While you and the players are fighting over who gets what percentage of the fans hard earned $$ money we the fans are going to find other ways to spend our hard earned $$ money. When you finally come to a compromise and start the season we will have a lockout of our own. We pay you $10-$20 just to park near your arenas, we pay you $35-$200 to sit in your arenas. We pay $8-$10 for a beer in your arenas, we pay $8-$10 for a chincy slice of pizza or a stupid pretzel in your arenas. We wait in long lines for all of this and never argue when you raise the prices every year. We show our loyalty year in and year out and you continually show your lack of loyalty yet again!!! So how about we boycott your product for a while and see what you have to fight about then! Sincerely, One Angry Fan!!

Advice Column
Dear John: I hope you can help me here. The other day I set off for work leaving my husband in the house watching the TV as usual. I hadn't gone more than a mile down the road when my engine conked out and the car shuddered to a halt. I walked back home to get my husband's help. When I got home I couldn't believe my eyes. He was in the bedroom with a neighbour lady making mad passionate love to her. I am 32, my husband is 34 and we have been married for twelve years. When I confronted him, he tried to make out that he went into the back yard and heard a lady scream, had come to her rescue but found her unconscious. He'd carried the woman back to our house, laid her in bed, and began CPR. When she awoke she immediately began thanking him and kissing him and he was attempting to break free when I came back. But when I asked him why neither of them had any clothes on, he broke down and admitted that he'd been having an affair for the past six months. I told him to stop or I would leave him. He was let go from his job six months ago and he says he has been feeling increasingly depressed and worthless. I love him very much, but ever since I gave him the ultimatum he has become increasingly distant. I don't feel I can get through to him anymore. I’m afraid I’m a wreck and need advice urgently. Can you please help? Sincerely, Mrs. Sheila Usk, Wasaga Beach, ON Dear Sheila: A car stalling after being driven a short distance can be caused by a variety of faults with the engine. Start by checking that there is no debris in the fuel line. If it is clear, check the jubilee clips holding the vacuum pipes onto the inlet manifold. If none of these approaches solves the problem, it could be that the fuel pump itself is faulty, causing low delivery pressure to the injectors. I hope this helps. John.

Identity Theft Prevention Almost on a monthly basis I am asked to talk to a group or organization about fraud prevention, senior fraud prevention or identity theft prevention. So over my next couple of articles I plan to discuss the above, starting with identity theft. One factor that contributes to this crime is social media and the personal information people still upload. Identity theft occurs when someone accesses another individual's personal information such as their name, date of birth and SIN. I would like to offer the following tips to prevent you from becoming a victim of identity theft: Only give out your personal or financial information to individuals you know and trust and only give that person what is needed, no more. Never post personal information on social media sites; even if you feel you have all the privacy settings to protect your information, these settings and other get changed regularly by social media sites. If you are not aware of these changes you could be left vulnerable to identity theft. Shred all financial documents that you would have thrown out. This includes those “pre-approved credit card notices”. Shedders are inexpensive; if possible get a crosscut shedder. Consider changing all your financial documents and bills to paperless. Pick up your mail regularly and report any missing or damaged mail to both Canada Post and the Police. Always inspect your bills for any discrepancies and if you find one contact that billing agency immediately. You may find out that someone, not you, has been making purchases on your account. Do not respond to any unsolicited offers via e-mail, the Internet or the telephone. Do not carry your Social Insurance Number (SIN) card with you, keep it in a secure place and only have it with you when you are going to use it. Ensure your computer has up to date anti-virus and spyware and your firewall is on and working properly. If in doubt talk to your Internet Provider, they will assist you or have a chat with the many Computer Stores in the area. When disposing your old computers remove the hard drive and destroy it. (a big hammer works well) If you store personal or financial information on your wireless devices, when you get a new one erase all information on it then destroy it so it will not work. Never do any financial transactions when link to free wireless services at a business, store or restaurant. Always remember to protect your debit and credit cards and your pin numbers. Check your credit score or report from time to time. 41 years on air John Nichols 95.1 The Peak FM says goodbye
I had the great pleasure of interviewing John for Beach Corner prior to his retirement. Thousands of listeners across the Georgian Triangle woke up every day to hear John, if their alarm clock was set for 6:00 a.m. John's career in entertainment started with his rock 'n roll band The Randells, and often he would be listening to the radio for new songs released, and in particular, he listened to the Chum AM station. He decided to pursue a career in broadcasting when he heard an advertisement for an upstart radio announcer school called Career Academy. John applied and was accepted in the first class and the rest is history. John is a people person who has a passion for interviewing people. It's no wonder his Chats program was his favourite part of his job where he had the opportunity to meet and interview local residents in the community on events and happenings in and around town. When asked how it felt to be the voice to listeners waking up in the morning he said: “It's a little overwhelming at first to think of the amount of people listening; but then you start thinking more of that one particular person you're talking to, however, there is quite a responsibility but it's very gratifying serving the community.” Over the years, John met and interviewed a lot of people one most memorable was Charlie Farquharson aka Don Harron, well known as the guy from up country. Apparently, when he was in the studio John along with his mid-morning guy, both couldn't stop laughing. In the archives there's a photo of John and Charlie that John enjoys looking at it and reminiscing. If there was one celebrity he