• Shirring Elastic by BIRCH • 0.7mtrs of 7mm elastic Trace pattern to the fabric and cut two pieces from Sealife fabric. 32cm 3cm

With right sides together stitch back and front pieces together along one side. Double fold top hemline with 1 cm hem. Press and top stitch leaving approx. 6 cm unstitched on each side. Take an empty bobbin and wind the shirring elastic on by hand, being careful not to stretch it as you wind. Practice on the spare piece of fabric. You might need to adjust tension on your sewing machine. TIP: Use walking foot on the machine and longer stitch length (4 - 4.2mm). You can sew as many rows as you like. The closer the shirred rows the tighter the skirt.

Start at the open side seam approximately 2cm from the top edge. You will top stitch so the elastic thread is on the wrong side of the fabric. Stitch across the skirt with rows 2 - 2.5cm apart. Don’t cut thread at the end of the row, just pull a bit and move your needle to the next row.

SHIRRED SKIRT Steam stitched fabric to gather fabric evenly. Sew open side seam with a French hem to hide all elastics. Insert elastic into top hem and finish stitching along the hemline.

RUFFLES Sew ruffle pieces together to make a loop. Stitch 1cm hem on the ruffle from Deckshair stripe fabric and 2 cm hem on the ruffle from Coastal Flowers fabric. Aling top edges of the ruffles together, set machine to the longest straight stitch and sew a row of stitching 1cm from the edge, going from one side seam to the second side seam. Mark the centre front and centre back of the main skirt body. Mark the centre front and centre back of the ruffle.

Spread ruffles evenly, pin to the bottom of the skirt loop and attach by sewing a straight stitch all the way around. Neaten the edges by overlocking or with zig zag.
