Annoying Golf Habits

Wanna be the ball? Be our guest. Just please, please, please don’t be that golfer.

D

o you know a golfer with those litany of quirks, mannerisms and maddening routines that no one else can stand? Well, here’s our list of the top 10 most annoying golf habits, ranked for your displeasure. Pass this list along to that golfer. Every golfer should avoid the following. 10. Score-keeping on Your Fingers: Really! Must you stand on the green, counting on your digits like a kindergartener to calculate an eight? Your playing partners have moved to the next tee — maybe you need a pocket count clicker!

PLAY FREE GOLF for 2 Months JOIN NOW with a 12-month contract and only pay for 10 months. This is a limited time offer, for a limited number of new memberships. New members only, some restrictions apply. Call the Pro Shop for full details.

9. Cliché Spouting: Hit a house! Never up, never in! Get Up! Get In! Mash Potato! Endless babble does not make the player feel any better about that last bad shot. So, keep talking and someone in your group is liable to hurt you. 8. First-Tee Excuse Making: So, you barely slept, you slipped a disc, haven’t swung a club since high school or last year. That’s a shame, but guess what — no one cares! 7. Poker-Chip Ball-Marking: You know the guy — he uses a manhole cover for a ball-mark and then asks, “Is that monstrosity in your line?” He may as well leave the ball on the green — it’s smaller! Here’s a dime or quarter — keep it! 6. No Ball-Marker: For the guy who leaves their ball on the green no matter where it lies. Here, take a quarter. A dime. A penny. Almost any coin will do — mark your damn ball! 5. Taking 5 Clubs to Your Ball: The cart is two feet from your ball — why do you need to pull five clubs from your bag, laser the distance, then pick one club from the ground, drop it, take another, and then finally, after an eturnity, hit the shot? Get a Grip Man!

4. Phone Alcoholic: Maybe a surgically implanted ear-bud or a phone holster for your grips? That way, you could talk endlessly, or read those precious texts and emails even while you swing. News Flash — we’re golfing today! 3. Excessive Practice Swinging: Practice makes perfect, but not in your case. You’ve proved as much by taking nine swings before each shot then laying sod over your ball. Practice on the range please!

1. And The Number One Most Annoying Golf Habit. Playing Unready Cart Path Only Golf: For the guy who is walking from your cart on the cart path to your ball with no clubs — empty-handed, back and forth. You’d spare yourself some effort and us behind you a lot of anguish, if you brought a few clubs with you the first time around. We’d prefer you became the guy on #5 above.

2. Insisting on Playing the Tips: Sure. We get it. Even though you can barely break 100, you’re taking on the back tees at 7,600 yards because you want to “see the whole course.” Don’t worry. You will. You just won’t see us. We’ll be seven holes ahead.

Pay It Forward during 2017!

G

ood News — we’ve all made it to 2017, so Happy New Year! Remember the year 2000, and a problem known as Y2K? The Millennium bug or Y2K bug arose because computer programmers believed a year with the final two digits ending in zeros made 2000 indistinguishable from 1900. The assumption was that all computers on the planet would crash and that would be the end of life as we knew it, but nothing unusual happened and life went on as normal. The next end of the World was all set to happen on December 21, 2012, when the Mayan calendar came to an end. Some claimed that it meant the end of the World. Those predictions were thankfully — wrong. Like the Y2K panic, Mayan calendar scare and the 2017 presidential elections — there will always be those who find the worst in a situation and sensationalize claims of the end of life, as we know it. While I’m not a philosopher or evangelist, perhaps it’s time we all practice a “New Beginning” with 2017. Sure, there is, and probably always will be, something wrong or tragic happening on our planet and to the people on it. That is exactly why avid golfers play golf — to escape from the day-to-day stresses of whatever they may experience, and for a few hours, simply enjoy the great outdoors. When we hit a great shot now-and-then, we’re motivated to try the game again another day and, maybe, hit a few more great shots. The “new beginning” for golfers might be to vow to play more often, let go of the stress, enjoy friendships and realize the beauty a day on a golf course provides. Then, “Pay it Forward,” share a day of stress-free golfing experiences with someone else. Many courses offer discount golf rates to our veterans — hats off to those courses. This year, I would like to see police officers, firefighters and all first responders receive that same generosity. Imagine for a minute, a world without police officers. Scary thought! On December 14, 2016, I heard a news program state that as of that date, 64 police officers were killed in the line of duty. That’s horrible! As a country, we must stand up for those who protect our lives while we sleep all warm and cozy each night. My brother and a best friend are retired police officers, so I have a personal connection, but that connection aside, I go out of my way to thank all first responders every chance I get — as should we all. As golfers and golf course operators, we can do our part in thanking our first responders for their service by offering them the same stress-free environment that we enjoy — a few hours playing golf. We will do our part; this magazine will provide, “Free of Charge,” a listing of every golf course that offers discounts to first responders, along with the details of the offer. The listing will remain in each issue for the next 12 months and for years to come. We will also contact each police department within our distribution area — Metro Kansas City, Lake of the Ozarks and Branson — and inform them of the participating courses. (Courses; please email me the details.) As with any profession or job, there are those who love what they do and excel, those who become complacent and those who could just care less. I am grateful for our first responders who love what they do, as is the majority. As golfers, we play the game with integrity and love our time golfing. I believe, it’s time we all show our appreciation to those who serve and protect with integrity. Perhaps sharing golfing experiences will offer all a “New Beginning” in 2017 and give our police officers a slice of refreshing stress-free time.

