CELEBRATING

65 YEARS

Auction Wrap-Up | Congratulations Class of 2016

FROM THE PRINCIPAL Advisory School Board At a luncheon held in May, six longstanding members of the board were honored on the occasion of their retirement from service. Principal Todd Orlando shared, “The Advisory School Board provides support and guidance to the Administration of the school. Each of these longstanding volunteers was recruited by Father Houle, serving during his many years as President of the school. It has been my pleasure to work alongside each of these volunteers during my years as Principal. Their many contributions to our school have helped to make it what it is today.”

BK faculty kicked off the school year with Mass and a tour at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in downtown Jacksonville.

A

s a former history teacher I am especially happy that we have chosen to make our namesake, Bishop William J. Kenny, a focal point of our 65th anniversary observance. Just prior to the Founders’ Mass on September 8, the Religion teachers presented a lesson about the life and work of Bishop Kenny to our students. Each student also received a card featuring the image of Bishop Kenny, along with the significant dates and events of his life. It is our plan to do the same with all future freshman classes in conjunction with the Founders’ Mass so that all Bishop Kenny graduates will have an understanding of the significance of our namesake’s life and work. On the first day of pre-planning in August, the administration, faculty, and staff went on a pilgrimage to the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception which, coincidentally, was Father William Kenny’s first assignment as Pastor. Father Kenny’s work at the church and in the Jacksonville community, especially through some very challenging times, is significant to our city’s history. I believe that our faculty’s visit was enlightening and impactful to them. BK Chaplain Fr. Martin Raj said Mass for the group upon our arrival. After Mass, Lauren Weedon Hopkins, BK Class of 1995 and Regional Director of Catholic Charities, welcomed us and shared some information about the work of Catholic Charities. Teachers and staff toured the Basilica, the offices of Catholic Charities, the St. Francis Soup Kitchen, and some even helped assemble bags of food for distribution to families in need. The feedback from the faculty was gratifying and, since then, many have come up with even more ways for our students to assist with this important work. Anniversaries are important occasions and it is only with the help of many friends that we are able to make Bishop Kenny High School’s 65th a meaningful celebration. I thank Sr. Cathy Bitzer, SSJ at the Diocesan archives in St. Augustine who was a wonderful resource in our search for additional information about Bishop William J. Kenny. Among the items Sister was able to help us with was a particular image, the Bishop’s Coat of Arms, and motto. The motto was Fide et Virtute, By Faith and Virtue – how appropriate for our school and our students as we strive to prepare them not only for college, but also for faith-filled lives of service. Sincerely,

Cover Story

Founders’ Mass Bishop Kenny High School is 65 years old this school year! Central Catholic High School, as it was originally known, opened its doors to 395 students on September 2, 1952. Our street banners and logo have been adjusted to reflect this milestone and, because it is so important that we preserve and share the history of our school, it was determined that a Founders’ Mass would be the perfect addition to our school’s annual calendar. With our history in mind, and in the spirit of celebration, we gathered together on September 8 for Bishop Kenny’s inaugural Founders’ Mass. Students, faculty, staff, and invited guests gathered in the John Baldwin Athletic Center to do the one thing that has been at the central core of our school and its mission for 65 years – we gathered together in prayer.

important guests including Father Mike Williams ‘57, the first graduate of BK to be ordained to the priesthood, Father Michael Houle ‘71, BK’s longest-serving President, Father Terry Morgan ‘67 former BK religion teacher, and BK’s chaplain, Fr. Where did they put the library? Katherine Kelly Moody, ’97, Director of the Demetree Learning Commons, (center) greeted graduates as they toured the 200 building. Principal Todd Orlando was happy to show the alumni the recently renovated former library and eagerly shared information about the improvements; especially the impact of technology on student learning.

Athletic Director Mark Thorson walked with some of the guest to tour the Roger Strickland Field House and BK Crusader Football Stadium. The alumni shared stories of the early years at BK when there was no gymnasium or stadium facility.

The following is the text of the plaque that has been installed in the hallway of the 200 building adjacent to the main office. It is important that our students, parents, and visitors to campus have an opportunity to learn about this most significant man for whom our school is named.

The Most Reverend William J. Kenny William John Kenny was born in upstate New York in 1853. At the age of 19 he enrolled in St. Bonaventure College at Allegany, New York. It was during his years of study at St. Bonaventure that he accepted God’s call to the priesthood. After completing his theological studies, he petitioned the Bishop of St. Augustine for acceptance into the diocese. Bishop John Moore received him and ordained him to the priesthood on January 15, 1879. In June of 1884, he was appointed by Bishop Moore as pastor of Immaculate Conception, the only Catholic Church in Jacksonville. In 1888 an epidemic of yellow fever struck the city of Jacksonville. More than five-thousand people became seriously ill and more than 400 died. Fr. Kenny brought the sacraments and much comfort to those suffering at home and in hospitals. Fr. Kenny, himself, became ill and because he was the only Catholic priest in Jacksonville, Bishop Moore came from St. Augustine to the parish of the Immaculate Conception while Fr. Kenny recuperated. In 1901, a spark from a stove in the LaVilla area of Jacksonville started a devastating fire. When it was over, 8,677 people were homeless and 466 acres of the city including 2,368 buildings were destroyed. The city of Jacksonville was in ruins.

Founders’ Mass to be Annual Celebration The Founders’ Mass will be an annual event. It is an opportunity for students and graduates to come together for Mass and to celebrate the history of our school. Please understand that space limitations determine the number of alumni we are able to invite. This year the first four classes were invited and, next year the classes of 1957–1960 will be included. Bishop Kenny’s enrollment grew significantly from the 1960s forward. As such, each year we will look at the number of graduates for whom we have addresses, calculate a manageable number of potential guests, and include individual classes accordingly. Over time, all classes will be invited to join us at Mass followed by a casual reception and campus tour. Thanks for your patience, we look forward to seeing you at a future Founders’ Mass.

The St. Augustine Record reported, “The gigantic task of relieving the distress resulting from the disaster called for men of exceptional ability, and Fr. Kenny’s services were eagerly accepted. His calm, clear judgment and excellent advice were accepted by the leading businessmen all through the trying days that followed and, through his efforts, the merciful work was greatly simplified. Bishop Moore died two months after the great fire, and on March 25, 1902, Fr. Kenny was appointed by Pope Leo XIII to be the third Bishop of St. Augustine. He was the first American-born to hold that position. On May 18, 1902, Father William Kenny received Episcopal consecration through the hands of James Cardinal Gibbons, Archbishop of Baltimore. This sacred rite took place in the Cathedral in St. Augustine and the crowds spilled beyond the church. A special train had been arranged to carry the crowds from Jacksonville. Bishop Kenny’s time as Bishop of St. Augustine was productive and free from any additional great tragedies or disasters. On October 25, 1913 the Diocese of St. Augustine received the stunning news that its beloved Bishop, who had traveled north for a series of speaking engagements, had died of a heart attack in Baltimore on the previous day. His remains were returned to St. Augustine and his funeral Mass was celebrated on October 29, 1913. He was laid to rest in San Lorenzo Cemetery. He was succeeded in office by the young priest whom he had recruited only 10 years earlier, Bishop Michael J. Curley.

