T

here are some amazing avocado benefits for your health. If you would like to lose weight, improve your skin and lower your risk of many life-threatening diseases, here’s why it’s worth eating more of this extremely healthy fruit.

Top 5 Health Benefits of Avocado 1 Cardiovascular Health

2 Skin Benefits

Coronary heart disease is still the biggest killer in the UK and is essentially a disease of inflammation. Some experts believe society’s much increased use of processed vegetable oils, high in pro-inflammatory omega-6 fats are a significant factor in cardiovascular disease. They advise lowering our intake of polyunsaturated fats and increasing the amount of monounsaturated fatty acids in our diet.

The monounsaturated fats in avocado are also beneficial for improving your skin tone. They are vital for maintaining good moisture levels in the epidermal layer of your skin that make it look and feel soft and healthy.

Avocado is a great source of monounsaturated oleic acid that research has shown to both reduce dangerous low-density lipoprotein cholesterol at the same time as increasing the more beneficial highdensity lipoprotein cholesterol.

Avocados also contain a rich variety of heart nutrients including vitamin E for preventing cholesterol oxidization; folate for reducing dangerous homocystenine levels in the blood; potassium for regulating blood pressure; phytosterols for reducing cholesterol absorption; and dietary fibre to control blood sugar levels.

8 THE CLINIC

Equally delicious avocado oil is an even richer source of oleic acid, vitamin E and phytosterols and, along with healthy coconut oil, is the only heat stable cooking oil I would ever use.

Omega-9 fats can additionally help reduce skin redness and irritation and are involved in repairing damaged skin cells. Avocado benefits also include protecting your skin from wrinkles and other visible signs of aging with its antioxidant carotenoids; vitamin E which helps guard against photo-aging from sun exposure; and vitamin C which is involved in the creation of elastin and collagen for maintaining your skin’s elasticity and firmness.

3 Avocados and Weight Loss Many people would be surprised that a food high in fat and calories would be considered good for weight loss. However research has shown that monounsaturated fatty acids are more likely to be used as slow burning energy than stored as body fat. This slow burning energy and the feeling of satiety or satisfied

fullness that you get from eating an avocado is one of the reasons they are known for reducing hunger and appetite. It’s also why including more foods in your diet that are high in healthy fats and less with processed carbohydrates makes such a big difference when you want to lose weight. Snacking on nuts like almonds and walnuts instead of high carbohydrate foods is also highly beneficial for weight loss. This may go against old nutritional advice but look where that has gotten us. People eat low-fat versions of just about everything these days, yet we are more overweight than at any time in history. If you would like to know what really causes your body to store fat and what actually works to lose weight then see the fat burning furnace page. Counting calories, limiting fat intake and starving yourself has failed most people and will continue to do so. Only by eating more fat burning foods and generally going against most of what we’ve been taught about dieting in magazines is there a real chance at significant weight loss.

4 Diabetes As of 2012 there are currently nearly 3,000,000 people in the UK diagnosed with diabetes and there are believed to be a significant number of undiagnosed sufferers. If the rate of new cases continues, we will reach 5 million people by 2025 which will put a huge strain on the NHS and our ability to treat people with the disease. The most common symptoms of undiagnosed diabetes include a sudden and large increase in thirst and hunger and much more frequent urinating. A dry mouth, significant unexplained weight loss, vision problems and leg pain are also common symptoms. If you’re experiencing any of these issues then please see your doctor for a simple diabetes test. For those already living with diabetes, the oleic acid in avocado is especially recommended for its ability to lower ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol while raising the ‘good’ HDL cholesterol. Keeping cholesterol levels in check is vital for diabetics

5 Arthritis as they have a much higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Having more monounsaturated fats in a diabetic diet is also beneficial for reducing high triglyceride levels and may help improve insulin function and blood glucose levels.

Osteoarthritis is a painful disease of joint inflammation and soreness that affects millions of people in the UK. Many common foods like wheat, corn, milk and sugar are known to worsen symptoms, but anti-inflammatory avocado is one of the few foods consistently reported to reduce arthritic pain.

Other health benefits of avocado that can help with the condition include vitamin C for strengthening blood vessels and capillaries, improving immune function and reducing the high premedical exposure experienced by diabetics.

Avocados contain high levels of monounsaturated fats, phytosterols and antioxidants like vitamin E, vitamin C and a variety of carotenoids that may help with reducing the inflammation that leads to arthritis.

Vitamin E lowers cholesterol oxidization that can lead to heart attacks and strokes. It may also provide some protection from nerve damage in patients with peripheral neuropathy.

More Health Benefits of Avocado Eating avocados regularly has many health benefits including a healthier heart, better skin, helping you lose weight and treating or avoiding serious health problems like diabetes and arthritis.

The high levels of potassium in avocados are another important nutritional factor for diabetics due to its role in maintaining a healthy heart and regulating blood sugar.

In a more concentrated form, regular use of cold pressed avocado oil, especially as a replacement to the damaging vegetable oils

most people use in cooking, can be especially good for you. UK readers can find the fair trade and organic avocado oil I use here. There are many more beneficial nutrients in avocado, but I hope these five benefits are more than enough reason to look more closely at one of the healthiest foods the next time you’re out shopping. Once you do get your avocados, the next page has ways to ripen them both quickly and in a staggered way, so you can always have a ripe avocado ready to eat.

The Top 4 Avocado Skin Benefits

vocados are rich in fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants that can improve your skin from the inside. Here are four of the best avocado benefits for your skin and four excellent face mask recipes.

Antioxidant Carotenoids Avocados are a great source of antioxidant carotenoids like alpha carotene, beta carotene, beta cryptoxanthin, zeaxanthin and lutein. These free radical quenching compounds provide significant protection for your skin from the environmental damage that leads to fine lines, wrinkles and other visible signs of aging. High amounts of carotenoids in your diet have been shown in scientific studies to improve your skin’s density, thickness, tone and general appearance.

Vitamin C Avocado contains both vitamin C and vitamin E for your skin. We should ideally have sources of vitamin C in our diet every day as it is water soluble and cannot be stored in your body. As well as having strong antioxidant properties, vitamin C is needed for the creation of elastin and collagen, which bind your skin cells together and their maintain firmness. A good natural moisturizer with vitamin C can help improve things from the outside as well. But it’s even more important to get plenty of vitamin C from the foods you eat if you want to see a real and long term improvement in your skin.

Vitamin E Vitamin E is another skin antioxidant, but since it is fat soluble it is used by the body in a different way. Vitamin E assists in preventing free radical damage from oxidizing fats in your skin cells that lead to aging skin. Research studies have also

Monounsaturated Fatty Acids One of the main avocado skin benefits comes from their high oleic

acid content. This monounsaturated fatty acid maintains moisture in the epidermal layer of your skin, helping to make it soft and moisturized. Oleic acid is also involved in regenerating damaged skin cells and reducing redness and irritation. Omega 9 fatty acids are one of the building blocks of healthy skin

and avocados, and even more so avocado oil, are a great source of it. So along with all of the other health benefits of avocado, improving you skin is another good reason to have more of them. hola aloe vera By James Calvin

A

loe Vera is a species of Aloe, native to northern Africa. It is a stemless or very short-stemmed succulent plant growing to 80-100 cm tall, spreading by offsets and root sprouts. The leaves are lanceolate, thick and fleshy, green to grey-green, with a serrated margin. The flowers are produced on a spike up to 90 cm tall, each flower pendulous, with a yellow tubular corolla 2 to 3 cm long. Aloe Vera has long been a popular houseplant. Often called the ‘miracle plant’ or the ‘natural healer’, Aloe Vera is a plant of many surprises. It flourishes in warm and dry climates, and to many people it looks like a cactus with fleshy thorny leaves. In fact it is a member of the Lily family, staying moist where other plants wither and die by closing its pores to prevent moisture loss. There are around 400 species of Aloe, but it is the Aloe Barbadensis Miller (Aloe Vera or “true aloe”) plant which has been of most use to mankind because of the medicinal properties it displays.

The Aloe Vera Plant Although there are many Aloe’s the term Aloe Vera (“true Aloe”) refers to the Aloe Barbadensis Miller. Fully grown the plant stands 60 to 90 cm high, and a mature leaf is 7 to 10 cm across at the base, weighing 1.5 to 2 kg.

There is much confusion between Aloe Vera Gel and Aloe Vera Juice with the two often being thought synonymous. The term Gel refers to the inner leaf only, whereas Juice refers to “Aloe Latex” a bitter substance found just under the skin of the leaf.

The lower leaf of the plant is used for medicinal purpose. If the lower leaf is sliced open, the gel obtained can be applied on the affected area of the skin. Leaves and seeds are the two edible parts of Aloe Vera.

Leading authorities on Aloe Vera maintain that only Aloe Vera gel as fresh as preservation allows from the inner leaf has any remarkable properties.

The Aloe leaf structure is made up of four layers: Rind - the outer protective layer; Sap - a layer of bitter fluid which helps protect the plant from animals; Mucilage Gel - the inner part of the leaf that is filleted out to make Aloe Vera gel. Aloe Vera (inner gel) - contains the 8 essential Amino Acids that the human body needs but cannot manufacture. Aloe Vera has a bitter taste which can be unpleasant in the raw state. It is possible to get used to the taste of plain Aloe Vera gel, but if you can’t the addition of some fruit juice helps to make it more palatable.

Uses and Home Remedies using Aloe Vera Aloe gel has been used for topical treatment for minor wounds and burns and skin irritations for centuries. Aloe Vera used to be known as the “burn plant’. It is no longer necessary to keep an Aloe Vera plant handy for when you catch your hand on the oven door, these days Aloe Vera Gel comes in handy tubes.

called Aloe Propolis Creme is favoured by many for these conditions.

A two year trial is underway at the Neath, Morriston and Singleton hospitals in Swansea for use of Aloe Vera in treating Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). A clinical trial involving 44 patients suffering from Ulcerative Colitis has been completed at the Royal London Hospital and the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. The trial was completed in January 2004 and an improvement found in 38% of Patients given Aloe Vera gel as opposed to 8% given a placebo.

Made into a beverage and taken internally, it has been used to help many other conditions. Some of them are constipation, ulcers, diabetes, headaches, arthritis, and coughs. Taking aloe internally does have side effects, which can include pain, electrolyte imbalances, and diarrhoea.

One of the home remedies for asthma was to boil some Aloe Vera leaves in a pan of water and breathe in the vapour. Others have reported benefits of Aloe Vera in treating Eczema and Psoriasis, and a product

For pharmaceutical use as a laxative, the aloe juice is taken from the tubules just beneath the outer skin of the leaves. It’s a bitter yellow and dried to become aloe granules that are dark brown in colour.

It has been determined that it can also help with treating minor vaginal irritations.

Aloe Vera has been especially helpful of patients with severe and various skin diseases. It acts as a rejuvenating action. It acts as a moisturizer and hydrates the skin. After being absorbed into the skin, it stimulates the fibroblasts cells and causes them to regenerate themselves faster. It’s the cells that that produce the collagen and elastin so the skin will get smoother and look younger. Because Aloe Vera is natural, it works gently within the intestinal tract to help break down food residues that have become impacted and help clean out the bowel. When the bowel is cleaned out, it greatly reduces bloating, discomfort, and helps ease stress, which only leads to more attacks of irritable bowel syndrome.

Aloe Vera is best used when used fresh from the plant. It doesn’t store well but can be bought as a preserved product. Aloe Vera can be used topically as well as taken internally. It has been used for mouth sores, what we call stomach sores, or cold sores.

Aloe Vera used Throughout History Aloe Vera has been found described in writings in many different cultures and as far back as the Greek, Egyptians, and Roman eras. References have also been found in writings from the Indian and Chinese early cultures. Ancient records show that the benefits of Aloe Vera have been known for centuries, with its therapeutic advantages and healing properties surviving for over 4000 years. The earliest record of Aloe Vera is on a Sumerian tablet dating from 2100 BC. Its antiquity was first discovered in 1862 in an Egyptian papyrus dated 1550 BC. Egyptian Queens associated its use with their physical beauty. It was used to great effect by Greek and Roman physicians. Researchers have found that both the ancient Chinese and Indian used Aloe Vera. In the Philippines it is used with milk for kidney infections. Aloes are referred to in the Bible, and legend suggests that Alexander the Great conquered the island of Socotra in the Indian Ocean to secure supplies of Aloes to treat the battle wounds of his soldiers. Today in Japan Aloe Vera is commonly used as an ingredient in commercially available yogurt. There are also many companies which produce Aloe Vera beverages. People in Tamil Nadu, a state of India, often prepare a curry using Aloe Vera which is taken along with Indian bread (nan bread) or rice.

5.2 Diet Feast & Famine

I

t’s been a super-speedy and sensational hit, but there’s more to the 5:2 diet, or fasting diet, than a trendy fad. The hot new eating plan advises dieters to eat normally for five days a week and then drastically slash their calorie intake for two it is being followed by everyone from top celebrity chefs to Hollywood’s A-list.

Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday

the

The diet, also dubbed the 5:2 plan is the brainchild of medical journalist Michael Mosley, who learned about fasting while researching a TV documentary where he looked at calorie restriction as a way to extend your lifespan. On this plan, you can eat what you like for five days a week – on what’s called your feeding days and nothing is off-limits. Then, for the other two days of the week, you cut your calorific intake to just 600 calories if you’re a man and 500 calories if you’re a woman. That’s the only rule: you can eat your calories in one go, or graze so you spread them across the day just bear in mind that the fasting days shouldn’t be consecutive.

So what are the health benefits? As well as a route to weight loss, fasting for two days a week is also billed by the Fast Diet as a way to gain ‘long-term health and wellbeing’. ‘The real dividend is the potential long-term health gains – cutting your risk of a range of diseases, including diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Using this method of eating it is possible to eat what you like, most of the time, and get slimmer and healthier as you do it. By reducing your calorie intake for two days a week (down to 500 calories for women, 600 for men) you’ll lose weight and enjoy a wide range of health benefits. Studies have shown that fasting can help to reduce levels of insulin-like IGF-1, which leads to accelerated ageing, as well as reducing blood pressure and cholesterol levels. It is also said to improve the way your body handles insulin levels, as it makes it more sensitive - plus it can switch on your DNA repair mechanisms to help reduce your cholesterol

Who’s a fan? A diet isn’t a diet unless it has a celebrity fan base- Celebrity fans, such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Demi Moore, Sofia Vergara, Selina Gomez & Miranda Kerr use this plan and even British celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, and Phillip Schofield have taken to fasting to trim there bodies..

ADVERTORIAL

drink your way to younger, healthier and better-looking skin The next generation skincare solution - the collagen drink sold and recommended by beauty professionals, dermatologists and aesthetic surgeon

The skin is the largest organ in the human body and is exposed to environmental stresses on a day-day basis therefore as we age it is the first tell-tale indicator of our lifestyle and excesses. As we age, our skin begins to lose natural collagen and this results in wrinkles, fine lines and a dull complexion. There are lots of anti-aging topical applications that help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, however, as we know beauty comes from within and that is why Skinade offers something that little bit different.

Our skin is divided into two layers: The epidermis: an outer barrier layer The dermis: an inner structural layer Collagen is a simple protein made up of amino acids, the collagen matrix responsible for skin support, firmness, elasticity, hydration, and the constant production of new skin cells. The more collagen you have the more healthy, elastic and supple your skin is and the more youthful it appears. Alarmingly, we lose 1% of the collagen in our skin each year after the age of 20.

So what is Skinade?

Improving your skin

Benefits you will see

Skinade is a drink. It works from the inside out to rebuild and strengthen the collagen matrix below the skin’s surface, boost natural levels of hydration and reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

Skinade’s ingredients work synergistically to achieve the best possible anti-ageing results for your skin. Our patent-pending formula utilises high-grade collagen and essential micronutrients to help your body rebuild and strengthen the collagen matrix.

After using Skinade, consumers have reported the following results:

Developed by leading UK scientists and manufactured in the UK, the formulation contains high-grade collagen sourced from fresh-water fish, which are low in sodium. It is a precious ingredient and 700 mg are included in each bottle Skinade contains only the highest quality ingredients with no artificial flavours or colouring and fewer than 35 calories. With natural flavours of peach and mangosteen, it offers a pleasant tasting and convenient addition to your daily skincare regime. Drinking Skinade on a daily basis results in firmer, more even toned, hydrated, radiant, youthful and healthier looking skin. It reduces fine lines and wrinkles and repairs connective tissue, so you’ll also benefit from stronger, healthier and faster-growing hair and nails. Consumers who suffer from joint pain and certain skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis have also experienced an improvement in these disorders.

22 THE CLINIC

The special collagen in Skinade has a low molecular weight enabling rapid absorption and transportation to where it is needed. The collagen fibres formed, strengthen the collagen matrix in the dermis. Collagen improves skin elasticity by increasing the density of fibroblasts (the cells responsible for rebuilding connective tissue), and improves skin hydration and reduces fine lines and wrinkles. Drinking Skinade also stimulates the body’s own natural collagen production. When the body senses collagen in the blood stream, it stimulates the production of fibroblasts reinforcing the collagen matrix and playing a critical role in wound healing. This dual action makes Skinade a highly effective skincare solution Consumed on a daily basis, it effectively returns your body to a younger state of collagen production, resulting in a visibly more youthful appearance.

O After 4 to 6 days they begin to feel a difference in their skin: It is softer and more hydrated O After 10 to 14 days they begin to see a visible difference in their skin: It is more uniform, smoother, radiant and glowing O Between 2 to 4 weeks skin starts to appear firmer and fuller with a noticeable reduction in fine lines and wrinkles O After 4 to 6 weekly skin-renewal cycle, the improvements continue to build. Individual results will vary but, with continued use on a daily basis, your skin will continue to improve. The appearance of your skin will continue to improve for as long as you incorporate Skinade into your daily skincare regime. If you stop taking Skinade for a short period e.g. over a weekend, results will be maintained. However, if you stop completely, your skin will begin to slowly lose the benefits you have gained. Individual results may vary depending on genetics and lifestyle. Factors such as smoking, sunlight, diet, including

sugar and alcohol consumption, stress and lack of sleep all play an important part in your health and your skin’s appearance.

