Dear BK Family, It is an honor to represent our school as principal for the twenty-second year. As a member of this community for thirty-five years, I have had the pleasure of witnessing our graduates leave campus with a foundation of faith and a spirit of service that have guided them to vocations and careers far beyond Kingman Avenue. Bishop Kenny is more than a school. We are a community of faith, and our mission is more than forming scholars. We strive, above all else, to form young men and women who go on to live purpose-filled lives of faith and service to others. As we look back over the 2022-23 school year in this issue of The Avenue, we see the fruits of those efforts and celebrate the many accomplishments of our students and alumni. We also celebrate our faculty and the ever-growing campus offerings in academics, athletics, and activities. This is an exciting time for our school, as we work harder than ever to continue to grow, innovate, and provide a cutting-edge learning environment while maintaining our rich history and tradition. In a time when society may feel complex and the obstacles facing our children appear vast, BK is committed to reminding our community that we are wonderfully made in the image and likeness of God. The beauty and wisdom of God’s creation and plan for humanity guide all of us in responding to the conflicting messages in today’s world. This issue of The Avenue also ushers in some change. This publication will now be the home for information about campus life, alumni news, and our annual school year recap. Our financial information, including much-deserved recognition of the generous support we receive from our community each year, moves to the Annual Report, which will be mailed out later this year. Class of 2023, welcome to the alumni family! No matter where your path takes you in life, I pray that each of you will always remember our campus as a safe and quiet refuge from the fast-paced world surrounding us. 1989 – The magazine was

named by Msgr. Michael Houle, and its first issue was printed as a simple two-color, newsletter style, six-page publication. The format remained the same, but grew in page count, for its first 12 years in production.

2002 – A commemorative issue celebrating BK’s 50th anniversary was published. Nancy Dunham Smith ’69 volunteered to design the anniversary issue and see it through production. The result was a full-color, 28-page, large-size edition with a fold-out timeline and more history than had ever been compiled about our beloved school.

2011 – The first time fullcolor pages appeared in The Avenue. This volume’s cover featured BK’s riverfront cross, a gift from the Class of 2011. Since then, The Avenue has been printed in full color in its entirety.

2023 – Today, The Avenue is mailed to more than 14,000 alumni, parents, and friends of the school.

Challenges are part of the high school experience, but for the Class of 2023, unprecedented trials from the worldwide pandemic became part of their BK history. After pivoting to remote learning in the spring of their freshman year, they returned to campus in the fall with masks and added health measures as the world worked to understand and manage the pandemic. Despite the history-making challenges, the Class of 2023 showed tremendous resilience and overcame obstacles with the same Crusader spirit that has always set Bishop Kenny students apart. Finding creative and innovative ways to pursue their academic, athletic, arts, and volunteer pursuits, students turned what could have been devastating circumstances into opportunities for dynamic problem-solving. They excelled as leaders, visionaries, and volunteer advocates in their community, proudly demonstrating the spirit of a Crusader throughout their four years. Like a superhero wearing a totally different kind of mask, they became the heroes of their own story and we are proud to celebrate them.

Valedictorian – EMILY WILSON Valedictorian Emily Wilson graduated with a grade point average of 4.61, an outstanding accomplishment. After transferring to Bishop Kenny from St. Vincent’s Academy in Savannah, Georgia, Emily became a member of the National Honor Society and the Latin, Science, Mu Alpha Theta, Rho Kappa, and English Honor Societies. She also participated in various clubs and organizations, including the Latin and Science Clubs, and was captain of our Brain Brawl Team. Emily achieved first honors honor roll every quarter of her high school career. She completed 13 Advanced Placement courses, was named an AP Scholar with Distinction, and is an AP Capstone Diploma recipient. Emily completed more than 330 hours of community service during high school, volunteering with ZooTeens!, a Jacksonville Zoo & Gardens program. She was also a volunteer with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, where she was the team leader for Project Cure and a candidate for the organization’s Student of the Year. Emily was accepted to the University of Florida, Florida State University, University of Georgia, Emory University, Clemson University, and University of Notre Dame. She now attends the University of Florida Honors College, majoring in Environmental Science. She plans to focus on environmental research and eventually environmental law.

Salutatorian – LEO RODRIGUEZ Salutatorian Leo Rodriguez graduated with a grade point average of 4.61. Leo came to Bishop Kenny from St. Paul’s Catholic School. He was a member of the National Honor Society as well as the Spanish, National Science, Mu Alpha Theta, Rho Kappa, and English Honor Societies. Leo participated in numerous clubs and organizations during high school, including Interact, BK Buddies, and Spanish Club, and was a member of the cross country and track teams. He was honored as the Exchange Club of Jacksonville’s Student of the Year. Leo achieved honor roll every quarter of his high school career, had straight A’s in thirteen Advanced Placement courses, and was named an AP Scholar with Distinction. He completed more than 228 hours of community service during his high school career. Leo was an integral part of the Interact Club, dedicating time and energy to planning the Dance Marathon to raise funds for children’s hospitals and BK Buddies. Leo also volunteered during the summer with TOPSoccer, a program to introduce soccer to youth with disabilities. Leo was accepted to the University of Florida, Florida State University, University of Central Florida, University of Notre Dame, Northwestern University, and University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. He is attending the University of Florida Honors College, majoring in Economics. 8 | FALL 2023

