BISHOP McNAMARA HIGH SCHOOL
ANNOUNCES SCHOLARSHIP INVESTMENT FROM THE A. JAMES & ALICE B. CLARK FOUNDATION
Bishop McNamara High School is thrilled and incredibly grateful to announce an investment from the A. James & Alice B. Clark Foundation, the family foundation of late construction pioneer Jim Clark.
The $1,000,000 investment will establish an endowed scholarship fund to support students matriculating from tuition-free schools in Washington, DC, with an emphasis on Catholic middle schools including Washington Jesuit Academy and Washington School for Girls. This fund will help create a broader pipeline of students receiving a rigorous collegepreparatory and Catholic high school education.
Bishop McNamara enrolls 850 students annually with students graduating and attending the nation’s most competitive schools, including American University, Brown, Drexel, Harvard University, Howard University, The University of Maryland, Spelman College, Morehouse, Temple, and so many more.
Bishop McNamara will distribute funds from this endowed scholarship to as many students as possible to ensure access to a high-quality education. This scholarship will exist in perpetuity, guaranteeing funds for a lifetime. Bishop McNamara aims to leverage this investment by encouraging additional scholarship contributions from individuals and institutions, furthering the support provided to students and families accepted to BMHS from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Dr. John Barnhardt, President/CEO of Bishop McNamara, shared, “Because of the Clark Foundation, the future of Bishop McNamara and our commitment to supporting families of all socio-economic backgrounds remains strong. Our school remains a budget-conscious option for the DC region and still operates well below the per-pupil operating level of all public and charter high schools. We look forward to welcoming more students and continuing to provide a world-class Catholic education.”

HSPA Build Design Event Day in CITE Lab at Bishop McNamara: A Celebration of Innovation and Sustainability
On Tuesday, March 12, students from Gonzaga College High School, The Academy of the Holy Cross, Archbishop Carroll High School, and numerous other schools across Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia gathered at the New La Reine Science and Innovation Center’s CITE Lab at Bishop McNamara for the highly anticipated Design and Build Challenge. This annual event, renowned for showcasing creativity and ingenuity, featured young minds testing their skills by constructing models of self-sustainable devices.
The event kicked off with an introduction to the Design Challenge, setting the tone for a day filled with excitement and innovation. Students were briefed on the objectives: to design and build a device that could contribute to a sustainable future. The emphasis was on creativity, practicality, and sustainability, encouraging participants to think outside the box and come up with unique solutions.
Ideation Stage: The morning session was dedicated to brainstorming. Students gathered in teams to discuss and sketch their ideas, guided by their mentors and teachers. The atmosphere was buzzing with enthusiasm as each group sought to identify a problem and conceptualize a device to solve it. This stage was crucial, laying the foundation for the prototypes they would later build.
Prototype Stage: Armed with their ideas, students moved on to the Prototype Stage. Here, they translated their concepts into tangible models using materials provided by the CITE Lab. The state-of-the-art facilities offered everything needed to bring their visions to life. This hands-on experience was not just about building; it was about testing, iterating, and refining their designs. The lab was filled with the sounds of construction, the hum of 3D printers, and the chatter of excited students sharing insights and challenges.
Lunch: A well-deserved break came in the form of a delightful lunch. It was a time for students to relax, network, and share their progress with peers from different schools. The informal setting fostered camaraderie and the exchange of ideas, further enriching the collaborative spirit of the event.
Poster Stage: After lunch, students worked on creating posters to accompany their prototypes. These posters were not just visual aids; they were comprehensive presentations of the students’ design processes, the challenges they faced, and the solutions they devised. This stage allowed students to showcase their communication skills and the depth of their understanding of sustainability.
Judging: With prototypes and posters ready, it was time for the judging panel to evaluate the projects. The panel consisted of experts in science, engineering, and sustainability, who meticulously examined each entry. They considered criteria such as innovation, feasibility, sustainability, and presentation. The students eagerly awaited feedback, hoping their hard work would impress the judges.
Awards: The day culminated in an awards ceremony, celebrating the incredible efforts and achievements of all participants. Awards were given in various categories, recognizing the best designs, most innovative ideas, and exceptional teamwork. The winning teams received accolades and prizes, but every student left with a sense of accomplishment and inspiration.