Benefits for your body 30% of your body is made up of connective tissue or collagen, which is not only found in your skin, but also in your joints, hair and nails. The collagen in Skinade is highly bioavailable enabling the body to repair and renew connective tissue. Consumers have reported the following benefits: O Healthier, stronger and fastergrowing hair and nails O An improvement in the appearance of cellulite O Sufferers of acne, psoriasis and eczema have also experienced improvements in these skin disorders O Consumers who suffer from joint pain have noticed a decrease in discomfort.

Why not take a pill? If you were to try to take Skinade’s ingredients in tablet form, you’d need to swallow around nine large tablets daily. Not only is this difficult, but the body also finds them tough to digest. The valuable nutrients would pass through your system unused instead of being absorbed by the body. The collagen and essential ingredients in Skinade are in liquid formulation and 80% to 90% are absorbed by the body, while tablets offer an absorption rate of only 30% to 40%. Skinade has been precisely formulated with the optimum ratio of liquid to active ingredients including key nutrients, MSM, L-lysine and vitamin C, which are essential for the healthy production of collagen. Skinade’s highly bioavailable liquid formula, ensures that the body is able to quickly absorb and make use of them. Drink your way to a younger, healthier and better looking skin with Skinade.

ou’ve seen them sprouting up all over. Smoothie stands in the mall, boutique shops and in the refrigeration section of your local supermarket. Selling the latest in health food fads, the delicious beverage nicknamed the Smoothie. Not the outdated “milkshake”, too fat and calorie laden to mention, but a newer updated version of thirst quenching palate satisfier. Maybe you have sampled a few smoothies, they’re just the thing for a hot afternoon break. With a smoothie, you can enjoy your factorise flavours and still feel virtuous about watching your calories and fat, right?

SMOOTHIES HEALTHY OR HYPE?

24 THE CLINIC www.essentialhealth.com

Well, yes and no. There are many varieties of smoothies that are a lot lower in calories than the old fashioned ice cream based milkshake. The smoothie is just a handful of fruit blended into a healthy concoction, so claim the advertisements. However, as you probably have learned by now, “things aren’t always what they seem” . There are many blends of fruit and fruit juices that are both low calorie and packed with vitamins. There are also those that contain as many calories as a whole meal and the fat allowance for the whole day. A delicious concoction called the Papaya Paradise, which tots up a whopping 552 calories. Just for comparison you could eat two Lean Cuisine roast turkey breast frozen dinners for the same calorie cost. It sounds like a delicious healthy blend, with papaya, peaches, bananas, orange sherbet, coconut and ice. Mix it all up and you have a hefty chunk out of your daily food allowance. How about a Raspberry Madness which contains 425 calories? A McDonalds hamburger, just for comparison has 360 calories. What was it I said earlier about updated healthier milkshakes? I found a smoothie called Hulk, which has a delicious blend of premium ice cream, chocolate and other goodies. Total calorie tag- 950 calories with 29 grams of fat. This is about half of your daily calorie allowance, the whole day’s fat, and doesn’t have redeeming nutritional value. Smoothies are not all sinfully costly, many are made with such healthy ingredients as nonfat milk or yogurt, berries or fruits, and shaved ice. These can satisfy your thirst for less than 100 calories and provide calcium and vitamins, depending on the fruit selected for the drink. To keep calories low, look for fresh, frozen or water packed canned fruit, juices and nonfat dairy products, beware when you see chocolate, heavy syrup, premium ice cream, peanut butter or whole milk on the ingredient list. Other danger flags are coconut, honey, coconut cream, fruit nectar, and protein powder. Calorie alarm! Calorie alarm! These are destined to go straight to your waistline, without passing your digestive tract. You can increase your vitamin and mineral value by choosing a smoothie with honeydew melon, or cantaloupe, any kind of berries, kiwis, bananas, low fat yogurt or milk and orange or other fruit juices. In addition, choose whole fruit whenever possible, to increase the fibre content and increase satisfaction by giving a feeling of fullness. Many smoothies also advertise special ingredients called “boosters” or “enhancers” touted as healthy additions to the basic smoothie. Some outlets may claim such health miracles as “cure a hangover” “ promote healing”, “burns fat”, “increases immunity”, “restores vitality” etc.

What are some of these “extra nutrition additives” and are they worth paying for? Aloe Vera juice: The famous burn remedy, appearing regularly as a

miracle cure for a wide range of ailments. There is no scientific proof that swallowing it cures or treats anything. Not only that, some of the constituents may be carcinogenic and it could cause severe cramping, diarrhoea and bleeding, in its form as a laxative.

Chromium picolinate: This one is touted as a fat burning, muscle

building substance, again with no scientific proof. It cannot increase lean muscle mass, only lifting weights can do that, and it has no curative effect on diabetes, as some claims assert.

Acidophilus: This is a good source of beneficial intestinal bacteria, valuable for assisting digestion, but is also the active ingredient in yogurt, so if your smoothie is yogurt based you can skip this additive. Turbinado:

Sounds impressive, but it’s nothing more than sugar. Bee pollen: This one’s been around for years making wild claims for health benefits. The only way you can benefit from bee pollen is if you are a honeybee. Not only does it not boost immunity, it could cause a severe allergic reaction, if you are allergic to bee stings.

Spirulina:

Highly touted to do everything from cure acne to impotence, “purify blood” and cures most diseases. It is of little proven benefit. It does have a few vitamins, but not as much, nor as valuable as most fruits. Chlorophyll, one of its main ingredients, is of benefit to plants, not humans. Ginkgo Bilob:. Claims are it improves blood flow and circulatory disorders, prevents or cures absentmindedness, memory loss, and dementia. Actual studies show it may have limited benefits for some Alzheimer’s patients, no proven benefit for others.

Ginseng: Another ingredient that’s been making miracle cure claims for ages. No evidence that it does anything. You may also see such enticing offerings as amino acids, echinacea, brewers’ yeast, wheat grass and who knows how many other worthless at best additives advertised. Don’t bother, you can spend a fortune on such expensive herbal, and nutritional supplements in any health food store with equal questionable benefit.

The bottom line is as usual, read the list of ingredients, and make a wise, informed choice. Enjoy these refreshing nutritious drinks by choosing ingredients you know are healthy and low in calories, when purchasing ask for skimmed or nonfat milk or yogurt based smoothies, and add any fruits you please, or fruit juices, as well as ice, for a wonderful texture, and turn up your nose at the high calorie additions, and the useless herbal or nutritional supplements!

DETOX 10 cleansing foods to get

your body back on track

I

t’s the New Year, which means it’s time for the flood gates to open with information bombarding us on the latest detox gadgets, gizmos, lotions, and potions. We all know someone (if it’s secretly not ourselves) who wants to lose weight, get leaner or just stay at a low and healthy body fat percentage. But did you know that, as different as those three goals are, they require the same strategies? We’re talking about detoxification, a process that can be very effective, regardless of a person’s current weight or future goal.

The Science: About our natural detoxifying system Did you know that every cell in the body has the ability to detoxify itself and break down environmental and metabolic waste. Enzymes in the cells either break down waste or render them less harmful for long enough to be kicked out of the body. Once such substances have been neutered, cells excrete the remains out into fluid that gets carried away by the lymphatic system. This is almost like a secondary circulatory system, which forms a vast network of organs and tissues throughout the body. It carries roughly three litres of fluid (recycled blood plasma, cellular waste, white blood cells, etc) around the body and is assimilated for removal from your body by the kidneys. Your kidneys have an incredibly sensitive filtration and waste removal system. In just five minutes, your entire blood supply passes through the filtration network in the kidneys, where soluble waste material is extracted and sent straight to the bladder for final ejection. So with this natural detox process taking place in our bodies, why do we feel the need to detox ourselves? Well, sometimes we tend to overindulge on things not necessarily good for us and this causes a back-up in our body’s natural process. Here we look at the following foods and which can help detoxify our bodies, help us feel more energised, improve your complexion, boost our moods and more importantly boost our health.

28 THE CLINIC

Lemons Lemons are a staple of many detox diets, and there is good reason for this. Firstly, lemons are packed with antioxidant vitamin C, which is great for the skin and for fighting disease-forming free-radicals. Furthermore, the citrus fruit has an alkaline effect on the body, meaning that it can help restore the body’s pH balance, benefitting the immune system. Try starting your day with hot water and a slice of lemon to help flush out toxins and cleanse your system.

Ginger If too much fatty food or alcohol has caused problems for your digestive system, it may be worthwhile adding some ginger to your diet. Ginger is not only great for reducing feelings of nausea, but it can help improve digestion, beat bloating and reduce gas. In addition to this, ginger is high in antioxidants and is good for boosting the immune system. To give your digestion a helping hand, try sipping on ginger tea or adding some freshly grated ginger to a fruit or vegetable juice.

Garlic Garlic has long been known for its heart benefits, however the pungent food is also good at detoxifying the body. Garlic is not only antiviral, antibacterial and antibiotic, but it contains a chemical called allicin which promotes the production of white blood cells and helps fight against toxins. Garlic is best eaten raw, so add some crushed garlic to a salad dressing to boost its flavour and your health at the same time.

Artichoke If you have recently been overindulging in fatty foods and alcohol, adding some steamed globe artichoke leaves to your meals is a great way to help get your body back on track. Globe artichokes are packed with antioxidants and fibre and can also help the body digest fatty foods. On top of this, globe artichoke is renowned for its ability to stimulate and improve the functions of the liver - the body’s main toxinfighting tool.

Beetroot For those needing a quick health-boosting shot of nutrients, you can’t do much better than beetroot. Packed with magnesium, iron, and vitamin C, the vegetable has recently been hailed as a superfood due to its many reported health benefits. Not only is beetroot great for skin, hair and cholesterol levels, but it can also help support liver detoxification, making it an ultimate detox food. To enjoy its benefits, try adding raw beetroot to salads or sipping on some beetroot juice.

Green Tea While it’s not technically a food, no detox plan would be complete without regular consumption of essential liquids. Fluids are essential for keeping our organs healthy and helping to flush toxins from the body, and drinking green tea is a great way of boosting your intake. Green tea is not only a good weight-loss drink, but it is extremely high in antioxidants. Research has also suggested that drinking green tea can protect the liver from diseases including fatty liver disease.

Cabbage Many celebs have resorted to the cabbage soup diet to help lose weight and get in shape quickly before a big event, however cabbage is not only good for weight loss - it is also an excellent detoxifying food. Like most cruciferous vegetables (including broccoli and sprouts), cabbage contains a chemical called sulforaphane, which helps the body fight against toxins. Cabbage also supplies the body with glutathione; an antioxidant that helps improve the detoxifying function of the liver.

Fresh Fruit Fresh fruits are high in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre= and are also low in calories, making them an important part of a detox diet. If you’re after brighter eyes and skin, shinier hair and improved digestion, try boosting your intake of fruit and eating from a wide variety of different kinds. The good news is fruit is easy to add to your diet, so try starting your day with a fresh fruit salad or smoothie and snacking on pieces of fruit throughout the day.

Brown Rice If you want to cleanse your system and boost your health, it is a good idea to cut down on processed foods. Instead, try supplementing your diet with healthier whole grains such as brown rice, which is rich in many key detoxifying nutrients including B vitamins, magnesium, manganese and phosphorous. Brown rice is also high in fibre, which is good for cleansing the colon, and rich in selenium, which can help to protect the liver as well as improving the complexion.

Watercress Like most green herbs and vegetables, watercress is an excellent healthbooster and detox food. Firstly, watercress leaves are packed with many vital detoxifying nutrients, including several B vitamins, zinc, potassium, vitamin E and vitamin C. Secondly, watercress has natural diuretic properties, which can help to flush toxins out the body. To reap the benefits of this nutritious food, try adding a handful of watercress to salads, soups and sandwiches.

o ward off common ailments, why not turn to your kitchen into your drugstore. Sitting ideally on many shelves in kitchens across the world are bottles of herbs. Unbeknown to many these natural condiments offer an impressive assortment of healing properties.

32 THE CLINIC

Next time you feel sick don’t instantly head for your drugstore to stock up on Paracetamol or Aspirin, because help may be a little closer to hand stacked away within your kitchen cupboard. In years gone by, our grandparents and their grandparents before them often turned to herbs and spices to ward off common ailments, and these time-tested remedies have proven safe and effective and above all they do so without exacting a heavy toll on our bodies.

T H YME

Thyme is hugely antibacterial; Thyme has been used since the earliest times as a medicinal herb. Before the days of refrigeration, a drop of thyme oil was placed in a gallon of milk to keep it from spoiling.

ROSEM A RY

One of its best uses of Thyme is as a cough and cold remedy, this is because Thyme has a pronounced effect on the respiratory system; in addition to fighting infections, it dries mucous membranes and relaxes spasms of the bronchial passages. The ability of thyme to relax bronchial spasms makes it effective for coughs, bronchitis, emphysema, and asthma. It’s drying effect makes it useful to reduce the abundant watering of the eyes and nose associated with hay fever and other allergies. And gargling with thyme tea can reduce swelling and pus formation in tonsillitis. Thyme also helps combat parasites, such as hookworms and tapeworms, within the digestive tract.

OREG A NO More popularly known for its aromatic and balsamic flavour Oregano, is more commonly used as flavouring in Mediterranean and Mexican foods. Used as a herbal medicine from as early a time as the Egyptian times, Oregano has been traditionally used as herbal remedy for skin burns, cuts and bruises. Because of the minty flavour of oregano, it is also used as herbal remedy for sore throat, asthma, colds, coughs and flu.

FEN N EL

Fennel also acts as an excellent digestive aid to relieve abdominal cramps, gas and bloating. The fresh stems of fennel can be eaten much like celery the seeds add a lovely anise flavour to fish and other dishes. Fennel seeds (as well as anise) contain creosol and alpha-pinene, chemicals that help to loosen congestion and make coughs more productive. Fennel also calms the dry, hacking cough of bronchitis. The Greek name for fennel was marathon derived from “maraino”, to grow thin, reflecting the widely held belief that fennel affected weight loss. Fennel’s ancient reputation as a weight loss aid still holds up today. Drinking a cup of fennel seed tea 15 minutes before eating a heavy meal seems to take the edge off your appetite. Fennel also tunes up digestion, helping to turn food into energy instead of fat. Women who are going through menopause or are experiencing menstrual problems may benefit from the estrogenic properties of fennel. It has a balancing effect on the female reproductive system and increases the flow of body energy.

Surely the most sweet and delicious of all the spices, cinnamon not only delights our taste buds but also acts as a wonderfully invigorating tonic to enliven body and mind and as an immune- enhancing aid to the body’s perennial fight against infection. By invigorating the nervous system, cinnamon can improve our resistance to the stresses of everyday life helping to fight against fatigue and at the same time relaxing and reducing tension and anxiety. Cinnamon is a wonder spice as it helps relieve and soothe a multitude of ailments. This everyday spice can nourish your skin, boost your memory, and keep the pounds away. Cinnamon has extremely high anti-oxidant activity, and the oil of cinnamon has strong anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. Cinnamon is also a great source of manganese, fibre, iron, and calcium. As a result, it has been used as an effective home remedy for: Reducing blood sugar levels and treating Type 2 Diabetes, Lowering cholesterol, Aiding digestion, Treating diarrhoea, Curing the common cold, Reducing arthritis pain, Boosting memory and cognitive function, Treating toothaches, Eliminating bad breath and Curing headaches and migraine pain.

From the Latin word rosmarinus (dew of the sea), rosemary has long been associated with its ability to aid memory. It is said that scholars in the past wore fresh rosemary sprigs in their hair to help recall their studies. Rosemary has a stimulating quality with a particular action of increasing cerebral circulation. It also contains the potent antioxidant carnosic acid, which has protective effects on brain cells and can possibly help those with Alzheimer’s. Rosemary tea is ideal for helping to stimulate the brain, or even just the smell of rosemary can help with concentration.

T UR M ER I C

Western science confirms that turmeric is a first rate anti-inflammatory herb. It contains at least two chemicals, curcumin and curcuminoids, that act to decrease inflammation much like NSAID COX-2 that inhibit the production of prostaglandins which are linked to arthritic inflammation. This anti-inflammatory effect may be why consumption of turmeric is also connected to a reduced occurrence of cancers, cataracts and Alzhemimers, memory and concentration., and has been shown to be an effective pain reliever in cases of rheumatoid arthritis. Turmeric powder mixed in warm water has been a used as a home remedy for cancer sores for some time. It has many medicinal properties such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activity that could explain why it is a useful dental and oral care treatment. Turmeric is such an exemplary herb offering a wide array of health benefits at a low cost. With this is mind Turmeric deserves a prominent place in almost anyone’s health routine as a daily supplemental and a healthy culinary spice.

he wonderful healing qualities of honey have been known since ancient times, honey was the most used medicine in ancient Egypt it was deemed so precious that it was used as a form of currency, the Roman legions treated their wounds with honey and athletes who participated in the ancient Olympic Games ate honey and dried figs to enhance their sports performance.

The list of honey’s beneficial functions is a long one. Honey increases calcium absorption; can increase haemoglobin count and treat or prevent anaemia caused by nutritional factors; can help arthritic joints, when combined with apple cider vinegar; fights colds and respiratory infections of all kinds; can help to boost gastrointestinal ulcer healing; works as a natural and gentle laxative; aids constipation, allergies and obesity; provides an array of vitamins and minerals; and supplies instant energy without the insulin surge caused by white sugar.

Here are some more ways to utilize the healing power of honey:

Prevent cancer and heart disease

Heal wounds and burns

Honey contains flavonoids, antioxidants which help reduce the risk of some cancers and heart disease.

