ach year during pre-planning I share with the faculty and staff a vision or theme for the upcoming school year. This year’s theme can be summed up in three words – Faith, Focus, and Health. First and foremost, I challenge our entire school community to make it a priority to model their Faith – not just at church, but on campus and in the community. I look forward to hearing about all of the imaginative ways our teachers and campus ministers will employ to remind us that kindness, service, or simply listening to one another, are examples of modeling faith. Focus, because our security and well-being are enhanced when we are aware of one another and what is happening on our campus and surroundings. The third prong of this three-fold theme is Health, because we all need to be better educated to recognize the potential mental and physical challenges of those who could compromise the well-being of themselves and our school community. The path to putting these three simple words into action requires perseverance and continuing education. Our faculty and staff will receive this education at pre-planning and on in-service days throughout the coming year; an evening program for parents on the topic of mental health will be announced soon. I encourage all of our parents to take advantage of this speaker and the valuable information that will be shared at this program. This year marks the third year of an ambitious 5-year Strategic Plan implemented in the 2017-2018 school year. The plan continues to serve as a roadmap for annual and long range institutional planning. Much has been accomplished in these first two years of the plan and there is still much more ahead. In January we will share a report of our progress at the midpoint; as we evaluate what has been completed, what is in a partial phase of completion, and what has not yet been tackled. I look forward to sharing this with you. It has been a busy summer with limited classes in session, athletic camps, and ongoing campus improvement projects including the completion of the renovations made to the gym restrooms, a complete refresh of the cafeteria dining area, major enhancements to campus security, a new website, and the installation of a new phone system. I applaud our maintenance and housekeeping staff for keeping up with the demands of this 55-acre campus. They take great pride in their work! I am happy to report that the Office of Admissions has also been a busy place resulting in an opening day enrollment of 1,271 students and our largest freshman class in recent memory. We welcome all of these returning and future Crusaders to BK! I look forward to seeing all of you at a football game or other event as we kick-off the 2019-2020 school year, Bishop Kenny High School’s 68th year of service to the young people of Jacksonville. Sincerely,

Principal

40th Anniversary Celebration 250 guests gathered to celebrate Father Houle’s 40 years of priesthood.

Rev. Michael Houle ’71 greets several guests gathered to celebrate his 40th Anniversary at the Carla Harris Performing Arts Center in May.

BK past President Rev. Michael Houle, '71 celebrated his 40th Anniversary of ordination to the priesthood at a dinner in the Carla Harris Performing Arts Center in May. Father served as President of Bishop Kenny High School for 26 years from 1989-2015. His years of leadership were highlighted by major renovations to update existing campus facilities and the construction of new facilities. Many programs and services necessary to meet the needs of a growing student population were also added during Father’s years of leadership. Perhaps most importantly, Father Houle is well known for establishing a robust program of financial aid for families in need. We are happy to report that Father returns to BK frequently to sit in on finance and school board meetings and he is always willing to say Mass for alumni returning to campus to celebrate reunions. Father currently serves as Pastor of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Jacksonville Beach and as Parochial Vicar for Development and Finance for the Diocese of St. Augustine.

2019 Retirements from BKHS

(L-R) Recently retired faculty and staff members (L-R) Mrs. Liz Mashburn, Mr. Fred Mashburn, Mrs. Mary Ann Ervin, and Ms. Gail Rogers, were thanked and congratulated by Principal Todd Orlando at the annual end-of-school year faculty luncheon in May. (Not pictured Mrs. Pam Simpson)

In June, at the end-of-school year Mass and luncheon, the BK community celebrated the long and distinguished service of five members of the Bishop Kenny family. Faculty members, Mrs. Pam Simpson, Mr. Fred Mashburn and Mrs. Liz Mashburn, Mrs. Mary Ann Ervin of the Office of School Counseling, and Ms. Gail Rogers of the support staff, were honored. Together, their combined years of service to BK totals 135 years! The entire Bishop Kenny Community celebrates the many contributions of these dedicated members of our school family. We send best wishes for a long, healthy, and happy retirement to all.

THE FUND Named BK Scholarships

The following pages detail the results of the 2018-2019 Fund for Bishop Kenny High School. Designed to expand annual giving beyond a financial assistance-only appeal, the Fund for BKHS welcomes and encourages generosity on behalf of other projects, improvements, initiatives of all kinds and, of course, individual scholarships. Over the past two years we have asked many of our parents, alumni, and friends for specific and even increased gift amounts. Your response to our refreshed appeal has been one of great generosity. This year we have broken a record with the total of unrestricted gifts reaching $292,750 and restricted gifts totaling $149,188. The combined response to the traditional mailing and phone calling, online giving, our Day of Giving appeal, and follow-up appeals resulted in an increase of nearly $50,000 in unrestricted gifts! We thank all of our donors whose gifts make such a big difference in the lives of our students. We look forward to another successful year of Annual Giving to BKHS during the 2019-2020 school year and hope that we are able, for the first time ever, to reach $300,000 in unrestricted gifts to BK. Please know that the intentions of our benefactors are remembered at daily Mass in the Bishop Paul F. Tanner Chapel.

