s we enter the busy summer season, the Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC is focusing on the future of our business community and continued improvement in the organization. We recently: conducted our second annual member survey, initiated a review of our building needs and opportunities, and kicked off our comprehensive economic development strategic planning process. Surveying our membership helps focus our board and staff on areas of strength and areas of opportunity, and a few key points stood out: • • •
85% of respondents rated our communications as effective 82% said there were no “gaps” in our programming AND 84% were confident in the value of their investment
For an organization like ours, these are exceptionally positive results. We’re taking the feedback provided and using it to strengthen and enhance both our most successful and our most challenging topics. Deeper in the survey 73% of responses identified “time” as the greatest barrier to more engagement, not the quality, type, or focus of our efforts, but the reality of today’s business and family worlds. Additionally, the greatest value provided by the BMCEDC as ranked by respondents were: Economic Development, Networking, and Advocacy. These three are diverse missions and the membership recognizes the value and importance of each of them. As we carry out these missions, our office space is crowded as a result of the merger in 2019 and our own organic growth. After a formal RFQ process, we have engaged an architect to assess the best way forward in our existing space. Changes in the breadth of our mission and the scope of the BMCEDC have changed our needs, and you will see evolving plans for how to best maximize usage and efficiency of our building. Finally, our Economic Development Strategic Planning process recently kicked off with consultants from the Next Move Group meeting with a broad group of stakeholders to gather perspectives and explore opportunities. This process will continue over the coming months and culminate in a plan that will undoubtedly challenge us to implement new programs, overcome obstacles, and drive the future success of Bismarck-Mandan. This is truly a pivotal moment for our organization and our community, and the most impactful project since the BMDA/Chamber merger. Margaret Mead said “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world: indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” Stay engaged and join in the journey, the BMCEDC membership is that small group that is changing our world. Thanks to each of you for your membership and commitment.

RENOVATIONS AND INCENTIVES REVITALIZING DOWNTOWN MANDAN By Mary Cole, Clearwater Communications The heart of Mandan is undergoing a boom of new developments. Thanks to private and public investments, city incentives and recent renovations, downtown Mandan is becoming a thriving area and exciting place to learn, work, and relax. Improvements to the Morton Mandan Public Library and Dykshoorn Park, along with construction of the Legacy Law Firm Building, are breathing new life and activity into the community’s downtown, with the sights of city officials and business owners set on continuing to foster future growth.
MORTON MANDAN PUBLIC LIBRARY
The center of much of the downtown renovation is the construction in progress at the Morton Mandan Public Library (MMPL). The renovations were first kicked off by the Energy Transfer Company approaching the City of Mandan, asking how best to give back to the community. Together, company and city officials decided the library needed renovation and expansion to better meet the community’s needs. “The mission of MMPL is to build an inclusive community of lifelong learners; where citizens are encouraged to ‘learn out loud’ by doing,” said Barb Sandstrom, MMPL Director. “Our city and county communities are expanding, and now is the time to focus on their future.” The library’s new 8,000-square-foot addition and building renovations will help the MMPL’s space become even more effective as a library and further its mission, Sandstrom noted. New ramps have been added to make the library more accessible and inclusive, and conference rooms and a building redesign will greatly increase the capacity for hands-on activity spaces. The renovations will also help to integrate the library with its surroundings, including the adjacent Dykshoorn Park. The library’s new rooms will feature sliding glass doors opening to patios in the park, a great place to enjoy evening music, said Jim Neubauer, Mandan City Administrator.
4 4 Connection
Observation decks on the east side of the library will also give guests a place to view parades and other events outside from a great vantage point. “It is our hope the renovations will attract new interest and new patrons throughout Mandan and Morton County by showing them, in unique ways, all that we offer, from free and accessible resources to programming and events to increased meeting rooms and public spaces to the bookmobile and passport/notary services,” Sandstrom said.