External application of honey has been shown to be as effective as conventional treatment. It cools, removes pain and aids fast healing without scarring. It is speculated that the drying effect of the simple sugars and honey’s anti-bacterial nature combine to create these healing powers.

Reduce ulcers and other gastrointestinal disorder Recent research shows that honey treatment may help disorders such as ulcers and bacterial gastroenteritis. This may be related to the 3rd benefit…

Probiotic

Anti-bacterial, anti-fungal

Some varieties of honey possess large amounts of friendly bacteria. This includes up to 6 species of lactobacilli and 4 species of bifid bacteria. This may explain many of the “mysterious therapeutic properties of honey.”

All honey is antibacterial, because the bees add an enzyme that makes hydrogen peroxide.

Beautiful skin

Increase athletic performance. Ancient Olympic athletes would eat honey and dried figs to enhance their performance. This has now been verified with modern studies, showing that it is superior in maintaining glycogen levels and improving recovery time than other sweeteners.

Reduce cough and throat irritation Honey helps with coughs, particularly buckwheat honey.

Honey acts as an anti-aging agent, and moisturizer. Additionally, it contains anti-microbial properties and natural antioxidants which help to protect the skin from sun rays and facilitates the skin’s ability to rejuvenate and refresh exhausted looking skin, thus leaving it soft and silky. Honey also has the ability to absorb and retain moisture and this helps in keeping the skin well hydrated, fresh and supple. It is known that ancient women used honey and milk to keep the skin youthful, radiant, and smooth. Use these masks to give your skin that oomph.

Shiny conditioned hair

Balance the 5 elements Honey has been used in Ayurveda medicine in India for at least 4000 years and is considered to affect all three of the body’s primitive material imbalances positively. It is also said to be useful in improving eyesight, weight loss, curing impotence and premature ejaculation, urinary tract disorders, bronchial asthma, diarrhoea, and nausea. Honey is referred as “Yogavahi” since it has a quality of penetrating the deepest tissues of the body. When honey is used with other herbal preparations, it enhances the medicinal qualities of those preparations and also helps them to reach the deeper tissues.

Blood sugar regulation Even though honey contains simple sugars, it is NOT the same as white sugar or artificial sweeteners. Its exact combination of fructose and glucose actually helps the body regulate blood sugar levels. Some honeys have a low hypoglycaemic index, so they don’t jolt your blood sugar.

Honey is a humectant (which means that it helps to retain moisture) and an emollient (meaning that it softens and soothes), which “naturally” makes it a great conditioner and moisturizer. It is also rich in vitamins and minerals, so using it in your hair care routine can leave your tresses looking shinier, feeling softer, and in an overall more healthy condition. Recent studies have also shown that because of honey’s antibacterial and antioxidant properties, it can also prove beneficial in keeping your scalp healthy and promote hair growth!

Osteoporosis Research has shown that a teaspoon of honey per day aids calcium utilization and prevents osteoporosis – probably not a bad idea for anyone over 50. If you want to get the all the goodness from your honey, make sure it is pure and raw. Raw honey contains vitamins, minerals and enzymes not present in refined honey.

Types of Honey (most popular)

• Alfalfa

• Blueberry

• Buckwheat

• Clover

• Manuka

• Orange Blossom

• Wildflower There are at least 40 types – each one has distinctive taste and unique properties. As a rule darker honey tends to have higher antioxidant levels

CLINIC INVESTIGATES CEREAL BARS

HEALTHY SNACKS Cereal bars are often promoted as healthy snacks or an ideal breakfast, and many people choose them rather than, say, a chocolate bar, as they think they’re a healthier option. But Which?’s expert analysis of 30 bars from bestselling brands shows that a few deserve this image. All but one of the bars we looked at were high in sugar, and many were high in saturated fats. But poor labelling and confused clients means often this isn’t clear.

HIGH IN SUGAR

Of the 30 bars looked ta, 16 contained more than 30% sugar. While this came from fruit in some of the bars, all except Naked Apple Pie bar contained added sugars. And the manufacturers don’t make it easy for you to tell how much added sugar there is in each bar (see ‘Expert view’, opposite).

By law, manufacturers have to list the ingredients in order of quantity. By having several different kinds of sugar, the names appear further down the list – allowing healthier ingredients, such as oats, to be higher up, and giving the impression that the bar is healthier than it really is. The first ingredient in the Tracker Roasted Nut is glucose syrup (sugar). Per bar, the highest in sugar was the Nutri-Grain Elevenses with 18g – that’s nearly four teaspoons of sugar and 20% of your Guideline Daily Allowance (GDA) in one bar.

36 THE CLINIC

Which? Research reveals the cereal bars that are high in sugar, fat and calories, despite the manufactures’ attempts to convince you they’re healthy.

The The Cadbury Brunch Bar Raisin contained 15g of sugar sugar – around 15% of your GDA. Although the Dorset Dorset Cereals Blackcurrant, Cherry, Raspberry bar contained contained a similar amount of sugar, at 13g, this included included sugar from fruit, which offers additional nutritional benefits. But it’s worth remembering that sugar from fruit will still contribute the same amount of calories as added sugar.

CALORIE COUNTING

Some of the bars, such as Alpen Light Apple & Sultana and Weetabix Oaty Bars Strawberry Crusher, promote the fact that they contain less than 100 calories. But 11 of the bars we looked at contained the same, or more, calories than a couple of digestive biscuits (142 calories).

The calories in some products, such as Belvita Breakfast biscuits – marketed as a breakfast replacement – come mainly from added sugar and vegetable oils, which provide no nutritional benefits. Other bars, such as Eat Natural and 9Bar Original, get some of their calories from nuts and seeds – offering additional nutritional benefits.

HIDDEN FAT The Tracker Roasted Nut bar markets itself as containing ‘no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives’, but hydrogenated vegetable fat is listed in the ingredients Hydrogenated fats are

harmful in the same way saturated fats are – they raise cholesterol and can lead to heart disease. Ten of the 30 were high (red) in saturated fat; six of these were aimed at children.

CHILDREN’S BARS Seven of the bars we looked at were marketed to children. All were high (red) in sugar and two, Coco Pops Snack Bar and Monster Puffs Cereal and Milk Chocolate Bar, contained over 40% sugar – all added. Several cereal bars, including the Monster Puffs Cereal and Milk Chocolate Bar and Harvest Chewee Milk Choc Chip, promoted the fact that they had ‘no artificial colours’ and were ‘great for your lunchbox’. They didn’t promote the fact that they contain between one and two teaspoons of sugar per bar – one teaspoon is around 5g of sugar. The labelling on the children’s bars was sometimes confusing. The Kellogg’s children’s bars had adult GDA information, rather than children’s. We have raised this with Kellogg’s. Rice Krispies Squares contain pork gelatine, which makes these cereal bars unsuitable for vegetarians and people who don’t eat pork. But it was not clearly labelled on the packaging – we found it buried in the ingredients as part of the marshmallows.

THE RESEARCH We looked at bars on supermarket shelves and chose 30 bars, bakes and breakfast biscuits from the top-selling brands, including those aimed at children. We focused on fruit and nut varieties and those that appeared most healthy, avoiding ones that contained chocolate and yogurt if possible. Many of the bars weren’t as healthy as you might expect. The Tracker Roasted Nut wasn’t the highest in calories, but it was high in sugar, fat and saturated fat. The main ingredient is sugar (glucosesyrup) and it contains hydrogenated fat. The Alpen Light Apple and Sultana was the only bar to have three green traffic lights for fat, saturated fat and salt, and was the lowest for calories overall. For the full results table go to www.which.co.uk/cerealbarnutrition

Contains pork gelatine: The labelling on the Rice Krispies Squares wasn’t clear enough HIGH IN FAT: Tracker Roasted Nut Almost a third of this bar is fat. While some of this comes from peanuts and hazelnuts, the ingredients also contain vegetable fat and harmful hydrogenated fats.

HIGH IN SUGAR: Nutri-Grain Elevenses This 45g bar contains 18g of sugar, almost four teaspoons. Although it contains raisins and apple puree, the main source of sugar is glucose-fructose syrup.

WHiCH? SAYS Our research has highlighted the need for changes to make healthy choices easier for consumers, including: l Clear, consistent front-of-pack nutrition labelling with traffic light colour coding. l A responsible use of nutrition claims on food, so they are marketed accurately. l Tighter controls over marketing to children, so cartoon characters aren’t used to promote foods that are high in sugar.

HIGH IN CALORIES: 9Bar Original This bar contains 277 calories - more than a four-finger Kit Kat - so not ideal if you’re watching your weight. But many of the calories come from the nuts which are high in fat but healthy, unsaturated fats.

ecognised as one of the healthiest diets in the world, the Mediterranean diet is not a creation of some doctors or nutritionist or even some media fab it is a centuries old eating lifestyle and the olive tree and its fruit plays a major part in this.

Extra virgin – This oil is considered

The olive tree throughout history has played an important role it has appeared so frequently within ancient mythology that even today, despite our advancements in farming and production, we are still not certain of its exact origin, but since records began olive oil has been used as a product to promote skin care or as a cooking aid.

produced, and each brings a unique flavour and quality to the oil. While some olive oils are made by blending different olive varieties together mono-varietals, monocultivar olive oils are made using just one and it is the variety of olive, along with the maturity of the fruit that contributes to most to the flavour of the oil.

Virgin – This oil is produced from the

So what exactly is Olive Oil? And what sets one olive oil apart from another?

Olive oils described as ‘virgin’ are those that have been obtained from the original fruit without having been synthetically treated. Once the olives have been picked, pressed, and washed, no other process has taken place other than decantation, and centrifugation to extract the oil, and filtration. The best quality of olive oil available is described as ‘extra virgin’.

to be the premium grade of olive oil. It is made from the first pressing of olives. The oil is extracted by the traditional cold-pressing method, where no chemicals and only a small amount of heat are applied.

second pressing of olives or from the second-best grade of olives by coldpressing, without use of chemicals and use of little heat.

Olive oil – Also marketed as ‘pure’

olive oil. This type of oil is non-virgin, commercial-grade olive oil. It is ‘pure’ olive oil to the extent that it consists only of olive oil. This grade of olive oil consists of the inferior oil that is a result of subsequent pressings after the virgin oil has been extracted from lower-quality olives. This oil then undergoes a refining process involving heat, chemical solvents, high pressure and filtration treatments. This oil is then mixed with a small quantity of virgin olive oil to restore colour and flavour.

Olive oil is the pure oil obtained from the fruit of olive trees. There are many different kinds of olive varieties from which oil can be

............................................................

Light and extra light – These oils are produced from the last pressing of olives. They are more refined and of lower quality than the other grades. There is little of the natural olive flavour and colour in these oils.

The health benefits of Olive Oil are extensive: Heart Disease: Olive Oil helps lower levels of blood cholesterol leading to heart disease Cancer: Studies suggest that Olive Oil exerts a protective effect against certain malignant

tumours (breast, prostrate, digestive tract).

Osteoporosis: A high consumption of olive oil appears to improve bone mineralization and calcification ths preventing the onset of Osteoporosis . Blood Pressure: Recent studies have shown that regular consumption of olive oil can help decrease both systolic & diastolic blood pressure

Diabetes: It has been demonstrated that a diet rich in olive oil, low in saturated fats,

moderately rich in carbohydrates and soluble fibre from fruit and vegetables is the most effective approach for diabetics.

Rheumatoid Arthritis: Although medical science cannot explain this fully yet, recent

studies have shown that people with diets containing high levels of olive oil are less likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis.

Supplement Savvy...

G

oing to the drug store lately can feel a little like a Saturday morning trip to the candy shop, with dozens and dozens of colourful vitamin and mineral supplements to choose from with each claiming to improve your health in some shape of form or help you lose weight.

Vitamin and mineral supplements are extremely popular these days you can buy them just about anywhere the drug store, the supermarket, the internet, from the newspaper and through home-based distributors. But do you really need them? Will they improve your health? And more importantly are they safe?

Food for Thought Before you dash to the medicine cabinet and clear its shelf and stock up on every available supplement remember this truth: Food is still the Nº1 option for getting the nutrients your body need for healthy living. It is true that vitamins and minerals are essential in regulating various body activities. These nutrients do not function alone but work together with other nutrients. The best source of vitamins and minerals is food. Food provides the complete package. A balanced diet already contains the correct nutrients in just the right amounts. Individual foods also provide hundreds of other substances such as phytochemicals, zoochemicals, and antioxidants that help to prevent disease and boost the immune system. OK, so in today’s fast paced living eating correctly and healthily cannot always be accomplished, trying to balance work, children, and a social life (if your lucky to have one) often means we skip essential meals and just grab the easiest option therefore a balanced multivitamin supplement is highly recommended as these contain a combination of many vitamins and minerals and help to top up the levels your body may be lacking. Understanding which foods contain which vitamins is important for establishing a healthy diet.

Vitamin A

Vitamin D

Vitamin A, also known as retinol, is essential for eye function, strong immunity, healthy skin and normal fetal growth. According to “Advanced Nutrition: Macronutrients, Micronutrients and Metabolism,” excellent sources of vitamin A include beef, fish and chicken liver, fish oils derived from liver and fortified dairy products. Beta-carotene is a precursor to retinol and found in fleshy, orange vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes and yams, but also plentiful in spinach, kale, watercress, cantaloupe, mangoes and apricots.

Vitamin D consists of five different compounds that are essential for strong immunity, bone growth and maintenance. Sunlight is the best source of vitamin D-3, which is produced within the skin, while other forms of the vitamin must be consumed. According to the National Institutes of Health, fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, tuna and sardines are excellent sources of vitamin D. Other good sources include beef liver, shrimp, egg yolks and fortified cereals, dairy products and juices.

B-Vitamins The B-vitamin complex includes eight varieties that participate in cellular metabolism, energy production and immunity. The B-vitamin group, comprising thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, biotin, folic acid and cobalamin, are usually found together in the same foods and include animal flesh, organ meats, dairy products, eggs, fish, seafood, nuts, legumes and green leafy vegetables, such as spinach and kale.

Vitamin C Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is essential for strong immunity, collagen production and connective tissue repair. According to the Linus Pauling Institute, excellent sources of vitamin C are citrus fruits and include oranges, lemons and grapefruits, although rose hips, red and green peppers, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, kiwis, strawberries, black currants and guava also contain abundant amounts.

Vitamin E Vitamin E consists of eight different compounds that are considered antioxidants and essential for strong immunity, healthy skin and blood vessel maintenance. According to “Vitamins: Fundamental Aspects in Nutrition and Health,” rich food sources of vitamin E include vegetable oils such as those derived from cottonseed and safflower, almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, wheat germ, sweet potato, carrots and avocados.

Vitamin K Vitamin K plays an essential role in blood flow and clotting, which is especially important for the healing of injuries. Good food sources of vitamin K include cabbage, cauliflower, spinach, fortified cereals and soybean True, it can be frustrating and possibly frightening to not know if you’re getting enough of a certain nutrient so who needs a supplement? The decision to take a supplement should not be made haphazardly. It is best to seek advice from your physician or consult with a registered dietician. This health professional should assess

your dietary habits and intake, medical status, medication history, alcohol intake, and lifestyle habits. Some people who may need to take a multivitamin-mineral supplement include: • People with digestive diseases, illness or surgeries that can interfere with the absorption of certain vitamins and minerals and therefore increase needs • Pregnant and breastfeeding women (increased need for iron, folic acid, and calcium) • Vegetarians who avoid all animal foods and may have a deficit of vitamin D, vitamin B-12, calcium, zinc, and iron • People who smoke (because smoking increases the need for vitamin C) • People with certain major illnesses or injuries that can increase the need for healing nutrients • Women with heavy menstrual bleeding (may need more iron) • Menopausal women (might benefit from calcium) • Women who are trying to conceive (preconception warrants an increase in folic acid to decrease the risk of certain birth defects) • People taking certain medications that can increase or decrease the effectiveness of vitamins and minerals • People following weight loss programs that severely restrict food intake or calorie levels (less than 1000-1200 calories per day), which can result in poor nutrient intake • People with food allergies that require avoiding groups of foods and may result in nutritional deficiencies • People who abuse alcohol (increases nutrient needs)

Being Supplement Savvy Do not fall into the dangerous trap of thinking that, if a little is good, more is better. Excessive intake of vitamins and minerals can do no good. It is a waste of money. And in some cases, excessive intake can damage the body, have a toxic effect, interfere with medications, and may even result in death. To choose a safe, effective vitamin-mineral supplement, follow these tips: • Choose a balanced multivitamin-mineral supplement rather than one or two specific nutrients, unless it has been medically prescribed. • Choose a supplement that provides close to 100-150% of the Daily Value (DV) for recognized nutrients. • Look for the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) logo on the label. This ensures that the supplement meets the scientific approved standards. • Read the supplement label carefully. Follow serving size recommendations. • Avoid supplements that contain unrecognised nutrients and substances. A number of substances like PABA, inositol, bee pollen, lecithin, have never been shown to be essential to humans. They do nothing but boost the price. • Beware of gimmicks. Synthetic supplements that are made in a

laboratory are usually the same as so-called “natural” supplements. The body knows no difference, but your wallet does. “Natural” supplements cost more. • Do not give in to the temptation of added herbs, enzymes, or amino acids. This only adds to the cost. • Avoid supplements that claim to be therapeutic, high-potency, or for stress. This adds cost with no additional benefits. • Choose a supplement with an expiration date on the container. Vitamins can lose potency over time, especially in hot and humid climates. Follow storage advice. Supplements should be kept in a cool, dry place, with a tight fitting lid. • Keep supplements in a locked cabinet away from children. Don’t leave them on the counter or rely on child-resistant packaging. Be especially careful with any supplements that contain iron. Iron overdose is a leading cause of poisoning deaths among children. At the end of the day a poor diet plus supplements is still a poor diet. Food remains your best source of vitamins and minerals. So spend a little more time and money on delicious, tasty meals and snacks to meet your nutritional needs. And remember, a supplement is not a magic pill it is just a little boost in addition to your wise food choices. This little extra poses no danger and may be helpful at times if chosen wisely.

