n late March, the Chamber released results of the 2015 economic outlook survey. While making progress, the highest-rated issue was again talent attraction and retention. While the economy is leveling in our community and state, the demand for employees remains at an all-time high. Since this was identified as a top priority in the Chamber strategic plan, I want to point out some specific ways the Chamber is addressing this issue. First, in this issue of the Connection is an article on the BMDA led effort to “Make a Mark” in Bismarck-Mandan. This online media campaign started in mid-March and is generating substantial traffic to the BMDA website. The goal is to gain the attention of employees in specific, identified areas. This effort is part of the prosperity agenda between the Chamber and BMDA created as a result of the strategic planning process. Second, the Chamber is leading an aggressive legislative agenda. This includes advocating for funding to enhance childcare facilities, affordable housing and internship programs. Other issues garnering attention from the Chamber are tax policy, infrastructure funding and the Department of Commerce budget for the biennium. Third, the Chamber is assisting Bismarck Industries and Bismarck Futures in pursuing the proposed Five South project. This multi-use development will include apartments and amenities with an eye to young professionals, retail, restaurants and bars and, if all goes well, a full-service hotel. This effort, led by members of the business community, is a visionary project to change the perception of the community and position us to effectively compete for young professionals. Fourth, on April 9, the Chamber is hosting its first “New Resident Welcome.” This event will showcase events, organizations and things to do in the community for new employees and their families. The Chamber is consistently asked how to engage new employees in the community and this is our answer to that question. Please encourage your new employees to attend this event at Shiloh Christian School in their new Commons Area. Until next month, think spring...and be sure to file your taxes by April 15.

Make Your Mark Campaign Encourages Relocation to Bismarck-Mandan

By Jennifer Greuel, Clearwater Communications At any given time of the year, Bismarck-Mandan has between 3,300 and 4,000 open job positions. “Even if we took every person who is on the street today without a job, we would still have open jobs,” said Brian Ritter, president of the BismarckMandan Development Association (BMDA).

Recognizing the workforce shortage facing the community, BMDA and the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber of Commerce teamed up to create the Make Your Mark Campaign. Launched on March 2, the online marketing campaign is designed to recruit talent from outside North Dakota and encourage individuals to relocate to Bismarck-Mandan. “The primary objective of the campaign is to get people from outside the market to come here and to fill those jobs,” said Ritter.

Judy Sauter, BMDA’s marketing and research director, said the campaign is similar to the “Find the Good Life in North Dakota” campaign promoted by the North Dakota Department of Commerce, except with a focus on specific job candidates and the Bismarck-Mandan community. “Bismarck and Mandan, like the rest of North Dakota, have been leaders in job creation and have low unemployment rates. The downside to these achievements is that our businesses face a chronic workforce shortage that is particularly acute for skilled and professional jobs,” said Richard Matteson, chair of the Chamber’s board of directors. According to Heather Jones, chair of BMDA, North Dakota is competing for talent with communities and states from across the nation. “Make Your Mark is unique from any other community campaign in our region. It sets us apart from the fray and details what our thriving communities have to offer,” she said. BMDA led the creation of the campaign, and the Chamber offered feedback during the development stage and is now assisting in the campaign’s marketing efforts. Matteson says he appreciates BMDA allowing the Chamber to be involved. “That sort of communication is a good example of the frequent collaboration between the Chamber and BMDA in areas where we have common interests and can coordinate our efforts,” he said.

Those involved say the key to the campaign’s success is prioritizing the area’s most needed skills sets. “We know that we can’t fill all of those thousands of jobs, and we can’t address everything. In order to try and make a difference, we wanted to focus,” said Sauter.

www.bismarckmandan.com BMDA then spoke with North Dakota Job Service about what occupations are most needed in the area. “We looked at ones that, for the most part, you cannot get the training here in Bismarck-Mandan,” added Sauter. The five occupations included in the campaign are nurses, commercial drivers, engineers, diesel mechanics and skilled trades such as welders, plumbers and electricians. According to Sauter, organizers first looked at where alumni from North Dakota high schools and colleges were living since graduation. They then collaborated with KK Bold to consider additional variables, including locations of colleges and universities that train students in the target areas, areas with high unemployment rates and states with a similar climate to North Dakota. “You might get a person from Alabama to move here for a job, but in our conversations with employers, those people are not going to stay. So if you are from Wisconsin, the weather is not going to bother you,” said Sauter.

