VIRTUOSITY

Ralph & Russo presents its first virtual couture collection in the wake of COVID 19

14 LUXURY LIVING

British couturiers Ralph & Russo have unveiled its Fall-Winter 20/21 collection as a fantastical collaboration. Showcasing their stunning gowns against virtual backdrops of the “wonders of the world they encourage our minds to travel to a world during a period of international lockdown and doom and gloom

15

LUXURY LIVING FASHION u

Envisioned by Tamara Ralph while at her home in lockdown the Collection is uniquely presented against the seven contemporary wonders of the world as a journey through the seasons and brought to life by an equally international individual; avatar and muse, Hauli. Named in traditional Swahili after strength and power, Hauli is at once rooted in African origins and a reflection of womankind; of the beautiful and inspiring women bringing courage and positive change to all four corners of the world. Abundant with vibrant tones of yellow-gold and sky blue, hues of lavender and fuchsia pink, the collection harkens to the natural palette of our planet, citing seven of the globe’s most unique and awe-inspiring locations, and enhancing silhouettes with intricate floral details.

Floral details were key – adding the nature aspect to the creations. From three-dimensional organza blooms to swathes of oral taffeta and tweed – each distorted, blurred like watercolours, and digitally printed – the collection defies singularity, bridging the gap between technology and the elements. Starting from sketches, the designs were transposed either in fabric or on screen and given the attention to detail it is difficult to spot the difference. The couture house describes the collection as a reflection on the “far-reaching beauty of our natural world and the digitally charged future.”

ARE MODERN DESIGNERS BLURRING THE LINES BETWEEN

STREETWEAR AND LUXURY FASHION? Streetwear is one of the most striking retail and fashion trends to have evolved in recent years

After Louis Vuitton’s men’s Spring Summer 2020 show, man of the moment Virgil Abloh appeared in front of the cameras in a laid back

sportswear jacket and trainers not attire you’d expect from a luxury fashion

brand designer or was it? Whilst in the past fashion houses had avoided associating with streetwear brands, fearing that the association would

dilute their luxury appeal today every luxurious brand has a streetwear collection once again blurring the lines between streetwear and luxury.

But wait a minute this isn’t the first time that Louis Vuitton have tapped

into the growing market of the streetwear / urbanwear movement, back

in 2009 Marc Jacobs, then-creative director of Louis Vuitton, collaborated with Kanye West to design a capsule collection of luxury sneakers for the

French fashion house this collection was the start of West’s journey as

a designer and more importantly cemented the fact that streetwear had invade our high-end luxury market.

LUXURY LIVING FASHION u

Gucci, Prada, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga, Tommy Hilfiger and Yves Saint Laurent to name but a few all have streetwear brands but why have such storied brands with long histories and legacy taken this alternative path? The answer is simply whereas most fashion labels struggle to redefine themselves, streetwear evolves organically by staying close to the ground. As a result, more and more traditional fashion brands are trying to capitalize on streetwear’s particular element of cool. We all know that the rain mac by Yves Saint Laurent is elegant, timeless and luxurious but it’s the same year after year after year and for millennials who want to look edgy and different day in, day out street wear allows them this opportunity whilst still being able to flaunt the fact that they are a wearing a named brand. Consisting of a loose combination of apparel like hoodies, sneakers, t-shirts, face caps, tracksuits, and jackets, one of the most captivating things about streetwear is that it is a hundred percent practical. Before, almost everyone who wanted to be fashionable would wear whatever it took to achieve high fashion status – however, uncomfortable or impractical it might be. So when streetwear turned into a high fashion style, it was only a matter of time that consumers would latch onto it and demand it in high volume after all who doesn’t want to feel comfortable!

LUXURY LIVING FASHION u

Another major factor in this paradoxical shift from haute couture to luxury streetwear is Instagram today followers of fashion want it at their fingertips, gone are the days when fashion magazines were the traditional authoritarians on fashion, today social media has made what was once niche brands such as Stussy, A Bathing Ape, and Supreme once reserved only for followers of Hip Hop and other sub cultures into mainstream brands with A-listers like BeyoncÊ, Kanye West and others all signing up for collaborations. Streetwear is not a trend that is going to fade away anytime soon, aligned with a popular culture that spans fashion, art and music it is estimated that of the global apparel market which is worth some 15 trillion dollars streetwear represents 10% of this market and is expected to continue growing. So it’s time to ditch the heels and grab a pair a sneakers!

CONTEMPLATING THE

NATURAL WORLD

Boucheron’s long-standing history has blossomed since its creation in 1858 and although it may be the oldest jewellery house in Paris’s iconic Place Vendôme, the maison is never one to stand still having captured real flowers for eternity and turned sand and shavings of marble into precious baubles in the past its newest collection looks to the skies utilizing modern technology and expert craftsmanship

Titled Contemplation, the collections focuses on the natural beauty of the world capturing the ephemeral movement of a cloud a raindrop falling or a feather’s swirling in flight. Comprising of sixty-seven pieces, it is to date the most personal and intimate collection of High Jewellery ever created by Creative Director Claire Choisne with an extremely sensorial approach: pieces seem to quiver with the slightest breath on the skin, fragments of stars are caught in airy matter, a cloud of diamonds swirls on a weightless necklace.

Here Claire Choisne highlights the key pieces within the collection

GOUTTE DE CIEL – SKYDROP One of my most favourite pieces within the collection with this necklace “I wanted to capture the impalpable and to offer a piece of sky to wear around the neck. This dream was made possible the day we discovered Aerogel.” Aerogel is the material that has the lowest density in the world, consisting of 99.8% of air and 0.2% of silica. NASA actually uses it in space, on panels, to capture stardust. Aerogel has the same properties as the sky, and is blue for the same reasons the sky is blue. Therefore its colour varies depending on the light. Outwardly this stone looks similar to that of a moonstone but in terms of strength it is much more inferior to a mineral so the stone is enclosed by a shell of rock crystal set and encrusted with diamonds. There is also a bracelet with an aerogel insert to complete the set.

29

LUXURY LIVING FASHION u

NUAGE EN APESANTEUR “I wanted to evoke a cloud surrounding a woman’s throat, rather than represent one literally”, explains Claire Choisne. But how could it be possible to replicate, the vaporous effect of the millions of droplets which come together to form a cloud in nature, in a piece of jewelry? Maison Boucheron consulted a programmer, who devised an algorithm to bring this unique cumulus to life. It took two years to develop the materials for this unprecedented necklace, which consists of nearly 10,000 titanium threads capped with 4,018 diamonds and glass beads simulating the droplets of water. Following every movement of the neck and appearing weightless like a cloud.

30 LUXURY LIVING

FLÈCHE SUR CIEL The inspiration behind the necklace was the “Open Sky” work of art by James Turrell located in Naoshima, Japan. When laid, this necklace depicts a window onto the sky. When worn, it has the suppleness of fabric. The structure of this necklace is made of titanium, composed by numerous hexagons forming a supple knit. Every hexagon is covered with airbrushed mother of pearl and with diamonds. What is also fabulous about this piece is that the 30 layers of lacquer covering the mother of pearl are so thin that we can still see the iridescence of mother of pearl under them. On its surface, Claire Choisne has chosen to represent a stormy weather with the mother-of-pearl diamond clouds set off by slate coloured lacquer. This celestial vision is further illuminated by a 35-carat sugarloaf tanzanite with a deep ultramarine hue. In the same cloudy spirit, a rectangular ring has a plateau of white lacquer adorned with an 8.52-carat tanzanite, surrounded by a diamond-paved setting.

31

LUXURY LIVING FASHION u

EN PASSANT - PASSING THROUGH Utilizing designs from the archives and dating back to 1901, Boucles D’Oreilles en Passant represents the movement of passing clouds hovering over the ear “expressing the lightness and movement of a cloud perfectly.” The result is a wholly contemporary earring simple enough to be worn every day.

32 LUXURY LIVING

MURMURATION A murmuration is a flock of birds performing an aerial ballet through the sky. With this piece Boucheron wanted to make such an ephemeral moment eternal by engraving it into rock crystal.

33

LUXURY LIVING FASHION u

CARESSE DE PLUME - FEATHER CARESS It is the softness of a feather and its caress that we wanted to depict here. The mother of pearl was worked extremely thinly, to the point that we engraved the “lashes” of the feather in it while keeping the natural curve of the feather. The necklace is set with 1.6cts of diamonds and Akoya cultured pearls. There is also a ring and brooch to complete the set.

JACOB & CO UNVEIL 2nd EDITION

BILLIONAIRE WATCH Jacob & Co.’s latest Billionaire watch is encrusted with 189 carats of white diamonds and will set you back a cool $7million

From midtown Manhattan to Moscow Jacob & Co’s jewellery and timepieces have become iconic expressions. His exclusive creations and their assertive character are prized by a great many celebrities, musicians and sportspeople, in particular basketball players Shaquille O’Neal and Stephon Marbury, as well as politicians and royalty. Inspired by the impossible, Jacob Arabo often referred to as “Jacob the Jeweller” is energized by the creative challenge of envisioning and realizing new jewellery and timepiece designs that will continue to intrigue, adding to his already illustrious list of excusive watch designs Jacob & Co. have recently introduced a second edition Billionaire Watch, the first edition which was encrusted with 239 carats of diamonds and famously purchased by Floyd Mayweather for a staggering $18million. The latest incarnation has been dubbed the ASHOKA Billionaire watch and is encrusted with 189 carats of William Goldberg’s Ashoka diamonds which are named after King Ashoka Maurya, a famed thirdcentury warrior also regarded as one of India’s greatest emperors. With a rectangular shape, rounded corners, and 62 precisely-cut facets, the ASHOKA is quite rare firstly because of the ASHOKA diamonds are cut in a way that automatically makes then look larger than a standard emerald cut diamond in addition less than 1% of all rough diamonds even possess the potential to become an ASHOKA - making the Billionaire ASHOKA an extraordinarily special piece. Underneath the diamond facade lays a skeletonized calibre JCAM09 tourbillon movement with a 72-hour power reserve and if the 62 precisely-cut ASHOKA diamond facets aren’t enough bling a further 19 jewels and a final rose-cut white diamond affixed to the crown add to the watches exclusivity 46 LUXURY LIVING

This is more than a trend, thankfully, in a recent culture shift many people are starting to

A DOUBLE EXPRESSION OF

FEMININITY

Jaeger-LeCoultre reinforces the alliance of fine watchmaking and high jewellery with two new stunning diamond encrusted watches 61

LUXURY LIVING FASHION u

Introducing two new High Jewellery watches for 2020, Jaeger-LeCoultre places its Calibre 101 in the spotlight once again. The two entirely original designs reaffirm the unique alliance between high jewellery and fine watchmaking made possible by this exceptional small mechanism. For the two new diamond-set timepieces, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s in-house artistic team has taken a jewellery-led approach – first, designing the forms of the bracelets and the style of gem-setting, then integrating the cases and movements into the designs. Whereas designing a watch normally takes the opposite approach, beginning with the case and then creating bracelets or straps to complement it. Both bracelets adhere faithfully to the classical high jewellery codes and are composed of pink gold set with diamonds – using only stones classified IF to VVS. However, the designs are utterly different in both form and character, emphasising the creative freedom allowed by the diminutive Calibre 101. 101 BAngLe The Bangle watch is an altogether bolder expression of femininity, inspired by the graceful geometry of Art deco and the strong forms of 20th-Century Modernism. A dynamic interplay of symmetry and asymmetry, the bracelet is set with 996 brilliant-cut diamonds (for a total 19.7 carats), graduated in size to emphasise the sweeping curves of the design. The artisans have combined the griffe (144 diamonds) and grain setting (852 diamonds) techniques to heighten the diamond’s three-dimensional effect and maximise the play of light.

rows of grain-set diamonds highlight the gold bands that run along both sides of the bracelet, supporting its structure. The bracelet needs no clasp as it delicately opens with a simple twist of its two sides.

62 LUXURY LIVING

101 SnoWdrop Inspired by the white bell-shaped flowers that are able to grow through a thin layer of snow in the Vallée de Joux, the manchette-style Snowdrop exudes delicate femininity. A circle of pear-shaped diamonds surrounds the dial to form a flower, and waves of diamonds repeat the petal pattern in perfect symmetry, all the way around the bracelet. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s designers chose a ‘griffe’ setting for the diamonds, which minimises the metal’s presence and allows light to pass through the stones from all angles. This intensifies the spark of the watch, creating an impression that the diamonds could almost be floating on the surface of the bracelet. With 904 diamonds, of which 204 are pear-shaped and the remainder brilliant-cut (for a total of 20.9 carats), the gem-setting work alone represents 130 hours of work by the jewellery artisans of the Manufacture Jaeger-LeCoultre. As seen from its profile, the bracelet’s structure is supported by two bands of gold, each of them grain-set with diamonds – a linear setting technique in which tiny beads of gold are pulled up from the surface of the metal and pushed over the stone to secure it.

63

LUXURY LIVING FASHION u

CALIBre 101 MoVeMent As watchmaking became increasingly sophisticated from the late 19th century onwards, Jaeger-LeCoultre developed new solutions to many horological challenges – including miniaturisation. Among the Maison’s innovations were the diminutive LeCoultre Calibre 7Hp, introduced in 1880 for small enamelled and gem-set watches; and LeCoultre Calibre 6eB, introduced in 1908, which measured barely more than 1cm square. originally conceived and developed for jewellery watches and introduced in 1929 by La grande Maison, Calibre 101 revolutionised feminine watchmaking – its minuscule size and baguette shape offering new realms of aesthetic freedom to designers. developed half a century before the advent of computer-aided design and production technology, Calibre 101 is a remarkable feat of miniaturisation. At 14mm long, less than 5mm wide and weighing barely one gram, the tiny, hand-wound calibre remains the smallest mechanical movement in the world. It is also one of the world’s oldest movements that continues to be in production. These rare timepieces have graced the wrists of exceptional women, including Queen elizabeth II, who wore one – a gift from France’s président– for her coronation in 1953.

64 LUXURY LIVING

now more than 90 years old, the movement has benefited over the years from many improvements in materials and machining, but its dimensions and architecture remain unchanged. The present, fourthgeneration movement, Calibre 101/4 has 98 components (compared with the original 78), measures 14 mm x 4.8 mm, with a thickness of 3.4 mm (a volume of 0.2 cm3), and weighs barely one gram. Its balance wheel oscillates at 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hertz frequency) and the mainspring provides a power reserve of 33 hours. due to the tiny scale, each of the components must be custom-produced and adjusted – making every Calibre 101 unique. only a handful of watchmakers at the Jaeger-LeCoultre Manufacture have ever mastered the skills necessary to produce and assemble movements at such a microscopic scale. Consequently, only a few dozen can be produced each year to grace the wrists of exceptional women.

