ANNUAL REPORT 2022-2023
Dear Bishop Miege Family:
This place is awesome! Pardon me for saying it, but this is my first year here and I am so encouraged by the specialness of this place and all of you. I have already encountered people who desire to help others, strive for excellence, and take steps to make our world a better place. Your footprint on Kansas City is big and the difference you are making is huge. I consider it a blessing to be here, and I look forward to humbly serving you and walking the journey together. I believe the Lord has great things in store and we are to be a light to this world.
First, I want to thank all of our generous donors who are so committed to making Bishop Miege High School better by giving to us in so many ways. Thanks to your generosity, there were several renovations. The gym was renovated, and the court named to honor legendary basketball coach Terry English. The Joseph Michael Pedrotti Innovation Center opened, much of the HVAC system was replaced, the foyer to the gym was remodeled, and the main hallway floor was brought up to date with stained concrete. Now, when you walk in the doors of the school, the excellence that is Bishop Miege is immediately seen. The daily activity of the Pedrotti Center and Math Hub showcases our emphasis on Science, Technology, Math, and Engineering. Directly across the hall, our Learning Resource Center works with students who have learning differences by providing accommodations so they can grow spiritually, academically and socially.
Second, the excellence continues in athletics, robotics, debate, theatre, music, publications and more. Several teams and programs have won state titles this past year, highlighted by the state title for the yearbook staff and national recognition for our publications teacher, Sarah McCambridge. As you look through this report, you will read about the excellence that covers so many areas. It is this goal of excellence and the true “Catholicity” of the school that has drawn me in. It is such a wonderful experience for our students, who come from so many different backgrounds, cultures and abilities. They come together as one and journey towards the Lord of life. The “Miege family” is real and filled with generations of Stags who continue to welcome others into this special school community that has Christ at the center.
Third, as you read through this Annual Report, you will learn about not only the excellence that takes place, but the opportunity that is given. Nearly half of the students who attend Bishop Miege receive some type of financial assistance. This is only possible because of your support and the work of the Miege Foundation, who has established a substantial endowment through Bridge to the Future and other initiatives. Because of these resources, Miege distinguishes itself as a great Catholic school by providing financial support for those in need. I thank all of you for making this happen.
Finally, know that I am grateful for you and your commitment to making Bishop Miege the best Catholic high school it can be. I look forward to journeying with you and our students for many years. You are in my prayers.
God bless,
Phil Baniewicz President
The Bishop Miege Board of Trustees are members of the community, approved by the Archbishop, to manage the activities of the school. In 2010, each high school in Johnson County became their own not-for-profit corporation, with the Board of Trustees responsible for ensuring the mission of the school is consistent with the Catholic Church and the school’s finances and assets are managed appropriately. In addition, the Board of Trustees is responsible for hiring a President. Each Trustee serves a three-year term with a maximum of two consecutive terms.

Enhancing 21st Century Learning
The new Joseph Michael Pedrotti Innovation Center contains new learning spaces equipped with state-of-the-art tools and technology. There are two separate spaces, a Project Studio and an Engineering Lab. Students utilize the two areas for academic investigations to create products and solutions not possible within a traditional classroom.
4
In the Miege Classroom
PROJECT STUDIO: Serves ALL students by providing Project Based Learning opportunities where they create solutions to real world problems with access to rapid prototyping technologies, including 3D printers, laser cutters, microelectronics, vinyl cutters, and traditional woodworking tools.
ENGINEERING LAB: This classroom was needed in order to accommodate the increased enrollment in the Project Lead the Way Engineering program. It is equipped with technology for designing, building, and testing projects related to a wide range of high demand careers.

