and into a hole; and even, a chip shot by Clark to Morris balancing on one foot on a slack line while backhanding a towel shot 30 feet into the hole — a shot that leaves the cousins laughing uproariously. Trick shots aren’t reserved to the outdoors. One shot is chipped down one flight of stairs, blown around a corner by a fan and then down another flight of stairs into a Solo cup. Bank shots off interior walls into cups are common place. Another is a blind chip shot over a bed and into a cup, and there’s one shot in which a wedge shot that is chipped back and forth between the duo then goes into a cup. “One day, I came home and Garrett was standing on my kitchen table hitting balls out my kitchen window,” says his mother and home-school teacher, Tami Clark. One shot was so spectacular, it was not believed. Clark hit a 4-iron that banked off a wedge held by sister Hannah and rolled into the hole. “That video bumped our followers up by 5,000 but HouseOfHighlights.com

Shots are recorded on iPhones, so new shots can be created almost anywhere and anytime — such as a 40-foot putt down a motel hallway and then down a flight of steps into a cup. “We try to be as creative and original as possible,” says Clark. “It has to look cool and be original, creative, different. Dunk shots, which we are known for, are exceptionally hard. A lot of times the ball will hit in the hole and bounce out.” Patience is also a virtue. Most shots take many tries; some like the outdoor towel shot several hours. “We really want to be the youngest people in golf making a big difference on growing the game,” said Clark. “Our philosophy on life in general is based on my dad, who has raised me to ‘operate from the laws of attraction, affluence and abundance’ and to avoid at all costs ‘scarcity mentality.’ Our mission is to make the game and our lives as attractive as we can and not in an artificial sense. Just be authentic on and off the course.” You must see the new video trick shots that are posted each Tuesday @gm__golf on Instagram. With a couple of hundred tricks already recorded, one might guess there’s nothing left. Not so, says Clark. “New ideas are not as hard as I thought.” 

After 75 Rounds Your Old Wedge Can Increase Roll-Out by 18 Feet!

s it time for you to look at getting new wedges? How do you know if you need new wedges and are your current wedges good enough? These are good questions, so let’s look at finding the answers to these questions.

Wedges are the “Scoring Clubs,” so it’s important to not only know how to use them well, but also when you’ve used them so much that they’re no longer helping you. In fact, your wedges could be working against you. Titleist recently did research testing that really gives a good indication on how a wedge holds up to everyday play. When hitting a wedge into a green, we obviously think about how far we want the ball to carry to make it stop near the hole. That is just one part of a good shot. We also need to know how far that wedge shot will “roll-out” before it puts on the brakes. Titleist has done testing which shows that the more our wedges are played, the “roll-out” increases. With wedges, “roll-out” or increased distance is not a good thing. This is due to fresh versus worn grooves on the club. 1. If we assume that with fresh grooves, the ball will roll-out about 10 additional feet after hitting the ground, how does wear impact the roll-out? 2. After 75 rounds that same wedge will now increase roll-out by 18 feet. 3. After 125 rounds, the ball will now roll-out 24 feet. WOW! 4. That means, if I am going to hit a wedge shot over a bunker in the front of the green, I need to figure the carry of the shot, but also the 24 feet roll-out. If it rolls out too much, I could roll over the green and into the back bunker. But, I thought it was a good shot! Well, it could have been, but your worn clubs are not as good as last year! How many rounds do you play a year? • If you average playing twice a week and you play nine months out of the year, you are playing 72 rounds per year. So, after just one year, you need to allow for an additional 8 feet of roll-out. • After playing our wedges for just a year and a half, we need to allow for an additional 14-feet of roll-out on the green versus when the wedges were new. That’s hard to do for any golfer. I hope the greens are big enough! Wow, if I want to decrease my scores, it seems like it might be best to look at new wedges. How do we choose the correct wedges for our swing? Schedule time with your golf course professional and see about a wedge fitting. He or she has the tools and knowledge to help. We find it is imperative that we fit outside to be able to see what the ball does in real life situations. Your game and money are worth seeking out a professional to help find the correct wedges for “you;” that work best for your game. Remember there are many choices when it comes to golf clubs, so hit and get fitted before you buy!

