A Must See Christmas Window Marilyn Ruttan’s “Holiday Village” Display Night and Day in front windows of ReMax Office in Riverbend Plaza until January 5th. Marilyn said she has too many pieces to display in her home, she had to move the display to the office windows.

Paying it Forward: A Thanksgiving Story but Good for Christmastime Too! This week, Kate Phillips of Total Wealth Coaching contributed a guest post about her most memorable Thanksgiving – one that didn’t go as planned!

“You can’t pay anyone back for what has happened to you, so you try to find someone you can pay forward.” -An anonymous Alcoholics Anonymous spokesperson, as quoted in the Christian Science Monitor in 1944. Do you have a favorite Thanksgiving memory? As much as I love gathering with family and friends to enjoy a delicious holiday feast, one of my nowfavorite Thanksgiving memories came disguised (or, at least, part of it) as a Terrible, Awful, No Good, Very Bad Day. After enduring years of long Thanksgiving ferry lines to commute to my parents’ home, I decided to short-cut the process by boarding the ferry as a walk-on passenger and get picked up on the other side. Unfortunately, hundreds of other holiday travelers had the same idea, and the ferry passenger parking lot was full to overflowing, as was the street parking. I finally parked at a nearby mini-mall parking lot that was safely closed for the day, where other travelers were also parking. I grabbed my sweet potato dish and caught the ferry. Many hours later, I returned by way of the same ferry. It was dark, cold, rainy, and I was a bit perturbed that I hadn’t made a better mental note as to exactly where my car was parked. I wandered around the parking lot casually at first, then methodically up and down the now-sparse rows of cars, but with no luck. Finally a couple with two children pulled up in a four-door sedan. “Are you looking for your car?” “Uh-huh,” I answered. “How did you know?” They explained that a grumpy property owner (probably having a Terrible, Awful, No Good, Very Bad Day) decided to TOW all of the cars parked at his CLOSED business near the ferry dock! Many dozens of foot passengers returning from Thanksgiving meals and visits had discovered themselves stranded, their cars towed to a neighboring town where they had been promptly impounded.

This family had just reclaimed their own car, assisted by another stranger who had endured the same fate. They had then driven back to help someone else find their missing car, where they found me wandering around in the rain. They gave me the number of the towing company and waited while I confirmed my car’s whereabouts. Then they insisted on giving me a ride to the towing yard, several miles away, to get my car. (Their own rescuers had done the same for them.) Forty-five minutes and $196 later (but no taxi fees), I was reunited with my car. As bummed as I was about the car being towed, I was so grateful for my Thanksgiving angels, and so happy to have my very own, warm car back! My rescuers refused to accept a tip, but suggested that I could “pay forward” the help I had received. (“Pay it forward” is a centuries-old concept of returning a favor “forward” to someone else in need, rather than paying it “back,” and was popularized by a poignant movie of the same name.) It was very late now and I was still a long drive from home, but knew what I must do next. I drove back to the same parking lot. The next ferry had come and gone, and sure enough, another frustrated family – complete with cold, tired kids – was roaming around in the rain. “Are you looking for your car?” I asked. “I know where it is – and I can take you to it!” It’s easy to be thankful with our families around the turkey table, a little harder to be thankful when it’s late, you’re tired, you’re cold, it’s dark and raining, and your CAR is MISSING! Initially, I was sure I would remember this experience as an alltime holiday low point, “The Year My Car Got Towed on Thanksgiving.” But what remains in my memory about this Thanksgiving was not the missing car, but the contagious “pay it forward” attitude of strangers. That is what I’ll never forget. Yes, it was the year my car got towed, but more than that. It was “The Year When Stranded Strangers Helped Each Other Out.” This Christmas, many families will gather to share a meal, perhaps some prayers and to reflect on the people and things they are grateful for. Some circumstances lend themselves easily to gratitude; other circumstances require us to be a person of gratitude, regardless of the situation. In challenging times, giving thanks requires the ability to see the silver lining in the clouds, spin a bit straw into gold, and trust that there is always a purpose for everything, even pain. Let’s see how we can “pay forward” the gifts that we’ve received this year. And please continue to remember those recovering from natural disasters around the world, where this holiday represents an opportunity to express and appreciate what is truly important. We at Beach BOOSTER are so thankful for the friends, colleagues, clients, and every reader who stops by this Publication. We wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, much prosperity, and a heart full of gratitude this holiday and all year long.

