I

extend my thanks to everyone who has gone above and beyond the call of duty to help Bishop Kenny High School navigate the challenges presented by the COVID-19 crisis. Our parents and students, while at times rattled by the challenges of online learning, canceled athletic and extra-curricular activities, and the doubts that surrounded our plans for graduation, have been supportive and understanding. The faculty and staff have displayed great dedication and professionalism; utilizing their skills to ensure that learning remains priority #1 even during a pandemic. And, finally, our maintenance and housekeeping departments exemplified the ideals of dedication and loyalty that any organization would envy. Our team makes me proud everyday. I assure you that our plan for the safest possible operation during the 2020-2021 school year has been well-developed over the past months. No doubt it will be subject to periodic revision as new recommendations and directives come from Diocesan leadership, the CDC, as well as the Governor’s and Mayor’s offices. Many hours of planning, along with great capital investment in the purchase of the very best safety and hygiene equipment available, all point to a safe and healthy school for our students. Also of great importance is a new initiative, a Task Force on Diversity, to help address issues of race and equality within our school community. Led by Chairman Latasha Garrison, Esq., BK Class of 1990, the makeup of the task force includes clergy, faculty, students, parents, and alumni – all of whom bring great diversity of background, education, and experience to the table. What they share in common is a commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of our students. I look forward to reporting the progress of the task force in the coming months. You can visit our website, www.bishopkenny.org to read more about this important undertaking and those who have volunteered to serve. Click on About at the top of the website and then BKHS Task Force on Diversity to read more. Finally, I thank all of the generous donors who continue their annual support of our school. I am happy to report that we ended the fiscal year on June 30 with record setting support of the Fund for BKHS (see page 6 for more information). The BK Boosters also report that the 34th annual auction, which was at first postponed and later canceled, recorded a net profit of $118,000 after it was decided to try it as an online program! Thank you to everyone who supported these important appeals. As we begin the 2020-2021 school year I pray for God’s blessings on you and your family. Sincerely,

On the Cover A BK First! The Bishop Kenny High School Class of 2020 is the first class to graduate from the football field. After weeks of meetings that included discussions about a virtual graduation, a drive-up graduation, and even alternate locations, the stadium was selected. Nearly three hundred socially-distanced pods, each containing three chairs – one each for a graduate and two parents – were set up at William Johnston Stadium to welcome and celebrate the BK Class of 2020. COVID-19 wasn’t able to stop BK’s 68-year tradition of in-person graduations.

Congratulations to the Class of 2020!

Strategic Plan Update In September of 2019 a committee of administrators who worked to formulate the 5-Year Strategic Plan for Bishop Kenny High School reconvened to assess the progress that has been made on the plan. Completion and closure of the Strategic Plan is slated for 2022 with a view towards the 70th anniversary of BK in the fall of 2022. The purpose of the Strategic Plan remains the same – to position Bishop Kenny High School to successfully meet the needs of current and future generations of students. The update reveals highlights of the progress that has been made on this exciting vision for the future of our school. The complete update is available on the BK website at www.bishopkenny.org. Once on the website click on About and then Strategic Plan.

Signs, Signs, Everywhere a sign....

Campus Improvements

The shutdown caused by COVID-19 triggered an early start of work on this year’s list of summer improvements. Students returned to school and found the campus refreshed for the 2020-21 school year. • Removed lockers in 100 building in preparation for renovations in 2021 • Roofs were replaced on the gymnasium, the kitchen, and walkway canopies • Softball concession stand and restroom were renovated • Silent alarms were installed • Practice tables and computers for E-Sports were installed • Computer Lab 204 was renovated – complete with all new computers • Main Office underwent a renovation • 200 building lobby and hallways were painted, re-carpeted, and refreshed • 15 hydration stations were added throughout campus

The Main Office and hallways throughout the 200 building were updated and refreshed during the early shutdown and over the summer. A long list of structural and cosmetic improvements were checked off the to-do list in anticipation of returning students.

• A new outdoor covered picnic table area was added outside of the Carla Harris Performing Arts Center to accommodate additional social distancing for student lunch periods and future use for student and alumni events.

Armor Up Crusaders! All doorways and hallways throughout campus have signage reminding students and faculty that facemasks are required on campus.

COVID-19 Update In preparation for our recent return to school, and in addition to summer renovations that were planned before the spring shutdown, getting our campus ready for the safe return of students and teachers became priority #1 for BK’s Administrators and staff over the summer. Bishop Kenny continues to work closely with the Office of Educational Services at the Diocese of St. Augustine, and in compliance with CDC regulations, to operate the safest possible school for our 1260 students and their families. The following are some of the changes that Bishop Kenny High School has instituted to slow the spread of COVID-19.

4 All students and staff members must wear a face mask that covers the nose and mouth at all times except when consuming meals or participating in physical exercise.

