20023-24 Bishop Miege Annual Report

ANNUAL REPORT 2023-2024

ONE MIEGE School Spirit

to Holy Spirit

From the President

Dear Bishop Miege Family:

It was the year 2000, a new millennium had begun, and many thought the world was going to stop or end, mostly due to computers not being set to roll over to 2000. There was anxiety, but also hope. After the initial fear, it became a year of celebration and mercy. At that time, I was in Rome taking part in World Youth Day and got to experience the Jubilee year in the home of Mother Church. To see youth from around the world coming to the Lord and celebrating life was inspiring. I learned this type of thing only takes place every 25 years, and I thought the next time it happened was a long way away. Now, here we are in 2025 and it is time again!

The next Jubilee year in the Catholic Church is 2025. Pope Francis announced it as a Jubilee Year with the theme, “Pilgrims of Hope.” Looking back with gratitude and joyfully looking forward are at the heart of what it means to be pilgrims of hope. I mention the Jubilee because it gives everyone a chance to look back as well as be joyful about moving forward. Here at Bishop Miege, I think it is great to look back at what has taken place and be excited about what the future holds. As you look at this Annual Report, you will see how far we have come in not only the past twenty-five years, but just in the last few. What was planted then is now coming to fruition. Since 2000, the school has won 84 state championships, an endowment started in 2003 is now at nearly $20 million, over 300 students per year receive a “Bridge to the Future” scholarship, the school is one of only six schools in the state (and only private school) to be named an outstanding performing arts school for four consecutive years, over 75% of faculty have advanced degrees, numerous alumni have been successful in the world and have returned to help our current students, and our school has the largest freshman class in over a decade. Improvements to the campus continue to take place, with new hallways, desks, STEM-focused opportunities, remodeling of the gym and more.

There is hope in the future too. The faith of our students is growing, their desire to serve others is strengthening, and the pursuit of excellence in many areas continues. Robotics just missed qualifying for nationals last year, and this year most everyone returns. Long-time speech and debate coach Melissa Reynolds, who is one of the most decorated coaches in the country, will have an endowed scholarship created by alumni she impacted.

During my first year as president, I was able to meet with hundreds of alumni, parents, students and faculty to learn more about this special place. I knew about the excellence in athletics, but I wasn’t aware of so many other incredible things taking place. I thought it would be beneficial for others to know the excellence that was taking place in so many other areas outside of athletics, so we started “Miege Magnified,” which is a promotional effort to highlight these outstanding people and areas. The latest video looks at the excellence in our performing arts. I hope you will scan the QR code to take a look.

Finally, know that I am grateful for you and your commitment to making Bishop Miege the best Catholic high school it can be. You are in my prayers.

God bless,

Phil Baniewicz

“Here at Bishop Miege, I think it is great to look back at what has taken place and be excited about what the future holds.”

The Bishop Miege Board of Trustees are members of the community, approved by the Archbishop, to manage the activities of the school. In 2010, each high school in Johnson County became its own not-for-profit corporation, with the Board of Trustees responsible for ensuring the mission of the school is consistent with the Catholic Church and the school’s finances and assets are managed appropriately. In addition, the Board of Trustees is responsible for hiring a President. Each Trustee serves a three-year term with a maximum of two consecutive terms.

Bishop Miege offers a unique high school Biomedical Science track

Our students are diving into every pathway Miege offers – engineering, computer science, and biomedical science. Overall, our PLTW enrollment numbers this year have increased 28%. We’ve added a third class this year in the Biomedical Science pathway called Medical

Biomedical Track Classes In Order: Interventions.

1. Principles of Biomedical Science - This course offers an overview of various science careers, from forensic investigations and autopsies to healthcare roles like nursing and phlebotomy. Students explore disease outbreaks through lab analysis and learn to identify bacteria and viruses.

2. Human Body Systems - Students act as physical therapists by studying muscles, bones, and organs related to specific patient conditions while using clay and a manikin for modeling parts as they learn them. They develop personalized therapy plans and gain hands-on experience in patient care.