Point of View Christmas Shopping. Keep it local! We are lucky to have a great selection of shops and services in Wasaga Beach! It has not always been that way and I'm sure there are many Beach Folks who remember when we could not purchase a pair of socks in town! Our local businesses are run by our family, our friends and neighbours and many are as creative as they are unique and we should all be rewarding their efforts by shopping locally. Perhaps some have already done all of their Christmas shopping, but for others… like me, still planning the “big shop”, remind yourselves of the benefits of shopping locally. Here is a Top Ten List of reasons to shop here in our community. 1. Do the Math Factor in your gas, your meals, or shipping fees, not to mention the long line ups at the malls, traffic congestion, is it worth it? 2. Keep the Dollars in Our Local Economy When you shop in our community, you simultaneously create jobs, fund more services like social and emergency services. 3. Support Community Businesses The well being of a community benefits when you shop locally. Our area businesses build strong neighbourhoods by sustaining communities, contributing to local charities, supporting sports teams, service clubs, school activities and the list goes on. 4. Save the Environment Reduce your environmental footprint and save money at the same time. You're not burning fuel and contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. 5. Keep Our Town Unique We have a variety of unique specialty shops and products in The Beach. These businesses are an integral part of the distinctive character of our area. Our tourism industry benefits from this. When people go on vacation they seek out destinations that offer them the sense of being someplace special! 6. Consider What Our Retailers Are Facing They purchased their stock six months ago hoping to sell it today, pay their employees, pay their taxes, heat and hydro, donate to charity, and hopefully pay themselves. 7. More Jobs and Wages Supporting our local merchants means more jobs and better wages for our community. 8. Get Better Service It is no secret that the people of Wasaga Beach are some of the friendliest people you will come across. Our area merchants take pride in hiring the right people. 9. Lots of Great Products With so many great stores, services, restaurants and artisans, the choices are endless. There is a broad range of products and services available plus all the top brand names. Gift Certificates from local businesses can be enjoyed by anyone on your gift list! 10. We love our Community – Let's Keep our Money Here We can encourage local prosperity by keeping our hard earned dollars in our local economy.

Merry Christmas to all and Happy Shopping! Please keep it local! Joe Bickerstaff

So naturally, I assumed you..... The light turned yellow, just in front of him. He did the right thing, stopping at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection. The tailgating woman was furious and honked her horn, screaming in frustration, as she missed her chance to get through the intersection, dropping her cell phone and makeup. As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer. The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up.. He took her to the police station where she was searched, fingerprinted, photographed, and placed in a holding cell. After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door. She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects. He said, "I'm very sorry for this mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, flipping off the guy in front of you and cussing a blue streak at him. I noticed the 'What Would Jesus Do' bumper sticker, the 'Choose Life' license plate holder, the 'Follow Me to SundaySchool' bumper sticker, and the chrome-plated Christian fish emblem on the trunk, so naturally.................................... I assumed you had stolen the car.”