Benefactors Mass

O

n December 6, the Feast of St. Nicholas, the Bishop Kenny community gathered for a Mass of Thanksgiving to celebrate the generosity of donors who give selflessly to our school each year. Members of the William Kenny Society, donors whose generosity is at the $1,000-plus giving level gathered for Mass in the Paul F. Tanner Chapel. At Mass Father Martin remembered the intentions of BK’s countless benefactors, past and present, who have given so generously to our school. At the end of Mass guests were presented with a lapel pin as a token of appreciation. A reception followed in the Demetree Learning Commons. We are so grateful for the continued generosity of the BK community.

CLASS OF 2019 67th Graduating Class of BKHS Forbes Magazine Names BK Grad One of 30 Under 30 Chris Davlantes ‘11 has been named to the 2019 Forbes Magazine list of 30 Under 30. Each year Forbes identifies a total of 600 entrepreneurs in 20 different industries, Chris is one of the 20 chosen in the category of Energy Sustainability. A graduate of MIT, with a double major in electrical and mechanical engineering, Chris is the founder of Reach Labs a company located in Oakland, California that is working to create wireless technology that, as the website describes, “is the foundation for a new standard of power delivery and distribution.” The website continues, “In a world of growing connectivity, the ability to access continuous and untethered power is critical for optimizing productivity and overall performance. From warehouses to factory floors to hospitals, the potential for gamechanging advancements with long-range power is extensive.”

Reverend Michael Hartley ‘06 Father Michael Hartley was invited to celebrate graduation Mass for the Class of 2019 in keeping with our tradition of inviting clergy who are BK graduates to do the honors. Quite possibly the youngest priest to say Mass for a BK graduating class, Father Michael delivered a message that the students could take to heart. He encouraged them to do three things: to pray, to continue going to Church, and to be open to new experiences. Father Michael is from a long line of Bishop Kenny and Assumption school graduates. He was ordained a priest of the Diocese of PensacolaTallahassee Parkes in June of 2016. His late father Gene Hartley ‘75 and mother Tammy Vaughan Hartley Martin ’77 and all four siblings are BK graduates.

Graduation Speaker Chris Davlantes '11 While at Bishop Kenny, Chris Davlantes participated in the local science fair with several of his garage projects, eventually progressing to the international level where he was awarded second place. While his favorite classes were typically focused on math and science, he also had a love for music.

“No matter where you go, what you do, or how life may turn, the memories you made at Bishop Kenny with the people you love will always stay with you. Enjoy the summer and appreciate how blessed you are to be in this room with friends and family that care about you in a sunny town that will always welcome you home with open arms. I leave you with one final reminder: remember your roots, experiment with the world around you, and challenge everything with a humble disregard for what’s considered possible.”

After graduating from Bishop Kenny, Chris went on to attend MIT where he started out studying applied physics before switching to electrical engineering and later augmenting his studies with mechanical engineering. While in college, Chris also stayed true to his musical passions, often playing at local establishments around Cambridge as a guitarist in a bluegrass group. When he wasn’t in class or practicing music, Chris could be found tinkering in his basement or working as an undergraduate researcher on autonomous underwater systems and Bose-Einstein condensate detectors for gravitational waves. In early 2015, Chris founded the industrial, longrange wireless power company, Reach Labs, out of a side project in his basement. The company has since grown to be much larger than himself and has deployed its adaptive antenna power transfer systems in several factories across Asia and Europe. Its stock is now traded in private markets.

Earlier this year, at the age of 25, Chris was honored as one of Forbes Magazine’s 30 Innovators Under 30 for his work in the energy sector (see sidebar). More than anything else, Chris hopes to be able to contribute to the communities around him in some valuable way. 12

This year, over 2,000 students were nominated for the Emma St. John and Principal Todd Orlando Scholarship, and 118 finalists at the Senior Awards program were invited to take part in a four-day competition at U. Va., which included seminar discussions, essay and mathematics examinations, and interviews conducted by the University’s alumni and faculty. In addition to receiving a full 4-year scholarship, Jefferson scholars benefit from many other enrichment programs sponsored by the Foundation including: travel abroad, career networking activities, an outdoor challenge program, and a leadership speaker series. Emma would like to utilize these skills to help her reach her ultimate goal of earning a law degree and eventually becoming an FBI field agent. 16