Bishop Kenny graduate H. James Towey delivered the first reading at the Canonization of Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta on September 4 at St. Peter’s Square in Rome. Thousands of people attended the canonization which is considered to be a major event of the Jubilee Year of Mercy. Mr. Towey, who serves as President of Ave Maria University located near Naples, Florida, became friends with Mother Teresa in the mid-1980s and later served as her legal counsel in the United States. According to the Ave Maria University website, “Mr. Towey was a full-time volunteer for her St. Teresa of Calcutta for two years, living with her order of priests in their seminary in Tijuana, Mexico, and caring for the dying in her home for people with AIDS in Washington. Mr. Towey was a member of the official delegations sent by the President of the United States for both Mother Teresa’s funeral in Calcutta in 1997, and her beatification at St. Peter’s Basilica in 2003.” After graduating from Bishop Kenny High School in 1974 Mr. Towey earned both undergraduate and law degrees from Florida State University. The FSU Alumni Association recognized him as one of the top 100 graduates of the century. Mr. Towey has received many other honors, including the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal from His Holiness Pope John Paul II, and six honorary doctorate degrees. Mr. Towey was the graduation speaker for the Bishop Kenny Class of 1995. We congratulate this distinguished member of the BK Community on this important honor.

Betty and Noody Lewis Scholarship at Bishop Kenny High School There aren’t a lot of people who have had an attachment to Bishop Kenny High School for as long as Betty Saleeba Lewis has. In the late 1940s Betty’s father, Tom Saleeba, a successful Catholic businessman in Jacksonville was approached by Archbishop Joseph Hurley looking for help with a project. The Diocese was planning to build Central Catholic High School in Jacksonville. As Betty remembers, “the Bishop was in need of some assistance from the community and, of course, my father wanted to help the Bishop in any way he could.” And, as they say, the rest is history. Central Catholic High School was built with the help of Tom Saleeba and many other faithful Catholic families. The school opened its doors on September 2, 1952. Not only did Tom Saleeba help get the project done, he later became President of the BK Dad’s Club. Betty found her father’s lapel pin in its original box in a drawer at home and Principal Todd Orlando, Betty Lewis and Betty’s granddaughter called to see if we and graduate of the Class of 2016 Catherine Maige. Betty presentwould like to have it. ed Mr. Orlando with an important addition to the BK Archives. She thought that it would make a nice addition to the school’s archives. We are thrilled to have it! Later, Betty and her now deceased husband Noody Lewis were involved at BK while their children attended school here. Betty even served on the Advisory School Board at the invitation of Msgr. Dan Logan. Since her husband’s passing in 1990, Betty has maintained a keen interest in the school and has watched three of her grandchildren thrive at the school her father helped to build over 65 years ago.

We have Mrs. Betty Lewis to thank for this original 1952 Bishop Kenny Dad’s Club lapel pin. A great piece of BK memorabilia.

Recently, Betty reached out to the Office of Advancement to talk about the future of the school and to discuss a way that the Lewis Family could continue their support and involvement now that her last grandchild, a member of the Class of 2016 had graduated. After several conversations and a meeting to talk about goals and guidelines, the Betty and Noody Lewis Scholarship at Bishop Kenny High School was born. “When we talked about the scholarship, Betty was very clear about her wishes,” said Sheila Marovich Director of Advancement. “She wanted the faithfilled Catholic education that her children and grandchildren had been so fortunate to have made available to a family that would otherwise be unable to provide it. She just wants to give someone a helping hand.” The first recipient of this most generous gift is enrolled as a freshman this year. Her tuition, fees, and even an iPad have been paid for by the Betty and Noody Scholarship at Bishop Kenny High School. The entire Bishop Kenny community thanks Mrs. Lewis for this most generous gift.

Bob West Inducted into FHSAA Hall of Fame Bob West, longtime Director of Athletics, is a 2016 inductee into the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Hall of Fame. The association selected Coach West, as he is known to two generations of Bishop Kenny athletes, after excelling as both a baseball coach and administrator for more than three decades. On their website, the FHSAA characterized West as “one of the most successful baseball coaches and directors of athletics in FHSAA history.” The award was presented at a dinner in September. During 23 years as head coach of the Crusader baseball program, Bob West amassed an impressive 532-129 overall record including the 2002 State Championship, 10 trips to the Final Four and 16 district titles. West coached seven nationally-ranked teams, had 75 players sign baseball scholarships, and saw seven of his team members earn player-of-the-year honors. Six players went on to play Major League Baseball, two were named All-Americans, and 21 more earned All-State honors. During his coaching career Coach West was recognized by his peers on many occasions. He was named the American Baseball Coaches Association Southeastern Coach of the Year; he was a two-time Florida Coach of the Year, the Florida Dairy Farmers Coach of the Year, and an eight-time District Coach of the Year. FHSAA Hall of Fame Inductee Bob West is one of the most successful baseball coaches and directors of athletics in FHSAA history. Coach West holds a 532-129 record as a baseball coach and, since 1989, as AD has won 25 state titles and added eight sports to the BK athletic program.

In 1989 Father Michael Houle invited Bob West to serve as BK’s Athletic Director, a position he held until his retirement in May of this year. Since 1989 twenty-five state championships representing various boys’ and girls’ teams have been earned, eight sports have been added to the athletic program and, most notably, BK’s Athletic Program was named the Class 4A FHSAA Program of the Year three times. Also, since 1989, more than $5 million worth of improvements to BK’s athletic facilities have been completed. The Athletic Program also earned three FHSAA Overall Academic Team Championships Awards, two FHSAA Sportsmanship Awards, and two student-athletes were named FHSAA ScholarAthlete of the Year award winners. Over the course of the last 12 years, 78% of Bishop Kenny student-athletes have yielded a GPA of 3.0 or better. For the past 14 years West served in various leadership positions within the Florida High School Athletic Association, serving on the Board of Directors from 2007-14 and as the President during the 2013-14 school year. West served as an associate scout for the Atlanta Braves, Miami Marlins, and Baltimore Orioles, and is also is a member of the FHSAA Urban/Rural Committee. A lifetime member of the American Baseball Association, the FIAAA (Florida Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association) member also established a sports medicine program that serves all of BK’s athletes with the Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute. The program has been used as a model throughout the state. The BK family congratulates Bob West on this tremendous honor.

AUCTION REPORT

30th Anniversary Auction

T

he BK Boosters Auction is always a special event, but this year was exceptional. Spirits were high as we celebrated 30 years of auctions – all benefitting the athletic and extra-curricular programs at Bishop Kenny High School. The event, which was held on April 9, was a sell-out. Over 520 guests were in attendance. Nearly every item in every category was sold and, at the end of the night, $130,000 was raised, bringing the 30-year total profit from the auction to nearly $2.3 million! Best of all, the people who started it all – our auction founders – were in attendance, as our guests. It was so nice for them to come back and spend an evening reminiscing about the early years of the auction and all of the hard work they did to get this important fundraiser off the ground! We were fortunate to have a chilled bottle of champagne at each table as our beautiful 30th anniversary centerpiece this year. Our thanks to Dave Merrill of CoventBridge for making it possible for every table to share a special toast to the 30 years of successful BK auctions – CHEERS!

Auction guests Max and Denise Clark seen here with Principal Todd Orlando and BK Boosters President Anthony Parete, generously donated the money won in the 50/50 drawing to the BK Boosters! Our thanks is extended, once again, to Max and Denise.