TRIBUTE TO ROME Capturing the iconoclast spirit and rock attitude of an era, Bvlgari introduces the Barocko High Jewellery collection, a bold, colourful and precious collection highlighting links between the Maison, the city of Rome and the Baroque style. 74 LUXURY LIVING

For over 130 years Rome has been the muse of Bulgari thanks to its vibrancy, architecture and colourful aesthetic and with its newest collection the Maison embraces its heritage taking inspiration from the 16th century Roman Barouque period. With rich kaleidoscopic colours, extraordinary light effects, fanciful shapes and exquisite details, Barocko is one of the most alluring new collections in a while embracing both eccentricity and sophistication in perfect balance. Under the guidance of creative director Lucia Silvestri, Bvlgari have sourced some of the rarest and most precious stones in the world for these one-off pieces, their beauty harnessed by the brand’s skilled artisans.

RUBY DRAPERY RING Spectacular like a statue, sinuous like a dress, the Ruby Drapery ring is inspired by Baroque sculptures, also known as “living marbles”. Highly expressive due to their dynamic poses, fluid movements and swirling draperies, these masterworks perfectly epitomized the creative vision of an era. Drawing from this aesthetic approach, Bvlgari successfully takes on the challenge of crafting precious metals and gemstones - hard and rigid by nature – into a piece of extreme vitality and motion. Flawlessly three-dimensional, the Ruby Drapery ring flaunts an extraordinary construction that can be appreciated from any point of view. Crafted with white gold, diamonds and sensational ruby the Ruby Drapery is a masterpiece of both nature and human ingenuity.

LADY ARABESQUE NECKLACE For the first time, Bvlgari juxtaposes natural fancy pink sapphires and Paraiba tourmalines. The amazing gold arabesques literally flow among the stones, giving an ultra-modern take on Bvlgari’s iconic “bib” style: a swirl of femininity.

LUXURY LIVING FASHION u

CABOCHON EXUBERANCE NECKLACE A tribute to one of Rome’s most powerful noble families, the Cabochon Exuberance necklace is inspired by the Horti Farnesiani, a spectacular secret heaven in the heart of the Eternal City that hosted luxuriant parties during Baroque. Drawing from the decorative motif of the Palazzo’s scenic façade, Bvlgari envisions a bold jewel, large in proportions, generous in colour and abundant in sophisticated details. Eleven cabochon gemstones of exceptional quality, colour and weight are combined together in one single jewel: a rare gem set put together with patience and determination. Each of these spectacular gems could be individually set in stand-alone jewels: with its MAI TROPPO approach, Bvlgari combines them into one amazing necklace with matching earrings for a daring chromatic explosion.

78 LUXURY LIVING

MOSACIO NECKLACE Imagination has no limits. Capturing the visionary spirit of Baroque, the Mosaico necklace is a masterful blend of movement, dynamism and shapes. Rich diamond geometries intertwine with a constellation of round emeralds, in a dramatic crescendo of sparkle and luminosity. A unique set of 18 rare round brilliant-cut emeralds culminates with the magnificent Zambian emerald of 5,30ct surrounded by pure white diamonds An opulent design, conjuring the most iconic architectures of the era all impeccably executed despite their complexity.

LADY RUBELLITE NECKLACE Bvlgari revisits its iconic sautoir from the 70s in a contemporary key. The perfect whiteness of the pearls (a staple of Baroque jewellery) combines with the bright colours of amethysts and rubellites endowing the necklace with a playful and extremely feminine rhythm. The precious melody culminates in the pendant featuring a magnificent Jaipur rubellite of 60,79 carats whose intense colour seems to conceal a seductive and mysterious fire. Reimagining the classic string of pearls into a piece of pure exuberance and colour, Bvlgari crafts an ultra-modern sautoir around a showstopping 60.79 ct rubellite. Smooth amethyst and rubellite beads of various dimensions give the piece an exquisite sense of movement, while the swaying tassels and the sophisticated diamond decorations testify the synergy between the expert hands of the Maison’s craftsmen and the creative vision of its designers.

80 LUXURY LIVING

WINGS OF ROME NECKLACE Emotion, pathos and passion: Rome’s Sant’Angelo Bridge is one of the highest expressions of Baroque architecture. With its ten magnificent angel statues, the iconic landmark inspired the Wings of Rome necklace, a diamond masterpiece of overwhelming beauty. As the master of gemstones, Bvlgari brings its creative approach to the world of diamonds – multi-shaped diamonds are tilting upwards as if they were sparkling feathers attached to the wings. Rich in movement, lightness and compelling vitality, the jewel is an imaginary walk through the marvels of the Eternal City.

THE FAR REACHES OF

THE WORLD The worldwide COVID 19 pandemic has changed our travel habits completely, and whilst we all dream of travelling to some far away destination it seems that every day a new travel destination is added to the restricted list and for weary travellers looking to book that next luxury escape it seems that there are very few places left in the world to go

But fear not, here at Luxury Living Magazine we showcase three far flung destinations of the beaten track that

have not reported any cases of the coronavirus so far and still offer a touch of that much needed touch of luxury. SOLOMON ISLAND If your definition of luxury is waking up to the sound of the ocean, a decadent meal of fresh seafood, exploring the flora and fauna on untouched islands, or a getaway on a private liveaboard yacht, the Solomon Islands can

fulfil all your luxe fantasies. Made up of more than 900 tropical islands and atolls, this South Pacific paradise offers a range of indulgent activities and accommodation.

84 LUXURY LIVING

The 4-star Heritage Park Hotel is the height of luxury in the Solomon Islands and if you’ve spent your time on a remote far-flung isle, the creature

comforts on offer will be a welcome treat. Located in the heart of Honiara, the hotel is a former residence of two Governors General; Sir Baddeley Devesi and Sir George Lepping.

Its design blends with its aesthetic cultural heritage and recreates with state-of-art architecture, a contemporary grace set

because they serve up one of the most scrumptious brownie’s ever. Decent wifi is also available, though free usage is limited. For more information visit: www.heritageparkhotel.com.sb

Luxurious Hotel CROATIA’S MOST

Secluded among the Elaphiti Islands off the coast of Dubrovnik is the care free island of Lopud here sits a majestic 15th century monastery which over the last twenty years has been, loving restored by philanthropist Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza into an elegant and beautiful boutique hotel

97

LUXURY LIVING TRAVEL u

Constructed in 1483 as a cloistered sanctuary for quiet contemplation and healing, this medieval fortified monastery has been sensitively restored in order to retain its integrity and authentic under the guidance of Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza and this summer opened its doors for the first time to guests. Offering the perfect balance between contemporary comforts of a modern home, within an authentic historical setting, complete with splendid views over the Adriatic and its numerous islands, the five unique suites are more than just a place to lay one’s head but a wonder to behold, with rooms filled with rare pieces of art from the private art collection of the Thyssen-Bornemisza family.

The 5,000 square foot monastery complex offers complete privacy and security as it is surrounded on all sides by an impressive fortification, crowned by a renaissance fortress reminiscent of a Game of Thrones set that doubles up as an event venue. The delightful garden is set on numerous terraces and is planted with over 80 species of plants, inspired by the Franciscan monks’ traditional knowledge of medicinal plants.

LUXURY LIVING TRAVEL u

RESTORING A MEDIEVAL MASTERPIECE The concept for this exclusive location is a testimony of dedication and generosity of Londonbased art-lover, Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza – who is the fourth generation in a long line of collectors. She first went to Croatia in 1992, to help to rescue artworks damaged in the war after the break-up of the Balkans. She spent ten years working tirelessly with the local authorities for the restoration of the “Golden Age” renaissance treasures of the churches there. When a local friar, Father Pio Mario, took her on a boat trip around the island of Lopud, she spotted the ruins of the monastery and adjoining 16th-century fortress, and fell in love with the building there and then. She couldn’t believe that such an architectural marvel had been neglected for so long because it still maintained a spiritual resonance. Her second trip to visit was with Frank Gehry who suggested she take on the restoration, but to take her time, which she did. In her role as Creative Adviser, Thyssen-Bornemisza set about restoring the building, which had been left empty since 1822. The fortified monastery needed to be completely rebuilt, including the massive fortress that protects it. Miraculously, some of the original plaster from the 16th century had survived, making Thyssen-Bornemisza realise how important it was to retain as much of the building’s authenticity as possible. The consolidation of the structure was completed by engineers from Karlsruhe, which gave it back structure without losing the patina of the walls – an architectural feat in itself. A brilliant young architect from Zagreb, Rujana Markovic (from Studio Markovic), planned the new layout of the monastery to create five generous suites, instead of 12 small monk cells, updated with 21st Century technology and amenities. There is now a clear difference between the original structures that have been kept truly authentic and the new, modern design touches.

100 LUXURY LIVING

A LIVING ART GALLERY Behind the cloistered walls of LOPUD-1483, guests will be able to live in the manner of great art collectors. Over four generations, the Thyssen-Bornemisza family has amassed an impressive collection that spans between the 13th up until the 21st centuries and was said to be the largest collection after the Queen of England’s. Many of its most important works are housed today in the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum, opposite the Prado in Madrid. The selection of works housed in the Monastery includes original renaissance and gothic furniture as well as decorative arts and paintings, most of which adorned the Baron’s home in the Villa Favorita in Lugano and are being presented for the first time in decades. The whole experience is designed to offer guests the opportunity to “live like a collector”, in a style that is reminiscent of the taste and culture that has spread over generations of this extraordinary family of philanthropists. In the entrance of the property, one is greeted by two extraordinary wood carved angels that used to grace the entrance of Villa Favorita museum. They set a tone to the guest experience which is about to unfold. The heavy walnut dining table in the old refectory dates from 1550 and was used by Thyssen-Bornemisza’s father in his home for dinner parties. It is surrounded by walnut leather chairs, made in Dresden in the early 18th century. An early 1600’s masterpiece by Furini of St Sebastian hangs above it, alongside a cabinet holding precious Renaissance mugs, chalices and decorative bowls collected by her grandfather. Also found in the dining room is one of Thyssen-Bornemisza’s favourite pieces in the collection – a superb Franco Maria Pretti painting of the liberation of St Peter, which is dated 1645. In the salon, some gothic chests offer a powerful presence in contrast of the minimalist contemporary furniture of Paula Lenti and a 16th century tapestry of a king in his extraordinary garden who was as dedicated to collecting rare species of flowers. This competes for attention with an impressive Thomas Struth photograph of the Raffaelo chambers in the Vatican.

101

LUXURY LIVING TRAVEL POWER u

ANCIENT MEDICINAL GARDENS

u

The Monastery, originally a centre of contemplation and prayer, still holds the same healing qualities today. During the restoration, Thyssen-Bornemisza discovered an old pharmacy that dates back to the Renaissance and researched the libraries in Dubrovnik for original manuscripts on medicinal plants. The Franciscan Monks specialised in creating medicines and their pharmacy in Dubrovnik dates back to 1317. She decided to recreate the old Pharmacy in the monetary, including some original 15th and 16th century manuscripts and Mortars. Locals still produce creams using some of these ancient recipes today.

This discovery also led to the recreation of a medicinal herb garden and a sacred garden, featuring 80 plant species. They are designed to respect the ethos of St Francis of Assisi, who visited Dalmatia en-route to Syria in 1212 and inspired the creation of Franciscan monasteries in the region. Beds are planted with herbs that the monks would have used to brew tinctures. The garden was restored with attention to renaissance garden design. Between the monastery and sea, wide lawns have been created, dotted with olive and lemon trees and intersected by gravel path and a long pergola. The Arctic shaman Asa Andersson has further embraced the monastery’s history, while paying homage to its roots as a place of spirituality and healing. The sacred garden – with nine stations in energetically charged places and beds of healing botanicals – is a place in which guests can meditate on a soulful mini-pilgrimage, that will help them to align with the natural energy of their surroundings and its harmonious nature. In the evening, particularly after a light rain, the smells of the herb garden are intoxicating. 102 LUXURY LIVING

For those who prefer just to lie and soak in the sea views, or to practise yoga in the morning with the sea pounding on the rocks below, a wooden deck has been set into the lawns and scattered with Paola Lenti beanbag loungers. Above the monastery, on the rooftop of the fortress, a Sunset Terrace has been created. It offers direct sea access via a secret underground cave, spectacular views from loungers and shaded four-poster daybeds of Lopud’s little village and coastal paths, as well as the neighbouring islands of Šipan and Mljet and on a clear day, Korčula – the reputed birthplace of Marco Polo. Delicious local wine and food is on offer, created by worldclass chefs, using traditional recipes and Croatian ingredients such as oysters from nearby bays, Dalmatian ham, locally caught fish and octopus. Meals will be served outdoors or in the formal dining room or Old Kitchen, with its ancient open fireplace and bread oven, which is still used to make fresh pizzas. From there, one can enter a secret underground cave that leads directly to the sea – the same one used by the monks themselves to have a private swim away from the curiosity of the beach goers of the island

103

LUXURY LIVING TRAVEL u

A PLACE FOR CREATIVE INTERCHANGE AND JOYFUL GATHERINGS The spiritual energy of this ancient site is ideal for productive thinking and cultural exchange. Since 2005, during the restoration process, Thyssen-Bornemisza and her contemporary art Foundation TBA21, has invited over 200 artists including luminaries from the international art scene together for informal exchange and debate. Olafur Eliasson and David Adjaye, who created the art pavilion on the island “Your Black Horizon, kicked of this seasonal exchange with other art luminaires such as Hans Ulrich Obrist, Sam Keller, Steffan Arenberg, Mark Wigley, Cereth Whyn Evans, Superflex, Ragnar Kjartensson, dub poet Lynton Kwesi Johnson and the performance artist Peaches. 104 LUXURY LIVING

Groups can take over a multi-purpose indoor space within the monastery named ‘The Map Room’, which is appointed with high tech audio and visual equipment available for conferences for up to 30 people. The space can also be transformed into a dedicated children’s area, private cinema room or for a yoga and therapy retreat. The 400 sqm Fortress towers across the entire complex and provides an incredible al fresco rustic event space, complete with a high-end projector and sound system, with the ability to host parties for up to 250 people. There are two bars – one of which is on the rooftop and is ideal for yoga lessons or sunset cocktails. An onsite kitchen can cater for up to 60-80 people and separate toilet facilities are also within the site. There are discreet hiding places designed for those who wish to escape even the most private of gatherings. LOPUD-1483 is a place that encourages togetherness, whilst also providing for solitude and silence. 105

LUXURY LIVING TRAVEL u

LOPUD – AN ISLAND OF NATURAL BEAUTY Dating back to the Renaissance period, Lopud Island, the second largest of the Elaphiti islands, is situated between Koločep and Šipan. Historically, many of the boats used in the Spanish Armada were built on this island. All buildings apart from one modern hotel on the opposite side of the bay, all date back to the renaissance times. Old Villas, small palaces, numerous chapels, and ancient farmhouses dot the hills behind the Monastery, lending themselves to the authenticity of the whole island, which is planted up with orange, lemon and olive trees. Today, it is feted for its sandy beaches and quiet pace of life. The island’s natural beauty is preserved by its car free policy and visitors can follow the island paths through lush vegetation either by foot or bicycles. Kayaks are also available to hire to navigate the clear waters.

