Every Tuesday in August, residents and visitors to the community are welcome to join us for an entertaining evening of both traditional and modern jazz music. Holly Haire-Ellis, Special Events Coordinator for the Town of Wasaga Beach commented that “We tried to focus on modern jazz while still providing spectators with some of their traditional favourites as well as keeping the majority of the performers from the Georgian Triangle area.” The line-up for the jazz series includes: August 14th – Regal Jazz Band August 21st – The Michael Grace Quartet August 28th – The Joe Huron Quartet The performances take place at either the Oakview Wood Gazebo or the Rotary Band Shell both located at 1742 Mosley Street from 7:00pm until 9:00pm. Two centuries later, the War of 1812 remains a significant event in both the development of Canadian and American national identities and the relationship between our two countries. In June 1812, the United States declared war on Great Britain. As part of the British Empire, the Canadian colonies were drawn into this two and half year conflict. The combined efforts of English and French speaking militias, First Nations allies, together with British military forces succeeded in defeating the American invasion. This shattered U.S. President Thomas Jefferson’s 1812 prediction that the “acquisition of Canada…. will be a mere matter of marching”. The Treaty of Ghent ended the War in 1814 re-establishing the original border between Canada and the United States. The First Nations peoples’ dreams of a separate nation were not realized. The heroic efforts during the War of 1812 helped shape our country. Today we celebrate two centuries of peaceful co-existence along the longest border in the world. I love sports and I love the Olympics. I totally buy into the nationalist pride and watching all the competition. It’s great in part, like the World Cup, because it happens only once every four years and the competitors are fighting for, with many of them, their once chance at athletic greatness. The Olympics have also become a huge business with enormous facilities and a production that utter astounds the mind in terms of planning and preparation.What I always enjoy looking at are the Olympic Medals. This year’s 2012 London Olympic medals were designed by David Watkins and produced by the Royal Mint. The medals are larger than any that have ever been made, weighting in at 375 and 400 grams. They’re 85 millimeters in diameter and are 7 millimeters thick. They’re bigger than the Olympic medals from Beijing. Here are their respective compositions: * Gold: 92.5% silver, 1.24% gold, and 6.26% copper. * Silver: 92.5% silver, 7.5% copper * Bronze: 97% copper, 0.5% tin, 2.5% zinc. Just a quick reminder that it is less than two weeks ‘til Wasaga under Siege –“A War of 1812 Experience” taking place August 17th, 18th & 19th . Wasaga under Siege will be celebrating its 10th year taking place at Nancy Island Historic Site in beautiful Wasaga Beach, Ontario. This year will also mark another historic special event as Nancy Island Historic Site has constructed a brand new Welcome Centre to mark the bicentennial and the Grand Opening took place back in May and of course is now fully operational for Wasaga under Siege. Pre-registration helps us plan logistical needs such as food, drinks, parking, volunteers, etc. in order to ensure we accommodate everyone and of course any special needs requests. Wasaga Beach Boy a Mascot for Soccer Game Toronto FC vs. Liverpool Harrison Eldred was a mascot on July 21st for the Toronto FC vs. Liverpool FC soccer game in Toronto. Harrison 7, attends Worsley Elementary School in Wasaga Beach, he will be starting Grade 3 in the Fall. His family moved from the UK to Wasaga Beach in 2007, Liverpool has been the team his father has supported since a small boy. Harrison plays soccer for Collingwood United, where he is part of their Under 8 All Star Team and he is also a member of the Kick Start Pro Zone soccer program run by local coach Andy Dunwoody that train all year round. Harrison had a fantastic time meeting the players, he was not overwhelmed by the 35,000 fans that greeted him as he walked onto the playing field and he was very proud to wear the Toronto colours for the day, despite the family loyalties to Liverpool. Both Harrison and Dad were happy with the result on the day as Toronto and Liverpool shared the honours with a 1-1 tie. Collingwood United coach Mike Gallo organized Harrison's special day. Harrison is the fair haired boy in the centre of the photo. Harrison accompanied Toronto's number 5 Ashtone Morgan.

