Dear McNamara Team & Family,
As autumn settles on the Bishop McNamara campus, we are filled with deep gratitude for the incredible milestones we've achieved over the past 60 years. This summer, I took the opportunity to reflect on our school's rich history, the remarkable progress we've made, and the bright future that lies ahead. This past school year was nothing short of extraordinary, culminating in the graduation of the Class of 2024, who joined a distinguished legacy of alumni.
The exceptional Class of 2024 achieved a 100% college acceptance rate and secured over $30 million in scholarships. While celebrating their impressive accomplishments, I was also thrilled to witness the continued success of our alumni. Notably, one of our Class of 2016 alumni earned 2 Bronze medals in the Paris 2024 Olympics this summer!
In expressing my gratitude, I am delighted to share that Bishop McNamara has been recognized as a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School for its academic excellence. This honor reflects our steadfast commitment to educating hearts and minds while serving our community, and we take great pride in it. For 60 years, Bishop McNamara has embodied the spirit of family, respect, and the education of both minds and hearts, while nurturing a community that carries these values into the world and makes a profound impact. Our students' success stories are nothing short of magical, playing a vital role in strengthening our community. From dentists to athletes, from police officers to scientists, our alumni are making a meaningful difference. This Messenger stands as a testament to the many accolades our alumni, students, and staff continue to achieve. We are also deeply grateful for our new board leadership and members, as well as the continued philanthropy that supports our mission. As you flip through these pages, I hope you are immersed in the joy and glory that is Bishop McNamara.

The strength, spirit, and warmth of this community are unmatched, and I have seen time and time again how Bishop McNamara creates opportunities for our students to thrive. Bishop McNamara High School Achieves National Blue Ribbon Status
We are thrilled to announce that Bishop McNamara High School has been recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School for 2024. This prestigious award, bestowed by the U.S. Department of Education, is a testament to our school's commitment to academic excellence and our dedication to nurturing well-rounded students in the Catholic tradition.
What is the National Blue Ribbon School Award?
The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program
is one of the highest honors a school can receive in the United States. Established in 1982, this program recognizes public and private elementary, middle, and high schools for their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.
To be named a National Blue Ribbon School is a mark of excellence that affirms the hard work of students, educators, families, and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging and engaging content.
Significance for Bishop McNamara and Catholic Education in Maryland
This recognition holds special significance for Bishop McNamara and the broader Catholic education community in Maryland. As a Catholic school, we strive not only for academic excellence but also for the spiritual and moral development of our students. The Blue Ribbon award validates our holistic approach to education, which combines rigorous academics with strong faith formation and character development.
For our alumni and current families, this award represents:
• Validation of your choice of education
• Recognition of our faculty's dedication and expertise
• Enhanced opportunities for our students in college admissions and beyond
• Strengthened position of Catholic education in Maryland's educational landscape
A Rare Achievement
The National Blue Ribbon School award is not easily attained, especially for private schools. Bishop McNamara High School's recognition in 2024 marks a significant milestone in Maryland's
Catholic education history. The last Catholic high school in our state to receive this prestigious honor was in 2002, with the previous recipient dating back to 1993. This 22-year gap underscores the exceptional nature of our achievement.
The Blue Ribbon Award is bestowed upon schools that demonstrate excellence in academic performance and student achievement. Our recognition in 2024 not only breaks a twodecade-long wait for Maryland's Catholic high schools but also reaffirms our commitment to educational excellence.
This achievement puts into perspective the magnitude of Bishop McNamara's accomplishment and solidifies our position as a leader in Catholic education in Maryland. It's a testament to the dedication of our faculty, the support of our families, and the hard work of our students over many years.
Looking Forward
As we celebrate this momentous achievement, we remain committed to our mission of empowering leaders grounded in faith. This recognition will serve as a catalyst for continued growth and innovation in our educational programs.
To our alumni: Your ongoing support and the foundation you helped build have made this achievement possible. We hope you share in the pride of this accomplishment.
To our current families: Thank you for entrusting us with your children's education. This award affirms the quality of education your students receive and the bright futures that lie ahead of them.
Together, as the Bishop McNamara community, we will continue to strive for excellence in all aspects of our educational mission, guided by our Catholic values and commitment to forming leaders for our church and our world.