The natural beauty of the island – susceptible to the changing elements of the winds, currents, light and the night sky, are reminiscent of Shakespeare’s Illyria in Twelfth Night. The sunsets on Lopud are extraordinary, from clear skies to stormy days. The view from the monastery is undisturbed except for some islands in the distance. The evening light is golden, so much so that Olafur Eliasson created a light piece that TBA21 commissioned him to produce in 2005. It was moved from Venice where it was premiered at the Bienniale to Lopud in 2007. The sunset colours in the work mimic the ones outside exactly. The Pavilion that houses the work was designed by David Adjaye and is a ten-minute walk from the property. 106 LUXURY LIVING

ThE WORLD’S FIRST ENERGY-POSITIVE hOTEL, SVART, TO OPEN IN NORWAY’S ARCTIC CIRCLE IN 2022 The hotel will sit atop the Holandsfjorden Fjord, benefiting from 360-Degree View of the Svartisen Glacier..

The world’s first ‘energy-positive’ hotel, Svart, will open in Norway’s Arctic Circle

in 2022. Perched atop the crystal-clear waters of the Holandsfjorden fjord, at the base of the glacier itself, a glass-fronted, circular design will provide a 360-degree

panoramic view of the fjord, glacier and in the winter months, the spectacular Northern Lights, all without compromising on guests’ privacy.

The hotel, which is designed by the Norwegian architect firm Snøhetta, will have

approx. 100 rooms, an onsite education and design lab, and a sustainable farm producing ingredients for the hotel’s four restaurants.

114 LUXURY LIVING

Svart meaning black in Nowegian pays tribute to the dark colour of the Svartisen glacier’s ice. The

architecture is inspired by local coastal building traditions and stands on wooden piles dissolving the boundary between land and fjord. The shape of the hotel provides a panoramic view of the fjord and an experience of living in proximity to nature.

Svart is the first building to be designed and built according to the highest energy efficiency stand-

ards in the northern hemisphere. The hotel will save 85% of its annual energy consumption and it will harvest enough solar energy to cover both the hotel operations, including its boat shuttle operation, and the energy needed to construct the building.

The long terms plans for Svart are to go off-grid within five years of operation. This means that the hotel including its adjacent services, including the farm and the boat shuttles, will be completely self-sufficient in terms of electricity and waste management For more information on Svart, please visit: www.svart.no

Kagi Maldives Spa Island is one of the most exciting and unique Maldivian

ing-yet-warm toned architecture or its boutique vibe: the wellbeing offerings here are really something to write home about. This isn’t your normal resort

with a spa; the Baani Spa is an immersive and soothing retreat where days are full of self-care, good-for-you but-mouth-watering meals and restorative yoga sessions. We love the setting of the spherical spa which is perched out above

the lagoon, its yoga room where poses are complemented with sound therapy, and the clean-eating restaurant Spa Corner; Baani is set to become one of the Maldives’ most coveted wellness havens.

IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK! THE ICONIC HOTEL ON THE HILL IS TO BE CONVERTED INTO A PRIVATE MEMBERS HOTEL

No one hotel has achieved such mystic and legend as Chateau Marmont the famed faux-gothic castle on Sunset Boulevard, known for its use in movies like “La La Land” and as a site for celebrity parties, the hotel also has a scandalous history full of sex, drugs and tragedy...

130 LUXURY LIVING

LUXURY LIVING LIVING u

For 90 years, Hollywood’s Chateau Marmont hotel has kept guard over some of Sunset Boulevard, celebrities, rock stars, writers, and artists darkest secrets providing a discreet haven, it is said that “If you want to be seen in LA, go to the Beverly Hills Hotel. If you don’t want to be seen, go to Chateau Marmont.” Sitting above the sinful Sunset Strip, the Chateau Marmont is perfectly placed to keep an eye on the Hollywood shenanigans, unable to compete with the luxuriousness of competing hotels like the Beverly Hills Hotel or Beverley Wilshire, what the Chateaux Marmont lacked in glamour it certainly made up for in discretion. The ‘no-tell motel,’ that rented rooms by the hour, had one rule everyone was welcome as long as they paid their bills so it didn’t really check IDs too closely, and never saw or heard anything about its guests. Sitting above the sinful Sunset Strip, the Chateau Marmont is perfectly placed to keep an eye on the Hollywood shenanigans, unable to compete with the luxuriousness of competing hotels like the Beverly Hills Hotel or Beverley Wilshire, what the Chateaux Marmont lacked in glamour it certainly made up for in discretion. The ‘no-tell motel,’ that rented rooms by the hour, had one rule everyone was welcome as long as they paid their bills so it didn’t really check IDs too closely, and never saw or heard anything about its guests. Conceived in the late 1920’s by Fred Horowitz, an attorney who dreamed of owning an apartment building that connected the cities of Los Angeles and Beverly Hills, here in an onion field on a rise above a bridle path called Sunset Boulevard, Horowitz envisioned a tower of 43 apartments, with commanding views of all of Southern California. He directed an architect to mimic the lines of Chateau D’Amboise, a castle in the Loire Valley where each unit would be fully self-contained, with a kitchen, an underground parking space, and double-poured concrete walls that were both earthquake-resistant and soundproof. Unlike most hotels this hotel did not possess a lobby, a restaurant or even a bar it was simply just self-contained apartments. 132 LUXURY LIVING

It was here that sexpot Jean Harlow cavorted with her lover Clark Gable right under the eyes of her third husband Harold Rosson seemingly moving into two of the hotels bungalows with one rented for the newly married couple and the other so she could entertain her lover. 133

Sadly following the stock market crash Horowitz was forced to sell the building with the new owners converting it into a hotel and adding a few garden apartments, the aim was to appeal to European tourists heading to Los Angeles for the 1932 Olympics and because of its cheap rates and uncompromising attitude it soon became a haunt for Broadway actors and writers looking to escape the Hollywood hubbub. Anyone who is anyone has stayed at the Chateau Marmont, Johnny Depp often bragged that he and then girlfriend Kate Moss had christened every room in the hotel, while notorious hotel trashers Led Zeppelin would regularly ride motorbikes along the corridors and whilst the hotel had over the years seen its fair share of mischief and scandal it was the death of actor John Belushi in 1982 that cast the hotel in a whole new light, gone was the intrigue and wonder of what went on behind closed doors instead it became known as a shoddy, shady place with dark-humoured guests such as Rick James and Jean-Michel Basquiat asking to stay in Belushi’s death bungalow, Hollywood ghoul tours even began to stop outside. 134 LUXURY LIVING

Lean years followed, until in 1992 New York real estate investor Andre Balazs bought it. Balazs knew that celebrities’ affection for Chateau Marmont was its greatest asset, and he determined to build on this. He added a restaurant, bar, gym, business centre, and other amenities bringing the hotel up to a level of luxury the one remaining he kept in place however, was the privacy rules. He had staff members sign nondisclosure agreements which were backed up (and sometimes enforced) by threat of legal action. When the era of cell phones dawned, he instituted rules against the use of social media in public spaces and he hired staff members with the grace and steel to enforce these edicts without bullying. Celebrities returned to the Chateau in their droves, Beyoncé and Jay-Z hosted an Oscar night afterparty in garage, This is also the place where Britney Spears famously shaved of her hair during her mental breakdown and where Lindsey Lohan was evicted and subsequently banned from for running up a bill in excess of $40,000 (just like Warren Beatty during his early Hollywood years), it is also rumoured that actors Benicio del Toro and Scarlett Johansson hooked up in the hotel while Heath Ledger was surreptitiously filmed using cocaine on the hotel’s front balcony. (The actor sadly died of an overdose two years later.) The hotel had once again been embraced by the A-lister’s Sadly nothing last forever and following the worldwide COVID 19 Pandemic, Andre Balazs has confirmed that the 63-room hotel will be converted into a members owned hotel following a full refurbishment. Select members will become shareholders in the hotel paying regular fees to cover management costs. In exchange, they will be given use of a private dining area, a personal butler and the freedom to leave their belongings and come and go during extended stays. Members will also be able to sell their shares back to the management company or other approved members, as they would with any other real estate investment a representative for the hotel said. Looking at the SoHo brand this model of member owned hotels is a concept that will continue to grow and thankfully will also ensure that the privacy hungry Chateaux Marmont still remains private! 136 LUXURY LIVING

KANYE FOR PRESIDENT!

THE ALLURE OF THE CELEBRITY POLITICIAN As trust in our political leaders continues to fall, the world is looking to its other heroes for leadership and inspiration, but is this really wise?

LUXURY LIVING LIVING u

Rapper and sometime Trump supporter Kanye West has announced that he will be running for president of the United States. Without the tens of thousands of signatures needed to get on the ballot in all states or the backing of a small party, West’s chances of winning are almost zero, after all we all saw his chaotic presidential rally debut in South Carolina, and whilst West won’t be entering the White House any time soon, plenty of other celebrities have made a successful career in politics or heavily influenced it. Take, Marcus Rashford, recently the 22-year old footballer at Manchester United, was able to successfully campaign and influence the UK government to extend free school meals throughout the summer break thereby ensuring over one million under privileged children would receive free meals at a cost of £120 million. Celebrity and politics does in some ways seem to be a natural fit, after all celebrities are often charismatic and well versed in engaging with the media and already have more experience in working on camera and cultivating an image as well as the know-how and understanding of how to use social media, unlike outsiders that come out of nowhere, celebrities also benefit from name recognition and their campaigns or soundbites are more likely to garner much more media attention. For example, the media’s fascination withTrump’s antics earned him nearly $5 billion (£4 billion) worth of free airtime during the 2016 campaign.

But is it really the job of these famous figures to hold our political establishment’s to task? The rise of celebrity politicians has, in part, to do with changes in politics from traditional political skills to media management and fundraising. While the qualities of a celebrity are often poorly suited to the duties of governing, they can attract the necessary attention from the media without any prior political accomplishment. Additionally, increasingly blurred lines between entertainment and news (or infotainment) have lowered barriers for celebrities to enter politics. With the news focused on entertaining viewers more than informing them, profiling a celebrity candidate is a perfect story to run with. Networks in the US have been forever hopeful that Oprah Winfrey will throw her weight into a presidential race, but it is not just the role of the media and changes in politics that are important here. Voters are also drawn to celebrities because they are anti-establishment this is why in particularly millennials and generation Z, are gravitating towards famous figures such as Emma Watson with her advocacy for gender equality, or Stormzy with his anti-austerity and anti-racism work, for political inspiration instead of monotonous mainstream politicians. Though celebrities are not necessarily populist, there are aspects of their appeal that are similar. Celebrities are well known, charismatic but many who end up running for office lack a deep knowledge of politics and governing and have no experience governing. They may be able to use a simplistic communication style and direct language that appeals to the common man and gives the impression that they are relatable but they also tend to not have the same academic backgrounds – for instance, degrees or associations with prestigious institutions – that many politicians have.

Oprah Winfrey’s backing of Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign was the most successful celebrity endorsement in history, with many believing she will enter politics in the future

LUXURY LIVING LIVING u

Like populists, some celebrities promote their lack of knowledge and expertise. For example, the former wrestler Jesse Ventura attacked people with college degrees and bragged about being the only candidate for Governor of Minnesota that did not have a law degree. Counterintuitively, this anti-intellectualism is something that appeals to some voters who do not want to support a candidate that appears to be smarter than they are. These characteristics are seen as an advantage, representing a break from traditional politics. However, once in power, celebrities do not have a strong record of governing. Those that manage to be successful in political roles are the exception, not the rule, after all there was California governor and later US president Ronald Reagan, who rose to fame as a Hollywood actor but most often the lack of experience and knowledge of laws and governing often make their political turns disastrous. At best, they continue with the status quo of dysfunctional politics. One-time actor and former President of the Philippines, Joseph Estrada was impeached for corruption. The President of Guatemala, Jimmy Morales, has been accused of sexual abuse, though charges were later dropped, and blocking an investigation by the International Commission Against Impunity (CICIG) in Guatemala into his party and his relatives. The presidency of former singer Michel Martelly (known as “Sweet Micky”) of Haiti was dogged by delayed elections, accusations of corruption, political violence and rising poverty, the list goes on… Most importantly the rise of celebrity politicians is not a sign of the democratic field becoming more interesting or open. The rise of such candidates is a sign of political decline of democracies and wider frustration with professional politicians who voters feel disillusioned and distant from, we need more politicians who are willing to put their heads above the parapet and speak up on important issues without recrimination from their party if we are to rebalance the political clout back in favour of politicians, but more importantly we all need to remember fame and celebrity can be short-lived but political decisions have lasting consequences on our lives and our children’s lives and to risk this because our favourite celebrity has voiced some modicum of common sense would be extremely risky.

HOW COVID-19 HAS AFFECTED THE

LUXURY INDUSTRY

Are lives have forever been changed since the Covid-19 pandemic hit, travel restrictions have been implemented with countries closing their borders, businesses have had to look at news ways to continue operating with most of their staff work from home with many business being forced to either reduce their workforce or simply close, ultimately these effects have had a massive impact on the luxury market

The luxury and fashion market is a trillion dollar industry with China the indus-

try’s biggest consumer, as one of the first countries to enter lockdown followed

by Italy which is home to the largest number of luxury brands and production in the world it is no wonder that the luxury market has witnessed it worst trad-

ing figures in years with most brands reporting heavy losses for Q1 and analysis predicting a total decline of 20 to 35 per cent for the whole of 2020.