AUCTION REPORT 33rd Annual Auction

T

he BK Boosters auction committee introduced an online portal in a major overhaul of the club’s largest annual fundraising event held each spring. The portal provided an online preview of auction items, an opportunity for guests and those who could not attend to place bids on silent auction items, and a streamlined check-out for winning bidders. The auction, held in the John Baldwin Athletic Center, was attended by approximately 500 parents, alumni, and friends of the school. Dinner was provided by Carrabba’s Italian Grill and dessert compliments of Bruster’s Ice Cream. Professional auctioneer Luman Beasley, who volunteered his services for the evening, kept the bidding going as an enthusiastic

Guests enjoyed placing their silent auction bids online this year.

crowd raised their paddles in the live auction portion of the program. The silent auction area featured the usual impressive display of gift baskets, gift certificates for restaurants and getaways, and items including electronics, sports memorabilia, sporting goods, housewares, jewelry, artwork, and more. The committee reports that event sponsorships and auction item sales resulted in a profit of $130,000. The club will use the money for projects that benefit the academic and athletic programs offered at Bishop Kenny High School. Since 1986 the auction has generated over $2.7 million and has helped to pay for countless projects, large and small.

The hardest working volunteer at Auction 2019? Auctioneer Luman Beasley, who successfully sells over 100 live auction items every year! Thank you, Luman.

Mark Y our Ca

34 th BK Student volunteers were available to assist auction guests with online check-in, bidding, and checkout.

Countless volunteers including (L-R) Silvia Morrill and Gina Farmand worked their magic at Basket Days and set-up days this year. It takes a large team of volunteers to make the BK Boosters Auction a success every year.

AROUND CAMPUS Campus Ministry Preparing minds, hearts, and souls for college and for life is more than a school slogan. It is a concept that is fundamental to the BK experience. Together, the Department of Campus Ministry, the religion faculty, and the sponsors of BK’s many service clubs, work to foster in our students an appreciation for the value of a life that includes service to others, especially the poor and vulnerable.

Bishop Kenny students are always eager to answer the call when Catholic Charities needs assistance.

Each year BK students complete more than 56,000 hours of community service. The variety of projects and agencies that are touched by this outreach is impressive. Volunteers are engaged in helping people who are sick, injured, elderly, poor, hungry, homeless, physically challenged, and academically challenged. Deacon Robert De Luca commented, “We believe that formation in the faith extends beyond the thresholds of the religion classroom. We invite and encourage our students to deepen their relationship with God through service to others, especially those most in need.”

Ryan Bell ‘19 Named Student of the Year Congratulations to Ryan Bell ‘19 for being selected by the Exchange Club of Jacksonville as the Male Student of the Year. Ryan was selected based on Outstanding Scholarship, Leadership, Community Service, and Character. Mr. David Sian, Chair for the State of Florida Exchange Club said, “This year we have had the most rigorous selection process, in the most competitive schools with the best-prepared students in the state.” Ryan Bell is to be commended for his stellar high school career.” Ryan was awarded a $2,000 scholarship and an opportunity to compete in the District Competition in West Palm Beach, FL.

(L-R) Counselor Mary Ann Ervin, Ryan Ball, NJROTC Instructor Master Chief Kevin Harris (USN Ret.) attended the Exchange Club luncheon where Ryan Bell ’19 was honored as Student of the Year and presented with a $2,000 scholarship.

In his four years at BK Ryan was very active in the school and Jacksonville communities, accruing over 750 service hours since his freshman year. Ryan served as the Cadet Lt. Commander, Commanding Officer of the BK NJROTC Unit and earned Eagle Scout status with the Boy Scouts of America Troop 485. Catholic Leadership Award Deacon Robert A. De Luca, Bishop Kenny Director of Campus Ministry, is the recipient of the Catholic Leadership Award presented by Saint Anselm College located in Manchester, New Hampshire. The award was presented to Deacon, a St. Anselm graduate, at the school’s Fall Awards Dinner held during homecoming weekend in September. Catechism is a word that rarely inspires excitement. But, if you are Robert De Luca, you know that catechesis derives from a Greek word meaning echo, and that the calling of the Catholic teacher is to echo the words and life of Christ. As a teacher, an ordained deacon, a writer, an administrator, and a pastoral presence, Deacon De Luca has spent his life doing just that. Upon leaving Saint Anselm with a B.A. in Theology in 1974, Deacon De Luca began work in catechetical ministry and has never stopped, serving in high schools, parishes, and colleges in New Hampshire, New York, and Florida for more than four decades. In 1986 he earned an M.A. in Pastoral Ministry from the Jesuit Institute of Pastoral Ministry and Religious Education at Boston College and has pursued additional post-graduate work at Providence College and the University of Notre Dame. In 2006 Deacon De Luca was ordained to the Sacred Order of Deacons by Bishop Victor Galeone. Today, twenty years after being recruited by Father Michael Houle to move to Jacksonville and take leadership of the Department of Campus Ministry at Bishop Kenny, Deacon De Luca continues to actively live out his vocation by guiding young people in their faith. He also serves as a member of the pastoral staff of St. Luke Catholic Church, as the Chairperson of Clergy Continuing Education, as a faculty member of the of the diocesan Ministry Formation program, and as an adjunct Instructor of Theology at Saint Leo’s University. A member and leader of the National Conference of Catechetical Leaders, Deacon De Luca continues to apply his expertise in consulting for Catholic publishers. In his determination to echo the words and life of Christ, Deacon De Luca has cultivated a particular interest in the intersection of the fields of Psychology and Theology. He is zealous in his desire to welcome home alienated Catholics and promote the professional growth and development of lay women and men in the Church’s ministry. The Bishop Kenny community celebrates the recognition and award bestowed on Deacon De Luca by Saint Anselm College.