This year’s proceeds will be used for, among other things, the third of five payments on the BK Boosters $100,000 pledge to the stadium improvements completed two years ago. Other uses for the money include paying the cost of post-season team transportation, team uniforms, equipment, and a myriad of other financial requests yet to be imagined! This year marked the 18th year in a row that our friends at Carrabba’s Italian Grill provided a delicious buffet dinner featuring chicken marsala and steak marsala to a hungry auction crowd. Every item is freshly cooked and beautifully presented to more than 520 hungry guests. Following dinner, auction-goers enjoyed the delicious ice cream desserts donated by the Devenny family, owners of Bruster’s Ice Cream. We thank the Devennys, all of whom are BK graduates, for their continued generosity to the auction. The auction is not only successful in raising funds to help defray costs and underwrite projects to enhance the quality of extracurricular and athletic programs for our students, but it also brings volunteers together. It requires months of planning and a committee of at least 100 parents and friends of BK to put it all together. Volunteers, old and new, are always needed, so please keep your eyes peeled for meeting notices and announcements about auction work days – and don’t forget to mark your calendar and plan to join us on auction night.

Michael Durcan ’60 volunteered for service on auction night. Upon arrival he spotted volunteers delivering champagne to the guest tables and in true BK spirit, jumped right in to help! Thanks, Michael…we hope to see you at Auction 2017!

Our thanks is extended to all of the people, past and present, who have been a part of the auction’s growth and ask that all of our alumni, parents, and friends help make this event continue to thrive, well into the future.

More than 500 guests gathered for the 30th Annual Auction. The paddles were raised high and virtually every item was sold in the live and silent categories by the end of the night.

Volunteers April Bradley, Cheryl O’Connor and Kathy Parete sold 161 bottles of wine in 37 minutes at The Wine Shoppe…another record broken!

Mr. Luman Beasley, our very skilled auctioneer, did it again! The live auction was a huge success. Please contact Luman if you have the need for the services of a great auctioneer.

Auction Item Proceeds Impact STEM Curriculum

30 Years ago these volunteers had a great idea. Meet our Auction Founders (Seated L-R) Lou Trad, Verne Altenbaugh (our 1st auctioneer), Carol Cook Altenbaugh ‘59, and Jeanne Earley. (Standing L-R) Jim and Nancy Culp, Betty Nackashi Trad ‘57, Brian Earley, and M. Teresa Rahaim Nolan ‘58.

Longtime auction donor Charles Frisina ‘76 made a special request associated with his auction donation this year. Charles has donated a one-week vacation at his home on St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands for several years. This year he asked if the proceeds from the sale of the vacation package could be used to further the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) curriculum at Bishop Kenny. The academic department was thrilled with the idea and promptly ordered two Dremel 3D Idea Builder printers. 3D printing technology provides an introduction to workforce skills which may impact students discerning college majors and careers. With these printers, students apply concepts learned in the classroom by building tangible, practical products, enabling them to grasp the relationship between what they are studying and their everyday lives. Additionally, the collaboration of our math, science, and arts teachers allows us to integrate Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) skills into many areas of our curriculum. We have also expanded our course offerings by adding AP Computer Science Principles and Experimental Science – classes which enable students to delve even deeper into developing STEM-related skills. We are most grateful to Charles Frisina for his continued generous support of the auction. If anyone reading this has a special project they would like to help fund by way of an auction donation, please contact Sheila Marovich in the Office of Advancement at 398-7545.

NJROTC parents did another fantastic job handling two bars and serving auction guests at the 30th annual auction.

sneak peek Jaguar Seats

What’s coming up In Auction 2017? How about this pair of stadium seats from Everbank Field? Not only are these seats a great memento for a real fan, they’re autographed by many of the players too!

Our Everbank Field seats come complete with a framed certificate of authenticity.

AUCTION 2016 Three Cheers for Bortles and Jaguars It didn’t take long for the “Blake Bortles Meet & Greet” to exceed the expectations of brothers Collin and Riley Osborne, and Riley’s Bishop Kenny classmate and friend, Logan Macomb, when the three were guests of the Jaguars at their minicamp session on June 14. Lee and Scarlett Osborne bought the exclusive item at this year’s Bishop Kenny auction. Collin, Riley and Logan anticipated meeting the Jaguars’ star quarterback at the conclusion of the two-hour morning practice. Bortles, however, surprised them by coming over to the sideline prior to the start of the session. He signed Riley and Logan’s No. 5 jerseys and Collins’ Jaguars cap. Afterward, Bortles returned to take pictures with the guys. The three fans are excited about the prospects for a winning record in 2016 after getting a close-up look at the Jaguars – especially the talented 2016 draft class and free-agent signees. “Getting a first-hand look at how smoothly the practices are starting gives me confidence that this will be a great season for our team,” said Collin, who attended Fletcher High and the University of Florida. He’ll soon be starting lab rotations in glioblastoma formation as part of his Ph.D in the Genetics Program at Texas A&M. As for Riley, now a junior at BK, his take on the Jaguars is similar to his brother’s. “Practice was fun to watch and it gave us an early look at the Jaguars new players and how they fit with the team,” Riley said. Logan, also entering his junior year, said, “It's a great and fun experience to meet the players and coaches of the hometown team. It's really exciting for any fan of the Jaguars and especially for me.” The auction item was coordinated by the Jaguars public relations department and BK Boosters member Joe DeSalvo of The Florida Times-Union.

CLASS OF 2016 Graduation Week 2016

64th Graduating Class of BKHS raduation week is full of activities for members of

Gthe senior class and their families to enjoy. The activities begin with an Awards Program and Reception on Thursday night at the University of North Florida. Graduation Mass is held the following day at St. Joseph Church in Mandarin, and the week concludes on Saturday morning with commencement exercises at the University of North Florida. A class snapshot would tell you that the Class of 2016 is made up of 288 graduates; 100% of whom were accepted to college. The class earned $12.1 million dollars in college scholarships and performed 65,687 hours of community service during their high school careers.

Senior Awards The Senior Awards Program, held at the University of North Florida, saw students gather to collect more than 500 certificates, trophies, scholarships, medals, appointments, and even a few oversized presentation checks! Many knew why they had been invited, and others were surprised when their names were called to accept special awards. A complete list of all of the scholarships and awards presented to the Class of 2016 is printed in this publication.

Graduation Mass Graduation Mass, which is held at St. Joseph’s Church in Mandarin, is always a special event as it marks the final time that classmates will attend Mass as a group. This year’s celebrant was Msgr. Vincent Haut, a graduate of the BK Class of 1960. Msgr. Vincent Haut, Class of 1960

Eucharistic Ministers served at Graduation Mass.

BK Alum Addresses the Class of 2016 Bishop Kenny graduate John Rivers ’84, founder of the very successful 4Rivers Smokehouse chain, delivered this year’s graduation address. What was his message to the Class of 2016? There’s a difference between being successful and being significant. Students and guests listened intently as Rivers told his story of being a successful healthcare industry executive who, after an early retirement, realized that he was happier doing something that he was passionate about than he had ever been doing something that simply paid him a lot of money. For John, passion translated to his Barbecue Ministry which involved smoking meat and cooking out of his garage to raise money for a variety of causes in his own backyard. In John’s words, “True happiness is found when our actions align with our passion.” He also shared that, “Keeping God at the center of what you are doing will lead you to your success.” We couldn’t agree more.

Commencement The week concluded with the 64th commencement exercises of Bishop Kenny High School. The ceremony was held bright and early on Saturday, May 21 at the University of North Florida. Mr. John Rivers, a member of the Bishop Kenny Class of 1984, delivered the customary address to the graduates, and Bishop Felipe Estévez presented diplomas to each proud graduate.

Superintendent of Catholic Schools Deacon Scott Conway, graduation speaker John Rivers ’84, Bishop Felipe Estévez, and Principal Todd Orlando gathered backstage at UNF before commencement exercises in May.

