FROM THE PRESIDENT/CEO
Thank You!
“I thank my God whenever I think of you, and every time I pray for you all, I always pray with joy for your partnership in the gospel from the very first day up to the present. I am quite confident that the One who began a good work in you will go on completing it until the Day of Jesus Christ comes. It is only right that I should feel like this towards you all, because you have a place in my heart.” - Philippians 1:3-6 Dear Bishop McNamara Family and Friends, When Paul was writing these words to the holy people of Philippi, he did so with admiration, respect and deep gratitude. Paul was humbled by the faithfulness of the people in Philippi. The Church at Philippi was fond of Paul and he loved them in return. I too want to express my admiration, respect, deep gratitude and love for each of you. Just as the people of Philippi were faithful Christians and supportive of Paul’s ministry, so too are each of you faithful to the Church, to Bishop McNamara High School, and to the students and families whom we are honored to serve. Thank you, thank you, thank you! The 2016-2017 school year was a historic one. Our senior class received more than $20 million in scholarships and financial aid to some of the top colleges and universities in the nation, including three graduates who are continuing their studies and leadership at three of our nation’s military service academies. Additionally, 26 members of this class are going to college completely tuition-free, having received merit-based academic, athletic or fine arts scholarships. Most importantly, however, is that these young people “get it.” They understand that they have been called to be leaders in a society that so desperately needs them. They understand that they have been prepared to be servant-leaders, as men and women with hope to bring. They also understand that “to whom much is given, much is required.” Goodness and miracles happen every day at McNamara. With a strong basis of faith and the mission of the Holy Cross Brothers as our foundation combined with gifted and committed teachers, trusting and supportive parents, and the generosity that you provide, we know that nothing is impossible. Thank you once again for believing in our students, for believing in our school, and for believing in this worthwhile mission. A great future is ahead for our school and our students; and for that, I am deeply grateful. May God continue to bless you and your families, and may God continue to bless Bishop McNamara High School. With gratitude,
Marco J. Clark ‘85, Ed.D. 4

FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD
Confidence in Your Contribution In my day job as a financial officer for a nonprofit organization, I deal every day with the challenges of fundraising in this day and age. Individuals and companies have many options when it comes to picking organizations with good, meaningful causes to which they can donate. It’s imperative that organizations show value and prove to prospective donors that they will use their donations responsibly and effectively. Words can’t express how appreciative I am that you choose to give to Bishop McNamara. I’m certain it’s because you have confidence in the School and know that we will make the most of your contribution. Our faculty and staff work as hard, if not harder, than any others around; and when it comes to commitment, there is no match. You don’t have to look far to see your return on investment; our students and alumni are tangible proof that your generosity is being put to good use. On behalf of myself and the entire Board of Directors, thank you for your support.

“Bishop McNamara High School is already thriving. I hope to be able to continue to help develop students who are intellectually curious, creative problem solvers, agents for change, but most importantly good human beings. I want us to continue to focus on nurturing the body, mind, heart, and soul of our entire community. That’s what makes our school so special!” - Dr. Nigel A. Traylor, Principal
OUR MISSION STATEMENT:
Bishop McNamara High School, a college preparatory school in the Holy Cross tradition, exists to educate and to form young men and women in and through the Catholic faith. The school challenges its students to think with Christ: a thought animated by the gospel, manifested in service, and informed by academic excellence.

Bringing Hope
OUR GUIDING PRINCIPLES:
• Bishop McNamara is committed to developing in all students a sense of self-worth and accomplishment. • By welcoming students from diverse backgrounds, the School exposes its students to a variety of traditions beyond their own, instilling a respect for the cultures and values of others. • The school serves those within our community without prejudice, accepting all persons as they have been created in God’s infinite goodness. • Through spiritual and academic guidance and service to others, the school provides an opportunity to participate in the practice of the Catholic faith in an atmosphere supportive of religious values. • This faith message is taught not in isolation but is integrated with learning and living by relating the Gospel message to content areas, by the living example of faculty and staff, by partnership with families, and by service to the outside community. • Students learn a sense of responsibility for one’s actions and for the well-being of the local and global community through a range of evolving curricular, co-curricular and institutional programs. • The School provides a strong, challenging and diverse curriculum that allows each student to achieve success commensurate with ability and effort. • The School helps the student develop the power to reason independently and think creatively. Academic Profile
Bishop McNamara High School opened its doors in 1964 and has been providing an extraordinary Holy Cross education for our students ever since. The School graduates more than 200 students each year, and we know that they go on to become forces for good. Through our tradition of academic excellence and our commitment to faith and service, our students become countercultural contributors to society with the confidence to lead, the competence to see, and the courage to act. Our students are empowered leaders inspired by the Gospel. They are purposeful and intentional in their devotion to bringing hope and change to the world by helping those in need on the local, national and international levels. Their dedication and passion continues long after their high school years. Thanks to the rigorous curriculum we provide at Bishop McNamara, our students think creatively and critically; they embody strong morals and exhibit their own selfawareness and understanding of faith; they gain an appreciation for a broad range of disciplines and subjects; they come to embrace differences in culture – in short, our students become informed, formed and transformed throughout their Bishop McNamara education.