4 A plexiglass instructional barrier for the teacher has been added to every classroom and plexiglass partitions have been inserted between student computers in lab spaces.

4 Classroom desks have been spaced as best as possible with a conscientious effort to limit class sizes to ensure maximum spacing.

4 Each classroom is equipped with sanitizing equipment for use by teachers and students.

4 Additional covered outdoor seating areas have been added to allow for more social distancing and to encourage students to go outside during lunch.

4 Sanitizing routines have been established for daytime cleaning and the complete cleaning of classrooms and common areas with Bioesque electrostatic sprayers each evening.

4

4 A contact-free hall pass system has been adopted. In addition to eliminating a pass that is shared by multiple students throughout the day, the e-hallpass program limits the number of students checking out of class at the same time, to use the same restrooms, in a particular area of campus.

4 Students and drivers on all BK bus routes must wear masks at all times. Students are temperature scanned before boarding the bus each morning.

4 Buses are deep-cleaned and sanitized after the AM route and surfaces are sanitized by drivers after the PM route. Hand sanitizer is located on each bus near the passenger entry doors. All buses have dual air systems and filters that are sanitized routinely. In addition to these changes a series of protocols have been developed that will address student and faculty exposure to the virus, positive test results, illness in families, and a myriad of other ‘what if’ circumstances that will undoubtedly present themselves in the coming months. We thank our parent community for their ongoing support, confidence, and prayers as we navigate through this unprecedented health crisis.

BK Boosters Golf Tournament Moves to The 21st Annual BK Boosters Golf Tournament will have a new look this year. Due to the ongoing concerns caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic, the tournament will be held at Topgolf on November 16, 2020. The format includes two different games. One will appeal to competitive golfers and the other to a more recreational player. There will be lots of fun, food, prizes, 50/50 raffle, an opportunity to win $10,000 at the Hole-In-One and, of course, plenty of spirited competition. Please join us in supporting this important tradition! If you would like to register online, the form is easily accessible on the BK website.

21st Annual GOLF TOURNAMENT Monday, November 16, 2020 1:00 - 5:00 pm Competitive and Recreational Golfers Welcome Our two-game tournament format guarantees a great day for everyone. All players will be required to follow current CDC mask guidlines.

THE FUND Named BK Scholarships

The following pages detail the results of the 2019-2020 Fund for Bishop Kenny High School. Designed to expand annual giving beyond a financial assistance-only appeal, the Fund for BKHS welcomes and encourages generosity on behalf of other projects, improvements, initiatives of all kinds and, of course, individual scholarships. The generosity of our donors, even after the COVID-19 shutdown began has been remarkable. Over the past two years we have asked many of our parents, alumni, and friends for specific and even increased gift amounts. The response to our refreshed appeal has been one of great generosity. This year we have broken a record with the total of unrestricted gifts reaching $312,714 and restricted gifts totaling $228,506. The combined response to the traditional mailing and phone calling, online giving, Day of Giving, and follow-up appeals resulted in a combined total of $541, 221! We thank all of our donors whose gifts make such a big difference in the lives of our students. We look forward to another successful year of Annual Giving to BKHS during the 2020-21 school year. Please know that the intentions of our benefactors are remembered at daily Mass in the Bishop Paul F. Tanner Chapel.

The Fund for BKHS 2020-21 The Fund for BKHS materials will be arriving soon. Your gifts, large and small, make a difference in the lives of our students. Please give generously this year as requests for financial assistance have increased. Many of our families have been impacted by job loss or job reduction. Please help us keep these deserving students enrolled at Bishop Kenny High School.

(L-R) Ms. Meri Bloom ’82 and Miss Mang Len '22 Mang was the 2019-2020 recipient of the inaugural Angie Bloom Memorial Scholarship at Bishop Kenny High School. Mang was chosen based on her excellent record of community service while a student at Bishop Kenny High School. The scholarship has been established by Bishop Kenny graduate Meri Bloom ’82, in memory and honor of her mother Mrs. Angie Obi Bloom. Mrs. Bloom was a devoted Catholic woman who was a dedicated and generous volunteer. We thank Meri for her generosity and congratulate Mang for this honor.

Mrs. Lien Bui paid a visit to Bishop Kenny last fall to deliver a generous gift to the Fund for BKHS donated by her children, David Bui ’91, Dr. Alexander Bui ’92, and Dr. Vy Bui ’93 in memory of their father Anh Kim Bui, and also in honor of former BK President Rev. Michael R. Houle, and past Principal, Sr. Thomas Joseph McGoldrick, SSJ. Mr. Orlando was pleased to accept this very generous gift given to assist the families of financially struggling students.