Senior Awards 2016 he Senior Awards Program is one of the highlights of graduation week. Held at the University of North Florida, parents of seniors come to watch their students as they are called forward to accept the many scholarships, service awards, and other presentations made at the program. Vice-Principal Mary DeSalvo served as emcee of this year’s ceremony. After welcoming the assembled parents, students, and special guests, Mrs. DeSalvo turned the program over to Mr. Scott Sberna who introduced Student Council President Jeff Southerland to begin the program with a prayer.

Bishop Kenny High School welcomed a film crew and producers from NBC’s TODAY Show to campus in May. The crew was at BK to film a story about the Firehouse Foundation’s work with Connie Namey, mother of Michael Namey ‘15. The goal of the collaboration between the Namey family and the Firehouse Foundation is threefold. First, according to Connie Namey who was filmed outside of the Paul Tanner Chapel for the segment, is education and awareness; secondly, CPR and AED training in an effort to save lives in an emergency and, finally, to provide AED units to schools and other organizations. The segment which features BK students in a training session in the John Baldwin Athletic Center aired in June. It can still be seen by visiting the Firehouse Subs website and clicking on the Press Room link.

NJROTC Cadets Attend Service Academy Summer Sessions

Cadet Isabella Horning is in the second row receiving military instruction at the US Air Force Academy.

Cadet Jaelyn Reyes is in the second row, third from the left, at the US Naval Academy Track and Field Program

BK NJROTC Unit Operations Officer Jaelyn Reyes ’17 and Isabella Horning ’17, Command Senior Chief, were invited to attend programs at the Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, and West Point over the summer. After high school, both Isabella and Jaelyn hope to attend one of these service academies.

briefs in the evenings.” In the academic workshops Isabella built a rocket and learned about organic chemistry. The hardest day was the “Mock Beast” because Isabella and the other participants were treated like basic cadets. According to Isabella, her favorite experiences were participating in the obstacle course and touring the airfield.

Isabella was able to attend week-long programs at both West Point and the Air Force Academy. According to Isabella, “At West Point each day began with physical training at 4:30 a.m. After that, they had various other activities such as briefs and academic workshops.” Isabella went to the Chemistry, Leadership, and Ethics Workshops. After dinner each night the squads competed against each other in games including basketball, football, and dodgeball.

Jaelyn Reyes took part in a Track and Field Program at the Naval Academy. Jaelyn reported, “Cadets woke up at 6:00 a.m. and practiced until 10:00 p.m., with a break to eat and do calisthenics in between.” She learned various skills and techniques used in track events and took part in jumps, throws, sprints, and hurdles.

At the Air Force Academy Isabella reports, “The days were filled with physical training in the morning, academic workshops after breakfast, and

Both cadets reported that they made many friends and created bonds that will last a lifetime. Additionally, the experience has helped them decide which academy they would like to attend for college.

SAIL ACADEMY

NJROTC cadets from Bishop Kenny and other schools are eager to learn the basics of sailing at the NJROTC annual Sail Academy program.

NJROTC Leadership Academy Each year cadets from the BK NJROTC Unit have the opportunity to participate in the Area Twelve Sail Academy at Naval Air Station (NAS) Jacksonville. This year’s program was held from June 12-17. Cadets Jaelyn Reyes and Dylan Jones had the opportunity to participate at this enjoyable and fun learning academy.

Throughout the week the cadets learned various techniques used in sailing. On the first day, the two learned about safety, rules and regulations of sailing, and also how to tie a few knots. The second day consisted of a swim test. The remaining days were spent sailing on the water. They sailed in the morning and in the afternoon, with lunch in between. It wasn’t all sailing. After a long day of sailing, the instructors gave the cadets a chance to have fun at night – bowling, watching a movie, or going to the Jacksonville Suns baseball game.

Graduation for Sail Academy was held at Orange Park High School. For outstanding performance during the academy, Cadet Jones was recognized as an Honor Cadet and a chance to return as a cadre next year. Cadres are cadets that assist the instructors in the training process. Overall, the two cadets had a great time and would go sailing again in a heartbeat.

Each summer the Bishop Kenny NJROTC Unit sends a select group of cadets to a weeklong Leadership Academy held at Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Georgia. The cadets receive training that they bring back to Bishop Kenny to share with the Unit. The goal is to assist the cadets in becoming better leaders. Four cadets, Liam O’Connell-Becker, Miles Bright, Jordan Thomas, and Juan Moreno, attended the program held in June. Kyle Leonard, Unit Commanding Officer who graduated from the Leadership Academy in 2015, returned as a cadre which is a cadet who assists the instructors. The Leadership Academy, which can be described as both rewarding and stressful, is a great opportunity for the cadets and the Unit. Attendees participate in physical training, academic testing, and drill execution. They are pushed and tested, particularly in areas where they were weak. Each persevered and, now that Leadership Academy is over, they can appreciate all that they learned and can pass on that information onto their fellow students. Members of the Class of 2017 who have trained to become Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion will serve the BK Community throughout their senior year.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Installed

S

eventy-three members of the senior class will serve the BK community as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion throughout this school year. The Department of Campus Ministry coordinated the preparation of the students for this important ministry last spring. The installation of students took place in May so that the students were ready to serve the BK Community upon their return to school. BK Chaplain, Father Martin Raj, OSB presided at the Installation. Also installed was Mr. Timothy McEvoy, a member of the Mathematics Department. Deacon Robert De Luca assisted as the Deacon of the Word and Table. The Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion received the faculty from Bishop Felipe Estévez to assist with the distribution of communion whenever it seems necessary for the pastoral benefit of the faithful and whenever sufficient numbers of priests, deacons, or installed acolytes are not available. During his homily, Father Martin encouraged the candidates for installation to be good examples of Christian living in faith and in conduct and to strive to grow in holiness through regular reception of the sacraments of Confession and the Eucharist and to strive to read the Sacred Scriptures daily. The newly installed Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion received a blessed Father Martin Raj blesses newly installed Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at a ceremony held in the Performing Arts Center.

Head Coach: Mark Thorson Season Record: 6-5 Number of members on team: 59 Districts, Tournaments: District Runner-up All-First Coast Selection: Zach Gushanas – Honorable Mention Percentage of seniors planning to attend college: 100% Coach’s Comments: The Bishop Kenny football team completed another successful season in 2015 by qualifying for the state playoffs for the seventh year in a row in Class 5A. The Crusaders fought their way to a 6 and 4 regular season record winning their final three games to secure a runner-up finish in the final district standings. The 2015 season came to a close with a loss to Suwannee in the first round of the State Playoffs. The 2015 season highlights included a resounding win over Westside followed by a hard fought victory over rival Baker County in week 4. In week 10, the Crusaders truly showed their mettle by grinding out a last second victory over Terry Parker, which punched BK’s ticket to the state playoffs. The 2015 team said farewell to 17 outstanding seniors who have amassed a 35 and 12 record over the past four seasons including two district championships. The Crusaders return a strong group of underclassmen that have their sights set on getting back to the top of the district standings under new Head Coach Bobby Raulerson. The 2015 team had several individual players that received post-season recognition and awards. Senior running back Zachary Gushanas was named to the Florida Times Union’s All-First Coast Honorable Mention squad. Senior wide receiver Julian Ingram and junior offensive tackle Bruce Aubley were both named to the FACA All-District team. The 2015 Bishop Kenny JV and Freshman football teams also had successful seasons. Both teams were able to gain invaluable experience with many players getting their first taste of tackle football. These future Crusaders with benefit greatly from this experience as they move up to the varsity level. The Crusader program continues to have strong numbers with 113 boys participating in 2015. The future of Kenny Football looks bright with a number of exciting underclassmen ready to excel in 2016.