Recent research has shown that people participate in arts and culture in four primary ways: they attend programs and events, encourage their children to participate, make or perform art as amateurs, or support the arts through donations of time and money. The more ways people participate and the more often, the more likely they are to engage in other activities that support community life. Research also shows that eighty percent of those who attend live programs and events also participate in arts and culture in other ways. It is also known that as people rise up the ladder of commitment to support arts and culture so do they engage and create a vibrant community that translates into great Quality of Life and economic prosperity. So where am I going with this? Well let’s talk about Mark Crowe of the Stonebridge Building Group. Mark has a vision for the Wasaga Beach Blues Festival which will take place here in Wasaga Beach this August 24th to 26th, 2012. He is in it for the long haul. He brought in Chuck Jackson as director of the festival. Apart from being a famous award winning Canadian vocalist and musician on the Blues scene, Chuck has experience in building Blues Festivals. He was co-founder of the “Annual Southside Shuffle Blues & Jazz Fest” in Mississauga/Port Credit that is 14 years in the running and now brings in a whopping $3 Million to the community and businesses each year. Let’s talk about Joe Bickerstaff Joe also has a vision. It’s all about recapturing the fun, excitement and family values we celebrated on Wasaga Beach’s Main Street in yesteryear. Joe Bickerstaff also is in it for the long haul. The first Annual Back to the Beach Festival, August 11 and 12, 2012, is Joe’s creation and he has invested his time and money to demonstrate that we as locals can control our own destiny and make it happen rather than bring in some Toronto operator that will come in for a week, bring in outside vendors, and strip money out of the community and leave. And then there is the Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival. It was originated to run in the shoulder season, create significant video marketing collateral that will feature our great community and promote it to prospective new comer residents and visitors from around the world. While in the process of telling the world what a great place we live in, it is providing a cultural venue for our local performers, artists and artisans to share their work with our community and generate entertainment for our residents and economic returns for our businesses. There are synergies abound in this effort. All we have to do as Wasagians is support these efforts. They are home grown and have the true potential to sustain themselves through community support, volunteerism, help, involvement and commitment. If we all came together to support these valiant efforts we will build a great community that generations of Wasagians can be very proud of for years to come. Beach Booster is certainly here to help. The Collingwood Life Saving Station In 1855, Collingwood was the most important port on Georgian Bay. The best water route to the west, old Hen and Chickens boasted of a railway, the Ontario, Simcoe and Huron, and an excellent harbour filled with ships. Collingwood had fairer prospects at the mid-point of the 19th century than any town in Canada. What the town didn’t have was safety. Storms out on Georgian Bay took their toll while lifesaving equipment was out of the question. Until 1885 that is. Following the tragedy of the steamer Asia, Dr. John Platt had been campaigning in the House of Commons for the construction of life-saving stations around the Great Lakes. The first was built at Cobourg on Lake Ontario in 1882. Three years later, the respected boat builder Patrick Doherty became Collingwood’s first federally appointed coxswain. The Collingwood Life Saving Station, the only one ever built on Georgian Bay, consisted of six men hand-picked by Doherty. They were mostly fishermen who could be easily alerted by a flag or gun to launch their 25-foot Dobbins selfrighting lifeboat and battle their way through waves and surf to rescue sailors at peril on the bay. Each man was paid a dollar and a half per bimonthly drill that meant launching the boat, practicing artificial respiration, and maintaining the station. They went out in all weather, in the dark of night or on days when the wind was raging. But, by the end of the First World War, the wireless was common on most ships, the days of the schooner were over, and shipping traffic in decline. By 1938, only Point Pelee on Lake Erie still had an active life saving station.

