Canadian Citizenship Ceremony Impressive On Tuesday of last week, Wasaga Beach resident Crystal Estrada became a Canadian Citizen at the citizenship ceremony held in Scarborough. Crystal along with 89 other new Canadians were given the Country’s quintessential experience. There was the Anthem, the Flag, a Mountie in a Red Tunic , the Oath in two languages and, of course, a cup of Tim’s for afterwards. After they raised their right hand and swore their Oath to Country and Queen Elizabeth II, they could take their first sip as Canadians. Looking around at the 90 new citizens, Judge Philip Gaynor, who performed the ceremony, called the group “a snapshot of Canada.” Gaynor, who has a bit of an Irish brogue himself, told the new Canadians their experience didn’t differ much from his own. “I know from personal experience it is not easy to leave the land of your birth,” admits Judge Gaynor. “I have come to love this country and I am confident you will love it also.” From the new citizens’ comments, it doesn’t sound like the judge has much to fear in that regard. A few were given a chance to speak before the ceremony, telling friends, families and officials in attendance about their feelings. Judge Gaynor told the group while being Canadian offers one many rights, it also means taking on more responsibility as well. “Being a Canadian citizen means more than getting a piece of paper,” he explains. “It is your commitment to build a better and stronger Canada. To respect the laws, to respect each other and to treat everyone with dignity.” The Ceremony, which lasted for an hour and a half, went off without a hitch under the direction of Richard Lacombe, Clerk of the Ceremony. Congratulations to Crystal on becoming a Canadian Citizen ...Welcome! This was the first Citizenship Ceremony I have witnessed and I was totally impressed. Just a thought...wouldn’t it be nice for Wasaga Beach to host a Citizenship Ceremony sometime in the future..it can be done. by Bill Frieday.

It’s Back to School Time!!
Science Lesson Miss Jones had been giving her second-grade students a lesson on science. She had explained about magnets and showed how they would pick up nails and other bits of iron. Now it was question time, and she asked, “My name begins with the letter ‘M’ and I pick up things. What am I?” A little boy on the front row proudly said, “You’re a mother!”
Misbehaving Little Johnny had finished his summer vacation and gone back to school. Two days later his teacher phoned his mother to tell her that he was misbehaving. “Wait a minute,” she said. “I had Johnny with me for three months and I never called you once when he misbehaved.”
Class Picture A teacher had been after her pupils to bring in their 2 dollars for the class picture. Upset over the tardiness, one day she got up in front of the class and said, “Class, think how much you’re going to treasure this picture 25 years from now. You will pull it out and say, ‘There’s my friend, Julie. She’s a lawyer now. There’s my friend Robert. He’s a doctor’” Then a voice from the back of the room interrupted, “And there’s my teacher. She’s dead.”

Point of View Wow! What an experience! Beach BOOSTER is very pleased to have presented the inaugural Back to The Beach Festival on August 11 & 12. The idea of a family friendly festival, held on our historic section of Main Street at Beach Area One had been on my wish list for many years. Since the fire of 2007 cleared most of the buildings that had been a part of so many memories for generations, I have thought of many ways to bring folks back to this abandoned stretch of Main Street. Until something more permanent is done on this wonderful space at our Main Beachfront, the idea of a fun and exciting Street Festival seemed like a good option. As there was much encouragement and suggested sponsorship to help with such an endeavour, Beach BOOSTER , with the valuable guidance and help from Wasaga Beach Special Events, presented the concept to Town Council. The Town agreed to support the event with many “in kind” contributions and a much appreciated dollar amount. Although Beach BOOSTER has been proud to present several very successful events in The Beach and of course, sponsored many great events in our community... nothing would compare to organizing Back to The Beach. We put together a Street Festival and invited not only the entire town of Wasaga Beach... but all north of the GTA that had fond memories of Wasaga Beach! After our summer of glorious sunshine, the weekend of Back to The Beach had the weather folks forecasting a bad one. As I anxiously listened to the weather news, one of our local news reports started by saying “This will be the first stay at home weekend of the summer”. Regardless, our team moved forward through the driving rain and threatening skies on the Friday to set up the towering equipment for some of our acts as the Town’s stage took shape on Main Street. As promised, our set up provided some small components of what was once on our historic Main Street, while providing fun and music that I’m sure brought back some memories to all. We provided World Class entertainment with amazing acrobats, the artistic skills of Arial Silks, fantastic local live bands and internationally recognized professional DJs. The weather proved to be fickle with blue skies and warm sun during our first day, rain that washed out our Street Dance on Saturday night, but on Sunday all enjoyed a pleasant day of sun until late in the day. If some people stayed away, it was because of the forecast... not the actual weather. I truly want to thank everyone who took part in our Back to The Beach festival and I hope you enjoyed what we created for two days on this barren stretch of our Main Street. I thank the many friends, neighbours and strangers who took the time to find me on that busy street to tell me your thoughts and provide some encouragement. It truly was a rewarding experience, bringing folks Back to The Beach to enjoy some family friendly fun and entertainment to our Main Beach area. Yes! There will be a Back to The Beach in 2013 and we will assure that the weather forecast is as wonderful as a day at the beach! Thanks to all who supported the inaugural Back to The Beach festival! Joe Bickerstaff