This year we were fortunate to honor two men, each of whom has made a significant impact on Bishop Kenny High School. Dave Williams and Bob West were successful and highly regarded teachers, coaches and administrators during their careers at BK. It was our honor to dedicate the following facilities in their names:

Dave Williams Beach Volleyball Courts – November 9, 2019 Bob West Baseball Stadium- March 7, 2020 Past President Father Michael Houle was on hand to bless both facilities. Separate fundraising was undertaken to help off-set the cost of each of these projects. The results of these efforts are reflected as part of this year’s restricted gifts total for The Fund for BKHS. AUCTION REPORT Auction 2020 Raises $118,000 The 34th annual BK Boosters Auction, originally scheduled for Saturday, March 28, was canceled due to COVID-19. The response from our donors when we offered to refund their money was remarkable – no refunds were requested. Thank you all for your exceptional generosity. Fortunately, all of the items that had been donated to the auction had been entered into an online bidding system making our eventual decision to launch the BK Boosters first-ever online auction quite simple. Items were released for bid on Thursday, May 28 and the shopping continued

until 11:00 PM on Saturday, May 30th. Parents, alumni, and friends of BK jumped in enthusiastically, placing bids on nearly 400 items. When the final bids were tallied, the net profit was an astounding $118,000. We are grateful for the generosity of our sponsors and for the kind people who prepaid for reservations and told us to keep the money rather than accept a refund. We thank all of the individuals and businesses who donated such a wide array of items to sell. Finally, we thank all of the

online bidders who participated in Auction 2020.

Alumni Family supports BK Auction! After the BK Boosters Auction went live online, Diane Koch, mother of five BK graduates, reached out to ask if we still had a student of the month parking spot on campus. Diane had been looking at the items online and had her eye on one of the reserved parking spaces that were up for bid. She wanted to donate it back to BK for the (Front: L-R) Mike Koch ‘09, Mrs. John (Diane) Koch, Sarah Koch ’11, Mrs. Student of the Month to use. Why? Because Christopher (Cari) Koch; (Back: L-R) Elizabeth Koch Bruno ‘04, Jonathan her eldest son Chris, who had a tough time Koch ‘11, John Koch, Christopher Koch ‘00 adjusting to BK after being moved to Jacksonville from a Benedictine high school in Nebraska, had been given a Student of the Month parking pass for having demonstrated outstanding school spirit at a football game. In Diane’s words, “It really made a difference in making this transfer student feel like a part of the BK community.” After revisiting that memory together, Diane and son Chris agreed that purchasing a parking pass and continuing the “Student of the Month” award might encourage another student to develop leadership qualities, and promote positive school spirit. Thanks to the Koch family for this wonderful gift to BK’s Students of the Month for the 2020-21 school year.

Bishop Kenny High School and the BK Boosters have decided that, in the interest of everyone’s safety, the 35th Annual BK Boosters Auction will be an online event again this year. This decision has been made due to the ongoing concerns related to COVID-19. The date will be announced soon.

Approximately 30 members of the extended Parliment family enjoyed a cruise on the Amelia River to Cumberland Island and the surrounding area over the summer. The tour was generously provided by longtime BK Auction donors and former BK parents Kevin and Cecelia McCarthy, owners of Amelia River Cruises. Our thanks is extended to Chuck Parliment ’69 who purchased the cruise from the BK Boosters Online Auction in May. Thank you, Chuck, for your continued generous support of the auction!

In a typical year the BK Boosters satisfy requests including, but not limited to, team uniforms, transportation for teams traveling to post-season competition, specialized computer and technology needs, entry fees for academic and club competitions, state-championship rings, as well as anything that benefits students participating in school-sanctioned activities.

CLASS OF 2020 68th Graduating Class of BKHS

I

n the weeks leading up to graduation 2020 there was much concern and uncertainty surrounding what the plan for BK’s 68th commencement exercises might look like. UNF, the site of BK’s graduations since 1996, informed Principal Orlando in March that their arena would not be available due to the COVID-19. It was also doubtful that any other venue would be able to accommodate BK within the guidelines of appropriate and safe social distancing. The question soon became, would there be a graduation ceremony at all? It turns out that the perfect answer was right in our own backyard. Saturday morning, May 23, 2020 at William H. Johnston Stadium was bright and beautiful – the perfect day for BK’s first-ever waterfront graduation. Each of the graduates, dressed in cap and gown, was seated with their parents on the football field exactly six feet apart from the next family. 2020 was featured on the scoreboard and on the press box; it was painted onthe field and prominently displayed at the base of the St. Joseph’s Church offered enough space for BK’s first-ever speaker’s platform. Principal Todd Orlando was joined students-only, socially-distanced Graduation Mass. Held on stage by past BK President Father Michael Houle on May 22, it was also the first time the entire class gath‘71, Diocesan Superintendent of Schools Deacon Scott ered together since school was shut down on March12! Conway, commencement speaker Sheriff Mike Williams ’86, School Board Chairman Anthony Parete ’80, and VicePrincipals Mary DeSalvo and Vincent Saladino ‘95.