Robotics Team Helps Student Pump Up the Jams
Reprinted with permission from The Leaven by Moira Cullings
WhenParker McElroy tried out his Halloween costume at Bishop Miege High School here, his smile lit up the entire room.
“It was the most joyful thing I’ve ever seen,” said principal Maureen Engen. “It was what life is about.”
Parker is an 11-year-old boy with quadriplegic cerebral palsy.
“He doesn’t sit without support, he doesn’t stand without support, he’s nonverbal,” said his father Nick.
“When it comes to Halloween,” he continued, “the impact is it’s extremely hard to find any kind of Halloween costume that fits him properly but [also] fits within or on a wheelchair.”
This year, four students on Miege’s robotics team were determined to change that.
They volunteered to create a costume with all the bells and whistles customized just for Parker.
“It meant everything,” said Nick. “For a family like ours, [there’s] a daily fight for anything for Parker — whether it’s through the doctors or insurance or anything.
“When you don’t have to fight, and you can just step back and breathe and [the situation] goes beyond your expectations, it’s a big thing.”
Senior Maggie Swearingen and juniors Norah Heise, Catherine O’Connor and Michaela Wilcox, under the leadership of robotics director Scott Anderson, were eager to make Parker’s Halloween special.
They connected with him through Swearingen’s mom, who works with Parker as a paraprofessional at school and as a caregiver during the summer.
“We were talking [between] us girls about how he needed a costume,” said Swearingen. “We brought it up to Mr. Anderson, and it evolved from there.”
Anderson told the McElroys his robotics team wanted to
6
create a costume based on Parker’s interests.
“For the most part, we’re a very active family,” said Nick. “We do a lot of hunting and fishing and outdoor [activities]. Parker enjoys all that.
“But for Parker, music is his go-to. Music is the one thing Parker enjoys above and beyond everything else.”
When Nick and his wife Kylie suggested a DJ costume, the robotics team was up to the challenge.
“A DJ booth is something [where we could] incorporate the wheelchair into the costume instead of working around it,” said Heise.
The students started the project near the end of August and met with Parker early on to take measurements.
In the off season, the robotics team meets two evenings a week, and the girls spent much of that time working on the costume.
After six weeks, the completed product was equipped with LED lights, two turntables and a red and yellow button — one to play 30 preset songs and the other to make a scratch sound effect.
Anderson said it didn’t take much to get the students motivated. “This project, I would say, is one where the kids did almost all the work,” he said. “I gave little pieces of advice every once in a while, but not much. “And that felt really good. You could tell they had ownership of it.”
“It was a big deal for Parker.”
The second was with family, friends and trick-ortreaters outside the McElroy home on Halloween.
“Helping a person with special needs and making a positive impact on his life has actually changed my life for the better”
For Wilcox, witnessing the effects of her team’s efforts was powerful.
For O’Connor, putting her skills to use in this way was fulfilling. “I was super excited because I’ve always loved helping people with special needs,” she said. “This just deepened that love for it.”
A few weeks before Halloween, the team presented Parker with his costume. He and his family were “blown away with what they provided,” said Nick.
“It was really nice because it was fun to see the happiness between everyone and everything,” said Swearingen. “We were all there cheering. It was really fun to be in that moment.”
Anderson agreed. “The kids know I do smile occasionally,” he said, “but I don’t usually grin that much. But that night, I couldn’t stop smiling just watching him. “It was like pure joy.”
Nick said Parker showed off his costume on two special occasions — the first at a trunk-or-treat event with a group Parker participates in called Hope Outdoors.
“His costume was the hit of the night,” said Nick. “Every child and every adult that were there thought it was the most amazing thing ever.
“Getting to see what an impact the costume made on Parker and his family was so meaningful and wholesome,” she said.
“Helping a person with special needs and making a positive impact on his life has actually changed my life for the better,” she added.

STAG STRUT
A beautiful sunny morning in September was the backdrop to the Annual Stag Strut. Students casually walked laps around Dixon Doll Stadium. Bill Creach ‘83, Director of Campus Ministry, kept the tempo upbeat with music over the sound system. As is tradition, seniors were decked out in fun, creative costumes.
Students raised an impressive $79,316 exceeding their goal and earning an extra day off of school for Thanksgiving break.
Students stepped up to sell $28,150 in car raffle tickets for a chance to win a new 2023 Nissan Sentra. The winning ticket was drawn the night of the Annual Auction.
Mary Mitchell, Miege Class of 1983, was the lucky winner of the new car. For many years Mary has purchased 5 tickets for $100. She was surprised and elated when she received the call informing her she won the car.