CLINIC SUPPLEMENT NEWS Sometimes our bodies need a little helping hand

Superior Joints Superior Joints is a research backed supplement that effectively relieves joint discomfort and helps to restore flexibility using nature’s best kept secret - Natural Eggshell Membrane. Natural Eggshell Membrane (NEM) - is a clinically proven source of chondroitin, hyaluronic acid, collagen and other glycosamino-glycans essential for healthy joints. NEM is clinically proven to reduce pain and stiffness and often within days! In a double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial published in Clinical Rheumatology, more than 50% of patients noticed an improvement within 10 days! Superior Joints also provides a unique blend of natural herbs and antioxidants with proven anti-inflammatory benefits including; Ginger - aside from enhancing the availability of the ingredients through its action on the production of digestive enzymes, ginger extracts are well known to inhibit the compounds that cause inflammation. Ginger contains important antioxidants that clear the joint tissues of impurities and allows fresh blood to flow into the aching areas comforting joint sores and improving flexibility and movement of muscles and bones. Turmeric - is known to possess powerful anti-inflammatory properties limiting the activity of the enzymes involved in inflammation (LOX and COX-2). By reducing the effects of these enzymes, turmeric may also reduce associated inflammation and alleviate pain. Turmeric is a potent antioxidant and is hence an excellent choice to help protect the joint tissues from the adverse effects of free radicals produced during the inflammatory process and hence promotes the faster recovery and repair without affecting the immune function. Tart Cherries - contain natural anti-inflammatory compounds. In laboratory tests carried out by Michigan State University, tart cherry compounds were found to be at least 10 times more active than aspirin without side effects. Other studies indicate that tart cherries inhibit the chemicals involved in inflammation and these same compounds also have potent antioxidant properties further protecting the joint tissues against free radical damage. Hyaluronic Acid - helps to stabilise the degradation of the cartilage matrix as well as aiding in the removal of waste matter including acidic compounds that cause pain and stiffness. Superior Joints is free from dairy, gluten, wheat, corn, soya, sugar, peanuts and shellfish and is suitable for vegetarians. www.victoriahealth.com

Magnolia Rhodiola CompleX Magnolia Rhodiola Complex helps to address low mood, mood swings, anxiety, loss of libido and other similar concerns incorporating stress-lowering herbs to stimulate calming factors to feel relaxed without drowsiness. Magnolia extracts have been shown to physically relax muscles and nerves as well as helping to reduce the levels of stress hormones in the body. Rhodiola Rosea increases tolerance to various stressors, i.e. mental, physical, and environmental, in part by beneficially modifying the stress response. This herb acts predominantly on the hypothalamus in a way that normalises the manner in which the body responds to stress triggers. Active compounds in this herb may enhance the transportation of mood elevating chemicals into the brain. Green Tea extracts have been shown to help promote deep muscle relaxation and improve sleep quality due to their ability to promote alpha wave production by the brain. Alpha waves relax the mind and increase mental concentration. At times of stress, the body goes through a series of changes in order to prepare you to run away or stay and fight, called your fight or flight response. Part of this response is the release of hormones such as cortisol and epinephrine (or adrenaline). If your stress response isn’t reversed, it can contribute to a condition known as chronic stress, and can also interfere with the hormones involved in your sexual response. The result can be low libido. To find out more about Magnolia Rhodiola Complex visit: www.iherb.com

Lingonberry Extracts

High Potency Astaxanthin Astaxanthin is a potent skin protecting antioxidant, much more powerful than Vitamin E and Vitamin C. It can help protect skin against free radical damage as well as UV light helping to delay the visible signs of premature ageing. Free radicals are unstable oxygen molecules, which can severely damage skin cells. They are created as a normal part of metabolism, but also by pollution, smoking, alcohol, stress, sunlight, medicines, heavy metals and poor diet. Astaxanthin is of particular benefit for people whose skin is going to be exposed to prolonged or strong sun on winter-skiing and summer holidays. • May delay visible signs of premature ageing

Lingonberry, also known as Mountain Cranberry, is a bright red, four-celled berry that grows on a low, creeping, evergreen shrub throughout parts of North America, Eurasia and Japan. Native Americans and indigenous peoples of Eurasia have historically used the leaves and fruit of Lingonberry as food and medicine. Among other things, Lingonberry fruit may be eaten raw, cooked into preserves or sauces, and used as flavouring. Many of the healthful benefits that have been proven of cranberries & blueberries may also apply to Lingonberries, which are similarly rich in beneficial antioxidants and vitamins. Futurebiotics® Lingonberry Extract is a 100% vegetarian supplement, provided in convenient, easy-to-swallow vegetarian capsules. With a recommended daily dose of only 1 capsule, each bottle provides a full 60-day supply. www.futurebiotics.com

• Helps improve tone and elasticity of skin • Considerably more powerful than vitamins C and E • Helps muscles to recover quickly after strenuous exercise. Due to the unique structure of Astaxanthin, it has the ability to pass the “blood-brain barrier,” which allows it to deliver antioxidant benefits directly to the brain and central nervous system. The Great Vaccine Debate

E

very parent sets out to do want’s best for their child. We all know about the importance of car seats & baby gates, but what about our child’s health? Once again the topic of routine childhood vaccines has gained a lot of media attention.

Most parents of this generation have never experienced what life was like before vaccines were used where mass disease and death where the norm and public health officials credit the mandating of mass vaccination to the almost extinct instances of most communicable disease.

THE CLINIC

51

So why are routine vaccinations such a hot parenting debate? Here we take a look at the Pro & Con arguments.

PRO Vaccines 1. Vaccination should be required for children. No individual should have the right to risk the health of the public solely for the purpose of satisfying their personal moral, philosophical, or religious views. 2. Immunization protects future generations. Vaccines have reduced and, in some cases, eliminated many diseases that killed or severely disabled people just a few generations ago. For example, smallpox vaccination eradicated that disease worldwide. Your children don’t have to get smallpox shots anymore because the disease no longer exists. By vaccinating children against rubella (German measles), the risk that pregnant women will pass this virus on to their foetus or new-born has been dramatically decreased, and birth defects associated with that virus are very rarely seen. If we continue vaccinating now, and vaccinating completely, parents in the future may be able to trust that some diseases of today will no longer be around to harm their children in the future. 3. Vaccines can eradicate disease and prevent serious illness and death. Mandatory vaccinations have eradicated diseases that once killed thousands of children, such as polio and smallpox. 4. According to the latest statistics, most childhood vaccines are 9099% effective in preventing disease. When children who have been vaccinated do contract a disease, despite being vaccinated against it, they usually have milder symptoms with less serious complications than an un-vaccinated child that gets the same disease.

5. Since some individuals that have been vaccinated may still get sick when exposed to infected individuals, 75% - 94% of the population (depending on the disease) must be vaccinated to achieve “herd immunity.” When herd immunity is achieved the number of immunized individuals is high enough to prevent the spread of disease through the population. 6. The risks of not being vaccinated far outweigh the small risks associated with vaccination. Preventable diseases like measles and mumps can cause permanent disability and death. In 1991 an outbreak of measles in an unvaccinated group of children in Philadelphia caused seven deaths. Children infected with the mumps can become permanently deaf. Although a very small number of deaths from the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine have been reported), the most common adverse reactions are minor soreness and or fever. 7. Even when diseases seem to no longer exist, outbreaks can still occur if children are not vaccinated. 8. The claim that vaccines cause autism is false. Many studies, including one by researchers at the Centres for Disease Control and Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health, reject the hypothesis that thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative in vaccines, causes autism. 9. Girls between the ages of 11 and 12 should be required to get the HPV (human papilloma virus) vaccine because it protects against four strains of HPV - two of which cause cervical cancer. Cervical cancer accounted for the deaths of over 273’000 women last year. The HPV vaccine can help stop these deaths and should be given to all girls before they become sexually active and have the potential to contract HPV. 10. Vaccines should be required because they produce significant economic benefits for society, every €1 / $1 / £1 spent on vaccination saves the public purse additional in medical costs that would result from having to treat unvaccinated diseased individuals.

CON Vaccines 1.

Governments should not have the right to intervene in the health decisions parents make for their children.

2.

Many parents hold religious beliefs against vaccination. Forcing such parents to vaccinate their children would their human rights which guarantee individuals the right to the free exercise of their religion.

3.

Vaccines are often unnecessary in many cases where the threat of death from disease is small. During the early nineteenth century, mortality for the childhood diseases whooping cough, measles, and scarlet fever fell drastically before immunization became available. This decreased mortality has been attributed to improved personal hygiene, water purification, effective sewage disposal, and better food hygiene and nutrition.

4.

Vaccines interfere with natural law and God’s plan for humanity. Disease is a natural occurrence, and humans should not interfere with its trajectory.

5.

Common childhood vaccinations may cause rare yet serious reactions including anaphylactic shock, paralysis, and sudden death. This risk is not worth taking, especially considering most diseases vaccinated against are not necessarily life threatening.

6.

Vaccines can trigger auto-immune disorders such as arthritis, multiple sclerosis, lupus, Guillain-BarrĂŠ Syndrome (GBS), and other disorders.

7.

Vaccines can cause brain inflammation (encephalopathy) which can lead to death or permanent brain damage and disorders such as autism, ADD/ADHD, and other developmental problems. In addition, the vaccine additive thimerosal (found in most pre-1999 vaccines) has been associated specifically with the development of autism and is still found in certain meningococcal, tetanus, and flu vaccines such as the H1N1 vaccine.

8.

Vaccines clog and disrupt the lymphatic system with large foreign protein molecules (the active ingredients contained within vaccines) which may lead to lymphatic cancers such as leukaemia and lymphoma.

9.

All vaccines cause immune system suppression, and can permanently damage the natural immune system. Unvaccinated children build and strengthen their immune systems through fighting off infection and developing natural immunity to diseases like measles and chickenpox. Artificial immunity, generated through vaccination, weakens the immune system and leaves children more vulnerable to all other diseases and infections.

10. Vaccines are promoted primarily to generate profits for manufacturers and financial donations for medical organizations that endorse vaccines. 11. Young girls should not receive mandatory vaccination for HPV (human papilloma virus). The vaccine was approved in 2006 and the long-term effects are unknown. Since approval, adverse side effects such as severe allergic reactions, Guillain-BarrĂŠ syndrome, spinal cord inflammation and pancreatitis have been reported. Although these adverse reactions may be rare, they are not worth the risk since the vaccine only protects against two of the 15 strains of HPV that may cause cancer of the cervix (20-40 years after an individual is infected).

Stress is contagious

A

s if being a mother wasn’t stressful enough. Scientists say that stress is contagious and can be passed from mother to child. A recent study has highlighted the impact a mothers’ stress can have on her children – showing how babies can pick up on their parents’ change of vocal tone, touch and smell during stressful situations.

their babies and the children’s heart rate measured. The women whose speeches had received negative feedback felt more stressed – and their babies picked up on this, with their heart rates speeding up within minutes of sitting on their mother’s lap. And the more pressured the woman felt, the greater the effect on the child, the journal Psychological Science reports.

Published in the journal, Psychological Science, researchers involved in the study recruited 69 mothers and their 12 to 14-month-old babies in order to examine the emotional synchrony between mother and child. The babies were taken to a playroom, while their mothers made a five-minute speech and then took part in a question and answer session. Some of the women received encouragement as they spoke, while others were faced with frowns and crossed arms. A third group made their speech to an empty room. The women were then reunited with

Sara Waters, lead researcher and postdoctoral scholar at the University of California, San Francisco said of the study:

Our earliest lessons about how to manage stress and strong negative emotions in our day-to-day lives occur in the parent-child relationship. Our research shows that infants ‘catch’ and embody the physiological residue of their mothers’ stressful experiences. Your infant may not be able to tell you that you seem stressed or ask you what is wrong, but our work shows that, as soon as she is in your arms, she is picking up on the bodily responses accompanying your emotional state and immediately begins to feel in her own body your own negative emotion.

Ultimately babies show extreme sensitivity to their parents’ emotions and moods, and the effect of prevailing or continual stress on young children has long been a concern of doctors. While parenthood is expected to bring daily stresses and worries that children will recognise in their parents, there may be occasions where children will be exposed to violence or trauma which will trigger unhealthy toxic levels of stress. This can have a dramatic impact on the health of the child.

54 THE CLINIC

Research has shown that childhood stress can disrupt early brain development – resulting in the formation of a smaller brain – and compromise the effective functioning of a child’s immune and nervous systems. Childhood stress has also been linked to health problems such as alcoholism, cancer, depression and other chronic diseases. Doctors therefore encourage parents to develop good coping tools in order to effectively manage their stress so they do not overwhelm their babies.

Europe’s law on e–cigarettes sets global benchmark Legislation governing the sale of electronic cigarettes was approved on the last day of February by the European Parliament, which voted in the draft rules by 500 to 63, with 60 abstentions. The move could set a precedent for legislation in other parts of the world where e-cigarettes are still unregulated, especially in the US where guidance from the Food and Drug Administration is expected soon. The European legislation allows shops to continue selling e-cigarettes as consumer products to Europe’s estimated 10 million e-cigarette smokers, or “vapers”, rather than having them be regulated as medicines as proposed in an earlier draft of the law. But the final draft, which now just needs to be approved by member states, does impose strict conditions on how e-cigarettes can be formulated, advertised and sold. From mid-2016, when the legislation comes into force, all advertising will be banned in the 28 European Union countries. E-cigarette packaging will have to include modest written health warnings, that “nicotine is addictive and could be harmful”, though there is scant evidence so far of ill effects from the products. The nicotine in e-cigarettes will also be restricted to 20 milligrams per millilitre of propylene glycol, a strength that scientists say is too weak for the 30 per cent of vapers who prefer higher concentrations. In a letter of complaint last month to the regulators, scientists said that this might deter heavy smokers from switching to e-cigarettes and pointed out that concentrations containing 50 milligrams would more closely match the typical intake from real cigarettes.

Many backers of e-cigarettes say they present the best opportunity yet for helping heavy smokers quit or cut down. “The directive in its current form will cause more harm to health than it prevents,” says Clive Bates, former head of the anti-smoking group ASH, and a leading campaigner for e-cigarettes. “It will place unjustified restrictions on an industry that could present an important alternative to the 28 per cent of European adults who smoke tobacco,” he says. Cancer diagnosis as simple as a pregnancy test A paper strip can sample urine for signs of tumours in the body. The cancer-detecting strip could one day make it simpler and more affordable to detect some cancers at an early stage. “Something I think that’s really shocking is the prevalence of cancer and cardiovascular disease in both the developed world and the developing world,” says Andrew Warren, a graduate student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who led the team of researchers that developed the test.

fragments of the marker. Those fragments eventually find their way into the urine. The test works like a pregnancy test – a person urinates on a paper strip coated with antibodies that can detect the marker fragments. If the fragments are present, the paper displays a line indicating the presence of cancer tissue in the body. Altogether, the process takes about an hour.

“Diagnostics are really a great way to help a lot of people as quickly as possible.” Unlike communicable infections like HIV and tuberculosis, signals from tumour proteins are difficult to detect. To get around that problem, the researchers created nano-scale biomarkers that can be injected into the bloodstream.

The research, published in PNAS, show that the strip was able to detect colon cancer, as well as blood clots – which can be a sign of cardiovascular problems – in a group of mice. Warren says they can develop more biomarkers to target other types of cancer. The team plans to launch a spin-out company to commercialise the test for use in humans.

Each marker is designed to interact with specific proteins that are produced by cancer cells. When the two meet, the proteins snip off tiny

Spit test could allow depression screening at schools A few globs of spit and a questionnaire could be all that’s needed to identify some teenagers who have a high risk of developing depression. That is the upshot of a study finding that teenage boys with elevated levels of the stress hormone cortisol, as well as depressive symptoms, can be 14 times more likely to become depressed later on. It’s the first biological flag to accurately predict the risk of an individual going on to develop depression, says Barbara Sahakian at the University of Cambridge, one of the study’s authors. The finding could lead to new pharmacological treatments for depression and could change the way schools deal with the condition. Teenagers could be screened for the biomarker and those at risk provided with targeted treatments. Her team measured morning levels of cortisol over three days in 660 teenagers aged between 13 and 18. Elevated levels of this hormone have previously been implicated in depression. The team also recorded any pre-clinical depressive symptoms the teens reported over a year, such as tearfulness or lack of motivation. The study was later repeated in a group of about 1200 teens. Teenage boys who reported high levels of depressive symptoms, and had high levels of cortisol, were more likely to have become clinically depressed over the next three years than any other combination. Those in this high risk group were 14 times more likely to go on to develop depression than the lowest-risk group, those who had neither high levels of cortisol nor depressive symptoms. Seventeen per cent of teens fell into this group but cortisol levels were not more useful than depression symptoms alone in pinpointing at-risk girls. Sahakian says screening pupils at school would be easy to do and beneficial, even if there were social stigma associated with identifying people who had a high risk of developing depression. “It’s better than leaving them alone in their bedrooms to get worse and worse,” she says. Screening could be carried out using saliva samples collected over a few days and students could fill out the questionnaire by themselves. Around the world, depression is one of the leading causes of disability. It takes hold early in life: half of all cases begin by age 14, threequarters by 24. For more information visit: www.pnas.org

Put a sock on it! A silicone sheath could one day be slipped over your organs to monitor health and treat disease. The prototype is the first bendy implant that can cover the entire surface of an organ. To make it, John Rogers from the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign and his colleagues embedded 68 tiny sensors into a sheet of silicone that they fitted around a 3D printed replica of a rabbit heart. They then transferred this to a rabbit heart kept beating outside the animal’s body (see video). Getting the pressure absolutely right was important, because pushing too hard on the heart can disrupt a heartbeat. Comparing information from sensors on the sock to that captured by various imaging methods showed that the sensors could accurately detect physical properties such as the temperature, electrical activity and pH in different regions of the organ. Because the sock completely surrounds the heart and can be designed to include electrodes that stimulate the heart, it could be used as an alternative to a pacemaker to help regulate heartbeat. Roger’s team is also looking at how to make both the sock and the electronics embedded in it dissolve when the implant is no longer needed. Although human trials are a long way off, the team plans to start animal trials in a few months’ time. A big challenge will be how to power the electronics embedded in the membrane. “You have a beautiful spider web mesh of devices but you have to get power in and out to activate them,” says Rogers. One option would be to have micro scale batteries embedded in the device, another would be to have power transmitted wirelessly from a source outside the body. Christopher Bettinger, a biomedical engineer at Carnegie Mellon University at Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, who is working on edible electronics, describes the work as an exciting demonstration of how you can use silicone to bridge the divide between the organic and the artificial. “The flexible electronic devices could be used to record vital data during surgical procedures,” he suggests. The team is already looking at how to adapt the system for other organs, including the brain. It should be relatively easy to thread the membrane around a heart during surgery, but the space around the brain is more cramped, making it harder to envelop. Surrounding it partially could still be useful. “Whether you exploit it in full 3D or not, being able to curve around a surface is very valuable,” says Rogers. “The idea could be applied to any organ.” For more information visit: www.nature.com

YOU & YOUR HEALTH

Health benefits of jogging & running

R

unning is very good for your health. It provides a great cardiovascular workout, strengthening and toning your muscles. Regular jogging gives better overall physical condition as well as some other health benefits, including mental benefits such as relaxation and reduction of anxiety. Most importantly for many, running is a good way to lose weight and generally get fitter.

