An invitation to celebrate a modern-day pioneer John Fisher, Park Superintendent Harold Culham byWasaga Beach and Craigleith Provincial Parks

Next Year, Max! Next Year!

W

e all know a good invitation when we receive one. Typically it will touch your heart and leave you wanting more. That is exactly what it was like the first time I met Harold Culham. It was 2007 and I had recently arrived at Wasaga Beach as the new park superintendent. I remember that day like it was yesterday. I was sitting at my desk at Park Office when one of my staff tapped on my door and told me that I had a guest waiting for me at the front counter - the notorious trail blazer of Wasaga Beach - Harold Culham. Of course I had no idea at the time how this first meeting would change my entire experience at Wasaga Beach ..... and it did! The first thing I saw was the hat and then those smiling eyes and the rest is history literally - this was a living local legend that I was meeting for the first time. Over the years I soon learned that when Harold called to suggest a meeting; (a) it wasn't really a suggestion, (b) it was always a good idea to accept as it might be the one and only opportunity to Sketch of Harold Culham courtesy of discuss something before it was done, and (c) meetings with Laura Jessop-Brockhurst Harold in a board room was limiting. When meeting with Harold it was always more productive to talk while hiking on a trail. This was a man of action and I can honestly say that if it wasn't for Harold there are areas of Wasaga Beach Provincial Park I may never have seen. I learned a great deal from him. He sure knew those trails and he had a very clear vision of where they needed to lead us all. That was Harold's invitation to me. Harold's trails led me into a deeper understanding of what it means to be a part of this community ...his community. Harold's' trails connected everyone in real and abstract ways. It didn't matter if you were rich or poor; an intellectual or worked with your hands; flamboyant or quiet - Harold's trails brought us all together, made us care about each other and helped us become better people. It touched my heart and left me wanting more. So now I extend Harold's invitation to you. On June 1st at 10 a.m. - International Trails Day - there will be a celebration of Harold Culham at Schoonertown Heritage Site located near the intersection of River Road West and Oxbow. The event will be led by the Town of Wasaga Beach and will involve both the unveiling of a monument as well as the dedication of the Harold Culham Memorial Bicycle Trail. Please join us in celebrating this modern day pioneer and icon within our community. I suspect you will also discover many new things about yourself and your community on Harold's trails as he continues to whisper and guide us along our way. www.ontarioparks.com www.wasagabeachpark.com

Victoria Day Weekend. May Long Weekend. May Two Four. Whatever we call it, to all in Wasaga Beach, it marks the un-official start of Summer and hopefully a very successful season! It is the day used to celebrate both the current monarch of Canada, and Queen Victoria, a tradition that can be traced back to settlers in then Upper Canada saluting the Queen in 1854. Who was Queen Victoria? Why was she important to Canada? Why is she still celebrated? Alexandrina Victoria was born in London, England on May 24, 1819. She took the throne in 1837 and ruled for almost 64 years. She is the great-great-grandmother of current British queen, Elizabeth II, and the great-great-great-grandmother of princes William and Harry, second and third in the line of succession for the British throne, respectively.Victoria oversaw a period in history when Britain became a great world power. Artistic endeavours, industrial developments and the creation of the British Empire were seen under Victoria's rule, a period now referred to as the Victorian Era. Victoria married her first cousin, Prince Albert, in 1840. Albert became not only her companion but a political adviser. The pair produced nine children, many of who would marry into other European royal families. Victoria and Albert are sometimes called the Grandmother and Grandfather of Europe. Albert died of typhoid fever in 1861 at the age of 42. Victoria was heart-broken and went into a deep period of mourning, retreating from public life and wearing black for the remainder of her life. She wore white only once, to her diamond jubilee, celebrating her 60 years on the throne. She died of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1901 at the age of 81. She had an intense dislike of black funerals and London was bedecked with purple and white for the sombre occasion. She was interred with her consort and husband Albert, in Windsor Castle.Victoria oversaw vast changes to England and the world during her time as queen. During her time as ruler, Victoria was the subject of seven assassination attempts and is known as Britain's first modern queen, turning over power to the government and intervening less in the political process. Under Victoria the British royal family became more symbolic than a political force. For Canadians she is the queen that started Canada on its road to independence. She gave permission to four British provinces in North America to form a confederation in 1867, creating the Dominion of Canada. This established a federal government in Canada with a House of Commons, a senate, and a justice system. The documents approved by Victoria remained in use until Canada ratified its own constitution in 1982. Victoria Day Weekend has great importance to all in Wasaga Beach, although few of us know the basis for the holiday or about the grand woman who granted us a nation!

