Summer's Hottest New Attraction Opens at The Beach SKULL ISLAND---- Skull Island is a new, state-of-the-art attraction offering Caribbean music, waterfalls and the swaying palms opened June 15 for the 2012 summer season in beautiful Wasaga Beach. Guests will be lured into a tropical paradise, but soon adventure ensues as you and your fellow buccaneers seek to plunder the secret treasure of Skull Island. This world class family entertainment park is fun rain or shine and provides daytime and night-time entertainment for the whole family. Skull Island is a premiere Family Entertainment Park, featuring swashbuckling Adventure Golf. Fun for all ages and large or small groups, this eighteen hole course takes you to a lost island in the Caribbean - aptly named "Skull Island" - that for many a year was a hideout for scurvy dog pirates.

A world of imagination and wonder!

Skull Island has been designed, built and is owned by a father and son team, Garry and Ryan Sawatzky. Ryan and Garry saw the need for more family friendly entertainment in Wasaga Beach. Their vision was one of bringing quality entertainment to Wasaga Beach that the entire family can enjoy. It has been three years since the first sketches went down on paper to opening day. Why so long for a miniature golf? This isn't just a business for Garry and Ryan, it is truly a labour of love for them. This adventure golf course is not just about the game, but it's also their world of imagination and wonder. And what better place to create a Caribbean paradise then a community which boasts 14 kms of white sandy beaches and that is less than 2 hrs north of Toronto. It is affirmation of this community's great tourism future to have individuals like Garry and Ryan invest in choosing Wasaga Beach for this premiere family park. Notably 10% of net profits will be donated to the “Sawatzky Family Foundation” which supports a grassroots organization in Haiti called Sopudep. www.sopudep.org 104 Main Street. (705) 229-8873 Open Weekends 10 a.m.til 10:30 p.m. until June 29th then open 7 Days a week. www.skullisland.ca

Calling all Vendors!! Marketplace

For 2 days it was “thank you ma'am”, and “yes sir” and “aye aye”. I could really get used to hearing those words. Especially these days. The Sea Cadets are a group of well behaved, and polite young boys and girls that spent their year end trip with Fishing On My Time. No prom party here! They set up their tents in proper fashion while their commanding officers directed their assembly. Withstanding the downpours of rain the cadets stayed positive and upbeat and carried on like it was a bright sunny day. Later on they were able to practice their seamanship skills onboard the boats of Fishing On My Time while they had a tour of the Nottawasaga River. When back onshore Captain Shawn fired up the barby and grilled burgers and hot dogs compliments of Ehab Massad of Harvey's Wasaga Beach. They were able to get in a game of mini putt in the pouring rain at Pedro's Gift Shop after dinner. After braving the night in tents in the rain, the cadets headed off for breakfast at Burger King where Freddie opened up and served them. We were privileged to a full dress uniform parade and some heave line throwing competitions on Sunday morning. Afterwards the cadets headed of to Nancy Island for a tour and history lesson on the HMCS Nancy. A beautiful hand made paddle was presented to Captain Shawn and myself from the cadets in appreciation of our hospitality. We are looking forward to next year's year end party with the Sea Cadets Midland Branch again! Captain Andrea...Fishing On My Time

“Good Job Bouquet” to Darlene Dubeau-Poole

Darlene Dubeau-Poole is presented with “Good Job Bouquet” and Certificate by Cathy Holland-Hendry (Cathy’s Flower and Gift Boutique), Joe Bickerstaff and Bill Frieday of Beach BOOSTER.

For Darlene Dubeau-Poole the planning of this year’s Mayor’s Challenge Golf Tournament started months ago with many tasks to look after. Sponsors to sign up, prizes to gather, embroidered apparel to order, design & produce signage, take care of the dinner menu. Press Releases and Registration forms had to be printed and then the big rush of golfers wanting to play in this prestigious event. All 133 of them this year and where to have them tee-off at Wasaga Sands. All helpers had to be assigned to their duties on Tournament day. Darlene then ordered a perfect weather day! No doubt there was help from others but Darlene was in the Director’s seat. We at Beach BOOSTER say “Good Job” Darlene and have presented her with this week’s “Good Job Bouquet” and Certifcate. Congratulations!