The Wear on Your Wedge Grooves Affects Your Spin Control The following is information about wedge testing provided by the Titleist Vokey R&D team who tested three levels of groove wear using a proprietary wedge robot at the Manchester Lane test facility. The results? Wedges with fresh grooves lead to more precise shots. What Are The Effects of Groove Wear? Titleist (Vokey R&D team) tested wedges (using a proprietary wedge robot) played for 125 rounds, 75 rounds and a new wedge with fresh grooves.

Golfers encounter a variety of conditions with their wedges that lead to the groove edge wearing down over time. Every golfer should evaluate their wedges and grooves at about 75 rounds of play to get the best spin performance. The Leading Causes of Groove Wear ● Regular practice and play creates normal wear and tear ● Bunker shots expose the face to millions of small pebbles and rocks ● Sandy lies, debris on the golf ball, rocks and bag chatter ● Use of range balls or other hard covered balls Inspecting Your Wedges Wedges may look fine but may not be delivering maximum spin. You should inspect your wedges for groove wear every 75 rounds. Start by inspecting the overall physical condition of the wedge and grooves. Preparing the Course for Tournament Play

he arrival of spring brings a flurry of activities to the golf course as play increases, so does the volume of work for the superintendent and staff who keep the course in tip-top shape. Tournaments bring hundreds of participants to a course and heavy traffic, so it’s an excellent opportunity to showcase a courses’ excellent conditions. Getting turf into tournament condition while preparing for such events and increased play takes planning. Superintendents must have a strategy and contingency plan in order to meet the superior course conditions expected by tournament attendees and club members. Not only can the additional traffic damage turf, but the disruptions and practices a superintendent must engage in to prepare greens for events can be potentially harmful to the turf. To schedule greens to peak during tournaments and special events, a superintendent must carefully plan backwards to perfect application timing, irrigation and course management. Attaining firm and fast playing conditions without harming turf health is a priority and a challenge. To do so, a golf course superintendent should schedule a complete NPK liquid fertilizer program enhanced with micronutrients and iron every 7–10 days, beginning two to three weeks prior to the date of the event. hear a lot of golfers say, “I just want to get the ball out of the bunker.” This comment normally comes after they’ve landed in a greenside bunker and then had the unfortunate experiences of leaving the ball in the bunker shot after shot. Everyone hates when that happens!

Becoming a good bunker player has much to do with understanding the correct part of the wedge that you want to use in bunkers, which has a direct correlation with ball placement in your stance. In bunkers, the more a player can engage the “bounce” of the club (the sole of the club), the less likely the player will leave a ball in the bunker after their shot. To help engage the “bounce” during your bunker shot, try playing the ball way forward in your stance — basically where you would set-up to hit your driver. This will help engage the bounce of the club and not the leading edge, which promotes digging and is the cause of a lot of those fat bunker shots that remain in the bunker or rocket across the green. Don’t play the ball further back in your stance, it drastically increases the chance that the leading edge will engage the sand and not the bounce of the club. The red highlighted area (in photo above) represents the leading edge of the sand wedge. The green highlighted area is where “bounce” is located. When you hit a bunker shot, the club (wedge) should open up, engaging the bounce thus making bunker shots much easier. If the leading edge enters the sand first, the club digs-in and often causes those dreaded fat shots.

With the ball placed forward in your stance, it is much easier to use the bounce of the wedge correctly, therefore making successful bunker shots. The picture on the right shows the ball too far back in the stance. This tends to result in a steeper angle of attack, which can cause the leading edge to engage the sand first, resulting in inconsistent (poor) bunker shots. Finding the Right Shaft for Your Game

hink you know a lot about golf shafts? Think again! Did you know, there are no standards for shaft flex? It can be different for every manufacturer. Playability tolerances in each category of stiff or regular shafts are vast! To understand this better, I spoke with several shaft industry leaders: Fujikura’s Sales Manager Chad Embrey; Victor Afable, CEO of VA Composites; Gawain Robertson, owner of ACCRA Shafts; and Nick Sherburne, co-founder of Club Champion. The only goal is to find the best combination of components to lower your scores. Club Champion offers over 35,000 hittable shaft and head combinations, making Sherburne an expert on this topic. “The industry taught us the clubhead is the engine of the golf club because that’s “what hits the ball,” but the shaft is far more important,” Sherburne says. “With thousands of shaft options and no industry ‘flex’ standards, it’s nearly impossible for golfers to find the shaft that performs best for them without professional help. It’s important to find