Leaf Fan Max Hoit, 1 ½ Years Old

Bruins 5 Leafs 4 in OT Instead of their Toronto Maple Leafs advancing to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs with a Game 7 win over Boston — as seemed possible when the Leafs were up 4-1 in the third period — Leaf fans had to swallow another loss. But anger plus disappointment didn’t equal rage and destruction for the thousands who had gathered at Maple Leaf Square to watch on the giant screen . For many, it just meant heartbreak. Then there were the silver-lining types, like Pat Keenan and his friend Chris Anderson. Yes, the two travelling from Wasaga Beach were sad about the loss. But they were also grateful this year’s team beat the odds by making the playoffs and forcing a Game 7 against Boston. The performance of Toronto netminder James Reimer was particularly heartening for them. “You gotta give it to my boy Reimer,” said Anderson with a grin. “And they played a hell of a series,” added Keenan. “It’s devastating, but some people didn’t think the playoffs would happen,” he said. “It just shows we have a bright future.” Beneath the shadow of the Gardiner Expressway, a man offered his outstretched hand to every passerby, to make sure everyone he saw left with the message. “Next year, Max,” he said. “Next year.”

The Victoria Day Long Weekend marks the unofficial start of our summer in Wasaga Beach, as hundreds of cottagers return to The Beach looking forward to many, relaxing days at the cottage. As a kid I grew up enjoying every summer at The Beach and now realize how blessed I was to be able to enjoy this wonderful environment each and every summer! The family time shared with warm sand under foot and sunny summer skies above created memories that will stay with me forever. Recognizing how relaxing and rewarding cottage life can be, I have taken an interest in a great program known as “Cottage Dreams”. Cottage Dreams Cancer Recovery Initiative is a program that helps cancer survivors enjoy the benefits that a week at a summer cottage can offer them. It has been proven that during the recovery process, time spent with family, in the relaxing cottage atmosphere greatly helps the cancer survivor rejuvenate and allows them to celebrate recovery with those close to them. Cottage Dreams asks cottage owners to donate their cottages for a week and then they find a cancer survivor to enjoy that cottage with family. The well managed program is set up so valuable summer weekends are not effected as the families chosen use the cottage through the week. (Sunday through Friday) Much work is done to screen the right family for the donated cottage to assure there is no mis-use. The cottage owners can even request a tax receipt for the time donated! The time the cottage is enjoyed by the visiting family, is usually Sunday through to Friday. Although this organized program has been assisting cancer survivors recover in this unique way for over ten years, most of the donated cottages have been in the Muskoka and/or Haliburton areas. There is never a shortage of caring, helpful people in Wasaga Beach and with our large number of summer cottages in our town, I think Cottage Dreams could do great things for cancer survivors right here in The Beach! If you or your family and friends have a Wasaga Beach cottage available throughout the summer, Cottage Dreams could be a wonderful way to be rewarded by helping a survivor of cancer celebrate with some relaxing cottage time with family. For more information, please visit www.cottagedreams.ca or call 705-457-9100

Cyclists & Motorists Due to the warmer weather we are seeing more cyclists on our roadways. This means that again both cyclists and motorists must share our roads, some share better than others. Both users cyclists and motorists must understand that both are regulated by the rules of the road as outlined in the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario both have rights and responsibility. A good example of this and possibly one that both cyclists and motorists may be unaware of are found in sections 147(1) and 148(6) under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario. In section 147(1) vehicles travelling on a road at less than normal speed of traffic, (which would normally apply to cyclists depending on the road and the speed limit), where practicable be driven in the right-hand lane when available for traffic (multi-lane roads) or as close as practicable to the right hand curb or edge of the roadway. Section 148(6) persons on a bicycle being overtaken by a vehicle traveling at a greater speed (usually a motor vehicle) shall turn out to the right and allow the vehicle to pass and the vehicle (usually a motor vehicle) overtaking shall turn out to the left so far as may be necessary to avoid a collision. The two sections work together as a cyclist (usually moving slower than the posted speed) if you are being approached from behind by a motor vehicle (usually travelling at or above the posted speed) if and when it is safe to do so move to the right, if there are two or more cyclists all must move to the right, then when it is clear move back into your previous formation. As cyclist please remember you do not have all the safety equipment that a motor vehicle has so ride smart and obey all the rules of the road. As a motorist when you approach a cyclist or group of cyclists, slow down, do not honk your horn, assess the situation and when it is safe to do so signal and pass in safety. If you have to wait until it is safe and clear to pass, wait! As a motorist, please remember your motor vehicle is bigger and faster than the cyclist you are passing so do so with care. Another “rule of the road” that all cyclists under the age of 18 years must obey is to wear a properly fitted and approved bicycle helmet while riding on the roadway. A properly fitted approved bicycle helmet will drastically improve your chances of surviving a collision by protecting your head. Cyclist over the age of 18 years should also value the safety of their head and protect it by wearing a bicycle helmet. Parents are reminded that if your child is riding on the roadway without a bicycle helmet, you could be the one receiving the provincial offence notice and a fine for $80.00 Remember to check out my next “On Duty” article in Beach Booster!

Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing international super rock star SUGIZO for Beach Corner via Skype from Tokyo, Japan. SUGIZO is a musician, singer, songwriter and record producer. He plays a leading role as a lead guitarist and violinist of the rock band LUNA SEA, JUNO REACTOR and X-JAPAN spearheaded by Yoshiki. You may have heard of Yoshiki. He is widely known for composing the theme song for the “Golden Globe Awards.” SUGIZO enjoys experimenting with many musical genres – mostly rock, psychedelic and electronica. Noted for his political ideas and views, he is an anti-war, anti-nuclear and environmental activist. From a young age, he was brought up on classical music and started training on the violin at three-years-old. It was during his junior high school days he became more exposed to non-classical music types, such as Japanese Synthpop group “Yellow Magic Orchestra,” British new wave group “Japan,” David Bowie's glam rock and the London punk scene, all of which greatly influenced his style of music. SUGIZO launched his solo project on March 6 this year in Japan, titled “Vesica Pisces,” complementing his work with amazing bands such as Luna Sea, X-Japan and Juno Reactor. This is the last piece of the trilogy series extending from previous releases from December 2011, “Flower of Life” and “Tree of Life,” showing the world how amazing SUGIZO is as a solo artist. The latest release will be a cultivation of dance beat oriented tracks, with an amazing collaboration between prominent artists from overseas and Japan that joined SUGIZO on these remixes. His creative intelligence has no bounds and stretches beyond the ordinary music into realms of fantasy, mysticism and magic. Through his music, SUGIZO hopes his listeners will sense their inner power and realize how very special they are as human beings. When asked about the meaning of “Vesica Pisces” SUGIZO explained: “The Sacred Geometric symbol of 'Vesica Pisces' is the overlapped part of two circles. This is viewed as a sacred symbol it is the crossing where the spirit world and the physical world meet. The symbolism allows various interpretations that are all connected to the soul of humans.” Spiritual people and music are more important to SUGIZO than the genre of music. His mission it to “break borders or customs” by expanding his music throughout the universe. SUGIZO further clarifies: “Music has a big power and can bring wellness to this world.” SUGIZO was in Canada three years ago with X-Japan. He has fond memories of his tour. His singer is Russian and her family lives in Canada, making his presence all the more important. He is looking forward in the near future to returning to our country to promote his latest solo project “Vesica Pisces.” Since my interview, SUGIZO's JUNO REACTOR released a new album after five years a tour is imminent for 2013. JUNO REACTOR is notorious for such movie soundtracks as MATRIX, ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO etc. For more information contact: wakyo.jp/sugizo-vesica_pisces.php. What I have found in my experience is that getting away from my daily surroundings provides me the opportunity to think about the real important things in life. Travelling to new destinations usually prompts me to learn and reflect on the experiences I take in. For others, it may be just a stroll along the beach and thinking about possibilities. My wife Eva and I have just spent 10 days in Italy along the Amalfi coast. We were given the opportunity to savour good Italian food, experience some very heartfelt hospitality, make some very good friends and take in the breath taking scenery while imbibing the Italian culture. What a great experience! As we were walking along the shores of the Tyrrhenian Sea it became apparent to me how life can be so great. There is so much opportunity to enrich your life. It also made me appreciate what a good life we have right here in Wasaga Beach. I return with a new vigour appreciating what we have here at home. It also occurred to me that the rich experiences Eva and I took in over the last 10 days are not unique to Italy. We have the capability to create these types of experiences within our own environment in just how we manage relations amongst our family, friends, acquaintances, our visitors and our customers. Everyone knows we have just as beautiful natural surroundings as in any other part of the world. By applying purpose in our efforts to enrich our local culture, we can not only impact our personal quality of life and healthy living, we can impact our community and even our local economy. We can enrich our own culture leveraging the way we manage relationships and in the end, create positive experiences for everyone. We know by practice that one good act of creating a heartfelt experience builds upon another to create conditions that impact our local culture in a positive way, while in the process we enrich ourselves and our visitors. It's the heartfelt experiences that makes a good community great and provides the impetus for people to come back again and in some cases come back to not only revisit but to move here permanently and join and contribute to our community. So here's a challenge for all you “Wasaga Beachers” out there. This May long weekend, consider yourself a Wasaga Beach Ambassador and polish up some of your best down home friendship and hospitality ways to practice on your family, friends, visitors and customers and see what kind of great heartfelt experiences we can create for our visitors and ourselves. Beach BOOSTER is here to help and enrich this community. Please send me your thoughts and comments at Gary@beachBOOSTER.com on how we can create more heartfelt experiences for our residents and our visitors.