Father Michael Houle, past President of BK, was the celebrant at the graduation Mass for the Class of 2020. The Mass was subject to the same social distancing challenges as graduation. The students and faculty-only Mass was held at St. Joseph’s Church in Mandarin. Father was joined on the altar by fellow BK graduates, Deacon Mac Hill ’10 and Deacon Clay Ludwig ‘11. Note: Deacon Clay Ludwig was ordained in June and is now Rev. Clay Ludwig.

Mr. Orlando welcomed the graduates and their families and introduced Diocesan Superintendent of Schools Deacon Scott Conway who said an opening prayer and delivered a brief address. Salutatorian Gabriella Hitti welcomed the assembled guests on behalf of the Class of 2020 and Kathleen Yarborough delivered the valedictory speech. Sheriff Mike Williams, a member of the Class of 1986, delivered this year’s commencement address sharing his thoughts about his years at BK and the life lessons he carries more than 30 years later.

During the distribution of diplomas, and to the surprise and delight of everyone in attendance, a plane trailing an aerial banner congratulating student Jack Wilkinson and the BK Class of 2020 made several passes over the stadium!

To achieve the social distancing requirement each graduate and their parents were situated together with 6 feet of distance between them and next family’s 3 chairs.

Our thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Wilkinson for the graduation day flyover!

Graduation Speaker Sheriff Mike Williams ‘86 While the world around us may change a bit, our routines impacted, special moments postponed or lost…we must not lose sight of all we have to be thankful for. Family, friends, and accomplishments like today’s, are just a few of those things”

Senior Awards 2020 The annual Senior Awards program, always a highlight of graduation week activities, was pre-recorded and livestreamed so that students, parents, grandparents and friends could watch the ceremony from the comfort and safety of their homes. Principal Todd Orlando and VicePrincipal of Academics, Mrs. Mary DeSalvo along with other administrators and faculty members appeared in the video. In addition to the presentation of scholarships, academic and service awards, several memorial awards presented in tribute to people who, each in their own way left a mark on our school were announced. Dailey Jackson, President of the 2019-2020 Student Government, wrote and said the opening prayer at the Senior Awards Ceremony which was filmed and broadcast via YouTube. This photo was taken at Graduation Mass.

As one of her many duties, senior Dailey Jackson, President of the 2019-2020 Student Government, said the opening prayer as part of BK’s virtual Senior Awards program in May. Mr. Scott Sberna, faculty advisor to the student government, introduced Dailey with these comments and an award for her service, “Dailey, your commitment to your school and to your senior class has been extraordinary. On behalf of the administration, faculty, and student body of Bishop Kenny high school, I want to commend and thank you for all of the time and effort you put forth as Student Government President for the Class of 2020.” Dear Lord, Thank you for blessing the Class of 2020 with the past four years of high school where, under the guidance of Bishop Kenny’s faculty and staff, we have learned and grown together, both academically and in our faith lives. Please continue to watch over all of the students and their families as they transition to a new stage of life. Help them remember to always trust in You and rely on their families, no matter where they are. Thank you for granting all of these scholars the skills to succeed and may You watch over them always. Amen

AROUND CAMPUS Mary Awards 2020 Caroline Giddens ‘20 is this year’s recipient of the Ascension St. Vincent’s Foundation Mary Award in the Philanthropy/Volunteerism category. The Mary Awards honor exceptional young high school senior women in the Jacksonville community. Caroline earned over 450 community service hours volunteering with Camp I Am Special. She received a $1,000 cash award and will be invited to the 2021 Mary Awards event. Caroline expressed her love for volunteering this way, “After my first day with my camper at Catholic Charities Camp I Am Special, I realized that camp was going to be my second home.” She continued, “at camp I find that I experience a happiness unlike anything I have ever experienced before, which is the overwhelming feeling that comes from doing what God created me to do.” This prestigious award recognizes young women who serve as positive role models for young people. By demonstrating positive values, lifestyle, and leadership they lift our society up. The Ascension St. Vincent’s Foundation has long been an advocate for women of all ages and their important role in the fabric of our society as civic, volunteer, family and business leaders.

Caroline Giddens ’20 Recipient of the Ascension St. Vincent’s Foundation Mary Award for Philanthropy 2020

The awards seek to empower young women while supporting Ascension St. Vincent’s in its core values of Service to the Poor, Reverence, Integrity, Wisdom, Creativity, and Dedication. Caroline was very involved at Bishop Kenny with the Anchor and Interact Clubs. She also focused her attention on community efforts such as: the Dance Marathon, Rise Against Hunger, and the Donna Marathon. She is currently attending Florida State University.