Reflection on 60 Years of Bishop McNamara High School
By Sandy Mammano
In 1962, the Holy Cross Brothers established Bishop McNamara High School in Forestville, Maryland, at a time when the nation was grappling with significant social change. Amid the desegregation of schools, which was met with resistance and uncertainty, the Brothers remained unwavering in their mission: to create a Catholic high school for boys that would stand on four enduring pillars—Bringing Hope, Being Family, Educating Hearts & Minds, and Building Respect.
From the outset, the Holy Cross Brothers welcomed students of all backgrounds, displaying courage and resilience in building a school dedicated to educating the whole person—mind, body, and soul. Their vision continues to inspire today. Joe Hawkins ‘67, reflects on the lasting impact the school had on him during a time of both social upheaval and personal growth. He fondly recalls Bishop McNamara's warm, welcoming environment, likening it to "coming home on a cold winter’s day."
Over the past six decades, Bishop McNamara has experienced its share of challenges and triumphs. The 1970s were characterized by a spirit of determination and rebellion, but also by a profound respect for the school’s values. As society evolved, so did McNamara’s students, preparing to navigate an increasingly complex world.
The 1990s brought a period of uncertainty. Financial difficulties and declining enrollment raised concerns about the future of Bishop McNamara and its sister school, La Reine High School. However, in 1992, thenPresident Brother John Paige, CSC and the Board of Directors made a bold decision: McNamara would become coeducational. Despite the challenges, the Brothers once again demonstrated resilience, opening the doors to young women and embracing a new era in the school’s history.
The late 1990s marked another pivotal moment for McNamara. Mrs. Heather Gossart was appointed as the school's first female president of a Holy Cross school—a groundbreaking achievement in Holy Cross school history. Under her leadership, Bishop McNamara experienced a resurgence. Enrollment grew, financial stability returned, and the school solidified its reputation as a premier Catholic institution in the region. Mrs. Gossart's inspiring leadership was captured in her oft-quoted reminder: "To whom much is given, much will be required" (Luke 12:48), a sentiment she embodied as she guided the school into a new chapter of success.
In 2010, Dr. Marco Clark, class of '85, became the first alumnus president of Bishop McNamara. Building on the success established by Mrs. Gossart, Dr. Clark led the school through a period of growth and achievement through increased enrollment and enhanced financial aid support for families by establishing a culture of scholarship support from alumni. Under his leadership, the varsity locker rooms were renovated, the Andy Mona '82 Student Center was expanded, and he established the vision to bring state-of-the-art science and innovation learning spaces to the school, all while affirming La Reine High School's commitments to science and technology. Dr. Clark's dedication to the school's mission ensured that McNamara continued to thrive both academically and socially.
Today, Dr. John Barnhardt serves as President/CEO, continuing the legacy of visionary leadership. Joining the school during the height of the pandemic, Dr. Barnhardt led the community through the challenges of virtual learning and a safe return to in-person instruction. In his five years of leadership, he has already successfully closed out the Faith. Family. Future! Campaign, built the La Reine Science & Innovation Center, launched a new strategic plan with the community and Board of Directors, laid the groundwork for an exciting campus master plan,, grown investments and endowed accounts to $10M, and launched initiatives in Prince George's County for even greater community growth. Perhaps his proudest achievement to date is Bishop McNamara's recent recognition as a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education—a testament to the school's academic growth and excellence in the wake of the pandemic.
As Bishop McNamara celebrates its 60th anniversary, the school stands stronger than ever. With full staffing, waiting lists for every grade, and solid financial footing, the future looks bright. The legacy of the Holy Cross Brothers has set the school on a path of success, and with bold leadership and ambitious goals, the next 60 years promise to be just as extraordinary.

• Former school President, Br John Paige, CSC, shared insights into Bishop McNamara's growth and evolution.
• The celebration strengthened the bonds within our community, uniting generations of Mighty Macs
Alumni Reflections
The anniversary event was made even more special by the heartfelt reflections shared by our alumni. Here's what some of them had to say about their fondest memories of McNamara:
Class of 1968 - Bob Lynch
Bob Lynch, a graduate of the class of 1968, reflects on his time at a relatively new school with a small enrollment.