BMDA has designed five separate advertisements, each concerning one of the targeted professions. When potential applicants contact BMDA, the organization is prepared to help interested parties connect with different companies in Bismarck-Mandan. Sauter explained the target audience is people with connections to North Dakota. “We found out it is important these people are familiar with North Dakota and they have been here before, so there is more of a reason for them to come back and stay.” This focus on North Dakota connections may help the Wallwork Truck Center in Bismarck, said Curry Quenette, branch manager. “Technicians are in demand everywhere right now, so they have their pick of where they want to live. It’s hard to compete with a shop that’s near their hometown or in a more desirable climate,” he said.

Designing a flexible campaign, which focuses on the precise needs of the communities was important, said Ritter. During the 16-week scheduled run of the first segment of the campaign, BMDA will monitor whether one advertising medium is working better than the others, allowing their strategy to be altered, if necessary, mid-campaign.

The timing of the campaign in early spring was planned carefully to allow families time to begin relocating in the summer, said Sauter. After the first segment of the campaign is complete, BMDA will assess the future direction of the Make Your Mark Campaign. This could mean a follow-up campaign in the fall or next spring, she added.

“The great thing about the first phase of the Make Your Mark Campaign is that it is measurable and flexible,” said Jones. With information such as the number of impressions and website visits available, BMDA can quickly adjust or shift direction. “In addition to the online part of the campaign, the BMDA plans to use the Make Your Mark Campaign in recruitment job fairs, collaborations with the Chamber and North Dakota Job Service, and even working with the North Dakota Department of Commerce to enhance the Good Life campaign.”

“Employee recruitment and retention are priorities for both organizations, and both are developing complementary pieces of a long-term solution,” said Matteson. “If Make Your Mark can persuade prospective employees to take a closer look at our communities, they will find a lot to like.” The goal of the campaign is to create an awareness that there are opportunities in Bismarck and Mandan, said Ritter, noting the hope is North Dakota citizens will become more knowledgeable about the opportunities available and become ambassadors to friends and relatives interested in moving to the area. “We know where we need the jobs, and we think we know who the people are,” said Ritter. “Now we just have to go get them.”

A: Currently I have become the ND Regional Manager and I was the General Manager of My Place HotelBismarck for the past two years. Q: Briefly tell us the history of My Place Hotel. A: The visionary team behind My Place Hotels of America has been involved in nearly every aspect of the hotel business for almost 40 years. My Place CoFounder, Chairman and CEO Ron Rivett co-founded Super 8 Motels Inc. in Aberdeen, South Dakota in 1974, along with long-time friend Dennis Brown. After selling the wildly successful Super 8 Motels System in 1993, Ron remained in the hotel business, developing, building and operating Super 8 motels and other branded properties as a franchisee until 2011.

Leadership Bismarck-Mandan: Media Day

The class had the opportunity to hear from all forms of media-radio, newspaper, television, online, and social.

Area media professionals present to the Leadership Bismarck-Mandan class.

The class learned that it is important to meet within their organization to decide what news is and what isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t. The timing of a story is very important as to when to report it. Good writing skills are important as well as fact checking when reporting Dakota Carrier Network (DCN) high-speed network allows business data to travel across the state or around the globe with over 40,000 miles of fiber optics in North Dakota. Our state leads the nation in the amount of fiber deployed per subscriber. Some of their services are provided to hospitals, government, financial institutions. They also host a data center for Netflix and Google. The business side of marketing was presented to the class and examples were given regarding constructing client images, building trust, public relations vs. advertising and how to get your message across.