Zoom Presentation Features BK Grad Mr. Scott Thomas’ students experienced a unique interactive presentation in early May. Students had the opportunity to meet BK graduate Dr. Shannon Statham an integration and test engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory located in Pasadena, California. The Zoom meeting was attended by students enrolled in BK’s Computer Science Principles and Physics classes, as well as by members of the BK Robotics team. Dr. Statham, a graduate of the BK Class of 2000, earned undergraduate degrees from the University of North Florida and the University of Central Florida. She went on to earn an M.S. and a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. She has received numerous professional awards and accolades, and even finds time to pursue the arts when her schedule permits. Dr. Statham has fond memories of her high school years and said, “Even though I have a passion for science and math, I truly loved participating in the BK chorus! I made friends for life in the choir.” Dr. Statham shared the highlights of projects she has worked on since starting her career at NASA in 2011. She works extensively with Cube Sats which are mini satellites, as well as with integration and testing for projects including: RACE, MarCO, Sentinel-6, RainCube, and with the Environmental Dynamics Test lab. During the presentation Dr. Statham had the students answer online quiz questions to gauge the level of their aerospace knowledge. After

giving the correct answers she went on to explain each of the answer choices to give the students a broader level of understanding. Her love for NASA and aerospace engineering is evident and she encouraged the students to ask questions. Dr. Statham outlined what makes a NASA mission successful. “First you must have curiosity and want to ask the hard questions. Then Shannon Statham Ph.D. you need ingenuity and must BK Class of 2000 challenge yourself to think outside the box, followed by hard work and dedication. Then you finish with lots of collaboration with peers and industry partners to make the mission a complete success.” She explained that it also makes an excellent plan for college and life so that you can reassess where you are and where you want to go.

This year the young men had a wide array of projects from building score boards, to fencing baseball fields, refurbishing picnic tables and benches, to building blueberry shelters for a school’s environmental program. All projects benefit the local community and are funded at no cost to the public with the donated labor from the young men.

One of the main pillars of attaining the rank of Eagle Scout is the planning, development and completion of a significant service project. As part of the project, the scout must success-

C

ongratulations to Ansley Gibson ‘21, who was selected as Miss Bishop Kenny for 2020-21 at the annual pageant held in early March. Miss BK 2019-20, Mary Elizabeth Shoemaker, was on hand to perform the crowning ceremony. The first runner-up was Sarah Roberts and second runner-up was Elizabeth Coyle. Ansley was drawn to enter the Miss BK pageant because she wanted to step out of her comfort zone. Her win means that she will continue on to compete in the Miss Senior High pageant representing Bishop Kenny.

Ansley has a very rigorous academic schedule and is also very involved in after school activities. She puts her faith first saying, “I feel very fortunate to attend Bishop Kenny – a faith-filled environment where students are encouraged to grow spiritually and to care for others.” Ansley has accrued over 650 service hours by volunteering for Camp I am Special, Brook’s Adaptive Rowing, and sewing surgical caps for Wolfson Children’s Hospital. Ansley is a member of the Math, Science, Latin, and National Honor Societies. She is also an active member of the Latin and Science Clubs. Athletics are very important to Ansley. She is a varsity rower for the First Coast Rowing Club and student ambassador for their media accounts. Ansley, a three-year member of the BK swim team, plans to swim as a senior. She received a varsity letter in the sport this year. Her goal is to row competitively at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and major in Veterinary Medicine.

David D. Williams Beach Volleyball Courts

Bishop Kenny High School’s Beach Volleyball Team has a beautiful waterfront view thanks to the many generous donors who supported the David D. Williams Beach Volleyball Courts project. Completed last fall, the courts are named in honor of long-time teacher, coach, and administrator, David D. Williams. Our thanks is extended to Chuck Parliment ’69 and Ramzy Bakkar '93 for their leadership in helping to make this project a success.

I welcome the man of the hour, Dave Williams, his wife Terry and daughter Nadine, a member of the Class of 2015. I am proud to call Dave Williams a colleague, teacher, coach, and administrator…. but most importantly, I am happy to have called him my friend for more than 30 years. Dave, the response of the BK community to this project …undertaken in your honor… speaks volumes about the quality of your character, the respect your fellow teachers and administrators have for you, and the high regard in which you are held by your former students and athletes. — Todd Orlando, Principal

The courts, which are situated beyond the football field at the foot of William Johnston Stadium, were blessed and dedicated in November of 2019 by former BK President, Rev. Michael Houle in a ceremony attended by Coach Williams, his wife Terry and daughter Nadine ’15, and approximately 100 guests. Louis Joseph provided the hospitality at a casual reception held at the Mudville Grille after the dedication. Mrs. Suzanne Winkler, Coach of the BK Girls’ Indoor Volleyball Team, also heads the Beach Volleyball program which, due to the COVID-19, had an abbreviated first season on the new courts this year. Last year BK fielded a team that played at several locations at the beach as a pilot project. Remarkably, the team won their district and finally advanced to the State Final 4. Coach Winkler who played volleyball in college at Marymount University in Virginia has led the Lady Crusaders for 18 years, accumulating a winning record that includes the 2014 State Championship. It is with sadness that we report that Dave Williams passed away June 30, 2020 after a courageous three-year battle with ALS. May he rest in peace.