Alvamar Turns Private

lvamar Golf Club of Lawrence, KS, will become a private club for 2017. The management company announced that as of November 7, 2016, the Alvamar Golf Club will become a private facility. Alvamar is now in the process of gutting and rebuilding its clubhouse, which will include a new wellness and fitness center and pool. Alvamar once included an 18-hole public course, an 18-hole private club and two clubhouses. Now with one clubhouse, the golf courses will transition from the former 36 holes to 27 holes with new routing and renovations for a featured 18-hole and a 9-hole course. Alvamar says, “Look for a rebranding with an exciting new name in the near future.” This could be good news for Eagle Bend Golf Course — now, the only 18-hole public course in Lawrence, KS, and the Orchards Golf and FootGolf the only 9-hole public course. With two private clubs in Lawrence, Alvamar and Lawrence Country Club, which previously was the only private club there, public golfers will need to venture towards Overland Park, KS, to find good tee times and a change of scenery. Tomahawk Hills, Sunflower Hills and Dub’s Dread golf courses are also short drives from Lawrence and good alternatives.

S

Stone Canyon Golf Club Receives 2016 Best of Blue Springs Award tone Canyon Golf Club was selected a 2016 Best of Blue Springs Award winner in the Local Business category by the Blue Springs Award Program, which honors the achievement. The presentation took place in November.

GreatLife Golf KC who now owns the course, decided in 2016, enough with the Bentgrass fairways, let’s go with Zoysia. Work stripping in Zoysia began during September of 2016. As of December 2016, Royal Meadows GM/Head Golf Professional Tony Highfill says, “We have stripped in Zoysia on most of the back nine —seven holes. We have seeded rye on the rest of the course to keep it playable during the transition period.” Highfill says, plans are to continue work (weather permitting) and complete the remainder of the course in the spring 2017.”

This photo of the Bentgrass fairways was taken on August 25, 2015. It shows the challenges of maintaining Bentgrass fairways during hot summer months. During much of the 2016 season, the fairways were similar. Zoysia grasses thrive in heat and will be a welcomed change.

“I feel this is the best thing that could be happening to Royal Meadows since the 2002 renovation converting from 27 holes to 18 holes,” said Highfill. “The Zoysia will not only make it much more economical to operate, but, additionally, the improved playing surface will make it one of the most fun golf courses in the area. “Meanwhile, in-season, the greens are in excellent shape and the course is very much playable.”

Each year, the Blue Springs Award Program identifies companies that it believes achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. The award recognizes local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and the community. These exceptional companies help make the Blue Springs, MO, area a great place to live, work and play. www.StoneCanyonGolfClub.com

Royal Meadows Converts to Zoysia Fairways

R

oyal Meadows Golf Club, built in the 1930s, has a storied history and several owners since its opening. Originally, a Blue Grass golf course, its 18-hole public golf course layout was completely redesigned in 2002 by the owner of that time period and fairways were converted to Bentgrass. The Bentgrass fairways ultimately proved very difficult and costly to maintain.