When using social media, have a strategy as to who you are and what you want to present. A community panel made up of National Guard, Dakota Media Access & HDR Engineering talked about how they develop client relationships, press releases, and communicate within their organizations as well as outside to general public. Most businesses have a crisis communication team to develop and deliver their message depending on the situation. The class took a trip to the Bismarck Tribune where they went through the steps to print the daily newspaper. Legislative/Political Involvement day

There are 47 districts in North Dakota (two House representatives and one Senator from each district.) The class learned how bills are introduced and the process of a bill. Then the class attended some committee hearings.

A mock hearing was held for the class regarding a bill introduced several sessions ago. The class participated in the mock hearing. Several class members testified in favor, against and were questioned by committee members. Each class member had an opportunity to sit with a representative on the house floor The class learned the role of a lobbyist as an individual, business representative and what a legislator expects from a lobbyist. Then the class learned how to track and monitor bills of interest, develop a position in favor or against, draft testimony, provided 3-hole punch information for committee hearings.

The class learned the importance to believe in the organization you represent, be informed and prepared and get to know your legislators. When testifying, tell a story and be clear on why you are in favor or against Lt. Governor, Drew Wrigley, poses with the Leadership Bismarck-Mandan Class of 2015 a bill. Then the class learned the roles of the Senate Majority and Minority Leaders. They provided the class with some great advice such as: we are all leaders, even if you are not in a head position; it’s not about me, but about the people; and get interested in running for legislature, listen and learn. Lastly the class learned how to get involved and where to start if interested in running for office. It is important to be active in your district and be active in your campaign. Monopoly Tournament is a Huge Success On Saturday, February 21st, the 10th Annual Hasbro Junior Achievement Monopoly Tournament took place at Sunrise Elementary School. With about 100 players, the cafeteria at Sunrise was transformed into tables and tables of potential tycoons.

The atmosphere was intense as bankers tried to keep on top of the happenings at each table, making sure all rules were followed by the players who were anxious to occupy as many properties as they could in as short a time as possible. Kids and adults alike were vying to get the first Monopoly and prizes were given out for the first bankruptcy and the first person to own all the property in a category. When the players weren’t engaged in Monopoly, they were in the game room where they had the opportunity to try their hand at one of the flight simulators provided by Aviation Education ND and Sean Davis. Our official “Banker” was Lance Rambousek, and our very own Ms. Monopoly, Nicole Morrison Mathern, was the hostess with the mostess! BPS look at enrollment projections On March 9, Bismarck Public Schools heard recommendations from a demographer on how to deal with the projected growth of 22-hundred new students in the next five years for an average annual growth of 440 students in grades K-12.

Once the Liberty addition is completed (100 seats) and if all elementary classrooms are filled to maximum capacity, the district will have room for 997 elementary children next year. With an average K-5 enrollment increase of 200 each year through 2020, little space would be left available. Superintendent Tamara Uselman says, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Most of our open spaces in grades K-5 are in our older schools in more established neighborhoods, while newer schools on the edge of development are full to overflowing.â&#x20AC;? The demographer, who looks at a variety of growth factors such as birth rates, construction, home purchases, oil prices, etc., predicts that by the school year 20192020 classrooms in the district will be overcapacity in grades K-12 by more than 300 students, even with the addition of four classrooms at Liberty this summer and the opening of Legacy High School in the fall. At the elementary level, Liberty enrollment will continue to be an issue, even with four more classrooms. Highland Acres, Lincoln and Solheim will also experience more students than their current maximum capacity. The largest pressure point will be at the middle level, which will be overcapacity starting next school year.

To handle future enrollment growth, the Bismarck School Board will be looking at ideas such as redrawing boundaries, busing children to schools outside of their neighborhood attendance area, using portables, building classroom additions, buying land for future schools, reconfiguring schools or grade levels, and/or moving students into Hughes as Legacy students will be out of the building by fall. The last time demographer Rob Schwarz with RSP and Associates made predictions for enrollment growth in Bismarck Public Schools, his projections were 99.5 percent accurate.