Stay tuned for more updates and innovations from these brilliant young minds!
Team Jackson created a concept for a community called The Avalon. This centralized living community focused on a sustainable and efficient lifestyle. Key features included a centralized workplace powered by solar panels, solar-powered lights along scenic trails, and an elevated tram public transport system with trains running throughout the community. The design also featured innovative apartment buildings with roofs that were half solar panels and half gardens, promoting both energy efficiency and green living. Walking and bike paths crisscrossed the entire area, ensuring a productive and sustainable living environment.
One remarkable project came from Team Jemison, who addressed the pressing issue of traffic congestion in urban areas. Their project, titled "Red Light Green Light," proposed an innovative solution involving motion sensors to detect incoming cars and alert traffic lights. As one student explained, they "developed a sensor that senses your car as your coming up to a traffic light to give you priority so that the light turns green." This system optimizes traffic flow by turning the traffic lights green after a certain amount of time. The solution was lauded for its cost efficiency, flexible setup, and potential to significantly decrease traffic congestion. Moreover, it promised environmental benefits, a reduction in accidents, and an overall better experience for drivers.
Design and Build Day at the CITE Lab was more than just a competition; it was a testament to the power of young minds to envision and create a better future. The event highlighted the importance of STEM education and the role of innovation in addressing global challenges. As the students departed, they carried with them not just the memories of a thrilling day, but the inspiration to continue their journey of discovery and invention.
The future is bright with their talent and determination leading the way.

Theatre
In March, the BMHS Theatre Program presented The Learned Ladies. The Learned Ladies is a romantic comedy originally written during the French Baroque period by Moliere. This translation is by Richard Wilbur, Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize winner for poetry. Henriette and Clitandre are in love and want to get married. However, her mother objects and wants Henriette to marry the poet, Trissotin, who leads the women in the family in academic pursuits. Henriette’s father tries to plead for his daughter to marry the person she loves, but his strong-willed wife resists. Which will prevail - the heart or the mind?
The BMHS Theatre Department did an amazing job portraying these characters and telling this story. The Learned Ladies was enjoyed by all who attended the play.
The UCFA is dedicated to increasing the number of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) growers of culturally significant heirloom seeds. Recognizing the need for greater diversity in agriculture and the $15 billion U.S. seed industry, the UCFA's mission is both vital and transformative.
Tiara Butler, who leads the visual Arts program at Bishop McNamara, who was originally approached for the project, saw it as a perfect opportunity for a student to launch their career. Demonstrating her commitment to nurturing young talent, Butler offered the project to Johnson, knowing her artistic skill and passion would bring the book to life.
Johnson’s illustrations for “Big Daddy's Greasy Green Collards” not only enhance the narrative but also embody the mission of the UCFA, promoting diversity and cultural heritage vibrantly and engagingly. This opportunity underscores the exceptional education and mentorship available at Bishop McNamara, where students are encouraged to pursue and achieve their artistic dreams. Through this collaborative effort, both Johnson and the UCFA highlight the importance of representation and cultural relevance in literature and agriculture, making a meaningful impact on readers and the broader community.
YOUNG ALUMNI WOMEN IN BROADCASTING
“We have an all-star crew walking through our hallways!” Ms. Keller exclaims, as she sees JC Whittington ‘11, Randi Ayala ‘11 and Breana Ross ‘15. Then greets them with a big hug. Little did she know that was the plan.
Since the early 2000s, Bishop McNamara has made significant strides in enhancing its educational resources for students aspiring to enter the fields of journalism and media. This intentional commitment has proven to be a success, by the achievements of our alumni, who are making their mark in media across the country and even the world. We had the privilege of hosting three of our distinguished local broadcast journalists for an insightful interview.
JC, Randi, and Breana sat down for a podcast-style interview (use the QR code or link to watch their interview in The Van Der Waag Studio located in our LaReine Science and Innovation Center), where they shared their journeys, struggles, lessons learned, and the pivotal role that McNamara played in their careers. Here are some highlights from that compelling
conversation.
