Point of View From early May we enjoyed great summer weather here in The Beach and even September has provided us with lots of sunshine and blue skies, but all of us feel that fall is on its way. Our busy streets once again are returning to a more normal pace, as the summer visitors retreat. Fall in The Beach can not only be one of the most beautiful of seasons, but also a time when perhaps we can slow down, take a deep breath of the fresh, fall air… and prepare for our upcoming and hopefully busy winter season. At Beach BOOSTER Group, we are excited about our many projects planned for over the next few months. Of course our Wasaga Beach Home and Recreation Show is on this weekend (September 22 & 23) at the RecPlex, but that’s just the beginning of our post summer plans!
All in The Beach are invited to our fun and exciting Official Launch Party for the all new, all local Beach BOOSTER Radio! We are also eager to be a part of Snowman Mania for 2013 as we enjoyed participating last year with several special events. Beach BOOSTER is looking forward to again working with the award winning Wasaga Snowmobile Club to promote safe and fun snowmobiling in and around Wasaga Beach, as we appreciate the importance of this winter activity to our local economy! With presenting and sponsoring so many upcoming events, we know the timing of our previously mentioned Beach BOOSTER Radio Launch is perfect, to give us another local medium to complement this publication, our Promotional Products, Special Events and our community friendly transit stop benches. WHEN I SAY I'M BROKE I'M BROKE! A little old lady answered a knock on the door one day, to be confronted by a well-dressed young man carrying a vacuum cleaner. Good morning,' said the young man. 'If I could take a couple minutes of your time, I would like to demonstrate the very latest in high-powered vacuum cleaners... 'Go away!' said the old lady. ''I'm broke and haven't got any money!'' and she proceeded to close the door. Quick as a flash, the young man wedged his foot in the door and pushed it wide open... ''Don't be too hasty!'' he said. ''Not until you have at least seen my demonstration..'' And with that, he emptied a bucket of horse manure onto her hallway carpet. 'Now, if this vacuum cleaner does not remove all traces of this horse manure from your carpet, Madam, I will personally eat the remainder.'' The old lady stepped back and said, ''Well let me get you a fork, cause they cut off my electricity this morning."

Changing Wasaga Beach Lives Gary Cerantola; gary@beachbooster.com Carpe Diem – and Seize the Day Tripper We are hearing about how the great summer weather we experienced in Wasaga Beach this season did not positively improve the prospects for our accommodation operators. Well maybe there is more to Bob Dylan’s notion of “The Times They Are a-Changin” Google uses search queries from its Maps product to determine the most popular summer destinations for Canadians and a host of other countries. This year in all of Canada, Niagara Falls was the most searched landmark, followed by Wasaga Beach. This is exciting news for Wasaga Beach to be right beside a destination that has been promoting itself for eons. Ontario Parks just placed a notice on their Facebook page in the last few days stating that Wasaga Beach Provincial Park has the highest day visitation rate (1.495M visits per year) across all of its provincial parks. So, how come this does not add up? This prompted me to do some research on day trippers. I found some interesting conclusions made based on UK tourism trends that may explain some of the observations we are making in Wasaga Beach. Over 50% of tourism revenue in the UK now comes from day visitors and one of the biggest reasons for this is the state of the economy. Yet, the focus remains on securing longer-term visitors – from mini-breaks to holidays I think it’s a no brainer to understand that day-trippers are very low spenders. So efforts to try to motivate this market segment into overnight stays to boost accommodation, food, retail sales and admission revenues may not produce the returns businesses would like to see. The majority of daytime activities in rural areas tend to be bathing, water sports, walking, cycling and sightseeing which generally involve low levels of expenditure, with many visitors buying little more than an occasional ice cream or lunch. The research I looked into suggested that day trippers want an attractive setting or environment and quality local food and drink (48%), enjoy a wide choice of things to do (37%), want to try a new experience (34%), and want to experience something out of the ordinary (29%). Live performances and cultural interest were the next most important factors that caught their interest. One of the most significant statistics is that over half of all day-trippers are interested in heritage and choose to visit a historic site. So where does this leave us for now? If we seize the day we can take heed of the research findings and build