May 2013 President’s Message The first blooms of spring have arrived and boy was I glad to see them! Even though our hybrid teas did not arrive in time for me to win Queen of Show this year, (ha) my spirits are always lifted to see the blooms arrive in the garden. As this year‟s Rose Show chairman I want to thank all committee members, volunteers and society members who helped to make this event happen. We saw big crowds in the gardens and at the show. It was a rousing success. My congratulations to Harold & Virna Settle on winning Queen of Show with a beautiful bloom of Lynn Anderson. A full listing of show winners accompanies this newsletter. If you have not taken a moment to thank our sponsors and advertisers for supporting the rose show, please go through your show book and give them a call and thank them for their support. Thanks to Bob Eskew for hosting a “Get in the Garden” walk on Mother‟s Day in the Dunn Formal Rose garden. It was a fun and informative walk. The rose garden dedication ceremony honoring the 50 year commemoration of the Civil Rights movement in Birmingham was a success. Mayor William A. Bell praised the Birmingham Rose Society for taking a leadership role in the community with the planting of these beautiful
roses. „Coretta Scott King‟ roses will now welcome visitors and will serve as a reminder of the work left to be done for the cause of freedom. To learn more about the commemoration visit http://www.50YearsForward.org Our May meeting & garden tour will be held in our little garden. Tina and I are excited to welcome you to our home. Details and directions are found elsewhere in this publication. Per our bylaws; at the May meeting I will announce my selection for nominating committee chairman and we will elect two additional nominating committee members who will bring officer nominations at the June meeting. We will then vote on the nominations and our new officers will take office on the day following the June meeting.