3. Medical Interventions - Students follow a family’s genetic cancer case, learning diagnostic tests and personalized treatment planning. They also gain lab experience through projects like designing prosthetic hands and practicing suturing techniques.

For students like Ryan Doble, (far left) his work in the three Biomedical Science classes gave him a clearer picture of the health industry before he heads off to college. He started by thinking he wanted to go to pharmacy school, but now has decided on nuclear medicine technology.

“Through these classes, I learned more jobs and skills that I found an interest in,” Doble said. “Then, we would learn about them, and that really helped me widen my horizons.”

“Before I became a teacher, I worked in a research lab here in Kansas City,” Summers said. “This Medical Interventions course shows the students a number of the techniques I learned in the lab that I didn’t even have exposure to in college.”

- Science teacher Mary Beth Summers ‘02

Students in the Biomedical Sciences pathway have the most success on the PLTW End of Course Assessment and the ACT.

The arts flourish at Bishop Miege High School, where students have the opportunity to pursue their passions and achieve excellence across a wide range of disciplines. Whether it’s through music, theater, journalism, fine arts, or debate and forensics, Miege students are making their mark locally, regionally, and even nationally.

Theater: Miege was named the Cappies Award winner for Best Musical for the KC metro area for the 2023 musical, “All Shook Up.”

Peter Dessert (left) made it to the top eight finalists of the 102 nominees at the 15th annual Jimmy Awards on broadway. He earned a $5,000 scholarship for making it to the top four male actors.

Journalism: The Hart yearbook and Miegian newspapers both won All-American and AllKansas awards.

Choir: Cantare Deum (top mixed choir) and Cantrices (female choir) received 1st, the highest rating possible.

Fine Arts: Grace Stella (left) created “God Is Among Us” and Lola Knauff created “God Our Shepherd” to win Judge’s Choice awards at the 10th Archbishop’s Invitational High School Art Exhibition.

Debate & Forensics: The 4-speaker debate team placed third at state.

Five forensics students qualified to compete at nationals.

Bishop Miege has been named an outstanding KSHSAA performing arts schools for four years in a row, something only six schools in Kansas have done.

Design Creativity Award

STEM - Four of our students competed in the ACE Mentor Program of America end-of-year design competition at Populous Architecture.

They presented a standout presentation, earning the Design Creativity Award for best architectural design among twelve teams. The Miege team presented a design proposal for a new art gallery, event space, and education center at the new American Royal Association site by the Legends.

200 Students in Class of 2028

Freshman Class - The word is getting out, and more families are choosing Bishop Miege! This year, we welcomed our largest freshman class in 10 years, capping enrollment at 200 students. Our newest Stags come from 41 feeder schools across the city, bringing a rich diversity of talents and experiences that strengthen our school. We are excited to see how the members of the Class of 2028 will grow over the next four years, leaving their mark on the Bishop Miege legacy.

1,400 STEM Projects Completed

Project Studio - Miege students made 1,400 individual visits to the Joseph Michael Pedrotti Innovation Center in its inaugural year, with many students completing multiple projects. We had almost all of our students complete a project, and the laser cutter was the tool they used the most. The center became a space for outreach as we partnered with three different Catholic elementary schools to provide immersive STEM experiences for their students.

Enhanced Artistic Medium

Art Department - We’re thrilled to announce the installation of two new kilns and a pottery wheel in our art classroom. We received the pottery wheel thanks to a generous grant from the trust established by Bill Bracker, founder of Bracker’s Good Earth Clays in Lawrence, KS. These new additions will enhance our ceramics program, providing expanded opportunities for students to explore their artistic potential.

LIVING THE FAITH

Senior Marco Rodriguez, First Team All-State quarterback of the Stags, felt inspired by his faith and wanted to share it with others. This year, he launched a bi-monthly Bible study with his teammates, creating a space for spiritual growth and connection. He also began inviting students to attend Mass with him, leading to a growing group attending the youth Mass on Sunday evenings at Holy Trinity Parish.

