Message from the President Dear Friends of Miege,

I think all of us were anxious to ring in the new year and put 2020 behind us. Although as I reflect on the past year, I am incredibly proud of the many accomplishments of our students, faculty, and staff and I am very grateful for the many blessings we received as a school community as we worked through many challenges.

The COVID 19 virus turned our world upside down in March of 2020. Since that time, our faculty and staff put forth extraordinary efforts to adapt learning environments to safely educate students 100% virtually last spring, and both online and in-person for the 20/21 school year. Sporting events, band, choir, and other elective activities have been modified to permit safe participation, albeit most times without fans or an audience to observe but with the same Stag Pride. The dedication, resourcefulness, flexibility and generosity of our Miege community has been nothing short of spectacular to witness first-hand.

A humbling part of living through difficult times is to be able to see God’s amazing grace through the actions of others. We, as Miegians have proven to be resilient and will come through the pandemic stronger and better equipped to face new challenges. In the pages of this Annual Report, we have shared some of the many wonderful accomplishments that were made possible by a strong community working together to support Miege.

On behalf of the faculty, staff and students I thank you for your support of Bishop Miege High School and ask for your prayers and support for the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead of us. Gratefully,

Randy Salisbury President

The Bishop Miege Board of Trustees are members of the community, approved by the Archbishop, to manage the activities of the school. In 2010, each high school in Johnson County became their own not-for-profit corporation, with the Board of Trustees responsible for ensuring the mission of the school is consistent with the Catholic Church and the school’s finances and assets are managed appropriately. In addition, the Board of Trustees is responsible for hiring a President. Each Trustee serves a three-year term with a maximum of two consecutive terms.

From the Foundation President Dear Miege Friends,

These past nine months have presented many challenges for all of us. A major part of those worries has focused on our concerns for the health and welfare of others. This feeling has extended much further than our own family and loved ones. This strong desire, perhaps a silver lining of the pandemic, to protect those around us has served to enhance our realization of how much we genuinely care for and need each other. One aspect of this dynamic has been our awareness of how many people in our community have had their livelihoods put at risk because of ongoing stay home and quarantine protocols. In response to this realization, many have made it a priority to support their favorite local merchants in order to help keep them in business. Like countless others, my wife and I have made it a priority to get carryout from our favorite eateries in order to help these family businesses remain solvent. I read something last April when the future impact of COVID was totally uncertain that stuck with me in that regard. The author forecasted that as a result of the safety restrictions put on the general population many small businesses-- including private schools-- may not be able to financially survive the economic hardships ahead.

The author further challenged his readers to think about the small businesses and schools that are most important to them and that they want to survive when the dust clears. His advice was to SUPPORT them financially in order to help ensure their future.

To that point our Catholic schools fall into that category of being at risk. As many of our parents face job loss, layoffs and furloughs, their ability to afford tuition and keep their children in our schools become a major obstacle. Since enrollment and tuition are the lifeblood of our schools, it has been predicted that many Catholic schools nationwide may not continue to thrive or have to close altogether when the impact of the pandemic finally ends. In this Annual Report, you will find evidence of how the already generous support of friends like you reached a whole new level. In particular the success last spring of the Miege Strong drive and our virtual Auction Fund a Need demonstrated clearly the desire and willingness of our school community to financially support Bishop Miege in order to sustain us through these most uncertain times.

So on behalf of all of us at Bishop Miege, I want to thank you for continuing to keep us going in these challenging times and ensuring that when all the dust settles Bishop Miege will be stronger than ever.

I want to close with this reflection from a good friend: As we look forward to a return to normal, we are comforted that there is always a positive side to every situation… in all things God works for good with those who love Him… (Rom 8:28) Blessings to you and your family. Gratefully,

Joe Passantino Foundation President

The Bishop Miege Foundation was created in 1992 as a financial advisory group. Today, its purpose has grown to benefit Bishop Miege by assisting the school with fundraising and volunteer activities, advocacy in the community, as well as expert legal and financial counsel.

Learning Continues Uninterrupted During Pandemic Miege faculty turns on a dime in Spring After COVID-19 hit, just like the rest of our nation, our school community had to adapt. The stay home order required our faculty and staff to create a remote learning environment at a moment’s notice-- which they successfully did finishing up the Spring semester of 2020. Miege realized the following accomplishments: • • • •

Maintained high academic standards Attendance was high with 99% of students online Continued to build the Faith community with weekly virtual Mass and daily reflections Student leadership continued with virtual Faith Family time built into schedule

Students successfully return to in-person learning We opened the 2020-2021 school year with many COVID protocols in place. To accommodate for adaptive learning during this time, Miege has provided: • Additional technology and staffing • Smaller class sizes • Safety and sanitizing protocols

• Option for remote learning • Extra curricular activities with limited or no live fan support

“In my engineering classes we design solutions to problems I’ve never even thought of before. I found I have an aptitude for the work, and I appreciate the challenge. As a result of my classes I now plan to study engineering in college.” -Aiden, Class of 2021 (top photo, pg 11)

LIFE OF A STAG

National Merit Semifinalists Bishop Miege had a banner year with four students named as National Merit Semifinalists. Seniors Charlie Hill, Hayden Clements, Erin Garr and Aidan Oblepias were presented the honors in September. The award is based on the highest scoring entrants in each state and represents the top .5 percent of Kansas seniors.

