New Nancy Island Welcome Centre Not to be missed by Resident or Visitor
The Town of Wasaga Beach is happy to be celebrating the 12th season of Jazz in the Park.
Photo by Joe Bickerstaff “A new Welcome Centre in Wasaga Beach Provincial Park will help promote tourism and boost the local economy”. That is the message from the Minister of Natural Resources. “Ontario’s provincial parks offer beautiful scenery, spaces to enjoy our natural resources and landmarks that hold an important place in history. The new Welcome Centre at Nancy Island Historic Site will help us tell the story of the War of 1812 to many generations in years to come,” shared Michael Gravelle, the Minister of Natural Resources, and MPP for Thunder Bay Superior North. The announcement on May 24th in Wasaga Beach on the new Centre for Visitors comes as Visitor Centres across the Northwest are being closed. The Centre will promote local tourism opportunities and help visitors learn more about the natural and cultural features of the park. It features interpretive displays on the Nancy Island Historic site and Wasaga Beach, including a three-dimensional map of the Wasaga Beach area. The Centre is located at the entrance to the Nancy Island Historic Site. The island was formed when the HMS Nancy sunk and silt deposited around its hull. This historic site is dedicated to preserving and sharing the story of the HMS Nancy and the War of 1812.

Point of View The month of June is upon us as we watch the sun set on May 2012. It was a May that provided us with some wonderful summer like weather and did not let us down on Wasaga Beach’s traditional unofficial start of summer, the Victoria Day Weekend! The weather provided a beautiful long weekend in The Beach as the forecasted clouds and rain stayed away until late in the three day holiday. Our local streets were busy with visitors arriving to enjoy what our area has to offer and businesses worked long and hard to keep their customers happy! I was reminded of the uniqueness of our town with the regular influx of visitors, when a local check-out clerk scolded me at one of our busy stores that Holiday Weekend. When finally reaching the cash after standing in a long line of beach wear clad shoppers for what seemed like eternity… the tired cashier looked at me and said, “YOU should know better”! Yes, as a local, why was I shopping on a weekend… especially a long weekend? I have learned my lesson again for this year. Although locals should perhaps reserve their shopping for weekdays… we should all venture out to enjoy what our town has to offer… even on a busy weekend! We may be slowed by excess traffic and crowds, but it is rewarding to see our town’s industry at work! Ours is an industry of welcoming visitors… the industry of tourism! This industry needs to be respected, nurtured and encouraged by all who live here, as every community needs a thriving industry. Wasaga Beach has a lot of unique and exciting Special Events happening over the summer months and all of us should enjoy them and invite friends, family and associates to take part! Let’s show off what The Beach has to offer, welcome all who visit and remind them to come back again… and again! Keep up to date with all of the local events planned by reading beach BOOSTER or following us on our popular blog available at BeachBooster.com . Information can also be found at WasagaBeach.com and WasagaInfo.com Joe Bickerstaff

