PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Rose Society Members, What a great meeting we had in January. We had over 40 members present with new members attending and some former members returning. It is very exciting to see renewed interest in our society and continued interest in wanting to grow great roses. It is now February and the few sunny days were tempting for us to grab our clippers and head to the garden. It is too early to prune, but about a month from now we will be deep into the process. Now is a good time to take inventory of our garden and decide what we need to do to have the best roses ever. I have to replace one for sure and maybe move some plants to another area. Poor James, he will be asked to dig, dig, and dig. I want to say a special thank you to all the officers and committee chairs that are doing an excellent job this year. For fear of leaving someone out, I dare not list anyone by name but you know who you are and what you are doing. The work is going on behind the scenes, and it is showing up in lots of ways – good programs; good refreshments and fellowship; good CR reports; early planning for the Rose Show; and other projects that are developing. One area we need to emphasize is our Ad Campaign for the Rose Show Bulletin. It would be great if each person could sell one ad or at least one per family. A lot of people just contribute an amount for the ad rather than going out selling. Carl Bruner has volunteered to work on the ads again, but he cannot sell all of them so we are asked to help. You may check last year’s bulletin for the ads that were sold last year, or you may approach a new person or corporation. We will talk about this more at the February meeting. I look forward to seeing you at the next meeting, Monday, February 22, 2010 at 6:30 p.m. in the Hodges Room of the Botanical Gardens. Gloria Purnell President, Birmingham Rose Society

CR REPORT By George Ann Hamilton, Consulting Rosarian

It is time to prepare for our new roses and get our beloved roses ready to strut their stuff for the Rose Show in May. It is very important that we clean up the rose beds and spray with lime sulfur. Line sulfur helps in controlling diseases in the beginning of a new growing season. Get anything out of that rose bed other than what you want growing in it. Our roses have been resting and rejuvenating since October so that with proper cleanup this month we have glorious blooms in the spring. Plan for your pruning in March. Plan for your pest management program. Purchase new and properly dispose of old chemicals. Whatever pest programs you choose just stay consistent. To survive this winter’s harsh conditions our roses needed a cozy retreat to make their plans for the spring. Like us, they do and look their best when they receive proper nutrition and grooming. The February program is all about pruning. Please try to attend for a great demonstration. If we expect a blooming extravaganza come spring, we start now to make it happen.

MINUTES OF THE JANUARY 25TH MEETING Submitted by George Ann Hamilton, Recording Secretary

President Gloria Purnell called the meeting to order. Thirty-three members, three guests and three visitors were present. The hostesses were thanked for our refreshments- Nora Coffee, George Ann Hamilton and Mayre Parr. A special surprise was added to the refreshment table “Pheasant ala Gloria/Carl. Chris VanCleave, program chairman, introduced Steve Hanna from Hanna Gardens. Mr. Hanna introduced his team Shannon and Charity. Their program was introducing the new 2010 roses that they will have for sale at their garden shop. Charity presented a slide show of the variety of new roses. She brought three roses to give away to lucky winners- April in Paris, Joseph’s Coat and Feisty. Her three handouts included a list of new roses for 2010, fertilizing products and pest management products. Treasurer Frank Baier, reported that as of January 25th, 2010 the checking account balance is $6,860.69 and the CD balance is $4,783.44. It was announced that on April 30th, 2010 there will be a tour of the Dunn Rose Garden and they have requested rosarians to be on hand to answer any questions the tour group might need answered. This would require thirty to sixty minutes of your time. Glorious Garden Tours will take place the same day of the Rose Show May 8th and 9th. Rosarians will be needed for this tour group also. Hostesses for our February meeting will be Joyce Benjamin, Ann Jones and Chris VanCleave. Dean Hodge gave a report on the Deep South District Mid-Winter Meeting held January 15, 16 and 17th in Lake City, Florida. Bronze Medal winners were honored, Glenn Hodge from our Society and James Calloway from the Mobile Society and now a member of our society. So we can boast of two Bronze Medal Winner members. Also we were told that our Birmingham Rose Show was the very best for Arrangements. Everyone is encouraged to become a member of the American Rose Society. They are running a four-month special for only $10.00. The annual handbook for selecting roses is worth its weight alone. The meeting was adjourned.

ANNUAL PRUNING

by Chris VanCleave

Pruning is an essential part of growing and showing roses. Join your fellow members on Saturday March 6th from 8 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. in the Dunn Formal Rose Garden for our annual pruning event. This event not only benefits the Botanical Gardens, it’s an opportunity for us to teach others proper pruning techniques. Bring your pruners & loppers! We are encouraging the public to participate and will need “all hands on deck”

ROSE RECOMMENDATIONS by Chris VanCleave

As a public service, I would like to begin a list of roses that have performed in our gardens. We will categorize these two ways: Exhibition Roses and Garden Roses. This list will be published on our website and will provide the public with good information on what grows well in our “neck of the woods”. Any additional information about the rose you submit would also be helpful. Please send your recommendations via e-mail to: Webmaster@BirminghamRose.org or by U.S. mail at: 219 Chadwick Lane, Helena, AL 35080. I look forward to hearing from all of you soon!