8

Located near Arrowhead and Kansas City Royals’ Stadiums and just 10 minutes east of downtown Kansas City, Royal Meadows is a landmark course offering large undulating greens, contoured fairways, three ponds and four sets of Zoysia tee boxes. The course is a fair challenge for any level of golfer and offers very affordable green fee rates. For more details, visit www.royalmeadowsgolfclub.com.

TaylorMade to Release Two New M1 Drivers for 2017

T

aylorMade Golf announced its release of the new 2017 series M1 drivers in December 2016. TaylorMade’s M family of drivers have pushed the boundaries of golf club engineering with the next generation of M metalwoods, highlighted by the new M1™ and M2™ drivers, fairways and hybrids.

]

by Bill Cromwell, Publisher

Look Cool Practicing Putting with RoboCup Ball Return

O

kay, if you want to speed up your putting practice, look cool practicing or are just too darn lazy to retrieve your ball out of the cup — then RoboCup is for you. RoboCup is the only ball return device designed to work on every practice green with a practice or full-depth cup.

Last year, TaylorMade’s M1 engineers successfully endeavored to combine the perfect blend of form and function in the club’s aesthetics and club alignment, focusing on the utilization of new materials like never before. In 2017, TaylorMade is elevating performance once again by focusing on materials and geometry designed to deliver improved launch conditions, increased personalization and more forgiveness for every golfer.

Automatically shoots the ball right back to you.

C se arb ad ctio onju n o com sta n bl sol pos e s e ite lid wi er th s.

carbon-composite crown

Like its predecessor, the M1 in both 460cc and 440cc drivers has a carbon-composite crown and another carbon-composite section in the sole to create more discretionary weight. That allowed designers to lower the Center of Gravity (COG). The 2017 M1 has sliding weight tracks similar to those of the original 2015 model M, but the weights in the new version club are heavier and the tracks are now larger. The side-adjustment weight to promote a draw or a fade is now 15 grams, and the other weight is 12 grams, which helps adjust the height and spin of the shot. Generally, the new M1 drivers feature a COG lower than the original model’s, and the moment of inertia (MOI) is higher. TaylorMade says, “The new M1 combines the adjustability of the original with the forgiveness of the M2.” The M1 drivers will be available in stores on January 27 and retail for $499.99. The new M1 460 driver will be available in adjustable lofts of 8.5, 9.5, 10.5 and 12 degrees (left-handed in 9.5 and 10.5 degrees). The smaller M1 440 driver (right-handed only) will come with lofts of 8.5, 9.5 and 10.5 degrees. TaylorMade’s M1 line of metalwoods will also be available in fairways and rescue/ hybrid clubs. 12

When a putt drops into the hole, RoboCup’s innovative design automatically shoots the ball right back to you. RoboCup runs on four AA batteries and will return the ball to you up to 14 feet or more, depending on green speed. A set of batteries lasts for 12,000 putt returns, making it a longtime golf companion. Combine it with the Caddy Cord, and it’s a golfers personal putt-return caddy — even missed putts shoot right back. The brainchild of Keith Foley (inventor) with Fine Tune Golf, Fort Lauderdale, FL, the portable RoboCup won “Best New Product, 2009” at the PGA Merchandise Show. Designed exclusively for avid golfers, RoboCup empowers consumers to focus on their practice; saving them time, their backs and bringing the fun back to putting. RoboCup works equally well for both indoor and outdoor putting. Foley says, “It is the meticulous quality of RoboCup that has brought success. The technology makes it unlike any option out there.” Foley is also known for his inventions and well-engineered products: the G-Clip and Line-M-Up creations. RoboCup is available online and with retailers Golfsmith and Edwin Watts. RoboCup is conveniently bundled with the new Caddy Cord at a MSRP of $59.95. For additional information, visit www. finetunegolf.com. What we found: Currently RoboCup and Caddy Cord Set Ball Return Robot is 25% Off ($49.95) with Free Shipping at www.finetunegolf.com. 

Kansas City Hall of Fame Inducts Dalgleish, Gault, Ludwig

Late icons honored for contributions on and off the golf course.

