Will I Live to see 80? Here's something to think about. I recently picked a new primary care doctor. After two visits and exhaustive Lab tests, he said I was doing fairly well for my age. (I just turned sixty-five). A little concerned about that comment, I couldn't resist asking him, 'Do you think I'll live to be 80?' He asked, 'Do you smoke tobacco, or drink beer, wine or hard liquor?' Oh no,' I replied. 'I'm not doing drugs, either!' Then he asked, 'Do you eat rib-eye steaks and barbecued ribs? 'I said, 'Not much.... my former doctor said that all red meat is very unhealthy!' 'Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, boating, sailing, hiking, or bicycling?' 'No, I don't,' I said. He asked, 'Do you gamble, drive fast cars, or have a lots of sex?' No,' I said... He looked at me and said... Then, why do you even give a crap?'

Lieutenant Worsley and his crew constructed their winter quarters four miles from the mouth of the Nottawasaga River. This event took place in September 1814 just after the capture of the American ships the Tigress and Scorpion. At the end of the war 1812 plans were scrapped to build a naval base in Penetanguishene. The quarters at Schoonertown had burned down during the summer of 1815. Buildings were re-built in September by three of Lieutenant Wingfields (Commander of the Scorpion) men. By October, Commodore Sir Edward Owen decided on Schoonertown as the site for a temporary naval establishment on Lake Huron. At that time Captain P.S. Hambly was appointed as the Commanding officer. The purpose of the establishment was to repair and maintain ships, construct bateaux to carry provisions, and help guard commissary stores at the mouth of the river. Unfortunately, this site was prone to strong winds, a shifting sand bar, an unsheltered bay for ships, and lack of a suitable dockyard and storeroom facilities. It was recommended in July 1816 by Sir E. Owen to have Schoonertown transferred to Penetanguishene. The implementation of this decision was slightly delayed due to the road to Penetanguishene was rough and swampy. Schoonertown was abandoned in late 1817 and is now preserved with the Schoonertown parkette and is under the responsibility of Wasaga Beach Provincial Park.

'Life's at the Beach!' By Ellen Riches Springtime at the Beach After a fantastic preview of summer a few weeks ago, we have settled back into normal temps for spring. That little mini-summer has given me a huge boost in terms of thinking about those upcoming lazy, hazy days of summer and how the beach transforms almost in an instant. There are lots of events to look forward to this summer and the spring time is the time to prepare. One of the best ways to prepare; have fun, enjoy our town and let everyone else know what a beautiful hidden jewel Wasaga Beach really is. This spring we are also making some preparations for the Bicentennial of the War of 1812. Our new Welcome Centre at Nancy Island is ready to greet our visitors and Keith Johnston Natural Heritage Education Coordinator for Wasaga Beach Provincial Park, is going to be speaking at the next 'Breakfast at the Beach' on April 12th at the Beacon. Keith is going to let us all in on the plans for this event and encourage the local businesses to prepare for a pretty special time here at the Beach this summer. The Networking Committee for the Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce (chaired by Dr. Sarah Adams, Trudie McCrea, Robert Riches, Dianna Chycki, and myself, Ellen Riches) is celebrating its third year on this April 12th breakfast. Yep, we have been successfully holding our breakfast meetings with speakers for three whole years. We are particularly delighted to welcome Trish and George of UPS as our newest sponsors of this event. Thank you Trish and Pete for providing the design and print for our 'Member of the Month' flyer that is displayed at the breakfast. Breakfast at the Beach' is just one of many events happening this spring and over the summer. Plans are afoot in many quarters of our Town to make this summer one of the best yet. So, get out the golf clubs, pump up the tires, shake off those dusty sneakers and prepare to hit the ground running. You live at the Beach, right? That's what we do here. Hm – I think it's time for a bike ride!

If you ask ten different people in Wasaga Beach what makes for a healthy community you are likely to get ten different answers. If you go to the Town's website you will see that we are in good hands. A Healthy Community Network (HCN) has been formed and acts as a link between Council and the citizens of Wasaga Beach. The HCN has been created to advise Council on matters relating to active and healthy living, the environment - natural, physical, social, economic and the creation of a sustainable and healthy future for the town. If you ask me what makes for a healthy community I would say it is its youth. These are our future leaders who will be guiding Wasaga Beach towards its vision. This leads me to talk about our Youth Centre. It was ten years in the making driven by Starr Scott our Town's Recreation Coordinator who had a vision and with great support of the Town and Council this vision came in to being. The Youth Centre is in its second year of operation and in its last year of trial operation. This means a report will be tabled to Council late this fall to demonstrate that the Youth Centre should remain a vital link to our community. The good news is that in talking to Shelley Brook, Youth Coordinator for Wasaga Beach, the centre has been a success story, far surpassing youth membership levels early on in its start-up and effective in shaping and affecting the lives of our youth members through dedicated and caring staff. You just have to go there and tour the facilities to experience the work Shelley and her team are doing. It's this kind of stuff you won't get on a report. During my tour of the centre, I could sense the rapport going on with the youth members and warmth created by centre. “They make the most out of a space that could be a lot bigger to accommodate the swells of activities going on throughout the year” says Shelley. So how do we keep this success story going? Naturally, the centre must get funding outside of the very good support provided by the Town. Volunteers are always needed to support their programs. Activities and events conducted by Wasaga Beach businesses, community groups, clubs and associations can always offer ways to integrate the youth centre members into their plans to help in their efforts to do more in making all of our community events successful. The benefits are twofold. The Wasaga Beach businesses, groups and associations can cultivate future prospects in terms of future employees or future members while opportunities are created for our youth to get involved and do community service.