would of liked to add to his list of interviews it would of been Nelson Mandela. Indeed that would have been a great interview on Chats. If you're planning a career in broadcasting John says: “You must stay positive 24/7. For a small radio station such as the Peak, be prepared to be involved in the community, you cannot stay at arms length compared to a larger market. Listeners like to have a one on one with radio personalities such as when you are strolling down the aisles in a supermarket.” Computers have come a long way since John started in radio. It was a steep learning curve for him, but he soon found his way around social media. John never took computers in school and laughed at the thought of having a computer in every home but today everything is on the computer. It has been a great ride for John, this wouldn't have been achieved without the listeners and John thanked everyone who attended the restaurant in Collingwood for making it such a fun day. John is planning more fishing, more gardening and hopefully a few trips here and there. We wish John a very happy retirement and thank him for all his services over the years. Our second annual Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival (WBSFF) offers our businesses and residents an opportunity to show off our community while creating a cultural event that has the possibility of not only drawing visitors and new residents but add to the creative economy in our area. For starters, the WBSFF committee has managed to attract two recognized people in the Ontario film business as award presenters at our second annual WBSFF Film Viewing and Awards Gala scheduled for January 26, 2013. Shaun Goldsmith, a producer, cinematographer and screenwriter and photographer (still), from Burlington will be presenting the documentary category awards. When Shaun accepted Dianna Chycki’s invitation to come to Wasaga Beach to meet our film festival committee, Shaun quickly realized that he could shoot a film right here in Wasaga Beach given its unique history and beautiful natural settings. So don’t be surprised if you see a film crew in Wasaga Beach in the next few months filming at different sets. Beach BOOSTER will keep you up to date on the developments. Christian Potenza, a Canadian actor born in Ottawa, Ontario who also owns a production company with many projects, ranging from animation to feature films will be presenting the Action/Comedy awards. Christian tells us that a film producer he knows has already moved into our area to produce films because of the tax credits that can be gained by shooting film and videos outside of the Greater Toronto Area. In fact, The Ontario Film and Television Tax Credit (OFTTC) is a refundable tax credit. It is available to corporations for eligible Ontario labour expenses on Ontario film and television productions. A further credit of 10% of Ontario labour expenses is available for filming outside the Greater Toronto Area. This means as we attract more and more film industry people to our film festival there is more potential for recognizing that Wasaga Beach has a lot to offer film makers from available service workers to scenic panoramas to low cost filming set locations and higher tax incentives. We are also in the early stages of developing a workshop for wouldbe local film makers that feel they would like to take advantage of some skills and techniques they could use in developing films and videos for the Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival. So for all you Wasaga Beach businesses, you will be able to discover how easy and cost effective it will be to produce a video advertisement for your business and have it entered at the WBSFF and also loaded on the WBSFF You Tube® Channel to be viewed clear across the worldwide web. Switch Video, a leader in explainer videos has partnered with the Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival to lead the workshops. So our mantra of “The beach is just the beginning” could be taking on a whole new meaning. We could very well be on the cusp of attracting film makers to our area and grow our local economy. Our “Sundance North” vision for the WBSFF leans towards attracting national and international attention and growing our visitors and new resident populations. Our plans to acquire outdoor movie equipment and show our film festival and other films and local promotional videos to our summer visitors and residents are still moving ahead. We’ll keep you posted. The key ingredient to making all of this happen is your support. The WBSFF is always looking for volunteers and business sponsors to build this annual event into a show case for our beautiful community. Check out our website www.wasagafilmfestival.com for viewing and Awards Gala Night tickets, volunteering and sponsorship opportunities. Beach BOOSTER is certainly here to help the WBSFF on its way. See you at the Awards Gala on January 26, 2013! Send me your thoughts. Please email me at Gary@beachbooster.com
Lighthouse Tenders Did you ever wonder how lighthouse keepers living on a light station island got to the main land? In many cases around Georgian Bay, the means of transportation was a Watts boat known as a Lighthouse Tender. W. Watts and Sons of Collingwood were boat builders from 1842 to 1946. During their century of service to water transportation, the Watts built an amazing array of craft ranging from barges to canoes, yachts and other pleasure boats, skiffs and fish boats, scows and schooners. And Lighthouse Tenders. In a report dated 1910, the Minister of the Marine Department who served as the superintendent of lighthouses, reported that a variety of Watts boats had been purchased to serve the needs of lighthouse keepers. Many were delivered as early as the 1880s and ranged in length from 15 to 28 feet. Some were known as flatbottomed boats, others as dories or skiffs. But all were vital to the comfort and safety of those who kept a light! At Goderich, light keeper Robert Campbell had a 14-footer that was new in 1880. The Tender at Point Clark was a 22-foot sail boat with a ten foot beam, while Kincardine’s keeper manned a 17-foot boat delivered in 1875 that was very much in need of repair. Andrew Lockerbie had two Watts boats at the Collingwood (Nottawasaga) Lighthouse and there were also similar craft at light stations on Cove and Hope Islands. The last Lighthouse Tender built by Watts of Collingwood was the 36 foot Navaid, constructed in 1943. Used by Fred Watts as a personal craft, it was sold to the Department of Transport and put into service at Prescott, Ontario. The Navaid served as a light boat until its demise in March, 1968. For nearly a century, Watts Lighthouse Tenders acted as a lifeline for lighthouse keepers, their families and for those in trouble on the waters of Georgian Bay.