H

istory has been made! The BK Crusaders won the school’s first-ever 4A State Championship in girls’ soccer on February 26 defeating Cardinal Gibbons in a 2-1 win. The girls finished their season with a 16-4-2 record; they were ranked 16th in the state. Head coach Tom Devenny started the season with the team mantra, “unrivaled commitment.” He wanted the girls to know that he was committed to them and, in turn, he wanted them to be completely committed to the team. Coach Devenny has been the head coach of the team for three years. Prior to being named head coach, he served as assistant coach of the boys’ soccer team for three years and then as assistant coach of the girls’ team for four years. Coach Devenny said, “This is a very special team. I am very competitive and these young ladies are every bit as competitive as I am, along with having a tremendous amount of tal-

ent. They are truly amazing individuals on and off the soccer field and I just want to make a difference for them in their high school career.” The five senior players have been the heart and soul of the team. Haynes Grant, MVP of the game will continue her soccer career at the University of North Florida. Grant had an incredible season with 20 career goals while playing as a defender. Sophia Hefner will play for Wofford College. She did a tremendous job as the keeper for the team. Chloe Iliano will continue her career with the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Chloe enjoyed playing her final high school game with her sister, Gabi Iliano, who is also a senior. Coach Devenny is not one to rest on his laurels and already set his sights set on winning the 4A Regionals again next year and taking on the best teams in the state for the championship in 2021.

Girls’ Basketball Team State Runner-Up The BK Crusaders made another strong run in pursuit of their first state title in 28 years, but fell short against Orlando’s Lake Highland Prep at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland, Florida. The team finished the season as the runner-up in the state championship game with a 22–10 record. It was a hard fought game according to Coach Clark, “Obviously the loss is a hard one, but I am so proud of my girls for staying competitive with a team that, according to MaxPreps, was ranked 3rd in the country compared to our 204th ranking.” continued on page 41

Coach Clark leads by example and takes her “We over Me” philosophy into every aspect of the game with her players. The strength of schedule was ranked the toughest in Jacksonville according to MaxPreps and second in the 4A classification, only behind Highland Prep. Clark has been head coach at BK for five years and this was her second straight final four appearance and second runner-up finish. She values her players as individuals, but mandates that they always play as a team and work for the greater good of the program. She stated, “We had one of the toughest schedules in the state for a reason of wanting to prepare for this moment. So I’m able to see past the loss and be so proud for our school and our program.” Coach Clark will be losing seven seniors, six players and the team manager, with three of the seniors continuing to play basketball at the collegiate level. Amuk Tong will attend Flagler College on a full basketball scholarship and the Dolmovich twins, Rose & Rachel, will attend Oglethorpe University on academic scholarships and will play basketball. Senior Cara McCarthy finished the year with a record 535 assists as the starting point guard and 118 starts as a Crusader. Clark is already looking forward to next year and will count on Jasmyne Roberts and Maddie Millar to help lead the team to another state run for the elusive title. Roberts will be a senior next year and has been the leading scorer each year for the Crusaders while Millar ranks as one of the state’s best 3 point shooters. It is truly a team effort on all levels and the building for next year has already started. Coach Clark affirmed, “I have immense gratitude for my staff: Breanna Bohlen, Mike Marchigiano, and Tarla Millar for their dedication to the program – without their help this would not have been possible.”

Bob West Baseball Stadium Dedication On Saturday, March 7, 2020 the Bishop Kenny High School community gathered to witness the blessing and dedication of the school’s waterfront baseball stadium in honor of longtime baseball coach Bob West. Rev. Father Michael Houle, BK’s former President and long-time friend of Coach West, presided at the blessing.

some impressive statistics including an overall record of 532 wins and 129 losses, 16 district championships, 10 trips to the final four and, of course, the 2002 State Championship.

Principal Todd Orlando welcomed guests to the event which also served as an opportunity to unveil the many additions and improvements made to the stadium including a covered batting cage facility, a newly renovated press box, all new signage and, of course, a new name – Bob West Baseball Stadium.

Under Bob West’s leadership the Crusaders were ranked nationally seven times, 16 players were drafted by major league teams, and 4 players made it to the big leagues. Always an advocate for the players under his watch, Bob saw 70 college scholarships awarded to members of his team, two players were named All-Americans, seven were named players of the year, 40 were All-City players, and 21 were chosen as All-State players.