The Sheep Washing Bee The life of early settlers was not all work and drudgery. Work could be made into play by means of bees – not the honey kind but a coming together of neighours and friends to raise barns, remove stumps, quilt or pare apples. Most everyone has heard of barn raising bees but what about sheep washing bees? Most early farmers kept sheep for their wool that could be turned into warm, sturdy clothing. Wool also could be sold for precious cash, traded at the local general store for goods that could not be made at home, or sent to a woollen mill. But winter took its toll on sheep, leaving their coats clogged with dirt, seeds, and chaff. Early in May, calls went out for a sheep-washing bee. It would be held on the farm of any farmer who had a stream both deep enough and rapid enough to serve the purpose. Logs pens would be built on the stream banks and fences erected. From all around, farmers would herd their flocks to the sheep-washing bee where they were placed in large upper pens. Two men stood knee deep in the stream and, one by one, the sheep were handed to them. Each sheep would be immersed in the water, pushing up and down and turned over frequently. Then they would be inspected by hand to remove all debris from their fleece. Flock after flock was marched to the water and washed. Returned home, the sheep would be shorn and each fleece rolled up to be sold for cash or spun into yarn or thread. Black sheep made black yarn and sheep washing bees made it clean.

Golf Question I know I should keep my head down when I'm over a short putt and wait to hear the ball go in the hole but I often look up early and it causes me to miss short putts. How can I keep my head down over my short putts? Answer I have some simple but very effective things you can do. The first is to look at the hole as you're putting. I have actually seen research that has found that most golfers putt better when doing this. It does take some practice however. So I suggest you go on the practice green and practice this technique. Obviously you won't look up too early when you're putting because you're already looking up! :-) If that's a bit too radical for you, there's something else you can do. When you're standing over a short putt I suggest you notice a spot or mark that is about 6 inches in front of your ball on a direct line to the hole. Once you've found this spot then I want you to move your eyes and focus on that spot rather than the ball. Then keep your attention on that spot all throughout your putt until the ball has come to a stop. So try these two techniques to see what works best for you... 1. Look at the hole as you're putting, or 2. Look at a spot about 6 inches in front of your ball as you're putting. Whatever technique you decide to go with you'll build up trust in your stroke and the confidence will follow. I hope you enjoyed this golf question and answer. The Masters is on this weekend. Can't wait! Jeff Richmond...http://www.TheConsistentGolfSchool.com

It Was An ID Ten T Error

As we Silver Surfers know, sometimes we have trouble with our computers. I had a problem yesterday, so I called Eric, the 15 year old next door, whose bedroom looks like Mission Control and asked him to come over. Eric clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem. As he was walking away, I called after him, 'So, what was wrong ? He replied, 'It was an ID ten T error.' I didn't want to appear stupid, but nonetheless inquired, 'An, ID ten T error ? What's that? In case I need to fix it again.' Eric grinned .... 'Haven't you ever heard of an ID ten T error before ? No,' I replied. 'Write it down,' he said, 'and I think you'll figure it out.' ? So I wrote down:

ID10T I used to like Eric, the little bugger!

The Way Wasaga Was....by Joe Bickerstaff With the sunlight shining across beautiful Nottawasaga Bay, she can be seen still standing tall with the Blue Mountains as a back drop. Wasaga Beach often has a great view of our famous Nottawasaga Lighthouse. The Nottawasaga Lighthouse was constructed on Nottawasaga Island, just west of the current Collingwood Harbour in 1858, as one of the six Imperial Tower Lighthouses built to guide the important shipping traffic in Georgian Bay. Ships were the major method of transporting goods and people from place to place and to the rail lines to Southern Ontario. The importance of safe travel on Nottawasaga Bay made our Nottawasaga Lighthouse one of the most important navigational aids on the Great Lakes. This remaining Imperial Tower we can call our own, is 85 feet tall, with an exterior of dolomite limestone, topped with granite to support the heavy cast-iron lantern room at its top. The walls of this tower are 7 feet thick at its base, tapering to 2 feet at the peak. The interior diameter remains a constant 10’ 6” from top to bottom. There were many noteworthy Lighthouse Keepers who lived on the island and kept the light lit through all kinds of conditions, to guide traffic in southern Georgian Bay. The first keeper of our Nottawasaga Lighthouse was George Collins who held the post of keeper for 32 years! He is credited with saving 52 lives while he maintained the light. Most notably, 24 lives were saved from the grounding of the passenger steamer The Mary Ward during a violent Georgian Bay storm in 1872. In 1958 the Lighthouse Keeper’s residence was torn down and the light atop the tower was automated. In the last few years of visible light, it was solar powered. In 2003 the Federal Government (Canadian Coast Guard) announced it would no longer maintain our Lighthouse. With no maintenance and lack of public interest in this historic Georgian Bay icon, a web of cracks began to appear in the tower’s exterior in 2002. Moisture seeped into the rubblestone interior and the cycle of freezing and thawing, as well as several lightning strikes, took their toll. In 2004 the inevitable happened and as a result of neglect, part of the north-west wall of the tower crumbled and slid away, exposing the rubblestone core. In 2005, the Department of Oceans and Fisheries offered funds to try and prevent further damage, but not to repair! Many problems were discovered and bad weather hampered the efforts. 40% of the allotted funds were consumed simply transporting the materials from the mainland to the island. As a simple and relatively inexpensive attempt to help save the tower, the exposed porous core was sealed to reduce further penetration of moisture and wooden blocks and metal reinforcing bands were strapped around the tower. These bands are still helping support our lonely lighthouse. Although this important part of the history of Southern Georgian Bay remains neglected and perhaps forgotten, she still strains to stand against the elements. The same elements she proudly projected a guiding light through for so many years. Without further intervention and help from local communities, perhaps our local lighthouse will simply give up and be destroyed by one of our Georgian Bay storms... the same type of storm that she has braved for over 150 years.