“Good Job Bouquet” for Marilyn Beecroft Marilyn Beecroft has dedicated her career with Ontario Parks to interpretation both for Wasaga Beach Provincial Park as well as for all Central Zone Parks. Central Zone roughly covers an area north of the south shore of Lake Simcoe, east of the east shore of Georgian Bay including Wasaga Beach, south of the French River and west of the Ottawa River (excluding Algonquin Park). Marilyn has been a leader in interpretation at the zone level as well as at the provincial level where she has been involved in many committees over her career. Marilyn has shown true dedication and this has been really evident over the past two years where she has postponed her retirement to see the Wasaga Beach Welcome Centre through to completion. The vision for this project was Marilyn’s. She developed the project proposal and was successful in securing the funding for the project. Marilyn has dedicated herself to this project and has assisted in the design of the building and has been the leader in the development of all of the interpretive exhibits. Marilyn has demonstrated a very high level of expertise particularly in interpretive techniques, and program development. Most recently she has been the leader in the interpretive design for the Wasaga Beach Welcome Centre. Marilyn has been instrumental in the development of the interpretive displays for the facility and has definitely shown she is innovative and creative. In addition as the Central Zone Natural Heritage Education Specialist Marilyn has provided leadership and guidance to all Park Superintendents who have interpretive programs as well as all park Natural Heritage Education staff. Marilyn has ensured that ideas have grown and that each park has had up to date interpretive programs and interpretive material available for park visitors. Marilyn certainly has initiative which is shown in the Wasaga Beach Visitor Centre example where she took on this large project when she could have chosen to retire. Through this project she has proven her ability to build a link to park visitors, the community, the Friends of Wasaga Beach Park, Parks Canada and other private and government organizations. This project has moved forward through the Environmental Assessment process as well as the design and construction process without any major issues arising at all. Marilyn in fact has generated significant support for the project and has been successful in generating additional funds through outside sources. Marilyn has mentored many people throughout her career. She has been a leader in the Central Zone and provincially. She has been involved in the coordination of provincial interpretive workshops where she has actively participated in the instruction of staff. She has tirelessly made personal sacrifices to assist Superintendents in hiring the park interpreters and has ensured that she has been there to assist them all. Marilyn has always been positive and has shown incredible enthusiasm for her work. This enthusiasm definitely has a positive impact on everyone who works with her. She has truly been a dedicated leader at the provincial, regional and local level. The completion of the Welcome Centre at Wasaga Beach is an outstanding achievement and Marilyn is a major part of why this project has been so successful. She has worked on the Welcome Centre project at the same time as carrying her normal workload. Now that Marilyn has formally retired from Ontario Parks she has enthusiastically become a member of the Friends of Nancy Island and Wasaga Beach Park volunteering to lead the merchandising committee operating the Treasure Chest Store in the Wasaga Beach Welcome Centre – her legacy continues. Penetanguishene Road Project The Penetanguishene Purchase was completed in 1797 from the Georgian Bay Ojibway to the British Crown for the purposes of creating a naval dockyard on Lake Huron. An overland route was surveyed in 1808 and the road constructed during the War of 1812 by members of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment and the Royal Navy. Following the war the Penetanguishene Road was opened to settlement following the Nottawasaga Purchase of 1818. It has numerous historical locales and still connects the Lake Simcoe community of Barrie with the Georgian Bay communities of Midland and Penetanguishene. This project will highlight all the historical connections with the road, the most important transportation corridor in Ontario, publish a book and historical guide and mark the route with a bronze statue of the builders of the road . I asked Google about the ten best beach towns in the world to live. It told me that the top ten beach towns had an array of options for the many types of budgets. It mentioned that retirees, students, beach people, rich people and regular people can all find what they are looking for in these top ten beach towns. While the atmosphere and location of these beaches varies, they all offer a scenic setting and are close proximity to the water. Okay that makes a lot of sense. They all also have a healthy local economy and draw from activities associated with their natural beautiful surroundings. I coupled this new found knowledge with the fact that the province of Ontario has a tourism culinary strategy. Its vision states that “By 2015, culinary tourism in Ontario is valued as a leading contributor to a vibrant and sustainable tourism economy in the province.” Its underpinning values are Commitment, Collaboration and Communications. So what do you think would happen if we raised the culinary bar in Wasaga Beach? Looking around lately, you can see that we are attracting some notable new entrants coupled with some very fine dining locations to begin with. What if all of the culinary providers in Wasaga Beach got aligned around a tourism and local dining experience in which one learns about, appreciates, and/or consumes food and drink that reflects the local and regional cuisine, heritage, culture, tradition or culinary techniques of our area? Coming together as an association of culinary providers and tapping into the resources made available by the province could provide a lift to developing an overall local Wasaga Beach culinary strategy that can attract more tourists and provide more choices for our residents. The Ontario Culinary Tourism Alliance (OCTA) is a good place to start to look for guidance. Also, Ontario has very fine local farm production mix to work with along with other indigenous products from maple syrup to wild rice to cranberries, etc. I think this could be one more reason why Wasaga Beach has the makings of being a preferred visitor destination and great place to live. Done properly, culinary tourism tells the story of the heritage, the people and the landscape of a geographic area. It reflects 'place', enriches experiences, and can be a valuable tool to boost economic, social and community development. For all you Wasaga Beach culinary enthusiasts out there, if you need more information drop me a line. Let's step up to the plate! Beach Booster is certainly here to help our service providers. Send me your thoughts. Please email me at Gary@beachbooster.com

Reinhart Vinegar Rounding the corner in Stayner, heading east or west across Georgian Bay country, a sharp smell greets travellers. The aroma is not unpleasant and is as ancient as the wine of the Romans. Vinegar has been known for many ages. It was mentioned by Moses and would seen to have been in general use by the Egyptians. Both the Greeks and Romans used vinegar for cooking and as a refreshing cool drink – diluted of course. By the time the eighteenth century rolled around, people carried sponges soaked in vinegar to ward off the stench of cities like London, Paris and Rome. Victorian ladies suffering from the vapours restored themselves with cooling vinegar-soaked cloths. Today, vinegar is more commonly used on salad dressings and chips. That sharp smell on the outskirts of Stayner comes from one of the oldest cider mills in Ontario. John Reinhart founded Reinhart Vinegar back in 1910. Apples were, as they are now, one of the major food products of southern Georgian Bay. And in the days before the First World War, Reinhart began making a full-flavoured apple cider vinegar. Using the old-fashioned northern spy apple, the vinegar makers of Stayner soon became famous for their product that they shipped throughout Canada and the United States. Today, Reinhart Foods makes a number of other specialty vinegars including red and white vinegar. They also offer their products in bulk containers so that, unless you own a restaurant, their Stayner plant is the only place in Ontario where you can pick up Ontario white wine vinegar in a five litre jug.