LVMH, the parent company of approximately 60 prestigious companies, reg-

istered a 17 per cent year-on-year drop in revenue this first quarter, while rival conglomerate Kering SA, whose portfolio includes Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta and Gucci, also saw its first-quarter sales plummet by around 15 per cent.

The drop in sales is among primarily attributed to brands inability to sell their

spring-summer 2020 collections. In China, some luxury brands were able to

make online sales (notably thanks to the WeChat application) but not all firms have deployed an omnichannel strategy and nor are they able to ensure deliveries. In Europe the lockdown came later. The end of Chinese tourism and the closing of stores small and large as well as department stores will have disastrous

effects on end-of-year inventory levels and on income. In the United States, the

same trend is looming with several historic players, including Neiman Marcus and JC Penney filing for bankruptcy.

Companies suffer not only on the sales side, but they also have to cope with a supply issue. According to a study led by Mckinsey & Company, 40% of the

world’s production of luxury goods occurs in Italian factories, most of these are medium-sized or family businesses that closed permanently during the crisis

and now with the implementation of travel restrictions around the world the movement of goods has impacted the chain even further.

To survive a more severe crisis than the financial crisis of 2007, the luxury goods companies has no choice but to rethink their strategies.

LUXURY LIVING LIVING u

A NEW ERA FOR LUXURY In the longer term, significant changes are to be considered. Here are five main trends that we may see: 1. A RAMPING UP OF dIGITALIzATION To dispose of their inventories during the closure of their stores, luxury houses will strive to offer an

online service with a first-class customer experience. It should be a flawless process from the product

offering through to the secured payment and timely delivery. Luxury groups will have to attract many more customers (at least temporarily) to their digital platforms and create a new customer journey.

In the short term, if they do not already have their own platform, some players may collaborate with

existing marketplaces (i.e., merchant websites managed by a third-party provider of goods or services), for example, Farfetch. But they will also have to roll out their own online sales channels to fully control the customer experience and preserve their brand image. This will involve initiatives such as the creation of virtual stores or ephemeral “pop-up shops”, as some players have already done on WeChat. 2. A SECONd-HANd MARKET BOOM Before the Covid-19 crisis, consulting firms BCG and Altagamma predicted that the second-hand

market, estimated at 22 billion euros in 2018, would grow by 12% by 2021. The emergence of ethical and ecological considerations among consumers is thus a favourable prospect for sites like Vestiaire Collec-

tive, founded in France and which has become one of the world’s largest online marketplaces to buy and sell pre-owned designer clothes and accessories.

3. A SHIFT IN CONSUMER

BEHAVIOUR TOWARd MORE RESPONSIBLE LUXURY

On April 11, Hermès reopened its Guangzhou

flagship store and reportedly achieved a $2.7 million turnover in a single day. Will the phenomenon of revenge spending observed

in China spread to other countries? Or does it illustrate the attractiveness of Hermès in particular?

While it is too early to draw conclusions, the example is interesting. It can be seen as an as-

piration for timeless luxury and for an ethically committed house. This trend was evident even before the start of the pandemic, in particular among millennials (those born between the early 1980s and the late 1990s): 64% indicated

that would be influenced by sustainability in their buying behaviour.

Still, many consumers and resellers will face a reduction in their financial resources and could put a hold on their purchases. This situation may force luxury houses to reduce the number

of collections and products offered each year. Consumers could even reconsider the concept of ownership and shift toward rental services. 4. A PROBABLE CUT IN

COMMUNICATION ANd PUBLIC

RELATIONS BUdGETS SPENdING In the current context, brands have had to re-

view the way they communicate. In particular, fashion weeks in their traditional format have been digitalized to virtual fashion shows. Vir-

tual consultation and live streaming product

launches will also become the norm ( for the time-being anyway), so faced with this, it is self-evident that luxury companies will have to

restrict spending and that communication and

events budgets will be the first to be impacted.

LUXURY LIVING LIVING u

5. CONSOLIdATIONS IN THE LUXURY INdUSTRY With the financial difficulties, many players, and in particular the smallest, will become more-affordable targets. The most financially solid players such as LVMH, Kering or Chanel will no doubt have the option of buying out competitors, subcontractors and even suppliers.

Confronted with the lasting effects of the crisis and taking into account the observed consumption trends, significant changes in the industry are to be expected. Concentration of ownership in the luxury sector will intensify, the shift to digital will become absolutely crucial, and efforts in terms of sustainable

development will be expected from consumers. The new business models linked to second-hand and luxury goods rental should also come out as winners.

This crisis, which forces us all to reconsider our purchasing decisions could bring the era of “slow luxury” and trigger a new awareness of the circular economy.

THE WORLD’S FIRST

GoldenNotes As the world comes to terms with the fallout of COVID 19, each and every country around the world is trying to minimise its debt, the June 2020 Global Economic Prospects describes both the immediate and near-term outlook for the impact of the pandemic and the long-term damage it has dealt to prospects for growth. The baseline forecast envisions a 5.2 percent contraction in global GDP in 2020, despite the extraordinary efforts of governments to counter the downturn with fiscal and monetary policy support.

On the other hand, the gold price continues to grow and reaches new highs seemingly every day. Why? Basically, the gold price rises for the same reasons it usually does, geopolitical unrest and events and the waning faith in fiat currency. Because of this a new gold currency

called the Goldback has recently being introduced in the state of Utah, USA, backed not only by real gold but also made from actual gold as well.

The goal of this initiative is to promote the use of sound money by providing spendable currency that

is backed by something which is inflation resistant,

which has proven to hold its value over millennia, and which can be carried in the palm of your hand, gold is one of the only substances which meets all

of these criteria, however over the past 2600 years, the value of gold has been so high that it has been

impractical to use for small purchases, enter the Goldback, the world’s first voluntary, complemen-

tary currency to be made of a spendable, beautiful, small denomination of physical gold.

Entrepreneur Jeremy Cordon originated this new

gold-based currency to make gold into more func-

tional money with denominations of 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 with each, 1 Goldback coin containing 1/1000 troy oz gold, making it the first ever gold

currency that is useful to buy something as small as a dozen eggs, or a loaf of bread.

THE EXCLUSIVE WORLD OF

R.M. CHAMPAGNES Artisan champagne brands are combining fresh approaches with long-held tradition to create a new wave of delicious and valuable bottlings - here’s what you need to know

184 LUXURY LIVING

Champagne, as a region, brand, and symbol of luxury is changing. While the area remains something of a spiritual home for bons vivants in France and beyond, it has transformed itself. Previously dominated by traditional, household-name producers, it’s now a more dynamic appellation, with a newly diverse yield—including artisanal offerings made by small grower-producers or récoltants-manipulants, known as R.M. champagnes. The shift has taken place as casual drinkers, collectors, and the Champenoise themselves have looked away from the bubbles streaming up in their flutes and turned their attention to the soil. It’s a move that, over the last 20 years, has led to a seismic shift in the way champagne is produced—much to the delight of drinkers worldwide. As a result, a variety of artisanal grower champagnes (those grown, harvested and produced by a single vineyard) are setting the region on a delicious and valuable trajectory.

185

LUXURY LIVING DINING u

SMALL SUCCESSES Today, many of the 19,000 small growers that once supplied the region’s stalwart brands, or Grandes Marques, have upended the status quo by returning to their lands and crafting their own wines in small batches—many of which rival luxury brands in value and prestige. Bottles from these small, artisanal brands carry the letters “R.M.” on the label. This specifies that the winemaker is also in control of the vineyards, truly growing the grapes and crafting the wine, rather than operating within the historical négociant model. For the majority of Champagne’s multicentury history, the winemakers and grape growers operated in separate sectors. The appellation’s thousands of small grape growers traditionally sold their produce to the established champagne houses—such as Krug, Bollinger, and Veuve Clicquot. Then, the purchased Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier grapes were fermented and blended into the final cuvées by these Grandes Marques. The powerhouse brands purchased from across the region, crafting wines that showed a house style or regional terroir stamp, which dominated nearly every cork popping and wedding toast worldwide. In recent decades, the growers, or vignerons, toiling on Champagne’s chalky, limestone slopes have started to go into business themselves. The success of pioneers like Anselme Selosse and Pierre Péters inspired others, and innovative importers like Kermit Lynch and Terry Theise helped launch artisanal champagnes on the international stage.

186 LUXURY LIVING

GENERATIONS OF KNOWLEDGE Traditionally, vineyards in Champagne have been passed down for generations within French families. This means that seemingly “upstart” brands often have intricate knowledge of the land, which allows them to craft stunning, expressive wines. One such brand, Champagne Frerejean Frères, was founded in 2005 by descendants of the Taittinger family. With a century-long history in the region, its small-production wines are now crafted using the family’s established traditions and knowledge. Similarly, Champagne Pierre Péters has six generations of experience in Mesnil Sur Oger. And while Champagne Agrapart, Anselme Selosse, and Champagne Eric Rodez may all have relatively short histories as winemaking houses, they bring generations of knowledge to the fore.

Champagne grower-producer Pierre Péters has been a family house for six generations

187

LUXURY LIVING DINING u

RARE INVESTMENTS Like the world’s finest wines, artisan champagnes also offer incredible opportunities for investment, often at a value price. Récoltant-Manipulant establishments - even those with significant vineyard holdings—produce minute amounts of champagne in comparison to the large, historic houses that produce millions of bottles per year, and many thousand bottles of their prestige cuvées, such as Dom Pérignon’s La Grande Dame. The smaller houses, however, often produce a few hundred or thousand bottles in total, which means they rarely surface on the secondary market. Tim Tiptree, Master of Wine and Christie’s International Director of Wine & Spirits recommends wine lovers of all stripes explore the region adventurously since the volume of R.M. champagnes has exploded over time. “Buy some mixed cases and discover ones you really like. There are some fantastic growers producing stunning wines.”

Grandes Marques typically produce tens of million of bottles a year, with enough champagne for several million more aging in cellars. Artisan champagnes appear in far smaller batches, making a bottle at auction a rare find.

188 LUXURY LIVING

NEW APPROACHES As more vigernons begin producing their own, terroir-distinctive bottlings from small parcels, Champagne is beginning to mirror other French regions like Bordeaux and Burgundy that are ranked and evaluated by their multidimensional expressions of terroir, rather than by brand names. In fact, this shift is literally visible in how top champagnes are now enjoyed—in traditional white wine glasses rather than flutes. Unlike narrow flutes, designed to show of champagne’s signature bubbles, wide glasses allow the wine’s aromatics and shimmering flavours to be fully evaluated and enjoyed.

topped with sea urchins, a scoop of smoked salmon, a corn and sweet potato soup and eight pieces of nigiri and A5 wagyu beef.

But the scandals didn’t end there, in 2007, she was found guilty of assaulting a former housekeeper and dragged through the media and in 2010 she became embroiled in a well-publicised war crimes trial against former Liberian leader Charles Taylor after she accepted a gift of “blood diamonds” from him which she thought were just “dirty rocks”. BOWMORE® AND ASTON MARTIN UNVEIL FIRST

COLLABORATION

Bowmore® Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky and Aston Martin have unveiled their first collaborative creation; Black Bowmore DB5 1964. A striking concept which brings together an iconic whisky and a legendary car in a bottle of equal parts, featuring exceptional single malt and a genuine Aston Martin DB5 piston.

198 LUXURY LIVING

With only 25 bottles for sale, this exceptionally rare Black Bowmore DB5 1964 is a celebration of time; a defini-

tive moment in history for both Bowmore and Aston Martin. It is also a celebration of shared values and passions; showcasing great innovation and invention.

A beautifully inspiring masterpiece; this unique, handcrafted vessel houses an equally exceptional single malt, Black

Bowmore. Inspired by the past, but truly breath-taking in today’s world. The significance of 1964 is paramount. This represents a truly defining era of evolution for both Bowmore and Aston Martin.

For Bowmore, 1964 is arguably one of the most significant points in the distillery’s 240-year history. The arrival

of a new boiler saw the distillery enter the modern age of distilling as coal fires made way for steam in heating the stills. It was the first distillation from this new boiler that produced the spirit which was to become the iconic Black Bowmore; a sublimely rich and decadent single malt, reflected in awe-inspiring deep darkness.

First distilled on 5 November 1964, over the years Black Bowmore has become one of the rarest and most soughtafter single malt whiskies ever created. This latest release represents only the sixth bottling of this exquisite single

malt. Since 1993, only around six thousand bottles of Black Bowmore have been made available, thus adding to the desirability of this iconic whisky.

For Aston Martin, this was the era of their most iconic car. Launched in 1963 to considerable acclaim, the Aston

Martin DB5 is now widely regarded as ‘the most famous car in the world’, not least by virtue of its links to the world’s most celebrated secret agent in 1964.

199

On its debut the DB5 represented a subtle but important evolution over its immediate predecessor, the DB4 Series 5, not least by virtue of an increase in engine capacity to 4.0-litres. This of course made the DB5 that much more of

a sporting saloon which, combined with its exceptional styling, helped it to become one of the most desirable and admired sports cars of its generation.

In keeping with a commitment to true craftsmanship, the Black Bowmore DB5 bottle itself is handcrafted by

Glasstorm, a bespoke contemporary glass studio, based in North East Scotland. With over 50 years of glass design, sculpting and creative expertise, each bottle took up to one week to be complete, reflecting the continued thread of attention to detail and skill which defines this collaboration.

Black Bowmore DB5 1964 is presented in a handmade presentation box; itself a work of art. Inspired by the dis-

tillery’s coastal home, the deep blue colour and wave embossing evoke a true sense of place. Created from the finest string-grain calfskin, featuring a custom solid brass latch and hinges, plated with nickel, reflective of the DB5.

The partners are set to unveil a series of collaborative projects and products over the coming months and years,

ranging from exceptional experiences to design-led product initiatives with the goal of offering fans of the brands, across a broad spectrum, the opportunities to connect with the partnership.

