CHEONGGYECHEON bridging the past Ogansugyo Bridge sits between a clash of historic and modern. To the North Dongdaemun Gate represents the historic relevance of the site. To the South Zaha Hadid’s Dongdaemun Design Park (DDP) provides the site with its modern icon. This phenomena presents the site with a separation of identity due to the poor design integration between the old & the new. North Dongdaemun Gate

NODES

The design purpose is to connect the historical with the modern using the existing context as the median. The strategy of reclaiming relevant public space and streets to serve primarily the pedestrian rather than the vehicle was necessary. Sidewalks, seating opportunities, focused views, shading, and most importantly creating an experience will accomplish the goals of the design.

PEDESTRIAN--ORIENTED DESIGN

8 lane streets were transformed into 4 lanes to provide the pedestrian with street priority. Sidewalks will not remain outlines for pedestrian circulation on the city grid, but function as the catalyst that ties the street level adjustments together. The usage of appropriately designed canopies will provide shading for the pedestrian, and will create continuity between the different spaces on site. Site specific gates will serve as an entrance for the pedestrian and frame the next destination as they will help guide the pedestrian through points of interest, as well as emphasizing the intended circulation. Green spaces created will complement its context and include seating, which will tie and relate to the sidewalks, gates, and street design. Water elements will flow North to South perpendicular to stream of Cheonggyecheon. This will unify the site, context, and design and will create a strong cohesive design proposal.

Structured by the newly designed canopy, Ogansugyo Bridge will now filter light to spaces underneath. Allowing the designed sea ng & circulatory spaces to provide the public with the adequate shading and light exposure. Overhang terraces oer the space futher shading, as well as viewports to points of interest. These overhangs also oer structured crossings from either side of the stream and street level.

Grand Staircase

Dongdaemun Gate

The grand staircase oers the site the celebrated entrance that it lacked previously. It also demonstrates the New Urbanism strategy of reclaiming the streets and street priority by slopping down the streetlanes to transform the above landscape to serve the public and not the vehicle. The change of eleva on allowed the grand staircase to reachout through the landscape to solidify the circula on path leading to the stream. The water element created also aids in direc ng circula on, but also helps the entrance relate to Cheong Gye Cheon stream symbolicly and physically as the water will flow slopping down the steps leading to the stream itself. 2 TEMPLE COURTYARD The water element that flows throughout the site acts as the focal circula on regulator that will connect each iden fied street level node together. The water will also guide the pedestrian through the nodes leading them to Cheong Gye Chong stream & the des na on that has been created. Lastly, the element will help define a clear circulatory system for the pedes an.

STREAM GRAND ENTRANCE The exis ng underground access structures did not oer any func onal diversity. From which stemmed the concept of mul purposing these structures through the integra on of public terraces to its design. These terraces would create public interest through the eleva on change that would oer important viewports that will ul mately act as a guide for the pedestrian to the next des na on.

Sea ng opportuni es were one of the major issues iden fied on the selected site. The concept of integraing sea ng with the designed planters would not only resolve the site’s lack of public sea ng opportuni es, but also allow for vegeta on to cover the colossal concrete plaza’s, thus adding spac al quali es and interest to each site.