Public invited to TALK 2015 addressing Human Rights  The public is invited to attend “TALK 2015: Human Rights Challenges and Solutions” on Saturday, April 18, from 9:00am to 1:00pm at the North Dakota Heritage Center. TALK 2015 will feature four experts involved with current human rights issues in the state. Bismarck native Shannon Galpin, global humanitarian, activist, author, speaker, and founder of Mountain2Mountain, will serve as keynote. TALK 2015 is sponsored by the State Historical Society of North Dakota, United Tribes Technical College, and the North Dakota Humanities Council. The $20 registration fee includes lunch.    Tim Purdon, former US Attorney, will be addressing human trafficking challenges in North Dakota. North Dakota Indian Affairs Commissioner Scott Davis will present a conversation about race. Featured at the luncheon will be US Senator Heidi Heitkamp presenting on combating human trafficking at the state and national levels.

Named a National Geographic Adventurer in 2013, Shannon Galpin founded the non-profit Mountain2Mountain and the activist organization, Combat Apathy, to fight for women’s and girls’ rights around the world. An avid mountain biker continually focused on breaking gender barriers, she became the first person to mountain bike in Afghanistan in 2009, a country where the culture does not allow women to ride bikes. “We invite the public to participate in this thoughtful morning of presentations and conversation,” said Kim Jondahl, Communications and Education director with the State Historical Society. “TALK 2015 will help increase awareness and provide an important discussion about key challenges and opportunities in combating some current human rights issues in our state.”

Government and TRADEMARK REALTY TO EXPAND AND OPEN Community Access Channels Now in NORTH OFFICE Trademark Realty has signed a lease for a second High Definition location in Bismarck, N.D. The firm announced expansion plans and the addition of significant office space in north Bismarck to allow for future growth.

Local Government and Community Access programs can now be viewed in full high definition (HD) in the Bismarck – Mandan area on cable channels 602 and 612 respectively. The Government and Community Access channels are managed by Dakota Media Access (DMA) and are available on the Midcontinent Communications cable system. Viewers can now watch programming in either HD or SD on cable, or on the website to watch live streams. Government meetings and most community programs are also archived, allowing viewers to search for and view on demand at www.freetv.org. “The time was right to provide this upgrade in quality that puts us on par with other cable programming,” said Jack McDonald, DMA’s Board President. “DMA has been producing program content in HD for many years, but we were not able to transmit in HD. Now, with the cost of HD transmission equipment becoming more affordable, combined with Midcontinent Communication generously providing us the channel capacity, we are able to bring the HD service to the Bismarck-Mandan community.” HD equipment upgrades were also made to both the Bismarck and Mandan city hall meetings rooms. New HD cameras were installed, as well as a new HD switching systems, audio controls, and titling software in each control room. The Government Access channel presents over 250 live municipal meetings and public affairs programs that take place in Bismarck and Mandan, and Burleigh and Morton counties, annually. “This HD upgrade is more than a beauty makeover,” said Mary Van Sickle, executive director, DMA. “It conveys that our programming is valuable, timely, and relevant. Mandan Park District awards universal playground equipment contract The Mandan Park District awarded a contract to Landscape Structures March 9, to build and install equipment at the universal playground being planned at Eagleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Park. Landscape Structures, a nationally known leader in the design and construction of universal playgrounds, is represented locally by Dakota Fence. The playground, scheduled to open this fall, will allow people of all ages and abilities to play together. The project is being led by the Mandan Park District and a group of community volunteers. To date, funds raised a total of $349,662. Additionally, Mandan Parks & Recreation has committed $100,000 to the project in its 2015 budget. The total estimated cost of the project is $500,000.

Grant to Help Reduce Teen Driver Fatalities in N.D.

The most dangerous year of a person’s life is the first year they learn to drive.* To help improve teen driver safety in North Dakota, State Farm has awarded a $15,000 grant to the North Dakota Safety Council (NDSC). The NDSC will use the grant dollars to provide affordable and life-saving driver safety training to teenagers across the state. “State Farm is committed to making the roads safer by encouraging new drivers to be safe behind the wheel,” says State Farm Public Affairs Specialist Kelly Savage. “We appreciate what the NDSC is doing to help make this possible.” Alive at 25 is a 4.5 hour Defensive Driving Course for drivers and passengers ages 14 to 24. The course addresses inexperience, distractions, peer pressure and how to reduce the risk of being involved in a fatal car crash. With support from the State Farm grant, the NDSC taught Alive at 25 to approximately 70 high school students Feb. 17th at Dakota Prairie School in Petersburg, N.D. This was the first of several classes to be taught thanks to State Farm grant dollars.