EMBRACEing Miege The Learning Resource Department has implemented a Peer Mentor program for juniors and seniors to work alongside their peers providing spiritual, academic, and social support. The mentors are assigned to classrooms each semester with the role of supporting all students in class, small groups, and working with individuals. The program enables them to gain life experiences in leadership, patience, guidance, and acceptance. The group of 13 had to apply for the program with administrative approval. The program has been a welcoming extension of the Learning Resource department in their support of our faculty and students.

COMMENDED STUDENTS Zephan Rodriguez and Parker Summers were named National Merit Commended Scholars, representing the top 3-4% on their PSAT scores. Zephan was also recognized by the College Board National Recognition Program, as a 2020-21 Hispanic Scholar for his Excellence in Academic Achievement.

History Made Bishop Miege crowned our first Homecoming King, Carson Key (photo), during half-time of the homecoming football game for the 2020-2021 season. Students and parents initiated the idea of allowing male students to be voted into the traditional court. Daniel Fontaine, Henry Coones, Evan Parra and Jack Kincaid were the remaining candidates. (photo: L-R Isabella Guadamuz, Merrin O’ Connor, Payton Verhulst (Queen) Ella Martin and Caroline Gyllenborg) A First for Bishop Miege Wrestling Miege history was made as the first Miege girls, Sophomores Jasmine Tolsen and Nohemi (Mimi) Gurrola, wrestled in the KSHSAA sanctioned girls competition this season. From Miege Wrestling Coach Ryan Wrigley, “They wrestled tough, and have a lot of room to grow! They are competing against girls that have a couple of years experience in the sport. It is a proud time for the wrestling team.”

Payton Verhulst named Gatorade Kansas Girls Basketball Player of the Year The 6-foot guard led the Stags to an 18-2 record and the Class 4A state tournament at the time of her selection averaging 17.8 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.5 blocks in the regular season. Payton maintains a 3.70 GPA in the classrooom, is also a Volleyball standout player. She was Captain of the USA Basketball U16 Women’s National Team, and earned MVP honors at the FIBA Americas U16 Championship. Verhulst is a two-time First Team All-State honoree and is ranked as the nation’s No. 8 recruit in the Class of 2021 by ESPN.

PERFECT SCORES! Charlie Hill earned a perfect score of 36 on the ACT exam last year as a Junior and Aidan Oblepias achieved his perfect score fall semester 2020. The national average is 21 and only 0.33% of all test takers earn a perfect ACT score according to Prep Scholar.

ANNUAL AUCTION GOES VIRTUAL VIRTUAL AUCTION SURPASSES GOALS! The 2020 “Miege Fever” auction was a history making event as we went totally virtual via Facebook Live due to the pandemic. Staff and volunteers rallied to host a tremendously successful event, raising over $366,000 to support Catholic education at Bishop Miege. Due to the generosity of so many Miege supporters, we exceeded our $250,000 goal and raised over $288,000 for Fund-a-Need to help Miege families financially impacted by COVID-19. Our alumni, parents, faculty, staff, and friends of Miege once again came together to tackle a new challenge and overcome obstacles, demonstrating we really are MIEGE STRONG. THANK YOU to all who participated in the auction in any capacity!

Emcees President Randy Salisbury and CMT Director, Bill Creach get into character for the disco themed night of fundraising going “live” on Facebook.

Foundation Award Honorees ALUMNA OF THE YEAR The Bishop Miege Alumni of the year award is presented to a graduate who has given his or her time, talents and loyalty to enhance Bishop Miege and its traditions. The 2020 award was presented to Fran (Watkins) Douthat, class of ‘82. Fran’s support of Miege was modeled for her by her parents and siblings; being involved and giving back was a trait that was instilled in her from a young age. As a Miege parent Fran was a member of the Mothers’ Club and served as club president for two years. She also organized and co-hosted the annual Men of Miege night, an event for fathers and sons. Fran has been a supporter of the Annual Fund since its inception in 1989 and she has assisted with the annual auction for many years. Fran has also held leadership roles for two of our largest capital campaigns. She has served on the Miege Foundation Board since 2013 and currently holds the office of Secretary/Treasurer, she is also the Chair of the Foundation’s Board’s Investment Committee. Fran’s long history of service and stewardship has been remarkable.