a skilled fitter with a launch monitor to find the right shaft to maximize your performance.” According to Robertson, “Terms like stiff or regular flex are so generalized, they essentially mean nothing. Different sections of the shaft can be totally different flexes.” Manufacturers design shafts for three different sections: 1) butt (the grip end), 2) midsection and 3) tip sections. They can produce shafts that are soft in the middle, stiff at the tip, and medium in the butt or any combination imaginable. Robertson adds, “Clubfitters understand the profiles of shafts. If a player needs something with a softer tip section and a stiffer butt section, they know which shaft has that profile. Club Champion’s understanding of how to fit golfers is an

integral part of any club being successful in a player’s hands.” Embrey adds, “Flex specifications are impacted by torque — a misunderstood shaft specification. Many golfers believe lower torque means better shafts, which is not necessarily true. Seasoned fitters will often choose a higher torque shaft for smoother, slower swingers to help get the ball up in the air faster and create spin. Lower torque is better for players that swing aggressively.” Afable believes custom fitting is very important. “Shafts with various weights and flexes react differently to individual heads. Some retail stores sell shafts off a wall. The problem is, they may or may not be the right shaft for you. Furthermore, the builder who installs the shaft may not know how to trim it correctly, which is where things can go wrong. It is essential to find a highly skilled fitter, who understands the difference and are trained to properly fit and install shafts.” There is an enormous difference between club manufacturers’ stock shafts and the high-end aftermarket models Tour professionals play. Typically, cheaper shafts are made from lower grade materials. They’re manufactured in larger quantities in places like Mexico and Vietnam, which often

means watered down tolerances. Exotic materials from Japan maintain very tight tolerances, not only for weight or flex, but straightness and roundness of the shaft. When a shaft is not rolled or manufactured properly, there will be gaps within the layers of graphite, which can really affect performance. Embrey adds, “Mostly, OEM shafts do what they’re intended to do, but they’re not designed to dial players in.” (OEM is an acronym that stands for “original equipment manufacturer.”) Club Champion uses a unique coupling system allowing golfers to hit any combination of heads and shafts. They find combinations that solve a golfer’s problems. Many clubfitters use clubfitting carts provided by club manufacturers; however, they are unable to mix-and-match across manufacturers carts to determine the ideal combination. Club Champion offers hundreds of shafts, many not available through most other fitters and retailers. Sherburne believes golfers should start thinking about what value they put on

their golf game. “Sometimes people come in and say, they’ll just get something off the shelf because spending $500 to get an extra 20 yards isn’t worth it. But, that 20 extra yards can be two less clubs into the green. Hitting pitching wedge instead of 8-iron, you’re going to hit more greens. I can almost guarantee that 20 yards is going to knock two strokes off your handicap.” Club Champion delivers a Tour-quality fitting producing longer, more accurate shots with a nearly 100% satisfaction rate. Bunkers — Love `em, Hate `em

he dreaded sand traps (bunkers) are a headache for all of us. Golfers hate hitting into them and hate hitting out of them even more. Golf course maintenance crews hate raking, mowing and repairing them. Bunkers slow down play, add strokes to players game, and take more money to maintain than most golfers think. With so much hatred, why do courses even have them? Bunkers were not necessarily an original part of the design with the first golf courses built. Links courses in Scotland were usually built or played along coastlines or in low lying areas. As sand from the coast blew across the course, it collected in low areas and, eventually, were adopted as “hazards” that golfers were forced to play from — as it lies. In those days, sheep grazed on the course trimming the grass. When the sheep would seek shelter from weather and wind, they often burrowed into low areas on the course and eventually wore out those areas down to the native sandy soil. As golf became more popular, sand traps where integrated into course designs and eventually called bunkers because of the similarity in deepness to bunkers used during warfare.