"Okay, I'm Bob Lynch, class of '68. Back in '68, this school had only been open for two years. Very small enrollment. One of my best memories—there were many great memories—was probably my senior year, our Senior Retreat. Guys that you kind of knew but really weren't close to, you go away for a few days for the retreat, and you got to know people a whole lot better. The faculty was great. The spring concert show was great, and that's my special moment."
- Robert "Bob" Lynch '68
Class of 1984Tawanda Allen Burse
Tawanda Allen Burse celebrated Bishop McNamara's 60th anniversary and marked her 40th year since graduating from La Reine High School.
"I am so honored to be here today on Bishop McNamara's 60th anniversary. My name is Tawanda Allen Burse, and I graduated from La Reine High School in 1984. My fondest memory of La Reine is when I was taking a home economics class, and we were cooking, but we ran out of ingredients. So, I got sent to the convent where the nuns lived to get some milk and eggs. Not being a Catholic, I was amazed when I walked in and saw the lounge chairs they had. When I opened the refrigerator, it was full of food! At that moment, I thought, ‘Maybe I want to be a nun one day.’ That’s one of my fondest memories.
What brought me back today is to recognize this important period in McNamara's history. I'm also a proud parent of a 2025 graduate, and over the past four years, I've done everything I can to support the school. I'm really honored that my daughter chose the same school I attended for her high school. I'm just really excited to be here celebrating McNamara's 60th anniversary, and this year also marks my 40th anniversary of graduating from La Reine High School. Thank you."
- Tawanda Allen Burse LR '84
Class of 1999 - Brian Larkin
Brian Larkin ’99, a former Bishop McNamara High School board member, fondly recalls the family-like atmosphere and strong sense of community at the school.
"My name is Brian Larkin, class of 1999 and a former Bishop McNamara High School board member. I'm here with my middle school children, Brian Jr. and Jana. My fondest memories of McNamara were of the family environment at the school—such a close-knit community. People really looked out for each other, and teachers really cared for you, like Mrs. Diehlmann, who is still here doing amazing things. Happy 60th anniversary, and I wish the school many more years of success, keeping that close family environment."
Br John Paige, CSC
Brother John Page, a former president of Bishop McNamara High School, reflects on the historic transition of the school from an all-boys to a coeducational institution in 1992.
"My name is Brother John Page. I'm a Holy Cross Brother, and I was privileged to serve as the second president here at Bishop McNamara High School from 1989 to 1996. Those were historic years because the Archdiocese of Washington was wondering what to do with our Catholic high schools in Prince George's County. After a lot of decision-making, they elected to have Bishop McNamara High School become co-educational, while La Reine High School would close. We welcomed any of the faculty, staff, and students from La Reine who wanted to join us here at the new co-educational Bishop McNamara. I was privileged to be president during that time. Those were complicated times, obviously, but being back today for McNamara's 60th anniversary in Prince George's County is a wonderful thing.
At the time, there were discussions about moving the school out further into the suburbs, perhaps to Waldorf or La Plata. But the Brothers of Holy Cross said, 'We have a ministry here in Prince George's County. We need a Catholic religious school for the young men and women here,' and we stayed. That decision was historic and good, allowing the Congregation of Holy Cross to continue sponsoring Bishop McNamara High School.
- Brian Larkin '99
Today, with almost 900 students and all these wonderful new facilities, McNamara is a tribute to those tough decisions. I’m happy to be here to celebrate 60 years. I may not be an alumnus or a parent, but I’m proud to be connected to this school. Currently, I’m relatively local at King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, another Holy Cross-sponsored institution. So, we love the opportunity to connect between Holy Cross high schools like Bishop McNamara and colleges like King’s. Happy 60th anniversary to everyone associated with Bishop McNamara and La Reine High Schools. This new 21st-century Bishop McNamara is truly a school for the future."
- John Paige, CSC
Class of 2009Armani MasonCallaway
Staff member and alumnus Armani Mason-Callaway talks about giving back to the McNamara community.
"My name is Armani Mason Callaway. I’m a Bishop McNamara alum from the class of 2009, and I came back because, well, number one, I work here, but I also came back to give back to the community that gave so much to me. I want to contribute to giving future Mustangs the same experience I had here."
