Hello Bismarck-Mandan!
It is hard to believe that we have hit the month of May but the sight of things turning green, and the smell of rain means Spring is here. Our partners in agriculture are preparing their fields for their 2024 crop and ranchers have completed over 50% of their calving progress. With the limited amount of snow cover this past winter, those in agriculture will be watching the rain gauges closely to ensure they’ve got the right amount of moisture for crops to grow. We at the Chamber EDC keep a close eye on agriculture as their efforts directly impact the economy of Bismarck and Mandan and we are grateful for our farmers and ranchers.
As we gear ourselves up for your favorite activities this summer at the Chamber EDC; like Lunch on the Patio, Lemonade Day, the Chamber EDC Golf Scramble, and the Sporting Clay Shoot, I’d be remiss if I didn’t give a shout-out to the Chamber EDC staff and all of the member event sponsors for their efforts in providing an amazing evening on April 18 at the Annual Dinner. It was truly a night to remember with plenty of opportunity to connect with over 900 Chamber EDC members to celebrate the great things going on in our communities of Bismarck and Mandan. Mark your calendars for March 13, 2025, for our next Annual Dinner.
As you are all aware, the Chamber EDC embarked upon a complete office remodel project in mid-2023. Brenda and I are happy to report that the project is finally completed, and I hope you will join us in our very own Ribbon Cutting and Open House on May 30, 4:00pm - 6:00pm. This will be a great time to walk through the new space and thank the contractors for their fine work and to celebrate the completion of this project with the staff and our Board of Directors.
And finally, let’s talk a little politics. You will notice that our focus in this month’s Connection is about local candidates who have stepped forward to run for important elected positions in our community, such as city and county commissions, park boards, school boards, etc. There are some uncontested races and that is unfortunate as we had hoped there would be ample candidates to provide choices for the voters of Bismarck, Mandan, Lincoln, Burleigh, and Morton County. At the Chamber EDC, one of the commitments we have to our members and our community is to continue to provide education in what it takes to run for these seats. We hope that you will consider taking part in the educational opportunities in the future. We are grateful for those that have raised their hand and said they will run for an open seat. As these elections get closer, we encourage our members to educate themselves on each of the candidates’ platform and engage in meaningful dialogue with each candidate with a focus on those that are interested in moving business forward.

WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR MAYOR AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THE POSITION?
I’m a lifelong Mandan resident. Outside of my time at NDSU earning my degree in History/Education, Mandan is where I’ve raised my family and participated in our family business. Our business was started in 1947 by my grandfather and his brother-in-law. My 30 years working at MVP, gave me a solid understanding of how Mandan’s economy works, it challenges and opportunities. Mandan is a city of approximately 25,000 people, and the residents expect and deserve first-rate services while maintaining fiscal responsibility. The mayor, being the top elected official in the city, has the responsibility to ensure that services are carried out and meet the needs and expectations of the citizens.
WHAT ARE THE TOP THREE ISSUES THE CITY COMMISSION SHOULD ADDRESS IN THE NEXT FOUR YEARS?
1. Maintain, improve, and expand existing infrastructure.
2. Ensure staffing of Police and Fire Departments to national standards.
3. Work closely with the other government entities to ensure that services are not duplicated.
WHAT IS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT OPPORTUNITY FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN MANDAN AND HOW SHOULD IT BE ADDRESSED?
The most significant opportunity would be the improvements to Memorial Highway. The proper infrastructure and zoning will be very attractive to current and new businesses. Another area of significant economic impact will be the development of West Mandan. We have to figure out how to move the West of the City past Boundary Road.
IDENTIFY ONE AREA WHERE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SET IMPROVEMENT FROM CITY GOVERNMENT. I would like to develop a 5-, 10-, 15-year plan for the city, to give growth and budget projections.

WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR CITY COMMISSION AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THIS POSITION?
I have been a long-time citizen advocate and now the appointed city commissioner with the drive to put in the time to knock on doors, research, engage, and network to represent people in ways others don’t. I dive into issues that matter to Bismarck residents whether they impact them directly or indirectly!
WHAT IS YOUR TOP PRIORITY FOR THE CITY COMMISSION TO ADDRESS IN THE NEXT FOUR YEARS?
Streamlining services in innovative ways to empower businesses access to more opportunities to thrive, in part by reducing smothering ordinances and regulation. Another part of this effort will be continuing to help others have access to services and transportation that are necessary to help them remain independent in their homes and engaged in the community, versus facing isolation or institution.
WHAT IS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT OPPORTUNITY FOR THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY OF BISMARCK AND HOW SHOULD IT BE ADDRESSED?
Bismarck is the best North Dakota has to offer! I invite everyone willing to look at us for their business to thrive, to do so as a partner where everyone benefits successfully. Make plans to do so without a reliance on incentives so we can grow where others don’t. Our country, by history, was built on the grit it took to build success where the world doubted they could, and yet they are around decades and centuries later. We want you here earning it and when you do it ethically, if I have the resources, I will do everything I can to help the business succeed as they benefit the community. I am Mike Connelly, and if you would like to share your perspective or ask questions call me: 701-4001839.
MATT HULL
Bismarck City Commission
WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR CITY COMMISSION AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THIS POSITION?
Bismarck is such a great community. I was recently honored to participate in the Bismarck Citizen Academy. Meeting and talking with the city workers inspired me to be more involved. I'm running because I want to work in partnership with them and uplift the desires of my fellow Bismarck residents as we continue to develop Bismarck into a wonderful place to live, work, and play together. As an archaeologist, I see the unique cultural resources which have historically and will continue to set Bismarck apart.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP PRIORITY FOR THE CITY COMMISSION TO ADDRESS IN THE NEXT FOUR YEARS?
The first question I ask residents is what they would like the city to work on. The most common response I've heard is helping the homeless. I'd like the city to partner with the organizations already working on this and see where we can help them serve those who are homeless. I believe we can find the means to better coordinate these efforts and offer support to the organizations on the ground that are already helping our less fortunate fellow residents.
WHAT IS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT OPPORTUNITY FOR THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY OF BISMARCK AND HOW SHOULD IT BE ADDRESSED?
Bismarck is growing in size and population, which creates opportunities. As stakeholders in the community, business leaders, alongside residents, can help plan how and where the city grows. While we grow physically, we must also keep our downtown vibrant as it sustains the community and attracts outside investment. I see opportunities for the downtown to expand, such as by reusing and repurposing current spaces, and finding new, needed areas for growth, commerce, and cultivation. When we have a healthy business community, we all thrive.

WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR CITY COMMISSION AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THIS POSITION?
I love our community and I want to do my part to help Bismarck thrive. I’ve served on national labor union boards of directors, the board of directors of the UTUIA insurance company and was a church council president. I’ve even had board training. I understand what it takes to bring people together and get things done. My goal is to do my part to make Bismarck an even better place to live and work. I’ve been involved with government relations most of my adult life. I’ve worked closely with leaders from both political parties and the business community. I worked with GNDA to help pass the ballot measure establishing the North Dakota Legacy Fund. Then GNDA president Dave McIver and I traveled the state promoting the measure. I twice chaired the State Minimum Wage Commission, having been first appointed by a Democratic labor commissioner and reappointed by a Republican labor commissioner.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP PRIORITY FOR THE CITY COMMISSION TO ADDRESS IN THE NEXT FOUR YEARS?
Get the Events Center back on track. Six months of unnecessary drama has thankfully ended. Beyond that, providing cost efficient services to our citizens is what I plan to focus on. I want to work on everyday problems, like maintaining our streets, picking up the garbage, police, and fire protection. Our garbage trucks are getting worn out. There are lots of problems to solve and we are very fortunate to have many knowledgeable city employees. The Commission needs to listen to them. In 2022 I participated in the Bismarck Citizens Academy. That program provided me with an excellent overview of how city departments function and allowed me to meet many incredibly dedicated city employees.
WHAT IS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT OPPORTUNITY FOR THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY OF BISMARCK AND HOW SHOULD IT BE ADDRESSED?
I’m excited about the riverfront development. It’s a great opportunity for businesses to help build our community. Overall, businesses should be allowed to prosper with as little government interference as possible. Innovative ideas come from entrepreneurs and city government should allow and encourage those ideas to flourish.

MICHAEL BRAUN Mandan City Commission
WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR CITY COMMISSION AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THIS POSITION?
I am seeking re-election for the Mandan City Commission because I feel the experience and knowledge I have gained over the past three terms have given me the needed benefit of knowing the working dynamics of the Cities functions. I have always desired to serve my community, this is most important. I want to see Mandan grow and prosper for my children, their children and all future generations.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP PRIORITY FOR THE CITY COMMISSION TO ADDRESS IN THE NEXT FOUR YEARS?
At the city level the basic issues will always be the same. Property Taxes and infrastructure costs. As a City Commissioner I must address inflation and cost for products that go up in price each year while balancing the costs needed to maintain the staff and services that the city takes great pride in. Also with these issues is finding ways to budget for future city infrastructure that will eventually be needed for the ever growing emergency services.
WHAT IS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT OPPORTUNITY FOR THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY OF MANDAN AND HOW SHOULD IT BE ADDRESSED?
Mandan is growing and to continue with its expansion its important to promote our business development program which provides funding to new businesses that help curtail some of the start up costs. This can challenging particularly since we are in close proximity to Bismarck.
JOSEPH A. CAMISA JR. Mandan City Commission
WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR CITY COMMISSION AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THIS POSITION?
I am running for re-election to the Mandan City Commission because there is a lot more work to do as we make our community an exceptional place to work, live, and raise our families. Our City has so much to offer residents that live in Mandan and we as a City Commission have to further build upon that momentum. Having the knowledge and understanding of key issues that face our City will allow me to start from day one of my second term. My experience affords me a unique perspective on those issues impacting Mandan. During my term, I was honored to serve as Commission Vice President, sit on the Chamber EDC and several other local/state boards, and work on the state level to improve Mandan.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP PRIORITY FOR THE CITY COMMISSION TO ADDRESS IN THE NEXT FOUR YEARS?
I have several priorities if reelected I would like to continue working on. First, I wish to continue working with our state representatives to further ease the growing cost of property ownership, including fixing the broke Municipal Infrastructure Fund (a.k.a. the Prairie Dog Fund) that offset increasing special assessment costs and studying alternative methods of determining property taxes. I would also like to work on using the expiring sale tax on the Starion Complex to establish a city-controlled infrastructure fund to help buy down some costs of street and water infrastructure projects. In addition to continuing my efforts with existing priorities, such as building a safe community through proactive policing and adequate fire protection.
WHAT IS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT OPPORTUNITY FOR THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY OF MANDAN AND HOW SHOULD IT BE ADDRESSED?
As I wrote four years ago, I still believe the Commission needs to be more active finding ways to grow businesses that support our economy and our small businesses. We must compete with other cities to attract manufacturing, IT, and nonprofit organizations. I will continue to push new incentives Mandan can offer to support the growth of childcare in our community.

HERB KRINGEN Mandan City Commission
WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR CITY COMMISSION AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THIS POSITION?
I’m running for Mandan City Commission because, outside of my time attending college, I’m a lifelong Mandan resident and I love this community. Mandan has big city amenities with a small town feel and I’m proud to call it home. My career has led me through hundreds of doors throughout Mandan. I’ve built many relationships, and I’m excited to be a familiar face that our community feels they can approach in conversation and trust. I serve on the Mandan Progress Organization and really try to be the champion for local Mandan businesses.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP PRIORITY FOR THE CITY COMMISSION TO ADDRESS IN THE NEXT FOUR YEARS?
The Mandan community is growing at a significant rate. We opened a new school in 2023 and our new high school will open in 2024. We’ve built state-of-the-art sports facilities and made necessary improvements to park space. I want Mandan to continue to be a community that is a destination for new families and a place that our youth want to move back to after college. You can have a vibrant community and be fiscally responsible.
WHAT IS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT OPPORTUNITY FOR THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY OF MANDAN AND HOW SHOULD IT BE ADDRESSED?
The area where the High School is being built presents the most significant opportunity for the business community in the next couple of years. This part of town is already feeling the stress of major infrastructure projects. Listening to current local businesses and residents in this area is the first step on how to address the opportunity. Collaboration with these parties and gaining their confidence, that the future shines bright for this area.
WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR CITY COMMISSION AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THIS POSITION?
I want to give back to the City of Mandan, (I have been a Mandan resident for 20 years) and I was asked to run by a current commissioner. Meeting the needs of the people and keeping the city going in its positive direction it is currently doing.
I am a retired educator (administrator, teacher, coach, etc.) for over 40 years. Worked on different committees and boards over these 40 years. Worked on and developed school budgets while creating effective policies meeting the best interest of the Mandan residents.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP PRIORITY FOR THE CITY COMMISSION TO ADDRESS IN THE NEXT FOUR YEARS?
Taxes, especially property taxes. Treat everyone fairly, individual households and businesses. Cultivate the qualities of collaboration and teamwork.
WHAT IS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT OPPORTUNITY FOR THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY OF MANDAN AND HOW SHOULD IT BE ADDRESSED?
Infrastructure: streets, water & sewer, fire department, and law enforcement. We need to continue with the current schedule of repairing streets. Financing for the fire department (updated fire trucks, construction of a north side fire station, etc.) and law enforcement equipment is a priority.