The big takeaway from Wednesday's press conferences at the PGA Championship? The course is long, paspalum is true, and it's as hard as ever to win a major. Here are some highlights from the day's pressers: ERNIE ELS Fresh off his with at The Open, Els talked about his new-found calm, his relationship with Adam Scott, and what sort of player has the advantage at a rain-soaked Kiawah. Q. How would you describe the way you felt, your emotions, whatever, since playing the back nine at Olympic Club, and if it was calm, where did that come from? Els: I think just being more secure of what you're doing and basically my routine was really good. You know, and I feel whenever you have a good routine, the pre-shot routine into your golf shots, and you're clear in your mind of what you want to do, there's not too many things flying around in your head. I was just more secure of what I wanted to do. And I think that obviously started at the U.S. Open, I felt that, and obviously it was a lot better at The Open. Q. Do you feel you have had and will have the level of credit for winning The Open this year, or do you think what happened with Adam could become a dominant story in some ways, and that would be unfortunate? Els: I think you're going to remember what Adam did. There's no two ways about it. And then hopefully people remember the putts that I made, because I still shot 32 on the back nine to give Adam something to think about. You know, I think for the short term, probably they are going to think about Adam's mistakes that he made, and I think long term, eventually my name is going to stay on the Jug (chuckling). Q. Along those lines, I know you spoke with Adam Sunday at Lytham; have you spoken at all with him since then? Els: Yes, we have. We've spoken. We stayed in the same hotel last week and saw him a couple of times. I'm actually playing nine holes with him this afternoon. So as I say, I've known Adam since he's come out here ten years ago, and we have got a pretty good, close relationship. He's a good friend of the family and of mine. You know, if he needs any help to win a major, I'll definitely give it to him; if he needs any encouragement, I'll give it to him. He's a great friend. Q. Does anybody who cannot hit the ball 300 not have a chance in this thing because of the softness in the fairways? Els: Yeah, I mean, everybody's got a chance in the field, but I think it definitely helps the super long bombers, Bubba, Dustin, Tiger, the real long guys that can fly it 320. Those guys can reach all four par 5s now, where I can hit it 300, but I can't fly it 320. So I'm probably going to lay up on all of the par 5s. Doesn't take me out of the tournament, but you know, it definitely gives those real super long bombers a great advantage around this golf course now. There's no run out there. It's just plugging where it is.

Roy Wilson..Official Town Crier for Town of Wasaga Beach Roy became a member of the Toronto Police Force (as it was then known) in 1948. While waiting to be accepted as a police officer, he worked in what was known as the ' Purple Gang' enforcing anti-gambling and anti prostitution laws in the area of Elizabeth and Dundas Street West. After becoming a police officer, he was assigned to Old Number 2 Division at Bay and Dundas Streets. After 2 Station was demolished, he was transferred to #1 Division on Court Street, then later to Old 11 Division at London and Markham Streets (later became 13 Division) where he served in the detective office. He was later transferred to the Safety Bureau under Inspector Charles Pearsall and while there he developed Blinky The Talking Police Car. He patented it and when he retired from the Force in 1975, he turned the patent over to Chief of Police Harold Adamson.After leaving the Force, he worked for the Ontario Safety Council and lectured trucking companies throughout Ontario. He was later contacted by ex-Inspector Fred Wooton 1940's who was head of Security for the BlueJays Baseball team and offered a job in security. He worked there for Pat Gillick and Paul Beaston. Roy had a cottage at Wasaga Beach and in 1984, he decided to move here full time with his wife Catherine. They demolished the cottage and built a home on the property. In 1998 Wasaga Beach realized the need for a town crier. Roy entered the competition and won over a number of other 1950's candidates. He is still active as Town Crier presenting Official Proclamations, appearing at special events, opening ceremonies, anniversaries, weddings, birthdays exhibitions and special occasions. As a Member of the Ontario Guild of Town Criers, he appears in Town Crier competitions worldwide.