Morgan Stanley Grant to Further STEM Initiatives at BK

STEM at Bishop Kenny

O

n any Tuesday or Thursday afternoon during the fall semester, the Robotics lab at Bishop Kenny is a frenzy of activity. Students work with power tools to assemble robots, a 3D printer creates custom parts, student programmers type pages of code on their laptops, and drivers practice maneuvering their robot on a mock game arena. The Robotics Lab, now only two years old, has provided the opportunity for students to participate in exciting competitions that test ingenuity, design, and teamwork. This is just one facet of the many developments in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) at Bishop Kenny.

Custom workstations, complete with multiple monitors and a 3D printer, are among the many improvements made to the Robotics Lab workspace.

The Bishop Kenny High School Robotics program was awarded a $25,000 grant from the Morgan Stanley Foundation last December. Principal Todd Orlando commented, “The grant has made it possible for us to improve and expand the Robotics Lab which was opened to students just two short years ago. The generosity of the Morgan Stanley Foundation has made a great impact on our ability to open this program to more students.” Over the past 15 years Bishop Kenny has made great strides towards providing students with a relevant and real-world 21st century education enriched through the integration of technology in the classroom, expansion of its curriculum to include AP and elective courses in STEM-specific areas, as well as providing access to after-school programs. According to Mr. Orlando, “The recent success of the Robotics program is due in no small part to the addition of a dedicated workspace for students to collaborate and create.”

The 2018 season brought great successes for the Robotics team which qualified for state championships. This year’s challenge involved simulating a Mars rover, which had to pick up and deposit mineral samples from the game arena. The game involved both an autonomous phase, when robots are required to act independently based on their programming, and a driver-controlled phase, during which student operators can control the robots by using a joystick. Senior James Deats used his experience and computer programming knowledge to develop the Crusader robot’s software. In a promising sign, the younger students (nicknamed the Squires) also gained experience with both the hardware and software aspects of robotics, ensuring Bishop Kenny success for seasons to come. As a team, the students developed systems of gears, pulleys, and motors that are controlled by an equally complicated computer program, capable of tasks including; recognizing the color of a mineral sample or lifting mineral deposits into the rover.

Students gather at the Robotics Lab to collaborate about the design and programming of their latest project. The newly-renovated Robotics Lab offers expanded facilities to accommodate more students.

The 2018-2019 year also brought a new elective to Bishop Kenny – AP Computer Science A. This course is comparable to a first-year college-level course in Java programming. Students learn the fundamental structures of programming, such as variables, conditionals, loops, functions, recursion, object-oriented programming, and more. Students from AP Computer Science A attended the Lockheed Martin CodeQuest challenge in Orlando in April. Held at the defense contractor’s headquarters, the competition gathered computer science students from across the state to compete in problem-solving challenges. Although this was the first year that Bishop Kenny had sent a team to CodeQuest, the Crusaders placed 4th out of 56 Novice teams. The team was the result of hard work by seniors James Deats and Danny Madrid, and junior MaryAlice Young - all members of the inaugural AP Computer Science A class, taught by Mr. Thomas Clark. According to MaryAlice, the collaborative nature of the CodeQuest challenge was a positive experience that showed the power of teamwork. “It was nice to work in a group because it helped us come up with different ways to solve the problems.” MaryAlice’s talents are not restricted to the classroom, however. MaryAlice took home the 1st place award at the State Science Fair Championship for Florida, in the category

Vicki Schmitt Receives Award Mrs. Vicki Schmitt, Chairman of the BK Science Department, was named the 2018 Member of the Year Award presented by the Air Force Association Falcon Chapter #399. Mrs. Schmitt is an active supporter of the chapter’s Aerospace Education Programs which are designed to promote STEM education. She also advises the Chapter’s leadership team on STEM activities at the high school level and is instrumental in providing outreach to the community through Bishop Kenny programs. Mrs. Schmitt has been teaching at Bishop Kenny High School for the past 22 years and has been the Science Department Chair for 14 years. She teaches AP Chemistry and Chemistry I Honors and founded STEAM Day at BK three years ago to promote middle school engineering. She is on the core team for the Northeast Florida Regional Science and Engineering Fair, and her students participate in the Army Corps of Engineers annual high school competition.