For 23 years the name Bob West and Bishop Kenny baseball were synonymous. In a coaching career spanning 30 years, 23 of which were spent as head coach of the always-tough Bishop Kenny Crusaders, Coach Bob West accumulated

Coach West was honored many times, too, over the years having been selected district coach of the year eight times, twice as Florida coach of the year, and once as southeastern coach of the year.

ALUMNI & REUNIONS Vocations a Tradition at BK

(L-R) Deacon Mac Hill ’10, Father Michael Houle ’71, and Rev. Clay Ludwig '11, just three of the many BK graduates who have gone on to study for the priesthood.

A

s we celebrate the ordination of Rev. Clay Ludwig ’11 to the priesthood, we thought it would be a good time to revisit our ever-growing list of Bishop Kenny graduates who have been ordained. Beginning with Father Mike Williams ’57, Bishop Kenny has seen a remarkable number of graduates answer the call to the priesthood.

Bishop Kenny's first four graduating classes, The Door Openers, are an important part of our history and archive. In the fall of 2019 a plaque honoring Bishop Kenny's first students, the classes of 1953-1957 (aka The Door Openers) was blessed and dedicated by Rev. Jason Trull '92 as part of the ongoing development of our archives.

The following is a list of BK’s graduate priests, many of whom serve right here in the Diocese of St. Augustine. The list includes those priests who have gone home to the Lord and also, those who continue to study and prepare for ordination. Julie Joseph Burke Scholarship This year’s Julie Joseph Burke Scholarship was presented at the 8th grade graduation program at Christ the King School. Julie’s daughter Kaylee Burke ’10 made the presentation to Monica Alraheb who is now a freshman at Bishop Kenny. The scholarship, which was established in memory of Julie Joseph Burke, a 1984 graduate of Christ the King and member of the BK Class of 1988, is awarded annually. Each recipient is awarded a one(L-R) Kaylee Burke, Hiyam Alraheb (Monica’s time $1,000 scholarship to help defray the cost of tuition at BKHS. mother), Monica Alraheb, scholarship recipient, Julie Joseph married Ronald Burke while attending college. and Julie Joseph Burke’s husband Ronald Burke They had two children, Kaylee, a 2010 BK graduate and a son Ronnie, who graduated in 2014. Julie passed away in 2004 after suffering complications from a heart condition. Julie’s parents, Donna and Joe Joseph BK ‘65, and husband, Ronnie Burke, established this scholarship to honor Julie’s life and memory in a way she would want. Julie was continually helping others to achieve their goals, giving to others, and serving her church, school, and community. She was an inspiration to all who knew her and a shining example of God’s love. Monica was selected for the award because she demonstrates many of the same qualities as Julie. Anyone who would like to make a contribution to the Julie Joseph Burke Scholarship at Bishop Kenny High School is encouraged to contact Sheila Marovich, Director of Advancement, at 398-7545 or advancement@bishopkenny.org.

BK Class of 2011

Rev. Clay Ludwig From The Avenue archives: (L-R) Clay Ludwig as a freshman at BK - Fall 2007; Clay Ludwig as a senior at the Cross dedication in 2011

C

lay Ludwig made his first appearance in The Avenue as a freshman in the fall of 2007. He was featured because he had been named one of only 10 students identified as America’s Top Young Catholic Leaders for 2007. He was selected for the distinction after his principal nominated him in a contest sponsored by Catholic Digest and QSP. As student council president at Christ the King school, 14year old Clay has shown exceptional leadership while organizing a Lenten project to plant flowers around his school and starting an after-school tennis camp for younger students. He is a member of the National Junior Honor Society and spends time tutoring other students. He leads the school’s daily prayers and announcements and emceed the school’s talent show. Clay is an altar server and a school representative at parish council meetings. Catholic Digest, January 2008

As a senior, the Class of 2011 was featured on the cover of The Avenue with the headline Class of 2011 Leaves Lasting Gift. The gift was the 30-foot tall Cross that sits at the foot of J. Joseph Parete Field. It is visible from both the athletic fields and from across the river. Clay and classmate and Student Council President Bobby Yarbrough were instrumental in securing the approval for the project and each spoke at the blessing ceremony which took place on the last day of school for seniors that year. Fr. Michael Houle led the blessing ceremony. How appropriate that Clay Ludwig, who was ordained Father Clay Ludwig in June of this year would make another distinguished appearance in The Avenue in celebration of his ordination to the priesthood. He returned to BK once again, to say Mass for the faculty and staff during preplanning in early August (see Alumni Milestones section). In his usual humble words he shared just how nervous and proud he was to return to BK and say Mass for so many of his former teachers at the school that means so much to him. Father Clay, we look forward to many more occasions when you can visit our campus. Congratulations and may God Bless you and your ministry to the Church.

