Should You Try Zero Inbox? By Randy Walton This zero inbox concept, I don’t know if you’ve heard of this, but this is sort of one of my hot buttons right now. I don’t think it’s for everybody. I need to be very clear when I say that. I don’t think it’s something that everybody can do. One of my businesses really focused on task and activity management. We focus on a specific industry for that. This woman, Bluma Zeigarnik, in 1923 she was doing a lot of research around this idea of the mental load that we carry when we have tasks to do. She said the most interesting thing she found out was that if I have work to do, even if I decide not to do it, I sort of push it away for the moment, I will continue to experience intrusive thoughts. Meaning, even though I’ve decided not to do it, I’m still carrying the mental load associated with it. Now, that plays itself out in our email maybe worse than any other place in our life because if you think about it, most of us use our email as a to-do list. It’s the queue that defines how we spend our time and our energy. It’s a queue that anyone who has your email address has permission to add to. Some of those people are maybe not the cleverest folks because they’re going to just send you stuff just to send you stuff, and that’s not really a great way to establish priorities if you really want to be highly productive. So what do you do about it? Well, the only way to reduce the cognitive load is to delegate to someone else in a way that you feel absolute confidence and trust that they have it and you can literally take it out of your brain and kind of set it aside, or to put it into a system you can trust. Whatever that is. Any kind of task management system where you can assign a due date. You can assign it into the future in a place where your attention will be drawn to it when it is necessary. When we are able to see our work that way, we can start to think about things like, “What am I really capable of?” So the idea is that everything that comes into your inbox, you immediately curate it. If you have to act on it, you put it into a task system and you delete it. If you can act on it in that moment, obviously do it in that moment. If it doesn’t require any action on your part or it’s just informative, just stick it in one big archive. Everything is searchable today. There is no reason to make it over complicated. Suddenly I’m not establishing the priorities of my day based on someone else’s needs. I’m thinking about what is really important for my future, the things that I need to do to accomplish, the goals that I think are important for my business or for my life or for my family or whatever it might be. It’s hard. I’m not going to kid you. It’s a really difficult thing. But it’s really based on this idea that you are going to do the work one way or another. Would you rather do the work with intention or would you rather do the work by accident when you get to it? You and I both know that there are so many times that something drops below the waterline, and by the waterline I mean the scroll line in your inbox and you forget about it and then eventually you scroll down and then, “Oh gosh, I needed to do that, I missed a deadline or I forgot to respond to somebody.” That’s a terrible feeling. Not really the performance of a highly task-oriented working machine. That’s not how we want to do it. So it’s tough, but it’s a really powerful concept if you can embrace it.

INSURANCE MATTERS Winter tires beneficially affect all of us. Proper tires mean fewer collisions, fewer injuries and deaths and the Insurance industry recognizes this. As a result, effective January 1, 2016, a new Winter Tire discount on your car insurance is available. This Ontario wide discount ranges from 2% to 5% off most, but not all, of your insurance costs. The vast majority of Insurers are providing the discount now, however a few (sadly) demand their customers wait until their car insurance policy renews, which could be months down the road.
Insurance companies do require a few things to verify the discount including all 4 tires must be recognized as winter tires, proof of purchase or installation and usually a picture of the tires on the car showing the Transport Canada alpine logo - a mountain with a snowflake in it. Call your Broker or Agent to see what documentation is required for your Insurer to award you this discount. This discount is there for the asking- ask for it today! Winter is a tough season for almost everyone around the lake in our part of the world. It’s really no secret that we miss a significant amount of sunlight as the lake effect takes over and produces those overcast day doldrums we experience as well as causing a certain amount of shut in during some of those nasty snow squalls we experience. There’s another thing that happens during this part of the year that even our dog Duke can’t fight. This is the time of year where comfort food seems to creep in with a vengeance coupled with a compounding lack of exercise. We can fall off the exercise and diet wagon by eating to feel better and sometimes just to deal with the boredom and the way we feel because of the not so good weather and outside conditions. We tend to want to eat more, sleep more, sit around, you know, do that Canadian Winter thing in the Great White North during our unique area Lake Effect Gray season. We find ourselves looking for that vitamin D fix or artificial light boxes to combat any kind of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) that comes along. Bad weather, cold temperatures and the dark days of winter months in the northern hemisphere can affect individuals profoundly. Many of us envy those Beacher Snow Birds that escape the doldrums to seek warmer climates in the South and come back in the spring all rejuvenated. Not to fret. My special lady, Eva has her own formula for wishing