As world class luxury brands Bowmore and Aston Martin urge consumers never to drink and drive. Drink Smart® messaging will be integrated into all brand activations around the partnership; while the dedicated Drink Smart® platform ensures communication with legal-purchase age adults about making informed, responsible choices. Black Bowmore DB5 1964 will be available from late Autumn 2020 with an RSP of GBP£50,000. For more information visit: www.bowmore.com 200 LUXURY LIVING

ACETAIA DEL CRISTO

DISCOVER THE TASTE OF TRADITION Sometimes the pursuit of perfection teaches us patience. Knowing the laws of nature, we can use natural processes to create culinary masterpieces of the highest quality, like the ancient inhabitants of Modena, who developed techniques to create the perfect balsamic vinegar Today, their passionate inheritors follow these ancient techniques and traditions and this year the renowned manufacturer Acetaia del Cristo has once again been recognized at the world level and became the winner of Luxury Lifestyle Awards in the category of The Best Luxury Balsamic Vinegars in the World. Acetaia del Cristo was founded in 1849, and today this company proudly bears the status of the biggest producer of traditional balsamic vinegar of Modena PDO (Protected Designation of Origin). The story of the famous brand started when Barbieri and Bonfatti families decided to unite their experience and craftsmanship to establish acetaia – the attic where balsamic vinegar is being kept for several years. And now, it is the oldest acetaia in the region of Modena with 2000 casks exclusively used to produce Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PDO. The oldest and most precious barrels in the acetaia date back to 1848. Four generations of the owners’ families have been working on the secrets of the production of PDO balsamic vinegar to bring it to perfection. One of the most striking aspects of the production process is its duration. For example, the time of ageing the Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PDO is at least 12 years, and this is just the first step of the experience. As for the Extra-Old balsamic vinegar, the threshold of over 25 years of ageing gives the delicious taste that is definitely worth waiting for. Acetaia del Cristo offers selections from barrels over 50 years old and others very limited from over one hundred years old barrels. Every year precious numbered collections of 20-30 pieces are sold for €350 per 100ml bottle. Acetaia del Cristo offers guided tours among the long corridors and shelves of hundreds of barrels, casks, and ancient vats in the attics of Acetaia. The unique experience of an inspired sommelier is waiting for everyone in this microcosm of real aromas. For more information visit: www.acetaiadelcristo.it

BRAD PITT LAUNCHES CHAMPAGNE FLEUR DE MIRAVAL

LUXURY LIVING DINING u

This October Fleur De Miraval, the wine house owned by Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and the Perrins family will launch a truly exceptional Rosé Champagne. After five years of research and development the leading man who has been totally committed to creating this Champagne house, which is not some new “celebrity wine,” but an authentic project of wine growers combining their expertise, skills and passion assembled an A-list cast for the new venture with tasting carried out in secret. Pitt is no stranger to producing pink wine as Fleur De Miraval already produced the Miraval Côtes de Provence Rosé back in 2012. Champagne aficionado Rodolphe Péters, owner of the Pierre Péters Maison, which was established back in 1919 and now runs the 50 acre estate, 40 of which is reserved for Grand Cru vineyards mainly around Le Mesnil-sur-Oger in the Côte des Blancs, joined the viticultural ensemble to create the inaugural bottle of bubbly. Inspired by the legend of Countess Fleur de Miraval, who as legend has it drank only Rosé Champagne because she was born in Provence. The blend of Chardonnay grapes of different ages making up 75% while the remaining 25% utilizes young Pinot Noir grapes, which gives the wine its subtle, pink colour, the wine is then aged on lees in the dark cellars in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger for three years before being released. Because Champagne is particularly sensitive to ultraviolet rays and sunlight, which can easily damage the wine, each Fleur de Miraval bottle is lacquered so that the wine is never exposed to light until the day the bottle is opened. “This project is, first and foremost, an artistic venture, because producing fine wines is a form of artistic creation,” explains Famille Perrin”. Only 20,000 bottles of Fleur de Miraval Exclusivement Rosé’s first edition will be released For more information visit: www.fleurdemiraval.com

JUST DRINK IT: WHY WINE INVESTING USUALLY ISN’T WORTH IT Investing in fine wines has become increasingly popular over the past few decades as many in the viticulture industry have promoted fermented grapes as a way to boost returns and diversify a portfolio. The rapid rise in public interest has been accompanied by a growing body of economic literature but the evidence suggests it may not be wise to buy wine as investment instead of for drinking

As you might expect, the wine trade considers its product the ultimate asset. Industry insiders have argued that wine generates above-average returns, helps to diversify an investor’s portfolio (thus lowering its risk) and – if all fails – the owner can still drink it. Zachy’s, a major New York wine retailer and wine auction house, for example, claims that auction prices of top Bordeaux wines have increased 25% to 50% annually in the past few years. And back in 1998, Peter Meltzer of the Wine Spectator, the world’s largest wine magazine, wrote that the wine market outpaced the Dow Jones Industrial Average throughout the 1990s. A would-be investor should know that the majority of wines are not “investment-grade” – a financial term signifying relatively low risk – and will not benefit from being stored for more than two or three years. Experienced wine investors concentrate on only the finest growths from Bordeaux and Burgundy and selected wines from California.

WINE: BARELY BETTER THAN TREASURYS Even among fine wines, the data on investing isn’t favourable. One of the first economic analyses that looked at the rate of return for storing wine over a period of time was conducted in the late 1970s by William Krasker. Drawing on 137 observations of red Bordeaux and California Cabernet Sauvignon from 1973 to 1977, he found that the return for holding such wine was not much better than that of risk-free US Treasury bills – which typically offer the lowest yields in the market. To explain some of that difference it’s worth noting that stocks often yield dividends, while wine only offers capital appreciation. In addition, investing in wine incurs storage and other costs. Elizabeth Jaeger of the University of Virginia, appeared to counter that poor performance with her own study, published in 1981. She reported that a wine portfolio similar to Krasker’s outperformed Treasury bills by 16.6%. This large difference, however, mainly comes down to sampling different periods of time (1969-1977 in Jaeger’s study) and her use of substantially lower annual storage costs than Krasker’s $16.60 a case.

THE ‘BORDEAUX EQUATION’ In a seminal study that focused on a single year, Princeton economist Orley Ashenfelter developed the “Bordeaux equation,” which enabled him to predict the quality of a wine vintage based on winter rainfall and growing-season temperatures in the famous French wine region of that name. He found that the real return on holding a range of Bordeaux wines in 1991 was 2.4%, a pittance compared with a 30% gain in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. A similar study by Gregory Jones and me in 2001 on Bordeaux wines for specific chateaux were significantly below those for common stock. Another study from that year, this one by Benjamin Burton and Joyce Jacobsen, analyzed the semi-annual returns from storing Bordeaux wines from 1986 to 1996, focusing on repeat sales of the same wine and comparing them with various financial assets. They discovered that a portfolio of first growths – a designation considered among the best – returned 6.8% over the period, barely better than the 5.8% gain on Treasury bills but about half that of the Dow Jones benchmark index. Even a portfolio of William Sokolin’s first investment-grade wines didn’t do much better, returning an average of 9.4% at auction. And that’s before including sales commissions, insurance and storage costs, which would make them even worse. Not only does wine generally perform worse than equities, it’s also riskier. The standard deviation – a measure of variation when analyzing a variety of data points – of a wine portfolio consisting of grand cru selections is more than twice as high as that of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Portfolios focused on first growths or the 1961 vintage exhibit an even larger degree of variability between the highs and the lows.

WINE AS A HEDGE While wine may not be a great investment on its own, it can work as a sort of hedge, or way to diversify a portfolio of assets and provide some protection during market downturns. Researchers analyzed Bordeaux auction prices before the financial crisis hit in 2008 and found that the changes in the two assets, wine and equities, bore little or no correlation to one another and moved independently, suggesting wine would be a good way to hedge or offset stock market risks. In fact, Philippe Masset and Jean-Philippe Weisskopf of the Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne studied the profitability of wine investments during the financial crisis, finding that adding them to a portfolio boosted returns – as well as risk. The study didn’t clarify whether this recent positive outlook on wine is a permanent phenomenon or was merely due to a bubble in prices, as suggested by NYU economist Boyan Jovanovic. The latter explanation, though, has proven to be more accurate. Since June 2011, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has jumped more than 50%, while fine wine prices have slumped more than 40%, according to the London International Vintners Exchange Fine Wine 50 Index. So this New Year’s might be a good time to dust off that Bordeaux you’ve been holding onto and enjoy it with your loved ones. Don’t buy another one in order to make money on it. A VODKA WITH

SUPERSTAR QUALITY Entrepreneur, best-selling author and award-winning actress Kate Hudson is taking a stand in the world of ultrapremium spirits with the launch of her King St. Vodka. Unable to find a vodka that suited her palate Kate embarked on a journey of discovery learning all about the process of making vodka and then of course refining her own blend

Inspired by memories of hosting friends at Hudson’s former home on King Street, New York

City, King St. Vodka is a welcome invitation for all to get together over a cocktail, share stories and celebrate life. Hudson wanted to create a spirit for every experience; one that represented

quality and fun, and is perfect for toasting all of life’s most celebratory occasions, or simply en-

joying a cocktail with a good friend. A true labour of love, checked against the highest standards

of quality and taste, King St. is distilled seven times in small batches, is gluten-free and uses

alkaline water, producing a vodka that is insanely smooth and clean. It also makes the perfect martini as well as being the ideal foundation for your favourite vodka cocktail.

“I have always found the spirits industry fas-

cinating, and I love Dirty Vodka Martinis. The creative side of me thought it would be a fun challenge to develop a vodka for my palate, and in a beautiful package that I would

love to have on my bar and share with friends. The businessperson in me is now looking forward to the challenge of building a brand in an entirely new industry, said Hudson.

The idea to create her own vodka blend was spontaneous and came about after

a particularly long day she had decided

to host an impromptu cocktail party for friends and as she prepared to whip up a

batch of dirty vodka martinis she surveyed

her bar and found that of all the vodka blends she had there was not one that she was 100 percent happy with – not one that

she felt appealed to women and after fur-

ther research she was shocked to discover that none of the vodka blends she previ-

ously used were founded by women and so, she decided to change this.

Crafted in Santa Barbara, King St. Vodka

is produced under the watchful eye of Master Distiller, Ian Cutler using GMO-free

corn and alkaline water to produce a gluten free, ultra-premium spirit with a hint of

sweet vanilla flavour. Distilled seven times

and then filtered, King St. delivers a clean, smooth taste with each sip one that can be

enjoyed time and time again but more importantly is women friendly designed to be enjoyed with good company.

King St. is a break from the fast-paced world, distilled to connect with the community you love, celebrate life and make meaningful memories.

King St. is available at select retailers and online at kingstvodka.com

This new collaboration between Aston Martin and EON Productions, the company that produces the James Bond films with Metro Goldwyn Mayer Studios, delivers exciting new 007 editions of the Aston Martin Vantage and DBS Superleggera. No Time To Die will be released around the world in November 2020 and will feature no fewer than four iconic Aston Martin sports cars: the iconic DB5; the classic Aston Martin V8; the brand’s latest super GT, DBS Superleggera; and the exceptional Aston Martin Valhalla – the company’s forthcoming mid-engined hypercar. The two special editions that celebrate the release of No Time To Die, each of which is being offered in limited numbers to buyers around the world, have been carefully designed and crafted by the experts in Aston Martin’s bespoke division: Q by Aston Martin. Aspiring to offer the ultimate in bespoke personalisation services, Q by Aston Martin delivers both carefully curated special editions such as these, as well as the opportunity for individual owners to embark on the creation of utterly individual sports cars via the Q by Aston Martin – Commission service. The first of the two models is the Vantage 007 Edition, inspired by the original Aston Martin V8 which made its 007 debut in The Living Daylights in 1987 and also features in No Time to Die. The movie sees James Bond uncover the car from his personal lock-up in London.

226 LUXURY LIVING

Building on the formidable sporting style and aggressive performance of the regular Vantage, the new car features unique exterior styling treatments led by a bespoke mesh grille with chrome bezel that references the look of the brand’s classic V8. Further styling details include a dashed yellow diffuser inspired by the hazard stripes on the film car’s rockets. The Vantage 007 Edition can even be delivered with a set of The Living Daylights inspired limited edition skis and ski rack – referencing the ‘winterised’ V8 saloon from the film. The car will be delivered in authentic Cumberland Grey exterior paint colour, whilst the interior will be presented in obsidian black leather and dark chrome with 007 branding applied on the centre console of cars equipped with a manual gearbox. The sun visors of all the cars will carry another subtle film reference in the shape of an embroidered radio station frequency – 96.60 (FM) – which 007 buffs will know was the Russian police frequency Bond used to aid his escape in The Living Daylights. The seats themselves feature unique heritage fluting reminiscent of that seen in the V8, along with carbon fibre seat backs and, in a particularly detailed nod to the 1980s film, the outline of cello ‘f holes’ inspired by the memorable cello chase scene featuring James Bond (Timothy Dalton) and Kara Milovy (Maryam D’Abo). The driver can indulge themselves further with a laser-etched gadget plaque that references the various weapons and devices seen on the original film car. These included a rocket motor, missiles, lasers, a targeting display and ski outriggers. Cross hairs etched onto the car’s paddle shift gear levers allude to the missile guidance system seen in the film, too. Available as a manual or automatic, the Vantage 007 Edition also boasts a side strake Vantage badge and is limited to 100 units globally. Aston Martin Vice-President and Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman, said: “Creating a 007 Edition is always an exciting challenge as we work to develop and style a car that embodies the legend of James Bond. It is an honour to apply carefully judged 007-inspired styling to our sports cars, which gives our customers the opportunity to own a unique piece of both cinematic and automotive history.”

227

LUXURY LIVING POWER u

To celebrate the James Bond debut of the range-topping Aston Martin DBS Superleggera, a second unique 007 Edition has been created. Strictly limited to just 25 production cars available worldwide and featuring the same specification as the muscular DBS Superleggera featured in the upcoming film, the car has a suitably menacing road presence. The 715bhp provided by the DBS Superleggera’s 5.2-litre V12 twin-turbocharged engine is befitting of the car’s range-topping status while its torque peak, at 900Nm, is not only substantial in its own right but, as things currently stand, the greatest torque figure for any roadgoing Aston Martin yet produced.

u

To this potent mix, the DBS Superleggera 007 Edition adds a raft of styling and design enhancements that further elevate its appeal. The car sports special Ceramic Grey exterior paint with the roof, mirror caps, splitter, diffuser and rear Aeroblade IITM featured in black tinted carbon fibre. Also unique to the 007 Edition are visually striking Gloss Black diamond-turned Y-Spoke 21” wheels. This special edition also features a 007 fender badge, finished in chrome with a black enamel infill and Stainless Steel Silver 007 foil applied to the rear spoiler blade.