Mrs. Vicki Schmitt BK Science Department Chairman honored by the Air Force Association Falcon Chapter #399 as the 2018 Member of the Year.

of Intelligent Machines, Robotics, and Systems Software. Her project involved using electromagnetism to simulate the effects of gravity for astronauts, who can suffer negative physical effects in the microgravity environment of space. MaryAlice is excited about the potential applications of her science fair project. “I created an electromagnetic walking apparatus, and I made and applied a computer program to the apparatus to control the walking motion along with the current flowing through the walking electromagnets. I have a patent pending on a suit that astronauts can wear in space with electromagnets throughout it so they can experience the effects of gravity.”

“Vicki Schmitt has been an advocate for STEM education on so many levels, and we can’t thank her enough for raising awareness about the AFA Falcon Chapter #399 in Northeast Florida,” stated Larry Belge, AFA Falcon Chapter President. “She is truly an asset to Jacksonville and to her students at Bishop Kenny High School.”

The new STEM initiatives have an impact beyond just science and technology.

Among her many prizes, acquired at various levels of the science fair from the local to the international, are the US Air Force Award, the Naval Science Award, the Yale Science and Engineering Association Award, the NASA Earth System Science Award, and a full-tuition scholarship to the Florida Institute of Technology. In addition to sending students to the Science Fair, Bishop Kenny has an active Science Club. This year, Science Club has been busy with the Army Corps of Engineers competition. The challenge this year involved building a canoe out of concrete, designed to hold the maximum weight without sinking. Students gained hands-on experience with design and engineering, including performing calculations that related weight to load. According to Mrs. Vicki Schmitt, chair of the Science department, it was a meaningful experience for students that related to their future goals. “Students enjoy the opportunity to be creative and test their ideas. Many of the participants go on to study in the field of engineering.” The new STEM initiatives at Bishop Kenny have an impact beyond just science and technology. Religion teacher Brandon Allen, who started the Bishop Kenny E-Sports team during the 2018-2019 school year, sees the technology as a means towards a greater purpose. E-sports refers to online gaming, which can be just as competitive and intense as traditional

sports. Schools across the country have started E-Sports teams to compete in online games like Rocket League (which involves playing virtual soccer with user-controlled race cars). Due to its online nature, the BK Crusaders have been able to play teams across the country without leaving the computer lab. Mr. Allen has emphasized Catholic values since the Esports Team’s inception. “As a Catholic school, it is part of our mission and goal to reach every student intellectually and spiritually. On a social level, the group in its first year has brought many students a sense of belonging and friendship. On a more professional level, it has provided a great opportunity for students to practice leadership, teamwork, and re-

sponsibility.” Sergio Saab ‘20, the junior captain of the E-sports team, treats the team just like any other sport. “It is the feeling of competitiveness that drove me to join E-sports, the same feeling that has drawn many an athlete to play their sport competitively,” says Saab. “For me, joining the E-sports team was a decision I will never forget. Much like that of a physical sports team, the bonds I share with my teammates transcend that of typical high school friends. We are a sort of family – we all go through both the good and bad times together as a team.” Whether it is through robots, coding, concrete canoes, electromagnetic gravity simulators, or competitive video games, the STEM offerings at Bishop Kenny this year have dramatically increased the opportunities for students to get involved with technology outside of class. All of these offerings remain tied to Bishop Kenny’s identity as a Catholic school striving to educate the whole student in body, mind, and soul. The Academic Department is excited to launch a new initiative this year, the AP Capstone program. AP Capstone is an innovative College Board program consisting of two courses, AP Seminar and AP Research. Within these two courses, students practice core academic skills that are increasingly valued by colleges and universities. Within AP Seminar, taken during the junior year, students will engage in cross-curricular conversations where they will explore complex academic and real-world topics. They will synthesize information from multiple sources, develop their own perspectives in written essays, and design and deliver oral and visual presentations, both individually and as a team. The following year in AP Research, students will more deeply explore an academic topic, problem, or issue of individual interest. Each student will complete a yearlong investigation to address a research question, culminating in a final academic paper that must be presented and defended. Students who earn passing scores in AP Seminar and AP Research, along with passing scores in four additional AP courses, will earn the AP Capstone Diploma. This diploma program aligns well with Bishop Kenny’s mission of preparing students well for college. The skills developed within this program, as well as the unique experiences of the two courses, model the methodology and inquiry that are common in higher education. Bishop Kenny High School is one of a handful of schools in Northeast Florida approved by the College Board to offer AP Capstone. The program will launch this school year with the inaugural AP Seminar course, facilitated by Academic Dean Mr. Michael Broach ’99.