Academic Excellence
With our rigorous, college-preparatory curriculum, Bishop McNamara High School educates the hearts and minds of each and every student in a thriving, inclusive Catholic community. We make sure to provide engaging, hands-on, inquiry-based learning opportunities for our students beyond the classroom, including internships, online learning opportunities, guest speakers, field trips and even chances for students to travel abroad and experience other cultures first-hand. Our students are always grateful for such opportunities, which would not be possible without the generous support of donors like you.
FUN FACT:
The distinguished faculty and staff of Bishop McNamara High School average 14 years of professional experience in their respective fields, with 58% holding advanced degrees.
Q: “Why do you give to Bishop McNamara?” Joseph Hawkins ‘67 As an alumnus, I am happy and extremely proud that Bishop McNamara High School is still going strong after 50 years. I give back because I believe McNamara put me on the right path academically. It helped me realize I could be ‘smart.’ McNamara also encouraged me to believe that I could do anything to which I set my mind. Over the years, I continue to donate because it gives me an opportunity to stay current on McNamara events and developments. The building growth is a good thing. Years ago, I remember coming to an event with my father after McNamara had completed a significant campus expansion project. He seemed pleased with the progress, and that feeling meant a lot to me. I especially enjoy coming to McNamara events where I can interact with the students. I’m very pleased at how smart and focused they all are.

I know donors give for a variety of reasons. For me, it always starts with being asked to give – I never regret being asked by McNamara to do anything that ends up helping other young Mustangs. I would ask former Mustangs to reflect on how McNamara shaped their lives, and if that “shaping” and influence had a lasting impact. If yes, then think about giving back; think about how you can create that same opportunity and feeling for current students. Bishop McNamara High School Annual Report 2016-2017

Faith and Service
Bishop McNamara is proud of its Catholic identity and Holy Cross heritage. Our students are committed to living the Gospel message and Catholic social teaching. As part of that commitment, students complete hours of community service to a variety of people in need. Service trips and projects are meant to help students empathize with others and value service not just as a graduation requirement, but as a social responsibility. It is through these activities that they exercise the charity modeled by the ethics of Christ to the poor. Prayer is the fabric of the Bishop McNamara experience, with faith and service woven throughout; thus it is through these service activities that students discover their own selfawareness and understanding of personal faith as they develop their own relationship with God. Many of our students put their faith into action by becoming peer ministers and by joining one of the many Campus Ministry service programs. Peer ministers, working alongside our Campus Ministry Department, strive to carry out the vision of Blessed Basil Moreau, C.S.C. "to make God known, loved and served."

Bishop McNamara High School is one of the only schools in the metropolitan D.C. area to offer a Traditional African Music and Dance Program as part of our Fine Arts curriculum. The Sankofa production for the 2016-17 school year was entitled Harriet and the Underground, which utilized traditional African music and dance to depict the life and struggles of Harriet Tubman. The production received area acclaim from local television and news publications; it was so popular, in fact, that the students involved were given the opportunity to perform live at the Warner Theatre in July! Athletic Pride
Bishop McNamara High School maintains a proud tradition in athletics. We expect our athletes, coaches and fans to represent the student body and the Bishop McNamara community by displaying the highest standards of sportsmanship and self-discipline. The Athletics Department at Bishop McNamara educates the whole person, not just the athlete. As an extension of the classroom, athletics at Bishop McNamara instill Christian values on the playing fields, in the classroom and the community. Bishop McNamara High School provides a variety of sports and athletic programs for our students. Our student-athletes are driven by core values of faith, dignity, determination, sportsmanship and teamwork. While many student-athletes continue their athletic pursuits at the collegiate level, and some even to the professional level, the times they cherish most are the times they spent here at Bishop McNamara. The bonds they form here remain with them long after graduation, making them Mustangs for L.I.F.E - Leadership, Integrity, Faith and Excellence.

Bishop McNamara High School is broadening all that it has offered and is looking to further expand future offerings. So we’re going to see a growing campus that is helping to shape a well-rounded student. I think McNamara is embracing how society, how technology, how everything is evolving and is making sure that students from McNamara are prepared for an ever-changing world. I think being involved in athletics teaches you how to work with groups. Athletics teaches you how to overcome problems, how to work with other individuals and how to come together and form solutions with others. From my own experience, I feel athletics helps to shape individuals and prepare them for life outside of athletics. No matter the work environment that you come into, you will have to learn to deal with others and be able to problem solve on some level. Obviously athletics played an important role during my time here. You always want the athletics teams to be in a position to win; it doesn’t necessarily have to be championships all the time, but you want them to be well-prepared so that they are positioned to go out and do the best they can. Athletes need proper facilities and resources so that they remain competitive, and remaining competitive also means that they remain relevant, which also helps McNamara itself remain relevant.