Catch 22 opens in Wasaga Beach With the much anticipated opening of the new Catch 22 upon us, beach BOOSTER met with Executive Chef/Owner Bob Bickmore, along with his sons Michael (Assistant Manager) and Zachary (Sous Chef) who are all proud residents of Wasaga Beach. Manager Ashley Wray is also a longtime resident. After moving to Collingwood in 2004 to open Catch 22, Chef Bob found himself drawn to Wasaga Beach for shopping or for casual drives. When the time came to purchase a home, The Beach was an easy decision for Bob. “I love The Beach! I am exactly where I want to be at this stage of my life” says Bob. “This is my home. I have met some fantastic people, have the best neighbours and I wanted to bring my passion, Catch 22, to this amazing town.” Catch 22 will be sourcing fresh ingredients locally, while making sure they are all of the highest quality. In keeping with the desire to shop locally, Ontario Craft Brewery Beer will be on tap by the pint or as a sampler of 4-5 ounce glasses. The many folks who are familiar with the fresh made pastas, fresh fish, aged steaks, chicken and seafood that were enjoyed for almost 8 years at the Collingwood location, will be pleased to see them now served at the brand new Catch 22 in Wasaga Beach. A new section of the menu featuring “Social Foods” is great for sharing! Bob, his family and staff look forward to welcoming you to the brand new Catch 22, located at 962 Mosley Street in Wasaga Beach. Visit www.catch22grill.com or call 705-422-2281

Changing Wasaga Beach Lives Gary Cerantola; gary@beachbooster.com So what does the Creative Economy mean for Wasaga Beach? The innovation and knowledge-based economy now popularly known as the “Creative Economy” has become a major driver of economic growth around the world. Just as previous generations were taken aback from the changes moving from an agricultural economy to an industrialized economy, we face a massive transformation from an industrialized economy to a creative economy. What manufacturing industries we have experienced in our region, have essentially reached their sunset amidst valiant efforts being made to keep them going. We are left with tourism in Wasaga Beach and feel that one of the only levers we have left is tourism and related real estate development to create wealth and provide for jobs. The creative economy is an economy driven by ideas, innovation and knowledge. In this type of economy, people are paid to think using ideas, innovation, knowledge and collaboration in their work. People working in the creative economy can virtually live anywhere given the internet and why not invite them to live in Wasaga Beach. We have all the makings to develop the elements of the creative economy in our town; spectacular surroundings, quality of life and proximity to a world class industrial corridor spanning from Montreal to the GTA. The creative economy depends on access to post-secondary institutions and the quality of place and lifestyle able to attract creative people. Here’s where our natural riches in Wasaga Beach kick in. The longest fresh water Blue Flag quality beach with the most spectacular sunsets and surrounding attractions make our little piece of paradise desirable since it is just a stone’s throw from the largest population and commerce centre in the country. In the winter, our area provides for the most sought after snow mobile trails and outdoor winter sights and activities in Ontario. . Our challenge lies in collaborating with leaders, neighbours, experts, developers, businesses, arts and culture representatives, etc., to better understand our new economic realities and mobilize our collective efforts to realize opportunities that will take advantage of the new creative economy. We start by looking at what creative industries we have and which creative industries we can attract such as advertising, artists, architecture, business consulting, design, education, film, games, heritage, music, web and software, etc. These are all creative industries that can develop locally yet build business in the GTA since most of the business is carried out through the internet. Next we drill down inside these creative industries, to find the creative cultural industries. Creative cultural industries are at the core of all creative industries and just happen to be the fastest growing of all creative industries. The players involved in the creative cultural industries are the makings of independent artists, writers and performers, performing arts companies, agents and promoters of performing arts and entertainers, sound recording, radio and TV broadcasting, architecture and related services, software and new media publishing, web and software, etc. Wasaga Beach has come together with Collingwood, The Town of The Blue Mountains and Clearview Township to look at an economic development strategy that would build on the assets of the four communities that would guide economic development decision making and facilitate investment attraction and economic growth in the region. This view has spurred the communities to perform inventories of the region using a method called cultural mapping. Cultural mapping is a form of digital inventory that can illustrate our cultural assets on a map, on a municipal GIS system to be exact. Data was collected into six categories; cultural assets, creative cultural industries, community cultural organizations, festivals and events, cultural spaces and facilities, cultural heritage and natural heritage. The project identified a total of 700 cultural assets across the four municipalities. This is just the start. My question to the Wasaga Beach community is how can we take this to the next level? If you look at all the press releases supporting the creative economy at both the federal and provincial level for initiatives in Ontario lately, it does not take long to figure out that we could get some help to make things happen in our local economy.

