May 2012 President’s Message I want to begin this month’s column by expressing my thanks and appreciation to all those who participated in the 2012 Birmingham Rose Show.

We have a great garden tour lined up this month. Be sure and check out the details elsewhere in this publication. See You In The Garden, Christopher R. VanCleave

President, Birmingham Rose Society Despite challenges in our gardens, the show tables were lined with blooms, arrangements and photographs serving as a showcase of the beautiful roses that are grown in the southeast. If I named names I would leave someone out, so I will just extend an extra special THANK YOU to all who contributed your time and efforts to make this show a success. Our very first seminar was held on Saturday during the rose show and we had 33 in attendance. Some great information was shared and I look forward to seeing more in the way of educational programs as our society and rose shows continue to expand and grow in the years ahead.

Gloria Purnell shares during our “Growing Roses In Alabama” Seminar

We had several first time exhibitors this year, several of whom had blooms on the awards table. I hope each of you is proud of your horticultural achievements. Let us be a society that reaches out to the community and encourages people to grow more roses!

Consulting Rosarian Report – By Dean Hodge Tax returns in the mail, and a sigh of relief, but no, the rose gardener’s work has just begun. I do hope that all of you are well on your way with a spray program, for if not, then you are behind the eight ball. Glenn’s spray program is as follows: Alternating every other week Banner Max & Manzate & the opposite week with Compass & Manzate. We bit the bullet (because price wise) and are trying Conserve in order to control Thrip. If you let the black spot get ahead of you, spray pure Manzate several times in a row, it will kill the spores on contact. Ideally, you do not want black spot, so you must be persistent in a preventative such as Banner Max or Honor Guard so as not to have to deal with black spot on that beautiful bloom that you want to enter in the show. We have fertilized twice and will do again two weeks before the show. We water as needed, and that has been only a couple of times. They would like two to three inches of water a week. Our roses are all in bloom, and the yard is so pretty with the Irises, Amaryllis, Lamps Ears, Ferns, & such. Next, I would like to encourage those of you that have never entered an arrangement in the rose show, please consider doing so in the future. Mary and I will be glad to help you get started. The month of April was my month to teach flower arranging at our church, and I will post the months arrangement on my Facebook page for those that would like to view. See you in the garden.

The Botanical Gardens make approximately $256,000 before expenses on the event. For the Rose Society we netted approximately $4,100. There were two roses left over. Lavonne Glover and Jennifer Phillips were the lucky winners with a rose apiece for the door prizes for the evening. The program for the evening: Preparing your roses for the Rose Show Presented by Robert Eskew and Harold Settle Mr. Eskew suggested the Handbook from the ARS so that you have the proper name on your entry tags. When you cut your roses make sure you label them so you won’t forget. Then he discussed what can get your rose disqualified. He had a variety of roses from his own garden for demonstration. Dr. Settle, with roses from his own garden demonstrated grooming techniques and the rules regarding foliage, stem on stem, etc. Grooming starts in the garden: Keeping the rose garden clean, proper pruning and having a spray program in place and to follow it faithfully... Time was allotted for questions and answers. The Meeting was adjourned at 7:54PM Respectfully submitted, George Ann Hamilton, Recording Secretary
