A Word With Bishop McNamara High School’s President/CEO In some way all of us have been the beneficiaries of someone else’s love, belief, cultivation, mentorship, and support. When I entered Bishop McNamara as a student in the early ‘80s, I was filled with insecurity and doubt. Through the guidance and mentorship from the Holy Cross Brothers and a dynamic and caring faculty and staff, the dream to attend a top-tier college or university was planted deeply in my heart, cultivated, and grew to become a reality. More importantly, the belief that this amazing group of people had in me helped to strengthen my own belief and gave me hope in my future. Planting seeds of hope and belief is exactly what this school continues to do today. Our success in the past has placed us on an extraordinary path—but if we are to achieve our full potential we need to empower today’s students and faculty and make available the resources to achieve the meaningful mission of preparing Christian leaders for a better future. As I now begin my 20th year on the faculty at Bishop McNamara, my commitment to cultivating hope in the hearts and minds of our students, faculty and staff has never been greater. Together we can be the change that we want to see in the world.

As a student, I couldn’t appreciate the importance of donor support. As an alumnus and board member, I now see how critical it is to our School and our students. Support from donors makes it possible for Bishop McNamara High School to deliver a diverse selection of high-quality educational, artistic and athletic programs that provide an exceptional experience for our students. Without this support, the School would have to sacrifice the quantity and/or quality of these programs. Because of the generosity of our donors, all of the Bishop McNamara High School programs are first class.

A YEAR in REVIEW Faculty, Staff and Administration Tierra Jolly ‘00 attended the Legends and Leadership Awards Gala, where she received the prestigious “Rising Democrat” award. She was recognized for her hard work and dedication in her field and to her chosen political party. Justin McClain ‘00 wrote an article that became published in the Summer 2015 edition of the Archdiocese of Atlanta Newsletter: “Parish Connection.” The article, which is entitled “Journeying in Faith, Diversity in the Church, and Unity in Christ,” portrays Justin’s open and honest perspective on diversity in the Catholic faith. Director of Faculty Development Charlie Shryock IV was invited to deliver a presentation to a group of teachers at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. He was able to present on the programs being utilized at Bishop McNamara, as well as learn what programs are currently underway at other schools. Phillip San Gabriel ‘04 returned to Bishop McNamara High School as our Conductor for Musical Performances. After graduating from Howard University with both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in music education, Phillip’s career has included work in the District of Columbia and Prince George’s County Public Schools systems. Kathryn Heneghan, Fine Arts Teacher and Assistant Fine Arts Department Chair, had her art showcased in Artomatic 2015, a sixweek long art festival in Prince George’s County. President/CEO Dr. Marco Clark ‘85 was inducted into the Creighton University Alpha Sigma Nu Jesuit Honor Society. Membership into this society is the highest honor that Creighton University confers. Coach Keith Goganious attended the 2016 NFL-NCAA Coaches Academy. Only 30 former NFL players with at least 5 years’ head coaching experience at the high school level or currently coaching collegiate athletics are permitted to attend. Coach Goganious was also featured in a video produced by CSN about concussion risk in football. BMHS Coordinator for Holy Cross Faculty Formation, Adam Greer, was accepted to the Summer Teacher Institute 2016: Experiencing and Teaching about World Religions. Dr. Nigel Traylor, Assistant Principal and Academic Dean for Bishop McNamara High School, led the 5th Annual Archdiocese of Washington High School Principals Association’s Student Academic Symposium on March 9 at The Catholic University of America.

Angela Noland ‘04 was welcomed back to campus as our new Administrative Assistant for Admissions and Fine Arts. Junior class counselor Kristian Owens, MSW, LCSW-C, CTS ‘05 was invited to collaborate with first lady Michelle Obama’s Reach Higher Initiative for the “mock” college application she developed for students. Michael Pozniak, beloved faculty member and Chair of the Social Studies Department, was awarded the Lead. Learn. Proclaim. Award from the National Catholic Educational Association.