on the attributes that will create the best experience for day trippers and make them want to come back for more, especially when times are better and they have more disposable income to make their stay longer. From a heritage perspective, Wasaga Beach has an opportunity to rally around providing an experience to remember for day trippers during the 2013 August 16th, 17th & 18th – War of 1812 Tall Ship Rendezvous and Wasaga under Siege events. In the meantime, we can take a good hard look at our “Beach One and Two” vision along with our overall Wasaga Beach Tourism Strategy and assess whether we have the ingredients to attract more than day trippers. Beach Booster is certainly here to help. Send me your thoughts. Please email me at Gary@beachbooster.com
The Church and the Community Rural churches are monuments to the determination of the settlers who came to Simcoe County to live. Not only did they bring faith to the community, they provided an opportunity to gather, worship and enjoy the friendship of neighbours and fellow members of the congregation. The rural church was a social centre that provided an opportunity to exchange a little gossip and get caught up on the local news. On warm, pleasant days, the congregation would linger long after the service. Midweek prayer meetings brought the community back together again. Early in the history of a rural church came the Ladies Aid group who helped to raise needed funds. The favourite way to do this was the fowl supper – a turkey dinner with all the trimmings including home baked pies. Summer brought garden parties and church picnics. These were events not to be missed and came complete with ball games, horseshoes, relay races and guessing games. And there was always a bountiful supper that ended with generous helpings of homemade ice cream. And then there was the Box Social. Each female attending a box social was expected to decorate a box and fill it with delicious food for two. An auctioneer would call for bids for the decorated boxes and a young man with an eye for a particular girl, would do his best to be the highest bidder. It was an embarrassing moment when a rival outbid her suitor. Over the course of a year, a rural church would play host not just to Sunday services but to Bible readings, Christmas caroling, Sunday School concerts, pantomimes, and anniversary church services that doubled as homecoming reunions. But soon the automobile made it easier to travel and the rural church began to fade away, closing its doors with considerable regret.

Call for a Tee Time: 705-429-2791 What a great day for former Wasaga Beach Mayor Walter Borthwick on September 13th. Walter (Pictured right) not only won his Flight with a stunning 43 on the the back nine (played first) he then proceeded to have a nice 43 on the front nine. He also was closest to the Pin on #11 hole which won him more prize coupons. On top of all that, he had the best "skins" on 4 holes on the competitive back nine for some more loot. Rumor has it that Walter is considering giving Group Golf lessons at the Sands...line up everyone!
The next time you play golf you obviously want to hit a long, straight drive off the 1st tee. Well, today I'm going to give you 2 simple things to help you do exactly that. The first thing you can must do to hit at least a longer drive off the 1st is to do some active stretches before you tee off. Why? Because it's been found that golfers who do this hit the first drive over 10 yards longer than golfers who do not warm up.You can do simple calisthenics for your warm up like star jumps, toe touches, body twists etc. But whatever you do make sure it uses as much of the body as possible.Do this and you will hit a longer drive compared to if you hadn't done the warmup. The next important aspect you must be aware of in order to hit a long straight drive off the 1st hole is how you tee up the golf ball. You see, if you suffer from a slice problem then you need to know that by teeing the ball up higher than normal it will help you to fix your slice. Equally if you have a hook problem you can simply tee the ball lower to help rectify this problem. So let's sum up the 2 simple things you can do to help you hit a long, straight shot off the 1st tee the next time you play golf. The first thing I mentioned was the need to warm up. Do this for at least 5 minutes before you tee off. The second thing I suggested was to take particular notice of how you're teeing up the ball. For example, if you suffer from a slice or a hook problem then when you're teeing up your golf ball do so either higher or lower than you normally would, according to which swing flaw you have, to help you hit a straighter, longer drive. If you do these 2 simple things you're bound to hit a better drive off the 1st and that will help you to enjoy the rest of the round more. Tales of our Neighbors and Friends