Annual Auction 2023
A BIG BANG AT “ALL THAT GLITTERS!”
ANNUAL AUCTION - The gym and commons were transformed into an elegant sparkling event space commemorating 50 years of auctions at Bishop Miege High School. The generosity of the Miege community was unprecedented!
Our community donated over $937,000 to support Miege students! Most of the proceeds supported the Fund-a-Need to build the Joseph Michael Pedrotti STEM Innovation Center and complete the gym and gym foyer renovations. The refinished court, now bears the late Coach English’s name and signature. (see page 19)
Thank you to everyone who played a part in the tremendous success of the auction: donors, underwriters, guests, committee chairs, volunteers, faculty, and the Nigro brothers. Their tremendous support was instrumental in the record-breaking amount raised for the evening.
Special thanks to our auction chairs, Dave and Jennifer (’87) Ruf for their leadership, enthusiasm, and incredible dedication to Miege.

A Message From the Foundation President
Dear Miege Friends,
This Annual Report gives us many reasons to celebrate the amazing spirit of stewardship shown by our school community. Year after year the extraordinary kindness and support of our current parents, alumni and their parents, and our many friends have helped make Bishop Miege the great Catholic high school it is today.
Another reason for celebration is described on pages 22 & 23. The story starts in 1992 when seven individuals had a vision to form the Bishop Miege Foundation (BMF). These loyal Miege supporters came together to form a working group to insure the long-term vitality of the school.
You will find an impressive summary of the many projects the BMF took on over the last 30 years to keep Miege on top. Their vision and leadership coupled with the extraordinary generosity of so many Miege friends like you have established an impressive legacy of stewardship that still lives on today.
Probably the most impactful undertaking of the BMF has been the Bridge to the Future (BTF) endowment and scholarship program. Its goal is simply to keep Miege as affordable as possible for our families for decades to come. You will find the details on pages 24 & 25 of how BTF is currently sustaining our enrollment.
BTF has been a remarkable success due to its community-wide support with over 1,200 donors contributing to the program. However, as you will also read, we still have more work to do as we are just short of getting our endowment to a selfsustaining level. By reaching the $5 million goal we would prevent BTF from becoming a sinking fund. Please consider helping us reach that goal by returning the enclosed response card.
On behalf of the Foundation Board, I want to thank you for all you do to keep Miege strong. Please know you are making a real difference in the lives of our students. We could not do it without your support.
Blessings,

Bishop Miege Foundation
QUICK FACTS FOUNDATION BOARD
The Bishop Miege Foundation was formed as a separate 501(c) (3) in 1992 with the purpose of securing the long-range viability of our school. Since then, Bishop Miege High School students and families have greatly benefited from having the unique two-board structure by utilizing the leadership and commitment of a broad range of members of our school community that serve the two-board structure: The Foundation Board and the High School Board of Trustees (which focuses primarily on the complex operations of the school.)

Five Foundation members (known as “Men in a Tub”) formed an LLC, “Friends of Miege” and agreed to borrow enough money to purchase the Old Mission High School on behalf of Miege until the school could raise the funds to purchase it from the members.
In August, 2007, Don & Patty Kincaid donated the North Campus property after taking over and paying off the bank note.

2000 - Acquisition of the North Campus
In 2000, Bishop Miege acquired the land and facility now known as the North Campus. The land is utilized as practice facilities for soccer, football, softball and baseball. The facility contains our second gymnasium and is utilized by our Robotics squad, wrestling and dance/cheer teams as well. The rental income generated annually from two tenants more than covers all operational expenses of the property.

Four Reasons We Need to Grow Our Bridge to the Future Endowment
1.
When we started serving just one student in 2008, we expected to max out by serving 200 students per year. That is no longer the case as we served 299 last year and that number is climbing.
2.
We initially projected the need to award $500,000 in scholarships per year. That is no longer true either, as $636,000 will be awarded this year and that amount will continue to increase annually.
3.
As tuition levels continue to grow (about 4% each year), the number of families needing assistance and the amount of scholarship funds required to meet their need is also increasing.

Since its inception, Miege’s dependency on BTF to sustain an optimal enrollment level has steadily increased. In the last eight years the percentage of students depending on BTF to attend our school has grown from 30% to 46%. That trend is also certainly going to continue.