DYKSHOORN PARK
Next to the library, Dkyshoorn Park is also getting a new look thanks to the same donation from the Energy Transfer Company. “The park was always beautiful, but it just needed a refresh,” Neubauer said. He noted every new element at the park is geared toward increased engagement with the community and surrounding area. “We’re trying to engage people with the park, so they don’t just drive by, they also stop and walk through the park, and in turn, engage in the businesses along Main Street,” Neubauer said. “Let’s get people involved!” Renovations to the park will make it an ideal place to host events, such as beer gardens or the annual Art in the Park, he noted. New walkways will encourage visitors to wander through the park, while permanent speaker systems, new fencing, and other equipment additions will facilitate future events. Neubauer noted some trees had to be removed during the project because of safety concerns due to Dutch Elm Disease. “Believe me, we are the last ones who want to cut down trees,” he said, noting new sun shades added by the band shell will help replenish the shade lost from tree cover.
LEGACY LAW FIRM BUILDING
“The new Legacy Law Firm building was constructed on an empty lot on Mandan’s Main Street, which has always been vacant,” said Dan Anderson, Partner at Legacy Law Firm, noting the move to the new downtown space will have several benefits for the firm. The building’s new location on Main Street is within the city’s Renaissance Zone, an area in which new buildings or improvements may qualify for property and state income tax exemptions for up to five years. Legacy Law Firm is one of many establishments to take advantage of this incentive, aimed at breathing new life into downtown Mandan through new and remodeled businesses. The law firm also qualifies for the Partners in Community Expansion (PACE) program, a partnership between local financial institutions and the Bark of North Dakota to provide reduced-interest loans to downtown businesses. Besides the city’s incentives, moving to downtown gives the law firm a central location, says Anderson. Legacy Law Firm aimed for moving to Main Street to capitalize on the area’s increased activity, he noted, adding the location places the firm within a thriving group of businesses. “I am looking forward to being part of the local downtown community.”
Fire pits and new lighting elements in the park will give groups a place to gather and relax, while a new play package and outdoor musical instruments will also give kids a downtown space to play.