“Going into the season, I knew it was something that I wanted to do, and I knew I had a bigger role to play than just being the quarterback. All the guys aren’t Catholic so I was like, ‘How can I represent Christ to them?’

That was something that was heavy on my heart, especially how the season was going, not putting your identity in wins or losses because that’s going to happen regardless. Always have your identity in Christ.

One thing that was big for me going into this season was last year I had a lot of confidence issues, but this year

I’m really making sure that my identity’s in Christ. My identity is not in an interception, it’s not in a loss. It’s always going to be in Christ because I know that however I play, he’s always there for me.“

Beyond the Classroom

It’s been an exciting 2024 fall for our sports teams. Here are a few recent highlights:

The volleyball team pulled off the 3-PEAT to defeat Rock Creek to win the program’s 29th state title. Senior Lauren Lopez was the 4A Player of the Year with four other players earning All-State awards.

The Stag cheerleaders placed 2nd in Topeka at the Gameday Showcase — the highest since 2017! It was even more impressive because they were spending their Friday nights of the competition season cheering on the football team all over the state before competing on Saturdays.

The football team defeated Tonganoxie 48-13 to become sub-state champions. They competed in a hard-fought, back-and-forth state championship game against Andover Central. The 42-49 game saw senior Teryn Jackson haul in seven passes for 225 yards and four touchdowns. Senior Marco Rodriguez threw three of those touchdowns and ran in another.

Annual Auction

Thanks to the generosity of our community, we raised $460,000 for our Fund-A-Need to upgrade our school environment with new desks for classrooms and resurface the floors of our hallways and stairwells. The new desks have been much more comfortable for our students, and the hallways look great. There was a surplus of funds, so $55,000 was redirected to the Bridge to the Future Endowment with donor approval. Thank you for supporting our mission to provide the best learning experience possible!

Bishop Miege Foundation

Dear Miege Friends,

There are many wonderful ways to thank and recognize those individuals who have made a significant difference in our lives. Each of us is challenged to not overlook opportunities to express our gratitude to those special people who have made a powerful impact on us. Included in this group could be parents, other family members, friends, mentors as well as teachers/coaches.

Bishop Miege president Phil Baniewicz announced the exciting news to our faculty in January that a group of alumni was initiating a scholarship fund to honor Mrs. Reynolds for her many years (and counting) of leading the Bishop Miege debate and forensics programs. There will be more information to come on the Melissa Reynolds Scholarship Fund.

The Named Fund portion of the Bridge to the Future (BTF) scholarship endowment offers a way to say “thank you” while providing opportunities for a young person to grow and develop at Bishop Miege. Another key aspect of this gesture is that the donation becomes a legacy gift that will be part of a permanent endowment whose fruits will continue for decades to come.

In addition to a Named Fund in BTF serving this purpose, it also provides an opportunity to memorialize a loved one or establish a family fund that helps our school perpetuate its mission of forming our students in Christ’s image while providing an excellent education.

Blessings,

About Named Funds in the BTF Scholarship Endowment:

There are three categories:

Memorials – in honor of someone’s passing Family – initiated with the intent to grow the fund Tribute – initiated to recognize/honor an individual

Guidelines:

All of our named scholarship funds are held by the Bishop Miege High School Foundation in the Bridge to the Future endowment as legacy gifts.

Any amount can establish a named fund in the endowment and the fund is open to additional contributions moving forward. In addition, scholarships are awarded – if desired by the family – in the chosen fund name to qualified recipients based upon need once the fund has reached $50,000, and on increments of $50,000 moving forward on a 4% basis.

Example $50,000 = one $2,000 scholarship; $100,000 = $4,000 in scholarships, etc.

Please contact Molly Peterson in the Miege Development office if you are interested in learning more about our Named Fund opportunities.