- Armani Mason Callaway '09
Class of 2028 - Grandparents of Bryce Briscoe
The grandparents of Bryce Briscoe ’28 express their admiration for the advanced technology at the school, such as the 3D printer.
"We’re the grandparents of Bryce Briscoe, class of 2028. We’re fascinated by all the new technology at the school and all they’ve accomplished here. I wish we had this when we were growing up. We just left the (3D) printer room, and it was amazing to see what you can do with the technology. The school is really awesome!"
- Grandparents of Bryce Briscoe '28
Class of 2007 - Donisha Bolds
Donisha Bold talks about McNamara’s sense of community.
"My name is Donisha Bolds. I graduated in the class of 2007. My favorite thing about McNamara is the sense of community I felt while I was here. I’ve made lifelong friends, and I came back today because my daughter is an eighth grader and hopefully a rising freshman here at McNamara. Go Mustangs!"
- Donisha Bold '07
Class of 2007 - Jessica Tompkins
Jessica Tompkins, formerly Jessica Gaines, reflects on her time at McNamara, where she experienced a strong sense of family and community.
"Hi, I'm Jessica Tompkins, formerly Jessica Gaines, and I graduated in 2007. McNamara was always a place of family and community that I hadn’t experienced anywhere else in life. I was diagnosed with cancer my junior year and went through treatments in both my junior and senior years. Throughout the entire experience, McNamara supported me—my friends, the staff, everyone. They visited me in the hospital, and they cared for me. While cancer is not a favorite memory, the love and support I received from the McNamara community helped me get through it all. Now, I have an eighth grader, so hopefully, he’ll be a ninth grader and a Mustang soon."

Tiara's motto, "I might be their first introduction to how great God is," reflects her dedication to positively impacting her students' lives. Her connection to Bishop McNamara is significant, as her younger brother Terrence Butler was an alum from the class of '21 and died by suicide in 2023. She strives to honor his legacy in the school and the wider community. In response to the tragedy, Tiara transformed their pain into purpose with the support of her mother and sister. TALENT IN THE ARTS
Dr. Kamil Hazel (Director of Theatre)
Dr. Hazel is thrilled to make her directorial debut at Bishop McNamara, where she serves as the Theatre Director. Raised in Southern California, her journey into the world of acting began at an early age when she landed a small role in Shelly Garrett's renowned play “Beauty Shop”. This experience ignited her passion for theater, leading her to pursue a career in acting. Throughout high school, she honed her skills with small roles on popular sitcoms during the vibrant '90s era while also participating in local theater productions.
After high school, Dr. Hazel continued to follow her passion for the arts at Howard University's College of Fine Arts. During her time at Howard, she had the privilege of taking master classes with esteemed alumna Phylicia Rashad and even studied at the University of Oxford through their Summer Program.
For over two decades, Dr. Hazel has dedicated herself to teaching theater, emphasizing the importance of the arts in education. She firmly believes that every role in theater contributes to the success of a production, and she strives to instill this understanding in her students. Dr. Hazel played a pivotal role in establishing a Fine Arts department at a local D.C. charter high school, where she served as a leader in the arts for 14 years before being recruited as a school director for an elementary/middle arts-based school in Southern California. She has been nominated for and received several awards for her work with students, including the Mayor's Award for Arts Teaching, with additional recognition from the D.C. Charter Board.
Dr. Hazel holds an M.A. in Educational Leadership from Cal State Fullerton and earned her Ed.D. from the University of Southern California, also with a focus on Educational Leadership. Alongside her commitment to education, she is a working actor and writer. However, her true passion lies in educating, directing, and inspiring future generations in the arts.

BMHS 5K for the Arts: A Celebration of Community and Creativity
On October 5, 2024, the Bishop McNamara High School community gathered at Fort Washington State Park in Maryland for the annual BMHS 5K for the Arts fundraiser. With a crisp autumn breeze and the vibrant colors of fall as the backdrop, the event brought together students, families,
A RACE FOR A CAUSE
alumni, faculty, and friends in support of the school's renowned arts programs, which include visual arts, music, dance, and theater.