Bishop John J. Snyder Peace in Christ Award CLAYTON MOULDER

Clayton Moulder was selected as the recipient of the Bishop John J. Snyder Peace in Christ Award. This prestigious award was established in 2001 and is given to a graduating senior who demonstrates a love of God by consistently exhibiting those virtues modeled by Bishop Snyder. The recipient must be in good academic standing, possess a character reflecting humility, demonstrate a history of serving others with compassion and resolving conflicts, and be an active member of their church community. Clayton embodies many of those traits, such as a strong academic history and involvement in extracurricular activities, including Campus Ministry, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, History, and Interact Clubs. He altar served at monthly school Masses as an underclassman and transitioned to serving as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion during his senior year. In his spare time, Clayton has always enjoyed fishing with his grandfather, Papa Moulder. Going forward to be a fisher of men, Clayton participated in a signing celebration on June 1 for his fall entry into the St. John Vianney College Seminary in Miami, Florida. Attended by Fr. Jason Trull ’92, Fr. Clay Ludwig ’11, Fr. Matt King, Deacon Bob DeLuca, Principal Todd Orlando, and many friends and family members, the ceremony marked the answer to God’s call. “I am overjoyed with my decision and really wanted to pursue my vocational calling right away,” explained Clayton. “I didn’t want to waste my time, but wanted to follow God’s call now.” Reflecting on the love of his faith, Clayton looks forward to his next catch. “The college classes I will be taking in philosophy and theology will help me expand my knowledge of fishing, allowing me to bring people into the church to know the word of God,” said Clayton.

leaving a LEGACY

Introduced in 2022, the legacy stole is becoming an important tradition at our commencement ceremonies. A white stole with the word “Legacy” embroidered across it indicates that the graduate has at least one other close family member who graduated from Bishop Kenny. In the Class of 2023, there were 69 legacy graduates, and currently, in the 2023-24 school year, there are more than 200 alumni parents of Bishop Kenny students.

Raymond and Patricia Tubel ’55 met at Immaculate Conception while waiting for the bus on their first day of school as members of the first sophomore class of Bishop Kenny High School. Who knew that two high school sweethearts would grow into what is now Bishop Kenny’s first 4th generation family of Crusaders? The impact Bishop Kenny had on their lives led them to want to pass those values to their children. They saw the value of education and faith formation and decided to give their children the same opportunity.

Sisters of Saint Joseph Scholarship The Sisters of Saint Joseph Scholarship was established to honor the immense contributions of the seventy-five members of the Sisters of St. Joseph who served as teachers and administrators at BK from 1952 to 2013. The $1,000 scholarship sponsored by BK is awarded annually to a graduating senior who will be attending a Catholic college or university. Mrs. Amanda Centorrino presented this year’s Sisters of Saint Joseph Scholarship to Erin Buckley ’23, who is attending The Catholic University of America.

John Burke Award The John Burke Award is presented to a student who demonstrates exceptional achievement in both academics and athletics. John Burke ‘65 was an outstanding BK scholar-athlete who lettered in football, baseball, and track. John passed away during the summer between his freshman and sophomore years at the University of Florida. The Burke family selects the recipient of this $1,000 scholarship. Winners’ names are added to a plaque displayed in Baldwin Athletic Center, and they also receive a commemorative plaque. John Burke’s brother, Tom Burke ’76, presented this year’s award to Michael Leonard ‘23.

Katie Caples Scholarship The Katie Caples Scholarship is given by the foundation established in memory of Katie Caples ‘99, who passed away during her junior year in an automobile accident. She was an honor student, state championship runner, and fully involved in campus extracurricular activities. Each year, a committee evaluates anonymous nominations for the $1,000 scholarship based on academic achievement, athletic participation, and service to school and community. The foundation raises awareness and support for organ donation programs. Amy Reese presented the 2023 Katie Caples Scholarship to “Katie Scholar” Josie Rill ‘23.

Clay Roberts Memorial Scholarship The Clay Roberts Memorial Scholarship is presented by the family of Clay Roberts, a member of the BK Class of 2007, who passed away during his senior year. The $1,000 renewable four-year scholarship celebrates Clay’s life and is presented to a student who has participated in varsity athletics and maintained a strong academic and extracurricular record, while demonstrating fair play and team spirit. Clay Roberts’ sister Casey, BK Class of 2010, presented the plaque and the award to Keira D’Errico ‘23.

John J. Will Memorial Scholarship The John J. Will Memorial Science & Technology Scholarship is provided by Lark Will, ’77, in memory of her father, John J. Will, an engineer who encouraged his daughters to pursue math and science even at a time when it was uncommon for young women to enter these fields. This $3,000 scholarship is presented annually to a female student who plans to pursue a degree in science, technology, engineering, or math. Science faculty member Mrs. Vicki Schmitt presented this year’s commemorative plaque and award to Emily Wilson ‘23.

David D. Williams Memorial Scholarship The David D. Williams Memorial Scholarship is presented for the first time in honor of Coach Dave Williams, a beloved member of the BK family who served as a teacher, coach, and administrator during a distinguished 32-year career at the school. This $1,500 scholarship was established and endowed by former wrestlers and students of Coach Williams and will be presented annually to a graduating senior wrestler with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Dominic Allmond Memorial Scholarship The Dominic Allmond Memorial Scholarship is presented in memory of Dominic Allmond, a member of the BK Class of 2020, who passed away during his junior year. The endowed $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a senior boys basketball player named by a selection committee, not for his performance on the basketball court, but for demonstrating kindness, humility, and the ability to make others feel special. Coach Jerry Buckley presented this year’s scholarship to William Barrett Baker ‘23.