North Dakota’s very first “Star of The Voice,” Gwen Sebastian, is set to headline Medora’s first Country Music Concert Series when she takes the stage on July 4. The Hazen duo, Tigirlily, opens the concert series with their performance on June 26 and Watford City native and wellknown acoustic artist, Jessie Veeder, will perform a special, full-band concert on July 18.

Simmers inducted into North Dakota Aviation Hall of Fame Robert “Bob” H. Simmers was inducted into the North Dakota Aviation Hall of Fame based on his significant contributions to aviation in North Dakota and to his community on Tuesday, March 3 during the Upper Midwest Aviation Symposium held in Fargo March 1-3. The Midwest Aviation Symposium is hosted annually by the North Dakota Aviation Council.

Simmers was born in Jamestown in 1947, into an aviation family. His parents, Francis and Irene Simmers, bought their first airplane the year he was born, maintained a grass strip on their farm east of Jamestown, and both Bob Simmers earned their pilot’s license. As the family initially used aviation for agricultural and social purposes, Bob grew to use aviation as a means of service, activism, and to make a living. Simmers soloed in 1963 and enjoyed the privilege of leisure flight around the farm. In 1984, he turned to aviation as a livelihood, becoming a flight instructor with instrument and multi-engine ratings. He began working as an agricultural applicator and charter pilot for Jamestown Aviation, and soon became a designated pilot examiner, playing a significant role in many pilots’ progression. He continued to teach throughout the years and founded Bismarck Aero Center in 1990 while being actively involved in the leadership of the North Dakota Aviation Council, constantly advocating for the benefits and freedom of aviation, particularly in matters of airspace and pilot safety through practice and training. In 2012 he was appointed by Governor Jack Dalrymple to the North Dakota Unmanned Systems Authority for the purpose of ensuring that General Aviation interests were respected in the development and integration of remotely piloted aircraft. To date, he has accumulated over 16,000 hours of flight time and has flown over 100 different makes and models of aircraft. What is truly remarkable about Bob is his selfless nature amidst all of his accomplishments. As he looks for opportunities to protect, improve, and share aviation, he also gives rides with EAA or on his own to friends and family, raises funds for charities, speaks, writes, organizes, and gives to his community in numerous ways.

Coupled with imaginative solutions, this project will deliver highly functional spaces to the Bismarck community.” The proposed downtown mixed-use project would provide an array of economic benefits to Bismarck and the immediate regions, including approximately 2,600 direct and indirect jobs in the metro area over the six-year construction period, according to a study conducted in 2014. Upon completion, it is estimated that FiveSouth would inject more than $130 million annually to the metro area, as well as spurred off-site visitor spending at neighborhood retail outlets, restaurants and entertainment venues. The Open House will be held in the new concourse of the Bismarck Events Center, and guests are requested to enter at the corner of 5th Street and Front Ave.

Awardees announced for BSC Jack Fellowship

Two Bismarck State College staff members are recipients of this year’s Jack Fellowship from the BSC Foundation Board of Trustees. The fellowship, valued at $25,000, helps BSC faculty and staff further their education, conduct research or pursue other professional development. Janet Dixon, resource development manager, will use her fellowship to complete a master’s degree in forensic psychology from the University of North Dakota. Karen Erickson, director of Admissions and Enrollment Services, is completing a doctorate in education with emphasis in occupational and adult education from North Dakota State University. Hired in 2008, Erickson started as Admissions coordinator and was named director in 2012. During that time she finished a master’s degree in education with emphasis in higher education and student affairs, also from NDSU. Her undergraduate degree from University of Minnesota is in sports and recreation management. Erickson said the terminal doctorate degree was always a long-term goal. She prefers classroom over online study and accesses NDSU classes over the statewide Interactive Video Network. “I just really like that class discussion,” said Erickson, now in her second semester while still working full-time. “It has been more challenging than I thought, but all things worth having are worth working at. I am hopeful my investment will pay off in the long run. A lot of what I’m studying is relevant to BSC.”