2024 Award Recipients

The Herb Rome Stewardship Award was created to honor members of the community who, like Herb, display exceptional leadership and long-time service to Bishop Miege. Dave and Mary Lou Richardson received this year’s award for their dedication.

The couple chaired the Booster Club, and Dave served on and chaired the Board of Trustees, while Mary Lou served as treasurer for the Mother’s Club.

The Alumni of the Year Award celebrates one member of our alumni community for outstanding stewardship to our school. Jennifer Barber Ruf (‘87) was recognized for this year’s award after her years of volunteering at Miege.

Over the nine years her four children attended Miege, Jennifer served in a variety of ways, including as an auction chair and a supporter of the Stag cheer, dance, and theater programs.

30+ Years Supporting the Annual Fund

“Since 1965 when the Whitmore family moved to Kansas City, we were blessed to attend and support Bishop Miege High School. Through three generations of Whitmores, we feel it is our duty and responsibility to give back to the school that delivered outstanding education for our family and gave us so many treasured memories.” - Mike Whitmore

(Back row) Matt Geary, Jake Whitmore ‘22, Marc Whitmore ‘93, Rob Sciachetano, Brady Sciachetano ‘27, Luke Whitmore ‘25, Mike Whitmore ‘67

(Front row) Michelle (Azierre) Whitmore ‘93, Sherry Whitmore, Dana (Whitmore) Geary ‘99, Leah Geary, Livia Sciachetano ‘30, Connor Geary, Cole Whitmore ‘28, Lisa (Whitmore) Sciachetano ‘94.

Mike and Sherry Whitmore, current Bishop Miege grandparents, exemplify a legacy of faith and family through their three children and seven grandchildren.

Mike Whitmore, a graduate from the Class of 1967, continues to demonstrate his passion for Bishop Miege. It started when he and his wife, Sherry, sent their three children to Miege: Marc ‘93, Lisa ‘94, and Dana ‘99. Their love for the community and traditions were handed down to their kids and now their grandkids.

Currently, Luke ‘25, Brady ‘27, and Cole ‘28 are forming great memories as the third generation of Whitmores to walk the halls of Miege. They have been leaders and actively involved in sports and activities. As most know, Mike and Sherry will be at Miege supporting their grandkids from the stands/sidelines as they did for their own children. Their support goes beyond cheering. To give back and set an

example to their family, Mike and Sherry have been steadfast supporters of the Annual Fund Appeal contributing for over 30 years. Since 1993, their commitment to the school and its mission is a testament to their belief in the power of Catholic education and community.

In addition, Mike remembers his late sister Kathy by donating in her name. She and her husband Tim Reilly, were both graduates from the Class of 1971.

Mike and Sherry’s enduring support for Bishop Miege Catholic High School exemplifies the spirit of family, faith, and tradition that defines the Miege community.

Stags Supporting Stags

We’ve loved seeing how many alumni are coming back this year!

Our alumni have been instrumental in helping us roll out our new Impact Days. These Wednesday Impact speakers share with students how they can make an impact outside the walls of Bishop Miege.

We loved having Tim Weaver ’91 as our keynote speaker talking about servant leadership to wrap up our last Impact session of the semester.

Paris marked Tim’s fifth Olympics on the Team USA Olympic track and field coaching staff and his favorite so far. At the Olympics, he worked with everyone from marathoners to the 100-meter sprinters, shot putters and vaulters.

He credits his incredible teachers and coaches at Miege for their impact as he’s found success in both his coaching and the business world.

“I loved my time at Miege, and it certainly put me on a path for some wild adventures,” Tim said. “I’m so grateful and hope that the current students can see how a Miege foundation can take you anywhere you want to go.”

So far, over 60 professionals have worked with our students this semester through Impact session, and we’re just getting started.

60+ 400 32 150 Professionals helping for first semester Impact Days People registered for our Homecoming Alumni Tailgate Careers represented on Career Day People at our Homecoming Golf Tournament

Tim Weaver ’91, keynote speaker, during the last Impact session of the semester.