The team was led by sophomore Nathan Jubran who placed 4th overall in the Class 2A State Championship Meet, and whose season best time of 15:58:99 was the 2nd fastest time in school history for a sophomore. Nathan was joined on varsity by an incredible, sub 17:00, senior pack comprised of Mason Gerry, Beau Butler, and Eric Chiotti. The varsity State Meet team was rounded out by sophomore JP Kazcorowski, senior Adam Bibeault, and junior Gabe Nackashi. Look for a young, sophomore and junior heavy team to return to 2016 with hopes of claiming another podium spot and continuing the Tradition of Excellence for which Bishop Kenny athletics is known.

After weeks of preparation, 30 of them made their way to the mountains of North Carolina for the Brevard Distance Running Camp. By the time they returned to the flatlands of Florida, they were ready to begin their 2015 campaign in earnest. Freshman runners Janie Citrano and Julia Fletcher made a near immediate impact on the team as they worked their way into the top 10 in quick fashion. They were accompanied by a slew of sophomores: Emma Jane Warren, Renee Rowland, Allison Nasrallah, Allison Grula, Ashley Alvarez-Stratton, MJ Parliment, and Yali Miller who regularly battled for their spot on the varsity team. The squad pushed their way through the post season where they advanced to the FHSAA 2A State Championship. The team was led by junior Grace Gerry who finished 8th overall in the state. Close behind was fellow junior Maeghan Holzbaur. Senior Haley Grayson contributed her experience and performance by rounding out the top five. She will continue on with her cross country career running for the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey. With perseverance and hard work, the team continued on with its Tradition of Excellence!

The team was led by six seniors - Brenna Edwards, Rachel Rukab, Nicole Najem, Ila Elstein, Kaki Freel, and Aubrie Lombardo who combined for a total of 151 Aces, 530 kills, 713 digs and 192 blocks. After winning the State Championship last season it was the ultimate goal to repeat history for these six seniors and, even though they didn’t win gold, they pushed themselves on and off the court to enable the team to return to the State Final match. Outside hitter, Rachel Rukab led the team in kills with 186 and was 2nd in digs with 219 and was named to the 1st Team All-First Coast. Rightside and middle hitter Ila Elstein was 2nd in kills with 146 and had an impressive 84 blocks and 101 digs and was also named to the 1st Team All-First Coast. As the players demonstrated through hard work, dedication and determination, anything is possible. Additionally, we are very proud to announce that Ila Elstein, Aubrie Lombardo and Rachel Rukab will be continuing their volleyball careers in college. Ila Elstein will be attending Montreat College, Aubrie Lombardo will be attending Oglethorpe University and Rachel Rukab will be attending Belmont Abbey. Mikayla Martin dove consistently and superbly throughout the season, including clinching the 4th place title at State, just missing the podium stand. The goal was to improve each match and peak for the end of the season competition. BK played outstanding golf and dominated the Districts winning the championship by a large margin. BK finished third in the Regional Championship just missing qualifying for the state tournament by a couple of strokes. Seniors Jake Franco, Carter Bowe, Theo Morrill, and

Chase Turknett provided the team with leadership and stability. John Tucker (10th) was leading scorer on the team. John had a season average of 38.7 for nine holes and shot a 71 at Districts. Jack Pues (10th) was the second leading scorer on the team. Blake Parker (11th) improved dramatically during the season. Blake shot a 79 and 80 to finish off his season. Preston Johnson (11th) played solid golf all season long. The four underclassmen will return next year and provide a solid foundation for a run to the state tournament.

Getting off to a tremendous start, the team began the year 18-0, including winning the prestigious Kreul Classic Christmas Tournament in Coral Springs, defeating state ranked team South Miami and Archbishop Carroll in the process. Ranked #1 or #2 in Class 5A for much of the season, the Crusaders played two tremendous games against eventual 4A State Champion Bolles before sell-out crowds. Strong defensive efforts throughout the playoffs enabled the team to win its school record 4th consecutive District Championship, defeating Ribault in the championship game. After defeating Baker County and Wolfson in the first two regional games, the team hosted Tallahassee Godby for the Regional Final. Played before another packed house, the Crusaders used a tremendous team effort to defeat the Cougars 54-51 in a game that came down to the final possession. Excited students, parents, and alums celebrated and stormed the court as they celebrated their return to the Final Four. Over 500 fans, including eight busloads of students, traveled to the Lakeland Center to support the team in their game against Tampa Jesuit, also their opponent in their last Final Four appearance (2013). It was another tremendous game which went down to the wire, this time with Bishop Kenny prevailing 55-54. The victory propelled the team into its first appearance in the State Championship game since 1962. With another great crowd on hand, the team fought extremely hard but could not overcome an excellent Poinciana team in the final game. Overall, the Crusaders provided memories for the Bishop Kenny community that will last for many years to come. Our players also had a very successful year off the court as well, being recognized by the FHSAA consecutive season as an Academic Team Champion in boys’ basketball for having an average GPA of over 3.0. The 2015-16 Crusaders were led by Christian Carlyle, Chris Joyce, Grayson Roth, Kendall Mitchum, Lou Larmoyeux, Gabe Merete, and Adam Bowenschulte. The strong supporting cast included Matt Capobianco, Jordan Lezama, Max Propes, Sean Braswell, Rady Devenny, George Mendez, and Dwight Holmes. Manager Rylan Elstein provided great support for the team all season long as well. Our senior class leaves a legacy of hard work and determination, and we know they continue to do great things in their future endeavors. Our underclassmen gained valuable experience all year and will look to continue our strong tradition of playing hard, playing smart, and playing together.

Bishop Kenny welcomed first year head coach Charlsea Clark to the program and the physical education department. Under Clark, the program finished with a regular season record of 11-14. The girls were eliminated from the district tournament by Ribault High School in the second round of district play finishing with an overall record of 12-15. This past year for Clark was about laying the groundwork for a lasting program. Wins and losses were secondary to building a culture that embodies professionalism on and off the court, relentless commitment, athletic and academic integrity, and a strong competitive and coachable spirit. This year’s roster included six seniors. Rachel Rukab, Nicole Marchigiano, Emily Bateh, Brenna Edwards, Maria Parker, and Jade King all provided great mentorship to the underclassmen in the program. On the court the girls’ were led by Rachel Rukab, Isa Horning, Jade King, and Kobe Jones. The returning players are just finishing 4.5 weeks of post season workouts that included 6:00AM strength and conditioning sessions, 3 times per week. Coach Clark is very pleased with the commitment level during post season, and she is very excited to continue building for 20162017 this summer.