Regular Running and Jogging Regular running and jogging is a good way to improve your health and fitness. You do not need to become a marathon runner to benefit greatly from running. Many people are concerned about long-term damage to joints such as knees, ankles, and hips, as a result of running. However, with good quality running shoes and a sensible approach, the risks are minimal, and the benefits of being fitter outweigh those possible risks. Jogging for just an hour a week can increase your life expectancy by around six years, reveal scientists. Even better news is that a gentle jog is better for you than any sort of extreme workout. Researchers found that jogging at a slow or average pace for one or two hours per week can increase the life expectancy of men by 6.2 years and women by 5.6 years, reducing the risk of death by 44 per cent.

Jogging makes the heart stronger. It increases the capacity of the blood circulation and of the respiratory system. This is essential for maintaining good fitness. It also speeds up the digestive system and can help to relieve digestive problems. Many people who live a sedentary lifestyle develop digestive problems that can be improved with a healthier diet and some regular exercise.

Does jogging help you to lose weight? Jogging makes you burn fat and thereby help’s to lose weight. In addition to increasing metabolism, jogging is an effective way to burn more calories, which helps you lose weight. If calories consumed in food are less than calories spent during exercise and other daily activities, you will lose weight. It is impossible not to! Many people have learned how to lose belly fat by starting a running program. Jogging helps to reduce stubborn belly fat. Stubborn fat can be very hard to shift, but a running program can really help to cut down on the last of your stubborn fat. The key is to think long-term and always work on your fitness. Change can take a long time to come but the end result it much

improved fitness and strength which makes maintaining a healthy weight so much easier. If you suffer from poor appetite, jogging will improve your appetite. Along with all other forms of exercise – the harder you work, the more you need to eat to repair your muscles and refuel them. When you start to run longer distances you will start to eat to fuel your body, and may even find that you need to eat more food everyday, than you did when you were overweight. As you develop your running you need to ensure that you are eating well, so read up on some nutrition advice for runners.

Jogging for Stronger Bones and Muscles Jogging will strengthen the muscles and bone density of your legs, hips and back. Long distance runners have very strong legs, even though they often look very thin and weak. Running does not produce bulky muscles, like weight training or even circuit training does, but it does increase leg strength. Also, the constant impact caused during running can increase bone density, so long as you follow a healthy diet.

Running Improves Sleep Jogging makes you sleep better. Also, if you exercise well, sleep comes much easier. One of the most important factors for improving fitness after exercise and diet is getting adequate sleep. Overtraining can occur if you do not rest properly.

Jogging and Colds and Flu

“It doesn’t matter how slow you go as long as you do not stop” Confucius

Research carried out by Professor Mike Gleeson from Loughborough University and presented to the Association for Science Education (ASE) Conference in January 2011 found that gentle aerobics, such as jogging, helps to ward off colds and flu by up to 33%. However, running long distances and training for a marathon will make you around 6 times more likely to pick up a virus. It is not just jogging that helps to boost the immune system, a daily brisk walk has the same effect. The research found that most types of intensive exercise increase the chances of catching a cold. This is not really a new finding as many athletes and runners have been well aware of this all their lives!

Barefoot Running: Fitness Fad and the Natural Way Running has always been one of the most affordable ways to get fit and lose weight, as all you need is a pair of running shoes and some loose clothing. Now some people are taking running one step further and making even bigger savings. They are running barefoot. Barefoot running is certainly not a new phenomenon. The human body is built for running, and we started running long before Nike made their first training shoe. Those that are passionate about running barefoot actually believe that barefoot running is better for the body, as it causes fewer injuries, which results in the feet becoming stronger, helping to cushion the body on impact. Also, as a slightly different running style is required, less stress is placed on the spine. When running barefoot you run on the balls of the feet rather than the heels. Your toes naturally spread out to help grip the ground and provide support. You will lean forward and bend your knees slightly to allow this, but it will come very naturally very quickly. Ken Saxton was so impressed with his progress after throwing out his old shoes and going barefoot that he now runs a barefoot running website –

www.runningbarefoot.org. He strongly believes that many running injuries are caused by running shoes. Even shoes that are tailored for an individual foot can cause injuries. It is estimated that over 60% of all runners are injured at any one time, and most of these injuries are caused by the “heel strike”. When the heel strikes the ground first, there is no natural cushioning and all the impact travels up the legs to the spine. This does not happen in a front footed running position. Some runners have managed to cure their shin-splints problems with barefoot running. Barefoot Ken now runs 10 marathons a year, and his joint problems seem to have cleared up since he threw out his running shoes. Barefoot running is now so popular that you can buy yes you guessed it, barefoot shoes! Famous Barefoot Runners: Zola Budd, the Olympic athlete from South African, used to run barefooted. Abebe Bikila from Ethiopia won the 1960 Olympic marathon barefoot.

Breast Screening

H

aving never heard of Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (“DITI”) until I visited the Bodyworks clinic near Estepona, I was intrigued about the whole process. I was offered the opportunity to experience this new technology by having my breasts screened using this new process. Like a huge number of busy working women I use the excuse that I never find the time for things which are really important, like smear tests and checking my boobs. So, when I was given this assignment I jumped at the chance to take advantage of breast screening.

Breast Screening

After filing in a medical questionnaire, I was taken to the screening room and explained the process giving me an over view of exactly what DITI is. DITI is a diagnostic screening procedure that images the breasts to help in the early detection of abnormalities. The process is pain free, 100% safe, no contact, no radiation, non invasive. There are no contra-indications for DITI making it safe for pregnant women and those with implants. DITI is a screening test for all age groups and is designed to establish a baseline (the patient’s normal thermal “fingerprint”) for ongoing comparative analysis to detect any physiological change that justifies additional testing. Such testing could be examination by a specialist, mammogram, ultrasound, MRI, blood work, hormone testing or a number of other interventions.

understand what is going on – it is frightening and very technical.

Bodyworks is a clinic but doesn’t feel scary, frightening or intimidating in any way. I feel quiet calm despite knowing that there are two lumps in my left breast – it is about the trust and having all the barriers between the time-pressed doctors and hospital atmosphere taken away

In whatever part of the body excess of heat or cold is felt, the disease is there to be discovered

I was instructed to take my jumper, bra and necklace off and slipped on a gown I was advised that I needed to allow my body temperature to be as close to the temperature of the room. I was asked to remove my gown, sit on a stool, place my hands on my head and face the camera. Turning so that my back was facing the camera, the sides of my breast where were imaged and then diagonally viewed. The whole process had taken a few minutes and a total of six shots had been taken. I was then invited to take a seat in front of the LCD screen as I looked at the screen, I could clearly see the outline of my body and the shape of my breasts. Now, I am not a scientist but even I could see very clearly two blobs on my left breast. The technician was quick to see the question forming on my lips. Yes, there are two indicators on your left breast and at this stage it is important not to panic. The technician then showed me a plastic model of a breast, cut through the centre to show the inside. There were two cysts shown and explained to me that they were harmless and very common. More than likely the two images showing on my results were cysts but as with everyone’s results my pictures would be analysed by a doctor who specialises in reading DITI results. The technician said that the images we had seen on my breasts were obviously worrying for me but that it was just as well we had done the screening. The doctor would analyse the results which would be available in 48 hours and take it from there. At this point I was handed over to Bob Mitchell who manages

Bodyworks. I was obviously shocked to fined I had two lumps in my breast especially as I do bother to check myself very carefully but Bob reassured me that it was very common and my results would be back quickly. Bob handed me a small plinth with a model or breast attached to it. “See if you can find lump in there-there are two “he said. I pressed and pocked but could not feel anything. He said I wasn’t doing correctly; it was very important to feel for any lump with the flat of my fingers, not try and roll the breast. After another attempt I managed to feel one lump but couldn’t find the other one. This is so worrying because obviously there are many women who check themselves for lumps but at this rate many will go undetected.

and replaced with a very calm thermal imaging technician and clear, instant images and very fast analysis of data. I can’t change the fact that the lumps are there but I feel safe in the knowledge that they have been found and are being dealt with.

As well as receiving the results in couple of days I will have to go back for another check in three months to see if there are any changes in the lumps found so as a monitor this device is priceless. It is also especially suitable for women who have implants as they are generally not able to have mammogram. A mammogram squashes the breast flat as possible and an implant could possibly burst. Also, mammograms are not generally suitable for use with women under fifty years of age as the breast tissue is usually too dense at this stage. I have read so many articles concerning breast-screening, mammograms etc over the years and have always failed to completely understand the science bit of the article. I think that it is possibly why so many of us switch off-because we just do not

Breast cancer: How exercise can help R

esearch shows that sports and exercise – both during and after treatment for breast cancer – can have a number of positive effects, such as improving fitness and quality of life. Many people find exercise to be an important part of getting healthy again after a health crisis. It can also help to cope better with a disease and relieve the side effects of treatment. Cancer treatments – whether involving surgery, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, or radiation – can be difficult to go through, both physically and emotionally. There may be side effects of varying severity depending on the type of therapy and how intensive it is. One common side effect is fatigue. Fatigue is debilitating physical and mental exhaustion. Most people who are in this kind of situation will feel down from time to time.

How can exercise help during and after treatment? Regular physical exercise can help women to keep fit or to get fitter again. Individually tailored exercise programs can reduce exhaustion and fatigue. This in turn leads to improved wellbeing and may make it easier to cope with fears, worries and feeling down. Research suggests that yoga or endurance sports like jogging, brisk walking or biking can help. Doing specific exercises with the help of a physiotherapist can also help improve mobility and muscle strength after surgery, for example if you cannot move your

arm properly afterwards. Exercise also seems to have a positive effect on problems associated with lymphedema. Several studies examined the long-term effects of physical exercise after a completed course of cancer treatment. The results show that people who exercised after treatment reported a higher quality of life than those who did not. Exercise may also make it easier to cope with the disease and help women feel better about their bodies. How much exercise is needed for it to be effective? A mix of fitness exercises and muscle exercises for 30-45 minutes at least three times a week can help with fatigue and improve wellbeing. In women who have had chemotherapy, sticking to an exercise program on three days a week is more effective than doing more intensive training. But more research is needed on the most effective type and intensity of exercise for different groups of women. It is generally important to feel comfortable exercising and to adjust your exercise program to suit your needs. A physiotherapist can help with that, especially when you are just starting out. During phases of physical weakness - for example, after surgery or during chemotherapy - some activities may no longer be possible or might not be suitable. Can exercise have side effects? Doing sports can always cause injuries, for example sprains. Starting arm exercises immediately after

surgery may interfere with wound healing. Too much exercise can be harmful during certain phases of the disease, for example if you have anaemia or an infection. In the studies that looked at specific exercise programs supervised by professionals, injuries and other side effects were not very common. Some women find it hard to do exercise or they find it depressing if they do not see any progress. Then it might be time to take a break from exercising. The enthusiasm might return after a while. It is important that what you are doing feels right. Exercise and lymphedema Lymphedema may be a complication of having breast cancer surgery. Lymphedema usually involves swelling in the arm because lymphatic fluid collects there. This can cause pain and tenderness. Women were previously advised to get plenty of rest after breast cancer surgery. It was thought that exercise increases the risk of developing lymphedema. Studies have now shown that this is not the case. Where can I find sports and exercise groups? Special sports activities are offered as part of cancer followup care. In Germany and other countries, participation in such activities can be prescribed by a doctor and then paid for by health insurance funds. Local cancer information and support centres and self-help organizations have information on what is offered in your area. Sports groups specialized for people with cancer also offer different types of sports and leisure activities for people who have completed treatment. Combining sports activities with social activities can offer both physical and emotional support.

Having cosmetic surgery, such as breast implants or rhinoplasty (nose job), is a big decision, so you should think carefully about why you want it

What you should be asking

?

Consultant psychologist Eileen Bradbury suggests the 10 questions to ask yourself before going under the knife Bradbury specialises in the psychology of appearance, and has worked for 20 years with people who are considering cosmetic surgery. “Cosmetic surgery is carried out for psychological and social reasons, not functional reasons,” she says. “It’s important to understand the motivation for wanting surgery, and whether this is something surgery can achieve.” Bradbury says it’s very important to be honest with yourself. “You’re the one who has to live with the outcome,” she says. “If you rush into the surgery without thinking properly about it, it might be the

Questions to ask yourself People might seek cosmetic surgery to solve life problems, or during disruptive times in their lives when they feel bad about themselves, for example, during divorce. Bradbury warns that these are not good reasons to have surgery. She advises people to ask themselves these questions: ■ How long have I thought about this surgery? ■ Did anything specific set off this desire? ■ What is my current life situation? ■ Why am I thinking about surgery now? ■ Are there other ways I can achieve the results I want? Also ask yourself: ■ Am I expecting the surgery to change my life as well as my appearance? ■ Am I considering cosmetic surgery for myself or to please someone else? ■ Am I expecting the surgery to improve my relationship?

wrong result, even if the surgery goes well.” If you feel that your appearance is disfigured, surgery isn’t your only option. The charity Changing Faces offers support and information on building self-esteem and confidence.

If everyone in your family has the same ears, for example, and you have ear reshaping surgery to change yours, you might look in the mirror and feel cut off from family ties. “Don’t have surgery on a whim,” says Bradbury. “If you’ve thought a lot about the surgery and the outcome beforehand, it will be easier to cope with.”

■ Am I expecting surgery to improve my social skills or job prospects? ■ Can surgery really give me the look I want?

If you’re feeling anxious about your relationships, social situations or work, don’t assume that surgery will make everything better. Instead, you could consider counselling. Talking with a relationship or careers counsellor could help you find ways to overcome these anxieties and build your confidence. “If you’re being treated for a psychiatric disorder, such as clinical anxiety or clinical depression, you should postpone the decision,” says Bradbury. “You’re in a vulnerable position at this stage, and won’t be making an informed decision.”

If, after asking all these questions, you decide to have surgery, remember that surgery is only one aspect of your wellbeing. “It’s like having a personal trainer,” says Bradbury, “You have to do most of the work yourself. Your wellbeing includes your lifestyle, nutrition, work and social life.”

DR Tomas Dario Zapata

As a member of the Spanish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (SECPRE) and the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery (SBCP) Dr. Zapata has a large international presence offering over 30 years of expertise. For Dr. Zapata, plastic surgery is a medical speciality that is very close to art. He believes that the essence of plastic surgery is based upon providing an individual, regardless of their religion, race or social class, harmony and peace within their own skin.

A

mong all the signs of ageing, face wrinkles have been the centre of attention for the plastic surgery. Nowadays, there are new techniques and options to improve surgery. To use it properly, it is necessary to understand it in all its facets. As time goes by, our skin and muscles suffer changes. Sometimes this happens all at once; in other cases, little by little. There is a gradual absorption of the adipose tissue in the face, which diminishes the denseness and the flexibility of the subcutaneous tissue. As a result, the soft tissue falls gradually and starts to look tired from early in the morning. In addition, the bones of the face start losing water progressively over time, becoming withdrawn, which makes the expression harsher and the skin and muscles fall even further. For this reason, infiltrations and peelings – surgical or chemical – cannot treat the results of ageing as a whole, only fine wrinkles.

UPLIFTING EXPERIENCE Infiltrations and peelings cannot treat the results of ageing as a whole - only fine wrinkles

Even though new techniques have emerged, surgery is still the best way to fight the ageing process, not only in terms of the results but also with regards to the possible complications, provided that the surgery is done by a highlytrained, experienced and qualified plastic surgeon.

Facelifts do not generally require the use of general anaesthesia and are usually performed with local anaesthesia and sedation. The surgery is not painful at any time, though one may feel odd sensations and stretching at times after the operation. Contrary to what most people think, the post-opertaion appearance is quite acceptable and easy to handle, with a normal appearance being recovered for everyday activities within ten to twelve days. The surgery involves repositioning the muscle bed and removing excess skin. This takes in the neck and the lower

third of the face, recuperating the outline of the face or jaw frame, the unmistakable sign of youth, thus giving a face with a relaxed, fresh and natural appearance. The scars are located around the ear. They are made with ever more refined techniques, with the result being completely unnoticeable.

Wanting to look good is a sign of good mental health. The aim of medicine is to give people physical and mental wellbeing. Plastic surgery provides solutions in spiritual terms more than in physical ones, since a good appearance reassures us and helps us face the daily life we experience today, for good or bad.