“Keeping the Community Safe & Reducing Crime through Information Sharing” Snowmobile Safety “Part 1” Snowmobiling is a sport and like all sports there are rules and policies that govern and impact that sport. Three critical policies are; 1) the Criminal Code of Canada, 2) the Motorized Snow Vehicle Act of Ontario R.S.O. 1990 (MSVA) and 3) your local municipal bylaws that apply to the operation of this motor vehicle. As with the operation of all motor and non-motor vehicles common sense should be present and generally when it is not riders get hurt and sometimes killed. The MSVA is Provincial Legislation that applies to the Province of Ontario and gives municipalities in Ontario approval to enact bylaws that impact the operation of motor snow vehicles or more usually called snowmobiles in that jurisdiction. We find that the general knowledge of snowmobile enthusiasts in regards to laws that control their sport vary greatly and as such I would like to dispel some myths that are out there: Myth #1:Snowmobile operators can drink and drive and nothing can happen to them. Fact #1:Snowmobile operators who drink and drive face the same penalties under the Criminal Code of Canada for Impaired Operation, Excess 80 mgs. and Refusing to Provide a Breath Sample as would any driver of an automobile. That is if they don't have a collision first! Myth #2:Snowmobile operators can travel at any speed they want. Fact #2:Section 14(1) of the MSVA states a maximum speed limit for snow vehicles travelling on highway property where automobile's maximum speed is 50 km/hr or any public park is 20 km/hr. This section also states a maximum speed limit for snow vehicles travelling on highway property where automobile's maximum speed is greater than 50 km/hr or on trails is 50 km/hr. Myth #3:It's OK to drive a snow vehicle on the roadway when it is covered with snow. Fact #3:Section 5 and 8 of the MSVA prohibits the driving of snow vehicles on roadways, that is the portion of a road which is usually travelled by an automobile. The exception is a snow vehicle crossing a roadway at a 90 degree angle. Myth #4:Trail Patrol Officers from your local Snowmobile Club have no authorities. Fact #4:Members of your local Snowmobile club who are designated as Trail Wardens have the authority to lay trespass charges as outlined under the Trespass To Property Act. Trail Wardens are there to ensure the safe and enjoyable use of our snowmobile trails. Myth #5:S.T.O.P. Officers, who are they? Fact #5: S.T.O.P. Officers are highly training volunteers who are sworn in as Special Constables and Provincial Offense Officers to enforce the Motorized Snow Vehicle Act. They assist local police agencies to ensure the safe and enjoyable use of our snowmobile trails.. Remember to check out the next edition of beach BOOSTER for my “On Duty” column where I continue my discussion on snowmobile myths and facts.

WB Women’s Business Christmas Party 2012

Two events took place in Wasaga Beach during the month of November for Diabetes Awareness: World Diabetes Day and Music Heals the Soul for the Canadian Diabetes Association. Raising awareness of the seriousness of this disease and generate funds to find a cure for the three million Canadians living with Diabetes and six million people who have Pre-Diabetes. World Diabetes Day, November 14th, marks the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who, along with Dr.Charles Best discovered insulin. in 1921. In its 90th anniversary of the discovery of insulin, Canada is proud to have given the gift of insulin to the world. The Canadian Diabetes Association's mission is to lead the fight against diabetes by helping people with diabetes live healthy lives while working to find a cure. Through the efforts of Beach BOOSTER on World Diabetes Day, Wasaga Beach was added to the international list of community structures lit blue by lighting our Theatre Building on our Historic Nancy Island. The magical lighting of Nancy Island was a sight enjoyed by hundreds of Wasaga Beach residents and visitors alike. The vantage point from the Main Street Bridge was amazing. Music Heals the Soul was a fundraiser for the Canadian Diabetes Association spearheaded by Kevin DeAbreu and his wife Kathy Wadham. I had the pleasure of meeting this great couple and both are very passionate in raising funds for the Canadian Diabetes Association to find a cure for this disease. They thought of a fun way to raise money by having a guitar autographed for auction. It all started with the first guitar signed by Goddo that grew to eleven guitars autographed by top names in the Canadian music industry. All musicians gladly joined in to support the Canadian Diabetes Association such as Loverboy, April Wine, Anne Murray, Gordon Lightfoot, Blue Rodeo, Olivia Newton-John, Rush, Canadian country singers Terri Clark, Jason McCoy, Gord Bamford and Jamie Warren, The Good Brothers including their latest addition from David Wilcox. with the guitars to be auctioned. A banquet took place at Country Life Resort on Saturday, November 24th where once again the signed guitars were displayed on stage for everyone to view and be photographed. It was a wonderful evening where Music Heals the Soul. Thanks to all the volunteers on the committee for making the event memorable. Guitars are currently on eBay with each of their own reserve bids. According to Music Heals the Soul Facebook as of December 2nd a total of over 45 watchers on eBay for the Rush Guitar. For more information on Music Heals the Soul you can visit their website at: www.musichealsthesoul.ca and http://www.facebook.com/MusicHealsTheSoul.ca Dianna Chycki is a real estate sales representative for Century 21 Millennium Inc., Brokerage and a Member of Promote Wasaga.