NJROTC Hosts CyberCamp

Incoming Freshman cadets at CyberCamp 2019

The Bishop Kenny High School NJROTC Unit hosted their 2nd Annual CyberCamp under the auspices of the Air Force Association’s CyberPatriot Program. This year the cadet cadre volunteers taught the incoming freshmen cadets about cyber security in an effort to provide a leadership challenge for the cadre and also to promote team-building among the freshman cadets. This was very successful as the freshmen achieved groundbreaking scores during their practice competition round which mimics a real competition round in a CyberPatriot National Youth Cyber Defense Competition.

The CyberPatriot competition and program was created to account for the increasing growth of internet usage; it is important that users not become careless when it comes to their cyber security. CyberPatriot is a program designed to teach young people how to be safe in the use of their computers. Everyone who participated in CyberCamp enjoyed the learning experience and created new friendships. To learn more about CyberPatriot, please visit www.usycyberpatriot.org. BK Athletics Update The Bishop Kenny Athletic program enjoyed a very successful season last year. More than 50% of the student body participated in one or more sports and many teams competed in post season competition at the district, regional, and state levels. Volleyball and Beach Volleyball made it to the State Final Four and Girls’ Basketball made it all the way to the State Finals. Go Crusaders! In the 2019-2020 school year Bishop Kenny teams will play in different districts. This is an outcome of the FHSAA redistributing all teams throughout the state of Florida. A school’s district classification will vary by sport and is based on the student population of the school. As an example, football is now a 5A team, while volleyball is 4A, and soccer is 2A, etc. Over the past two years BK’s athletic facilities have undergone significant upgrades including improvements to the John Baldwin Athletic Center (see below for details). Currently, three beach volleyball courts are under construction

(see page 41 for details). At William Johnston Stadium the bleachers have been rebuilt and refurbished, new play clocks are ready for the upcoming season, and a new track, made possible in part by the significant generosity of the BK Boosters, has been installed. New fencing has been installed at the tennis courts and the baseball complex has a new backstop wall and netting around the infield. A newly leveled playing surface and improvements to the drainage system, as well as upgrades to the dugouts and batting cages, complete improvements to the softball complex. Finally, a video monitor and training software have been added to the weight room. Athletic Director Mark Thorson said, “We are looking forward to another great year for Bishop Kenny Athletics. The coaches and athletes are hard at work preparing for the fall season. We encourage all of our students, alumni, and fans to come out and support our athletes in their quest to bring championships to Bishop Kenny High School.”

Baldwin Center Improvements The newly renovated restrooms in the John Baldwin Athletic Center. Not only are the new restrooms a beautiful shade of BK red, both the men’s and the women’s facilities offer baby changing stations for our guests!

Two years ago the John Baldwin Athletic Center underwent an interior facelift that included the replacement of 2 of its 4 air conditioning units; refinishing and remarking the floor complete with a bold BK at center court; all new LED lighting; and the refinishing and re-installation of the permanent bleachers that were installed when the gym was built in 1962. A championship wall with interactive video board was added to the lobby, and extensive unanticipated underground work to the plumbing systems that were also part of the original 1962 construction was also completed. Due to these timeconsuming plumbing repairs it was necessary to stop the project short of the interior renovation of the restrooms. This past April, the day following the auction, the Baldwin Center restroom facilities were closed. They have undergone a complete renovation including the reconfiguration of the space to accommodate an enlarged women’s restroom facility. The John Baldwin Center is the most-used facility on the BK campus. During the school year it is used for PE classes, varsity, JV, and freshman team practices and games. During the summer months, camps occupy the facility leaving little time to accomplish regular maintenance and renovation. The results of the renovation are a welcome addition to this facility. Thanks for your patience during this most recent campus project. 39

Kenny Angels Celebrates 40 Years of Service

Athletic Director Mark Thorson and Principal Todd Orlando greeted and thanked current and former BK Angels for their years of service to the athletic department. Former angel Donna Deegan even wore her original Kenny Angels jacket to the game and, at the end of the evening, donated it to the school to include in the archive. Thanks, Donna!