T

Editorial by Alan Hoskins

hree Kansas City golf icons whose contributions to the game rivaled or exceeded their exploits on the course are the newest inductees into the Kansas City Golf Hall of Fame.

James Dalgleish, known as “The Father of Kansas City Golf” in the 1920s and 1930s; Marian Gault, who dominated Kansas City women’s golf for two decades; and Bill Ludwig, an outstanding player and contributor to golf associations in Kansas and Missouri for three decades, were inducted in Kansas City Golf Association (KCGA) ceremonies at Milburn Country Club, November 19, 2016. All were inducted posthumously. The Hall of Fame was founded in 2012 as part of the celebration of the KCGA’s Centennial to preserve the past and honor the accomplishments of those who made golf in the Kansas City area so great. The charter class in 2012 was made up of Tom Watson, Stan Thirsk, Leland (Duke) Gibson, Bob Reid, Opal Hill, Miriam Burns (Horn) Tyson and Chester (Chet) Mendenhall. In 2014, they were joined by Bob Stone, Karen (Shull) MacGee and “The Foursome,” a group of African-Americans who integrated the links at Swope Park in March of 1950. “Over the first three classes of inductees, we have recognized amateurs and professionals, men and women, contemporary as well as historic figures, golf administrators and superintendents and players and teachers,” said Carol Gillard, president of the Hall of Fame. “We are very proud that our Hall of Fame is all-inclusive and has recognized the greatest of those who have contributed so much to the enjoyment of our game.” The Class of 2016 Inductees: Bill Ludwig (1930-2016) — The Kansas Match Play champion in 1974 and Missouri Senior Amateur champ in 1991, Ludwig qualified for the U.S. Open in 1973 and, arguably, was Kansas City’s best senior amateur the last two decades of the 20th Century. From 1985-89, he played in four of five U.S. Senior Amateurs. The only year he missed in 1987, he played in the U.S. Senior at Brooklawn and again at Medinah in 1988. In addition, he won the 1994 Phil Cotton Senior, was runner-up twice in the Dawson Invitational, and partnered with Jim Round to win the Missouri Senior Four-Ball in 1995.

14

Inducted into the Missouri Golf Association Hall of Fame in 2008; Ludwig’s off the course contributions included serving on the board of directors of the Missouri Golf Association from 1974-2008 and the KCGA from 1990-2012. In addition, Ludwig was a leader of the USGA’s course and slope rating within the Kansas City and central Missouri areas for more than two decades. Marian Gault (1924-1996) — From 1942 to 1957, Gault dominated women’s golf in Kansas City, winning the Missouri Women’s Amateur in 1952 and 1955, and the Kansas City Women’s Match Play championship six times between 1942 and 1952. She was also Match Play medalist eight times and runner-up three times while accumulating an overall record of 36 wins and 9 losses. An outstanding teacher, Gault was matched-up against one of her students, Karen Schull, in the Missouri Women’s Amateur final in 1962. In the much-heralded finale, the student emerged 2 and 1; one of Gault’s four second place finishes in the event. For 13 years, Gault also led the KCGA’s Junior Girls program. At the time, she assumed it would be for a year or two, but she was so successful in recruiting young players that no one would accept her resignation until she finally called it quits in 1961. A graduate of Southwest High School in 1941, Gault earned degrees in Fine Arts from the University of Arizona in 1945 and the Parsons School of Design in 1948. James Dalgleish (1865-1935) — Emigrating from Scotland in 1896, Dalgleish came to Kansas City from Shinnecock Hills in New York in 2003 and over the next three decades, became nationally known as “The Father of Kansas City Golf.” As founder of the first organization of professional golfers in the area, he was elected as its first president by his peers. Dalgleish began his Kansas City career at the former Evanston Golf Club. When the club secured ground near Swope Park in 1906, he laid out the links. In 1912, he was assigned to carry out the Donald Ross-design of what is now Hillcrest Country Club, a project that took four years to complete. He remained at Hillcrest until 1924. During his career, Dalgelish is credited with 17 course designs from small-town Kansas to three courses within Swope Park including the first free public course in Swope in 1906, the original Swope Park in 1917 and Swope No. 2. He was also owner, designer and professional at St. Andrews at 89th and Summit in 1925 and designed Victory Hills Country Club (now Painted Hills) in 1927. Great Golf Getaways