Wouldn’t this be a great headline for Wasaga Beach? I’ll tell you a story about Juan Mann. In June 2004, an Australian who went by the alias of Juan Mann started giving out free hugs at his local shopping mall. Mann had reached a point of personal crisis in his own life: his parents had divorced and his fiancée had broken off their engagement. He realized that people were living increasingly disconnected lives. A You Tube video about Mann holding a FREE HUGS sign and offering free hugs in the shopping mall went viral and launched a worldwide free hug movement of people that were offering free hugs in shopping malls, on streets, virtually everywhere people gathered across the globe. This time of year is a unique time of year to look back and reflect on our lives and take stock of the good and the challenging moments we faced but in particular what we are so thankful for. Even though times are tougher with having to work harder for less, there is always someone else worse off than ourselves and there is plenty to be grateful for and thankful for. Just take a moment, get a blank page and write down a list of things that you are grateful & thankful for. Armed with this information you can then think about others that are less fortunate and think about what kind of an act of Christmas Kindness you can bestow on someone. Just think of it, if all of Wasaga Beach residents took on one single act of Christmas Kindness we could reach a proverbial tipping point and this effort could literally spread virally across, Ontario, Canada and the world. It could be as easy as; waking up in the morning and deciding to make a special effort to smile at everyone as you go through your day, wishing someone the very best in the season, complimenting someone on a job well done, giving that little gift of Christmas Kindness that would be meaningful to that person you know who would appreciate it in a very special way. This year let’s make a special effort to get back to the true meaning of Christmas spending quality time with family and friends, seeking fellowship around the table, celebrating the good things we have received in life and sharing of ourselves. We can make a difference in our own community like taking a food package to the Wasaga Beach Food Bank, helping the Independent Living Resource Centre in a small way of your own to be supportive community for people with disabilities. My Friend’s House, serving Wasaga Beach with the Emergency Shelter for Abused Women could use a helping hand. The Wasaga Beach CAT Rescue could use a little help as well. I am sure there are causes and community services near and dear to us that would give our personal act of Christmas Kindness special meaning and would help us carry a glow in our hearts during the holiday season. You have the power to make an act of Christmas Kindness go viral and make our world a better place. A small effort could go a long way. Beach Booster is certainly here to help. Let’s all have a great holiday season caring and sharing! Let me know what’s on your mind. Please email me at Gary@beachbooster.com

The Roads into Huronia There have been many roads leading into Simcoe County. At least five ancient routes made their way to Huronia. They included Champlain's canoe-route by way of the French River; Brule's route of 1615 through the Humber River valley and Lake Simcoe; the Iroquois warpath from Lake Ontario through the Trent System; the Algonquin Bluewater Trail skirting the shore of Lake Huron to enter Huronia from the west; and the Neutral or Brebeuf Trail by way of the Nottawasaga River. The first roads inside the county were First Nations trails, paved with trodden leaves and fallen logs that acted as bridges. Blazed by the Hurons, they were kept open by the Ojibway right up to the days of settlement. Such trails included the Nine Mile Portage, widened for wagons during the War of 1812 and the Coldwater Road that followed roughly the path of today's Highway 12. Soon, there was another vastly more important route - the Penetanguishene Road, a military pathway built for the government by William "Tiger" Dunlop. In1825 when it was linked with Governor Simcoe's Yonge Street, it opened a route from Lake Ontario to Lake Huron, one of the earliest and greatest of all settlement roads of Upper Canada. By the middle of the 19th century when the government began to grant money to build plank roads, one of the finest in Ontario had been built from Bradford to Bond Head. Tollgates were common for most of the century and the traveller of the 1860s paid his way through six of them on Yonge Street alone. Even more common in stagecoach days were taverns - 37 of them at one time on 35 miles of the Penetanguishene Road alone. And then came our modern highways and the past became history.