Participants of all ages assembled at the starting line, united by their shared enthusiasm for the race and its purpose. The morning began with an energetic pre-race warm-up, led by Mocha
Lee, a Fitness & Wellness Expert and alumni parent of Justice McDaniel. Her engaging routine had everyone moving and excited for the challenge ahead. As laughter and cheers filled the air, runners, walkers, and joggers alike set off on the scenic course, propelled by a sense of camaraderie and school spirit.
The BMHS 5K for the Arts is more than just a race—it’s a celebration of creativity and the role of the arts in education. The funds raised directly support Bishop McNamara’s Arts Department, providing vital resources, supplies, and opportunities for students to explore and develop their artistic talents.
“The fine arts program at McNamara is the heartbeat of the community,” shared Dr. Barnhardt, President of Bishop McNamara. “Events like this 5K bring people together across generations. We have grandparents, alumni, former students, and current families all coming together to celebrate. McNamara is a community of learners, a community of people, and today was all about fitness and the arts. I challenge our students to beat me every year, and while I got beaten again (by a student), it was a great race for a wonderful cause.”
Dr. Barnhardt’s words underscore the significance of this event not only as a fundraiser but also as a unifying force within the McNamara family, showcasing the power of community and creativity.
GRATITUDE AND REFLECTIONS
Principal Dian Carter also expressed her pride in the day’s events. “This is my seventh 5K,” Mrs. Carter shared.
“I’m always excited to support the Fine Arts Department. They produce such beautiful productions, and it’s always a pleasure to give back to them.”
In an interview with Kennedy Ben ‘25, Mrs. Carter reflected on the importance of the event:
POST-RACE FESTIVITIES
Q: What do events like this do for the school community?
A: Events like this bring the community together. I had the opportunity to talk with students, parents, and my colleagues on my walk—because I did not run—but it’s a great day. It was beautiful weather today, and events like this are always welcoming and warm. It’s a great time for us to be together as ourselves.
The day was a true testament to the strength and unity of the BMHS family—a family committed to fostering creativity, community, and educational excellence.
After the race, participants gathered to enjoy post-race festivities, which included food, music, and arts-related activities for families. From students interviewing participants to live performances, the event provided everyone with a chance to experience the vibrant talent within the BMHS community.
Dana Shieh, Director of Fine Arts & F.A.D.E. Advisor, echoed these sentiments: “We are out here to celebrate the Fine Arts at Bishop McNamara High School. You can see all the people behind me, all supporting us. We have a wonderful community. We are raising money for the fine arts programs and our students. It brings us all together and shows the students how much support they have, not just emotionally but also financially through donations.”
The post-race gathering reflected the incredible enthusiasm for supporting the arts and strengthening the bonds of the BMHS family.

Bishop McNamara Graduate Jason Reynolds '00 Awarded
Bishop McNamara High School graduate Jason Reynolds ‘00 has been recognized by the MacArthur Foundation for his extraordinary talent and creativity “depicting the rich inner lives of kids of color and ensuring that they see themselves and their communities in literature.” Jason is an award-winning author of bestselling children's and young adult literature and a tremendous source of inspiration for the BMHS community.
Often referred to as the “Genius Grant,” the MacArthur Fellowship is a five-year $800,000 no-strings-attached grant designed to “provide recipients with the flexibility to pursue their own artistic, intellectual, and professional activities without obligations or reporting requirements,” according to the program's

Jason Reynolds is a #1 New York Times bestselling author of many awardwinning books, including Look Both Ways: A Tale Told in Ten Blocks, All American Boys (with Brendan Kiely), Long Way Down, Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You (with Ibram X. Kendi), Stuntboy, in the Meantime (illustrated by Raúl the Third), and Ain’t Burned All the Bright (with artwork by Jason Griffin). “The 2024 MacArthur Fellows pursue rigorous inquiry with aspiration and purpose,” explained Marlies Carruth, Director of the MacArthur Fellows Program. She further describes the fellows by saying, “They expose biases built into emerging technologies and social systems and fill critical gaps in the knowledge of cycles that sustain life on Earth. Their work highlights our shared humanity, centering the agency of disabled people, the humor and histories of Indigenous communities, the emotional lives of adolescents, and perspectives of rural Americans.”