Welcome Sledders! Welcome everyone to Ontario’s winter playground. With the new snow on the ground and more in the forecast for this week we are out packing down the snow and putting the final touches on the trails for your enjoyment this season. We are working with the other clubs throughout the region to establish an early trail opening traversing the area as soon as possible. Today we wish to announce the Sno Fun Run which will be taken place on Family day weekend in February as part of the Wasaga Snowman Mania events this season. Please support the event to help eradicate breast cancer whether you ride or not, pledge sheets will raise funds and awareness of this serious disease. Check out our web site wasagasnowmobileclub.com for up dates and locations of all the activities planned for this holiday weekend. Snowmobile traffic through out our area can become quite congested at times so please be aware that all trails are two way traffic and to always keep to the right. Also be aware that grooming machines may be out working the trail at any time creating a smoother trail for all to enjoy. Until next time support the volunteers who make the trail possible and lend a hand if you can. Wasaga Club Executive

Lions Clubs International Float Rose Bowl Parade 2013
Lions Clubs International.... Our History 1917: The Beginning Chicago business leader Melvin Jones asked a simple and worldchanging question – what if people put their talents to work improving their communities? Almost 100 years later, Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club organization, with more than 1.3 million members in more than 45,000 clubs and countless stories of Lions acting on the same simple idea: let's improve our communities. 1920: Going International Just three years after our founding, Lions became international when we established the first club in Canada. Mexico followed in 1927. In the 1950s and 1960s international growth accelerated, with new clubs in Europe, Asia and Africa. 1925: Eradicating Blindness Helen Keller addressed the Lions Clubs International Convention in Cedar Point, Ohio, USA, and challenged Lions to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness." Since then, we have worked tirelessly to aid the blind and visually impaired. 1945: Uniting Nations The ideal of an international organization is exemplified by our enduring relationship with the United Nations. We were one of the first nongovernmental organizations invited to assist in the drafting of the United Nations Charter and have supported the work of the UN ever since. 1957: Organizing Youth Programs In the late 1950s, we created the Leo Program to provide the youth of the world with an opportunity for personal development through volunteering. There are approximately 144,000 Leos and 5,700 Leo clubs in more than 140 countries worldwide. 1968: Establishing Our Foundation Lions Clubs International Foundation assists Lions with global and large-scale local humanitarian projects. Through our Foundation, Lions meet the needs of their local and global communities. 1990: Launching Sight First Through Sight First, Lions are restoring sight and preventing blindness on a global scale. Launched in 1990, Lions have raised more than $346 million for this initiative. Sight First targets the major causes of blindness: cataract, trachoma, river blindness, childhood blindness, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. Today: Extending Our Reach Lions Clubs International extends our mission of service every day – in local communities, in all corners of the globe. The needs are great and our services broad, including sight, health, youth, elderly, the environment and disaster relief. Our international network has grown to include more than 200 countries and geographic areas.
2012-13 Lions Clubs International President Wayne A. Madden and Mrs. Madden ride on front of the Rose Bowl Parade Float. Mr. Madden, a Lion from Auburn, Indiana, USA, is an insurance agent and former educator. He was elected at the 95th Lions International Convention in Busan, Korea to serve as international president of the world's largest service club organization. It's Great to be a Lion...."We Serve". Help your community and gain valuable skills. Make an impact on people's lives - locally and internationally. Learn to be a Leader - and lead a respected organization. Network with Business People in your community and around the world. Energize your Life and have Fun. Come out to a meeting at the RecPlex soon. Listen to an interview with Lions President Madden being aired on beachBOOSTERradio.com.
