Governor’s Newsletter District A-12 District Governor Len Day
My LionsFamily It’s almost October, summer is over and things are getting b u s i e r, r e g u l a r meeting are happening with our clubs planning service projects to m a k e o u r communities and the world a better place. As Lions we are always looking to provide more service to those that need it the most. To provide more service we must invite for impact. I am not saying to go out and just add members but to ask people that you know will make an impact in serving to give people a hand up. On September 9th and 10th the Multiple District A Governors met in Markham and reviewed the committees and programs that the Lions of Ontario do. This is much like our District cabinet meeting. It is amazing to hear the passion of the Lions form across the Multiple talk about what they do in there communities and realize that we a do similar things in a little different way. Doing relative projects that are needed is essential to the strength of our clubs and our organization. As I attend the different sessions at the USA Canada Lions Leadership Forum I am inspired to be a better leader. By becoming a better leader I want to motivate our Lions to become better and become our future leaders. Moving forward we have to be a positive group of leaders that believe in our dreams and make the dreams come true. The development and redevelopment of our leaders is a very important part of the future of the Lions. Lions, thank you for the service that you do, thank you for looking for more ways to increase the service you do and thank you for providing the leadership to complete this service. Be passionate about the work we do and share that passion with the other members of our clubs and districts and I am sure that passion will expand and make us the club of choice. Lions I am inspired by the work that you do. I hope that you will also become more inspired by the work that we as Lions do locally and around the world. We must make a positive choice to have our members make our communities better places for everyone. Lions we Lead the World by the service we provide and the World needs more service from the Lions. I know that you the Lions of District A12 will meet the future challenges because of who you are and what you do. Lions, please continue to develop, please continue to serve with passion in a positive way that will make us all better. Be the best you can be.

Blackstock Lions Club to Host Stroll in Support of Canada Dog Guides SCUGOG -- A community stroll in support of the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides will be held in Blackstock on Oct. 2. The Purina Walk For Dog Guides fundraiser is organized by the Blackstock and District Lions Club and will depart from the Blackstock Recreation Centre, 3440 Church St., at 11 a.m. The Blackstock event will be one of more than 200 walks taking place across the country in 2016 that aim to make more life-changing matches possible for Canadians with disabilities. The walk will raise funds for the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides, a national charitable organization which breeds, trains and matches service dogs with qualifying applicants from across the country. Last year, nearly $1.2 million were raised. “Having a guide dog makes the world more accessible for its handler,” said Keith Brown of the Blackstock Lions Club in a release. “Whether it's by helping someone who is visually impaired safely navigate a sidewalk or by literally opening a door for someone with a physical disability, these canine helpers allow people to be more independent and add greatly to their sense of safety.” For more information, to register or to make a donation, visit www.purinawalkfordogguides.com and click on Blackstock under Walk Locations.
Kids Get Eyes Checked in a Flash Through Lions Club In just a few seconds, Jessica Kinzey knew her 2-year-old son, Hunter, had 20/20 vision. “It's just amazing because with my daughter, when she was his age, she had to go through a whole battery of tests, and it was awful and really overwhelming for her,” she said. “With this, he sat on my lap, he looked at the machine and within five seconds it was done and he no idea anything even happened.” Hunter was among 20 children at Grandma's House Childcare Center in Apollo, PA who received a free eye screening Wednesday with a handheld vision screener through the Apollo Area Lions Club. The screener is held about 3 feet from the face, and in just a few seconds, the device takes a picture of the eyes. It then conducts eight tests to determine problems like near- or farsightedness and astigmatism, as well as pupil distance and eye alignment. Kinzey, assistant director at Grandma's House, said her son wouldn't otherwise have been able to receive an eye test unless they visited a specialist. “I don't have to worry,” she said. “We'll be doing (screenings) again next year here. So if something changes a lot, then I'll know I need to take him in for an exam.” The Lions Club bought five of the eye screeners, which are shared between all five counties in district 14-N. Gaylene Toland, with the Apollo Area Lions Club, said the noninvasive nature of the screening device is good for small children. “I'm about 3 feet away so it doesn't scare the kids,” she said. “(And) it does so much more than the old way.” Kinzey said Grandma's House is planning to offer eye screenings at its Upper Burrell location next month. Doesn’t Replace Eye Exams While the vision screener doesn't replace the traditional eye test chart or exams given by an optometrist, it's a good tool for health fairs or free eye screenings. The device can be used to identify undiagnosed problems, especially in children or adults who don't schedule regular checkups. “It's a nice screening tool,” said Dr. John Opalka, a Kittanning optometrist who keeps one of the devices in his office for easy access by Lions Club chapters. “If there are undetected problems, then people will know maybe there's something there; that you should go see someone.” The Lions Club bought the screeners using grant money from three nonprofits. Each device costs about $7,000. The Community Foundation of Kittanning awarded $8,000, the Lions Club International Foundation gave $16,000 and the Lions of Pennsylvania Foundation contributed $2,000. The Apollo club had to pitch in $18,000. One of the Lion's Club missions is to aid the blind and visually impaired. One in Five Kids Has Undetected Problem “The idea is to catch it early because 15 to 20 percent of kids who start school have a vision problem that's undiagnosed,” said Tom Toland, with the Apollo Area Lions Club. “We give them a printout that they can take to their doctor.”The Apollo Area Lions Club used the screener to do the yearly eye exams the nurse conducts on Apollo-Ridge School District students. Three volunteers were able to screen more than 600 students in about five hours.