JC reflected on her dual roles, emphasizing the importance of versatility in the ever-evolving landscape of journalism. "Being able to adapt and wear multiple hats is crucial," she noted, sharing how her time at McNamara prepared her for the dynamic nature of her work at Politico and Georgetown.
Randi discussed the evolving nature of news reporting and the importance of storytelling. "It's not just about delivering news; it's about connecting with people and telling their stories in a way that resonates," she explained. Her role at WUSA9 has allowed her to bring a diverse range of stories to the forefront, highlighting underrepresented voices in the community.
Breana shared her experiences balancing her reporting duties with her passion for writing children's literature. "It's about finding a balance and using different platforms to make an impact," she said. Her work at WBAL-11 and her children's book reflect her commitment to fostering understanding and empathy among audiences of all ages.
These young women exemplify the spirit of Bishop McNamara alumni, using their talents and voices to shape the world around them. Their achievements are a testament to the school's dedication to nurturing future leaders in journalism and media.
To gain deeper insights into their experiences and the profound influence of Bishop McNamara on their careers, watch the full interview using the QR code or link provided. This candid conversation is an inspiring testament to the power of education, determination, and community in shaping the future of media.
Through their stories, JC, Randi, and Breana offer a glimpse into the vibrant and impactful cohort of McNamara alumni who are making waves in journalism worldwide. Their journeys remind us of the potential within each student to drive change and contribute meaningfully to our society.
Participation and learning in an outdoor environment don't just boost our “nature vitamins” and outlook; they lead to better educational outcomes. When students learn in and about the outdoors, there are improvements in mental health and academic performance. Students connecting to the outdoors have a better sense of community and show stronger civic engagement. It's easy to get attention for this issue with trendy catchphrases like "there's no app for this." But catchphrases aside, putting this into practice has tangible benefits and is a recent initiative at our school. We just established an outdoor classroom on campus that includes seating for 24 students, a whiteboard, and native plants. This space provides a safe and welcoming green area for our students. The classroom is easy to access and for teachers to reserve, even on short notice—classes have already started to use the new space!
The outdoor classroom could potentially be used by nearly all academic subjects. Of course, the sciences can use this for experiential learning, such as measuring temperature differences and the urban heat island effect or documenting the diversity of native plants and pollinators. Photography classes can go on a photo safari, and writing classes can use it for quiet reflection. Religion classes can hold classroom discussions with flexible seating groups. The counseling department and campus ministry classes can visit for contemplation, addressing mental health and stress reduction for students.
An added bonus is the use of native plants to define the space. About 200 plants were selected to fit the habitat (and reflect our maroon and gold school colors)! These plants will soon become well established, requiring less maintenance than traditional landscaping. Wood poppies, columbine, witch hazel, rosey sedge, and sweetspire outline and define the area. These plants will continue to provide habitat, nectar, and pollen for native pollinators such as butterflies and docile mason bees.
We didn't accomplish this alone. Sponsoring agencies include a grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust and a Seeds for Education Grant from Wild Ones. Parent volunteer Diane Beedle with the Community Native Planting Project helped source plants and provided guidance and advice with many volunteer hours. Our organization, the Science and Ecology Explorers Club, and many other student volunteers helped plant and mulch. This will be the place to watch as the plants thrive and grow in the years to come!
Students Have Meaningful Experiences Outside Classroom Walls
Amorah Abdul-Haqq Watts: I really enjoyed this service. It allowed me to be outside and enjoy the sunny weather while also helping my school's environment. I discovered that I enjoy gardening and planting. I look forward to seeing the growth in the upcoming years!
Elle McNeal: I 100% feel like I am making a positive change for our school and community. We can never have too many green spaces, and it’s vital that we can use these spaces while being stewards of the environment.
Simone Shelton: I feel we are making positive changes for our community. I've noticed students asking to go outside in the environment we have created, and I see them feeling more empowered and awake. They are striving better in this environment and are more willing to learn. I want outdoor classrooms to be used for a break for students, but still being able to learn in a relaxed outdoor environment. I would also like it to be a place where people feel they can go without worry.
Juliana Thompson: Overall, I felt very fulfilled and pleased that I was able to contribute to the school community as well as make a difference in the environment. I am hopeful for the future of this school as it will have this new space to grow and explore new ideas and eco-friendly opportunities.