BK Courage & Spirit Award The BK Courage & Spirit Award is presented to a student or students who have faced exceptional health or other personal challenges during their time at BK. Despite those challenges, the recipient of the $1,000 scholarship will have successfully managed a full academic schedule and participated in athletics and/or extracurricular activities. Their strength, faith, and positive attitudes provide inspiration and encourage others to accept life’s challenges with faith in God and the support of family and friends. Mary Bullock Harms ‘93 presented this year’s award to Chloe Provenza ‘23.

Presidents’ Award The Presidents’ Award is presented for the first time to a senior displaying the charisms of three past Bishop Kenny presidents. Msgr. Mortimer Danaher (1956-1967), Msgr. Daniel Logan (1971-1989), and Msgr. Michael Houle (1989-2015), whose 55 years of combined leadership are the inspiration for this award, shared unique gifts in their service to BK. The recipient of this award is the student-leader who best demonstrates strength, compassion, and forgiveness in leadership. This $1,000 scholarship was established by Ken Kelly ’83 through a gift to the BK Endowment in gratitude for his experience with each of the namesake leaders. Commencement Speaker

Dr. Brett Frykberg ’00 grew up in Jacksonville, where he attended Assumption Catholic School and Bishop Kenny. While at Kenny, he was a three-sport athlete and graduated magna cum laude. Brett attended the University of Tennessee on engineering and track and field scholarships. While at Tennessee, Brett earned a degree in biochemistry and developed a passion for helping others, which ultimately led him to attend medical school at the Medical College of Virginia. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Florida in Jacksonville, followed by an elite fellowship and advanced training in adult reconstructive surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. Today, Brett works at the Jacksonville Orthopedic Institute with the same physicians who cared for him during his years as a student-athlete at Bishop Kenny. He feels blessed to care for the orthopedic needs of people in the community where he grew up. He continues to give back through volunteer work, coaching, and even speaking with BK students interested in a medical careers. Brett keeps in touch with his close friends from his time at BK. Some of his old teachers have even stopped by his office, prompting an amazing trip down memory lane. Some of his favorite memories from Bishop Kenny include the camaraderie of the football team, his art history teacher who taught him different and constructive ways to express himself, and, of course, there was nothing like warm Otis Spunkmeyer cookies every morning before classes! Brett is extremely passionate about caring for others and, when not in the operating room, enjoys life with his wife, Mandy, and their two children, Knox (11) and Skylar (8). He enjoys golfing and fishing with his family, and in his spare time, he has completed a few Ironman triathlons.

Jacob Berengolts ’23 and his constant companion Hattie, an English Cream Golden Retriever, spent eight years together, four of them at BK. In that time, they gave students and faculty a firsthand lesson about the value of service dogs. Hattie’s BK uniform was a red service dog vest that she wore with pride. She faithfully performed her job to support Jacob’s specific needs, and the crowd assembled at graduation cheered when Hattie walked across the stage with Jacob. We thank Jacob and the Berengolts family for sharing Hattie with us. Hattie developed serious health challenges not long after graduation and passed away peacefully in July. She will be both missed and remembered.

Each grade of high school marks a unique steppingstone in the lives of students. For freshmen, there is the excitement and awkwardness of new beginnings and new friends. Budding confidence and eager curiosity are often characteristics of sophomore year, as students begin to find their place among a wide array of sports and extracurricular activities. Rigor and ambition are hallmarks of junior class students, as they set their sights on the competitive challenges of the upcoming college admission process. For the seniors, there is the exuberance and goodwill that comes from knowing that the friends, teachers, and tenets that have been part of their Bishop Kenny experience have left an indelible mark on the future they are soon to write. Yet it isn’t what’s different about each grade that sets the Bishop Kenny experience apart. Wherever students fall in the spectrum of high school or within the course of an academic year, it’s our Catholic faith that unifies their experiences through charity, friendship, and love for others. This is the hallmark of Crusader students. This is what binds us. Day to day, it may look different for each of us, but looking back, it’s the difference maker that defines our tradition of excellence.

The 71st year on campus saw many notable capital improvements that will keep us on pace to continue offering students a superior education in a faith-filled community. New to the school were not only more than 360 new students but also seven newly renovated learning spaces in the 100 Building and a newly-constructed science lab that replaces the former locker pavilion. Students learning in the Larmoyeux Anatomy & Physiology Lab now benefit from medical-school caliber technology with the innovative, digital Anatomage Table. With it, students can learn more about the human body while conducting 3D dissections. In addition, classroom renovations continue with interactive Promethean boards and new flexible student furniture. Thanks to the generosity of our benefactors, and in particular the funds raised at the inaugural Big Red Ball in February, all classrooms should be renovated by 2024. Enhancements to academic programs include the adoption of Canvas, a new learning management system. Canvas, most used in colleges and universities, offers more robust enhancements for our digital learning environment, and affords us another opportunity to prepare students for collegiate studies. We also launched Paper, a 24/7 online tutoring service where students can converse with a live tutor in any academic subject at no additional cost, as well as upload writing assignments for feedback prior to submitting final drafts. This online platform is offered in addition to our existing in-person tutoring sessions, the Math Lab, and our new Academic Skills Lab, available to students three times per week. The NJROTC program reached a huge milestone this year, celebrating its 50th anniversary. Marking the occasion was the opening last August of a brand-new training facility located behind the 600 Building. On the science frontier, ten students were honored at the Northeast Florida Regional Science and Engineering Fair, with five students continuing to represent the region at the State Science Fair, and one student selected to compete at the Genius Olympiad in New York. Spanning multiple subjects from statistics to psychology, our Advanced Placement Program continues to grow, with 30% of the student body enrolled in at least one AP course for the 2022-2023 academic year. In addition to administering more than 1,000 AP exams, we are proud to announce that 155 of our students have earned various AP scholar awards this year, and 31 earned the prestigious AP Capstone Diploma. Following suit, a record 320 students were inducted into one or more of our 12 honor societies this past March. The technological and academic enhancements of the past year will truly work alongside us as we prepare students for an enriching life beyond Kingman Avenue. In welcoming the new incoming freshmen who will form the 75th graduating class of Bishop Kenny High School in 2027, we are grateful to the entirety of our community for being a part of the excellence that is a hallmark of our faith-based curriculum. Bishop Kenny NJROTC – Celebrating 50 Years of Success Bishop Kenny’s Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) program celebrated its 50th Anniversary on March 28, 2023. Jacksonville city leaders, the Diocese of St. Augustine Superintendent of Schools, former cadets and instructors, and parents and family members were in attendance for the event.