by Joe Bickerstaff This in part is an article printed in The Stayner Sun, February 20, 1969. It’s interesting to see that some folks were looking for an official plan back then… as perhaps we still are now. The author is unknown. Yes Virginia, There is an official plan! Yes, indeed! Virginia, your friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age - they do not believe except what they see. There is a plan for the development of Wasaga Beach. This was made known Tuesday night when Council of the Village of Wasaga Beach passed a motion approving in Photo shows building at south east corner principle what is called the final of Main St. and Mosley St. that was torn draft of the Wasaga Beach down as per plan Improvement Plan – stage one. Through the efforts of Art Evans, member of the legislature representing the Wasaga Beach area, a meeting between Council and representatives of four government departments involved in the development was held Monday. Council was asked to approve or reject this draft of the entire plan. Council did decide that the basic plan was good, but maintains its position of having a direct “say” in the development of these plans where it is within the boundaries of the municipality. The first major step will be the adoption of an official plan for the area. This type of planning is the same that is being introduced, under provincial government pressure, in all municipalities. Without an official plan, approved by the department of municipal affaires, even government agencies such as the Department of Lands and Forests cannot really enact its role in development. So first must come the official plan. With is adoption, all will be in the open. Second on the report is the problem of traffic off the beach front. The proposed plan, which will probably be the first of the four stages to be implemented, is to have what could be called a huge traffic circle, with three lane roads. Demolition of the building at the south-east corner of Mosley and Main Streets is a start of this plan. Also in the planning stage is the problem of parking. The Department of Lands and Forests has already acquired sufficient property to make available the parking spaces for over 4,000 cars off the beach front. The eventual plans consider the elimination of beachfront traffic and the collection of fees for parking replacing the admission charge to the beach. This might well be considered as a progressive step as it, presumably, would also eliminate the side street parking now being used. The one item that we are pleased about in the draft plan was that the province was not trying to buy up the entire beach area from the beach front to the river and blocks back the rest of the way. We have had visions, since the department of Lands and Forests started to buy up land, that eventually this land would have to be leased back to such monsters as the Hilton and Sheridan chains of hotels and motels who, with their millions would then construct their own little empires in the area where the little business man was previously able to make a living. Apparently this in not in the long range scheme of the government for the beach. However, whatever comes out of this mess finally, if the village is given it’s hearing on all developments, should be for the good of all. -30-
Sherry Holland and Jamie Hendry They are familiar faces around town as over the years, both Sherry and Jamie have made a lot of friends in The Beach! Sherry has lived in Wasaga Beach her entire life. She attended Byrnes Avenue Public School, like so many of the “real beach kids”. While at school, Sherry had a summer job at Cedar Grove Camp Ground, then worked at the Galaxy Red & White Supermarket (located on what is now 45thStreet, close to Wasaga Sands Drive) and in later years started her first full time job at The Beacon where she worked from 1978 until 1990. More recently, Sherry has worked part time at the Collingwood Nursing Home where she continues to volunteer when time allows. Jamie Hendry (Sherry’s daughter) also grew up in The Beach and went to Byrnes Avenue Public School and was there when the school’s name was changed to Worsley Elementary. Jamie worked at The Beacon in the early 90‘s and then took a full time job with a cleaning company in Collingwood. More recently Jamie worked at the River Road Animal Hospital where she enjoyed the staff members and becoming friends with so many people… and of course her love of animals showed as she cared for the many furry friends she met there. As her full time position ended (she was filling in for a co-worker on maternity leave) Jamie still helps out at the hospital whenever she can. Recently Sherry and Jamie were discussing full time job opportunities and suddenly the idea of working together and offering their professional housekeeping abilities to their neighbours, friends and family here in The Beach! S & J Housekeeping was born! Sherry and Jamie’s good nature and professionalism will shine as they continue to make customers happy with their Housekeeping services. They are fully bonded and insured. Sherry can be reached at 705-429-3454 and Jamie at 705-441-6965.