I think there are two kinds of individuals who may be on the fence about donating; it might be those who are alumni, and I would encourage them to tap into their days at McNamara and think about how being a donor could help the younger version of themselves. Those donors might be able to give this younger generation some things that they may not have had during their days as a student. When they’re in a position to help somebody else, it becomes a kind of payback/pay it forward, so to speak. Then, for those individuals not yet affiliated with the School, I would tell them to look at what this school can offer young individuals. Just look at all the good this school does and know that you had a part in shaping their futures! I think for me, McNamara just gave me a great foundation. I think it has helped shape who I am today, and because of that, giving back to the School has always been easy for me.
The St. Joseph Program at Bishop McNamara High School
Mission: The St. Joseph Program is designed to provide a positive, Catholic, college preparatory, educational and social experience for a select group of students with diagnosed learning differences. About the Program: Many students with learning differences who enroll at Catholic schools find themselves facing challenges such as the rigorous curriculum demands, a lack of organization and time management skills, and/or the lack of resources for faculty and staff to address their needs. Some are torn by the choice between a Catholic school education that they want, and a public school education that will accommodate their academic needs. But Bishop McNamara High School provides a program that gives students with learning differences the support that they need in a Catholic school setting. With three faculty members devoted to the St. Joseph Program, students enrolled in the program are given the resources they need to thrive amongst their peers academically, socially and athletically. The integrity and difficulty of our college-preparatory curriculum is not compromised for our St. Joseph Program students; they receive the same assignments and projects as their peers, and take the same tests and exams. Through consultation of students’ Individual Accommodations Plans (IAP), the St. Joseph Program staff work with parents and faculty members to best serve the students’ needs. Students of the St. Joseph Program face the same academic challenges and rigors as their peers, and are welcomed and accepted without hesitation.
“We shall always place education side by side with instruction; the mind will not be cultivated at the expense of the heart.
While we prepare useful citizens for society, we shall likewise do our utmost to prepare citizens for heaven.” ~ Blessed Basil Moreau

The Project PRIDE Program The Project PRIDE Program was founded in 1999 as an admissions inclusion program and has served more than 350 students since its inception. Project PRIDE students have maintained a 100% graduation rate and upwards of 95 percent have matriculated to colleges and universities throughout the United States, including top-tier schools such as Yale University, Georgetown University and the University of Notre Dame. Today, the program supports 2025 determined, hard-working and serious students per grade who present one or more significant risk factors for school failure and are fully committed to their education and personal growth. Robert Putnam, author of the book Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis (2015) found that the most promising approach to reducing the opportunity gap for students is to provide children with the opportunity to attend the best schools, with adequate resources, and taught by high-quality faculty. Recognizing that a high-quality education positively impacts educational attainment and social mobility, the Project PRIDE Program helps students break down barriers to achievement and navigate successfully through our rigorous, college-preparatory program by providing personal and academic support, mentorship, college and career readiness, financial assistance and parental support. Project PRIDE students also benefit from participation in cultural events by visiting museums and theaters in the Washington Metropolitan area, focused college counseling and campus visits, and professional development. Beginning in the summer prior to freshman year and continuing on throughout their high school years, Project PRIDE students are provided with personal counseling, mentoring by alumni and current students, and mental health and wellness support. The goal of the Project PRIDE Program is to instill in each student the confidence, drive, courage and determination to overcome any obstacle that would deter him or her from reaching their God-given potential. It is during these important developmental years that the foundations of self-esteem, self-efficacy, goal-setting and success are permeated; enabling our students to thrive in college and beyond. 16