228 LUXURY LIVING

Inside, the cockpit of this DBS Superleggera is a dark, brooding, leather-clad environment with flashes of red detailing the outline of the seats. Subtle 007 branding can be found on the door cards, armrest buckle badge and on the rear sub-woofer cover. The car is finished with a sill plaque that recognises it is one of just 25 DBS Superleggera 007 Editions. The DBS Superleggera 007 Edition with a recommended retail price from RRP ÂŁ279,025 and the Vantage 007 Edition with a recommended retail price from RRP ÂŁ161,000 are on sale separately now. First deliveries will begin in Q1 2021.

NEMESIS ONE

THE WORLD’S FASTEST LUXURY HYDROFOIL SUPERYACHT

Creating a completely new ‘breed’ of superyachts, catering to high performance enthusiasts, who don’t want to compromise on cruising comfort. Nemesis Yachts is the first multihull yacht builder, to offer a level of performance, previously reserved exclusively for striped out racing yachts. Combining: Ultrafast & zero emission cruising, luxurious & modern interiors, with fighter jet style ‘fly-by-wire’ autonomous controls

232 LUXURY LIVING

August 18th marks a turning point in the segment of high performance sailing yachts, when builder Nemesis Yachts debuted with their groundbreaking 332 feet (101 meters) futuristic hydrofoil catamaran design.

The ‘NEMESIS ONE’ will be the World’s Fastest Luxury Foiling Yacht, able to break the 50 knots speed barrier, while flying on computer controlled hydrofoils. Contrary to being a stripped out racing

vessel, the all carbon fibre Nemesis One boasts stunning futuristic, yet comfortable interiors.

The future owner of the world’s fastest sailing yacht doesn’t have to

sacrifice on comfort. Powered by VPLP Design’s patented ‘OCEAN-

WINGS’ wing sail, the high-tech superyacht resembles more of a stealth fighter jet, than a conventional sailing yacht.

The excessive speeds the sailing yacht will be capable of under sail, required the Nemesis team to completely abandoned the classic operating concept of: ‘Pulling lines and handling sails’. To further minimize

crew requirements, they’ve implemented state of the art hydraulic and electric controls throughout the design. Replacing bulky winches in the size of a car’s tire and line cluttered cockpits, commonly conceived when thinking of large sailing yachts.

233

LUXURY LIVING POWER u

u

One of the design’s cornerstones is the fully autonomous VPLP Oceanwings wing

sail, powering the Nemesis One. The wing automatically adjusts it’s angle of attack, camber and twist, eliminating any need for manual sail trimming. Additionally, the reef and furlable wing sail is a staggering 2.6 times more efficient than a conventional sail plan of equal size. But flying on water at speeds in excess of 50 knots, leaving

most performance motor yachts in her wake, won’t come at the expense of security

and comfort. Nemesis One will be equipped with the latest generation of smart Li-

Dar (laser radar) sensors, precisely capturing the yachts surroundings. The current sea state, especially wave height, shape and frequency, will be live monitored by LiDar as well. All gathered data will be processed by the yacht’s mainframe and translated

into precise control commands for the automated hydrofoils and rudders, making the yacht exceptionally stable & safe at any given speed.

The Nemesis One offers the unique option to exchange the port and starboard facing living modules, for ones with different interior configurations. Making it a breeze to transform the interior layout from owner to charter setup for example. To boost her

performance even further, both modules can also be completely removed, transform-

ing the already very fast yacht into ‘Ultra-Light Race Mode’ configuration. Even

without wind, the Nemesis One will remain a zero emission vessel. Powered by a retractable hydrogen-electric propulsion, the yacht has no need for any fossil fuel. In

addition to the hydrogen fuel, up to 750 sqm / 8073 sqft of solar panels, will generate up to 150kW of power, to recharge the yacht’s batteries.

The Nemesis One’s many innovations come with a hefty price tag of approx. $95 million / €80 million

GORDON MURRAY T.50 REWRITING THE SUPERCAR RULE BOOK Gordon Murray Automotive has unveiled its T.50 supercar in full for the first time, showing the finished exterior and interior design and confirming its ground-breaking technical specifications. The T.50 has been engineered to be the purest, lightest, most driver-centric supercar ever

238 LUXURY LIVING

Improving on his acclaimed McLaren F1 “in every conceivable way”, Professor Gordon Murray CBE is leading the team that will begin building customer versions of the 986kg supercar in January 2022. Justifying its £2.36m (before taxes) price tag, the T.50 promises to deliver an unsurpassed driving experience. It is powered by a 100% bespoke 3.9-litre, 663PS V12 engine that revs to a record-breaking 12,100rpm, and features the most advanced and effective aerodynamics ever seen on a road car – aided by a 400mm rear-mounted fan.

239

LUXURY LIVING POWER u

u

The global premiere is the first time the clean lines of the exterior and the driver-focused interior have been seen. From his first ballpoint sketches, to every engineering and design detail, Murray has led the Gordon Murray Automotive team and briefed and overseen suppliers to drive the project forward at an unrelenting pace. Murray’s design for T.50 was the 50th in a prestigious line of race and road cars he’s penned over his illustrious 50-year career – both reasons combining to name the car T.50.

The most dominant characteristics of the T.50 exterior design are its purity and balance, free from the wings, skirts and vents that adorn most modern-day supercars. The clean surfaces are enabled by the most advanced and effective aerodynamics ever seen on a road car, resulting in deliberately simple, beautiful lines and a timeless appearance. The purity of the silhouette is broken dramatically when the pair of dihedral doors rise up and forwards, coming to rest high above the passenger cabin. Inside, the driver-centric approach is plain to see – from the central, jet fighter-like driving position, to the aerospace-grade primary and secondary controls arranged in an ‘ergonomic bubble’ around the driver. Quality of materials, the utmost precision, and simplicity of visuals define the whole car, but nowhere is this more evident than inside the cockpit. British suppliers are responsible for every major component throughout the interior, as well as every facet of the car’s exquisitely-engineered underpinnings – an attribute insisted upon by Murray who was determined the T.50 would be a true British sports car.

240 LUXURY LIVING

241

LUXURY LIVING POWER u

From the record-breaking V12 engine, and best lightweight transmission, to the world-first aerodynamic package and the feather-light titanium throttle pedal, every element is 100% bespoke and crafted by a British company that leads in its field. Murray pushed each supplier to their limits to deliver ingenuity, the highest quality and of course new levels of lightness. With a vision that the car, and every element of its componentry, would be considered ‘engineering art’, Murray set out to create a vehicle that surpassed all others, fostering new levels of pride and connection among owners. Every T.50 customer has the opportunity to meet Murray to discuss their car and personalise it inside and out. Part of this process includes a seat, steering wheel and pedals ‘fitting’ session – personalised to every owner – that will ensure the T.50 is ergonomically perfect and individualised for each discerning customer. Murray: “Just 100 customers will share my vision, a car created to improve on the F1 formula in every conceivable way. With 30 years of technological and systems advancement, now, the time is right to design the greatest analogue driver’s car. I believe no other company could deliver what we will bring to market in 2022, producing this British supercar will be my proudest moment.”

242 LUXURY LIVING

243

LUXURY LIVING POWER u

The T.50 mission – Driving perfection Murray: “From the first touch of the titanium throttle pedal to the V12 screaming at 12,100rpm, the driver experience will surpass any supercar ever built. No other road car can deliver the package of power, instant responsiveness and driver feedback in such a direct and focused way while remaining comfortable, refined and usable every day.” 244 LUXURY LIVING

At the heart of T.50 ethos is the ultimate, sensory-rich driving experience, which all starts with the central driving position. The ‘jet-fighter’ style seating position affords an unhindered view out of the cabin, offering the type of pure driving experience usually associated with a single-seater race car layout. Murray insists that the engine contributes to at least 50% of a great driving experience. With this in mind, Murray set out to create the greatest ever V12. The bespoke Cosworth GMA unit hits the mark as the world’s highest revving, fastest responding, most power dense, and lightest road-going V12. In terms of aural enjoyment, the T.50 raucous 12,100rpm redline will certainly deliver on wow-factor. The car also features Direct Path Induction Sound – a system pioneered on the McLaren F1 and refined on the T.50 to channel the sound of the throttle-induced induction growl into the cabin.

A cold-air ram induction intake sits immediately above the driver’s head, and carefully crafted carbon fibre panels in the roof act as a loudspeaker, amplifying engine sound within the cabin. The system is actuated by throttle angle and not revs, meaning the T.50 is quiet and refined on part throttle, growing louder as the throttle opens. Inside the cabin, all of the T.50’s ergonomically-placed analogue controls are beautifully weighted. From communicative steering, which delivers pinpoint accuracy, to the weighting of the six-speed manual transmission and titanium throttle pedal, the engineering focus has always been on driving perfection. During testing, the manual H-pattern gearchange motion and weighting was honed meticulously. Signedoff personally by Murray, the T.50 provides ‘the ultimate gearchange’ – a tactile short throw with a narrow cross gate for smooth, crisp, satisfying gearchanges. The T.50’s kerb weight of 986kg makes it the lightest supercar of the modern era, lower than the average supercar weight by almost a third. Thanks to the focus on lightweighting, the car offers unparalleled levels of agility, responsiveness and driver focus. The T.50 is a car that is created to be ‘alive’ at normal road speeds, not only when the revs climb past 10,000rpm. It will entertain and engage on low-speed daily trips, as well as when driving on the open road just for the thrill of it. 245

LUXURY LIVING POWER u

246 LUXURY LIVING

With minimal interference from driver aids the driving experience is left to shine – importantly, ESP and traction control, can be disabled entirely. The technologies that do influence performance – for example, the six aero modes enabled through active and interactive fan-assisted aerodynamics – enhance rather than numb the drive experience. The 400mm rear-mounted fan expands the car’s performance capabilities significantly versus an ordinary ground-effect supercar. In partnership with the active rear spoilers and interactive diffusers, the fan helps to increase downforce by 50% (in Braking Mode 100% more downforce is generated); reduce drag by 12.5%; add around 50PS to the car’s output, in combination with ram-air induction; and cut braking distance by 10m from 150mph. Sitting prominently at the rear of the car, the fan is just one example of ‘engineering art’ on the T.50. Another, about which Murray feels passionately, is the engine. Murray detests carbon or plastic engine covers so, upon raising the twin gullwing openings that span the rear half of the car, the Cosworth GMA V12 engine sits proudly on display with its cam covers, primary exhaust manifolds and inlet trumpets all taking centre stage. It is Murray’s pride in perfection that has shaped every facet of the T.50. Calling the exterior styling “a return to beauty” the clean lines and visual balance seek to deliver a timeless design that will help the T.50 age gracefully, a fresh and lasting celebration of motoring engineering – the ultimate analogue supercar. Commenting on the journey so far, Murray said: “For the past 18 months, the T.50 team has lived and breathed the ethos of the car, accomplishing everything we set out to achieve and more. I couldn’t be happier with the car and the team – they’re by far the best I’ve ever worked with.”

Unlike other yacht designs the 328-foot Thor Explore

was designed from the inside and working outwards. The internal spaces directly inform the exterior styling, which encompasses large nautilus windows. Organic

shapes feature throughout the vessel and complement the

prominent double-height windows in the grand saloon on the main deck.

Unlike other double-height spaces, Thor’s design makes the most of the available real estate by incorporating a

floating glass floor supported by exposed structural beams. The result is a light and spacious saloon with superior views out to sea and a central lighting feature that draws the eye in. This upper level is the mission control centre

where an owner and guests can plan their adventures as well as monitor the day’s activities as they unfold.

In the centre of this space is a sunken seating area that floats between the decks. This main focal point of the

deck features a futuristic skylight that sits directly above and carries the same visual language. To bring warmth

and further intrigue to the double-height space, carefully executed lighting design brings the space to life.

When privacy is required, the glass floor can be turned opaque with the flick of a switch to visually separate the top level from the lower half of the main saloon. This area

offers all the amenities and comfort one would expect with the inclusion of a lounge bed, bar and central seating area with additional seating provided to starboard.

Direct access to the beach club is provided via a capti-

Hydrogen is the first and simplest element on the periodic table. Colourless and odorless, it has only a single proton at its centre with one electron around it. While it is the most plentiful element in the universe, hydrogen doesn’t naturally exist by itself. Before it can be used as a fuel, hydrogen has to be broken out of molecules of water, natural gas or other substances which is done by using electricity to split those larger molecules apart. Energy is then released inside the car when the hydrogen combines again with oxygen. One of the main advantages of hydrogen as a clean fuel is that a full tank of hydrogen takes much less time than charging a battery. It only takes three to five minutes to fill the tank on the XP-1 for a 1,000 mile trip as opposed to several hours in an electric car. At present there are only three hydrogen models to on the market: the Honda Clarity, Hyundai Nexo and Toyota’s Mirai and these haven’t really set the automotive world alight however this is primarily because the hydrogen refuelling infrastructure is still in its infancy with very few stations available worldwide. Hyperion claim they will create 300 refuelling station over the coming years.

u

Hyperion already has several operational prototype cars, with a limited run of just 300 cars expected to be delivered to customers by the end 2022. No details of pricing for the car have been revealed, but indicated that prices will vary depending on the level of performance and model extra’s.

This motor yacht project, developed by The Italian Sea Group, started with several collaborative sessions with the contribution of Lamborghini’s Centro Stile and inspiration from the Lamborghini Sián FKP 37: the hybrid super sports car incorporating benchmarking new supercapacitor and materials science technologies that anticipates the future with an unmistakable design and completely customizable colour and details. The challenge of re-interpreting the common DNA traits of both brands has inspired all phases of the project, from the design principles to the definition of technical characteristics ensuring incredible performance, without neglecting the quality of materials and careful attention to detail.

Stefano Domenicali, Chairman and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini said: ”This yacht represents the significance of creating a valuable partnership, at its best: our co-operation allows the essence of both organisations’ style and expertise to be transferred to different worlds, sharing in their diversity to interpret and add value to the final product in a new environment. If I had to imagine a Lamborghini on water, this would be my vision. I’m delighted to celebrate this successful collaboration.” Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 is not just an exercise in style and design; it represents the vanguard in luxury speed boats. Inspired by Lamborghini super sports cars’ performance, the most significant innovative features at the heart of the concept are speed and the dynamism of lightweight engineering. With two MAN V12-2000 hp engines, the motor yacht reaches 60 knots and will be the fastest of the Tecnomar fleet, satisfying the demands of the collector as well as those loving life at sea. The carbon fibre material, typical of Lamborghini super sports cars, puts this motor yacht firmly in the ultra-lightweight boat classification, with its 63 feet length weighing in at just 24 tons.