I suspect that few golfers know today’s costs associated with maintaining sand bunkers. Costs include the machines, tools, sand, drainage, liners, fuel and labor. Every bunker is different, and each requires different amounts of labor attention. Machines, such as new riding bunker rakes, cost between $15,000 - $20,000. Other tools are also required to maintain bunkers, such as shovels and rakes. The bunker rakes golfers find around bunkers (although seem to rarely use) cost between $10 - 20 per rake. Courses with 18 holes are known to have 200 - 400 rakes. Riverbased sand can be inexpensive, but sands such as, pure white sands are often manufactured and ground from various materials, which can be expensive. I’m sure, you’ve noticed that all bunker sand-types can become contaminated with silt or soil that compacts and discolors — yuk! White sand is more prone to contamination. We often replace bunker sand every 7-10 years, regardless of color or cost. Believe it or not, good bunker drainage is important as players want to be able to play quickly after rain storms. We strive for consistent conditions; dry sand and bunkers that drain well. But, drainage clogs often, so repairs are constantly required. The liners underneath the sand have become increasing necessary to assist with drainage and to hold sand in place on the large sloped edges or faces. Over time, liners fail or deteriorate, need repaired or replaced. 38

And then the labor — a mandatory factor to maintain every bunker requires — weeding, raking, trimming, repairing, designing and installing. I don’t think they’ve created a robot yet to rake bunkers, but maybe robots will be an addition to help with bunkers in the future — at a steep cost. Every course is different; a different number of bunkers in different shapes, sizes and locations. Some courses have hundreds of bunkers, while others have few to none. Courses often measure their bunkers by the square-foot to calculate the amount of materials needed for them. Every course has different size budgets and/or demands for conditions. How much does it cost to “refurbish” a bunker? Well, that’s likely a loaded question. I’ll refer back to all the factors and costs associated with bunkers previously mentioned. But on average, sand costs between $1-3 per square-foot. Liners cost about $2-3 per square-foot. If an average bunker is 2,000 square feet. It can cost between $6,000 and $12,000 to renovate just one bunker. Courses can have on average between 1 to 3 acres of bunkers. Renovations can vary from hundreds of thousands of dollars to millions. An average golf course can spend nearly $500,000 on complete renovations with new drainage, liner and sand. If bunkers are renovated “in-house” by the maintenance staff, the renovation progress takes longer than if it’s hired-out to a company. Courses that do the bunker work in-house are usually able to complete 7-10 per year with the cost to complete the work being possibly less expensive; however, the labor and cost is spread out over 4-5 years depending on the number bunkers that course has. After 4-5 years, some of those first renovated bunkers are again in need of repair. It’s a never-ending cycle for golf course maintenance. Because of all these expenses associated with bunkers, courses are removing bunkers from their design, trying to save some money any way they can. Most golfers and superintendents agree that sand bunkers can make a golf course look amazing, but no matter how well the bunkers look, golfers still don’t want to hit their ball into one — me included!  Jacob Rockhold interned at Baltusrol Golf Club in 2012. BONNER SPRINGS, KS — Sunflower Hills 18-hole championship golf course plays at 7,001 from the back tees and has earned a reputation as one of the foremost and longest golf courses in the Kansas City area. It boasts one of the largest putting greens in the entire Midwest, providing the ability for the golfer to practice putts for all degrees of difficulty. There are also chipping and pitching greens and a practice bunker. Amenities include a full service pro-shop, grill area, and PGA Professionals providing lessons and clubfitting. Sunflower Hills also offers one of the best junior golf facilities in the Kansas City area. The Junior golf course features six holes with three sets of tees. This is a scenic course and is extremely popular among Kansas City area golfers. The course is located adjacent to the Kansas Speedway, Village West and is just minutes from downtown Kansas City, MO. KANSAS CITY, MO — Minor Park Golf Course has long been known as is one of the busiest courses in town — and for good reason. The golf course is popular with golfers of all ages who enjoy its wide, wellgroomed Zoysia fairways and medium sized Bentgrass greens. The course layout is ideal for the beginner and the more experienced golfer who wants an enjoyable relaxing round of golf. The course offers golfers many different shot challenges at greens that are smaller compared today’s newer courses, but the design requires accurate approach shots or a really good short game. A par 70 course that plays 5,570 yards from the tips, so long drives are not as necessary as accuracy in landing shots in fairways and on greens. Large mature trees line the fairways providing plenty of shade on those hot summer days. However, the trees can also cost you on the scorecard if you’re on the opposing side. If you’re a walker, this is a good choice for your next round. While there are plenty of rolling hills, valleys and doglegs to entertain you, it’s a very walkable layout. Or, take the scenic route in a riding cart, it’s just as much fun. Minor Park offers a lighted driving range and large practice greens for putting and chipping, pro shop and snack bar. USGA Championship Qualifiers Tee Off This Month