Nearly 50 years ago, Bishop Kenny NJROTC was established on April 2nd, 1973, as the second NJROTC unit in Jacksonville. Since then, our program has helped young cadets become better Americans, sending quality graduates to service academies, helping them earn ROTC scholarships and acceptance to civilian institutions. Thirty cadets have earned appointments to the service academies, including U.S. Military Academy (West Point), U.S. Naval Academy (Annapolis), U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Additionally, more than fifty cadets have received ROTC scholarships to various universities nationwide. BK NJROTC cadets have also diligently served the Jacksonville community, completing an estimated 90,000 community service hours.

The evening celebrated the program’s past, but also looked ahead to a bright future, which includes the use of a new multi-purpose training facility, which houses a state-of-the-art marksmanship range, as well as offering an EmbryRiddle Aeronautical University Unmanned Aerial Systems course aimed at earning the FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot certificate. Current cadets provided guided tours and simulated a Brain Brawl Team competition, gave a CyberPatriot Team presentation and demonstration, a Marksmanship Team demonstration, and a Drone Team demonstration. Everyone enjoyed the camaraderie, and it was truly a great night of celebration. Congratulations, BK NJROTC!

The 2023 edition of the Crusader yearbook achieved an All-Florida rating, the highest award from the Florida Scholastic Press Association (FSPA). In 2022, only 30 yearbooks in the state earned this title which puts the Crusader among the best. Thirteen staff members, under the direction of faculty member Dawn Huskey, worked throughout the year to design, photograph, interview, and publish 456 bound pages, an eight-page gatefold, and a sixteen-page spring supplement, making the Crusader’s 480-page edition one of the largest books in the country. Yearbook students attended events and worked hours beyond the school day to create a book that fully documents the 2022-23 Kenny experience. Among the two-page spreads, one stands out to the staff: “Just Add Water,” page 065, which features a photo of the girls’ swim team cheering above the lanes. Isabella Molano ’24 captured the moment, freezing the water droplets in midair with amazing clarity. The two-page spread also features NJROTC students preparing for inspection, JV volleyball’s 2-0 win over Nease, and cross country at the 24th Annual Katie Caples Invitational. So much time and effort were dedicated to each page, and the result beautifully captured our diverse student life at BK. Thanksgiving Food Drive Each year, the BKHS St. Vincent de Paul Society sponsors and coordinates the annual school-wide Thanksgiving Food Drive. Led by club officers and faculty sponsor Mrs. Noreen Thurson, this campus-wide effort is a hallmark of the holiday service season at Bishop Kenny. The 2022 drive proudly provided more than 500 Thanksgiving meals to families in fifteen parishes throughout the diocese.

ACE Award

Academic Perfection

The Bishop Kenny ACE (Architecture, Construction, Engineering) Club received Congratulations top awards in both the team and individual to Ellie Kirsch ‘24 categories from the ACE Mentor Program of for achieving a Northeast Florida. The BK Life Lineup team perfect score on was awarded first place in the Best Proposal the National Latin category, and seniors Grace Pendley and Josie Exam. Rill each received individual scholarships. Grace was awarded a $2,500 scholarship from Gilbane Building Company to study architecture at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Josie was awarded a $3,000 scholarship from the ABC Florida Women’s Council to study engineering at Wake Forest University. Faculty sponsor Ms. Alison Gallup is currently the Math Department Chair and has a Materials Science & Engineering Degree from UF with a specialty in plastics. She states, “This year’s competition was special because many of the seniors have been a part of the team since its founding four years ago. To watch them grow and become leaders, exploring different aspects of design, mentoring the younger students, and watching them discuss their designs against others was especially rewarding.” ACE Club presentations require students to design a team project according to a prompt given by the ACE Mentor Program. The club invites community mentors who work in the design field to weekly meetings throughout the school year to educate students about their jobs and work experience. In addition, students have opportunities for scholarships and internships from ACE mentors. Josie Rill says, “The most valuable benefit that students gain from participating in ACE is exposure to different design fields, which helps students find their passions and narrow career options to decide what their major should be in college.” Congratulations, ACE Club!

Eagle Scouts Congratulations to the following students for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout: Nathan Heekin ’23, Evelyn Morency ’23, Steven Jolly ’25, Logan Ellzey ’24, Chris Zanti ‘23 One of the main pillars of attaining the rank of Eagle Scout is the planning, development, and completion of a significant service project. As part of the project, the scout must successfully lead volunteers in helping to execute the project to successful completion. Bishop Kenny’s first-ever female Eagle Scout, Evelyn Morency completed repairs on the campus of Divine Mercy House.