The exterior design is characterized by a super sportive silhouette, with a cutting-edge but thoroughly nautical appearance. The hull and the superstructure are created from a highperformance shell, developed by naval engineers specializing in hydrodynamic sciences. They interpret the design lines, created by Marcello Gandini in the Miura and the Countach of the 60s and 70s, in a contemporary way. The hard top is inspired by Lamborghini roadsters: providing sun and wind protection while guaranteeing an outstanding aerodynamic performance. The bow lights are an homage to the Lamborghini concept car Terzo Millennio and to the Sián FKP 37, both distinctive for their Y-shaped front lights. The interiors of Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 are the result of high-tech design based on super-performing materials for weight and function, perfectly married with the best Made in Italy heritage. Lamborghini’s iconic clean lines, hexagon shapes, Y-motif and materials are clearly incorporated into the design, together with the fully customizable colours and materials in the manner of Lamborghini’s Ad Personam programme. Clients can choose from extensive exterior colours and livery options, while the interior is offered in two versions choosing from an extensive combination of materials. The motor yacht’s instrument panel interprets the car cockpit in a nautical style, completely integrating all navigation and control systems. As in Lamborghini super sports cars, details are finished in carbon fibre, with Lamborghini’s Carbon Skin™ used in the sports seats and on the helm, styled as the super sports car’s steering wheel. The unmistakable start/stop button, (two, one for each engine) are exactly the same used to start a Lamborghini engine. The first boat will be available at the beginning of 2021.

Luxury Living Magazine offers you this exclusive chance to own a

LE Mans Winning caR? Welcome to the Sarthe Cars and a rebuild of an original icon Today’s high performance car manufacturers often apply motorsport technology to deliver amazing super and hypercars and arguably the zenith of motorsport performance is the Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race. Many manufacturers have launched assaults on this the ultimate motorsport event for over 70 years, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Audi, Peugeot, and Porsche each car tuned to perform in the most demanding environments. Some cars that have competed have become absolute automotive icons such as the Bentley’s 30s, the Fords and Ferrari’s of the 60s, and Porsches of the 70s and 80s.

268 LUXURY LIVING

Provenance has value, and historical provenance value is the Holy Grail for automotive enthusiasts and investors alike. Ex Le Mans racing cars that have competed have become increasingly popular as investments and cars that have actually won are enormously valuable and are usually cosseted in private collections and rarely seen in public, and even less so on the street. So, if you wanted to own an original period Le Mans race car to show off to your peers you will need extremely deep pockets and it will very likely not be street legal. That said, there are a couple of exceptions for street versions and due to some interesting competition entry rules for Le Mans during the 90’s race-cars could be entered in the GT category as long as one street legal example had been created and registered. This allowed micro manufacturers to emerge and one such manufacturer was Dauer Sportwagen, a successful race team in the early 90’s and what they did was to bring the Porsche 962 to the street!

269

LUXURY LIVING POWER u

Every motorsport fan is aware of the Porsche 962 as arguably one of the most recognisable silhouettes and successful race-cars ever especially from its Rothmans livery days with it and its predecessor, the 956, dominating the Group C scene during the 80s and 90s by winning five World Sports car Championships and six Le Mans 24 Hours so this was a perfect candidate for a street version. Dauer launched their 962 LM street version at the Frankfurt Motorshow in 1993 and with factory support from Porsche was entered in the 1994 24 Hours of Le Mans and subsequently went on to win that year. From 1993 to 1995 only seven Dauer 962 LM’s were produced, five reside in the Sultan of Brunei’s private collection, one is registered in Europe and the last one is intriguingly disassembled and unregistered.

So, what if this last car could be resurrected and what would it be like?

To answer this, let us introduce you to Sarthe Cars Ltd., Founder and CEO Ian Howe. At Sarthe Cars we seek to create spiritual successors to iconic cars and to do this we have assembled a team and partners who have worldclass motorsport and automotive skills and talent’. Ian goes on to add ‘The Sarthe Dauer 962 Le Mans rebuild will be a celebration of the most successful racecar in Le Mans racing history’ he adds ‘this is a unique opportunity to bring this very special car back into ownership, but as a truly 21st century version’. ‘This project will combine period heritage and modern contemporary usability in a car that will be evocative for any petrol head and this is what Sarthe Cars intends to do with this unique ‘one off ’ opportunity to own a piece of Le Mans history, for the street…’ ‘I cannot underplay the uniqueness of this proposition, possession of this car will be something special with a matchless combination of historic provenance and a contemporary showpiece.’ ‘Moreover, this will not be a museum piece, this car has to perform on streets but also deliver a tangible investment for ownership and a showcase for the profile of Sarthe Cars.’

LUXURY LIVING POWER u

SO, In TERMS OF PERFORMAnCE, WHAT WILL THIS CAR DO? The heart of the Sarthe Dauer 962 rebuild drivetrain will be a specially tuned Porsche 3.8L flat six Twin Turbo coupled to a seven speed PDK sequential paddleshift also, with extensive experience Sarthe will employ the very latest in lightweight materials and motorsport technologies to make the Sarthe Dauer 962 extremely performance capable, but also safe. ‘A huge part of ownership has to be the driving experience so an owner will have access to the Sarthe Driver Experience Program that includes access to professional driver performance coaches and customers will be invited to special track day events and coaching sessions.’ SO WHAT OF FuTuRE PRODuCTS FOR SARTHE? This car is a one off original, however Sarthe, with access to original tooling and are exploring the possibility to build totally new cars and would do so for customer commissions. Ian says ‘We are also looking into other Le Mans icons to contemporise plus a super focused track-day car based upon LMP1 developments, but any car we build will have the same pedigree of skill and talent that will be employed into the Sarthe Dauer 962 rebuild’. Additionally, the lucky owner of the Sarthe Dauer 962 LM rebuild will, not only have access to the build, but also a direct input into the specification such as colour, interior and other options for this bespoke one off. ‘The 962’s packaging, the details that you don’t see is going to be exceptional and will be delivered by our design partners whose clients include Porsche, Bentley and McLaren.’

u

‘The true motivation for us is to deliver this car back into ownership, but to do it in a way that truly respects the history of this car, but is exquisitely improved to allow an owner to enjoy the experience of ownership and to be part of the rebirth.’

272 LUXURY LIVING

SO, WHO WILL Buy THIS CAR? Ian Howe prefers to consider customers as ‘partners’ and acquisition of the car will be through a private treaty that will set out the specification and desired configuration. ‘This ownership opportunity would suit a partner who is passionate about Le Mans, it’s history and place in motorsport evolution and the 962 was part of a significant era in the sport and someone who sees the value as a unique asset.’ Incidentally, the cost of this car is £750,000 ex taxes and will be ready for delivery seven months from agreement with the owner partner. It seems that this is truly a one off opportunity to own and use a car that will not only be an asset but will be a super exciting driving experience.

The World’s First

Flying nursery

Award winning private jet company, FlyEliteJets has teamed up with award winning interior designer Jenny Allan Design to create the “World’s first, flying nursery”

The design concept was born from FlyEliteJets CEO, Christopher Williams-Martin (himself a dad of 2 boys) to provide a private, safe space for nursing mums to feed their babies and young children to sleep, play and relax onboard private jets. Private jets traditionally cater very well for the business professional but have little if any onboard amenities or facilities for babies and children. With FlyEliteJets clients increasingly using their aircraft for weekends and holidays away with their families Christopher personally sought out a designer who could create a warm, welcoming and inviting space for parents and their kids onboard the ultra-long-range jets and VVIP airliners which frequently fly transcontinental routes.

LUXURY LIVING POWER u

The COVID pandemic has created a surge in demand from owners and charter clients looking to jet away whilst safeguarding their families but even the most up to date jets fail to cater for the youngest of passengers, until now! As every parent will know, flying with babies and children can be a stressful time for parents and kids alike. Having frequently flown with clients and their children and with his own family, Christopher has seen first-hand that babies and young children’s needs are not met often creating a stressful environment for the parents. Clients and their nannies do their best to keep children happy but having a dedicated space that caters specifically for them is a game changer in the industry. The Flying Nursery is designed to go into the aft cabin of jets, an area that is traditionally underutilised. By creating a dedicated space for mums, dads, nannies and children with direct access to the rear WC and baggage hold it becomes an onboard haven for children and parents alike with facilities to eat, sleep, play, relax and refresh. As two of the world’s leading companies in their respective fields, FlyEliteJets and Jenny Allan Design are both International award-winning brands with UHNW client bases so working together to create the world’s first Flying nursery is an ideal launchpad to announce the partnership.

Jenny Allan, Founder of Jenny Allan Design said “We wanted to design something unique that’s never been done before on a private jet and to revolutionise the way clients travel with their children. In this Gulfstream G650 we added a starlit ceiling to create a wonderful sense of atmosphere in the cabin, ideal for bedtime reading. For more fun and whimsical details, we included embossed teddy motives on the seat headrests, a wigwam with cloud cushions that can easily be folded away during take-off and landing as well as a mini rocking horse and shelves for children’s toys and books. It was also really important that the space appealed to mums and dads, so we opted for a calming, tranquil, neutral décor rather than too many bold or bright colours that jar the senses.”

Other design details include a sofa that converts into a double bed, games consoles for older children as well as three TVs. The space was very much designed for the whole family to enjoy. Further aesthetic details include fabric padded bulkheads, and sycamore veneer doors with brass inlays. CEO of FlyEliteJets, Christopher Williams Martin said “I was immediately taken by Jenny’s work which is cosmopolitan yet will have universal appeal with its inviting colour schemes and functional design We needed a designer who could visualise the brief, was approachable and engaging and discreet. Jenny is all of the above and a genuine gifted talent with the accolade of designer of the year.”

The flying nursery really is the height of luxury but for UHNW clients any service that will improve their family’s experiences is top priority. The exciting partnership really holds the sky as the limit as both Jenny and Christopher will go that extra mile for their clients. A typical fit out of this kind can be achieved in less than 2 months in a private hangar, with Christopher and Jenny on hand every step of the way, providing a unique and new offering to private jet design and fit out. Jenny said ‘with our in-house CGI team and design services we can offer clients the full package with jet customisation. The world’s first flying nursery is just the start.’ Images: ©Jenny Allen Design / FlyEliteJets

Grand Black walnut veneer is standard, while a new extensive range of 88 different piano-finished wood veneers is available through Bentley Mulliner Personal Commissioning. Customers can therefore specify a contemporary, colourised veneer finish that can be matched to the interior or exterior of the car. For the new Continental GT Mulliner Convertible, eyecatching chrome details are overlaid into the piano veneer, including a Convertible silhouette in the passenger fascia and a B-motif in the door waistrails. The new Continental GT Mulliner Convertible has been created to appeal to those customers wanting an even greater focus on beautiful details. introduces a bold new Double Diamond front grille, which is further complemented by bespoke Mulliner-branded side vents that continue the unique silver-on-black diamond theme. The new Double Diamond design was inspired by Bentley’s exclusive Diamondin-Diamond interior quilting design concept, which adorns all four seats, the door casings, rear quarters and now for the first time furnishes the tonneau cover. The Diamond-in-Diamond interior quilting was tailored to include contrast stitching in two complementary colours to accentuate the thread against the quilting. It takes almost 400,000 stitches to deliver this quilting across the cabin of the car, with each diamond containing exactly 712 individual stitches – each one precisely aligned to point to the centre of the diamond it creates. Developing the embroidery process to deliver this process alone took 18 months.

SAN LORENZO SX112: THE SEA ON BOARD

The shipyard expands the SX line with a new 34-meter flagship. The challenge continues, developing new contents and habitat scenarios, with external lines by Zuccon International Project and interiors by Piero Lissoni

A pioneer by definition, visionary and determined, San Lorenzo once again looks to the horizon and beyond, shaping a new imaginary to give rise to original habitat solutions.

Hence the new SX112, the flagship of the innovative SX crossover line, the first in the world of

yachting, launched in 2017 by San Lorenzo through the initiative of Massimo Perotti, Executive

Chairman of the company, who thanks to his courage and ability to defy conventions has brought a new type of yacht to the market.

292 LUXURY LIVING

A blend of the classic motor yacht with flying bridge, for which San Lorenzo has been and continues to be

one of the worldwide leaders, and the Explorer type, the SX range is an “intelligent proposal where style, flexibility and functional quality come together in a shared language.

SX112 represents the consolidation of a path that began with the SX88, first, and then the SX76, a challenge that continues and is enhanced by new contents, proposing a new way of living on the sea: the barriers on board are eliminated, and the boat opens to the outside, in a close relationship with the marine context.

LUXURY LIVING POWER u

The orchestration has again been assigned to the creativity of two designers

who have been working with San Lorenzo since the launch of the first

crossover model: Bernardo Zuccon of Studio Zuccon International Project, for the external lines, and Piero Lissoni, art director of the company since 2018, for the interiors.

The focal point of the project is the new stern zone which undoubtedly represents the yacht’s most iconic area, a choice that brings new possibilities

of #design and use by the Architect Luca Santella, who also conceived the innovative SX crossover line. A refinement of the SX88 project, the new

model here propose a spacious internal beach area that is directly connected to the outside, allowing the yacht owner to enjoy these spaces in a novel way, also

thanks to the retractable terraces, maximizing the indoor-outdoor connection. While Zuccon has concentrated on reinforcing the “family feeling” of the

range, bringing out certain linguistic choices such as the balance of the

volumes and the fluid forms that seem to reference large marine mammals, Lissoni has focused on the subdivision of the internal spaces, in constant dialogue with their outdoor counterparts.

In line with the concept developed for the other models, the main deck has been organized as an open space, an innovative solution introduced by San Lorenzo for the first time on the SX88, to maximize the relationship with

outdoor spaces. Thanks to the wheelhouse placed on the flying bridge, freeing

up the bow zone of the living area on the main deck, a single continuous space has been created for the living and dining areas.

Staircases return as a fundamental characteristic of Lissoni’s #design. The

internal helical staircase extends through three levels to connect the decks, and at the height of the main deck it is enclosed in a transparent oval volume like a precious coffer, enhancing the staircase while making it seem to be suspended in the air. The external staircases have an essential, clean look, in keeping with the principles of racing yachts.

LUXURY LIVING POWER u

IS THAT A FLOATING JUMBO JET?