Dixon specializes in research and grant-writing for the Foundation. She has worked there in two seven-year stretches – 19972004 as administrative assistant promoted to alumni and programs coordinator, and 2007 to present as a research and grants specialist, grant development coordinator and now resource development manager.

Dixon has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and two semesters completed toward her master’s. She is structuring her elective courses around education to help position her career. Dixon said the fellowship has eased the challenge of juggling work, finances and family. “I wrote the guidelines for the Jack [Fellowship] when it was set Karen Erickson up with the Foundation,” she said, “but I never thought I would be benefiting from this. I feel it is a great honor to receive this opportunity.” The late Tom and Peg Jack, lead contributors to BSC’s Jack Science Center, endowed the Jack Fellowship in 1999. A committee appointed by the BSC Foundation selects the recipients.

Young Professionals Network Presents donation check to special olympics The Bismarck-Mandan Young Professionals Network (YPN) presented a donation check to their non-profit partner, Special Olympics North Dakota - Bismarck, Wednesday, March 18 at Midway Lanes in Mandan.

In February, the YPN hosted their seventh annual ChillN-Bowl tournament and surpassed all expectations by selling out for the second consecutive year. There were 26 teams, 104 bowlers, 26 crockpots and various costumes. During the event YPN raised more than $2,000 for Special Olympics North Dakota – Bismarck. “Once again, the YPN is impacting the community in a positive way. We are so proud that we are able to partner with Special Olympics and that our members gave so generously at this event,” said Heather Welle, YPN President. The partnership between YPN and Special Olympics allows the Bismarck chapter the opportunity to connect with young professionals from around Bismarck-Mandan while providing YPN members with service opportunities throughout the year. Since their partnership began in September YPN has held several fundraising events to benefit the organization. Additionally, YPN encourages members to direct their volunteer efforts toward Special Olympics through coaching, fundraising, chaperoning and assisting players on the field.

Eighth annual Brave the Shave unites Bismarck-Mandan in quest to help conquer kids’ cancer

Bismarck-Mandan and beyond sacrificed hair, money, time and talent today to help conquer kids’ cancer. As a result, more than 180 bald heads roam the community.

The 8th annual Brave the Shave’s signature event was held March 13 at the Missouri Valley Family YMCA. Basin Electric’s Brave the Shave Campaign culminated in a rapid hair-shaving event filled with kids and adults united to raise money for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Green hair, purple hair, short hair, long hair, to ultimately no hair, there was no shortage of spirit, spontaneity and generosity. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity dedicated to raising money for life-saving childhood cancer research and funds more in childhood cancer grants than any organization except for the U.S. government. Since the Foundation’s first grants as an independent charity in 2005, St. Baldrick’s has funded more than $131 million to support the most brilliant childhood cancer research experts in the world. Since Basin Electric brought the “Brave the Shave campaign” to the region in 2008, more than 1,500 volunteers have shaved their heads and raised more than $1.6 million to help fund childhood cancer research and fellowships.

Leading up to today were events hosted by Sanford Medical Center, the Bismarck Bobcats, Kupper Chevrolet and the Elks, where local law enforcement and fire fighters faced off in a third annual “Guns ‘N Hoses” event.

Additionally, the Brave the Shave campaign involves tandem events in Beulah, N.D.; Gillette and Wheatland, Wyo.; and Brookings, S.D. Judge Jorgensen presented AARC award

Donald Jorgensen, retired South Central District judge, was presented the Abused Adult Resource Center’s 21st annual “Love Without Fear” award Friday (Feb. 13) at Pam’s House, AARC’s emergency shelter for battered women and their children. The award honors someone who has made a difference in the community regarding domestic violence. Presenting the award were Tamara Barber, chair of the AARC Board of Directors, and Diane Zainhofsky, AARC executive director. Barber noted that Judge Jorgensen had been extremely fair with victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in his court. She said he also had been a strong advocate for children as well, supporting the development of visitation centers, including the Family Safety Center operated by AARC. “He believed that children should be able to have visitation with both parents, and that process should be done safely,” she said.