Matthew Phan Congratulations to Matthew Phan ’24, winner of the Jacksonville Symphony Youth Orchestra (JSYO) Young Artist Competition. As the winner of this prestigious competition, Matthew was invited to play the opening piano solo supported by the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra at a performance in May. He played Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 18: III. Allegro scherzando by Sergei Rachmaninoff. Matthew has been playing piano since he was four years old and has won local, state, and national competitions. He manages a challenging academic schedule and has been a first honors student since his freshman year at BK. Matthew is the principal keyboardist of the JSYO Philharmonic and plays at Bishop Kenny and his church on the weekends.

Mission Trips Juan Pablo Castillo-Zima ‘25 and his brother Marty Daniel ‘27 spent a week in Uganda with their family volunteering with the Care * Love and Hope Foundation, founded by their mother in 2008. They worked daily alongside Benedictine priests, learning key values and seeing first-hand how the foundation is helping the needy and hungry. Juan Pablo says, “This trip was a blessing to me, the culture in Uganda is so rich, and I would like to dedicate more of my time to helping its people.”

Deacon Bob DeLuca Deacon Bob DeLuca faithfully served Bishop Kenny for 24 years in the chapel, on retreat, as a counselor, as chaperone of the March for Life trips to Washington, D.C., and perhaps most famously, as a willing participant in several student-led pep rally performances! Over the years, we relied on Deacon DeLuca in times of sadness and celebration, and we recognize the many important contributions he has made throughout the diocese. Thank you, Deacon, for blessing us with your ministry and service.

Kathleen Watson, P ‘00, ‘02, ‘05, ‘07, ‘08 Kathleen Watson retired after 18 years of service to Bishop Kenny. It goes without saying she will be greatly missed. A committed, hardworking, and thoughtful member of our staff, Kathleen touched many lives by lending a hand to anyone in need of assistance. A mother of five Bishop Kenny graduates, Kathleen is now spending cherished time with her grandchildren. BK is forever grateful to Kathleen for her commitment, passion, and dedication to our community.

The National Society of High School Scholars Award Jeanie Wilks was selected as a Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction by The National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS). A role model to pupils, Jeanie was nominated by a student for outstanding dedication and commitment to excellence in the profession. This honor recognizes exemplary educators whose passion and devotion inspire their students to grow and develop as scholars, leaders, and citizens.

Kristin Azzarello Hall ‘99 Kristin Azzarello Hall graduated from Bishop Kenny in 1999. After high school, she attended the University of Alabama and earned a BA in communication. She moved to Atlanta, where she began a sales career, met her husband Peter, and where their three boys were born. After working in advertising sales for television and radio, Kristin earned her residential real estate license and went on to become a Georgia real estate broker associate with Keller Williams. In anticipation of potentially moving back to Jacksonville, she earned her Florida real estate broker license in 2021. Kristin says her years in Jacksonville and on Kingman Avenue were formative, and after 17 years in Atlanta, she knew it was time to move home. She wanted her children to have a similar high school experience, wonderful life-long friends, fond memories of Friday nights on the river, and an excellent Catholic education. Kristin, Peter, and their three boys moved to Jacksonville in July 2021. Their children attend Assumption Catholic School. Michael is in 8th grade, Teddy is in 5th grade, and Alex is in 2nd grade. Kristin started substituting at Bishop Kenny in the spring of 2023 and immediately loved being back on campus. She accepted a job as the Advancement Officer this past June and serves as the liaison for A Legacy of Faith Capital Campaign, which will officially kick off in 2024! You will hear much more from her about Bishop Kenny’s Legacy of Faith campaign in the coming months. Kristin is thrilled to be back in Jacksonville; Bishop Kenny is the job she was always working toward, she just didn’t realize it until she came home.

Cheering fans and championship wins, trophies and sparkling medals, proud parents and buzzer-beating shots are banner moments in Crusader athletics. Yet, it’s the grit required for early morning workouts, the sweat that pours from giving it everything you’ve got, and the persistent resilience that powers an athlete’s drive and makes possible the notable achievements of Bishop Kenny’s 23 teams in 16 different sports. With more than half of students involved in school athletics, Crusader athletes learn how the fundamentals of discipline and commitment to excellence shine bright long after the stadium lights go dark. We are immensely proud of our 30 team state championships and 135 individual state champions; we know it’s what happens long before the glory of the win that makes our athletic program synonymous with hard work and integrity. Teamwork and hard work are the spirit of a Crusader, and that’s its own kind of win.

The girls’ and boys’ cross country teams had an impressive year, making it all the way to regionals and finishing 2nd and 3rd, respectively.

The boys’ golf team made it back to state finals for the fifth year in a row and finished runner-up at the 2A Region 1 tournament.

BK Swimming & Diving had yet another successful year, with both boys’ and girls’ teams winning district and regional titles, as well as a back-to-back state championship for the boys and a 3rd place state finish for the girls. Seven school records were broken, six at the state meet, and our boys’ 200 Medley Relay was named NISCA All-Americans. BK Sailing competed in 6 points regattas last year. The team finished 3rd, 1st, 3rd, 4th, 1st, and 3rd in the races and won the north division of SAISA for the sixth year in a row. Out of the 90+ teams, BK joined the top sixteen for the district championship in Wrightsville Beach, NC. After a very difficult regatta and cancellations due to high winds, the team finished 13th overall.

