A Word With Bishop McNamara’s President/CEO

What have been the major event milestones in Bishop McNamara’s past 50 years? When I think about Bishop McNamara’s last 50 years, I think about the School’s spirit of resiliency – from the turbulent time of the 60s when we were founded, to our growth cycle in the 70s and 80s, to more trying times in the late 80s and early 90s. There is also the decision that I think ultimately made Bishop McNamara the ‘modern McNamara’ that it is today, which was the decision to go co-educational. From that point forward it’s been nothing but improvement. We’re the largest private school in Prince George’s County and third largest in the Archdiocese of Washington. We have a long waiting list every year with 700-800 applicants annually. In the last fifteen years we’ve undergone more than $15 million in renovations and made the new additions of the Fine Arts and Athletics Center, the new athletic field, the Moreau Chapel, renovations to the Brothers’ Wing for classroom and office use, expansion of the St. Joseph Library, complete renovations of the two computer labs as well as upgraded technology in every classroom.

How has donor giving and generosity influenced the School’s curriculum and programs? First and foremost there’s a lot of love and appreciation for the education that so many of us received here. There is also a lot of belief and confidence in the future. Donor giving and alumni giving are critical. Probably what’s most critical about alumni giving is the percentage of participants who give back to the School. Not so much the dollar amount – because the percentage itself sends very loud messages of confidence and support from our donors.

As an alumnus, how do you personally view the changes that you’ve seen the School go through? I often joke that I’m not so sure that I would have gotten in here today! I think that the academic rigor, the really strong sense of community, the high level of faculty support, and the expansion of the arts are all significant changes. But what makes me most proud to walk these halls is the same spirit of charity, generosity and family. That has been the steadfast hallmark of our school since our 1964 founding.

How has giving changed at the School over the past 50 years? Philanthropic giving has not been a big part of the culture at Bishop McNamara. I think that more of our alumni are recognizing the importance of giving back; paying it forward, if you will. One way that private and Catholic schools are measured is their ability to fundraise and their ability to plan for the future and build endowments. In recent years there’s been much more of a strategic focus, of developing an endowment, on preparing ourselves with new capital projects and new initiatives. But there’s also been a real focus on increasing financial aid and scholarship opportunities for students.

How has giving impacted Bishop McNamara students thus far? Students are impacted directly. In the last five years we’ve increased our financial aid and scholarship funds to reach almost $2 million. That has come in large part from the generosity of donors. So to be able to provide opportunities for all students to receive the very special education that we provide, but also the additional enhancements to the building, all of those things come directly as a result of donor giving. And I think the other really big part of it is to make sure we can continue to attract and retain quality teachers. Great teachers have always been the heart and soul of Bishop McNamara and La Reine. We need to make sure that we’re also raising money to be able to support the hiring and retention of great teachers for our students now and in the future.

FACULTY, STAFF AND ADMINISTRATION President/CEO Dr. Marco J. Clark ‘85 received his Ed.D in Interdisciplinary Leadership from Creighton University. Religion Department Chair, Adam Greer, was awarded the National Society of High School Scholars Educator of Distinction Award. Justin McClain ‘00 was hired to be one of the textbook draft proofreaders for Ave Maria Press (operated by the Congregation of Holy Cross). The Ave Maria Press bi-annual school newsletter published his article: “Catholic Education and Jesus as the Definitive Teacher.” Charles Shryock IV, Director of Faculty Development for Bishop McNamara High School, received his Master of Arts in Education Organization and Leadership from Columbia University in New York City.

STUDENTS

Josephine Kalshoven ‘15, Rachel Leader ‘15 and rising senior Michael Haynes ‘16 participated in a summer camp hosted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, providing students with hands-on experience and real-world simulations of the job and tactics of the FBI. The Future Agents in Training Program teaches young people how the Bureau deals with terrorism, drug cartels, interrogations and other crimes. Josephine, Rachel and Michael were excited for the opportunity and enjoyed the experience overall. 20 BMHS dancers, along with our Dance Teacher Victoria Keithline LR ‘90, traveled to Norfolk, VA for the Regional High School Dance Festival. Our BMHS dancers represented our school and our dance department very well by participating in audition sessions, dance classes, demonstrations, performances and then college fairs to speak with recruiters. By the end of the festival, nine of our student performers came away with more than $30,000 in scholarship offers for college tuition and summer dance intensives from a variety of prestigious institutions. Krystlyn Palmer ‘15, a member of St. Margaret’s Church, received the Outstanding Female Catholic Youth Award for the Archdiocese of Washington, Office of Youth Ministry/Catholic Organization Award for her contribution to our young people and community life. She was honored along with other awardees at the Awards Mass and Ceremony at St. Elizabeth’s in Rockville. Four BMHS students received Awards and Certificates of Merit from The National Society of Arts and Letters, which supports the development of talented young Americans in the fields of art, dance, drama, literature, music and musical theater. David Cobb, Jr. ‘16 received the Award in Art. Gabriela Grant ‘16 was a Certificate of Merit recipient in Dance. Dana McCoy ‘16 and Jada Twitty ‘16 each received Certificates of Merit in Music.