Leaving a Golf “Legacy” in Arizona Editorial and Photography by John Baccala

B

uilt on what once was a 7,500-acre cattle ranch, the Legacy Golf Club in Phoenix, AZ, may not be the first course that comes to mind when you plan your Arizona golf vacation, but it sure should be on your list. Located just minutes from downtown Phoenix and Sky Harbor International Airport, it may be the most highly-acclaimed golf course you’ve never heard about! Legacy Golf Club was voted Top Public Course in Phoenix by ESPN. com/travel, named #9 in the Top 10 Arizona Golf Resorts in Arizona by readers of the Conde Nast Traveler and named one of the Top 200 Resort Courses in the World by Golfweek magazine. It is a championship-quality course that has played host to several professional tournaments, including the 2000 LPGA Standard Register Ping Classic (won by Charlotta Sorenstam). The Legacy Golf Club has also welcomed numerous celebrity events too, featuring stars of the NFL and NBA and further cementing the course’s “Legacy.” Nestled against South Mountain, The Legacy is a par 71-layout playing anywhere from 5,471 to 6,946 yards. The course features four sets of tees and, yep, 52 sand bunkers! Or, like Legacy General Manager Tony Barten likes to say, 52 “perfectly placed and deep” bunkers. “Those bunkers make choosing the correct tees one of the

16

most crucial choices of your round,” he said. “The Legacy features a desert look around the tee boxes and greens with more of a links feel along the fairways. It challenges every level of player.” Back to the bunkers, they are big and they are deep — anywhere from four to seven feet deep. Barten said, if you find yourself in one (and you will) don’t try to do too much. “Get out your highest lofted club, open up your stance, and take a steep swing path,” he said. “You may not advance the ball very far, but at least you are out of the bunker!” The Legacy features several memorable holes including the par-5 14th and the par-3 15th. “Those two holes have a lot of character,” Barten said. Playing anywhere from 580 to 462 yards, the 14th has fairway bunkers on the left and more bunkers and water near the green. “This can be a birdied hole, but your drive and second shot need to find the fairway before hitting your lay up,” he said. “The green slopes from back to front with two different tiers so staying below the hole is a must if you want to sink that birdie putt!” With a trio of bunkers and water protecting the green, club selection is pivotal on the par-3 15th (photo above). “You need to hit a solid iron shot off the tee, because the water and bunkers create a forced carry,” Barten said.

Talk about saving the best for last, you complete your round by playing The Legacy’s two signature holes. The par-3 17th is long and features the largest bunker on the course, but your biggest challenge awaits on the green. “There is a large tier in the middle of the green sloping from back to front,” Barten said. “If you can stay out of the bunker and on the correct side of the tier, a par is possible — and par is a great score on this hole.” More than anything else, an unusual site on the par-5 18th grants it signature status. Just right of the tee box are three grain silos, not something you’d expect to see in the Arizona desert. Those silos and the Sierra Vista House, located just off the first tee, add to the course’s historic charm. The two original silos were built in 1902 and were once the tallest structures in Maricopa County. “The clubhouse is taller now than the silos,” Barten said. The Sierra Vista House was a popular spot in the early 1900s, with Theodore Roosevelt and Pancho Villa among its most well-known visitors. While 52 bunkers and a myriad of potential obstacles may sound daunting, Barten said the Legacy is really not an overly-challenging course. But buried in that statement lies a gigantic “IF!”

Teeing off over water to a fairway with bunkers on right, trees and desert on left, can make the par-4 12th hole slightly intimidating off the tee. “If — you can navigate shots away from the fairway bunkers and keep the ball in play, you will have a great time,” he said. The greens here are very large with subtle undulation, so lagging your first putt is always a best practice at Legacy. “Speed is critical! Although South Mountain is in sight, it does not have any significant effect on your putts, so lag putting is key, if you want to score well,” said Barten. www.TeeTimesMagazine.com

Just right of the tee box on the par-5 18th are three historic grain silos, not something you’d expect to see in the Arizona desert. The two original silos were built in 1902 and were once the tallest man-made structures in Maricopa County. If practice really does make perfect, then you will definitely want to visit Legacy’s new Golf Channel Academy — a 7,500-square-foot facility featuring indoor hitting bays, launch monitors and K-Vest technology. “Everyone now has access to the best teaching and technology available — teaching once only accessible to tour players,” Barten said. “For the first time, the public will have a facility where they can come, and have a team of proven experts evaluate, educate and develop their skills and ultimately lead to greater enjoyment of the game.” Learn more about the Golf Channel Academy at The Legacy Golf Club by visiting www.LegacyGolfPerformanceCenter.com.