Members of Kenny Angels, past and present, were on hand as the Athletic Department celebrated the 40-year anniversary of the club and the countless hours of service that they provide to BK Athletics each year. With Angels assembled at half-court on a Friday night that featured four back-to-back Crusader basketball games, announcer Tim Yocum read, “In 1978, Athletic Director, Joe Parete helped establish the Angels to staff on-campus concessions at BK. Since then, more than 750 young women, including 55 this year alone, have stepped up to serve the hungry and thirsty spectators attending BK Athletic events.” Special recognition was also given to Ms. Traci Nelms, an unofficial Kenny Angel, who has volunteered in the BK concessions for more than 30 years. Traci is the very definition of an Angel. We thank Traci for her years of tireless service to BK and the Athletic Department. As a token of appreciation, a beautiful Christmas ornament featuring the Kenny Angels logo was presented to each of the Angels in attendance.

Best of All First Coast Preps Bishop Kenny High School was well-represented at the inaugural Florida Times-Union Best of All First Coast Preps event held at the Prime Osborn Convention Center in May. The program, designed to celebrate the accomplishments of high school student-athletes, featured a banquet and an awards program. Yulee native and Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry, served as guest speaker at the program. Congratulations to the following BK Crusader athletes who were among the 1st, 2nd and 3rd team All First Coast Prep athletes invited by The Florida Times-Union. BK Boosters President Anthony Parete ‘80 and wife Kathy were greeted by Yulee native and Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry who served as guest speaker for the event.

The 2018-19 Beach Volleyball Team

Beach Volleyball on the Waterfront “The success of the Sailing Team, which is also a club sport, has given us confidence in the decision to add Beach Volleyball to our program.”

The popularity and success of the BK Volleyball program is well known. Volleyball will soon have a larger profile with the addition of club level Girls’ Beach Volleyball this spring. The school’s athletic department has studied the feasibility of adding the sport which is growing in popularity throughout Florida and beyond for some time. Athletic Director Mark Thorson commented, “The success of the sailing team, which is also a club sport, has given us confidence in the decision to add Beach Volleyball to our program. There are great scholarship opportunities for athletes in Beach Volleyball which makes this opportunity an even better fit for our students.” Suzanne Winkler, Coach of the BK Girls’ Indoor Volleyball Team, is slated to lead the program. Last

year BK fielded a team that played at various locations at the beach as a pilot project. Remarkably, the team won their district and finally advanced to the State Final Four. Coach Winkler, who played volleyball in college at Marymount University in Virginia, has led the Lady Crusaders for 17 years, accumulating a winning record that includes the 2014 State Championship. The Beach Volleyball Team will play on three regulation courts that are currently under construction. They will be situated on the waterfront at the foot of William Johnston Stadium. The courts will be completed early this fall, well in advance of the inaugural season which begins in the spring of 2020.

Girls’ Basketball Team Advances to State Finals The BK Crusader Girls’ Basketball Team returned to the State Finals for the first time in 27 years in February. The team, under the leadership of Coach Charlsea Clark, finished the season as the State runner-up with a record of 29-3. Congratulations on a great season!

Congratulations to the Girls’ Volleyball Team The 2018-2019 Volleyball Team made it to the State Final Four.

Tim Krause Named Head Football Coach Coach Tim Krause has taken over the head coaching duties of the BK football program. Krause spent eight seasons as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at Bishop Kenny prior to taking the head coaching reigns at Nease High School. While at Nease, Krause led the Panthers to the 2015 District Championship and was named the Jeff Holt Pursuing Victory with Honor Coach of the Year at the end of that season. The Bishop Kenny community welcomes the return of Coach Krause and looks forward to this exciting new era of BK Crusader football. My family and I are extremely excited to return to Bishop Kenny. I am grateful for the chance to serve as BK’s head football coach and work under the positive leadership of Principal Todd Orlando and Athletic Director Mark Thorson. This is an amazing opportunity to continue the work that Mark Thorson and Bobby Raulerson have done to put this program in a position to be successful year in and year out. My staff and I will work tirelessly to build men of character and ensure that our teams will make our school community proud. I am looking forward to building relationships with the current players in the program and working towards the 2019 season.

ALUMNI & REUNIONS

Author José Ramirez ‘63 Visits Campus (Left) José Ramirez ’63 hosted an informational presentation and book signing in the Demetree Learning Commons in February.