Richard Middleton Project PRIDE Scholarship Mr. Rick Middleton, a faculty member here at Bishop McNamara from 1986 until 2013, passed away on September 22, 2017. Rick was a beloved friend and mentor in the Bishop McNamara High School community for more than 25 years. He held numerous positions including Faculty Member, Director of Personnel, Director of Student Activities, Director of Discipline, Senior Class Moderator, Social Studies Chair, Guidance Counselor and Administrator. In 1994, Rick received the Faculty Caritas Award, and in 2013, he received the Holy Cross Caritas Award. Dr. Marco Clark, President/CEO remarked during the ceremony: “Rick is an inspiration and role model not to just students but to everyone he came in contact with. Rick always brought a loving, calm, poised presence to our school community.” Rick had a great love and affection for the Brothers of Holy Cross and established a scholarship in their honor which is being renamed the Richard Middleton Project PRIDE Scholarship. The family has requested that support continues towards the Richard Middleton Project PRIDE Scholarship, which is awarded to a sophomore who, through personal example of conduct, self-discipline and service, demonstrates those ideals of what a Holy Cross school seeks to be. “ As parents of an alumnus and as donors, it has been an absolute pleasure to support a concerned, caring, involved academic administrator.
Today as a role model of life-long learning Dr. Clark has been an advocate for BMHS, and remains an excellent, caring leader. ~ Mrs. Robin O'Neil
at Bishop McNamara High School
We give because BMHS has been and still is a blessing to us! McNamara also provided a terrific academic curriculum, as well as a family environment that allowed our son to thrive. The spiritual aspect nurtured Kevin during those challenging high school years. McNamara is a valuable alternative to the public school system for parents seeking a Christian environment. Kevin’s tenure at McNamara established life-long friendships and helped develop him into the young man he became as he made career choices. As an only child, Kevin really connected with the family environment at McNamara; he embraced many and called them his brothers, especially on the football and soccer teams. Once we lost Kevin, we wanted to find a way to honor his life and legacy; it was paramount to include McNamara, a true contributor to his life-long learning. It was a natural thought to incorporate the KEO Memorial Scholarship into the mother-son brunch; it was an activity that Kevin loved, and from its inception the goal was to celebrate young men at McNamara. Our focus on young men is because there are so many doing great things, and yet they do not receive the deserved recognition. If we can provide assistance to help them gain a superior Christian education, then we feel we are making a deposit into our next generation. In the world we live in today, McNamara is creating global citizens. Donations are not just financial, one must give of their time and talents in any capacity. We impact the lives of our next generation where we can in order to make a difference and ensure huge dividends are manifested. The amount of money or time doesn’t matter when giving with the right heart; it provides an experience to the individual that is not always tangible. But it can be an equal blessing to the student and the donor; we are preparing the next generation to be responsible, and to be leaders at their school as well as in their community. It’s important that we remember we are our brother’s keeper and touching the lives of our youth fulfills the scriptures in Luke 12:48; for unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required. It’s important to ensure that Christian-based education alternatives continue to exist, thrive and advance to meet the ever-growing needs of the next generations. We are forever grateful for our BMHS family, and the excellent leadership of Dr. Marco Clark. Our scholarship is endowed and will go on longer than we will, for this we are forever grateful, and that makes us proud to leave this legacy of Kevin Eugene O’Neil, graduating class of 2003.

Science and Technology Having been born into a digital age, today's Bishop McNamara students crave technology. In our modern classrooms at Bishop McNamara, technology is integrated throughout our curriculum. The needs of our tech-thirsty students are met through our diverse science and technology academic programs and supported through a variety of similar co-curricular activities. We have added several new courses, including video game design, web design, foundations of engineering, and our special hands-on information technology class: "Making Lab: Create, Hack, Play." But we strive to do so much more for them. Modern students yearn to learn more about the fields of technology, engineering and science long before they get to college. We want to provide our students with the most advanced technology and resources to allow them to pursue these interests now - striking while the iron is hot. Our new CITE Lab gives students hands-on experience using technology such as Raspberry Pi computers and our 3D printer, which helps bolster their confidence in the subject matter and allows them to prove to themselves that they too can be the future engineer who sends a more advanced exploration device into space, or the future doctor who cures cancer. With the next phase of our Faith. Family. Future! Capital Campaign, the School will construct a new Science and Innovation Center to further promote STEM education at Bishop McNamara. The center will create a larger space for students to work and collaborate. The world needs educated, ambitious, ethical leaders in our engineering, medical, technological and scientific career fields. We can foster these interests in our students and form the young men and women the world needs - Now.

FAITH. FAMILY. Dear Friends, It really is amazing that we have come so far so fast - and we are deeply grateful for all the support that has brought us to this exciting point in our Campaign. We are pleased to report that the first half of our Campaign's first phase is complete! The Dedication and Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony of the Andy Mona '82 Student Center at Bishop McNamara was held on September 14, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The successful completion of this bustling center of student life adds momentum at this important juncture in the Campaign. Through the next phase of the Campaign, we will focus on three specific initiatives: • Developing tomorrow’s innovators by building on highly-successful programs and providing training and exploration of cutting-edge technologies. • Providing scholarships for low-income, high-caliber students who will thrive at Bishop McNamara, if given the opportunity to attend. • Creating new and updated spaces for the student community to gather, collaborate, study and discover; including classroom modernization and renovations to our athletic locker rooms and weight facility. These goals will be accomplished through these critically important objectives: La Reine Science & Innovation Center: $10 Million Endowed Scholarships: $2.5 Million Campus Improvements, Building Modernization and The Holy Cross Courtyard: $2.5 Million We write to you today to ask that you prayerfully consider a gift on behalf of the Bishop McNamara and La Reine families. Just as our parents and grandparents gave us a hopeful future when we were young, let us do no less for those who follow us as students. Please join us in supporting this landmark effort to create an even better future for students today and for generations to come. Together, we can do what no one of us can do alone.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. With your help, the legacy lives on!