Transform Cosmetic Surgery Predicts the 8 most popular procedures for 2014

While the New Year will see many attempt to turn over a new leaf, it seems certain old habits die much harder than others - especially when it comes to beauty. According to Transform, cosmetic and non-surgical cosmetic procedures will still be very much en trend in the UK in 2014.

“There is a growing awareness of the different types of surgery available to people, coupled with the increasing desire to look and feel at your best,” says Shami Thomas from Transform. “Patients come to us as they want to feel good about their bodies and surgery can help them, and ultimately improve their self-confidence.

Whilst surgical procedures are still very popular, it’s the non-surgical procedures that are proving to be a key theme and this trend is set to continue into 2014 and beyond. Here are Transform’s predictions for the hottest cosmetic surgery trends for 2014:

Breast Surgery

Responsible for over 80,000 breast augmentations, Transform shines the spotlight firmly on society’s fascination with women’s twin peaks and suggests that the allure of boobs – whether to have them bigger, smaller or more pert - will continue to be one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the UK. Welcome news for a country that is united in its love for all things boobilicous.

Chin Implants Women will continue to aspire to capture Hollywood glamour and opt to have chin implants – a procedure revealed in 2013 to have been undertaken by movie starlet, Marilyn Monroe. The procedure adds definition and balances facial features, producing instant and significant changes in the profile of patients – serving to inject a new bout of confidence into those with a weak or receding chin. Enquiries for chin implants have doubled since 2010, with 60% of queries coming from women wishing to alter the silhouette of their faces and Transform expects the desire for a striking and defined chin to continue far into 2014.

Tummy Tucks For those who’ve been left with excess skin after losing weight or following having a baby, a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is fast becoming the solution for many unconfident Brits. For those left hanging with stretched skin, and weakened muscles, this is fast becoming one of the most popular procedures as it takes away loose skin and tightens up the muscles. And 2014 is sure to see a continued rise in people wanting to fold up their saggy skin and opt for a slimmer, more toned tummy.

Brachioplasty or ‘Bingo Wing’ Surgery Brachioplasty is the removal of excess, aging skin from the upper arms – often referred to as ‘bingo wings’ and gives tighter, more toned and youthful arms. An ever increasingly popular treatment among mature ladies who feel self-conscious about their ‘flappy’ upper arms or for those who have lost significant amounts of weight and want to tighten up the skin.

Vaginoplasty The quest for a ‘designer vagina’ has intensified, with labiaplasty and vaginoplasty amongst the UK’s fastest growing cosmetic surgery procedures. Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure to reduce the size of, or reshape, the labia minora – either for medical or aesthetic reasons – while vaginoplasty ‘tightens’ the vagina, a procedure that is particularly popular among women who have given birth. Transform reports that enquiries for the procedures have grown from 2,400 in 2010 to over 3,500 in 2013. Such results suggest that more and more women will feel empowered to undergo a vaginoplasty procedure in the coming year – and this is certainly set to be the surgery on everyone’s lips in 2014.

Non-surgical 2013 saw a whole host of celebrities under the spotlight as having undergone non-surgical treatments from Kim Kardashian to Coleen Rooney and Sharon Osbourne. With non-surgical procedures accounting for 75% of the cosmetic industry*, these treatments are the ones to watch.

The Non-Surgical Face-Lift Anti-ageing treatments such as dermal fillers, Botox and chemical facial peels are fast becoming a must on beauty-lovers’ lists.

And combined, they provide the ideal ‘face-lift’ that is seen to be taking over the surgical face-lift; they restore the contour of the face without the need for any surgery. A combination of wrinkle and line smoothing treatments, and dermal fillers result in a more refreshed, and line-free look that plumps up skin, minimises marionette lines and gives a rejuvenated look that is proving ideal for today’s youth-seekers. An increasing number of women want to stop the signs of ageing without surgery – and with such glowing results and minimal recovery time after these procedures, we’ll see the trend for non-surgical facelifts continue for years to come.

Lipotripsy The next generation in body treatment, Lipotripsy is a non-invasive, pain-fee treatment that works by stimulating the fat breakdown, collagen synthesis and lymphatic drainage. Lipotripsy treats the arms, saddlebags, thighs, hips, love handles and abdomen - having an ultimately slimming effect on the body. A clinicallyproven method to reduce cellulite, the increase in oxygen levels results in an improvement in skin elasticity and the skin’s smoothness is dramatically enhanced – a must for those seeking a beach-ready body.

Laser Hair Removal A treatment used for the removal of excess or unwanted hair, laser hair removal works by destroying the base of the hair follicle that is the source of new hair growth. Used on a variety of skin types, with minimum fuss and maintenance, it’s becoming the number one choice for those on the go wanting smooth, hair-free body zones.

Dr. Ana Téllez

(Aesthetic Specialist & MD)

Offering Experience & Medical Professionalism Dr. Ana Téllez offers a unique and exclusive insight into the new advances in beauty treatments available at Medicina Estética

Fractional Radiofrequency: Also known as skin resurfacing is a unique skin treatment utilizing bipolar radiofrequency energy to rejuvenate photo-damaged and wrinkled skin. It improves the texture, tone and tightening of the skin along with reducing pigmentation of epidermis. Simultaneously, volumetric deep dermal heating reaches the collagen fibres causing immediate and long term tightening effect. There is a significant perceived reduction in the depth of acne scars and stretch marks. This technique is used on the; face, neck, lips, deep creases and commissures. It can be used for the skin tension, acne scarring, or the marks left behind by chickenpox. It can also be used to help combat cellulite, treat body sagging & stretch marks, bags under the eyes, wrinkles, and reduce discolouration of the skin What’s unique about this is, it can be used on all skin types without risks of hyperpigmentation. This is a bipolar RF energy that uses your own body’s natural impedance to generate heat. RF is similar to optical energy in that it interacts with tissue to produce a thermal change. The device creates micro-thermal zones and leaves the healthy skin around for rapid healing. Not only does this treatment deliver RF energy deeper, but it offers a quick recovery. Mild to moderate treatments can be tailored to individual needs. Even with a single treatment one will start to see immediate visible improvement in texture, glow and photo-damage. This treatment can be done alone or can be combined with your own platelet rich plasma growth factors for enhanced results.

Plasma rich in growth factors: A treatment loved by many sports personalities, celebrities and even royalty! Plasma rich in growth treatment is one of the stars of anti-aging treatments for the facial rejuvenation and younger, healthier looking skin. A innovative technique to isolate and use growth factors (proteins) present in the patient’s own blood to enhance, accelerate and stimulate skin tissue regeneration. It produces an attenuation of wrinkles and increased thickness and smoothness of the skin giving you the appearance of younger, firmer skin.

Japanese V- Lift (Dermo-lifting) The Japanese V-Lift is a revolutionary anti-wrinkle facelift and skin tightening procedure that has taken the beauty world by storm! A unique technology where fine threads called polydioxanone (PDO) that were commonly used in surgery are inserted into targeted areas under the skin to stimulate skin tissue. As a result, the skin tissues create new tissue fibroblasts and collagen, which produces a tightening effect from inside out. When sagging skin is tightened, it creates a more sculpted ‘V-shape’ face as well as smooth, silky skin. The Japanese V-Lift can be applied to anywhere on the body, including the face, eye corners, cheeks, double chin, neck, forehead, laugh lines, forearm and abdomen and it can use to heighten the nose bridge, giving it a natural elevated look. Traditional lifting treatments are an involved procedure that are invasive as the surgeon pinpoints the incision to be made, inserts a thread in a certain direction and then fixes it by pulling the sagging skin. The area of application is limited due to treatment by thread and there is a recovery period. The Japanese V -Lift has none of the drawbacks associated with traditional lifting technology; there is no general or local anaesthesia required, and its procedure time is short, hence dubbed as the ‘lunch time’ treatment in Korea, Japan and other parts of Asia. The entire procedure takes about 30min – 1 hour (depending on treatment area), where an anaesthetic cream is applied on the treatment area prior to the procedure. The doctor then deftly inserts the threads under the skin. There is hardly any pain, bleeding or swelling and the patient can go back to work after the procedure. As the threads are dissolvable, they are slowly absorbed into the body safely. The results are visible from the first month, and will continue to improve for up to three months, with minimal side effects: swelling, redness, or a haematoma, which disappear within hours this treatment is ideal as a less evasive procedure.

ASER Lipo is a specialised and minimally invasive fat removal and body contouring procedure. In contrast to traditional liposuction, VASER Lipo affords patients the sculpting experience no amount of exercise of dieting can achieve by itself with ultimate precision and minimal downtime. The Private Clinic performs over 1,000 minimally invasive liposuction and body contouring procedures a year, and combined, our Doctors perform the highest number of procedures in the UK. Our expert VASER Doctors - Dr Dennis Wolf and Dr Edwin Anthony - are pioneers in their field and specialise in harmonising body proportions. They have helped make VASER Lipo a successful and popular minimally invasive body contouring procedure available today. Each patient is given our full attention and we will work hard to ensure you receive the kind of results you want for ultimate body contouring. Our Medical Team will tailor-make your procedure.

What is VASER Lipo? VASER (Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance) uses the most advanced ultrasound technology to breakdown fat cells, which are then removed from your body through a suction process. VASER Liposelection is a suitable procedure for both men and women. The ultrasound energy only targets fat cells, leaving surrounding tissues undamaged, and involves minimal downtime. Our experience tells us that VASER Lipo is the most effective minimally invasive method of removing unwanted fat from your body, creating a defined and sculpted area.

Where Can You Have VASER Lipo?

Thighs (inner and outer) - Stomach/Abdomen - Breasts - Buttocks - Flanks - Arms (Bingo Wings) Chin - Back - Chest - Neck - Knees - Calves - Ankles - male chest reduction (gynecomastia)

The Problem Some areas of the body are predisposed to store fat. If you have certain ‘problem’ areas or stubborn fat pockets that you just can’t shift no matter how much you exercise, VASER Lipo could be the answer for you.

The aftercare regime following both VASER Hi-Def and VASER Mid-Def is important and does require some commitment from you. Further information will be given about this during your pre-treatment consultation with the Doctor. Advantages of VASER Lipo:

The VASER Procedure

• VASER Lipo does not require general anaesthetic

VASER Lipo is a minimally invasive procedure, performed under local anaesthetic. A small probe is used to transmit the sound energy and liquefy fat cells prior to removal through a gentle suction process. It is a less invasive procedure than traditional Liposuction.

• Minimally invasive – no damage to other body tissues

The Results Improved overall shape and contours of your body. VASER Lipo results are very soft and natural-looking. For those who prefer a more athletic, sculpted look, VASER Hi-Def or VASER Mid-Def may be better options. Many patients see results straight away. However, the improved overall appearance of the treated areas will become prominent within a few months following the procedure.

Downtime The VASER Lipo procedure involves minimal downtime and you can get back to your daily routine almost immediately, depending on which area you have targeted. The small incisions made during the procedure will not require stitches. However, because there may be some bruising and swelling, we advise that you wait a couple of weeks before you hit the gym or do any rigorous physical activity.

• Minimal risk of bleeding, bruising and discomfort • Minimal downtime – VASER Lipo is a walk-in-walk-out procedure • Less scarring, less bruising • Stimulates collagen production, resulting in tighter skin for many patients, while conventional Liposuction may occasionally result in sagging skin

Our Medical Team The Private Clinic is a training centre for Advanced VASER Lipo. We perform close to 2000 VASER procedures every year. Our Doctors and medical teams are of the most experienced in the country. Click here to find out more about our team. Dr Dennis Wolf is the first clinician in the UK to perfect the use of VASER Lipo as a minimally invasive procedure for Breast Reduction. He has performed over 1800 VASER Lipo procedures for The Private Clinic. Dr Edwin Anthony specialises in defined and chiselled body contours, namely VASER high definition and VASER 4D. We work in partnership with America’s famous Advanced Body Sculpting Institute to bring the first ever Advanced VASER training courses to the UK.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED • Am I suitable?

• Are the results permanent?

Are you frustrated by stubborn, distinct areas of fat around your body that just won’t budge, no matter how much you exercise and/or diet?

Yes, as long as you maintain your weight. Once the fat has been removed it is gone for good, and if you follow a healthy diet and exercise plan it will not come back.

When you lose weight, is it usually most noticeable on your face and upper body, leaving behind more resistant areas, such as the hips, buttocks, thighs and abdomen? Fat distribution can be incredibly uneven, leaving some areas more out of proportion than others. Diet and exercise can only do so much for most people. VASER Lipo can help adults of all ages and most parts of the body affected by stubborn body fat. VASER Liposuction is a highly successful area specific fat reduction treatment. It improves the balance of distribution of fatty tissue around your body, for a more aesthetically pleasing profile. Although liposuction can often provide very substantial improvements, it is not a weight-loss technique, or a solution for obesity. It is also not an effective treatment for cellulite. Ideally, any treatment should be viewed as a compliment to regular exercise and good diet, and not the replacement of a healthy lifestyle.

• Does the procedure hurt? VASER Lipo is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you’ll feel no pain during the treatment. If you are feeling anxious, we can also offer sedation to help ease your nerves.

• How long does the procedure take? This will depend on the number and size of areas to be treated, but generally, the VASER Lipo procedure lasts between 1 and 2 hours.

• What happens if I gain weight after VASER Liposuction? Although it is highly recommended to try and maintain your weight after your treatment, it is possible to gain up to 3-4 kilos before you notice any obvious change in the treated area. With VASER Lipo, superficial fat and fat cells are removed, and as the body doesn’t readily make new fat cells past puberty, the results are more or less permanent. Any mild weight fluctuations are therefore not noticed as the extra fat is either immediately processed or evenly distributed around you body.

• Are there any side effects of VASER Liposuction? VASER exemplifies the safest and most effective tool used for liposuction and body contouring. However, the skills and expertise of your surgeon are what count in the success and results of the procedure, as well as your chances of any complications.

• How soon will I see the results? Many patients will see results straight away. However, the appearance of the treated areas will show the most improvement about 5-6 weeks post procedure. www.theprivateclinic.co.uk/treatments

CIRUMED CLINIC STANDS FOR ELITE PLASTIC SURGERY SPECIALIZED IN FAT TRANSFER

Cirumed Clinic Marbella, founded by Dr. Alexander Aslani, is the clinic of choice for patients who want to have their surgery in the luxurious surroundings of Marbella but still enjoy the standards and safety of a leading academic department of Plastic surgery in Spain’s elite hospital, Hospital Quirón. Quirón is Spain’s elite hospital with a prestigious history spanning over 60 years. The Quirón hospital group does only contract the leading national surgeons and European opinion leaders as heads of their specialist departments. With his appointment as head of the Department of Plastic Surgery of Hospital Quirón Malaga since the hospital’s opening in 2009, Dr. Aslani has become the only expatriate surgeon in Spain to be appointed head of a formal hospital department. Since 2013, he is also the head of the newly founded Plastic surgery department of Hospital Quirón Marbella. Boasting twenty years of surgical experience and over 12.000 operations, Dr. Aslani and his team offer the entire range of contemporary plastic surgery procedures, including reconstructive microsurgery. He and his team have particular clinical interest in large volume fat grafting procedures, especially fat transfer augmentation of breasts and buttocks. Having performed hundreds of these procedures in recent years, he welcomes patients travelling from all parts of Europe to undergo surgery with him in Spain.

PLUMP IT UP

C

ollagen injections give your skin a plumper, smoother appearance. Although collagen is the best known filler, there are many other substances doctors can use to plump up your skin, including fat from your own body and synthetic materials. Below you will find a detailed explanation of how collagen works, followed by a list of other injectable fillers your doctor may recommend.

Collagen 90 THE CLINIC

To understand collagen, you should first understand your skin. Skin consists of three layers: the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue (hypodermis). The upper-most layer, known as the epidermis, controls the loss of water from cells and tissue. Without this protective barrier, the body would quickly dehydrate. Just below the epidermis lies the second layer, the dermis. The dermis, although it contains blood vessels, nerves, and hair follicles, is primarily made up of a protein called “collagen.” This protein forms a network of fibres that provides a framework for the growth of cells and blood vessels. Because it is the primary component of the dermis, collagen acts as the support structure for the skin. The hypodermis is a layer of fat and connective tissue that contains larger blood vessels and nerves. It also hosts sweat glands, fat, and collagen cells. The hypodermis is responsible for conserving your body’s heat and protecting your vital inner organs.

Why Do Lines Appear on Skin? In young skin, the collagen framework is intact and the skin remains moisturized and elastic. It’s resilient to the many facial expressions we adopt as well as everyday environmental exposure. But, over time, the support structure weakens and the skin loses its elasticity. The skin begins to lose its tone as the collagen support wears down. Every time you smile, frown, or squint, you put stress on the collagen in your skin. The effect of these facial expressions is cumulative and facial lines begin to appear.

from cows that replace the collagen your skin loses over time. Zyderm and Zyplast collagen are placed just beneath the skin, in the dermis where the body readily accepts it as its own. CosmoDerm and CosmoPlast are bioengineered human collagen products that are used for similar indications as Zyderm and Zyplast but have the advantage of not requiring a skin test prior to the first treatment. Collagen should be injected into your skin only by a trained health care professional.

Other Injectable Fillers How Do Collagen Injections Work? Collagen injections replenish the skin’s natural collagen. The natural beauty of your skin is enhanced as the contour of the support structure is restored. Zyderm and Zyplast are collagen products gotten

Dermalogen is collagen extracted from deceased human donors. This is also a temporary fix, but your body should not reject it. Fascia injections use a specific type of connective tissue harvested either from your own body or from a deceased human donor. It can be implanted surgically or injected. The main drawback is that within a year of injection, your body will reabsorb the fascia and you’ll be back at square one. Fat from your own thighs or abdomen can be also be injected. There’s no risk of allergic reaction and you may achieve permanent results. This can also be implanted surgically.

Artecoll is a synthetic filler material. Because it’s synthetic, you are at higher risk of having an allergic reaction to it than if you got an injection of collagen or fat, but it lasts much longer than those options.