B

ishop Kenny hosted a book signing featuring graduate José Ignacio Ramirez ’63, author of Cuba and the "Last" Baseball Season, in February. The book which features a foreword by Red Sox Hall Fame inductee Luis Tiant Jr. tells the story of baseball players in Cuba and in the U.S. minor league who were unable to pursue their dream of playing professional baseball in their home country under the Castro regime. In a presentation to guests gathered in the Demetree Learning Commons, José shared stories of his research into the stories of these talented athletes who left Cuba in order to pursue their passion for baseball. Included in the group were players who ended up playing in Jacksonville, Fernandina Beach, and Palatka. José also brought his personal collection of baseball memorabilia for the assembled guests to see. This is the second book from José Ramirez and the second time that BK was happy to host a book signing. In his first book, Defining Moments: A Cuban Exile's Story about Discovery and the Search for a Better Future, José chronicled his personal journey as part of Operation Pedro Pan, the mass exodus of over 14,000 unaccompanied Cuban minors to the United States between 1960 and 1962. José’s personal journey as one of those minors brought him to Camp St. John and Bishop Kenny High School. We are proud of this fine alumnus of our school.

José addressed American History students who gathered to hear his presentation about his experience as a young man who fled to the United States from Cuba as part of Operation Pedro Pan in the early 1960s. Students were fascinated with his story of living at Camp St. John and attending Bishop Kenny High School.

JU Selects Kathryn Cusick Dougan ’94 to Lead Women’s Golf Team BK graduate Kathryn Cusick Dougan ’94 has been named head coach of the Jacksonville University Women’s Golf Team. After graduating from Bishop Kenny Kathryn attended the University of Alabama on a full athletic scholarship. She is a two-time NCAA All-American and twotime All-SEC choice. JU Athletic Director Alex Ricker-Gilbert commented in an announcement about the appointment, “Kathryn brings a wealth of playing experience to the helm of the women's program. She competed on the LPGA Futures Golf tour, the official development tour of the LPGA, during which she won the 2001 Lincoln Futures Golf Classic. She went on to

compete in the 2003 U.S. Women's Open.” Kathryn had a distinguished career as a member of the BK golf team. She was undefeated as a prep player in regular season tournaments, led the Lady Crusaders to the 1993 and 1994 District Championships and a 3rd place team finish at the 1994 State Championship. Kathryn’s many accomplishments while at BK include being selected as the 1994 Jacksonville Sports Hall of Fame All-Around Female Athlete of the Year and 4-time recipient of The Florida Times-Union Player of the Year. Congratulations, Kathryn!

Mr. Orlando delivered an informal “State of BK” message to those in attendance. In his report he shared that our school enrollment is very strong with approximately 1,250 students expected for the first day of school in August. The graduates listened with great interest and pride to the good news of BK’s continued growth, strong academic program and, of course, Crusader athletics was shared. All Door Openers are asked to maintain a current e-mail address with the Alumni Office to insure that future invitations are received.

Alumnus Raises Funds for Firefighters Katie Rose ’15 is making something positive out of the loss of her firefighter uncle, Captain Ronald Rabon ‘91, to cancer last year. By raising money for the Hoods for Heroes campaign, Katie was able to help provide Jacksonville Beach firefighters with 30 lifesaving hoods that help protect firefighters' skin from carcinogens released during fires. Captain Rabon is survived by his wife Ashley Lea Rabon ’96 and their three children. Ashley was on hand for the presentation of the hoods to the Jacksonville Beach Fire Dept. where Ron worked. In addition to supporting Katie in her efforts to purchase the hoods, she has also been a vocal advocate for the passage of Florida State Senate Bill 426 that guarantees cancer coverage for firefighters. The bill passed the State House and Senate in April, was signed by Governor DeSantis in May, and took effect on July 1, 2019.

Julie Joseph Burke Scholarship This year’s Julie Joseph Burke Scholarship was presented at the 8th grade graduation program at Christ the King School. Julie’s daughter Kaylee Burke ’10 made the presentation to Diego Dionisio who is now a freshman at Bishop Kenny. The scholarship, which was established in memory of Julie Joseph Burke, a 1984 graduate of Christ the King and member of the BK Class of 1988, is awarded annually. Each recipient is awarded a one-time $1,000 scholarship to help defray the cost of tuition at BKHS. Julie Joseph married Ronald Burke while attending college. They had two children, Kaylee, a 2010 BK graduate and a son Ronnie, who graduated in 2014. Julie passed away in 2004 after suffering complications from a heart condition. Julie’s parents, Donna and Joe Joseph BK ‘65, and husband, Ronnie Burke, established this scholarship to honor Julie’s life and memory in a way she would want. Julie was continually helping others to achieve their goals, giving to others, and serving her church, school, and community. She was an inspiration to all who knew her and a shining example of God’s love. Diego was selected for the award because he demonstrates many of the same qualities as Julie.

Nearly 100 classmates and their guests came together for a fun-filled night catching up with one another, sharing stories, and reliving old memories. Classmates came from all over to attend, including Atlanta, Chicago, and San Diego. The evening was highlighted with popular 80s music, a slideshow of old pictures collected by classmates, and taking the time to honor those from the class that watched from Heaven.