The La Reine Science and Innovation Center at
Bishop McNamara High School
Inspiring Hearts and Minds to Innovate, Thrive and Transform! Innovation lies at the crossroads of fields, disciplines and cultures. At Bishop McNamara, we are developing tomorrow’s innovators today by committing to provide cutting-edge spaces and facilities that foster collaborative learning and a hands-on approach to the study of science and technology. The centerpiece of our vision for the future is the establishment of the La Reine Science and Innovation Center at Bishop McNamara High School. This planned state-of-the-art facility will enable us to expand beyond traditional science offerings, build on highlysuccessful programs already in existence, and create new spaces for exploration, creativity and discovery. Serving the Needs of the Greater Community and Future Workforce Needs This Center will enable us to serve as an important resource and pipeline for underrepresented populations in STEM fields; including women, minorities and students at or below the poverty line through a new program of scholarship and financial aid support. As a co-anchor of the region with Joint Base Andrews, Bishop McNamara High School is committed to also providing scholarship support for students of military service families to take advantage of this extraordinary learning environment. Our Goals At present, all Bishop McNamara science classes and science/computer labs are operating at maximum capacity. To meet the aspirations of tech-thirsty students, the goal of both deepening and broadening curricular offerings and making them more available to underserved and underrepresented students, and the urgent need to provide equipment and resources required for this effort, the La Reine Science and Innovation Center will double the number of science and computer labs. The technologies learned in this newly-expanded curriculum will be applied to a multitude of potential career paths related to science, technology and engineering. Our vision is that engineering especially will be one of the chief cornerstones of the experiential approach to learning and the hallmark of science and innovation at Bishop McNamara. The Center will enable the Foundation of Engineering curriculum, for example, to cover all four years of high school. This will help us further prepare our students for the future, as we set our vision to meet the demands of today's society and the desires of our school community. Our dream and their aspirations are only limited by time and space. With the advent of the Center, our highly-successful Cisco certification program, as well as other popular computer science and information technology courses, will be expanded to feature new courses in evolving technologies such as coding and cybersecurity. These courses will be provided in an adaptive, cutting-edge learning environment. Another focus of the Center will be to transform aviation from a club activity to an innovative science curriculum that offers not only ground and flight training, but also aeronautics. 24
Bishop McNamara High School Annual Report 2016-2017
Currently, students must pay for this training themselves and add time to their already crowded school day due to lack of space and resources. The U.S. military and U.S. airlines are currently short of pilots and this trend, especially for the airlines, is expected to last for the next five to 10 years. The New Standard: Innovation Finally, and perhaps most importantly, our new Center will enable students and faculty to experiment and create in open work areas and “makerspaces. Flexible classrooms will promote teamwork and active learning. Welcoming common areas will extend the collaborative environment to the broader community of learners. The result will be a facility that offers unprecedented opportunities for students to explore, create, imagine and discover. The Challenge We are now in the process of meeting with faculty, educational leaders and industry executives to develop and design the new Center, where innovators will be fostered, challenged and inspired. Our plan is to conduct an academic program study, develop and design the new Center, apply for permits and complete construction by September 2020 of this 20,000 sq. ft. facility. The approximate cost of this project is estimated at $10 million. The Call We look forward to building a coalition of funders from business, industry, government and private philanthropists to make this vision come to life for the future students of Bishop McNamara; students who will become the innovators of tomorrow. We welcome your involvement!
Transforming Lives for Generations to Come Meeting the Needs of High-Performing, Low-Income Students Catholic School Education - Reducing the Opportunity Gap The most promising approach to reducing poverty in our country is to provide low-income children with the opportunity to attend the best schools, with adequate resources, taught by high-quality faculty. Catholic schools like Bishop McNamara have been found to produce higher levels of achievement than public schools, especially for kids from poor backgrounds. Bishop McNamara - A Model of Excellence in Education Bishop McNamara High School in Forestville, Maryland offers a dynamic college-preparatory program steeped in the tradition of liberal arts and infused with science, performing arts, competitive athletics, multiple co-curricular programs and an active service program. The class of 2021 matriculated from 91 different middle schools; the students speak more than 24 languages and come to us from six counties in Maryland, D.C., and Virginia. More than 58 percent of our teachers hold a Master’s Degree or above. Several of these faculty members have been recognized on a local and national level for their teaching acumen, research, published works and professional excellence. BMHS graduates over the past two decades have become doctors, lawyers, engineers, business owners, accountants, teachers, public servants, authors, actors, artists and much more. The large majority of these graduates return to Prince George’s County in their adult life, are active in their communities, and are raising their families here in the Nation’s Capitol area.
Unfortunately, prospective students and their families requested a total of $3.8 million - and many were forced to withdraw their applications due to lack of sufficient funds to enroll. Bishop McNamara believes that the time has come to recruit and sustain the underserved, low-income students of the region and of southeastern Prince George’s County. The 50th Anniversary Campaign for Bishop McNamara High School A major priority of the Bishop McNamara Faith. Family. Future! Campaign is to provide scholarship support to exceptional students at or below the poverty line, with a particular focus on students from Forestville and Prince George’s County who embody the spirit and character of the Bishop McNamara community. Addressing the gap in financial aid entirely through endowment would require a fund of $45 million. Our current goal over the next two years is to raise at least $2.5 million in cash and pledges, and an additional $10 million in planned gifts. Proceeds from a $2.5 million endowment will provide $100,000 in scholarship funds each year, every year, in perpetuity. Funds will be added to our existing endowment of $3 million, increasing financial aid awards by 10 percent annually. This very well could be the key that unlocks the doors to college, a successful career and the road out of poverty for many of these students. Scholarship Opportunities
Bishop McNamara outcomes are truly extraordinary. For example: 99-100 percent of BMHS students matriculate to top colleges and universities in the nation each year; the graduating class of 2017 received more than $21 million in scholarships and grants to attend the college of their choice. BMHS students are now attending the United States Air Force Academy, the United States Naval Academy, the University of Notre Dame, Georgetown University, Columbia University, the University of Pennsylvania and many other prestigious institutions.
Named endowed scholarship funds to support a full-tuition award can be established at Bishop McNamara for a minimum gift of $375,000 (pledged over a period of years). Partial awards can be established at lesser gift levels.
One in 10 graduates of the class of 2017 received a full, merit-based academic, arts, or athletic scholarship.
We invite all those who wish to join us in our effort to educate and inspire the less fortunate among us, and we look forward to your generosity and support.
The Challenge
Bishop McNamara High School is uniquely positioned to meet this urgent community need and to serve as a model for both Catholic and private schools across the country, as well as those, notably, under the banner of the Congregation of Holy Cross.
Currently the School’s financial aid program meets only 40 percent of a student’s demonstrated need. On average, students received $3,877 in financial aid. For the current fiscal year, Bishop McNamara provided $2.1 million in financial aid to 563 students; 65 percent of the student body. Bishop McNamara High School Annual Report 2016-2017

