Twin Creeks Golf Senior Mens’ League Final Event of 2016

Photography Courtesy of Enrique Photo Art www.mywasagabeach.com The Twin Creeks Golf Senior Men events are held every Wednesday morning throughout the season. One of the goals of our club is to foster fellowship so foursomes are changed each week. The Twin Creeks Senior Men’s League ended a very successful 2016 season on Wednesday, September 21st with a scramble competition and an outstanding banquet. The winning team of Paul Lattman, Cal Budgell, Lawrence Lamarche, and Mike Mcwilliam scored a stunning thirteen under par round of 59, Closest to the pin contests were won by Mike Bissonnette (#3), Mark Son Hing (#8),Frank Eilles (#11), and Andy Beaudoin (#16). The players all are looking forward to next season. The weekly team competitions based on a Modified Stableford System and a randomly selected team structure remain very popular features because of the fellowship and camaraderie which ensues.

The Stableford System was developed by Dr. Frank Barney Gorton Stableford more than 100 years ago, as he introduced it to his fellow members at a golf club in Wales. It was an experiment back then and Stableford was not happy with the results, so he worked on a new formula that he introduced in 1931. He wanted to deter golfers from giving up after playing only one or two bad holes, a common occurrence during tournament play. It is also credited with significantly speeding up the pace of play. A variation in points on the original Stableford System is called the Modified Stableford System. The Twin Creeks Senior Men’s League uses a point system: 1 for a Bogey, 2 for a Par, 4 for a Birdie and 8 for an Eagle or Hole-In-One. There are no deductions for Double Bogey or worse.

Radio, Records & Rock Stars I had the pleasure of speaking to Jeff Woods, radio broadcaster, author and publisher of “Radio, Records and Rock Stars”. Jeff is known as “Canada’s voice of classic rock” he interviewed almost every Rock Stars on the planet. Consumed by music for over 30-years hosting radio programs and series, since 1983, Jeff was the creator and host of “The Legends of Classic Rock” heard internationally by a million weekly listeners across Canada and the world for fourteen seasons. He published his first book titled “Radio, Records and Rock Stars” released on May 2016 which has garnered great success thus far. In his book, “Radio, Records & Rock Stars” he features some of his best interviews. A musician at heart, Jeff found his niche in radio “I went the radio route so I can help prop up the careers of artists that I admire get a chance to play on the radio and interview them. Some of the best interviews ended up in the book,” said Jeff Woods, broadcaster and author of Radio, Records & Rock Stars. In just six months, Jeff completed his book. “I would get up at 8:00 a.m. in the morning and literally sat at my desk all day pouring out memories thoughts and

recollections of interviews.” The book alternates between interviews with artists and Jeff’s own life in the business along with photos of some of the biggest names in the music industry. “You get my life story and then you get an interview with Rush; then you get my life story and then you get an interview with Ozzy Osbourne and it alternates that way for about 400 pages including a lot of photos with some of these characters I had the pleasure of meeting.” Of all the interviews he completed, one of his favourite artists was David Bowie. He recalls how David put him at ease within two seconds. “It felt like a conversation between two old friends. He connected so much. I didn`t realize how much until he was gone. I just miss him a lot.” Jeff has a very interesting work history. He feels very fortunate to have been able to make a living doing something he enjoys profoundly that relates to music. When asked about his fondness memories, he recalls back in the day being on the air when the action was on turntables. There’s nothing like dropping a needle, cuing up a record and then giving an introduction with some background about the artist or the record and hitting play and cranking up the volume. That was a lot of fun.” Jeff plans to pursue writing however not necessarily about music. “I really get a great satisfaction out of writing putting thoughts to print rather than just radio. I would like to delve into fiction and maybe write books not related to music.” Listen to Jeff Woods Beach Corner podcast interview at beachboosterradio.com home page. IN A RUSH?

... I HAVE 15 MORE STOPS ON THIS ONE LANE ROAD Page 6 beach BOOSTER

Ok so what’s a nutburger? Well this term comes from a blog that I follow that has originated from a very dynamic lady, self-made small town entrepreneur cheerleader by the name of Becky McCray. Becky started Small Biz Survival in 2006 to share rural business and community building stories and ideas with other small town business people. She and her husband own a retail liquor store in Alva, Oklahoma, and a small cattle ranch nearby Alva. Becky is an international speaker on small business. She has been to Ontario to speak in the past. In a nutshell, she is the best thing that has ever happened to small towns and you can get on her newsletter list at Becky McCray, www.smallbizsurvival.com. So what’s my point? Well, we had a great summer here at the Beach. Most people are very happy with the return of the tourists, a rekindling our relationship with Quebeckers and a good groundswell of summer business for all of our business owners and plenty of great events for our visitors and our residents and families. The kicker is that it’s a start and only a start. Now is not the time to take a rest. A change is better than a rest. So it’s time to start planning for Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017. We can make this a pivotal event for Wasaga Beach in the history of the newly incorporated town of 1974 called Wasaga Beach. So here’s the where the nutburgers come in. They're the people who are crazy enough to open an art gallery or a coffee shop in some funky-looking empty town building, and make it work. They're the ones who refuse to listen to the "Committee of Negativity" (alive and well in this town) or the CAVE people - Citizens Against Virtually Everything. Maybe you're not a full-fledged Nutburger yourself, but you are tired of dealing with others in our town who are just too closed-minded. Wouldn't it be great if you could open them up to being more idea-friendly and tap into their energy to come up with some great concepts to feature our Town of Wasaga Beach in 2017 and really put it on the map for Ontario and Canada? Small town tourism pros and their business partners face this same problem in many small towns. The ideas they're promoting are like everyone's ideas in small towns: vulnerable to being torn apart in public by the naysayers and haters. So if you are not a Nutburger how about helping someone who is and help them get together with all the other nutburgers in town and create something special to bring to Wasaga Beach to have the best year ever in 2017. We can do this. It’s time to put fear and doubt in the vault and lock them up for good. We have some of the most sought after natural beauty in the world in our local domain and its time to show the world more of our down home Beach hospitality and offer our visitors and our residents and their families the experience of their lifetime in 2017. Maybe we can even connect with a few nutburgers in Creemore, Stayner, Elmvale and Collingwood, etc., and create a regional extravaganza event in 2017. “Be the Beach”, send me your thoughts and comments at Gary@beachBOOSTER.com. Your efforts count in making this community the preferred place in which to live, work, learn and play. Gary is a YB12 Coach and Business Advisor for Critel Professional Services, www.critel.ca, and lives, works, learns and plays in Wasaga Beach.

Fun on The River In a recent The Way Wasaga Was feature, we discussed not only the historical significance of The Nottawasaga River in Wasaga Beach, but how lucky we are to enjoy the many recreational activities provided by the river meandering through our town. I recently enjoyed sitting down with our good friend, Bing Jowett, as he shared some of his great collection of Wasaga Beach photos and memories. Bing grew up in Wasaga Beach with his family having several businesses in town, including Jowett’s Resort on the river (close to the current 13th Street). Bing is a past president of the The Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce and was the owner & operator of Four Seasons Sports in The Beach, at one time Ontario’s largest Arctic Cat dealership. Bing also was involved in organizing Water Ski Shows and Power Boat Racing on the Nottawasaga and also constructed a professional Water Ski Jump in the river, in front of Jowett’s Resort.