CRAIG R. SJOBERG Mandan City Commission
WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR CITY COMMISSION AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THIS POSITION?
A current Mandan City Commissioner suggested I run for a seat on the commission. My wife and I decided to accept the challenge. So here we are. As an elementary school crossing guard through retirement I have dedicated my life to the service of others. A career in Bismarck-Mandan law enforcement and membership with the Mandan Rural Fire Department allowed me to assist others when they were having a real bad day. I have mentored many firefighters and police officers, and worked with allied departments at local and state levels. Nothing beats stronger than the heart of a volunteer.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP PRIORITY FOR THE CITY COMMISSION TO ADDRESS IN THE NEXT FOUR YEARS?
My top priority is the preservation of a free society at a local level. Engaging in accurate, appropriate, and thoroughly understood communication between local government and our citizenry is essential. The best gift any person can give another is shared knowledge. Small business is the backbone of our communities and should be respected as such. Larger business headquartered elsewhere and operational in Mandan should be appreciated. All business contributes to a lesser tax burden on our citizens. This balance requires courage, fiscal responsibility, and positive mental attitude. A strong community is dependent upon the strength of its citizen’s support. Negative chatter must cease. Positive chatter yields strong communities. Should a problem arise, we must work together as a community to resolve the problem and make our communities stronger. And thus remain free.
WHAT IS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT OPPORTUNITY FOR THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY OF MANDAN AND HOW SHOULD IT BE ADDRESSED?
The most significant opportunity Mandan has right now is timing. Yup, timing. I have experience in team building. We can rally together now to maintain and improve our little piece of paradise and ensure our freedoms while we still have a chance. The time is now. Nothing beats stronger than the heart of a volunteer. LET’S ROLL!

WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR SCHOOL BOARD AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THE POSITION?
I’m excited at the opportunity for another term on the Bismarck School Board and serving students, families, educators, and our community. I believe my past four years’ experience on the board, maintaining a solutions-focused approach to the job, and building a healthy working relationship with our district leadership and our new Superintendent, Dr. Fastnacht, are all great qualifications. More than that, I’m a “hometown kid” who cares greatly about Bismarck and Bismarck Public Schools! Both my wife and I are products of BPS, and our three boys are currently enrolled at the secondary level. I also serve on the South Central High School Community Advisory Committee, the Bismarck Community Bowl Task Force, Board of Directors for the Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC, volunteer with Young Life, and I love announcing high school sports!
WHAT IS YOUR TOP PRIORITY FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD? WHAT CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE?
The top priority in this next term will be focused on one main topic: growth. Our community continues to grow and our school district, of course, grows with it. The challenge arises to provide the space, teachers, and courses available our kids deserve. Our district and the families that make up Bismarck Public Schools will have to decide how we want to responsibly maintain or grow the budget to keep up with increased demands. Growth is also exciting and has created opportunities for our district’s educational and extra-curricular offerings to be wider and deeper than ever before. Some of the classes and programs being offered include: CTE (Career/Technical Education), EmpowerED, dual-credit/AP opportunities, Peer-to-Peer, and inclusive sports. I’m very proud of the work BPS has done to “Empower Every Learner to Thrive!”
TRAVIS JENSEN
Bismarck School Board
WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR SCHOOL BOARD AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THE POSITION?
While I believe that our current board has done some things well, there is always room for improvement and change. I am running to provide a differing perspective that I believe would be beneficial to not only the board but the community as a whole. I have two children that attend school in Bismarck, and I believe all stakeholders have a vested interest in ensuring our students and staff succeed to their highest abilities. We are all part of a team, and we are only as strong as our weakest link. We all need to work together to guarantee that every link is as strong as possible by building trust and relationships. I believe that I can help provide a voice to create and promote open communication for all to help both students and staff flourish and prosper.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP PRIORITY FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD? WHAT CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE?
Overall, the highest priority of any board member should be to ensure our students succeed, thrive, and have a solid foundation that will serve them well into their future. For that to happen, we need to retain and help our teachers succeed. To do that, we need to focus on both achievements and areas that need improvement. It can be challenging to do that if our teachers do not feel that they can come forward with issues. If elected, I want to create an environment where teachers and stakeholders, including parents, feel as though they are heard. I also want to promote more parent involvement, whether it’s through growing our programs such as Watch D.O.G.S. or creating more open communication between parents and schools. When all stakeholders are involved, it makes it easier to address concerns directly and with transparency. When our students and staff reach their full potential, our community will benefit well into the future.

WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR SCHOOL BOARD AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THE POSITION?
I am running for reelection because I am excited about the educational opportunities for BPS students. As I complete my first four-year term, I can see the important work that lies ahead, and I want to continue to be part of the progress. I am passionate about the kids and working to ensure they get the best educational experience that will provide my daughter and all students the skills and knowledge needed to develop into kind, bright, well-rounded adults. I am very proud of how the board has tackled some of the most challenging times in public education history with COVID. In addition, the experience of hiring a new superintendent, opening two new elementary schools and approving construction of two school additions, all to meet the needs of a growing community has positioned me with the experience needed to continue to serve Bismarck. School board decisions affect students, parents, staff, and the entire community.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP PRIORITY FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD? WHAT CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE?
My top priority is to address the needs of students, administration, and support staff while being fiscally responsible to Bismarck residents. I am fiscally conservative and believe we must address our needs while being good stewards of our taxpayers’ dollars. While serving on the BPS board, we have had a zero mill levy increase. The growth we see as a community and in student population is exciting, but it also poses challenges in terms of the budget, adequate space and attracting and retaining talented teachers and employees. I look forward to working strategically to address growth in a fiscally responsible way.

WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR SCHOOL BOARD AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THE POSITION?
I have served in a variety of public school roles: dean of students, instructional coach, English teacher, and, most recently, a Director at the Department of Public Instruction and current BPS school board member, appointed last March. Throughout these roles, I have strived to share my passion for learning, critical thinking skills, and best teaching and learning practices. Both my husband and I grew up in the BPS schools system and are the proud parents of three teenage boys who attend Wachter and BHS. I am confident that the breadth of experiences I’ve had will allow me to continue to be a strong public servant and a good steward of public money.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP PRIORITY FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD? WHAT CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE?
My top priority is being an advocate for students and educators to ensure they have a safe place to learn and thrive. I also know how important it is to hire, retain, and support quality educators from instructional aides to principals. An opportunity exists to enhance the connection between academic outcomes and safe and healthy schools. It is the task of a school board member to work together with the district to ensure it is meeting its academic goals, allocating resources responsibly, and engaging with its stakeholders. WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR SCHOOL BOARD AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THE POSITION?
I am running for another term on the Mandan School Board because I am committed to our children and this community. I have had the honor and pleasure of serving on the Mandan School Board for nearly 10 years. I have also been involved with the Finance and Facility Committee of the School District for over 16 years. My financial background is beneficial as the district faces the challenge of delivering quality educational opportunities with increasingly limited resources. Our three children have received a quality education and graduated from Mandan.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP PRIORITY FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD? WHAT CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE?
My top priority for the School Board to address is the growth in our district. The growth is both a challenge and a blessing. The board needs to monitor the enrollment projections and anticipate the district needs. Our community continues to grow, which will directly impact the Mandan School District. As we attempt to keep our classroom sizes small and create an environment that will allow for better learning, we need to have adequate space and well-staffed facilities. We must continue our efforts to attract and retain high quality teachers and school staff.

With nine years of experience as a board member and 10 years of experience as a school board policy and personnel committee member, I am running for re-election to the Mandan school board because of my desire to continue to serve the community. I’ve participated in nine years of board member development with the North Dakota School Boards Association. Recently, Mandan Public Schools joined with several local area schools in forming the Heart River Career & Technology Center; I represent Mandan and serve as president of that board. It’s an exciting endeavor to see how our schools can collaborate and bring more CTE experiences to students across our region. I’ve been working in higher education for 21 years and have seen the benefits of high-quality education and care for our students.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP PRIORITY FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD? WHAT CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE?

WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR SCHOOL BOARD AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THE POSITION?
My primary motivation for running for the school board stems from my role as a mother raising five children who are currently navigating their educational journeys across elementary, middle, and high school levels. This firsthand experience places me at the forefront of ongoing discussions and developments within the education system. Having a Doctorate in Physical Therapy gives me the understanding how health and wellness are strongly linked to academic success.
Mental health and physical wellness are concerns that continue to rise. Finding support and solutions to bring each individual back into balance to attain their greatest potential needs to be a focal point. I recognize the importance of advocating not only for youth but also for parents and educators alike. We can create a more inclusive and supportive educational environment that nurtures the holistic development of our community’s young minds.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP PRIORITY FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD? WHAT CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE?
My top priority is getting back to the fundamentals of our curriculum while also adapting to the ever-evolving landscape of technology. It’s important that we provide our students with the necessary skills to thrive beyond the confines of the classroom, while instilling safe and responsible practices for navigating the rapidly changing world around them. Central to this mission is fostering teamwork that encourages parental engagement. By working hand in hand with parents, we can develop effective strategies both within and outside of school to ensure the safety and well-being of our students while staying ahead of emerging challenges. I believe in the importance of integrating fundamental knowledge about nutrition across all levels of education. By going beyond mere convenience and encouraging a deeper understanding of nutritional elements, we can pave the way for a healthier future and unlock opportunities for natural wellness among our student body.
WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR SCHOOL BOARD AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THE POSITION?
As a mother of three grown men that graduated from Mandan High, I have experienced life with them through that process and now have more time to serve the community by being a part of the board. Currently, as a small business owner, a member of the State Board of Cosmetology since 2017, a member of the Professional Beauty Associations Advisory Board, a member of the Concerned Beauty and Barber Professionals, and the international Chairwomen for the Country Gospel Ministries, I believe I’m well qualified to be a member of the Mandan School Board.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP PRIORITY FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD? WHAT CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE?
My top priority would be to provide students with the learning experiences that will help them cultivate their skills to be productive citizen so they can be ready for the path that best fits them at the time they leave our educational care. WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR SCHOOL BOARD AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THE POSITION?
I have been on the Mandan Public School Board since 2013 and currently serve as the president and also serve on the facility and finance subcommittee. During my time on the board, we have worked to address the needs of the students, administration and support staff while being fiscally responsible to the residents of the school district. I wish to continue using my education, skills, and abilities to address those needs.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP PRIORITY FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD? WHAT CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE?
The top priority is finish up our building projects needed to provide the space to educate our students, maintain a very talented workforce of teachers, administrators, and support staff while being fiscally responsible to the citizens paying taxes. The challenges I see laying ahead are ensuring that we maintain a talented workforce, while adapting to meet the ever-changing learning needs of students in the 21st century. The opportunities include a great staff who rise to the occasion and meet those needs. Mandan residents are very supportive, and I plan to continue to work with the board, educators, staff, and the residents to provide the educational needs of our students.
WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR SCHOOL BOARD AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THE POSITION?
I have been on the school board for 16 of the last 17 years and served as president of the board for over half that time. I decided to step down in 2022, but when a vacancy opened up last year, I saw an opportunity to rejoin a team that I believe has been instrumental in making a positive difference in our community. Being back on the board for the past year has made me realize that I still enjoy serving the community in this capacity. I believe my experience and leadership will help the board continue to create an environment that provides exceptional educational opportunities for our students, allows the district to attract and retain high-quality staff, and positions us for the future, all while being fiscally responsible to our community.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP PRIORITY FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD? WHAT CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE?
I don’t have a top priority, per se. I see safety, educational growth, and response to population changes as issues facing Mandan public schools. The biggest challenge moving forward will be financial. The community doesn’t have unlimited funds, so we need to be smart and continue to find ways to spend each dollar for greatest impact. Our greatest source of opportunity can be found inside our schools. Mandan has a top-tier team of administrators, educators, and support staff who have a proven track record of finding innovative solutions to challenging issues. The board simply needs to provide the necessary framework and infrastructure to allow them to continue to flourish.

WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR SCHOOL BOARD AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THE POSITION?
I am running for Mandan school board because as a father of three, I like to be involved. This also gives me a vested interest. I believe our children come first, and what better way to advocate for them than being on the school board? Being a union assistant steward/steward at my job for 10 plus years, I feel qualified in the aspect of the teachers union and their importance/role in our children’s lives as well.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP PRIORITY FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD? WHAT CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE?
My top priority for the school board is to work together as a team to accomplish the best outcomes for our children and teachers alike. Happy teachers make happy students. I also want to be sure parents feel heard.
I see many opportunities when it comes to being on the school board. Growing up in Mandan Public Schools in K-12, I feel I know what works for our community, what people’s interests are when it comes to our children’s successes, and the value of our “small town” feel, yet ever growing city.
WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR SCHOOL BOARD AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THE POSITION?
I am throwing my name into the race for Mandan School Board because the traditional values that our small community established years ago are being lost in our schools. We need more board members who are willing to step up and listen to the needs and concerns of our students and staff and take a common-sense approach when making decisions that affect the entire community.
As a mother, I care about what’s going on in our schools. After all, our schools spend as much time, if not more, with our kids than most working parents. I believe in a bottomup approach, where decisions are shaped by the voices of our community, not just dictated from the top down. I’m just a regular, full-time working mom with common sense on a mission to listen to the challenges of students and staff, bring back traditional values, and represent the parents in our community.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP PRIORITY FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD? WHAT CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE?
My top priority for the school board is ensuring the safety and support of both teachers and students in the classroom. This includes providing teachers with necessary resources and training, addressing mental health and behavioral challenges among students, and ensuring appropriate reading materials. Additionally, staff retention and responsible budget management are crucial areas to focus on.

WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR SCHOOL BOARD AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THE POSITION?
“Every Student Matters, Every Moment Counts.” I am a lifelong resident of the Mandan Community an extension for the people for the City of Mandan. I have developed a deep and true-understanding of the needs for our students, teachers, and educators. Every child in our Mandan Public School District is important and every minute in school is just as important. Our students’ future is the education in the classroom. I also represent the city in serving on a number of boards and committees. I currently serve as VicePresident of the Mandan Architectural Review Commission, Mandan Planning and Zoning (which I served Vice-Chair for two terms), Cemetery Advisory Committee and Code Enforcement Appeals Board. I am a member of the North Dakota Planning Association, the Western Central Chapter, and a member of the American Planning Association.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP PRIORITY FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD? WHAT CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE?
My top priority for the school board is to help further more Career Technical Education Programs. Our community is growing. With growth, comes opportunities as well as challenges which directly impacts the Mandan Public School District. With school budgeting, students K-12 along with teachers can learn and teach one another have the on-hand experiences and at the same time it is a valuable resource tool that helps students and teachers when entering the workforce. I am a supporter of this. My concern that I see as a national trend is school supplies and school lunches. Parents are struggling to afford school supplies for their children. Inflation has driven up the prices of consumer goods. When this happens, it disrupts the learning process. Again, inflation is playing a key role on school lunches. Parents of school children are struggling to earn just enough to keep up with their basic living costs. When this happens, parents blame themselves and children feel shamed. What I would like to see is a reassessment of the National School Lunch Program. We must continue our efforts to help families with children in the school district. With a focus on creating connections in the tight-knit school communities, we need to establish more opportunities and to better the needs for the parents and children in the school district.

WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR PARK BOARD AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THE POSITION?
In short, this is a community I love, and our parks enhance and enrich the lives of those that call Bismarck home. The decisions made by the Bismarck Parks & Rec District need to balance user goals with accountability – my background has prepared me for these conversations. I have over 34 years of experience serving on or with boards in leadership roles at the local, state, and national levels, where I have consistently earned trust in my ability to serve effectively. I intend to use my decades of experience to further this effort to keep Bismarck thriving and a great place to reside. I want to engage in the work and continue the momentum that the Bismarck Park Board has begun. People and thriving communities need excellent places to live, work, and play — our park system is key to that and should be supported. I am ready to serve the role.
HOW WILL YOU BALANCE THE INCREASING DEMAND TO DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN FACILITIES WHILE ENSURING FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY?
Throughout my career, I have been responsible for developing and administering organizational and operational budgets. From my experience, effective leaders must identify the priorities of those benefiting from these facilities and programs. They should make thoughtful decisions based on this understanding. I will rely on citizen input to understand the needs and gaps, while aiming to understand the various impacts these have on overall parks district. As a user, I know our parks cater to diverse audiences — decisions regarding growth or maintenance should be made with a focus on serving our citizens optimally while also being responsible stewards of taxpayers’ dollars.
Bismarck Park Board
WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR PARK BOARD AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THE POSITION?
I’m running for the park board because my passion is creating and supporting great communities. Over my 15 years of extensive experience in the private sector as a Chief Operating Officer and President in Downtown Development, Bismarck has seen a turnaround in Downtown property values, jobs, businesses, livability, and housing. I’m currently the assistant coach for Legacy Girls Golf, Board Member of Dakota Junior Golf Association, member of the North Dakota Opportunity Fund Loan Board and many other initiatives throughout the city and region.
HOW WILL YOU BALANCE THE INCREASING DEMAND TO DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN FACILITIES WHILE ENSURING FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY?
My background is building private-public partnerships for the benefit of our community. As I’ve been campaigning, the biggest feedback I’ve heard from user groups is that Bismarck needs more indoor training space for our growing community. I believe that the park district could achieve this by creating a more engaging and competitive bidding process. Over the past year, some parks projects have only had one or two bidders. To make sure taxpayers are getting the biggest bang for our buck, we should work on getting more competitive pricing by engaging the experience of the private sector and user groups to keep growing our park district through partnerships. This will help us execute strategic growth in a timely manner and on budget.

WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR PARK BOARD AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THE POSITION?
My husband, our children, and I are avid users of our park district’s programs and facilities, and we recognize how they contribute to the quality of life and well-being within our community. Our leisure time at the parks, playgrounds, and trails, and my kids’ growing list of activities (which so far includes soccer, hockey, swimming, tennis, golf, ballet, gymnastics, and BLAST/Activity Center) give me first-hand perspective to advocate for several user groups. I’ve spent my entire career working in public service at the local, state, and military levels, and as the incumbent candidate, I bring operational understanding, insight, and leadership experience to the table.
HOW WILL YOU BALANCE THE INCREASING DEMAND TO DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN FACILITIES WHILE ENSURING FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY?
Our board and full-time staff work diligently to conduct regular outreach and gauge the needs within our community. We aim to prioritize needs through our annual strategic planning process, and we develop our budget accordingly. To reduce the burden on taxpayers as we make necessary enhancements, it is critically important to continue leveraging the outstanding public/ private partnerships within our community and identify other opportunities for funding, such as grants. These are strategies that have effectively helped us advance initiatives while we continue to maintain (or reduce) our mills.
WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR PARK BOARD AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THE POSITION?
My three pillars for running are purpose, passion, and people. Dedication to community service, passion for public parks and recreation and the joy I find in working with others to positively impact people are the driving forces for my candidacy. My 17 years in management at Bismarck Parks and Recreation (BPRD), team-centered nature, listening skills and experience in board leadership provide a strong foundation to be an engaged and contributing board member. I’m ready to get to work.
HOW WILL YOU BALANCE THE INCREASING DEMAND TO DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN FACILITIES WHILE ENSURING FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY?
The role of the Park Board is to develop and set operational and fiscal policy. I’m grateful for my background in working with a team to foster an integrated, comprehensive approach to delivering public park and recreation services. Identifying community needs, cultivating key partnerships, creating a plan, and determining financial viability are part of that process.
I’ve been intimately involved with several successful community capital campaign teams for the purchase, enhancement or improvement of BPRD facilities and parks. Public/private partnerships have been instrumental in the success of these projects. I have experience in working with the BPRD team and the Board in developing the Strategic Plan. The Plan is reviewed and updated annually. It sets priorities and is the roadmap that guides the annual budgeting process. BPRD has an excellent financial history, presenting balanced budgets while working hard to meet the needs of an ever-growing, always vibrant Bismarck.