in the warmer days and keeping her energy levels up and her sights high for what is to come in the spring. There’s a new strategy about comfort food this winter in our household. After the effects were tallied last year, even Duke set an all-time high weigh-in at the vet. I had to start a whole new eating and walking regime. Eva, started planning our snacks a lot differently this go around. Eva put her culinary talents to work on more taste and less calories. This is going a long way to keep us all healthy and more energetic. This year we have a lot more activity going on during the gray days. Thanks to a handful of energetic people in our town, Eva has found herself taking Yoga classes twice a week. Our dog Duke reaps a spin-off from Eva’s new program given she has found more energy to take Duke for more walks even when the weather is somewhat questionable. Then there are the new plans for the outside. Eva has already settled on where our Jurassic climbing vine cucumber arrangement will be located by the deck for this coming growing season. She has planned the garden and where all the flowers will go. We have already been out looking at lawn and garden stuff at our local hardware stores. She has been busy already planning what stays and what will be new on our deck as the snow leaves us in the Spring. The good news about the Lake Effect Blues in Wasaga Beach is that it is a state of mind. Get out there and enjoy the winter sights and activities of the Wasaga community. Start planning your spring. Take that snowshoe walk on the Wasaga Beach Nordic Center trails. Take up a new hobby as a snow sledder. Curl up and read your favourite book. Our Wasaga Beach public library even has online book loans. You don’t even have to leave the house to get a book. Choose your attitude and just plain eat more fruits and vegetables. The beautiful spring weather in our community will be here in no time. “Be the Beach”, send me your thoughts and comments at Gary@beachBOOSTER.com. Your efforts count in making this community the preferred place in which to live, work and play. Gary is president of Critel Professional Services, www.critel.ca, chairs the Wasaga Society for the Arts and the Wasaga Film Festival. Gary also lives, works and plays in Wasaga Beach.
Approx. Pop. 38,000. In Blandford and East Oxford townships, Oxford County, on the Thames River at Cedar Creek and Hwys. 2 & 59, 43 km. Northeast of London. Rear Admiral Henry Vansittart is considered to be the founder of Woodstock, although most of the work was done by his agent, Capt. Andrew Drew. During the 1837 Rebellion, Drew commanded the Canadian force that destroyed the American steamer Caroline. Drew went to the area in 1832 and on Vansittart’s behalf bought a tract of land in what is now the east side of the city, surveyed it into lots and built houses for himself and for Vansittart. The west side of what is now the City of Woodstock had already been laid out as a town plot by Lt. Gov. John Graves Simcoe. The community was first known as Town Plot; later, one half was Oxford and the other, Brighton. Vansittart arrived in 1834, built a store and a tavern and financed the construction of St. Paul’s Church, which was consecrated in 1838 and is still in use. The post office established in 1835, and the place was called Woodstock after a village in Oxfordshire, England. Woodstock townhall was built in 1852 and is now home of the Oxford County Museum. A plaque at his former home on Vansittart Avenue recalls Thomas “Carbide” Willson who in 1892 discovered a commercial process for producing calcium carbide, a chemical compound used in the manufacture of acetylene gas.

Fit and Healthy in The Beach
Expert answers to your health and wellness questions by Jessica Brown Question: A friend of mine has been following a gluten-free diet, and is losing weight and feeling more energetic than she has in awhile. That said, she is not gluten intolerant and doesn’t have celiac disease. Is this diet recommended for weight loss and general health? Answer: This diet is not intended for presumably healthy individuals, and there isn’t any research to indicate that it helps with anything other than gluten intolerance or celiac disease. There are many socalled “experts” out there that attribute the inability to lose weight, or a lack of energy, to any number of dietary factors, including gluten. Unfortunately, they can’t point to any studies indicating that gluten is the problem, and if that’s the case, a lack of gluten is unlikely to be the solution. Celiac disease is diagnosed with a blood test and an intestinal biopsy, and gluten intolerance is typically diagnosed if gastrointestinal symptoms persist in the absence of a clinical diagnosis. Your friend is likely experiencing weight loss as the result of following a more restrictive, lower calorie diet, and this probably explains her renewed energy level as well. If she wants to continue the diet, that’s completely fine, but it probably isn’t necessary to reach her health and wellness goals. Question: I just started lifting weights and noticed that I have some significant muscular imbalances when it comes to strength. Is this normal, and if so, what can I do about it?
Answer: This is completely normal, and is something that most people deal with when they start a strength training program. Most of us have a dominant side that becomes stronger as we age, thanks to repetitive use. This leaves us with a weaker side that can make strength training more challenging. Luckily, these weaknesses can be overcome. If you engage in a regular lifting program, your weaker side will gradually catch up over time. You don’t even need to focus specifically on your weaker areas, though many people do, in order to balance things out a bit faster. Bottom line consistent training and time will create a balanced and strong body, so just stick with it!