A Cannonball Goes Home During a visit to Georgian Bay some years ago of the tall ship Niagara, then Wasaga Beach Mayor Walter Bothwick handed over to her captain an 18- kilogram cannonball. The cannonball, which was found in a sand bank along the Nottawasaga River, had been fired by the original Niagara at the British schooner Nancy during the War of 1812 in Wasaga Beach. On August 14th, 1814, an American navy flotilla led by the brig Niagara, zeroed in on the British schooner Nancy. The Nancy lay hidden a few meters up from the mouth of the Nottawasaga River. A vital link to the besieged British fort at Mackinac, the Nancy was the last British vessel on the Upper Lakes. With the War of 1812 raging, the fate of the Nancy became a footnote in history. A sharp-eyed sailor in the Niagara’s rigging spotted the schooner’s masts behind a sand dune. The American force of three ships, 24 cannon, and 500 men easily destroyed the Nancy and the blockhouse built to protect her – in spite of a gallant defence by the schooner’s crew of 22 seamen, a couple of dozen Native warriors, and nine French Canadian voyageurs. A well-aimed shot blew up her powder magazine as the Nancy settled to the bottom of the Nottawasaga River. She wasn’t forgotten at first as First Nations people salvaged bits of iron from her hull. Four decades later, the Simcoe County countryside was cleared and ploughed. Year by year, the river’s spring floods piled silt around the Nancy wreck. Eventually, an island was formed giving Wasaga Beach its Nancy Island. The remains of the charred hull of the HMS Nancy were recovered in 1927, raised to the island and this historic site became a museum.

Just a few months ago the Stayner Lawn Bowling Club had their final meeting for the 2012 season and the greens were put to bed. Some of our members kept their bowling game sharp by bowling in a warm sunny climate while others just traveled a much shorter distance to Barrie, to bowl in the Dome. We all are waiting for the signal from our greens keepers, Wayne and Jim, so that we can get back on our familiar greens and enjoy some friendly games of bowls. We meet every Monday and Thursday evenings and hopefully we will be adding some afternoon bowling. We are offering open bowling for the month of June people are welcome to join us and to try out the game and even get a little exercise. We have avid bowlers who will help get you started and we will try and get you a personal Bowling Buddy for a few weeks. Just come out any Monday or Thursday evening around 6:30 and please wear flat soled shoes, we supply the bowls . If you have any questions please call our president Judy - 705-422-1870, Gerry - 705-428-0706, Wayne - 705-429-5117 - Helen - 705-424-9996 or Alinda - 705-428-6005. More information will follow closer to our official 2013 season opening. Almost all of our members are seniors, but it is not a prerequisite.

Natural Medicine: Separating Fact From Fiction

How our local towns were named

Insomnia: Proven Natural Solutions by James Meschino DC, MS, ND, ROHP

Stayner Pop. 4,200, Simcoe County, on now County Roads 26 & 91 and 39 km west of Barrie. The settlement was first know as Warrington, but when the Ontario, Simcoe and Huron Railway (later Northern Railway) came through in 1854, railway officials named the new station Nottawasaga after the township, residents used that name. A few years later the town was renamed Dingwall, but in 1864 the village and the post office took the name Stayner to honour Sutherland Stayner, a local property owner. In the 1880s a rumour circulated that Simcoe County, due to it’s large size, was planning to set up two County Towns. Stayner, in an ideal position to be chosen the northern town, prevailed upon the Ontario legislature, which in 1888 authorized incorporation of the Town of Stayner. Stayner then became the smallest town in Ontario, a distinction it maintained for some years. Dr. Meschino, who lives in Wasaga Beach is the author of The Meschino Optimal Living Program.