Nicole Yeargin ‘16 made history as the only girl in the highlycompetitive Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Football league. Nicole is probably the only girl to have ever played football in the league. Nicole also plays on the Bishop McNamara soccer team.

Congratulations to Taylor Nolan ‘17, Jamir Moultrie ‘17, Myka Johnson Matthews ‘15, and Morgan Smith ‘16 on their Washington Post All-Met Team Selections! Taylor finished with an Honorable Mention for Track and Field, Jamir finished on the 4th Team for boys basketball, Myka finished on the 2nd Team for girls basketball, and Morgan finished on the 3rd Team for girls basketball. Jeffrey Belfield ‘16 came in second place for the Project Hope Contest, which is sponsored by the Brothers of Holy Cross. Project Hope received close to 600 submissions under the theme of: “The Year of

Consecrated Life: Wake Up the World!” Jeffrey’s film submission entitled: “Wake Up the World!” can be found on the Brothers of Holy Cross YouTube channel under “Project Hope 2015.” Jordan Mosby ‘15 and Megan Snider ‘15 both received the Kiwanis Good Citizenship Award, recognizing them for their citizenship and leadership in their communities.

AROUND CAMPUS

On December 8, 2014 Bishop McNamara High School hosted guest speaker Mya as part of our FADE colloquia series. Mya is a Grammy Award-winning American hip-hop and R&B singer, record producer, philanthropist and actress. She spoke to the BMHS community about her career and experiences in the world of the performing arts. Ms. Gemma Puglisi LR ‘74 spoke to the senior class about her extraordinary career in journalism, marketing, and public relations. She focused on how those experiences lead her to her volunteer work for Amnesty International. Ms. Puglisi is a full-time professor of Public Communications at American University. Maya Davis ‘97 returned to Bishop McNamara for a second year to speak with Ms. Keller’s African American Studies class and discuss Slave Trade practices, as well as assist students with their Genealogy projects. Tyoka Jackson ‘89, of The Big 10 Network, spoke to the Broadcast Journalism class as part of our Alumni Speaker Series. He spoke about live broadcasting and live studio etiquette, providing his experiences in the field for our students aspiring to enter the field of journalism.

Bishop McNamara High School proudly celebrated 50 years in Catholic school education. A celebratory mass was conducted with His Eminence Donald Cardinal Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington, presiding. We also celebrated our largest Homecoming gathering ever with our alumni and friends. While our last 50 years have been extraordinary; let us exceed extraordinary in our next 50 years! Mr. Shane Scott, Principal of Jerusalem School, visited Bishop McNamara along with two of his former students from Jerusalem to speak to Mr. Pozniak’s and Mr. Williams’ global studies classes. They came to speak to the classes and to reflect on the Arab/Israeli conflict. Yolanda Arrington ‘96 came to Bishop McNamara High School to speak with the Broadcast Journalism Class about internship opportunities and the field in general. Brother Jonathan Beebe, C.S.C., and Brother Mark Knightly, C.S.C., ‘72 visited our freshmen class to talk about life decisions. They also spoke with our junior class about how all vocations require sacrificial love from us and that God repays such sacrifices with many blessings.

Bishop McNamara High School was honored to host the Director of Jazz and Contemporary Programs of the Joffrey Ballet School, Mr. Michael Blake. Mr. Blake traveled from New York City to provide a Master Class and Audition session for upper-level students enrolled in classes of the dance program at BMHS. Students participating in the Master Class were also given the opportunity to audition and be selected for scholarships to the Summer Intensive at the Joffrey School. Joseph Webb ‘96, an international award-winning dancer, visited Bishop McNamara on April 21, 2015 to speak and perform for our aspiring dancers. Joseph, a professional dancer currently based in Washington, D.C., heads the House of Tap after a storied career in New York City. Ryan Middleton ‘06, who currently serves our community as a field representative for Senator Ben Cardin, visited Bishop McNamara High School to speak with our Freshmen Government classes about his career and experiences.