Campus Improvements, Building Modernization and The Holy Cross Courtyard While steeped in tradition, Bishop McNamara High School is always looking to the future. In order to meet that need, today’s learners must be provided the opportunity to innovate, adapt, collaborate, discover, and create.
To offer students a true 21st century rigorous and relevant education, we must meet the challenges of sustainability, offer classrooms equipped with state-of-the-art technology, provide formal and informal learning spaces where students can collaborate in small groups, participate in peer-to-peer learning, or engage in individual discovery, and provide sacred and reflective spaces that encourage prayer, restful excellence, and productive solitude. Our goal is to also create a campus that feels like home. Because for many of our students, it is. Our 40 classrooms will be equipped with the latest in adaptive classroom configurations to support the School’s educational philosophy of teaching and learning as a holistic experience, educating not only the mind, but the heart, body, and spirit as well. Optimum learning environments include collaborative learning spaces, innovative furniture, technology integration, creativity, and hands-on problem solving. 26
Bishop McNamara High School Annual Report 2016-2017
The Campaign will also seek major investments to air condition our gymnasium, perhaps the most used space on campus. Donors to the campaign will also help us modernize our aging locker rooms, athletic offices, and weight room to benefit coaches and student-athletes today and better recruit those for years to come.
A new multi-purpose, outdoor Courtyard will pay tribute to the Brothers of Holy Cross, whose educational mission and charism inspires us daily. This education in the faith requires the development of the mind, the cultivation of the heart, enkindling of a zeal for service, the encouragement of hope in the cross, and uniting with others as family. Situated between the Main Building and the new Science and Innovation Center, the Courtyard will feature a fountain and reflecting pool, ceremonial archway, contemplative garden, an outdoor learning commons and an amphitheater for outdoor classes, performances and presentations. For information on naming these spaces, please contact the campaign office.

Celebrating Life, Celebrating Legacy
Phase 1A of the Faith. Family. Future! Capital Campaign: Complete! On September 14th, Bishop McNamara High School had an early start as students, faculty and staff filled the new Andy Mona '82 Student Center. Molette Green from NBC4 Washington came to campus in the early morning to do a live story on the Dedication Ceremony that we held later in the morning. His Eminence Donald Cardinal Wuerl arrived on campus shortly before our 8:30 a.m. Dedication Mass. After mass, His Eminence performed a special blessing over the Stations of the Cross donated by local and alumni artists, and assisted President/CEO Dr. Marco Clark '85 in performing the ribbon cutting to officially kickoff the Dedication Ceremony. Cardinal Wuerl blessed the Student Center, and gave a speech full of kind words and encouragement for the coming school year and the future of Bishop McNamara. Other guest speakers for the event included BMHS Principal Dr. Nigel Traylor, Mr. Vincent "Cap" Mona the father of Andy Mona '82 for whom the Center is named, Andy Mona II son of Andy Mona '82, Senate President the Honorable Thomas V. Mike Miller, Jr., and previous BMHS President Heather Gossart. Bishop McNamara High School would like to thank everyone in attendance of this wonderful event, and to everyone who donated their time, talent and treasure to help bring the first phase of our Faith. Family. Future! Capital Campaign to a successful finish. This would not have been possible without you!