HylaForm is a material created from a natural body substance known as hyaluronic acid. There’s no risk of infection, but you will need repeated treatments to maintain the result as it’s only a temporary fix.

Autologen is an injection of your own collagen, extracted from another place on your body. There’s no risk of allergic reaction; however, the results are only temporary.

Restylane is a clear gel that also contains hyaluronic acid. It is only a temporary fix, as your body will absorb it within about six months of the injection.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED What Can I Expect From Collagen Injections or Other Fillers? Before getting a collagen injection, you should expect to receive a small injection of local anaesthesia to numb the area being treated. There is a possibility of slight bruising, and you may experience puffiness, redness, and tenderness around the treated site. It’s important to discuss with your doctor exactly what you can expect from each treatment. Together, you can prioritise which facial areas you wish to be treated and discuss how many treatments you may need and the estimated cost. It’s important to know that one treatment may not remove every line on your face. Depending on the substance injected, you may need continued treatments to maintain the smoothing effect.

How Many Collagen or Filler Injections Will I Need? That depends on which product you use. Just like natural collagen, collagen replacements begin to lose form and will eventually wear down. Treatment may require collagen injections two to four times a year to maintain the smoothing effects. Hylaform and Restylane are also eventually reabsorbed by the body requiring repeated treatment. Synthetic materials, such as Artecoll, last longer but carry a higher risk of allergic reaction. Fat, depending on how it is used, can sometimes achieve permanent results. How Do I Find out if Injectable Fillers Are Right for Me? You and your doctor will discuss your medical history and the areas you want treated with injectable fillers. Injections are not appropriate for certain lines and scars or when certain

medical conditions are present. It is very important to discuss and understand what filler injections can do for you. If you and your doctor decide injections are appropriate, your doctor may start with a skin test in your forearm to determine if you are sensitive to the substance being used. You must watch the area very carefully over a four-week period. Most men and women tested show no reaction to the skin test and can have injections. Why Aren’t Creams With Collagen Enough to Smooth Out Lines? Collagen creams work only on the skin surface. A moisturizer with or without collagen cannot penetrate the skin and is not designed to be absorbed. No moisturizer can undo the cumulative effect of collagen loss. Creams primarily slow the rate of water loss from the skin and help keep the skin supple.

Non-evasive procedures also rate very highly with some popular skincare treatments these include:

MEN’S HEALTH The Cosmetic surgery and procedures that men of today are opting for

N

ot many years ago, cosmetic surgery was considered enhancement almost exclusively sought out by women. While reconstructive surgery was not uncommon in necessary cases for both genders men’s interest was muted. However the 21st century has seen a shift in that sensibility and some of the top practitioners in the field have noted the trend. So move over the cosmopolitan women, the metrosexual man is here to stay - As more and more men are becoming conscious of the need to look good, they are opting for plastic surgery to enhance their looks for a better career or simply to look attractive, say experts. From facelifts to eyelid surgery to nose jobs, more men are opting for plastic surgery and cosmologists say that men today care more about their looks than even their wives or girlfriends do. According to research, the most common procedures which men undergo is hair transplant, with Liposuction or fat removal coming a close second followed by gynecomastic (male breast reduction). Many successful men in their 40s-50s have receding hairline and a pot-belly. It is this segment which mostly turns to cosmetic surgery. While the older men opt for hair transplant and liposuction, men in their late 20s go in for male breast removal. The profile of men choosing cosmetic surgery ranges from call centre employees to rich industrialists – it holds no limits. In addition to the top three procedures (as listed above) other cosmetic procedures followed by the modern man are: rhinoplasty (nose reshaping) and blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)

Botox

Botox is injected into the skin to help relax the muscles temporarily so that the skin appears smooth. Its results usually last for 3-4 months.

Laser hair reduction

Men too want to get rid of unwanted hair from their chest, back, etc and laser hair removal is a more permanent way of doing so. It takes multiple sittings and the results are quite promising.

Body contouring

These are non-surgical treatments and the idea is to subject the fat to trauma that helps disrupt the fat cells. This damaged fat is not removed by suction (as in traditional or laser liposuction) – it is left in the body and the body itself clears it away.

Vampire facelift

In this treatment, one’s own blood is drawn out, spinned in a centrifuge and injected back into the skin or used with a dermaroller on the face or scalp.

Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid in a very purified form. This is used to build collagen that is lost from the ageing skin thus restoring volume, lifting sagging skin and plumping out the folds.

Peels

A pretty popular treatment in men, peels help reduce pigmentation, improve the skin’s texture, remove tan and spots and add a natural glow to the skin.

Hydrafacial

Men who want quick results can opt for this treatment. It is a liquid skin polishing treatment with no downtime and it instantaneously hydrates the skin, helping you achieve smooth, well-cleansed, hydrated, moisturised skin in a matter of just 15 minutes.

Fractional laser Men who have oily skin are prone to having open pores, pitting, acne scars, etc. Fractional laser can come in handy for such damages

FAR, FAR away With air travel now more affordable than ever before the world really is opening up a host of exotic destinations and exciting adventures that were previously inaccessible to all but a few. With these new opportunities to explore comes a responsibility to consider our health and protect ourselves as much as possible. There are a host of diseases that do not occur within our usual environment that we may encounter when we travel to exotic destinations. Wherever possible we would suggest forward planning and adequate research into the area that you intend to visit. Some destinations are also politically unstable so you need to keep up to date with information on that country. Planning: Plan well in advance so that you have time to buy any necessary requirements such as mosquito nets, insect repellents, special clothing or medication. You may need a course of vaccines given over a period of time or the vaccine you require may need to be ordered especially so you should try to allow at least 6 weeks before departure. Some countries require a ‘Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate’ and you may not be allowed into the country without one. You can only get this vaccine at designated centres and yellow fever vaccines given at non-authorised centres are not valid as per WHO regulations. Make sure you have good travel insurance. We recommend ALC International Health Travel (www.alcatravel.eu) and you can obtain a quote or arrange your insurance via their website.

Research: Find out as much information about your destination(s) as you can, such as local laws and customs. The agent you booked your holiday with should be able to help with some information or search the internet. Two very good sites are the Foreign & Commonwealth Office www.fco.gov.uk/travel and Fit for Travel www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk.

Last minute bookings: Although not ideal, it is better to be vaccinated late than not at all. You may not be fully protected at the outset of your holiday but your immunity levels should increase as the days go by. Get what cover you can! College Clinic Travel & Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre:

We’ll try to make it easy for you. Phone us and make an appointment for a ‘travel consultation’. Any concerns you have can be discussed during the consultation and up to date information provided on all your travel destinations. Vaccinations can be given and we can also dispense antimalarial drugs, if required. Whenever possible we will try to satisfy all your travel needs in the one visit. All the information regarding your vaccines is kept on record and accessible if you should need it at a later date. You will be issued with a vaccine booklet detailing the vaccines you have had. We have a recall system to remind you when a booster for a vaccine is due whether it is 6 months or several years. Some people prefer to risk travelling without the necessary vaccines or antimalarial medication but this really is not to be recommended. It is not cost-effective because treatment for the preventable diseases can be expensive and hazardous even if you do not consider the cost to your health and holiday experience.

If the forecast is ‘rain’ most sensible people would take an umbrella! Please see our website: www.collegeclinic.gi Tel: 00350 77777 if you wish to make an appointment THE CLINIC

BAD RAGAZ, SWITZERLAND In the 14th century, visitors in search of a cure were lowered into the therapeutic thermal water in a wicker basket and left there, with food supplies, for a fortnight. Today the water is piped in, there are glorious new spa suites with their own sauna and steam room and an ultra-modern medical wing staffed by 30 doctors and therapists specialising in physical recovery, with seriously heavyweight credentials - a new MRI scanner, up-to-the-minute dentistry equipment, an operating theatre and the latest equipment for cosmetic surgery as well as nonsurgical laser cosmetic work. The Swiss Olympic ski team come here for rehab after injury. But it’s the individual stories that resonate, such as the 80-year-old woman who arrived in a wheelchair six months after a fall, and within two weeks was walking again, or the opera singer who felt her liver-spotted hands were detracting from her appearance and who was thrilled by their smooth, post-laser appearance. And then there’s that pure, delicious water, which fills the pools and the Kneipp stream in the huge wet area - walk in it, bathe in it, drink it. And do enjoy the treatments, too: from reflexology to oil applications via softly pounding poultices to facials by super brands such as Sisley and La Prairie. And the food? The healthy, Michelin-starred treats include lowcholesterol, Wagyu-like bison steak, exquisite sushi and tempting little not-too-wicked puddings. What a rocket charger. www.resortragaz.ch

GLENEAGLES, SCOTLAND The ESPA Life programme is as finely tuned to your needs and as cottonwool caring as the rest of Gleneagles is geared to immaculate service and hearty country pursuits. Slip through the spa’s polished doors into a parallel world of creamy calm, Asian sparkles and the capable hands of naturopath Dr Louise Westra. Precise and piercing, she gently but firmly unpicks your problems. You do need to come clean - depression, IBS, low confidence - so she can create your programme, mixing treatments with personal training and nutritional know-how. For fatigue and stress, you’ll be blissfully uncoiled with a deepreaching exfoliation and massage before Dr Louise zones in on your adrenals and, most likely, your sluggish digestive system. It’s not always comfortable. The acupressure massage roots out your under-active spleen while the colon hydrotherapy( can be buttock clenching. Both are unexpectedly ‘lightening’ (and enlightening), as most of the moodenhancing hormone, serotonin, is made in the gut. Osteopathic sessions re-align your posture, reflexology winkles out your blockages and the acupuncture is weirdly soporific. Therapists are focused, enthusiastic and uncannily empathetic. The Spa Menu is surprisingly tasty, with butternut squash and peanut salad, grilled cod and roast peppers, chocolate and beetroot cake; and Dr Louise turns a blind eye to sneaky treats. You’d have to be pretty strong willed not to indulge here; the afternoon tea is wildly over-the-top. Choose either the snazzily refurbished rooms in the old part or the cooler, contemporary Braid House. Don’t expect an instant makeover, but you’ll go home calmer, sunnier, clearer, lighter in step and, crucially, with the determination and tools to keep on improving and moving. www.gleneagles.com/spa

LA RESERVE, GENEVA As you gaze out from the hot-as-abath infinity pool, the steam rising over the mountains and the glasslike Lake Garda below stretching into oblivion, this remarkable spot feels more like an Asian paradise than northern Italy. It is the place to come if you are plagued by insomnia: first of all because it’s close, so you don’t have to battle with jet lag, and secondly because it has recently launched a five-day sleep programme. According to Dr Maurizio Corradin, there are 10 different forms of insomnia recognised by Chinese medicine and all can be treated. Despite the decidedly spiritual thread of your cosy chats, which include dream analysis, his advice is extremely sensible and it works. For someone who wakes at 4am each day, the treatment focuses on the regeneration of the lungs, with meridian stretching classes focusing on improving your energy flow, combined with strolls through stunning countryside. Daily moxibustion treatments, using little hot sticks of dried mugwort, work along your meridian lines to unblock energy - it’s like a heated form of acupuncture and is upliftingly relaxing. Eating lightly definitely aids better sleep and there is a light option for every meal but, remember, enjoying yourself is also key. There are fresh pastries and made-to-order omelettes for breakfast; lunch is more challenging, with plates of wafer-thin prosciutto, hand-rolled pasta and homemade ice creams inducing coma-like siestas that last well into the afternoon. And then there is the truly life-changing acupuncture with Corradin, who targets your deepest emotions with pinpoint accuracy, unravelling years of unresolved issues. His singsong words of encouragement will leave you feeling a more balanced, happier person - and with that comes sleep. Blissful, uninterrupted, heavy sleep. www.lefayresorts.com

KAMALAYA, THAILAND It’s almost irrelevant what treatment combo you do - before you even reach the spa the powerful spiritual energy which pulses through the air here (along with butterflies the size of birds) totally knocks you out. The rest of the world seems a million miles away, which is exactly what you need. This hypnotically beautiful jungly hillside resort is built around an ancient Monk’s Cave, once the font of Buddhism on Koh Samui. A man with a mass of dreadlocks plays pipes in the gardens, and the vibe is so pure and intense that it’s impossible not to switch off your BlackBerry and escape external pressures. The spa, a higgledypiggledy zone of treatment rooms overhanging the bay, provides every conceivable type of healing. Ayurveda is the lynchpin used in stress and burn-out programmes, as well as the new sleepenhancement programme. With uber-intuitive therapists slathering warm medicated oil over you, they stimulate your meridians, restore your chakras then polish your aura. Every treatment digs deep to maximise the flow of prana (your vital life force which digital overload drains away.) Chi Nei Tsang, a complex abdominal delving that refers to the gut as the second brain, balances the nervous system. This strange stomach massage excavates emotional trauma - prepare to weep and dream wildly. The near-vegan Asian food is superb (the Energy Salad is a delicious medley of wakame and goji berries); there’s all sorts of yoga; and you can finally take the time to learn to meditate. Rooms may be a little tired and the beach a little squished, but time out here will seriously soothe your soul and take you offgrid. You’ll re-emerge fit, sleek and connected - to yourself, rather than your gadgets. www.kamalaya.com

Jo Parker, Spa Director at Champneys says: “My top tip to start your new skincare regime is daily dry body brushing as it’s a great way to stimulate circulation, improve skin texture and banish cellulite. Use the Luxury Body Brush (£10.00) daily on dry skin before your morning shower. Begin at the ankles in upwards movements towards the heart - the lymphatic fluid flows through the body towards the heart, so it’s important that you brush in the same direction and always use clockwise circular brushing movements before finishing with a shower.

Over 400 highly trained therapists give face and body treatments at Champneys Spa Resorts and Day Spas and they try, test and approve every product to ensure it’s perfect to use at our spas and at home. The professional spa formula for the wide range of Champneys face and body skincare products means that you can create your own treatments at home and get great results. Jo Parker continue: “For a deep and thorough cleanse, massage the Spa Skin Gentle Facial Polish (£7.00) into damp skin. A renewing blend of Bilberry, Citrus and Natural Sugars combined with fine Jojoba Beads will leave skin smooth, soft and glowing - and the formula is gentle enough to use daily.

Follow this with the Luxury Body Polisher (£3.00) to thoroughly cleanse and massage the body using the Mineral Detox Shower Gel (£6.00). Enriched with energising Seaweed Extract, it helps to detoxify your skin through the removal of surface impurities. Move around the palm of your hand in vigorous circles to create luxuriously creamy foam leaving the skin cleansed and stimulated.

Enhance your at-home spa experience using the Spa Accessories Facial Brush (£6.00). Dip the brush in hot water and create circular motions on your skin. Concentrate on congested areas such as the jaw line, chin and around the nose. Always clean your brush with an anti- bacterial soap and let it dry, to prevent build-up of bacteria.

If cellulite is an issue for you, and let’s face it who doesn’t have the odd lump or bump to deal with, then help tone and firm with the Body Massager (£8.00). Apply the Mineral Detox Firming Hip & Thigh Gel (£10.00) to problem areas, then use the Body Massager to tone, firm and enhance the application. Enriched with Seaweed Extract and Caffeine, this energising gel is formulated to help skin appear firmer and more toned. Create deep circular motions on the hips and thighs to encourage the removal of toxins.

For an intense weekly deep cleanse, incorporate the Super Rich Cleansing Balm (£13.00) into your evening routine. This luxurious balm enriched with Avocado, Jojoba and Natural Floral Oils renews your skin by deeply cleansing, toning and exfoliating in one indulgent treatment. Warm the balm in your hands until it feels smooth, inhale the therapeutic aromas and massage in your face and neck using small circular movements. Soak the muslin cloth in warm water, squeeze out any excess and hold over your face and neck for a few seconds before lightly polishing off and rinse with cold water.

TOP TIP For a great morning boost to further invigorate the skin and stimulate blood circulation, try alternating your shower temperature from hot to cold, to keep circulation stimulated: it will make you feel great too. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water to keep the skin hydrated and flush through toxins as well.”

Use the Skin Resurfacing Mask (£15.00) to smooth and restore radiance to your complexion. Boost your skin once per week using the gentle exfoliating mask to re vitalise and renew tired looking skin. The natural fruit acids of Bilberry and Sugar Cane will help your skin appear radiant and renewed whilst the intense blend of Salicylic Acid and Vitamin E will leave fine lines appearing visibly smoother.”

Perfectly groomed eyebrows are at the forefront of the beauty industry, and you will find many magazine articles and beauty shows giving you tips to create that perfectly defined brow. The shape, thickness and arch of the eyebrow are used to express human emotions such as empathy, surprise and anger and are important in giving the face a fresh, attractive and youthful appearance.

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

HAVE THEY OR HAVEN’T THEY?

I

n the world of Hollywood Celebrity the words “I haven’t had surgery” seem only to apply to larger procedures. For if celebs were really not having surgery then the only other explanation is that they must have found the fountain of eternal youth!

The definition of plastic surgery has changed over the years. For most people Botox, fillers and laser treatments don’t count. So when celebs say ‘I haven’t had plastic surgery’, what they really mean is ‘I haven’t had anything major done - I haven’t sliced into my face” Here we take a look at some of today’s leading stars to see if we can uncover the truth...

Madonna Over the years Madonna has insisted that she has not undergone any procedures; but recently told a friend that she has ditched the surgical treatments, fearing that they are making her appear ‘a freak’. There is certainly a dramatic difference: her forehead, eyes and cheeks lack the lines you would expect of a woman in her fifties, her face is fuller than it was ten years ago, her upper eyelids appear much tighter, her lips have the classic ‘bee-stung’ appearance, and her nose now appears sculpted and sharper.

Simon Cowell Despite media-fuelled hype that Simon Cowell may have gone under the knife and had celebrity plastic surgery, it’s fair to say he has only ever admitted to having botox injections. In an interview with Piers Morgan, he said that he sees in a similar vain as cleaning his teeth. When pressed on the subject of plastic surgery and the ultimate question of whether he would ever have it, his response was extremely clear. “I think you have got to be very careful as a guy in particular that you can end up looking really, really weird!”