Blending design elements form the sea and sky, the Codesca Jet 2020 yacht looks exactly like a wingless jumbo floating on water! Developed by Italian Shipyards Codecasa, the CODECASA JET 2020 is certainly an

unexpected innovative jump taking inspiration from aviation-inspired design and using them to create this awesome 230-foot superyacht.

The new project, born from Mr Fulvio Codecasa’s insight and hand, breaks the mould of the

typical lines of the maritime tradition. From a stylistic point of view, the CODECASA JET

2020 was inspired by the typical aviation lines, which are transposed in the nautical sector. The

result is something that has never been seen before on the sea. The lines are clean and minimal, the exterior and interior spaces are huge and expansive.

The Yacht forward section, featured by a solid and rounded shape recalling the cockpit of an

aircraft which opens like the bow of a Cargo to give access to the mooring area, is wisely lightened

by the central body, a kind of fuselage with a Sun Deck of a remarkable size (the preliminary project states a total length of approximately 20.00 meters and a width of approximately 10.00

meters). The latter is provided with all comforts and facilities required to live the sea in total relax, such as a recessed swimming pool of 6.00 meters x 2.00 meters with large sunbathing mattresses and a covered Gymnasium.

The Sun Deck extends until the aft section of the Yacht, which develops vertically in a solid

shape, recalling the tail of an aircraft. There, the Beach Club, at the sea level, is served by a lift

and connected to a Hallway and a Skylounge, with large glass windows and 3.00 meters height, accommodating the Salon and the main Dining room, at the Sun Deck level.

The Main Deck bow area is completely devoted to the Owner’s Suite, while the Guests are

accommodated in the four sumptuous Cabins in the Lower Deck, the forward area of which

is taken by the Crew quarters. The pilothouse, then, located on the Bridge Deck is comfortably

served by another lift connecting the three Decks and is directly adjoined, through a corridor, to the Captain’s Cabin.

In a continuous suspension and balance game between the waves and the clouds, the Yacht is

provided with a helipad for a helicopter of medium/large size astern and with a double tender area on the sides amidships, with air inlets recalling a Jet engine. Additionally, she is provided with the newest technical equipment available on the market, such as the radar antennas, which will be installed inside carbon fibre domes, in the typical style of the AWACS airplanes.

From the technical equipment point of view, the new CODECASA JET 2020, which is meant to become the flagship of Codecasa Shipyards, is still being finalized with development scheduled in the later half of the year.

THE ALL NEW MORGAN PLUS 4 MAY LOOK THE SAME BUT IT’S

DEFINITELY DIFFERENT!

With a storied history of over 110 years the Morgan Motor Company is known for its vintage 1930’s good looks - a staple of what the company represents but nothing can remain the same forever or can it?

To the untrained eye the all new Morgan Plus Four looks well the same as the previous model, but it’s what under the surface that counts and this is all new.

308 LUXURY LIVING

Combining seven decades of quintessential Morgan style the all-new Morgan Plus Four represents a revolutionary successor to the Plus 4, a model that has formed the backbone of Morgan’s production since its debut in 1950’s now, 70 years after the first Plus 4 rolled off the production line at Morgan’s Pickersleigh Road factory in Malvern, UK, a new chapter begins thanks to its revolutionary technology and advancement. Based on the bonded aluminium CX-Generation platform, so called because it made its debut in Morgan’s 110th year (2019), the new Plus Four is exponentially more rigid than the outgoing steel ladder chassis, yet astonishingly lightweight at just 97 kg, this advanced platform transforms the car’s ride and handling capabilities, making it truly competitive against its 21st-century competition. However, the famed Morgan driving experience of the model hasn’t been forgotten – its agility, response and balance remain the same and will be instantly familiar to anyone who has driven a Morgan sports car past or present

LUXURY LIVING POWER u

Despite sharing the CX-Generation platform with the Morgan Plus Six, the design of the Plus Four is markedly different. Four-cylinder Morgan cars have always featured a narrower body than the larger-engined models in the range, and the new Plus Four is no exception. Compared to the Plus Six, the Plus Four is 104mm narrower in the central body and 78mm narrower overall, and features uniquely profiled wings. The all-new Plus Four also boasts a number of ‘firsts’ for a CX-Generation Morgan, not least of which is the availability of new 15” wire wheels. The addition of this wheel design, which represents a core part of the company’s design language, required extensive development work, including redesigned wishbones, suspension uprights and braking components. A newly designed alloy wheel style, which references sports cars of the 1960s and 70s as well as Morgan wheel designs of old, is also available. Morgan has built on its long-standing relationship with BMW, choosing to use its 2.0-litre TwinPower Turbo engine. It marks the first time a four-cylinder turbocharged engine has featured in a Morgan car, and produces 255 bhp (190 kW) along with, in the automatic variant, 295 lb ft (400 Nm) of torque. In combination with a dry weight of just 1009 kg, it provides effortless performance: 0-62 mph (0-100 kph) takes just 4.8 seconds; top speed is 149 mph (240 kph). The manual variant develops 258 lb ft (350 Nm) of torque, which combined with a dry weight of 1013 kg, results in a 0-62 mph (100 kph) time of 5.2 seconds. Power and top speed match the automatic model.

While headline power and torque figures remain consistent with BMW applications, the engine mapping has been specifically calibrated to allow optimum driveability and response in the Plus Four. As with the Morgan Plus Six, a sport plus mode is available, engaged using a button on the centre column. It sharpens the throttle response, releasing a whole new dynamic character from the car. Overall, engine output is comparable with the outgoing, steel-chassis Morgan Roadster, however, real-world performance and dynamics have been taken to a completely new level.

LUXURY LIVING POWER u

Traditional Morgan values remain crucial to the production of the all-new Plus Four. Every Morgan sports car is built at the company’s Malvern home, and uses time-proven production methods: a hand-made ash frame, hand-beaten aluminium panels and hand-trimmed leather interior. Craftsmanship is, and continues to be, at the very core of Morgan production, where the ethos of 21st-century coachbuilding is practiced daily. The Plus Four has an extensive standard specification, which includes features new to the model such as automatic LED front and rear lighting, remote central locking and ABS, as well previously optional items such as power steering, a mohair hood, sun visors and door check straps. All-new optional equipment includes puddle lighting and an in-car audio system with Bluetooth connectivity. In total, one trillion combinations of options are available, allowing the individual desires of every customer to be fulfilled.

The all-new Plus Four is available to order now with prices starting from ÂŁ62,995 inc. VAT

312 LUXURY LIVING

For the first time in the model, an automatic gearbox is also available from the factory. The eight-speed automatic features paddle shift, and has already proven to be a perfect match to both the CX-Generation platform and a BMW engine in the acclaimed Plus Six. Moving the gear selector away from you puts the Plus Four into sport mode, which changes shift patterns and response, resulting in a more dynamic driving experience. Ratios can also be chosen manually, using either the gear selector or the steering-column-mounted paddles. The all-new Plus Four also marks the introduction of a manual gearbox for the first time in a CX-Generation platform Morgan. The six-speed gearbox has been optimised to provide a perfectly weighted movement which, combined with its carefully chosen ratios, delivers an engaging driving experience. The gearbox pairs beautifully with the 2.0-litre BMW TwinPower Turbo engine and offers further choice to the customer. While power and torque levels have risen by more than 65% compared to the outgoing Plus 4, the cutting-edge drivetrain technology provides the Plus Four with a similar fuel economy of 40 mpg (7.0 l/100km), and a reduction in CO2 to just 159 g/km for the automatic variant (manual car: 39 mpg (7.3 l/100km); 165 g/km CO2). The lower emissions ratings, representing a 30% decrease versus the outgoing Morgan Roadster, make the car more accessible in overseas markets where taxation is linked to CO2 output.

TO OWN THIS MANSION YOU WILL HAVE TO BE

THE ONE!

It has been seven years in the making and we are still awaiting the final completion but once “The ONE” Bel Air is completed it will become the world’s most expensive home ever with a price tag of $500million

316 LUXURY LIVING

317

LUXURY LIVING PROPERTY u

Created by former movie director Nile Niami and architect Paul McClean “The One” which can only be described as a giga-mansion is situated in the exclusive area of Bel-Air California perched high

above Bel Air on four acres. The 100,000-square-feet mansion provides spectacular 360-degree uninterrupted views of the city below and along with being billed as the “world’s most expensive home in the world” when it also holds the title as one of American’s largest private residences.

With developer Nile Niami and architect Paul McClean just completing the final touches once com-

pleted and released for sale it will feature; a 5,500-square-feet master suite, 18 bedrooms, 30 bathrooms, a 20-car garage, five swimming pools and an additional 3 bedroom guest house with amenities above

and beyond the standard where residents can curl up with a book in the glass-encased library or perfect their bowling game at the home’s private four-lane alley, enjoy a film in the 36-seat movie theatre oh and relax in the jelly fish room.

The last of its kind “The One” Bel Air’s colossal space and size will never again be matched given the recently passed building ordinances which caps home sizes and limits square footage in places like West Hollywood and Beverly Hills thus providing “The One” Bel Air its unique selling point.

The property is currently being represented by The Society Group agency. While it hasn’t been officially placed on the market yet “The One” Bel Air can’t be simplified as a home, no 100,000-square-foot compound can be called a home, but to call it a nightclub or boutique hotel masquerading as a residential property is also an oversimplification, what it is, is a whole luxury lifestyle!

ZAHA HADID’S ONE THOUSAND MUSEUM RESIDENCES HITS OVER $100M THIS YEAR

Sales Success Demonstrates Buyer Confidence in Building and Luxury Market

LUXURY LIVING PROPERTY u

One Thousand Museum, Miami’s newest ultra-luxury condominium by the late Pritzker Prize-win-

ning Zaha Hadid, announces over $100 million in sales year-to-date. The building is defying market conditions and outpacing competitors across the city, and on track for a record-setting year.

South Florida’s housing market has proven to be resilient, with ONE Sotheby’s Q2 Market Report

forecasting sustained interest and activity into the latter half of the year due to pent-up demand and

the migration of homeowners and companies relocating for tax and lifestyle benefits. These factors, coupled with the building’s unique attributes – striking design, privacy and security, single-familysized floorplans and five-star amenities and services – are driving this unprecedented demand.

“We are thrilled that One Thousand Museum’s desirability continues to be recognized across the country,

especially as now, more than ever, people are reevaluating where and how they live,” said Louis Birdman, co-developer of One Thousand Museum. “In addition to the flurry of interest from states impacted by the SALT tax, we’re seeing many of our new residents express priority over elements that only South Florida can offer, such as ocean views and access, ease of living, estate-style condos and competitive pricing.”

This sales milestone is accompanied by the release of the final collection of developer inventory priced

from $4.95 to $20 million. Turn-key homes are currently on the market by leading designers and furnishing houses, including MORADA-Haute Furniture Boutique, Roche Bobois, Artefacto and Luxury Living Group. A duplex residence by BB Italia will come to market this fall.

One Thousand Museum officially debuted August 2019 as one of the country’s most anticipated condominiums, with its striking exoskeleton instrumental to becoming the most iconic and identifiable tower in Downtown Miami. The build-

ing’s luxe lifestyle and exclusive amenities are among its most desirable attractions including a private rooftop helipad, making it Miami’s only residential building accessible via its own private airport. One Thousand Museum is also the first residential building in the world to partner with Forbes Travel Guide to create a hospitality-focused experience for residents and their guests on par with the finest hotel in the world.

Additional amenities include a Sky Lounge for dining and private events; an on-premise bank vault; nearby private Beach Club, Museum Beach; access to a house car service, 1KM wellness center featuring state-of-the-art equipment by

Techno-Gym, a Spa with relaxation pods and private treatment rooms for spa services and the Aquatic Center featuring an indoor lap-pool at the 61st Floor.

ONE Sotheby’s International Realty Development Division is the exclusive listing agency for One Thousand Museum. For additional information or to schedule a virtual or one-on-one tour, please call 855-663-6873 or visit www.1000museum.com.

An entire John Nash-designed terrace in London’s Exclusive Regent’s Park

cOmEs TO maRkET Believed to be the first time an entire Nash terrace has come to the open market, 1-18 York Terrace East in London’s Regent’s Park, a selection of townhouse has been listed for sale with a guide price of £185 million meaning that if a sale is secured it will be become the second-most expensive property ever to be sold in the UK

LUXURY LIVING PROPERTY u

Investment Group Zenprop have instructed joint selling agents Savills and Aylesford who expect the property to be bought by an individual looking to create a private residence in what would be a unique opportunity for an owner occupier to acquire the last remaining full Nash terrace in Regent’s Park.

Part of John Nash’s masterplan for Regent’s Park, the terrace was built by James Burton between 1821 – 1826 and was originally configured as 18 single family houses. After the First World War, the

fashion for larger homes began to change and there was some modification to the building’s footprint. During the Second World War, the building suffered bomb damage and was very nearly demolished. In 1947, following public outcry and a Royal Commission, the decision was made to preserve the building and most of it was requisitioned as government offices and occupied by the Ministry of

Works. In 1967, the terrace was converted to student accommodation by the International Students Trust thus sadly many of the original internal features were lost following a fire in 1969.

u

Current owners, Zenprop, acquired the building from International Student House in 2016. They

then agreed a long leasehold extension with the Crown and took the property through planning with Westminster City Council to restore it to residential use over a period of three years. The Grade 1

Listed 117,000 sq ft building comes with planning permission for the development of two houses and 26 apartments with 42 underground parking spaces. As part of the planning obligations, the owners

are developing 44 affordable housing units in the borough for St Martin in the Fields Almshouse Charity at the site known as Chesterfield Lodge in St John’s Wood.

Derrick Beare, CEO of Zenprop said: “Working on this historic terrace to reinstate its prime residential use, in accordance with the original architectural vision for the park and with the support of the Crown as freeholder, has been a very rewarding experience. It is a unique property which is now fully assembled and we look forward to seeing its magnificent restoration.”

Demand for John Nash properties are is extremely high his architecture is extremely desirable and

people are prepared to pay high prices to purchase his work; as evidenced last year, when US hedge funder Ken Griffin brought 3 Carlton Gardens, a Nash-deisgned townhouse close to the Queen’s London home, for £95 million.

Stephen Lindsay, head of Savills St John’s Wood, commented, “Nothing on this scale in such a prime London location has ever come up for sale. It is an opportunity to create a special and extensive private estate within the tranquil surrounds of Regent’s Park, moments away from Marylebone High Street and the West End.”