I am running for Mandan Park Board to continue serving Mandan residents and keep providing for their recreational needs. In serving another term, I look forward to improving our trails and playgrounds. Mandan keeps growing so we need to keep investing in our current programs and facilities.
HOW WILL YOU BALANCE THE INCREASING DEMAND TO DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN FACILITIES WHILE ENSURING FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY?
The Mandan Park Board has been able to create and maintain facilities that are of high quality to serve the Mandan residents as well as bringing in and hosting events. With that it brings in increased revenue to businesses and sales tax dollars to our city. This all happens with our partnerships with our user groups with their willingness to build and improve our city's infrastructure which in turns keeps taxes manageable and reduce overall debt.
I look forward to another term to create and improve our facilities that will serve Mandan residents.

WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR PARK BOARD AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THE POSITION?
I am running for Mandan Park Board in hopes to continue serving Mandan residents and providing for their recreational needs. The past term has brought many challenges, but improvements to our city. By serving another term, I will look to improve our already great park district by maintaining/investing in our current programs and facilities, yet also look to find other ways to fill Mandan’s growing necessities. I believe serving the last four years has given me a wider perspective of all programs, trails, and facilities and how they all work together to provide for our citizens. New challenges will continue to arise with the growth of our city and how to plan for future expansion.
HOW WILL YOU BALANCE THE INCREASING DEMAND TO DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN FACILITIES WHILE ENSURING FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY?
The Mandan Park Board has been able to create and maintain facilities that are of high quality and serve Mandan residents well, but they are also designed to bring in nonMandan residents by the events they host. These events have brought increased revenue to businesses and sales tax dollars to our city. This is largely due to our relationship with progressive user groups and their willingness to build and improve our city’s infrastructure. These partnerships have made it possible keep taxes manageable, reduce overall debt, and target our non-revenue entities within our general budget. I will continue to look for ways to create and improve facilities that will serve Mandan citizens.

WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR BISMARCK MUNICIPAL JUDGE?
To continue and improve upon the great work Judge Severin has done. His view of sentencing and holding defendants accountable protects our community. Our law enforcement are getting more disheartened with light sentences or inmates being released early from jail when a person is guilty, so the community needs someone willing to do that hard work but also be fair.
WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THE POSITION?
I have over 25 years of legal experience and have demonstrated moving the legal department to better functions and output while leveraging technology to integrate with other departments. I have taken classes on court administration when I worked at the ND Supreme Court and have extensive experience in city prosecution in several cities. I can continue the work of the court while increasing technology use, improve efficiencies in process without adding staff and can do so very quickly once elected with the great staff at Court now. I am very ethical, so I will listen to all sides before determining if someone is guilty or not guilty. I will continue the commonsense sentencing that holds people accountable and recognizes how sentencing affects our community safety, police retention and rehabilitation of those found guilty.
WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR BISMARCK MUNICIPAL JUDGE?
I decided to run so Bismarck residents could have a choice for municipal judge on June 11. Although filling the shoes of retiring Judge Severin is a daunting task for Bismarck, I am eager for this opportunity to serve the people of our city. As a resident of Bismarck for nearly two decades, I have seen my fair share of city elections, and I think the most important factor to any election is a variety of quality candidates. Running for municipal judge is a tremendous opportunity to give back to our community, as Bismarck has done so many great things for me and my family.
WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THE POSITION?
My experience and skills as an attorney, mediator, and small business owner, combined with my commitment to serving Bismarck, has prepared me well for this role. I will be a balanced judge: fair, firm, compassionate, with common sense. I am dedicated to applying these principles to ensure justice for all residents of Bismarck. I currently serve our community in various roles: public interest boards, committees, and as a long-time foster parent. I look forward to serving as Bismarck municipal judge and will strive to positively impact our future and community.

WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR MAYOR AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THE POSITION?
Lincoln needs a mayor who will address and plan for infrastructure challenges, a mayor that recognizes all of the things that make our community great, and a mayor that will not forget about the people who have lived here for a long time and feel like they have lost their voice.
WHAT ARE THE TOP THREE ISSUES THE CITY COMMISSION SHOULD ADDRESS IN THE NEXT FOUR YEARS?
The top three issues council should address, after a designated ZIP Code, would be economic development, reducing budgets, and improving local infrastructure.
WHAT IS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT OPPORTUNITY FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN LINCOLN AND HOW SHOULD IT BE ADDRESSED?
Lincoln has a rare opportunity and that is industrial and commercial real estate availability. As we continue to grow as a city, the businesses will follow. Citizens need affordable housing, daycare, and the safety of smalltown living.
IDENTIFY ONE AREA WHERE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE IMPROVEMENT FROM CITY GOVERNMENT. I would like to see more pride in working together. Servant leadership is an honor and so many times we see increasing divisiveness and eroding civility.

WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR CITY COMMISSION AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THIS POSITION?
I am running for this office out of a sense of civic duty. Lincoln is wonderful small town that is quiet, safe, and affordable. I owned a small business in Lincoln for just under 10 years and have held leadership, supervisory, and management positions for over 20 years. I currently serve as the Vice President of the board of directors of Heavens Helpers Soup Cafe. My husband and I also founded a nonprofit Christian organization that among other things, has enabled several small businesses to be raised in difficult economic conditions. I currently work in communications and marketing and look forward to an opportunity to serve my community.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP PRIORITY FOR THE CITY COMMISSION TO ADDRESS IN THE NEXT FOUR YEARS?
Critical infrastructure is high on the list of priorities, specifically to finish projects that have begun because costs continue to rise. I will look to assist efforts for affordable housing and new business opportunities in Lincoln. Transparency, accountability, and communication are all top priorities.
WHAT IS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT OPPORTUNITY FOR THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY OF LINCOLN AND HOW SHOULD IT BE ADDRESSED?
Lincoln is open to new business ideas and opportunities. We work together with our Economic Development Committee and the Chamber EDC to help encourage existing and new businesses with tax incentives and possible grant opportunities. There are currently wonderful opportunities to purchase or lease properties for businesses in Lincoln.

WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR CITY COMMISSION AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THIS POSITION?
I am running because I love our community and want to do what I can to help it thrive. I believe my experiences ranging from being a server in a small town cafe to managing a business with multiple employees allows me to look at things with a wide perspective and see things from multiple angles.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP PRIORITY FOR THE CITY COMMISSION TO ADDRESS IN THE NEXT FOUR YEARS?
I would like to put some focus on truly listening to the residents. I believe there are many in our community who would like to see improvements in different areas and would like to express that and truly be heard. Not just have their concerns put in a pile on the end of a desk. I think that there are many times when someone voices a concern that their words fall on deaf ears, and I would like to change that.
WHAT IS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT OPPORTUNITY FOR THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY OF LINCOLN AND HOW SHOULD IT BE ADDRESSED?
Just like Bismarck, Lincoln is continuing to expand and grow. There are currently store fronts available in strip malls right off of Lincoln Road with great visibility. Land along 66th Street, another major road through Lincoln, also had great potential to be developed into prime commercial and industrial properties. Lincoln has the opportunity to work with developers to expand the business community and the growing population should be very enticing for businesses that want to come to the area.

WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR CITY COMMISSION AND WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THIS POSITION?
To help the City of Lincoln make its citizens top priority again. We need to be fiscally conservative and allocate taxpayers’ funds for projects that benefit the citizens and not independent developers.
My career is in agriculture, and I have served on the American Feed Industry Association’s Board of Directors, have held numerous 3-year terms on the AFIA’s liquid feed committee, and chaired an Annual National meeting for Supplement Manufactures. I have managed a cattle supplement manufacturing business for 11 years and owned that business for three years. I know how to manage and operate in a very efficient and effective manner which includes productive communication and cutting cost where possible.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP PRIORITY FOR THE CITY COMMISSION TO ADDRESS IN THE NEXT FOUR YEARS?
• Spending — In order to cut taxes, we need to cut spending. I want taxpayer funds prioritized to city infrastructure, public works, and community development, in that order.
• Business Development – We need to focus on what businesses and developments will grow Lincoln in the long-term and not how many more people we can get in our territory to increase property tax revenue.
WHAT IS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT OPPORTUNITY FOR THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY OF LINCOLN AND HOW SHOULD IT BE ADDRESSED?
Location. A starting business in Lincoln that appeals to the entire community would thrive. I am a Lincoln resident, and if there was a hardware store or grocery store in Lincoln, I would not drive to Bismarck. I would like to see Lincoln support the growth and introduction of businesses that create jobs and goods/services. And as we grow, we need to keep compliant with our city ordinances.

I am running for the Lincoln Park District as there are still many park projects within existing parks and new parks to bring online that I want to see through to completion as a returning park board member. The qualities I bring to the position include the following: 1) experience — I have been a park board member for over 20 years; 2) continuity — I helped formulate the last park master plan and the projects therein; 3) knowledge — I am an audit director for the North Dakota State Auditor’s Office & have spent many years working with local governments like park districts.
HOW WILL YOU BALANCE THE INCREASING DEMAND TO DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN FACILITIES WHILE ENSURING FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY?
The primary way to balance the demand of park facilities as well recreational activities is through the development of an updated park master plan which we will be conducting soon with the City of Lincoln. Fiscal responsibility is in my DNA as I am a CPA and one of my many responsibilities at the N.D. State Auditor’s Office is to help local governments become and stay fiscally responsible. ELECTRO WATCHMAN, INC.
Tell us about yourself and your role within your business.
A: My name is Rachelle Johnson, and I am the Regional Manager of Electro Watchman, Inc. located in Mandan, ND. I am originally from the Bismarck area. I have been with Electro Watchman, Inc. for 11 years.
Briefly tell us the history behind Electro Watchman, Inc. and how you got started.
A: Electro Watchman, Inc., as a corporation, has been in business since 1921. It was founded in St. Paul, MN where the corporate office is still located. There are now four offices, St. Paul, MN, Fargo, ND, Sioux Falls, SD and Bismarck/Mandan, ND. We have been in the Bis/Man area since the 1980’s. I got started by bringing on Electro Watchman, Inc. as a client from a previous employer. I had done some recruiting for them. The following year they were looking for a Regional Manager and I told the Vice President of the company, I could do the job, and I was hired. It was not that simple, but essentially that is how it worked out.

How has the growth of Bismarck-Mandan impacted Electro Watchman, Inc.?
A: We have seen an abundance of transformation in our industry from the growth of Bismarck-Mandan in commercial and residential construction. With the growing population and infrastructure, brought a higher need for security to protect property.
What trends are taking place in your industry?
A: Security trends have seen all kinds of changes, especially when Covid 19 hit. The industry manufacturers began creating products to keep businesses as safe and secure as possible with extraordinarily little hands on, such as touchless door entry systems.
In the era of AI, or artificial intelligence, we have seen cameras detect and search out some pretty amazing things for our consumers.
Have there been any monumental changes within your industry that you’ve had to deal with?
A: Amid COVID-19 and the year following, we experienced a lot of manufacturers not having enough products to fill our demand. It is tough explaining why it would take six months or more for any particular product to be shipped to us and then installed in their facilities to keep them safe.
What does the future Electro Watchman, Inc. look like and the industry as a whole look like to you?
A: The future of the security industry, and Electro Watchman, Inc. will continue to change and grow immensely as technology advances and demands a secure environment.
Electro Watchman, Inc. became a Chamber EDC member in 2006, why do you continue to renew?
A: We continue to renew our Chamber EDC membership to maintain and grow our relationships with the existing Bismarck-Mandan community members and for the new members and businesses the Chamber EDC recruits so well.
What should other Chamber EDC members know about Electro Watchman, Inc. that may assist them?
A: Electro Watchman, Inc. is a family-owned business and has been in business for over 100 years. We continue to grow in areas where demand is greatest, and we maintain relationships within our local community.