Catherine Zeta-Jones According to Zeta Jones she has not undergone cosmetic procedures in order to achieve her appearance. However, despite these assurances from the actress, there are still rumours and beliefs about procedures she has had done in the past. Chief among these rumours are that Zeta Jones has undergone a breast augmentation, a rhinoplasty (a nose job), and that the secret of her smooth, unwrinkled face is the result of dabbling in Botox injections. However, there is no proof that Zeta Jones has undergone celebrity plastic surgery, only opinions that she has.

Meg Ryan

Critics of Meg claim that bad plastic surgery is the sole reason for the rapid decline of the actress. Some are even bold enough to suggest that the only role that Meg will ever find is of a Joker in a Batman series.

128 THE CLINIC

Despite her age, it is also noticeable that Meg has no sagging skin making her susceptible of undergoing neck-lift and forehead procedures. It will not be an overstatement to suggest that Meg has not been able to hide anything at all.

Beyonce Beyonce plastic surgery has long become a centre of attention. Beyonce, 32, has been reported to have had several plastic surgery procedures along her career to reach the stardom. It has been mentioned that she has had breast implants in early 2002. If we are comparing Beyonce’s photos from the past decade and the most recent one, it is obvious that she was having smaller breasts with a more natural look. And the recent breasts appear significantly bigger and rounder than before. Although some people believe that they might be as the result of weight gain, but we think that they are more than just a weight gain, as her breasts look fake and unnaturally bigger. Additionally, some celebrity watchers and celebrity gossip websites claim that Beyonce’s breast size has increased from a small B-cup to a solid D-cup. Dr. Anthony Youn on his blog explained that Beyonce looks like to have breast implants, she looks great and not overdone. However, Miami plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Salzhauer seems unsure about Beyonce’s breast implants, he stated that Beyonce’s breast appears bigger, however, it could be as the result of weight gain, push up bra or breast augmentation. These days with the advanced plastic surgery and techniques, plastic surgery can give you a more natural look and hard to tell. In addition to having breast implants, she was also rumoured to have had liposuction. The photo that was taken while she was in the beach St Tropez, France reveal that she probably has a liposuction, as her stomach looks very firm. Additionally, we can see the lumpiness on her stomach which indicates that she possibly have a liposuction. Moreover, it has been mentioned that she has had a nose job (rhinoplasty), as Beyonce nose was bigger and thicker, and the new nose seems have been narrowed. It looks more elegant and fit well in her face. Further, Beyonce’s new lips appear thinner, which make us speculate that she has also had a lip reduction as well. Well, what do you think? Does she have plastic surgery?

Cameron Diaz

shares her secrets of how to look amazing – just like her

H

ave you ever looked at Cameron Diaz and thought, “Man, I would love to look like her”? Well, here’s the good news — you can with her new fitness and nutrition tome, The Body Book, but here’s the bad news? It’ll take a lot of work.

Whether it’s thanks to her “one of the guys” demeanour, her much-publicized love of surfing and snowboarding, or just because you loved her in “The Sweetest Thing,” “or there’s something about Mary” when Cameron talks

www.themovieplanet.wordpress.com

about getting fit and healthy, you actually feel compelled to listen. And unlike some stars, there are no trends to follow, just a surprisingly massive amount of science to get through. Now, this isn’t necessarily advice you haven’t heard before, but something about the way she relays it through a combination of information, personal anecdotes, and yes, the very real fact of knowing what she looks like drives everything home in an interesting and palatable fashion. Here, we check out 15 tips we genuinely found useful from “The Body Book”.

the

CLINIC

Eat Breakfast You’ve heard it’s the most important meal of the day a million times, but Cameron points to two very specific things she needs it for: being able to think straight in the morning, and brightening her skin enough to add makeup to (that last tip is from her makeup artist).

Put Ponzu In your Oatmeal As an addendum to the last point, savoury lovers will adore this brilliant recipe Cameron gave for her favourite breakfast: oatmeal, sauteed zucchini with collard greens, caramelized shallots, egg whites and ponzu sauce. A little more interesting than berries, don’t you think?

Fill A Giant Bottle Of Water Before Bed Cameron emphasizes over and over throughout the book the importance of getting enough water, and gives her trick for ensuring she at least starts the day right. “Every night before I go to sleep, I fill up a big glass bottle with water and put it on my bathroom counter. First thing in the morning, right after I brush my teeth, I drink it.” Benefits include everything from replenishing your organs to helping you poop.

Check Your Pee Cameron doesn’t mince words about bodily functions, or about her attention to them. Point in fact? Her emphasis on checking the colour of her pee to make sure it’s pale yellow (good hydration) and not dark yellow (which indicates dehydration).

And While You’re At It ... Don’t be afraid of looking at your poo, either. While Cameron doesn’t go into as many specifics, as, say the Bristol Stool Chart, she does advise watching for significant changes in your bowel movements every time you flush. Processed Foods Are Killing Healthy Bacteria We already knew processed foods contained little in the way of nutrition, but we were shocked to read the additives contained in them to keep them on the shelves longer actually kill the healthy bacteria in our gut.

Exercise By Helping Others A small one, but a good one: get exercise at the office by volunteering to go pick up other people’s lunches.

Move Before Responding You’ve often heard you should count to 10 if your knee-jerk response is anger when in the midst of negotiations, but Cameron goes one better and advises people to get moving. If possible, stop the conversation that’s prompting angst and go for a walk or jog for 10 minutes. You’ll find you’re better prepared and less stressed about whatever it is you need to decide upon.

You’re Not Hungry, You’re Stagnant Instead of snacking when you’re feeling hungry after sitting around a bunch, work out. That might sound like a recipe for a crazed fitness lady, but as Cameron points out, what you’re usually feeling is your body’s need to gain oxygen — and you can only get it by making it work.

“Pain Is Weakness Leaving Your Body” As far as exercise mantras go, this one is pretty great. Cameron details the transformation she went through at age 26 on the set of “Charlie’s Angels” and the martial arts master who taught her to appreciate her body and work it harder than she ever expected. But we mere mortals can apply it to the burn we feel in our abs, backs and quads after a new, tough workout.

You’re Going To Regret Lasering Your Pubes While Cameron does recommend a bit of maintenance, she points out that pubic hair has some biological imperative (even if we’re not sure what it is).

Make Like A Baby At Bedtime Parents are all too familiar with the concept of creating a bedtime ritual to get their little ones in the mind-set for bed, but we tend to lose those routines as we get older. For Cameron, who says she sleeps in hotel rooms more than her own bedroom, in varying time zones, a bedtime ritual is the only thing that helps wind her down.

“Aging Healthfully Is Aging Happily” Cameron very sweetly discusses her respect for her grandparents’ strength and the obsession in our society with looking young, but nails it with one single sentence: “Our bodies age every single day that we are lucky enough to be alive.” You might be able to change how your body ages, but there’s no stopping it from happening, and no point in stressing about doing so.

Bad Habits Can Be Fixed With Slightly Better Habits There’s a lot in this book about forming healthy habits that stay with you for life, like building exercise into each day. But we like this specific take on breaking the bad habits, which is: figure out your personal routine as it applies to the habit, and find something at least a little healthier to replace it with. In Cameron’s case, it was a venti latte, which she replaced with a smaller decaf soy latte.

A 15-Minute Playlist Can Make Your Day If you have difficulty finding time to move for the (minimally) recommend 15 minutes a day, create a 15-minute playlist you love and have yourself a little dance party.

ALTERNATIVE THERAPIES 134 THE CLINIC

The great health debate... by Dawn Gudgin

Last year Prince Charles became embroiled in a row over the use of alternative medicine after he gave a speech embracing the practice. Speaking at the World Health Organisation, the Prince, a long-term advocate of complementary medicines, urged delegates to be ‘open-minded’ about alternative therapies. The prince said: “Modern medicine needs to adapt a more integrated and holistic approach.” He added: “I believe that the proper mix of proven complementary, traditional and modern remedies, which emphasise the active participation of the patient, can help to create a powerful healing force for our world. Thankfully I have always been quite a healthy person occasionally I may pop a Paracetamol but that is about as far as it goes, but the Prince’s comments did get me thinking, what other alternatives are there and how affective can they really be? Many people across the world use complementary and alternative medicine or “CAM” in addition to traditional or conventional treatments and therapies. Today’s complementary therapies are rooted in ancient traditions that intuitively understand the need to maintain balance and harmony with our minds, bodies and the natural world. The philosophy behind complementary medicine is that by restoring the balance of our body, mind and spirit we can achieve good health and well-being. For example, if we feel unduly uptight this may be expressed as a physical symptom such as a stomach ache, or headache, so by treating everything as one we can heal all of the problems. There are a wide range of different complementary therapies. Here, I give you some details of some of the most widely practised.

Acupuncture:

Hypnotherapy:

An ancient Chinese art based on the theory that Qi energy flows along meridians in the body, and can be stimulated by inserting fine needles at specific points. Acupuncture is used to treat asthma, addiction, arthritis, depression, anxiety, blood pressure disorder and problems with the digestive system. There are a wide range of studies demonstrating that acupuncture has a positive effect, including evidence to suggest it works by deactivating pain centres in the brain.

A method designed to induce relaxation to relieve certain symptoms or bring about a change in life style. It combines the skills of counselling and psychotherapy with the techniques of hypnosis. The induction of hypnosis produces an altered state of consciousness or awareness, similar to day dreaming or near-sleep.

Aromatherapy:

The use of magnets to help relieve muscular aches and pains, insomnia, headaches, and poor bladder control. It has also been claimed that the technique can have a positive effect on more serious conditions, such as cancer and circulatory diseases. The therapy is controversial, and is not advised for people having radiotherapy treatment, or those who wear a pacemaker.

The use of essential oils in treatments to improve physical and emotional wellbeing, relieve pain and alleviate tension and fatigue. Each aromatic oil, extracted from different parts of plants, is thought to have unique therapeutic properties. They can be added to a bath, massaged through the skin, inhaled directly, used with teas, or scented in a room.

Crystal healing: The use of crystals, gemstones and minerals in several ways to amplify and accelerate the self-healing processes within the individual patient. The theory is that healing can be speeded up by the interaction between the vibrational structure of the crystalline matter and the bio-magnetic energy patterns within the human body.

Herbal medicine: It is believed that as much as 80% of the world outside the industrialised countries relies on herbs for health. In fact, many commercially produced pharmaceutical products are derived from herbs, but herbal medicine uses the whole plant rather than an extract. Herbal medicines are used to help most illnesses including migraine, arthritis, depression, insomnia and lung, stomach, blood and skin disorders.

Magnet therapy:

Massage Therapy: The manipulation of soft tissue for therapeutic purposes, which may include the use of oil, salt glows, and hot and cold packs. Designed to create a state of being both relaxed and alert, relief from stress, faster recovery time from an injury, and a greater sense of self-awareness.

Osteopathy: A widely respected therapy which also has a regulatory council. Osteopaths manipulate the muscles and spine to improve mobility and balance. It can help with many types of injury and be useful in treating arthritis, sciatica, headaches, depression and digestion problems.

Homoeopathy: This works on the principle that what makes a healthy person unwell can be used to treat the same symptoms in someone who is unwell. But homoeopathic medicines are diluted to a high degree. They are used on asthma, allergies, anxiety, tension, menstrual problems and morning sickness.

THE CLINIC

135

Reiki: A technique developed in Japan which aims to promote the body’s own capacity to heal itself. The practitioner gently places his hands in specific positions on the body It is based on the belief that, by channelling spiritual energy through the practitioner, the spirit is healed, and the spirit, in turn, heals the physical body.

Reflexology: A type of deep foot or hand massage designed to relax the whole body through the reflex response. The thumbs are used extensively to break up crystalline deposits which have formed at the nerve endings, particularly on the bottom of the feet. There is some research to suggest that therapy can have beneficial effects, particularly on kidney and intestinal function.

Shiatsu: Shiatsu means finger, or thumb pressure. Like acupuncture, it is based on the theory that meridians, or lines, of energy run through the body, and can be manipulated. Techniques include pounding, stretching and rocking. Pressure may be applied by use of forearms, elbows, palms, feet and knees. The end result should be greater mobility and flexibility, a clearer sense of one’s body, and a sense of being both relaxed and energised.

Yoga: Has been shown to alleviate stress and, at the physical level, yoga has been seen to be useful in the treatment of those who suffer conditions that affect or are affected by posture, such as backache and arthritis.

Is ‘cupping’ a miracle cure or just a silly celebrity health fad?

J

ennifer Anniston, Gwyneth Paltrow, Victoria Beckham, Geri Halliwell, Paris Hilton, David Arquette, Lady Gaga and even tennis ace Andy Murray have endured the treatment but apart from creating silly circles on your back what is behind this alternative therapy that everyone seems to be practising.

It is quite easy to spot if someone practises Cupping because of the tell-tale sign evident across the persons back. Small red circular marks a bit like crop circles but on the back and not a field can be seen and in some cases they do look quite painful and alarming but apparently looks can be deceiving. The practise of Cupping, which is an ancient Asian therapy, is where heated cups are placed onto the skin, creating suction that supposedly improves blood flow. Typically, a flame is first placed inside a glass or rubber cup, so the heat can create a partial vacuum, before the flame is removed and the cup held to the skin for about three minutes.

skin to dispel stagnation;. stagnant blood and lymph, thereby improving qi flow to treat respiratory diseases such as the common cold, pneumonia and bronchitis. Cupping also is used on back, neck, shoulder and other musculoskeletal conditions. Its advocates say it has other applications and can be used to treat a broad range of medical conditions such as; blood disorders (anaemia, haemophilia), rheumatic diseases (arthritic joint and muscular conditions), fertility and gynaecological disorders, skin problems (eczema, acne) as well as improving general physical and psychological well-being.

Dating back 5,000 years, Cupping is one of the oldest methods of traditional Chinese medicine as a form of acupuncture, and is based on the idea that suction from the cups draws the skin up and mobilises blood and energy around the body by creating a vacuum on the patient’s

beautiful smile is the most universally recognised facial expression, it unanimously signifies a sign of happiness – some say it can be more attractive to smile than to wear make-up, so it’s important to look after your teeth.

What is a crown made of?

What is a crown? A crown is an artificial restoration that fits over the remaining part of a prepared tooth, making it strong and giving it the shape of a natural tooth. A crown is sometimes known as a ‘cap’.

Crowns can be made of a variety of different materials and new materials are continually being introduced. Some of the most popular options are listed below. Porcelain bonded to precious metal: This is what most crowns are made from. A precious metal base is made and then porcelain is applied in layers over Porcelain crowns: these crowns are made entirely out of porcelain and are not as strong as bonded crowns, but they can look very natural and are most often used for front teeth All-ceramic crowns: this modern technique offers a metal-free alternative, which can give the strength of a bonded crown and the appearance of a porcelain crown. Therefore it is suitable for use in all areas of the mouth Gold alloy crowns: gold is one of the oldest filling materials. Today it is used with other metal alloys to increase its strength, which makes it a very hardwearing restoration. These crowns are silver or gold in colour.

Why Would I need a crown? Crowns are an ideal restoration for teeth that have been broken, or have been weakened by decay or a very large filling which completely caps or encircles a tooth or dental implant. Crowns are often needed when a large cavity threatens the on-going health of a tooth. They are typically bonded to the tooth using dental cement. A crown could be used for a number of other reasons, for instance: • you may have discoloured fillings and would like to improve the appearance of the tooth • you may have had a root filling which will need a crown to protect what is left of the tooth • it may help hold a bridge or denture firmly in place. While inarguably beneficial to dental health, the procedure and materials can be relatively expensive

How long will a crown last? Properly cared for a crown should last for a standard period of 10 years.

What is a veneer? A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain made to fit over the front surface of a tooth, like a false fingernail fits over a nail. Sometimes a natural colour ‘composite’ material is used instead of porcelain.

When would I need a veneer? Veneers can improve the colour, shape and position of your teeth. A precise shade of porcelain can be chosen to give the right colour to improve a single discoloured tooth or to lighten the front teeth. A veneer can make a chipped tooth look intact again. The porcelain covers the whole of the front of the tooth with a thicker section replacing the broken part. Veneers can also be used to close small gaps, when orthodontics (braces) are not suitable. If one tooth is slightly out of position, a veneer can sometimes be fitted to bring it into line with the others.

How are teeth prepared for a veneer? Some of the shiny outer enamel surface of the tooth may be removed, to make sure that the veneer can be bonded permanently in place later. The amount of enamel removed is tiny and will be the same as the thickness of the veneer to be fitted, so that the tooth stays the same size. A local anaesthetic (injection) may be used to make sure that there is no discomfort, but often this is not necessary. Once the tooth has been prepared, the dentist will take an ‘impression’ (mould). This will be given to the dental technician, along with any other information needed to make the veneer. The colour of the surrounding teeth is matched on a shade guide to make sure that the veneer will look entirely natural

What are the advantages of veneers? Veneers make teeth look natural and healthy. Because they are very thin and are held in place by a special strong bond (rather like super-glue) very little preparation of the tooth is needed. Some types of veneers don’t need any preparation at all

What Are the Disadvantages of Dental Veneers? It takes roughly a week or two for your teeth to get used to the adjustment. It is common to have minor sensitivity after your teeth have been prepared for your veneers while wearing the temporary veneers. If you suffer from bruxism, clenching or grinding of your teeth, veneers can be damaged, chipped or cracked from this. Veneers are not a good choice for individuals with unhealthy teeth (for example, those with decay or active periodontal disease), weakened teeth (as a result of decay, fracture, large dental fillings) or for those who have an inadequate amount of existing enamel on the tooth surface.

How long will a veneer last? Veneers should last for many years; but they can chip or break, just as your own teeth can. Your dentist will tell you how long each individual veneer should last. Small chips can be repaired, or a new veneer fitted if necessary.