This year, Bishop Miege launched its first All Stags Reunion! By moving the Miege Golf Classic to Homecoming Weekend and introducing an alumni tailgate before the big game, we brought generations of Stags together for fun and school spirit. We look forward to making this memorable experience a tradition for years to come.

Save the date for next year’s All Stags Reunion on October 10-11, 2025.

Miege alums at the All Stag Reunion tailgate. Lisa (Perez) Gill ‘89, Natalie (Bock) Hall ‘89, Gina (Santoyo) Perez ‘95, and Rita (Perez) JonScher ‘91.
Nile Cobb and alums A.J. Mohler ‘11, Nathan Mohler ‘14, and Matt Conaghan ‘14 at the Golf Classic that took place at Drumm Farm Golf Course as part of the All Stags Reunion.

Planned Giving

As an alum, I’ve chosen to include Bishop Miege in my estate plans because I feel very fortunate that my experiences at Miege helped form my core values that have made me the person I am today. High school is often the place students develop the values that will guide them for life. I want to support Miege in continuing to form students of strong moral character and good judgment. ~ Denis Viscek, ‘69

Establish a Legacy of Supporting Catholic Education

After graduating from Miege in 1969, Denis Viscek attended the University of Kansas, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business and later achieved his MBA. After an impressive career in financial leadership, Denis retired in 2021 as the Chief Financial Officer of By The Bay Health, a role he held for 13 years. Prior to that, Denis served as President of both Viscek Management (2007–2021) and Cryo Management (2006–2020), dedicating over a decade to each organization.

During his time at Bishop Miege High School, Denis was deeply involved in a wide range of activities. He was a member of the Moose Pack, Math Club, National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Fine Arts Club, and the Ways and Means Committee. He also contributed to the Prom Committee and performed in talent shows. Denis competed in the Battle of Witts, played intramurals, belonged to the choir, and earned recognition on the Honor Roll.

Bishop Miege is grateful to our donors who are instrumental in helping Miege provide enriching faith formation, academic excellence, and clubs and sports activities that allow students to flourish outside the classroom.

Your gifts are fundamental to the future of our students.

Consider a Gift to Create a Lasting Legacy

• Bequests: Designate a gift to Bishop Miege in your will or trust.

• Beneficiary Designation: Name Bishop Miege as a beneficiary of your bank accounts; retirement assets such as 401Ks, IRAs and pensions; investment accounts, life insurance policies, and Donor Advised Funds (DAFs).

• Charitable Gift Annuity: In return for a significant tax-deductible donation, receive a fixed income for life.

• Charitable Remainder Trusts: Transfer assets irrevocably to a trust, receive an income for life, and upon your death, the remainder supports Bishop Miege.

• Life Insurance: Gift a policy you no longer need or name Miege as a beneficiary of your policy.

• Real Estate: Donate your home, land, or farm to Bishop Miege now or upon your death.

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” - Matthew 6:21

Tax Savvy Giving

Tax Advantages of Gifting Appreciated Stock

When you make a charitable gift of cash, you get a charitable deduction on your income taxes (if you itemize). When you make a charitable gift of the same value with appreciated stock, you get the same charitable tax deduction, and you avoid capital gains tax on all of your capital gains.

At a 10% to 37% tax rate, you would save $100$370 in taxes for every $1,000 of appreciated assets you gift to a nonprofit organization like Bishop Miege.

IRA Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs)

IRA owners age 70½ or over can transfer up to $105,000 to charities tax-free each year through QCDs, providing a tax-smart way to give to a charity. Distributions are made directly by the trustee (bank or brokerage house) of an IRA to organizations (like Miege) that are eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions. For those who are at least 72, QCDs count toward the IRA owner’s required minimum distribution (RMD) for the year.

Please contact Molly Peterson at mpeterson@bishopmiege.com with questions or to let us know you have included Miege in your estate plans.

We are happy to honor wishes for anonymity.

We encourage you to consult with your accountant, attorney, or financial planner to determine the best way to support Bishop Miege.