Sanford Health Plan selected as insurance provider

Sanford Health Plan will become the insurance provider for the North Dakota Public Employees Retirement System (NDPERS) health plan members beginning July 1. The NDPERS board announced its decision February 19th.   “This is tremendous recognition of our work in North Dakota and the trust the North Dakota PERS board has in Sanford Health Plan,” said Rich Adcock, Sanford Health executive vice president.  The decision will add 29,000 contracts covering 65,000 covered lives to Sanford Health Plan.  “Our existing infrastructure across a broad geography is well-equipped to support these additional members and we will immediately expand our presence in North Dakota,” said Adcock.   Sanford Health Plan is in the process of opening offices in Fargo and Bismarck. There will be more than 100 positions available immediately in the state.  “I want to assure all NDPERS health plan members utilizing our health plan that they can all expect outstanding service from their partners at Sanford Health Plan,” said Adcock.   NDPERS health plan members can expect additional information and multiple member forums at convenient locations in various communities prior to the transition.

Wolf Named ND National Distinguished Principal of the Year!

Lynn Wolf, principal at Sunrise Elementary School, has been named North Dakota National Lynn Wolf Distinguished Principal of the Year by the North Dakota Association of Elementary School Principals. The National Distinguished Principals recognition program is typically held in October in Washington, D.C. culminating in a banquet and awards ceremony. Wolf was recognized last night at the NDAESP mid-winter conference. He has worked for Bismarck Public Schools for 25 years. Wolf has been the principal at Sunrise through the construction and opening of that new school. He was also the principal at Moses and Northridge, as well as an assistant principal and teacher at Solheim and Myhre. Prior to that, Wolf was the principal at St. Joseph School in Mandan, executive director of Mandan Head Start, and a teacher at Mount Pleasant School in Rolla, North Dakota. Council (NDSC) has hired Karen Selensky as their new Training Coordinator. Selensky joins the NDSC with 20 years’ experience in event and meeting planning. CHI St. Alexius Health recently announced the hiring of Timothy J. Bonnell as its new director of safety, security and emergency management. As director, he is responsible for the implementation, maintenance, and revisions to the medical center’s safety and security programs. Tim will plan and respond to disaster situations or bioterrorism events and has authority to act on behalf of the medical center regarding threats of life, health, equipment and buildings. Tim earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from St. John Fisher College, and a Master of Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University. He is a doctorate degree candidate in educational leadership at Northern Arizona University. Langer Earns Certification

Local Bismarck, ND native, Garhett Langer, has successfully completed the requirements to become a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI). He started his aviation career with Sara Bitz Bismarck Aero Center (BAC) Garhett Langer during the fall of 2013 as an Aircraft Maintenance Assistant and Flightline Technician. As Langer’s passion for aviation grew, he dedicated himself to becoming a Professional Pilot and Flight Instructor. He started with his Private Pilot license and in a little over a year obtained his, Instrument, Commercial and CFI ratings through independent study. Beth Kramer With his new CFI rating, Langer will be able to mentor and teach local aviation students towards obtaining their Private Pilot license as well as provide depth to our Flight Department.

CHI St. Alexius Health Names Hilzendeger Radiology Manager

CHI St. Alexius Health recently named Bruce Hilzendeger manager of radiology services. Bruce, along with the director of Bruce Hilzendeger imaging services, is responsible for leading and facilitating change to enhance quality, efficiency and service. He will assist in the development of the annual budget and oversee daily operations of the radiology department. Bruce earned a Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Technology from University of Mary. He is certified with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and registered with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography in physics/instrumentation and abdominal sonography. A native of Napoleon, ND, Bruce joined CHI St. Alexius Health in 1988. He has been a clinical instructor with CHI St. Alexius School of Radiology, and has worked as a technologist in MRI, CT, nuclear medicine and ultrasound and dexa. For the past five years, Bruce was the lead CT/ultrasound technologist.