We are very proud that the Cappello family can be a part of the Faith. Family. Future! Capital Campaign. Each one of us – whether we were McNamara or La Reine graduates – has benefited from our science classes we took at our alma maters.
A Family Legacy
I have such fond memories of high school; several activities exposed me to diverse ideas. La Reine High School provided many opportunities to build on the skills learned in the classroom. My La Reine education allowed me to develop my skills and leadership style. I have worked for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) since 1983, and currently serve as the Chief Financial Officer for NASA Langley Research Center, one of the nine NASA installations. Throughout my entire career, the leadership experience I acquired at La Reine was integral for building my confidence. That’s how I think the La Reine education was especially important for women; providing leadership skills and the diverse, confidence-building activities that have helped us become successful in specialized fields involving science and math, while holding technical, managerial and leadership roles. When you think back to your high school years and the fond memories that bring a smile to your face, please think about giving. Because that means there’s been a positive effect on you – both when it happened, and today as you think about it. When my brother Joe first told us about the Campaign and the plan to build the La Reine Science and Innovation Center, we did not hesitate to provide financial support because La Reine is, and always has been, strong in our hearts. Our entire Catholic education experience was important and we were very grateful to our parents for making this available to us. Private education is costly, and my parents made a lot of sacrifices for their seven children to attend Catholic high schools. Their sacrifices motivated me to do my best and have helped me in raising my children. Our two daughters, who are currently in 10th and 8th grade, have thrived in a private school environment, especially in their science classes. This educational environment has allowed their teachers to spend more time with each of them and give all children the opportunity to interact and grow. I feel very strongly that whatever I can contribute will help other students enjoy and be enriched from their classes as our children have.

“Think of someone who inspired you or supported you in your academic endeavors and donate in honor of them. Donating in our parents’ names was so rewarding.
With the combination of my mother’s brains and my father’s work ethic, my academic career was all I could have hoped for. And I owe it to them and the environment in which I learned.” Teresa Cappello

My husband and I have tried to instill in our girls the concept of volunteering and giving back to others that need help. That mindset was part of our upbringing, thanks to our parents and, of course, our schooling. Our Catholic education helped instill in us the desire to help others, which means donating time as well as money. Sometimes it’s about giving back because there’s something you personally can do to help people in an unfortunate environment or circumstance. Many thanks to McNamara for combining with La Reine and continuing to inspire our next generation of Catholic leaders.

“My mother’s education was so important to her and she was very grateful for the time that she had at La Reine, so she wanted to make sure that education was still being offered to future students at McNamara. It’s similarly an environment where she felt valued and belonged, and wanted to make sure future students would have that opportunity.” ~ Anna Baniak, daughter of Marian Cappello LR '72

Bishop McNamara High School Class of 1974
Education for our family was always very important – Catholic education was always very important as far as our parents were concerned. Donating to Bishop McNamara High School always seems like the best place for me because you know that your money’s going to a good cause. The Spes Unica Annual Fund targets scholarships for those who need money most. Giving those students an opportunity that they otherwise might not be able to attain is a great feeling, and supporting them, I think, is one of the best ways to support McNamara. I had five sisters that went to La Reine High School, so the fact that the Faith. Family. Future! Capital Campaign includes an initiative to honor the sister school that stood beside McNamara for so many years is incredible. A lot of La Reine alumnae have less of a connection to McNamara even after the two schools merged, so I think this is a good way to get them involved, and I thought it was a good way to get my own sisters involved. Over the years I was probably giving contributions to Bishop McNamara long before my sisters – because it was my school, it made sense. Then when the Capital Campaign kicked off and the La Reine Science and Innovation Center was included in that plan, I thought it was something worthwhile, and that a family contribution would be a good way to show our support. All five of my sisters agreed with the idea immediately. We have three doctors in the family, so to a certain extent, the La Reine Science and Innovation Center resonated with our family. The benefits of keeping McNamara viable and thriving in its current location is well worth it for all of us. Not just Maryland, but for that community in Prince George’s County. The way I look at it is that people have options for education – McNamara, for my point, still remains a viable option for private school that truly puts an emphasis on education and servant leadership.
Patricia Cappello
La Reine High School Class of 1976
La Reine High School provided a structured environment throughout my four years of attendance. The La Reine educational setting allowed me to heighten my existing study skills, enhance my analytical abilities, as well as prepare and present well-organized and complete documents and presentations. The years I attended La Reine instilled in me a strong inquisitive route of approaching any tasks or assignments, and that path is how I approach my life, responsibilities and employment. I attribute my graduation from college and passing of the Certified Public Accountant exam to the studying methods that I learned during my four years at La Reine. After 39 years of working as a CPA for the Federal Government, I retired in February 2017 and am looking forward to my future adventures. My four sisters and I attended La Reine and my one brother attended Bishop McNamara. When I heard that La Reine was closing I was thankful that Bishop McNamara would be taking up the charter to further the La Reine education for young women. My family remains dedicated to both of the schools that molded each of us into well-educated, well-balanced and successful individuals. The La Reine Science and Innovation Center furthers my dedication to Bishop McNamara – it provides a formal structure which is a tribute to the La Reine learning establishment. My parents were strong proponents for educating their daughters in science and mathematics, and would be so pleased knowing that a learning center aimed at encouraging the study of these subjects will be built and carry on the La Reine traditions. For any alumni of Bishop McNamara and alumnae of La Reine considering a donation to Bishop McNamara High School, I invite them to think back to their freshman through senior years at their respective high schools. Reflect on the high school journey as they walked through the halls, the friends they met that still remain as friends now, and the exposure to so many new and forward-thinking lessons. Ponder the guidance and teaching provided to us from all of the teachers we encountered. Then think about how we handle day-to-day issues, or unique problems or adventures and realize just how often we address those issues through practices we learned in our four years of high school. Let us provide that experience, that opportunity for someone else. Bishop McNamara High School Annual Report 2016-2017