BMHS Fine Arts Fund

Eugenia “Toni” Millner Memorial Scholarship

The Fine Arts Programs are African Dance and Music, Band and Orchestra, Dance, Theatre, and Visual Arts. Without your support, they could not exist.

This scholarship is endowed by the family and friends of the much beloved and distinguished faculty member Mrs. Toni Millner. It is offered annually to a young man or woman who demonstrates those qualities of academic effort, co-curricular involvement and service to others.

The Bridge of Hope Fund In 2010, President/CEO Dr, Marco J. Clark ‘85 created the Bridge of Hope Fund. This fund is an emergency source of financial aid for our senior families who experience an economic crisis or financial hardship during their child’s last year.

The Brother David Andrews, C.S.C. Scholarship This scholarship pays homage to the first President of Bishop McNamara High School, Brother David Andrews, C.S.C. Through his commitment to service, dedication to Holy Cross and strict adherence to rigorous academic curriculum, Brother David put Bishop McNamara on its path to excellence.

Byrne and Osborne Family Scholarship The Byrne and Osborne Family Scholarship was established to honor the lives and memory of John and Doris Byrne and James and Lucille Osborne by their 15 children in thanksgiving for the faith and education their parents provided them.

Herndon Family Art Scholarship The Herndon Family Art Scholarship shall be presented annually to a rising senior at Bishop McNamara High School at the discretion of an Art Instructor. The young woman or man who receives this $500 scholarship must exhibit a love for and commitment to the visual arts and remain in good academic standing.

Keith L. Miller Scholarship The Keith L. Miller scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman football player who exemplifies the same mental strength, passion, skill and dedication to football as did Keith L. Miller ‘89 for whom this scholarship is named.

Michael J. Mammano Memorial Scholarship The Michael J. Mammano Memorial Scholarship shall be presented annually to a rising senior at Bishop McNamara High School who is a member of the school’s varsity football team.

CAROL WELTEROTH MARVIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Roscoe C. Perkins, Jr. Aeronautical Scholarship

This scholarship is endowed by the Marvin family and is presented annually to an 8th grade student who has been accepted into Bishop McNamara High School, and who has by their personal witness, academic integrity and faith in action enriched their church, school and community.

The Roscoe C. Perkins, Jr. Aeronautical Scholarship Award will be presented annually to a young man or woman who has exhibited academic excellence in the field of science, mathematics or engineering.

Connie Oliver Scholarship Mr. Ira Oliver endows this scholarship in memory of his wife, Connie. This scholarship is presented annually to a Bishop McNamara High School football player who has exhibited excellence in the classroom and on the competition field.

Erin Ashley Mercer Scholarship This scholarship is endowed by the Mercer Foundation in honor and memory of their daughter Erin Mercer and is awarded annually to a Bishop McNamara High School student who demonstrates the qualities of faith, scholarship, leadership and service.

Saint Andre Bessette Tuition Assistance Fund The Saint Andre Bessette Tuition Assistance Fund is utilized to assist our freshman, sophomore, and junior families who encounter unexpected financial hardship.

Sister Sharon Kozuch Memorial Scholarship This scholarship was founded in honor of Sister Sharon Kozuch and is offered to an 11th grade woman who exemplifies the qualities of faith, enthusiasm for learning and co-curricular participation, and demonstrates financial need.

Stewartship Legacy Scholarship This scholarship, endowed by the Stewart family, is awarded annually to a young woman or man at Bishop McNamara High School who exudes daily the ideals of faith, leadership and service.

Unforgettable Spirit Randell Duncan Memorial Scholarship In memory of their classmate, Randell Duncan, the BMHS Class of 2000 endows this scholarship. This scholarship is presented to a sophomore or junior student who develops a solution for youth and/or young adult violence so that we can all make the necessary steps towards peace.

Project PRIDE Scholarships The Project PRIDE Program was established as an admissions inclusion program to assist our most profoundly at risk students. The purpose of the program is to begin work with 9th grade students.

Bettie J. Sugars Perseverance Scholarship

Harmon Alumni Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a sophomore student who is committed to success despite any challenges they may encounter. The student embodies the same spirit as the scholarship namesake, Bettie J. Sugars.

This scholarship is presented to a student entering his/her senior year who demonstrates a love of learning, and has served and represented the School with character, honor and zeal.