The team of 12 girls made from the JV and Varsity squads had a history-making season. They placed 2nd at the Providence Cheer Challenge just a week before becoming the Region 1 runner-up champions, bringing home their first piece of FHSAA hardware in years. The small Varsity team advanced straight to FHSAA State Finals with their impressive placing and score at Regionals. They went up against five other teams from across the state. The team is looking forward to next season and getting closer to the state title.

scoring 108 goals during the course of the season while allowing 48 goals by opponents. The aggressive attacking – pressing style of play the Crusaders are becoming known for proved very difficult for most of the team’s opponents to counter. This season the BK boys’ soccer schedule exceeded last season’s difficulty of schedule by an order of magnitude. Of the 26 matches played, our opponents included 5 teams ranked in the top 10 in the nation, 6 opponents were Regional finalists, 12 additional were Regional Quarterfinalists, and 12 District Champions in classes larger than Bishop Kenny’s 2A. Led by a core of returning seniors David Bishop, Seba Moreno, and Jake Franco, who were also this year’s Captains, anchored a very strong defense that was the sparkplug of BK’s overwhelming attack. Complementing this group of seniors was a number of returning juniors John Darling, Charlie Wilkinson, Jack McVearry, Seamus Maher, Mason Martin, Gabe Nackashi, Elijah Mincey, Ryan Meisler and transfer student Tony Adams. Our sophomore class also added significant contributions to this successful season including Luka Gjuraj, Camilo Ramirez, Joe Kinney, Nick Sikorski, Matt Brust, Evan Dry, Angel Gjergi, and Patrick Kiely. The team began the season with a one-day retreat at Marywood – the focus being on the equation of Person>Player. We implemented a new program on Moral and Performance development as described in the book “What Drives Winning,” focusing on the moral and performance skills that make us who we are and how we become the best versions of ourselves that we can be and how we display those on and off the field. We also focused on how to begin developing the moral and performance skills that each player committed to. We also included the girls’ team at the retreat and, hopefully, these lessons will stay with our players as they continue to develop. The start of the season was a learning experience for the squad – going 2-3-1 in the first 6 matches and giving up 16 goals and scoring only 9 goals. While the opponents included Bartram (Win), Creekside (Loss), Fletcher (Loss) and Nease (Loss) (a tour of North St. Johns County) it allowed the Crusaders to work out our challenges prior to beginning district play. We finally found our stride at the beginning or our district play with a 7-0 win over Bishop Snyder and went on a 7 game winning streak, scoring 49 goals while only allowing 2 goals to be scored against them. At the end of the streak BK had clinched the District at 6-0 in District Play.

Prior to Christmas, the Crusaders traveled to Tampa to play Berkeley Prep (ranked 3rd in 2A and 12th in the state) and Tampa Jesuit (ranked 2nd in 3A and 8th in the nation). The matches were hard fought and the Crusaders split winning 3-1 over Berkeley Prep and dropping a close 3-1 loss to Tampa Jesuit. The experience was great for the team to continue its development and growth both on and off the field. Just after the Christmas Holiday the team loaded up and drove to Miami for two very significant matches against St Thomas Aquinas (ranked 6th in 4A and 11th in the State) and Belen Jesuit (ranked 1st in 4A, 2nd in the State, 3rd in the Nation and the eventual 4A State Champion). While the result with STA ended in a 3-3 track meet, the match with Belen the next day was a beautiful example of the game. While BK lost 2-1 to a very strong opponent, it was the best match to date played by the team. Now it was time to set its sights on the District Championship. With a 1st place seeding, having posted a perfect 6-0 record in the District, the Crusaders faced Bishop Snyder in the District Semifinal and walked away with an 9-1 victory to set up a strong final against Episcopal. The final proved to be a very hard fought battle that saw the BK scoring machine struggle with the Episcopal defense. BK only allowed Episcopal 4 shots on goal while tallying 15 of its own – the net eluded BK for most of the match. In the end a 1-0 BK win would be enough to win its second straight District Championship. The Crusaders playoff run continued against West Nassau in the Regional Quarterfinal. West Nassau put in a tremendous effort – they could not stop the BK attack which tallied 8 goals allowing none and controlling the ball 80% of the match. As the Crusaders moved forward to the Regional Semifinal, it would again face Episcopal for the 3rd time this season. The BK attack was in fine form securing a sound 3-1 win. As a result, the Crusaders were on to the Regional Final and traveled to Wakulla for its regional final against Wakulla High School. Again the BK attack was in fine form – controlling the ball 75%, 13 shots on goal and 6 goals. While Wakulla could only manage 4 shots on goal, they were able to snag 2 goals – leaving BK the Regional Champion in a 6-2 final. On to the State Final 4 for the Crusaders. The State Final Four was a new experience for the Crusaders since it has been years since a BK boys’ soccer team had made an appearance. BK would face Tampa Catholic in the State Semifinal. While it was a great learning experience for the team, it could not get its attack on track. While having 11 shots on goal for BK and allowing only 3 for Tampa Catholic, BK lost a very close match 2-1 to end its playoff quest. The future is very bright for the Crusaders in building outstanding soccer players and, more importantly, men.

It starts with our four seniors. I cannot begin to say how honored I am to be associated with these young women. Their determination and compassion is amazing. I think I speak for all of the soccer coaches when I say it is an honor to be associated with them. Anytime you have close to forty girls together for several months, there will be some differences. I am in awe of how well they have come together as a team. Nothing in life worthwhile comes easily. How hard the ladies work to come together is a skill they will take with them for all their future success. We lose four amazing seniors that will all go on to greater things in college. However, all have left a big hole to fill. We especially remember our two senior captains, Kaitlynn Himmelreich and Claire Self. In addition, the team started tutoring sessions to help a few struggling student-athletes maintain their grades. As the season progressed, the young team did well at the Tally Classic led by sophomores Jack Delaney and Josiah McCallum, and freshman Andrew Slade. The interaction of senior captain Kyle Black, along with his fellow teammates, was inspiring. With his leadership the team finished with a 16-4 dual meet record. Then they marched into the 1A District 4 Tournament as defending champions with the hopes of securing a 3rd consecutive district title. The District Tournament ended with Bishop Kenny having 9 finalists and a school record of moving 13 wrestlers to the Regional Tournament. At Regionals, the team was represented well by freshman Andrew Slade and sophomore Josiah McCallum. Sophomore Jack Delaney (4th) and captain Kyle Black (regional finalist) would move 38

During this streak, the team completed a successful Spring Break trip to the Florida panhandle and, at one point, won seven consecutive games. The highlight of the year was winning the Class 5A - District 3 Championship by beating Yulee in a thrilling eight inning game 11-8. The Crusaders went on to win the first round of the Region playoffs before losing in the Region Semi-finals. They finished the year with a District record of 10-2 and an overall mark of 19-9. The team was made up of a group of veteran seniors and juniors, as well as a few talented young sophomores and freshmen. Without a true superstar, contributions were made by virtually everyone throughout the roster during the year. The team batting average was a respectable .282. Will was one of the area’s dominant players at the number 1 singles position. Will plans to continue playing competitive tennis at LaGrange College. Alejandro and Joe made it to the district final as singles. Underclassmen Tyler Chin (11th) and David Maxson rounded out the starting lineup. Many key players graduated last year which was tough. However, we’re extremely blessed to have a large group of new players, most of whom are underclassmen. This year was great for the team because we were able to give some young players real on-court experience and room to grow. Sports continued from page 39 Coach’s Comments: The 2016 track season saw great performances from both the girls’ team and boys’ teams. At the Class 2A State Championship Track Meet, junior Grace Gerry placed 9th in the 800m run, and junior Ashton Lundy placed 8th in the Pole Vault. The boys had another impressive post-season, finishing 5th overall at the Class 2A State Meet. Four individuals qualified for the State Meet. Junior R’Lazon Brumfield placed 9th in the 200m dash, sophomore Nathan Jubran placed 5th in the 1600m run, senior Mason Gerry placed 3rd in the 800m run, and senior Seba Moreno placed 2nd in the Pole Vault. The biggest excitement of State Meet was, by far, the boys 4x800m Relay. Running from the “slow heat”, the boys 4x800 Relay was able to claim a State Championship title by defeating the best team in the “fast heat” by nearly 2 seconds. The relay team was led off by sophomore Nathan Jubran, followed by senior Eric Chiotti as the second leg, senior Adam Bibeault as the third leg, and anchored by senior Mason Gerry.