The Golf Slice Fix The Golf Slice Fix Posted In Golf Improvement There are only two possible reasons why golfers slice the golf ball, and sadly most golfers who slice the ball do both of these things together. The first reason why a golfer would slice the golf ball is that they contact the ball with an open clubface. The other reason why a golfer would slice the ball is because they approach the ball from the outside, which imparts side spin on the ball. But, as I mentioned, most golfers who suffer from a slice problem unfortunately have both of these swing flaws happening together. In this article I’m going to give you the best drill to fix a swing path problem, as this tends to be the major reason why golfers hit a slice. And if this is the main reason why you slice the ball then doing this drill will fix your slice for you. At a later date I will teach you how to correct an open clubface problem, which also causes a slice. To do this golf slice fix drill get a 5 iron and place a ball on a tee. Then find a cardboard box. A box like the ones used to hold reams of paper is excellent for this. Then position the box just outside the ball so it’s almost touching where the toe of your golf club is going to be. Now setup to your golf ball making sure that you are aligned correctly. Once you’re aligned correctly then simply swing. Having the box so close to the ball will almost force you to swing down into the ball from the inside. If you don’t do swing down into the ball then the result is going to be that you hit the box instead of the ball, and this will give you some great, immediate feedback. If done regularly this drill will help you to groove a new habit of swinging from the inside instead of cutting across the ball. So keep hitting the ball while trying to miss the box and in time you will be able to miss the box and hit the ball first. When you can consistently approach the ball from the inside you will fix your slice and hit longer, straighter drives. You may even learn to hit pretty little draws. Won’t that be fun? So practice this golf drill often to fix your slice problem once and for all.

The Way Wasaga Was....by Joe Bickerstaff

Wasaga Beach has a long and rich history that most of us lucky enough to live here know and respect. I think many visitors and new comers to town are often surprised to hear of some to the historic events that have taken place in The Beach, as we grew and developed as a community. It was a pleasure to be present at the recent official opening ceremonies for the brand new Wasaga Beach Welcome Centre at the Nancy Island Historic Site. We all have a great deal to be proud of with this new addition to Wasaga Beach, designed to welcome and educate all who visit for many years to come. This great new building with it’s stunning nautical look, acts as entrance to our remarkable Nancy Island Historic Site… but also houses many displays and artefacts that tell interesting stories about Wasaga Beach and it’s past. Mary Watson of the Wasaga Beach Archives worked very closely with the MNR and Ontario Parks in making sure some important parts of our history was well represented. With Mary’s help, the Wasaga Beach Archives provided photos of bathing beauties and a vintage bathing suit to represent an important part of tourism in The Beach. An interactive post card display was created with vintage cards from The Archives that not only gives a glimpse into our past, but allows visitors to send a post card electronically! With the help of Albion Amusements, a vintage carousel horse and an old Playland Park sign was added to the display. Reminders of what made Wasaga Beach memories last for generations abound and help to tell new comers of our past. The Way Wasaga Was is well represented in the beautiful new building designed to Welcome all to Wasaga Beach. I urge residents of The Beach to visit and show off this new Welcome Centre to family and friends! Joe Bickerstaff
Hot Topics in Real Estate: Well at first I thought we could talk about the important things such as mortgages, legal issues, but then I thought what about what others are talking about, so I went to Google, after all, where else do you find information that has to be true?? Most popular topic? Will the bubble burst? One thing’s for sure if you believe in self fulfilling prophecy it certainly will. It has been noted that Toronto’s condo market may be being stretched. In late 2011, 132 Cranes were in the Toronto Skyline, to put that into prospective, New York ranked 3rd with 86 after Mexico City placed 2nd with 88. Now I’m not sure where Wasaga Beach ranked, but the only crane we’ve seen lately was taking down the Dome!!! I guess we are not seeing the same rush on high rise condos! But I do understand from our Manager of the Planning and Development, Ray Kelso that we do expect to see an lot more activity in the building of residential dwellings over the next few years with the end of the “quota” through the “Places to Grow” and with so much land ready to be serviced all we need now is confidence to go forward. Oh! and also we need GOOD PLANNING. Any business person knows the value of taking the time and putting the resources into good planning. Are you listening Council members??? Ray and his staff need more good people if we are to have great planning and the Beach Front “vision” to take shape effectively. That’s a huge project on its own and if we are going to keep this resource, our water playground to its maximum potential it will need to be well executed. More experienced and pro-active planners are required. (I consider the river, bay and beach all part of the asset). Can you imagine some high end condos at beach area 2, something with covered parking, we have the views, lots of glass, marble and class. (Don’t like that? you can comment on my Facebook page if you like: Team Realty Executives). Oh! Oh! I think I got off topic, “will the bubble burst”? Well it may or it may not, but one things for sure being this close to the GTA and with the huge number of people who would like to be out of that rat race, it’s not a matter of will we grow?, it’s a matter of how fast? So what if our house prices don’t rise at the same rate as the rest of the country, as long as our blood pressure doesn’t raise either. Relax, its June and it promises to be a hot summer in Wasaga Beach. And THAT’S the hot topic we are looking for! Check us out on Facebook and have a fantastic weekend!! Glenn Cunningham SRES.