The BK Volleyball team had an impressive season, winning the district and regional titles, and making it all the way to the final four. They were ranked #30 in the state of Florida and 6th in district 4A. Three players went on to continue their careers in college; Ali Cavanaugh is attending the University of Georgia, Sarah Seabrooke is playing at Rollins College, and Emilia Estrada signed with Le Moyne College.

BK Head Swim Coach Laurel Valley ’98 was named the Florida Dairy Farmers Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year. This award caps off an outstanding season that ended with the Crusaders winning the back-toback FHSAA Class 2A state title. The combined results of individual and relay performances secured the title for the team. Coach Valley says, “I am so proud of this team. At the beginning of the year, they set the lofty goal of repeating as state champions. Through hard work and dedication, they made that a reality. I am blessed to coach such a great group of swimmers on both teams.” Coach Valley has three assistant coaches: Dennis Candalora, Katherine Gibson, and Stephanie Jaeger, who were also instrumental in the season’s success. athletics review WINTER BASKETBALL Boys – 21-9

Boys Basketball had a strong season, advancing to the district final for the sixth consecutive season and the regional final for the fifth time. They defeated Bolles three times, including in the regional quarterfinal, and defeated Paxon in the regional semifinal.

Girls Basketball beat Bolles, 43-31, to win the district title for the fifth consecutive year, and they defeated Rutherford, 50-39, to win the regional title for the fifth consecutive year as well. They advanced to the state championship with a 69 – 47 win over Cardinal Gibbons and ultimately ended their successful season as runner-up in the state championship.

Boys – 14-4-3

The boys’ varsity soccer team concluded their season as District 4 runner-up and Region 1 4A runner-up.

Girls – 10-7-2

The girls’ soccer team ended their season 10-7-2, taking 2nd place in the district 4A championship, and advancing to the regional quarterfinals. The program celebrated 30 years at BK with a special event for current and previous players from our founding team and the class of ’93.

The BK Wrestling team went all the way to the state championship, finishing 18th in Class 1A. Roberto Cuartero ‘23 placed 4th at 152 lbs, and Collin Hearn ‘23 placed 6th at 182 lbs. A highlight from the season was defeating Bolles 69-0 on senior night. FALL 2023 | 41

The Crusaders capitalized on an outstanding postseason performance to return to the state finals. They finished as the Class 4A runner-up.

BK Beach volleyball was ranked #12 in the nation and #8 in Florida. They won their district and made it all the way to the sweet 16. Head Coach Suzanne Winkler was named the 2023 Florida Coaches Coalition Beach Volleyball Coach of the Year!

TRACK & FIELD

The varsity team finished the year undefeated in the district. The team captured the district title in an eight-inning final against Yulee. Led by seniors Kaley Blackburn, Keira D’Errico, and Karlee Paishon, the Crusaders battled Baker County and lost 6-2 in the Regional-Quarter final to end their season. Pitchers Kaitlyn Gilmore and Abby Satkoff combined for a 1.198 ERA for the season. Kaitlyn pitched a no-hitter in the Doc4Life Tournament against Lake Weir and had her 200th strikeout of the season in the district championship game against Yulee, finishing the season with a .821 ERA. Kaitlyn also finished third at the plate with a .321 average. Abby Satkoff pitched a three-inning perfect game against Andrew Jackson and pitched an amazing game and hit a double against the Baker County Wildcats in the last game of the season. Kaley Blackburn led the team offensively this year earning a .385 batting average, including two homeruns on the season. Sophomore Ava Farnham was not far behind with a .358 batting average, leading the team with five triples. Freshman Abby Jackson led the team in home runs with three on the season.

Alejandro V. ‘24, Jack L. ‘25, JP Castillo-Zima ‘25, James W. ‘25 JP Castillo-Zima finished 6th in the Boys 2A 3200 Meters with a time of 9:36.12. Jayden Harris finished 3rd in the High Jump at the Class 2A State Track Meet this afternoon with a jump of 1.97M (6-5 1/2).

Emma Gredenhag ’23 will continue her tennis career at St. Michaels College. Senior Sofia Lopez was a district champion as a 4th seed, District Runner-up, and represented Bishop Kenny at regionals.

WEIGHTLIFTING

The weightlifting team had a strong season with Nate Politano ‘24, Price Watson ‘23, Ian Eldrige ‘23, and Chris Zanti ’23 all qualifying for the State meet, placing them in the top 20 overall. Senior Price Watson finished 5th at state in the 183 lb class.

More than 430 guests attended the inaugural Big Red Ball, enjoying cocktails, dinner, and dancing while raising money to help further Bishop Kenny’s mission. Held in February at the Deerwood Castle, guests enjoyed the collection of vintage and luxury cars in the Jacksonville Sports Car Museum, and Brian Sexton P’19, P’23, P’24 hosted the live auction. More than anything, participants and committee members like Kara Citrano Leonard ‘90 reveled in connecting with old and new friends of Bishop Kenny. “It was an outstanding evening; we saw first-hand BK’s inspiring vision to ensure each classroom at BK is ready to meet the present and future needs of our children,” explained Leonard. “But perhaps most importantly, it was a testament to BK’s commitment to continue growing its tradition of excellence while shining a light on ordinary people who do extraordinary things for a school and community I love so much.” The event raised $120,000 towards state-of-the-art technology and new Node desks in classrooms. Renovation projects this past summer are already benefitting our students thanks to the generous support of attendees and presenting sponsors: kasper architects + associates and RF-SMART and the J. The 23rd Annual BK Boosters Golf Tournament was a tremendous success, raising $42,000 - the most ever raised in the history of our tournament! Held at the beautiful Deercreek Country Club in November of last year, the tournament saw participation from 24 teams, each vying for the coveted championship title. With the sun shining, the players showcased their golfing skills on the greens of Deercreek. The day was filled with friendly competition, laughter, and camaraderie as golfers came together to support our cause. The energy and enthusiasm were infectious, making it a truly enjoyable event for all involved. The class of 1957 celebrated their 65-year reunion on October 10-12, 2022 at the Marriott Courtyard at Jacksonville Beach. The reunion was celebrated with a day of golf, a banquet, and a memorial Mass with Fr. Mike Williams.

