President’s Message

And so ye faithful, there is no shadow to see An early Spring for you and me. – Punxsutawney Phil, 2013

The faithful ground hog has made his annual prediction and an early spring is at hand, right? I’m not so sure we can always depend on the predictions of a ground hog, but I do know that it will soon be pruning weather in Alabama. The annual pruning of the Dunn Formal Rose Garden is scheduled for Saturday March 2nd from 8 am until 12 noon. Bring your pruners and a friend! We had a “remarkable” meeting in January with Dr. Tina Jennings & Jeri Sink from Remarkable Roses with their wonderful collection of Griffith

Planning for the 61st annual Birmingham Rose Show has begun. We need all hands on deck to make the show a success. In the coming weeks, working teams will be forming and we will be reaching out to members to help. Ad Sales and Award donations are always an area of need. If you sold an ad last year, please contact your advertisers and ask them to participate again. Donations of vases and crystal items are always welcome as we begin to assemble the awards for the show. Hyacinth Prince, who always does an outstanding job with awards, will serve as awards chairman again this year. Please contact Hyacinth if you have a donation. Christopher R. VanCleave

Annual “Head Over Heels” Pruning Event

Birmingham Botanical Gardens One of the crown jewels in the city of Birmingham is the Dunn Formal Rose Garden at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. It is a showcase of magnificent roses and serves as the centerpiece to our botanical garden. As visitors come and go, our society plays an important role by helping to maintain the garden year round and by facilitating an annual pruning event at the gardens. This serves a twofold purpose. 1. It helps to maintain the garden for visitors to come and experience the beauty of our national floral emblem – the rose. 2. It is an opportunity for our society to educate the public on proper pruning techniques and general rose knowledge.

Consulting Rosarian Report By Harold Settle February 2013 I traditionally enjoy the months of January and February in the rose garden because I generally have a brief period of rest from the ritual of spraying, deadheading, and general garden care. However, there are important things to do this time of the year: (1) I severely prune some of my old garden shrub roses. I prune about one-third of my shrubs each winter to keep them under control and to remove all dead wood. (2) I cut back my Hybrid Teas and Floribunda’s to about 3-5 foot in height in order to avoid ice, snow, wind damage during the winter months. (3) I plan which current garden roses will be dug up and disposed of. This year that total will be about 5 bushes. I try to give a rose at least 3 years in the garden to see if it will be productive but, if after that period of time it’s not, I get rid of it. (4) I order any new roses and order my spray chemicals this time of year, getting ready for the spring season.

(5) I am planning my pruning schedule which will begin Wednesday, February 27 and the weekend of March 1-3. The pruning schedule will continue through March 15, 16 and 17; a total of 3 weekends in preparation for the rose show May 11. (6) I will begin my spray schedule probably the weekend of February 23-24. (7) I will start to fertilize the first weekend in April. (8) I will spread about 100 bales of pine straw on rose beds as I complete my pruning and as I spread the pine straw, I remove or spray all weeds in the garden with Round-Up. And that’s what I will be doing this “slow” time of the year!