We are proud of the effort and growth our players have shown this year and look forward to the future with this group in the program. The varsity team finished the year with a 15-10 record and was undefeated in the district. We captured our first District title in eight years by defeating Yulee in the district championship game. The team capitalized on regular season district wins against #2 State ranked West Nassau and then against Yulee to earn the top seed in the district tournament. The team was ranked 3rd or 4th in the city each week in the batting average category, led by sophomore, Caroline DePirro who batted .543, seniors Natalie Hart with a .539, and Claire Doyle (Belmont Abbey signee) with a .534 average on the year. Junior Ally Schneider provided a consistent arm on the mound, finishing the year with a 7-44 record. Six seniors - Claire Doyle, Natalie Hart, Lola Houde, Meggan Gleneski, Patricia Bielamowicz and Hasley Pitman - served as the backbone of the program and will be greatly missed. ALUMNI & REUNIONS Michael Hartley ‘06 Ordained

It’s all in the family, Fr. Michael surrounded by his sisters (L-R) Rachel Hartley ’13 St Joseph’s Academy, Kelly Hartley Gelwicks BK ’06, Angela Hartley Biance BK ’99, and Amanda Hartley BK ‘97

ichael Hartley, a member of the BKHS Class of 2006, was ordained a priest of the Diocese of PensacolaTallahassee by Bishop Gregory Parkes this past June. Father Michael is from a long line of Bishop Kenny and Assumption school graduates. His late father Gene Hartley ‘75 and mother Tammy Vaughan Hartley Martin ‘77 and all four of his siblings are BK graduates.

M

Father Fred Parke invited Michael to celebrate his first Mass at Assumption and, so, Father Michael Hartley celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving at Assumption Catholic Church on Sunday, June 12. Many of his Assumption and Bishop Kenny classmates were in attendance at the Mass and reception to celebrate this important occasion. In a recent edition of The Avenue we ran an article about vocations. Michael’s mother Tammy responded to

our call for information from any and all graduates who might have entered consecrated life. In her letter Tammy shared the news that Michael had entered the seminary after one year at Tallahassee Community College where he had enrolled as a path to FSU. While at TCC he became very involved in the Catholic Student Union, run by the Brotherhood of Hope, as his older sisters had done when they were at FSU. She shared in her letter, “That is where Michael’s journey began.” Bishop Kenny High School has a long history of graduates who have entered consecrated life and we are proud to have played even a small part in this important decision and look forward to Father Michael Hartley joining us on campus often.

Many of Father Michael’s BK classmates and friends attended his first Mass at Assumption Parish. Julie Joseph Burke Scholarship Now in its 5th year, the Julie Joseph Burke Scholarship was presented at the 8th grade graduation program at Christ the King School in June. Mrs. Elizabeth McGovern, one of Julie’s teachers at Christ the King, made the presentation to Hailey Klein who is now a freshman at Bishop Kenny. The scholarship, which was established in memory of Julie Joseph Burke, a 1984 graduate of Christ the King and member of the BK Class of 1988, is awarded annually. Each recipient is awarded a one-time, $1,000 scholarship to help defray the cost of tuition at BKHS. Julie Joseph married Ronald Burke while attending college. They had two children, Kaylee, a 2010 BK graduate and a son Ronnie, who graduated in 2015. Julie passed away in 2004 after suffering complications from a heart condition. Julie’s parents, Donna and Joe Joseph BK ‘65, and husband, Ronnie Burke, established this scholarship to honor Julie’s life and memory in a way she would want. Julie was continually helping others to achieve their goals, giving to others, and serving her church, school, and community. She was an inspiration to all who knew her and a shining example of God’s love. Hailey was selected for the

award because she demonstrates many of the same qualities as Julie. Anyone who would like to make a contribution to the Julie Joseph Burke Scholarship at Bishop Kenny High School is encouraged to contact Sheila Marovich, Director of Advancement, at 398-7545 or advancement@bishopkenny.org.

Scholarship at BK. Danny won it by submitting an application and essay for the one-time, $1,000 scholarship.

Christina Gregson Scholarship The Christina Gregson Scholarship was established by the Gregson family to honor the memory of a much-loved member of the Bishop Kenny Class of 2005. Through her courageous battle with Muscular Dystrophy, Christina taught all who knew her the meaning of courage and strength. Freshman Danny Cox, a graduate of Holy Family Catholic School, is the winner of the 4th annual Christina Gregson Memorial

Christina’s Catholic religion and Catholic education were very important to her, as well as her volunteer work at DOSA Camps and the Mayo Clinic. It is for these reasons that the scholarship has been set up at Christina’s alma mater where she was so happy and successful for four years. According to the criteria governing the scholarship, candidates must write a brief paragraph describing how they are coping with or have overcome a life-challenging adversity. We are grateful to the Gregson family for their generosity on behalf of Danny and all of the students from Holy Family who will be selected for this honor in the future.

John Burke Award For the third time since its inception in 1967, administration of the John Burke Award has been passed on to new caregivers. John Burke’s siblings, all BK graduates, have taken over the duties associated with the annual Scholar Athlete Award established in memory of their brother John. The John Burke award was originally established and funded by The Father Maher Council of the Knights of Columbus. A group of John Burke’s classmates, after realizing that there had been a gap of 11 years in presenting the award, decided to make it their personal project. The group funded and presented the award for the next 24 years. Now, following in the footsteps of their brother’s classmates, the Burke family is committed to honoring the memory of their brother each year at the Senior Awards program.

Colleen Lanahan Foy and Roger DuPont, members of the Cass of 1965, presented Bishop Kenny High School with a new plaque representing the history of The John Burke Award. The plaque is displayed in the lobby of the John Baldwin Athletic Center.

Carla Harris, surrounded by friends and family, holds a framed copy of the resolution honoring her philanthropic and business accomplishments. Photo was taken at City Council Chambers at Jacksonville City Hall.

City Council Honors Carla Harris BK graduate Matt Schellenberg ‘71 is a member of the Jacksonville City Council. He is also a long-time friend and supporter of Bishop Kenny High School having served on the advisory school board and finance committee for many years. In those capacities Councilman Schellenberg has first-hand knowledge of the many good works Carla Harris ‘80 has undertaken to benefit Bishop Kenny High School. The goal of her projects has always been to secure the ongoing financial stability of the Carla Harris Scholarship Fund at BK. Ms. Harris has personally undertaken and executed five very successful fundraising concerts at Carnegie Hall in New York City. She has also written two books and produced several music CDs - partial proceeds of which have also been added to the fund - the value of which now exceeds her original goal of $500,000. Councilman Schellenberg successfully proposed a resolution commending Ms. Harris not only for her generosity on behalf of Bishop Kenny High School, but also for her many accomplishments in the business world and for her philanthropic efforts beyond Jacksonville. The Jacksonville City Council passed the proposed legislation and, on May 10, 2016, formally bestowed the honor on Carla at a regularly scheduled meeting of the City Council.

Principal Todd Orlando and Councilman Matt Schellenberg ’71 congratulate Carla Harris ’80 at the Jacksonville City Council Chamber.