(B) Class of 1970

The class of 1970 celebrated their 52-year reunion on September 10, 2022 at the Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish Hall.

The Class of 1972 celebrated their 50-year class reunion October 21-22, 2022. The weekend started with Mass on Friday, celebrated by Fr. John Reynolds in the Bishop Paul F. Tanner Chapel at Bishop Kenny. Everyone came back on Saturday to the Carla Harris Performing Art Center for a night of dinner, drinks, and camaraderie.

The Class of 1977 celebrated their 45th reunion at Casa Marina in Jacksonville Beach on September 9, 2022. As part of their activities, the class held an auction to raise money for the school. They generously raised $1,977 for BK. Thank you, Class of 1977!

The Class of 1990 celebrated their 30-year class reunion at the Alumni & Family Homecoming Tailgate on September 16, 2022, and at Lemon Street Brewing Co. on Saturday, September 17, 2022. Your generosity allows more students to benefit from a Crusader education while continuing the tradition of service and living for others that we instill in all BK students.

Education & Careers Isabella Horning ‘17 graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant, 5/25/22. She plans to stay at the

Travis Chapman ‘96 at a recent Yankees’ game against the Red Sox in NY. Travis is the first base coach for the Yankees. Nathan Jubran ‘18 was named the ASUN Male Student-Athlete of the Year. He is the first UNF athlete to receive this prestigious award. During his time at the University of North Florida, Nathan set school records for the indoor 5,000-meter run and the men’s cross country runs at both 8k and 10k distances. Already named UNF’s scholar-athlete of the year for the fourth consecutive season, he received his degree in psychology with a 3.99 GPA and will continue his education at Stetson University to study law. Craig Dewhurst ‘84 was inducted into the Circle of Gold at Florida State University. The FSU Alumni Association recognizes worthy individuals, who through their service

alumni NOTES and achievements, personify the university’s tradition of excellence. An insurance industry leader and lobbyist for more than 20 years, Craig also serves his community through his work on the boards of the Seminole Boosters Board, Donna Foundation Board, Gator Bowl, and is Chairman of the Committee of Florida Agents. He was selected as a 2020 Seminole 100 honoree. He gives back to students through the Jim King Seminole Heritage Foundation Scholarship, his established Craig Dewhurst Agency FSU Scholarship and various FSU fundraisers under his purview. Jason Bailey ‘98 was appointed as the Commanding Officer of the JSO Canine and Mounted Units. Jason has been with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office since 2005; he was promoted to Sergeant in 2016 and Lieutenant in 2021. Jason oversees 21 canine handlers, four mounted officers, and three supervisors. JSO currently has 22 police dogs and six police service horses. Marc Hassan ’97 was recently appointed to President of the Mandarin Rotary Club of Jacksonville. Marc oversees Spectrum Realty Services, LLC., a property management and real estate brokerage firm. Spectrum is the title sponsor of the Rotary club’s Race to Feed the Hungry 5k which benefits food banks and pantries in the Mandarin community. Marc is also currently serving as Vice Chairman of The Players Championship.

Doug McCormick ‘99 is an Officer with JSO and full-time instructor at the Police Academy. Doug presented the most recent information regarding school safety to our administration, faculty, and staff on 10/5/22.

Carla Harris ‘80 launched her new book Lead to Win, 11/8/22 and spoke at a fundraiser for the Guardian School of Jacksonville to a crowd of 500 people regarding the importance of a Catholic education. She helped raise $950,000 for the Guardian School to continue their legacy of educating the under-privileged in Jacksonville. Terri Devalantes ‘76, founder and owner of Jax Cooking Studio, spent an afternoon cooking with our Family, Career and Community Leaders Club on 1/11/23. The students learned new cooking techniques and enjoyed the snacks they made. Jack Kennedy ’11 graduated from the University of Florida in December of 2022 with a Ph.D. in Neuroscience. Jack plans on staying with UF for the next six months as a post-doctoral assistant while he gains experience for his full-time profession. Grace McCormick ‘20 won the Miss Jacksonville pageant on 1/21/23. Grace is using her reign to promote a social impact initiative, “Let Your Light Shine”, which focuses on seeing abilities rather than disabilities. Chris Davlantes ’11 started Reach Power, Inc., a Silicon Valley startup company that beams electricity wirelessly. It has raised $30 million in funding that will commercialize the products. Reach Power, Inc. was featured in U.S. News and World Report in December 2022. On November 21, 2022, Charles “Chuck” Ford ‘87 was promoted to Assistant Chief of Patrol at the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office on 11/21/22. He will be overseeing patrol operations on the northside area of Jacksonville. Chuck has worked for JSO for over 30 years. He has also served as the security coordinator at BK since 2018. Damon Olinto ’79 received the UNF Alumni Service Award on 2/1/23. The award recognizes alumni who have demonstrated continuous outstanding volunteer service to the

University and meritorious public service on a local, state, national or international level.