SECOND CHANCE MONTH
The month of April was designated as a time to highlight and celebrate those previously incarcerated within the North Dakota Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation who have rejoined the workforce. Stories included Sara who is now a full-time employee for a heating and plumbing company and Dale who is now a full-time staff member at Little Cottage Café.
Successful re-entry of incarcerated persons is important not only to the individual’s wellbeing but also our community’s. On average 1,316 are released to re-enter the workforce of North Dakota each year. By helping to fill these jobs, second chance citizens are enabling businesses to succeed and adding to the local economy. To learn more about re-entry programs, connect with Nate Mickelson at nathan@ministryonthemargins.org

NEW BISMARCK RESEARCH PROJECT MAKES SKY RANGE A STATEWIDE INITIATIVE
As part of his military tour of North Dakota, U.S. Senator John Hoeven today, along with Bismarck State College (BSC) President Dr. Douglas Jensen and leaders from BlueHalo, announced funding for a new research project that will support hypersonic missile testing and create opportunities for students to train for high-tech defense industry jobs in the state. As a member of the Senate Defense Appropriations Committee, Hoeven secured $8.3 million to fund the Space-based Telemetry Phased Array Antenna Systems (STAPS) project, which supports a new partnership between BSC and BlueHalo and develops technology to enhance the Test Resource Management Center’s (TRMC) Sky Range program at Grand Sky. This comes as part of the more than $100 million that Hoeven included for defense research and development across North Dakota in the fiscal year (FY) 2024 funding bills.
• Under the STAPS or the Space-based Telemetry using All-digital Phased Array Antenna System Project, BlueHalo will use the $8.3 million:
• For research and development of digital phased arrays for satellites to support Sky Range’s hypersonic missile testing, building on BlueHalo’s PANTHER phased array antenna carried on the Range Hawk.
• To train students for new careers, in partnership with BSC and local businesses, at a space engineering and manufacturing hub in Bismarck, including a college-to-career pipeline.
• The project aligns with the senator’s broader efforts to secure full funding for TRMC and the Space Development Agency to execute their missions at Grand Forks and keep it the tip of the spear for space and hypersonic missions.
“This $8.3 million lays the foundation for a new partnership, benefiting students and businesses in Bismarck, while enhancing the Sky Range mission in Grand Forks. But more than that, this is about the future of our nation’s defense, staying ahead of our adversaries and North Dakota’s growing role in such essential missions,” said Senator Hoeven. “Sky Range provides a more efficient and effective way to test hypersonic weapons, which are currently tested using ships at sea, an expensive, slow and insecure method. Now, Bismarck gets to be an important part of this initiative, providing both technology development as BlueHalo adapts its phased array antenna for satellites as well as the workforce needed for our state’s dynamic, high-tech defense industry.”
“The partnership announced today marks the beginning of an entire defense technology ecosystem we are building with Bismarck State College in central North Dakota and continues BlueHalo’s work to develop generationally important technologies in support of the mission,” said James Batt, BlueHalo Chief Growth Officer. “The technological advancements we will make, the workforce we will train, and the opportunities this will provide are only possible because of the support we have received from North Dakota leaders, like Dr. Jensen and Sen. Hoeven, who understand the importance of delivering critical technologies to address the most urgent national security priorities. We are excited to see what we will accomplish together.”
“When we embarked on our journey to add an 88,000-square-foot Polytechnic Advanced Technology Center to the Bismarck State College campus, we envisioned a strong industry partnership to help our students develop the real-world experience and skills needed to excel in today’s workforce,” said Dr. Jensen. “We appreciate Senator Hoeven’s work to lay the foundation for this partnership with BlueHalo. Together, we are committed to developing a focused curriculum, providing students with hands-on learning experiences, and propelling graduates to successful defense technology careers in our community.”

Q: HOW CAN MY BUSINESS START BUILDING A POSITIVE REPUTATION ONLINE?
A: With 98% of people reading online reviews for local businesses (BrightLocal), having a positive reputation is more important than ever. Start building your online reputation by encouraging your current customers to leave reviews on platforms like Google. How? Incorporate a clear call to action in your marketing or daily conversations, asking them for a review while their experience is fresh in their mind. And when those reviews roll in, don't leave them hanging! Respond promptly, be courteous, and show them you value their feedback.
But don’t stop there - keeping an eye on your online presence is crucial. If you spot any negative reviews, address them openly and with a commitment to resolving issues. By prioritizing customer satisfaction and staying on top of your online reputation, you'll not only attract new customers but also earn their trust.

Q: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN OPTION, A RIGHT OF FIRST REFUSAL AND A RIGHT OF FIRST OFFER?
A: When purchasing or leasing property it may be necessary or desirable to plan for eventually acquiring more property or space. There are three different means to help achieve the goal of acquiring more property or space: an option, right of first refusal or right of first offer.
An option is a right granted by an owner to a purchaser or tenant to unilaterally decide if, and when, the purchaser or tenant will acquire land or space by giving the owner notice.
A right of first refusal is the right to match an offer the owner receives from a third party. Alternatively, a right of first offer, as the name suggests, is when an owner grants a purchaser or third party the right to make the first offer to purchase or lease if the owner wants to market or sell the property. It is often coupled with an exclusive negotiating window for a set period of time.
All three of these rights are different and have subtle nuances that could make one a better option than the others, depending on your situation. Discussing your needs with an experienced attorney can help you understand which option is right for you.

A: To lower your risk of getting skin cancer, you can protect your skin from UV rays from the sun and avoid artificial sources of UV exposure such as tanning beds. Overall risk increases if you have a family or personal history of skin cancer. Some good general tips to know about sun safety are:
1. Choose Broad-Spectrum SPF: Opt for a sunscreen labeled "broad-spectrum" to shield against UVA and UVB rays, reducing the risk of sun damage and skin cancer. Be sure to check your sunscreen’s expiration date. Your sunscreen’s shelf life is shorter if it has been exposed to high temperatures so be sure to store it in a cool, dry place.
2. Apply and Reapply: Generously apply sunscreen to all exposed skin, and remember to reapply every two hours, especially if swimming or sweating.
3. Seek Shade and wear Protection: Stay in the shade when possible and wear sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and lightweight clothing for added protection.
4. Avoid Tanning Beds: Skip indoor tanning beds—they emit harmful UV radiation, increasing the risk of skin damage and cancer.

Q: DOES YOUR BUSINESS NEED ITS OWN PHONE NUMBER AND SYSTEM?
A: If you are still using your personal cell phone number as your business number, it's time to update. Even as a busy business owner or manager separating work and home is important especially as your business grows or you add in employees. Easy custom solutions like BeMobile Verizon's One Talk system can create a great customer experience while also freeing up your space. A dedicated phone system like ours is able to have an auto-receptionist to help phone tree out who to connect them to, a group router to find who is available to take a call, and a shared app so all messages and details can be shared in one place all with the ease of use that a national network can provide. Upgrade your business communication with a dedicated system like One Talk.