s the golf season officially arrives, the Kansas City Golf Association (KCGA) hopes players around the metropolitan area are gearing up for the many opportunities available over the next few months. This time of year is the busiest and most exciting for the Kansas City Golf Association. On top of the KCGA’s regional championships and junior golf tours, the KCGA holds many USGA Qualifiers throughout the summer and into the fall season, giving local golfers an opportunity to qualify for a chance of a lifetime — to play in a USGA Championship.

This season, the USGA will hold 15 championships across the country. A few of the well-known USGA Championships include: the U.S. Open, the U.S. Women’s Open, the U.S. Junior Amateur, the U.S. Women’s Amateur, and the Inaugural U.S. Senior Women’s Open Championship. Fans of the game will remember Brooks Koepka’s dominating win at last year’s U.S. Open at Erin Hills to claim the championships at 16-under. There are two opportunities through the KCGA to qualify for the 118 U.S. Open Championship held this year at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, NY. The first U.S. Open Local occurs on May 9 at Wichita Country Club in Wichita, KS. The field is limited to 78 players with everyone fighting for limited spots to move on to the next step — a sectional qualifier. The second and final U.S. Open Local Qualifier will be held at the Golf Club at Creekmoor in Raymore, MO, on May 14. The field for this qualifier is limited to 90 participants. There is no age limit for golfers who wish to enter either qualifier, but there is a handicap index limit of 1.4. Entry fee for the U.S. Open Championship qualifier is $200. This is a one-time fee that includes entry into the U.S. Open Local qualifier as well as the U.S. Open Championship for those who qualify. Golfers who qualify at a local qualifier will then move on to a sectional qualifier and vie 40

for a chance to move on to the championship. For those who distinguish themselves above the rest at a sectional qualifier, the U.S. Open Championship will take place June 14-17 in New York.

The KCGA encourages all golfers who fit the eligibility criteria to enter the USGA Local Qualifiers — it could be the opportunity of a lifetime to go on and compete in a USGA Championships at prestigious golf clubs around the country. The KCGA helps specifically with 12 qualifiers throughout the months of May through October, but there are many other qualifiers across the country. he U.S. Kids Golf Local Kansas City Tour offers one-day tournaments that are age-appropriate competitions and family fun. Giving parents the chance to experience tournament golf with their young player. Parents are encouraged to caddie during the one-day events where players learn how to shoot low scores because they compete on a course scaled to fit their age and ability. With more than 700 tournaments in 50 markets, players learn how to compete without having to travel far. The Local Kansas City Tour is designed for the beginning competitive golfer, as each event provides a fun environment at which kids can develop their skills. Two-day tournaments, such as Regional Championships, are ranked by Junior Golf Scoreboard and are the natural next step for competitive junior golfers. At each level, players may earn “Priority Status” in hopes of qualifying for the World Championship held annually in Pinehurst, N.C. Averaging more than 1,200 players from 40 countries since 2013, players vie for the title of World Champion in 13 age divisions. U.S. Kids Golf also conducts the Teen World Championship for players 13-18 years old, as well as the European Championship in Scotland.

Instruction for ages 7-18 include: Full Swing, Short Game, Putting and On-Course Instruction. Limited class sizes with student-teacher ratio of 5 to 1 or less. Personal Attention Is Our Specialty!