He published several poetry collections before his first novel, When I Was The Greatest, in 2014. He won the Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe Award for New Talent for this first work of prose and seven more novels followed in the next four years, including Ghost (2016) and two more books in what became his New York Times best-selling Track series, Patina (2017) and Sunny (2018); As Brave As You (2016), winner of the 2016 Kirkus Prize, the 2017 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work for Youth/Teen, and the 2017 Schneider Family Book Award; and a Marvel Comics novel called Miles Morales: SpiderMan (2017). He has authored and co-authored more than 20 books during his career.
According to Jason, he writes to fill a void he experienced as a young Black boy from Oxon Hill, Maryland, who seldom saw communities like his depicted in the books he was encouraged to read at school. With a poet’s ear for rhythm and a storyteller’s sense of narrative pacing and structure, Reynolds weaves humor, joy, and playfulness into his works. At the same time, he does not shy away from depicting the challenging realities of racism, economic inequity, police brutality, and grief for his

Reynolds’ body of work includes numerous other novels, co-authored works of nonfiction, and collaborations with artists on picture books and graphic novels. Beyond the page, he is a dynamic champion of storytelling who inspires reluctant readers and the adults who teach and care for them. He travels to schools, libraries, and community centers in cities and small towns across the nation to connect with kids at their level and remind them that their narratives hold important truths and are worthy of appearing on the pages of the books we all read. As an inventive author and captivating speaker, Reynolds ensures that kids see themselves in literature and empowers them to tell their own stories.
Last year, he won a Caldecott Honor for his first book for young children, “There Was a Party for Langston,” about the Harlem Renaissance writer Langston Hughes, and has also won the Newbery Award. His latest, “24 Seconds From Now,” about two Black teens falling in love, was released Oct. 8.
Bishop McNamara High School alumna Nicole Yeargin, '16, continues to make her Mustang family proud, winning two bronze medals for Team Great Britain’s 4x400m relay teams. Born on August 11, 1997, Nicole’s journey from Forestville, Maryland, to the Olympic podium is a testament to her resilience, dedication, and unyielding determination.
Nicole's athletic journey was anything but typical. During her time at Bishop McNamara, she excelled in gymnastics, soccer, and even American football, where she kicked field goals. Yet, it wasn’t until her senior year that she discovered her true passion for track and field. Despite starting her senior year, Nicole quickly made her mark, achieving personal bests in the 200 meters and 400 meters by 2019. Reflecting on her time at McNamara, she credits the school's supportive environment and her diverse sports background for helping her develop resilience. "You know, I think my time at Bishop McNamara really helped me excel to the highest level of my sport. I played a different sport every year—diving, soccer, gymnastics, and football, and I joined the track team my senior year. It helped me develop resilience. Even when you're at the bottom, there’s always more to come."
After McNamara, Nicole studied real estate development at the University of Southern California, where she continued to hone her track skills. Her Scottish heritage, through her mother, allowed her to represent Scotland on the international stage. In May 2020, she was officially cleared to compete for Scotland, leading to opportunities like her recent Olympic success.
Reflecting on her experience at McNamara, Nicole said, "I chose McNamara in the beginning because a lot of my friends from middle school were going there. What made

From kicking field goals on McNamara’s football field to standing on the Olympic podium, Nicole Yeargin exemplifies the Mustang spirit—strong, determined, and always striving for greatness. Her story serves as an inspiration to current and future Bishop McNamara students, reminding them that with passion and hard work, anything is possible. She also spoke fondly of her coach, "Sonny Hicks '11 was amazing. He allowed me to have fun with the sport, and that’s something I carry with me today. At the SHARE food warehouse, Bishop McNamara students took on the crucial task of food distribution. Their efforts included:
Packing food items for distribution throughout Montgomery County
Supporting local families facing food insecurity
Learning about the broader issues of hunger and poverty in our community
This experience highlighted the importance of addressing basic needs in our society and the impact that dedicated service can have.
These diverse service activities reflect Bishop McNamara's dedication to forming compassionate, socially responsible individuals. By engaging in these experiences, our students not only make a positive impact on their community but also develop a deeper understanding of social issues and the importance of active citizenship.