Students In commemoration of September 11th, Jordan Embrack ‘19 and the Washington Performing Arts’ Children of the Gospel Choir performed live on WUSA 9 morning news. Mustang Quarterback Ramar Williams ‘16 threw for 276 yards on Sept. 12 during the win over Liberty Christian Academy. With his performance, he passed both Joe Haden (#3), Friendly - 7371 yards and Billy Cosh (#2), Arundel - 7433 for #2 passing in Maryland state history. Over summer break, Ileana Fenwick ‘16 and Damon Jenkins ‘16 both had the opportunity to participate in a coveted internship at the National Aquarium in Baltimore. Charles Kelly ‘17, wide receiver and backup quarterback for Bishop McNamara’s football team, was named DC Touchdown Club’s High School Player of the Week. Mayra Fernandez-Martinez ‘16 was selected as the first of three Rotary “Young American” Award Winners for the year. Jordan Holder ‘17 and Carlos Yovany Saravia ‘19 participated in the annual Shepherd Foundation Mass and Celebration. Jordan was a lector during the mass, while Yovany was the student keynote speaker. The Bishop McNamara High School Lady Mustangs basketball team participated in the prestigious and challenging Nike Tournament of Champions. The tournament is universally considered the greatest high school basketball event in the world. While the Lady Mustangs were in sunny Arizona, the boys basketball team was in Lewes, Del. on Dec. 27 participating in the Slam Dunk to the Beach Tournament. Saturday, Dec. 5 the BMHS Bands participated in the WAMTC Band Festival. The Concert and Symphonic Bands both received overall ratings of “Excellent” with “Superior” in Sight-Reading. Wind Ensemble received “Superior” ratings from the judges.

This May, Elise Mack ‘18 and Jasmine Jackson ‘18 attended the Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Maryland State Leadership Symposium. The symposium is designed for high school sophomores to recognize their leadership abilities and apply them in becoming effective, ethical leaders in their home, school, workplace and community. Julia Kalshoven ‘16, previously recognized for her work with the Rho Kappa National Honor Society, received not only a nomination from Maryland Senator Barbara Mikulski to attend the United States Naval Academy, but also a National Merit Scholarship. The scholarship recognizes and honors students in the United States for their academic talent and promotes wider and deeper respect for learning as a whole. Mock Trial is an academic team which competes against private and public schools in Circuit 7 of Prince George’s, Charles, Calvert and St. Mary’s counties. The BMHS team went undefeated in the regular season and was ranked #2 in Circuit 7. This year’s team was comprised of all underclassmen with no experienced attorney members, making their success particularly outstanding. Gabriela Grant ‘16 was named winner of one of the five Young American Scholarships. The scholarship was issued by the Prince George’s County Rotary Club. BMHS celebrated our 50th Annual Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 27 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Out of our 224 graduates for the class of 2016, two of them (Julia Kalshoven ‘16 and Ramar Williams ‘16) received appointments to the United States Naval Academy – which accepts only 7% of its 20,000 applicants each year. On June 2, our own Raina Cooper ‘17 was named CTV’s Athlete of the Week. Raina is an honor student who plays center field for the Lady Mustangs Varsity Softball.

Around Campus As part of our Senior Speaker Series, on Sept. 16 Col. (ret.) Jasey Briley ‘77 arrived on campus. He spoke to our Senior Class about his military career and how influential Bishop McNamara was for him. During the week of Sept. 22-24 His Holiness, Pope Francis, paid a visit to our nation’s capital. Some of our students, faculty and staff were able to make the trip into Washington, D.C. to see the pope. Many students took pictures, some students were interviewed as part of a video from ABC 7 News. Some of our students even shook the pope’s hand! Francine Amos Hardy, of our Fine Arts Department, was asked to play oboe in the ensemble during the Papal Mass.

On Sept. 27, Bishop McNamara High School hosted international dancer Daniel Harder of the Ailey II dance company. Harder gave instruction and advice to some of our dance students and detailed his experiences as a professional dancer. Science teacher Ms. Saiedeh Khalili and theology teacher/Campus Minister of Mission Peter Sanneman received honors from the Archdiocese of Washington High School Principals Association (HSPA). Ms. Khalili was named Veteran Teacher of the Year, while Mr. Sanneman was named the New Teacher of the Year. BMHS was awarded the Prince George’s County Beautification Award for our Memorial Garden. Named in honor of student Terrell Edelen ‘14, the garden provides a serene place for our community to have the opportunity to honor deceased loved ones, family, friends and/or teachers. During our 2015 Homecoming celebration, Bishop McNamara was presented with the NFL Golden Football Award. The award, presented to BMHS by Tyoka Jackson ‘89, was issued to schools whose alumni participated in Super Bowl history as head coaches or players. For the second year, Mr. Michael Blake, Director of the Jazz and Contemporary Programs at the prestigious Joffrey Ballet, traveled from New York City to give a master class and audition the upperlevel students in the Bishop McNamara High School Classical Dance Program. On Jan. 26, students had an opportunity to earn a scholarship to the Summer Intensive at the Joffrey Ballet School. This year the 5K for the Arts was an overwhelming success! In total, participants raised approximately $82,000 for the Fine Arts Department. On March 8, Bishop McNamara High School hosted Dr. Dennis Layendecker, Director of the School of Music at George Mason University and retired conductor of the U.S. Air Force Band in Washington, D.C. Dr. Layendecker provided insight and a musical clinic to help our Symphonic Band prepare for their performance during the Prince George’s County Music Festival. Monday, April 25, Bishop McNamara High School hosted Planetary Ice Expert from the University of Maryland College Park, Dr. Derrick Lampkin. Thanks to our Science and Ecology Explorers Club, Dr. Lampkin arrived on campus to speak to our students and faculty about climate and energy. Thank you to everyone who attended our Mustang Cup/Sip & Swing event! Thanks to our attendees, we raised more than $30,000 in support of the School.

SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS Aaron Gene (AG) Marshall ‘14 Memorial Scholarship

Named in memory of beloved alumni, Aaron Gene (AG) Marshall ‘14, this scholarship is awarded to a student who has an interest and participates in the performing acts programs at Bishop McNamara and/ or in the community.

BMHS Fine Arts Fund The Fine Arts Programs are African Dance and Music, Band and Orchestra, Dance, Theatre, and Visual Arts. Without your support, they could not exist.

The Bridge of Hope Fund In 2010, President/CEO Dr. Marco J. Clark ‘85 created the Bridge of Hope Fund. This fund is an emergency source of financial aid for our senior families who experience an economic crisis or financial hardship during their child’s last year.

The Brother David Andrews, C.S.C. Scholarship This scholarship pays homage to the first President of Bishop McNamara High School, Brother David Andrews, C.S.C. Through his commitment to service, dedication to Holy Cross and strict adherence to rigorous academic curriculum, Brother David put Bishop McNamara on its path to excellence.

Byrne and Osborne Family Scholarship The Byrne and Osborne Family Scholarship was established to honor the lives and memory of John and Doris Byrne and James and Lucille Osborne by their 15 children in thanksgiving for the faith and education their parents provided them.

Eugenia “Toni” Millner Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is endowed by the family and friends of the much beloved and distinguished faculty member Mrs. Toni Millner. It is offered annually to a young man or woman who demonstrates those qualities of academic effort, co-curricular involvement and service to others.

Herndon Family Art Scholarship The Herndon Family Art Scholarship shall be presented annually to a rising senior at Bishop McNamara High School at the discretion of an Art Instructor. The young woman or man who receives this $500 scholarship must exhibit a love for and commitment to the visual arts and remain in good academic standing.

Keith L. Miller Scholarship The Keith L. Miller scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman football player who exemplifies the same mental strength, passion, skill and dedication to football as did Keith L. Miller ‘89 for whom this scholarship is named.

Michael J. Mammano Memorial Scholarship The Michael J. Mammano Memorial Scholarship shall be presented annually to a rising senior at Bishop McNamara High School who is a member of the school’s varsity football team.

Roscoe C. Perkins, Jr. Aeronautical Scholarship The Roscoe C. Perkins, Jr. Aeronautical Scholarship Award will be presented annually to a young man or woman who has exhibited academic excellence in the field of science, mathematics or engineering.

Saint Andre Bessette Tuition Assistance Fund The Saint Andre Bessette Tuition Assistance Fund is utilized to assist our freshman, sophomore, and junior families who encounter unexpected financial hardship.

Sister Sharon Kozuch Memorial Scholarship This scholarship was founded in honor of Sister Sharon Kozuch and is offered to an 11th grade woman who exemplifies the qualities of faith, enthusiasm for learning and co-curricular participation, and demonstrates financial need.

CAROL WELTEROTH MARVIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Stewartship Legacy Scholarship

This scholarship is endowed by the Marvin family and is presented annually to an 8th grade student who has been accepted into Bishop McNamara High School, and who has by their personal witness, academic integrity and faith in action enriched their church, school and community.

This scholarship, endowed by the Stewart family, is awarded annually to a young woman or man at Bishop McNamara High School who exudes daily the ideals of faith, leadership and service.

Connie Oliver Scholarship Mr. Ira Oliver endows this scholarship in memory of his wife, Connie. This scholarship is presented annually to a Bishop McNamara High School football player who has exhibited excellence in the classroom and on the competition field.

Unforgettable Spirit Randell Duncan Memorial Scholarship In memory of their classmate, Randell Duncan, the BMHS Class of 2000 endows this scholarship. This scholarship is presented to a sophomore or junior student who develops a solution for youth and/or young adult violence so that we can all make the necessary steps towards peace.