Welcome Sledders

New tech we are now using in our fleet

Welcome snowmobilers to Central Ontario trail riding. We are just in the process of putting the final touches to this seasons trail system. Signs are in place; trails have been repaired, bridges have been checked and over growth has been debrushed across our region. Groomers have been serviced, operators have had their training and the club house has been cleaned, so bring on the snow. As you can see a lot goes into the creation of the trail riding experience to have a safe sustainable trail system each season. The volunteers who make this all possible go the extra mile to make things run smoothly. Our collective thanks to all that work so hard to assure all that needs to be done gets done so we can open trails. Always ensure the trails are officially opened by checking our web site before venturing out. Please respect our landowners and stay on the marked trail. Without their support the interconnecting trail system of over 30,000K across the province would not be possible. Again this year we will be having weekly rides from the club house and events throughout the season. Check our web site at wasagasnowmobileclub.com for updates and trail conditions. Always remember for every mile of trail there are two miles of ditches. Ride in control and keep the rubber side down.

Wasaga Beach Lions Breakfast With Santa Breaks Record

Pictured with Santa – Callie Sly This year the Wasaga Beach Lions Club broke their record and served 575 pancake breakfasts with sausage in 3 hours. A great time was had by all of the families that attended. This has become a family tradition to several families. Once again, we would like to send out a big thanks to Peter's Foods from Aurora who donated all of the sausages. During this event, 127 portraits with Santa were also taken in 3 hours at a cost of only $3.00 each. A special thanks to the Superstore photo staff who helped make this possible. If you ordered photos, don't forget to pick them up by 20 December at customer service. The Wasaga Beach Lions Club would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas.

The Way Wasaga Was

Good Job Bouquet

Special Guest Writer, Doug Adams, Sports Director for Beach BOOSTER Radio Silver Stick in Wasaga Beach. In Wasaga Beach Minor Hockey the annual December Wasaga Beach Regional Silver Stick Hockey Tournament is underway. Here’s a tournament with some history! The International Silver Stick Hockey Association was founded by an Ottawa area man, Mr. Jack Kinsella, back in 1957 with the purpose of promoting Canada/U.S. relations and to foster Sportsmanship through hockey. The first tournament was held in Richmond, Ontario (just outside of Ottawa) in February 1958, between to local area Peewee/Bantam age teams and two teams from New York State. The tournament was named after the Ottawa Silver Seven Hockey team that won The Stanley Cup between 1903 and 1905. Sometimes the players were actually paid in silver nuggets and could have only seven skaters, one goalie, two defensemen, 3 forwards and a rover. The Silver Stick Trophy was a regulation size kiln dried hockey stick that was wrapped with copper steel tape and dipped in silver. Its cost was $500.00. After the first tournament, letters were sent to several towns bordering Canada and the U.S. to seek out tournament interest and by 1963 the event had outgrown the Richmond arena, and the new official home of the Silver Stick Tournament was McMorron Auditorium in Port Huron, Michigan. From a four team tournament in 1958, over the years it has grown into the largest North American Minor Hockey League Tournament! Regional Tournaments host over 65,000 players throughout the continent, both boys and girls! This year marks the 40th Anniversary of The Wasaga Beach Regional Silver Stick Hockey Tournament! The tournament dates back to 1973 when Clair Robertson was the Reeve of the Village of Wasaga Beach. The Wasaga Stars Arena was virtually brand new at the time with its official opening date May 16, 1973. Prior to the building of the new arena, Wasaga Beach Minor Hockey League games were played outside at the Oakview Rink! The Stars Arena for the most part remains unchanged and has been the host to hundreds of Silver Stick Tournament games over the past forty years. This year’s annual tournament got started Friday November 30th with our Mayor Cal Patterson doing the ceremonial Puck Drop and Silver Stick organizers Adrian and Jamie Procyszyn did a great job with the opening night’s festivities. Barry Benson had a special invite having coached five of our Beach Teams to the Silver Stick finals! Our Wasaga Beach novice and Atom Rep Teams were eliminated early this year, but our strong Boston Pizza Pee Wee Rep Team gets going December 15th at 9:00 am. The Bantam and Midget Rep matches are December 27th through to the 29th! Let’s support our town teams in this historical hockey event and stay tuned to Beach BOOSTER Radio Mondays and Tuesdays for game times and results. Be sure to keep up to date with all the local sports action with Doug’s Beach BOOSTER Sports Report on Beach BOOSTER Radio, every Opening cerimonies of Wasaga Stars Arena, May 1973.