Members of the Class of 1956 gathered for a 60th reunion

The Bishop Kenny Class of 1956 held their 60th reunion in Jacksonville in June. Thirty-four classmates and twen60 YEARS ty-two spouses attended. Everyone was excited to be reunited once again. Bishop Kenny opened in 1952 and we were the first class to attend the first four years. Many commented this was the BEST reunion they had attended.

dessert. Later that afternoon we said our good-byes and departed back to our lives in the real world.

The weekend kicked off with a gathering in the St. John’s Hospitality Room at the Hampton Inn. There was a lot of hugging, laughter, and reminiscing about the hectic days of high school. Our class consisted of 119 graduates, 62 males and 57 females. We mourn the loss of thirty-six classmates, 24 males and 12 females.

We were unable to locate seventeen (17) classmates. Their names are listed below and anyone with information about them is asked to please contact Ralph Mosley at rmosl704@bellsouth.net (904) 744-9522, or Don Marx at blueknight38@bellsouth.net (904) 744-5166.

Class of 1956

The festivities continued on Saturday morning at the home of Buddy & Peggy Lawrence with a luncheon of pulled pork, baked beans, potato salad, and broccoli casserole. We were honored to have Mass celebrated by Monsignor Mortimer Danaher, the third president at Bishop Kenny. During Mass a candle was lit for each of the thirty-six deceased classmates as their names were read. Later that evening we enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Enza’s Italian Restaurant. On Sunday morning, everyone gathered for brunch at the home of Mary Elizabeth Cook Sandifer. We enjoyed a marvelous meal of eggs, sausage, grits casserole, vegetarian spinach, egg and cheese casserole, cranberry chicken salad, ham biscuits, fruit bowl, and

Due to the generosity of Buddy and Peggy Lawrence and Mary Elizabeth Cook Sandifer, we were able to minimize expenses which allowed us to make a financial contribution to the Sisters of Saint Joseph. The presentation was made at the convent in St. Augustine on July 19, 2016. (See below.)

1956 Members Visit the Sisters of St. Joseph in St. Augustine On July 19, 2016, several of the reunion committee members of the Class of 1956 traveled to St. Augustine to present the Sisters of St. Joseph with a financial contribution in appreciation for their many years of dedicated service to the students of Bishop Kenny High School. We were greeted by Sister Thomas Joseph McGoldrick, SSJ and General Superior, Sister Jane Stoecker, SSJ who took us on a tour of the original convent which was built in the late 17th century. The building was purchased in 1785 during the second Spanish period by Father Miquel O’Reilly, the parish priest of St. Augustine. We toured the Menendez Room where artifacts were on display, including the history of the founding of the city and information on the “Old Cathedral” - the first parish church in the New World. The Sisters of St Joseph came to St. Augustine in 1866 at the request of Florida’s first Bishop, Augustin Verot, to educate the liberated slaves after the civil war and began teaching school on the first floor while residing on the second floor. The last class conducted in the house was in 1956. This was a most impressive and educational visit and will be remembered by all. The museum is open to the public on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM. Admission is Free.

The Bishop Kenny Class of 1966 celebrated its (gulp) 50th reunion on April 8 and 9. The event was 50 YEARS held at Four Points by Sheraton at Jacksonville Beach and it proved to be a great venue. What’s better than the ocean, where many of us spent so many hours during our summers in high school?

Class of 1966

The main events were held in the meeting rooms, but there were other lovely places – the fire pit outside overlooking the beach and the cozy lobby area – where classmates could catch up casually in small groups. More than 50 graduates, along with significant others, attended the festivities, which included heavy hors d'oeuvres, a cash bar, and great conversation on Friday evening, and everything from snacks and a delicious buffet dinner to dancing away to the oldies with a DJ on Saturday night.

Lots of smartphone photos captured precious moments, including people organizing themselves by parishes for group shots. Mostly, there was a palpable joy at seeing those we hadn’t talked with for many years. We mourned the loss of beloved men and women we knew as Crusaders and we reveled in the accomplishments of those still working, doing volunteer work, caring for family members, traveling, or reveling in grandchildren. You get the picture. It turned out to be so much fun that there are regular luncheons taking place for those in the Jacksonville area to continue connecting. Bottom line: Bishop Kenny was a very special place and we were happy to reflect that weekend on all that those years meant to us and do all that we can to preserve it. So, yes, there is talk of a 55th! Submitted by: Jane Clifford Mickler

Class of 1971 45 YEARS The Class of 1971 held its 45-year reunion in early April. The group kicked off the evening with Mass at the Bishop Kenny Chapel celebrated by our classmate, Father Mike Houle, and assisted by classmates and Deacons Mike Elison and Brian Hughes. Father Mike Pendergraft had pastoral duties at the time of the Mass, but joined us at the reunion party. After Mass everyone got together at The Mudville Grille for drinks and fellowship. It was a good turn-out, lots of fun, and everybody looked great!

Members of the Class of 1971 gathered at the Paul F. Tanner Chapel as classmate Rev. Michael Houle celebrated Mass as part of the group’s 45th reunion activities.

A number of classmates have expressed an interest in getting together more often, and not waiting five years for the next reunion. Stay tuned for information regarding upcoming reunions. If you are not receiving emails about class events and news, you can stay in touch by sending an email to BKClassof1971@gmail.com to be put on the class distribution list, and by going to our class Facebook page, which is cleverly named Bishop Kenny High School Class of 1971. Either way, we would love to hear from all of our classmates. Submitted by: Mike Heekin

Class of 1976

More than 70 members of the Class of 40 YEARS 1976 gathered in Jacksonville Beach the weekend of August 19 to celebrate forty years of friendship. The reunion began Friday night as Scott and Julie Dewhurst Terrazzano (‘76 and ‘79) graciously opened their lovely home to their former classmates for an evening of food, drink, laughter, and long-overdue conversations. Awesome people!” friendships right where they’d left off forty years ago.

Although many classmates still live in Northeast Florida, several traveled long distances to see their friends – from as far away as California, New York, Texas, and Maine. All agreed that it was worth the trip. “It was wonderful to see everyone,” said Tammy Bowling Hughes (Dallas, TX) in her Facebook post, “As always, the evening went by way too fast.”

Many thanks to reunion organizers Tom and Nancy Germano, Karen Huber Tracy, Scott and Julie Dewhurst Terrazzano, and Martha Mead Ira, plus a special thank you to Terri Heekin Davlantes for arranging the Mass and campus tour. Class of 1991 25 YEARS The BK Class of 1991 gathered for Mass at the Bishop Paul Tanner Chapel as part of their weekend activites in June. Father Tom Willis, who taught many of the classmates was kind enough to travel from the Cathedral in St. Augustine where he serves as Pastor to celebrate Mass. Principal Todd Orlando, who also taught the Class of ‘91, was on hand to give the group a campus tour.

Class of 2006 10 YEARS Bishop Kenny’s Class of 2006 hosted their 10year class reunion at Queen's Harbour Yacht and Country Club on Saturday, June 25. With over 60 in attendance, the class enjoyed reminiscing favorite high school memories, as well as catching up with classmates who were both still local to Jacksonville and those who traveled as far away as St. Louis, MO to attend! We started the night with a blessing from one of our very own classmates, Father Michael Hartley and ended the night with Otis Spunkmeyer cookies – a Bishop Kenny staple! 46

The Class of 2006 gathered at Queens Harbour for a 10-year reunion in June. Ten years later Kyle Mullaney, Ryan Jaghab, Erin Slappey, Liz Hazlehurst, Rev. Michael Hartley, and Megan O’Hara Luten picked up right where they left off.