“Catholic education has always been a priority for our family and because of the BTF Scholarship, we have been able to keep it that way.”
Dear Donors,
When we began looking at High School options for our four children, we really didn’t think we would be able to send our kids to Miege. Because of the generosity of the donors, our children have received or are receiving a college ready education, made lifelong friends, have had experiences otherwise not afforded to them and have more importantly, grown in their Catholic Faith. Catholic education has always been a priority for our family and because of the BTF Scholarship, we have been able to keep it that way...
We couldn’t possibly thank you for all that you have given our family. We are forever grateful!

Bishop Miege Foundation
Foundation Dinner Honorees
HERB ROME STEWARDSHIP AWARD
This annual award was established to honor members of the Bishop Miege community who, like Herb, display exceptional leadership, stewardship, and long-time service to Bishop Miege High School.
Dr. Janis Steinbrecher was recognized at the Foundation Dinner in November for her tremendous philanthropy across the globe and her unmatched stewardship to Bishop Miege. For over 40 years, Jan and her late husband Tom, who was a teacher and coach at Miege in the 70’s, have funded scholarships to provide tuition assistance for students whose families could not otherwise afford to send their children to Miege.
Jan said at the Dinner that she was always struck by how Miege looks at each student as a unique individual with potential for unlimited success. Jan’s commitment to Miege has been exceptional and we are thankful for her amazing kindness and generosity.
ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR AWARD
Bishop Miege is blessed to have tremendous support from our alumni community. Annually we recognize one alumnus for their outstanding stewardship to Bishop Miege High School.
Dixon Doll, class of 1960, was honored at the Foundation Dinner as the Alumnus of the Year. Dixon and his wife Carol have helped a lengthy list of nonprofits through the years; their kindness towards Miege has been extraordinary.
The Doll’s leadership gift for building the Dixon Doll Stadium in 2007 has provided Miege student
athletes and our entire school community with a first-class venue for many activities.
Dixon is nationally recognized as one of the leaders in Venture Capital. His business prowess has greatly benefited the Bridge to the Future Scholarship program. He made it possible for Miege to benefit from two major venture capital funds that will allow Miege to provide tuition assistance for countless families to send their children to Miege for decades to come.
Miege is grateful for Dixon’s long-time support and the profound impact he has had on our students and families.

We are over halfway to our goal of $300,000.
Will you help support excellence in Catholic education by donating to the Annual Fund?
What makes this place so unique is that every person is valued for who they are. It is something that is beyond the classes, the lockers, and the walls. It is found in every routine, every lunch, every conversation, and every person.

MIEGE ALUMNI RECEIVE DEO GRATIAS AWARD
Prensented by the Catholic Foundation of Northeast Kansas (CFNEK)
Each year, the Catholic Foundation of Northeast Kansas (CFNEK) honors a Catholic family and a Catholic institution active in planned giving and endowments. John and Claudia (Bizal) Caton, both 1970 alums, were this year’s recipients of the Deo Gratias Family Award.
As cited in The Leaven, John has been at the forefront of planned giving within the archdiocese. Archbishop Nauman explained, “John’s been instrumental in establishing several endowment funds for vocations, including two endowment funds for the Serra Club.” John and Claudia have supported the Serra Club for 42 years. The organization is close to their hearts, and it has had a profound impact on their spiritual growth throughout their lives.
Stewardship has been a way of life for the couple throughout their married life. John credits Monsignor Tom Culhane, former pastor at St. Ann’s, with helping Claudia and him understand the value of stewardship. Collaborating with Monsignor, John and others helped establish the very first CFNEK fund through St. Ann’s.
John and Claudia Caton, class of 1970, were presented with this year’s Deo Gratias award by Archbishop Joseph Naumann. LEAVEN PHOTO BY KATHRYN WHITE
John and Claudia have been long-time Miege supporters. They remember their high school years as “the best four years of their educational journey.” They learned about God, stewardship, and leadership at a young age through dedicated instruction and wonderful examples from Sister Martina Rockers and Dorothy Murphy. Sister Martina oversaw STUCO, Claudia was the STUCO secretary, and John was the VP of his senior class. Learning from Sister Martina was a tre-
mendous blessing for both of them. She and Dorothy Murphy taught them life lessons that have served them well.
Two of their three children attended Miege. John and Claudia have been involved in supporting Miege over the years through events like the Bob Frazier Alumni Golf Tournament and helping to coordinate class reunions.
Miege congratulates Claudia and John for receiving the CFNEK Deo Gratias Award!