Nestled against South Mountain, The Legacy Golf Club offers players a true desert look around the tee boxes and greens and a links feel along the fairways. With 52 perfectly placed and deep bunkers, it challenges players of every level. Hole 7 par 3 shown above. With the combination of new age golf technology and old school golf charm, The Legacy Golf Club is perfect for your next Arizona golf trip’s courses to play list and a great place to leave your Arizona “Legacy.”  January 2017

A Letter From a St. Andrews Caddie…

OR why the Scots love Tom Watson so much Editorial and Photography by Alan Hoskins

M

Alan Hoskins

eet Dave Lindsay, professional golf caddie. Better known as “Badger” or just “Badg,” Lindsay’s home ground is the Old Course at St. Andrews, Scotland, UK, where as far I can determine, he’s pretty much an icon on the course where golf was given birth.

If you visit the website www.St.AndrewsLegacy. com you will see what we are trying to do to help these veterans to rebuild their lives and give them a sense of achievement through golf and meeting the Master Class of Tom Watson, who I hold in the highest esteem along with Jack Nicklaus, whom I also caddied in his group in 2001.

One of those people who you immediately like with a shake of the hand, Badger is everything you could expect of a St. Andrews caddie — friendly, personable, knowledgeable, helpful. I know because, by luck of the draw, Badger was my caddie when on my 18 memorable holes a year ago that launched a friendship that also included followup phone calls and now, “The Letter.” Recounting a reunion with Tom Watson, the letter from Badger was written in reference to the St. Andrews Legacy, a Scottish charity working with international veterans organizations with a focus on veterans who sustained various injuries while in the service of their countries. Here is what Dave Lindsay “Badger” wrote me about Tom Watson:

Badger (on left) was my caddie when I played St. Andrews with Beaver “Paul Owen,” Badger’s close friend on the St. Andrews caddie staff.

Tom was doing a photo shoot on the Sulken Bridge as we teed off on No. 18 with wounded servicemen, both Brits and American guys. Tom stood and talked to the guys, then canceled his photo shoot and walked up the 18th fairway with us. I was humbled, as I’ve known Tom since 2002 when I caddied for Terry Carlson from Club Estonia in North Scottsdale, Arizona. We also played a practice round together at Royal County Down in Northern Ireland and on Tom’s sponsors day last year, he came to me and said, “You still loopin’ Badg?” in front of all the Links Trust Officials. Wow!

Tom is a true gentleman, and he also thanked me Alan, for looking after you. I hope you and your buddies are well and that you will come back to the ‘Old Grey Toon’ someday. Kindest regards to all, Dave (Badger) Lindsay

Tom Watson (in pink) stopped a photo shoot on the Swilcan Bridge at St. Andrews’ Old Course to pose for photos with wounded veterans and then walked down the 18th fairway with the vets. (photo courtesy Dave Lindsay)

We talked of old times and Bruce Edwards [Watson’s longtime caddie who died of ALS, who was a dear friend of Badger]. A friend of mine was on the greens-keeping staff at County Down and myself and Bruce as my guest were invited to the green-keepers party on Saturday night in 2002. A great party it was and we all had a great time. 26

(Badger and Beaver “Paul Owen,” Lindsay’s close friend on St. Andrews caddie staff were lucky to be photographed with the Claret Jug on Tom’s sponsor’s day. Also, Watson and Badger got together for a photo outside the R&A (Royal & Ancient) on the first tee of the Old Course.)

Calling Tom Watson a true gentleman for whom he holds the highest esteem, veteran St. Andrews caddie Dave (Badger) Lindsay (left) is a microcosm of Scotland’s love affair with Watson. (photo courtesy Dave Lindsay)

TEE TIMES GOLF GUIDE January 2017

And that, dear readers, is why the Scots have such a great love affair with Tom Watson. 