Erin Ashley Mercer Scholarship

Kevin O’Neil scholarship

This scholarship is endowed by the Mercer Foundation in honor and memory of their daughter Erin Mercer and is awarded annually to a Bishop McNamara High School student who demonstrates the qualities of faith, scholarship, leadership and service.

The Kevin E. O’Neil (KEO) Scholarship will be awarded annually to a male student at Bishop McNamara High School in memory of Kevin O’Neil through a scholarship established by his family and Passports to College, Inc.

PROJECT PRIDE SCHOLARSHIPS The Project PRIDE Program was established as an admissions inclusion program to assist our most profoundly at risk students. The purpose of the program is to begin work with 9th grade students.

Bettie J. Sugars Perseverance Scholarship

Holy Cross Brothers Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a sophomore student who is committed to success despite any challenges they may encounter. The student embodies the same spirit as the scholarship namesake, Bettie J. Sugars.

This scholarship is awarded to a sophomore who, through their personal example of conduct, self-discipline and service, demonstrates those ideals of what a Holy Cross School seeks to be.

Integritas Scholarship

The Charles R. & Doris M. Marvin scholarship is presented to a Project Pride student who has made great strides in their academic success.

This scholarship is presented to a junior who shows him or herself to be an example of integrity, character, and strives towards completeness.

Domenick N. & jacquelin h. Ruggiero Service Scholarship

Lamberth/Muldrow Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates an exemplary effort to serve both the BMHS community and larger local community as a student volunteer.

The Frederick and Matilde Durling Memorial Scholarship This scholarship shall be presented annually to two (2) students at Bishop McNamara High School who are enrolled in the St. Joseph Program.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Focusâ&#x20AC;? Scholarship This scholarship is presented to a freshman student who has demonstrated and sustained positive motivation toward learning throughout their first academic year of high school.

General Steve Stevens Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is endowed in memory of Bishop McNamara friend and patron General Steve Stevens and is offered to one or more students who exemplify qualities of scholarship, leadership and community involvement.

Harmon Alumni Scholarship This scholarship is presented to a student entering his/her senior year who demonstrates a love of learning, and has served and represented the School with character, honor and zeal.

Heather Gossart Project PRIDE Scholarship This scholarship is offered to one or more 9th grade students who have been accepted into the Project PRIDE academic inclusion program who demonstrates verifiable financial need. The scholarship is annually renewable and progressively reassessed.

This scholarship is presented in honor of Mrs. Ressie K. Lamberth and Mrs. Mary B. Muldrow to a freshman student.

Leona Beatrice McClain Scholarship This scholarship is presented to a student who aims to serve others in his/her community, embraces a life of faith and has a drive to further himself/herself through educational achievement.

Reginald J. Brady Scholarship Presented in honor of Mr. Reginald J. Brady, this scholarship is for those whose dedication and commitment to excellence in working with Bishop McNamara is evident in our school community.

Scholar-Athlete Scholarship The scholarship for scholar-athlete is presented a to a student who has demonstrated the discipline and focus to pursue both high school athletics and excellence in the classroom.

Traylor/Dubois and the Willa Benning Scholarship Created by Dr. Nigel Traylor to honor the Traylor, Dubois and Benning families and their commitment to education, this scholarship is awarded to a student who strives for academic excellence and perseveres despite adversity.

Walter C. Van der Waag Scholarship Established by Principal, Dr. Robert Van der Waag, this scholarship honors his father, Walter and is awarded to a student that displays a hard work-ethic and strong belief in the value of education similar to that of Mr. Van der Waag.

The Bishop McNamara Faith. Family. Future! Capital Campaign has come a long way in just two short years. We have had an incredible start to this campaign; after traveling around the country and meeting with business leaders and alumni, including author of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series Jeff Kinney ’89 and the Kinney Family Foundation, we have raised $3 million towards our fundraising initiatives. We are pleased to announce that we are prepared to break ground on January 26th, 2017 for the construction of the Andy Mona ’82 Student Center, and on September 14, 2017 we will host a dedication ceremony to celebrate its completion. Vincent “Cap” and Christina Mona, along with the entire Mona family, have engaged with Bishop McNamara High School to help fund this meaningful and permanent way to honor Andy’s spirit and legacy. Thanks to generous grant funding, the Student Center will include a modern classroom that will allow students to not only incorporate the latest technology into their lessons and activities, but will also allow them to broaden the scope and impact of their projects beyond the Bishop McNamara community.