All That From a Cow! A cow was one of the most prized possessions on a frontier Simcoe County farm. Without that bovine beast, there was no milk, no cream and not a speck of butter. The family cow was one of the best guarded of all livestock. Let the cow loose in the bush and it was sure to go dry. Instead, Bessie was kept in the barn, protected and fed. It was the farmwife’s job to milk the cow. The cow’s cream and butter combined with a few chickens and their eggs offered a chance to turn farm products into hard cash, a rare commodity on 19th century farms. In early days, large pans of milk were set to cool. When the cream rose to the top, it was skimmed off and made into butter. Eventually, milk cans, which could be placed in cold water, replaced the pan. Milk cans often had a tap that allowed the skim milk out, leaving just the cream in the can. By the late 1800s, centrifugal cream separators came on the market. These wonderful devices, in spite of having to be washed and rinsed daily, made quick work of what had been a slow, tedious job. Nearly all of the cream was made into butter, a commodity that brought cash into the farm home. There were many kinds of churns – rocker, dash and swing churns. Whatever kind was used, patience was required. A farmwife could tell by listening when the butter had been extracted from the buttermilk. After removing it from the churn, a paddle was used to force the last traces of milk from the butter. Salt was then added and the butter was packed into a crock or placed in a one-pound mold. Once a week, farm wives would take their butter and eggs to the local general store. A century later, milk now comes in cartons or bags and butter is bought at the grocery store.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Louis Oosthuizen's drive drifted deep into the right rough. He laid up short of the green and stood in awe while measuring up his third shot. Only 240 yards remained. "If anybody is on the green in two this week, that's something special," Oosthuizen said of the longest hole in U.S. Open history, the remodeled par-5, 670-yard 16th at The Olympic Club. If length weren't enough, the sharp dogleg left feels like a constant U-turn and the fairway narrows right at 300 yards. The flag is often blind until the third shot, and ones that miss long or left will bounce even farther away because of the grass mowed razor-thin beyond the tiny green. "The reason we did that is we really felt that would make it a true three-shotter," said USGA executive director Mike Davis, who oversees the course layout. "The wonderful thing about that hole is that from the back, if you miss any one of your shots, it's awful hard to catch up." Oosthuizen, the 2010 British Open champion, could never remember pulling out a 5 wood for his third shot before, hacking out of so much rough - "the thickest on the entire course," he said on the previous swing he had no choice. Staring up at the elevated green, he couldn't imagine even the field's longest hitters - Dustin Johnson and Bubba Watson among them - going for the flag in two, even under the best of circumstances. "It's too risky," Oosthuizen said. "The neck there on that fairway or the green is what, 6-7 yards wide? You're going to overrun it." Michael Thompson, the 2007 U.S. Amateur runner-up at Olympic Club, drove into the graded rough Monday. He laid up to 180 yards in front of the green and still had to hit a 5 iron. "When do we ever hit a 5 iron on our third shot on a par 5, ever?" Thompson said, laughing. "I think what makes it difficult is it's guarded in front with a bunker. For a long shot coming in, it'd be hard to hold the green." Lucas Glover, the 2009 U.S. Open champion at Bethpage Black, played the 16th in his first practice round about the best anyone could hope to this week. He drove into the fairway, hammered a 3 wood short, floated the ball onto the green with a sand wedge and two putted for par. The walk alone still wore him out. "That hole is all you want," Glover said. "I don't know that anybody, without a serious wind at their back, could get there in two. Getting there? Maybe. Getting the ball to hold? There's no chance. It's a three-shot hole for sure." The unleveled Lake Course is short by most U.S. Open standards. The course plays at a par-70, 7,170 yards - 373 yards longer than the last time it hosted the national championship in 1998 with the biggest gains coming from the 16th hole. The upward trend also has some players wondering where the limit lands. The previous longest hole in U.S. Open history was the 667-yard 12th hole at Oakmont Country Club in 2007. No. 5 at the 2007 PGA Championship at Southern Hills played at 653 yards, and the 17th at the 2005 PGA Championship at Baltusrol extended to 650 yards from the back tees. Davis has insisted the 16th at Olympic is not a gimmick or a way to level the playing field for the shorter hitters. Instead, it's simply meant to be a true three swings to the green, where shaping shots and placement are paramount. Even still, that might not be enough to stop the most daring drivers. "One thing I've learned playing out here," qualifier Patrick Cantlay said, "is somebody's always trying to reach it."