Heather Gossart Project PRIDE Scholarship

Charles r. & doris M. Marvin, Sr. Scholarship The Charles R. & Doris M. Marvin scholarship is presented to a Project Pride student who has made great strides in their academic success.

Domenick N. & jacquelin h. Ruggiero Service Scholarship

This scholarship is offered to one or more 9th grade students who have been accepted into the Project PRIDE academic inclusion program who demonstrates verifiable financial need. The scholarship is annually renewable and progressively reassessed.

Holy Cross Brothers Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates an exemplary effort to serve both the BMHS community and larger local community as a student volunteer.

The Frederick and Matilde Durling Memorial Scholarship This scholarship shall be presented annually to two (2) students at Bishop McNamara High School who are enrolled in the St. Joseph Program.

This scholarship is awarded to a sophomore who, through their personal example of conduct, self-discipline and service, demonstrates those ideals of what a Holy Cross School seeks to be.

Integritas Scholarship This scholarship is presented to a junior who shows him- or herself to be an example of integrity, character, and strives towards completeness.

Lamberth/Muldrow Scholarship This scholarship is presented in honor of Mrs. Ressie K. Lamberth and Mrs. Mary B. Muldrow to a freshman student.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Focusâ&#x20AC;? Scholarship This scholarship is presented to a freshman student who has demonstrated and sustained positive motivation toward learning throughout their first academic year of high school.

General Steve Stevens Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is endowed in memory of Bishop McNamara friend and patron General Steve Stevens and is offered to one or more students who exemplify qualities of scholarship, leadership and community involvement.

Leona Beatrice McClain Scholarship This scholarship is presented to a student who aims to serve others in his/her community, embraces a life of faith and has a drive to further himself/herself through educational achievement.

Reginald J. Brady Scholarship Presented in honor of Mr. Reginald J. Brady, this scholarship is for those whose dedication and commitment to excellence in working with Bishop McNamara is evident in our school community.

Supporting the Vision of Blessed Fr. Moreau and the Mission of Bishop McNamara High School Bishop McNamara High School relies on the generosity of our school community. Tuition alone does not fully fund the needs of the School. It is only through the thoughtfulness of caring individuals that Bishop McNamara has been able to flourish and meet the needs of our students. Spes Unica Annual Fund Gifts of cash are available for immediate use by the School for academic programs, student resources and faculty support. Cross & Anchor Endowment The newly-established endowment allows for current and future students to have access to the best teachers and resources for their education. The establishment of perpetual scholarships, department chairs, naming of buildings and fields and general donor restricted gifts encompass the possibilities of the endowment. A Word With the Chair of the Board of Directors

Why do you give back to Bishop McNamara High School? I give to Bishop McNamara because I credit the School with instilling in me the attitude and values that have allowed me to be successful in my endeavors. I also want to help the School provide that same opportunity for others.

If you had to convince someone to give to the School, what would you say? I would say: Look at the programs the School has in place today; look at what we’ve accomplished in the last 50 years and look at our graduates and what they’re doing today. I believe the success of our graduates is a direct reflection of what McNamara did for them. They’re carrying forward the values that they gained here at McNamara.

What changes are you expecting in our next 50 years? I expect for the School to grow, and not just in the number of students. I’m talking about the breadth of opportunities we’ll provide for our students: The variety of classes, the range of extracurricular activities and programs that prepare our students for life after high school. I expect the School will continue to adapt to the changes in the world around us and make adjustments to respond to changes in how students want to learn and what they want to gain from their time at McNamara.

What do you and the Board hope to achieve in the School’s coming years? The Board and I want most of all to see that the School is making timely and appropriate adjustments to respond to the wants and needs of our students and families. We also want to see sustained commitment to the School’s strategy. I’m hopeful, and confident, that the School will come through on its commitments to new initiatives and improvements, such as the campus master plan. We’re asking a lot of our community and stakeholders, by way of funding, so we want to make sure we’re good stewards of their support.

While you attended Bishop McNamara as a student, did you ever picture yourself as Chair of the School’s Board of Directors? I actually pictured myself more in a “chair” sitting across from a “board” … of discipline! But in all seriousness, no, never! It’s very interesting for me, because for three of my four years at McNamara I was rather quiet and reserved – in school at least. It wasn’t until an experience with Mr. Goyette in my senior year that really pulled me out of my shell and allowed me to gain the confidence I have today. At the time I never thought in a million years I’d be able to ascend to a level that would put me in a position to be the Chair of the Board of ANYTHING. This has been an amazing experience and I’m so grateful for it.