COVID-19 Travel Odyssey Impacts Alumni In early March, a group of Bishop Kenny alumni traveled on the Celebrity cruise ship Eclipse departing from Buenos Aires for a 15-day cruise around Cape Horn. According to Louise Christian Johnson ’65, she and husband Robbie Johnson ’65, along with Lou Larmoyeux and wife Pat Stripling Larmoyeux ’62, ’64, and Donald and Chrissy Germano Smith ’65, boarded the ship on March 1. Their planned stops included Uruguay, Puerto Madryn, Ushuaia, Argentina, Punta Arenas, Chile, and a cruise through the Chilean Fjords. This 15-day cruise ultimately lasted an unexpected 30 days!

(L-R) Steven Catone ’84, Lou Larmoyeux ’62, Pat Stripling Larmoyeux ’64, Chrissy Germano Smith ’65, Louise Christian Johnson ’65 and Robbie Johnson '65 (not pictured Donald Smith) on the Celebrity cruise ship Eclipse in March 2020

According to Louise, “We were supposed to disembark in San Antonio, Chile on March 15, but because of COVID-19, and despite the best efforts of Celebrity and the State Department, the Chilean government would not allow us to disembark at our destination. So, while Celebrity tried to find a port that would accept the ship, we spent the next 2 weeks cruising around the Pacific Ocean.” The ship made one stop in Valparaiso, Chile to restock supplies and get medicine for the passengers. Louise commented, “We were lucky to have calm seas for the 12 days we spent cruising.” While her parents were on the trip, Louise and Robbie’s daughter Mindy ‘90 spotted another BK grad, Steven Catone ’84 on Facebook. He posted that he, too, was on the Celebrity Eclipse. After a little detective work Steve met up with the other BK grads on board. Such a small world! The ship was finally allowed to dock in San Diego. Everyone boarded a flight and returned safely home to Jacksonville on March 30. What an adventure!

Belated Reunion Wrap-Ups The following reunions occurred after the last edition of The Avenue. We were unable to publish the spring edition due to COVID-19 so we thought this would be the perfect time to share the information that was sent to us by the various reunions we missed! Thanks for your patience…enjoy.

Class of 1968 50 YEARS The Bishop Kenny Class of 1968 held its 50th reunion in September of 2018 at the Marriott Sawgrass Resort. BK Principal Todd Orlando and his wife Stacey ’84 visited with members of the class and at the Friday night Meet and Greet. In his brief remarks Mr. Orlando spoke about the closeness of the class and thanked us for our "Class of '68 Memorial Scholarship Fund" that had raised more than $84,000 since being established in 2011. The scholarship fund, which helps pay the cost of tuition for students in financial need, was inspired by the loss of so many of our classmates and honors them in a special way. The Saturday night dinner dance was held at Arbor Ballroom at the Marriott. Over 100 classmates came from as far west as California and as far north as New York. Special thanks goes to Susan DePadua Wilkinson and her talented committee for the amazing decorations including three large screens that showed a continuous stream of class pictures, old and new. The committee also displayed a memorial poster featuring pictures of our deceased classmates.

Many thanks co-chairs John Lawlor and Bill Hillegass and their hard working committee including Winnie McGowan Richardson, Susan DePadua Wilkinson, Kate Lyons, Mary Solomon DeSalvo, John Phelan, Denis Conlin, Nancy Owens Conlin, Denzel Smith, Ruth Owen, Martha Barrett, Sharon Benson Norman, Walter Liddell, Denny Williamson and Toosie Corn Williamson. Submitted by: Mary Solomon DeSalvo ‘68, Class Coordinator

At the beginning of dinner class President John Lawlor shared a few words and said a blessing. Our dinner entertainment was a surprise video featuring a bunch of classmates who were turned into a Motown dancing machine by Susan DePadua Wilkinson. The video, partially filmed at BK, featured a collage of Motown hits and also a tribute to Sister Thomas Joseph and Bishop Kenny High School! After dinner and the wonderful video, the lights were dimmed, the music played, and the dancing began. When it was over we hated to see the evening come to an end. Sunday morning Mass was at Our Lady Star of the Sea parish followed by breakfast at the Marriott. On Sunday, some classmates extended the celebration by going to the Alhambra to see Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up? It was the perfect ending to a perfect reunion weekend.

Members of the class of 1957 gathered at the Mudville Grille to cele80th Birthday Party brate their collective 80th birthdays in September 2019. Unfortunately, the occasion missed our last issue of The Avenue.

Class of 1957

A belated Happy Birthday to BK’s 5th graduating class! 48

Uniform-clad classmates practiced and filmed a great dance performance to the music of Motown favorites as part of a film produced by the class. Where better to do it than on the stage in the Carla Harris Performing Arts Center?