The Way Wasaga Was....by Joe Bickerstaff Beach BOOSTER strives to bring positive and good news to our readers... so with the sad news of us losing Pat Damaren this week... I think back to all the positive and good things she brought to Wasaga Beach. Wasaga Beach enjoyed Pat’s hospitality for years at the Dyconia Resort Hotel, as she worked hard to provide a wonderful atmosphere in both the Dining Room and the Lounge at the famous hotel. Pat’s welcoming smile made every visit to “The Dyc” feel like you were special. Dropping in to catch up on the latest news from John, as he told his stories of the past and the possible future of Wasaga Beach, was always made more rewarding as Pat made sure the surroundings looked great and that you were greeted with her friendly hello and for some... a hug. Pat’s attention to detail showed as all appreciated the renovations to the Dining Room as new lighting, seating, tables and hardwood floors were installed to make it even more appealing. The view of the river was enjoyed by all of the regulars and new comers who enjoyed The Dyconia for its famous Prime Rib and many other great items not available elsewhere in The Beach. John and Pat working together made all guests happy with the great meals served in this famous Wasaga Beach establishment. Renovations in The Lounge at the Dyconia also showed Pat’s attention to detail, as it was a welcoming place for all to enjoy a drink and of course the famous lunch specialties. Pat’s friendly smile was always seen, often looking on as John was on one of his infamous rants about The Beach! After John and Pat sold the Dyconia Resort, Pat’s talents were taken to the Wasaga Sands where she continued to wow people with her great, special buffets and the regular menu items at the Golf Club. Pat’s catering experience was always sought after as she mastered all types of events, including beachfront weddings. After a long and hard fought battle with cancer, we lost Pat on Monday, June 11, 2011. Pat will be remembered for many things, including her good nature, her generosity, her wonderful smile and laugh... but in my mind, I will always fondly remember her at The Dyconia... making the historic Wasaga Beach hotel a happy place to be! Patti is survived by her husband John, brothers Mario and Joe, and sister Lois.

WASAGA SAGA A History of Wasaga Beach By Thelma Morrison email: archive@wasagabeach.com (Proceeds go to Wasaga Beach Archives)

Real Estate Bench Mark by Glenn Cunningham Casino Wasaga Opens! The Newest 5 Star Resort Hotel is filled to capacity! That could be a future headline. Is it a good thing? We have been looking to have a high end Hotel to raise the bar of accommodations as well as bring more money to town for our tourist industry. How will it affect your Real Estate Portfolio? Think about it. Having a Casino will draw folks to our area for all kinds of activities. While visiting they will enjoy other entertainment, accommodations, food and drink; year round. We will have the creation of jobs within our community. We would have the creation of tax dollars from the buildings and hotels associated with the Casino as well as housing those service providers. Construction; these facilities have to be built! Jobs again, and yes a lot of these jobs will be taken by people from outside our community, so they too will need to eat, and in some cases have a place to stay: year round. Some will like it here and stay. These kinds of facilities are not a 2 month build. All of these construction jobs pay higher than retail and tourist service jobs meaning more disposable income. Jobs at the town, whether it is Planning, Public Works or Administration, these are all well paid jobs required to look after an increase in growth. This creates a demand on residential real estate and will require an even greater variety of housing styles. We may even get some higher end beachfront condos! To the other end of the spectrum there will need to be considerations made for affordable housing for those who have less. That should be part of the plan. Will this creation of jobs and new housing especially by working people who have families, create enough demand that a High School could be in the future for Wasaga Beach? If so: again more well paid jobs not only teachers but the services that go with the educational facilities. (while writing this column, this particular item had a big impact on my thinking and may be one good justification) Real Estate is a funny subject, everyone thinks that a good real estate market is one where prices increase quickly and demand is hot. That is anyone who owns some! Under that definition a Casino would be good for Real Estate. Jobs, especially higher paid jobs, growth and a more visible community will create demand and demand will increase prices and stimulate more growth. So is a Casino the right thing for Wasaga Beach? What about our social and moral obligations to society? Who are the people behind these operations? How many lives are ruined by gambling? Lots of questions still to be answered, but I challenge you; sit down and express your thoughts, try to be objective. If you’re like me, you may not have all the answers but I “bet” you’ll have a little different outlook, one way or the other. Check us out on Facebook and have a fantastic weekend!