We are grateful to those who supported the Annual Fund during the 2022-2023 fiscal year for it makes a positive impact on every student, every day. The Annual Fund helps to close the gap between tuition and the actual cost of a Catholic education. A special thank you to the Miege community and to the following alumni, listed by class for their contributions.

Scholarship for the 21st Century
S tag Alumni Support Future Stags
The Class of 1990 initiated the class gift idea of giving back to future Stags their Senior year. They collected donations from classmates and the Student Council to provide scholarships for future students. This has become an impactful tradition of Stags supporting Stags.
In addition, several reunion classes have established scholarship gifts with a current value of $43,384. Miege is grateful to the classes of 1958, 1960, 1964, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1979, 1990, and 2005 for their generosity and their commitment to giving back.
On the occasion of their 30th class reunion, the class of 1991 donated an astounding $60,000 for building repairs through their “30 for 30 Challenge”!
Over the course of the past 34 years, $934,929 has been raised by Stags for Stags!

Planned Giving
Establish a Legacy of Supporting Catholic Education
Bishop Miege relies on the support of the community to provide an exceptional Catholic education that is accessible to all. The generosity of our donors has allowed Miege to provide faith formation to equip next-generation leaders with a strong moral compass, outstanding academics with state-of-the-art learning facilities, and a variety of club and sports activities to allow students to flourish outside the classroom.
We invite you to invest in Miege’s future. Together we can continue to build a community of faith, learning, and service, for generations to come.
Consider These Gifts to Create a Lasting Legacy
• Bequests: Designate a gift to Bishop Miege in your will or trust, ensuring your legacy continues to touch lives for years to come.
• Charitable Gift Annuity: In return for a significant tax-deductible donation, receive a fixed income for life.
• Charitable remainder trusts: Transfer assets irrevocably to a trust, receive an income for life and upon your death, the remainder goes to Bishop Miege.
• Life Insurance: Designate Bishop Miege as a beneficiary on your life insurance policy or gift a policy you no longer need.
• Real Estate: Donate your home, land, or farm to Bishop Miege now or upon your death.
Charitable Giving with Tax Advantages
• Stocks, bonds, mutual funds: Avoid taxes on capital gains by donating an appreciated asset.
• IRA Minimum Required Distribution (RMD) IRA owners age 70½ or over can transfer up to $100,000 to charities tax-free each year through QCDs, providing a tax-smart way to give to a charity. Distributions are made directly by the trustee (bank or brokerage house) of an IRA, to organizations (like Miege) that are eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions. For those who are at least 72, QCDs count toward the IRA owner’s required minimum distribution (RMD) for the year.

Tax Savvy Giving
Alumni Leverages QCDs to Support Miege
Greg Gero ’68, recently returned to Kansas City to celebrate his 55th class reunion. While he was in town, he stopped by to see the changes to the school and talked to the Development Office about establishing a giving plan. Greg felt his Miege education, played a significant role in his successful career, and wanted to give back so others can benefit as he did. Greg has used Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) for several years to donate to Miege. He plans to continue to support current and future Stags using this tax-friendly strategy.
As an IRS-certified volunteer tax counselor with the AARP, Greg has helped many people understand the benefits of QCDs. He assisted Miege in developing the information below.
If you answer “yes” to these questions, a QCD may be a great way to reduce your taxes:
• Are you over 70½?
• Do you have a Required Minimum Distribution(RMD) from an IRA?
• Do you donate money to a 501(c)(3) charity?
Example: A married couple, both aged 72, with combined social security and pension income of $77,000, donates a portion of their RMD to charity. The examples below demonstrate the substantial tax savings by using a QCD for their charitable donations.

We encourage you to consult with your accountant, attorney or financial planner to determine the best way to support Miege. The examples presented above are estimates only. Actual results are dependent upon a variety of variables unique to your situation. Please contact Molly Peterson at mpeterson@bishopmiege.com with questions or to let us know you have included Miege in your estate plans. We are happy to honor your wishes for anonymity.