HERB ROME AWARD The Herb Rome Stewardship Award was established in 2010 in memory of Herb’s commitment to Miege which spanned decades. Each year the Foundation recognizes one individual who exemplifies the passion and dedication that Herb had for Bishop Miege. The 2020 recipient was Dick Anderson, whose leadership over the past 25+ years has been a tremendous benefit to the growth, success, and financial stability of Bishop Miege. Dick was involved in the very first large initiative for Miege in 1989, the addition of the area’s first computer lab. He has remained involved at the forefront of our initiatives for over two decades, including all of our major capital campaigns and the Bridge to the Future scholarship drive. During this time Dick was also a key supporter of the Annual Auction, Annual Fund and Dream House. He has been instrumental in establishing a culture of stewardship that will continue to serve our school community for decades to come.

MEMORIALS LYNN SALISBURY

Mary Lynn Salisbury (Tavernaro), Miege alumna, class of 1984; passed away February 2020, surrounded by those who were her world. She was the beloved wife of Randy Salisbury, Bishop Miege President; mother of Miege alumnae Molly (class of 2008) and Maggie (class of 2013); and daughter of former Miege teacher and coach the late Bob Tavernaro and his wife Mary. Lynn grew up in the Kansas City area, attending Bishop Miege High School and Pittsburg State University where she majored in elementary education and met her future husband, Randy.

Lynn was the center of her family, a loving and supportive wife and mother of two, who always made time for friends and family alike. She was a joyful spirit who cherished motherhood and the simple things in life. She lived each day as it came, choosing a positive outlook on life’s circumstances and setting an example to others for living with optimism and joy. Lynn was also an educator, having taught 4th grade for 29 years at Emerson Elementary, Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools. As a teacher she touched many young lives, sharing her knowledge, kindness, and joy. Her memory will live on through those she loved and the many lives she impacted.

PATTY MORGAN

Patricia A. Morgan (Patty) died suddenly on February 29, 2020. She was born in Kansas City, Kansas and was a lifelong resident.

Patty dedicated 25 years working in the Bishop Miege Development Office until her retirement in 2018. Patty truly enjoyed working with the many faculty, families, and students over the years, especially the student fundraisers and auction. She was an avid soccer fan and enjoyed many years watching her children and grandchildren’s success on the field.

The most significant contribution to Bishop Miege was her leadership as a chaperone with the West Virginia Mission Trip. Patty was an integral leader in this ministry of giving for more than 15 years. Her love for the students and the West Virginia community was remarkable. Many of the students chose this trip each year during their four years at Miege—this is unlike any other Mission Trip and speaks highly of Patty’s commitment. In her free time, Patty was an avid reader, seamstress, quilter, amazing baker and cook. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, Emma and Jackson Morgan, and attending their many activities. She was preceded in death by her husband Ronald G. Morgan. She is survived by her children Kenneth Morgan (Colleen) and Kristie Morgan, Class of 1994.

CONSIDER MIEGE IN YOUR ESTATE PLANS “Catholic education is above all a question of communicating Christ, of helping to form Christ in the lives of others.” – Saint

John Paul II to the National Catholic Educational Association of the United States

Why Create a Lasting Legacy at Miege? A legacy gift can leave a lasting mark on our world by helping in the formation of Disciples of Christ. High School is a critical time in a child’s life. In four short years students go through major transformations physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually. Preparing students to be women and men of strong faith, integrity, fortitude and knowledge is a daunting task that Bishop Miege strives to deliver each and every day. Now more than ever it is important that parents have an affordable option for excellent Catholic education that will help form students into disciples of Christ, able to think for themselves in the secular world, equipped to become leaders with a Catholic moral compass.

Building God’s Kingdom in Kansas One Catholic Legacy Gift at a Time. For decades, Bishop Miege has been blessed by a remarkable commitment to our school from our parents, alumni and friends. We ask for your continued support as we work to ensure a strong future for Bishop Miege High School. As you plan for your future, please consider a planned gift to Bishop Miege. There are many options available so we encourage you to visit with your attorney and/or financial planner to determine the best way to remember Bishop Miege in your estate plans. TYPES OF PLANNED GIFTS: • Bequests: Designate a gift to Bishop Miege in your will or trust. • Charitable Gift Annuity: In return for a donation, receive a fixed income for life. •C haritable Remainder Trust: Transfer assets irrevocably to a trust, receive an income for life and the remainder goes to Bishop Miege upon your death. • Retained Life Estate: Donate your residence to Bishop Miege as a beneficiary on a certificate of deposit, an annuity, IRA or retirement plan. • Life Insurance: Designate Bishop Miege as a beneficiary on your life insurance policy or gift a policy you no longer need.

Please contact the Development office at 913-222-5994 or email Molly Peterson at mpeterson@bishopmiege.com with questions or to let us know you have made plans for a gift. We would love the opportunity to thank you for your generous act. We are happy to honor your wishes regarding anonymity.