The Bishop McNamara and La Reine High School
ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
with Darius Baxter ‘11
“In any given day there are a million things that we spend $10 on. Why not invest in the community that has done so much for you or your children?”
Following graduation from Bishop McNamara, I began serving as the Treasurer of the Alumni Association. In addition to my role as the Treasurer, I was honored to be a recipient of the Bishop McNamara Caritas Award for my service in low-income communities throughout the metro D.C. area. I have worked closely with my former teachers and administrators to coordinate impact opportunities for current/former students of Bishop McNamara to ensure that the legacy of Blessed Basil Anthony Moreau lives on for generations to come. Alumni can stay connected to Bishop McNamara in several ways. The first of many is staying connected with your former classmates. Six years later, I’m lucky to have kept a circle of friends that I graduated with that have reminded me of my journey through the halls of Bishop McNamara High School. Another way is by being involved with the BMHS/LRHS Alumni Association. I think it is important for alumni from both schools to be involved with the Alumni Association because the more people that are involved in the process the better our community becomes. Whether you are young, old, black, white, tall, short, rich, or poor - when you involve yourself in the process, your voice becomes heard. Inevitably that means you are shaping the future for what Bishop McNamara will become. Although sharing your monetary resources is greatly appreciated, there are many ways to support the Bishop McNamara community. Our community has benefited greatly from those who have volunteered their time at events, coached athletes on the sports field, or mentored students to college success. With such a diverse set of talents within our BMHS network, the possibilities are endless in ways to support our community 44
Bishop McNamara High School Annual Report 2016-2017
I grew up going to Catholic school in California, so I am a big believer in Catholic education. It has a foundational element that is important to me. When I was looking at schools in this area for my children, I knew I needed to find a Christ-centered school with a caring, passionate administration that was genuinely interested in students and their academics. I was deeply impressed with Dr. Clark; he personally greeted me and my children at every encounter in a school of approximately 800 students with 1600 parents/guardians. That just sat well with my spirit, that this was the right place for my children to be with such a personable administration that was interested in their success. Bishop McNamara High School embraces the parents as much as they embrace the kids. That really attracted me, and it felt good that they know who you are when they talk to you, they’re approachable – you just get a good feeling being here! This is my third year serving as President of the Bishop McNamara High School Parents’ Club. I see the Parents’ Club as an extension between parents, the School and the students. We provide assistance and support to parents when it comes to helping our children be successful in any aspect of their lives. When your children go to high school, it’s entirely different from when they go to middle and elementary school; you’re more involved and engage in more hands-on activities when your children are younger. But as they get older and the move on to high school, you’re teaching them to be more independent and accountable, but at the same time, you still want to be involved. They’re growing up, but they still need us! That’s where the Parents’ Club comes in. We help parents and their children when it comes to handling stress, looking for colleges, time management and all the other things that come with high school life. We strive to be supportive and focused on the parents and what we can bring to them as far as what’s going on in the life of their student. I am a strong proponent and supporter of this School. When they say “welcome home,” I feel that in my heart. I do my part to support the kids, I love to see them grow and how the School rises to meet them where they are. It means everything to me. I may not be the biggest donor to Bishop McNamara, but I believe in what they’re trying to do. I believe in the vision they’re setting forth in transforming the School into a better learning environment for the kids. I want to do what I can to help fulfill that mission. If you’re considering making a donation to Bishop McNamara High School, get off the fence and donate! You’re investing in the future, and you’re helping set the path for our young people. We don’t know all of the possibilities that the future holds, but if we can prepare our young people now and give them the tools to help them succeed, we will see and celebrate the rewards they achieve in the future. WAYS to SUPPORT Supporting the Vision of Blessed Fr. Moreau and the Mission of Bishop McNamara High School
Bishop McNamara High School relies on the generosity of our school community. Tuition alone does not fully fund the needs of the School. It is only through the thoughtfulness of caring individuals that Bishop McNamara has been able to flourish and meet the needs of our students.