Taylor Malewicki ’11 participated in shark research tagging with the University of Miami on 12/14/22. The team tagged two Atlantic sharp nose sharks, three bull sharks and three nurse sharks for research on feeding patterns and migration. Taylor was a member of the 2008 Olympic Diving Team and volunteers with the Mayport Ocean Rescue. Taylor currently teaches Marine Biology at Bishop Kenny and coaches the dive team. Jasmyne Roberts ’21 was named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week on 2/6/23. Jasmyne is a sophomore at the University of Miami, playing guard for the women’s basketball team. This recognition came after she averaged 17 points and 8 rebounds in Miami’s wins over Clemson and Georgia Tech. Jayme Marquez ’19 graduated from the United States Naval Academy in May of 2023. He reported to the U.S.S. Blue Ridge, forward deployed to Commander Fleet Activities Naval Base in Yokosuka, Japan. Chris Joyce ‘16 was awarded the Company Grade Officer of the Quarter award in recognition for excellence in leadership. Chris is currently stationed with the 603rd Air Communications Squadron at Ramstein Air Base in Germany.

Donna Deegan ‘79, Donna Hazouri Deegan ‘79, was the first female mayor elected in the history of Jacksonville. Donna is a breast cancer awareness advocate and former news broadcaster. Dr. Caroline Hoyt-Anderson ’07 and Dr. Don Riederer presented on the topics of polymer chemistry, science and faith, and careers in science to the AP Chemistry classes. Dr. HoytAnderson received her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Florida. She went on to complete an internship on Biomass Destruction at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in New Mexico. Following her work at LANL , she continued her education at Georgia Tech where she received a PHD in Chemistry, then working in Colorado at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory on bio-based plastics synthesis. Dr. Hoyt-Anderson

is happy to be home in Jacksonville, working at Johnson & Johnson as a Senior Chemist.

Faith Connections Rev. Fr. Jason Trull ‘92 was named Vicar General for the Diocese of St. Augustine, 1/20/23. Bishop Pohlmeier is grateful to Fr. Trull for accepting the appointment and looks forward to a close working relationship for the good of the church in the Diocese of St. Augustine. Kaitlyn Manson Dedek ’18 recognized as Youth Minister of the Year and joined Madeline Ward ’18 in receiving the Christus Vivit National Award. On the Solemnity of Christ, the King, November 20, 2022, Pope Francis called for a renewal of the Global Celebration of Young People in every diocese and eparchy. St. Matthew’s Church hosted the diocesan celebration with Bishop Pohlmeier as the celebrant. During the Mass, local youth, nominated by their parish and school, were recognized with the Christus Vivit National Award. These young adults bring Christ to life in their parish and local communities by living and modeling what it means to be a missionary discipline in the world today through Christian service and stewardship, advocacy for those in need, model Christian living, and serve as lights of the world. Salem Farmand ’18 played guitar for St. Patrick’s Cathedral during their Holy Hour of Adoration on 1/4/23. Salem serves as the Campaign Manager at the Roman Archdiocese of New York and Youth Minister at St. Simon Stock - St. Joseph Parish in the South, Bronx.

Stephen Parker ‘12 completed his third year of seminary formation for the Diocese of St. Augustine. After completing his Masters in Philosophy in Miami last spring, Stephen began his theological studies at Theological College of The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. Kalia Smith ‘22 shared her passion for the pro-life movement with the Florida Senate in Tallahassee on 3/20/23. Kalia has been involved with various pro-life organizations for several years and attends many marches and rallies to save the unborn. Dr. Mary Soha ‘75, Chair of the Canonical Coronation Planning Committee and Vice-Postulator for the for the Martyrs of La Florida Missions, delivered an address focused on Our Lady to the administration, faculty, and staff following a Mass celebrated by Fr. Clay in October of 2022. Spanish settlers began the devotion to Our Lady of La Leche at the Mission Nombre de Dios Shrine in St. Augustine. This is only the third time Our Lady of La Leche’s missionary image has been out of the historic chapel. She traveled the Diocese of St. Augustine for one year of public prayer and veneration. Our campus was blessed to host the historical image for veneration for a week in the Bishop Tanner Chapel. After the year, she will travel the United States for another year of continued public prayer and veneration. The tentative plan for the third year is a visit to Spain, where her devotion became most known under the reign of King Philip II.

in MEMORIAM Monsignor Danaher Not all of us have the luck of the Irish, but the Diocese of St. Augustine found its own pot of gold in the treasured priest Monsignor Mortimer Danaher, who pioneered educational advancements while serving both parishioners and the community with his charismatic Irish charm. Known for his Irish brogue, wit, and faithful service that continued well into retirement, Monsignor Danaher passed away on March 29 at 93 after celebrating his 70th anniversary of priestly ordination earlier that month. In 1956, Monsignor Danaher became president of Bishop Kenny High School. That’s where Jerry Weedon, Class of 1966, first met him. “To me, he was a feared but revered school president, who became a close and dear friend as the years went by,” said Weedon. Monsignor Danaher’s legacy extends beyond his notable accomplishments into the more noteworthy impact he had sharing the Gospel. “He served as President of Bishop Kenny High School, was superintendent of Catholic Schools, founded San Jose Parish, and made Christ the King into a stewardship parish,” said Weedon. “More importantly, he showed his people that the way to Jesus was not complicated but simply required a heart full of love and service for God and neighbor.”