FOSTERING COMMUNITY
The end goal of the city’s incentives and renovations is to foster growth in the community, said Ellen Huber, Business Development and Communications Director for the City of Mandan. “Mandan is committed to fostering a vibrant Main Street, downtown, and community as a whole,” she noted. In addition to the Renaissance Zone and PACE programs available to downtown businesses, the Storefront Improvement Program funds makeovers to the exterior, street-facing sides of buildings through matching funds in the form of forgivable loans. Another helpful opportunity is the Retail Incentive Program, targeted at businesses that fill gaps in the community’s available products and services. “There is excitement in the air around Mandan,” said Sandstrom of the community’s improvement and attraction efforts for both businesses and visitors. Q&A WITH MANDAN PROGRESS ORGANIZATION By Cathryn Sprynczynatyk Matt Schanandore might be new to the Mandan Progress Organization, but he’s not new to Mandan or running successful events. Schanandore became Executive Director of the MPO in January, but he is a lifelong Mandan resident with extensive experience hosting popular events. Connection Magazine sat down with Schanandore to talk about his love of history, creating experiences, and the economic impact of events in Mandan.
CONNECTION MAGAZINE: HOW DID YOUR CAREER PATH LEAD YOU TO THE MPO?
MATT SCHANANDORE: I studied landscape and architectural design at North Dakota State University. Then, I moved home (to Mandan) and worked with the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial signature event at University of Mary in 2004. That event changed my career path... The 2004 Lewis and Clark Bicentennial was a milestone event in U.S. history. I’ve always had a love for history. I didn’t feel like I could turn away from it. I’m an enrolled member with the Three Affiliated Tribes. My grandmother would tell stories about Lewis and Clark and the history of the Mandan people. That’s part of what drew me to it... From there I moved to the Fort Abraham Lincoln Foundation partnering with North Dakota State Parks... When the foundation purchased the Lewis and Clark Riverboat in 2008, that got me really interested in heritage tours, working with the hospitality industry, tourism, and creating unique experiences for people who were visiting and living in Bismarck-Mandan.
CM: I UNDERSTAND YOU’RE A MANDAN KID. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO PUT DOWN ROOTS HERE IN MANDAN?
MS: I just ended up here. It wasn’t really a choice, but I’ve always liked Mandan. After college, I got a job, was working, had a family. You’re unaware of the transitions, and you’re making these decisions. But even from a young age, I’ve always had a love for Mandan and the BismarckMandan community. It’s a great community with a smalltown atmosphere. We have a lot of amenities that make living here enjoyable.
8 4 Connection
CM: WHAT DREW YOU TO THE MPO?
MS: I’ve always liked the events. As long as, I can remember as a child we came down to the Fourth of July parade. Now, I’m bringing my kids down to these events. They are unique. Not many communities can pull off these events on a large scale. One big thing that drew me to the MPO was the entrepreneurial opportunities. We can dream big and take Mandan to the next level in terms of experiences, creating events and attractions, and creating a great quality of life for people who want to live here.
CM: WHAT WAS YOUR VISION AT FORT LINCOLN, AND HOW DOES THAT TRANSLATE TO THE MPO?
MS: My vision revolved around visitor service. I managed directly the interpretive program from the historic fort as well as the On-A-Slant Indian village. The art of interpretation is about creating unique experiences for the visitor... We really stressed the aspect of not having a canned speech. We weren’t tour guides; we were interpreters interpreting history for the visitors... We wanted to create connections for the visitors. All of those events at the park were geared toward creating long-lasting memories for visitors to the park... I was instrumental in creating the Haunted Fort. In its infancy, it was a weekend event that drew 200-300 people. It grew exponentially... In 2021 it had more than 9,000 people and had grown into a monthlong event. Halloween attractions really are the pivotal experience-based events... For the MPO, when you go to a community, you have those preconceived notions of a community. You have preconceived assumptions of what a downtown looks like, what amenities they can offer. The MPO really brings to the community an opportunity for us to facilitate unique experiences with our events. That can help break down preconceived assumptions a visitor or a resident could have. We really want to take that step to break down those and give people an opportunity to see what Mandan is really about.
CONNECTION | FEATURE CM: WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR THE MPO?
MS: I see the vision of the MPO really being a community asset, a community program that helps to elevate Mandan to new levels in terms of attracting and recruiting new talent, attracting new residents to the community, and also maintaining the current population we have. We have a lot of great things going on in the community from the new high school to new sports facilities. We have a new park being renovated in downtown Mandan. I see the MPO being part of a catalyst for that... Not just from the downtown corridor, but spreading those experiences throughout the city — using current city infrastructure to help elevate the events we have... Matt Schanandore I see some hero projects revolving around our park down here. We see some opportunities to get involved in a holiday event downtown. I think Mandan is really geared up for establishing long-term seasonal attractions. I think we’ll see a lot of success with the MPO long-term in Mandan. People who live in the way north get pigeonholed into “It’s only (warm enough for) summertime events...” Even though it is cold and snowy, we have the opportunity to create experiences in these spaces year-round.
CM: WHAT DO EVENTS ACHIEVE FOR THE MANDAN COMMUNITY?
MS: It achieves a quality of life. If you can have activities that are family-based, that gather people together, it’s a great opportunity for a city like Mandan... Events bring families together around this focal point of spending leisure time in a community. Over time the events actually create tradition. That’s key to Mandan’s success with events. It has created traditions for families that have spanned generations. I came to the Fourth of July parade as a child. Now I bring my kids to the parade. If you have moved away from Mandan, you might have a tradition to come back for the parade every year.
THE EVENT SEASON IN MANDAN IS IN FULL SWING. HERE ARE UPCOMING EVENTS: Buggies-N-Blues June 10-12 Main Street Mandan Rodeo Days July 2-4 Dacotah Centennial Park Art in the Park July 3-4 Dykshoorn Park Independence Day Parade July 4 10:00am Main Street Santa’s Arrival Nov. 26 Main Street
CM: WHAT IS THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF HOSTING EVENTS IN MANDAN?
MS: It’s heads in beds as people are traveling to the community. But it also gets people traveling through the community. It encourages both Mandan and Bismarck residents to get out into the community. It draws people through our business corridors; whether it’s Memorial Highway or Main Street or getting off the interstate. They can see the new businesses going up or new services being offered in Mandan. Having these events draws people in, it gets them out of their vehicles, walking around. Hopefully they stay awhile, they spend some dollars. Mandan offers a lot of small business opportunities, unique businesses... It reminds people that we’re here, and that helps with the economic impact in Mandan. There is a reason to come to Mandan, come downtown, and enjoy.

The 2022 Chamber EDC Annual Dinner was an evening to remember! One of the Chamber EDC’s largest events ever started with remarks from Chamber EDC Staff and Volunteer Leadership outlining all of the accomplishments from 2021, including: increases in new memberships, increases in membership retention, and the introduction of innovative events & programming. New to the Annual Dinner this year was the Chamber EDC’s Granite Award. Sponsored and presented by MDU Resources Group and Basin Electric Power Cooperative, the Granite Award recognizes a Bismarck-Mandan company who has been operating in the community for more than 50 years, and this year’s winner was EMC Insurance. The evening was capped off with an incredible performance from Antonina & David Hall; the Mentalists. Antonina & David dazzled the crowd with a telepathy performance that not only engaged them from the audience, but brought them up on stage to participate as well. Of course, none of this is possible without the help of the more than 800 Chamber EDC Members who attended, or the many sponsors who contributed to the evening’s success!

MEMBER SINCE 2003
Briefly tell us the history behind Securian Financial Advisors of ND and how you got started. A: Securian Financial Advisors of ND started in 2003. It is an independently owned and operated full service financial services company that focuses on the wants, wishes, goals and dreams of our clients. I joined SFAND in August of 2008 after working with another firm for the first 7 years of my career and became the President/ Owner of the firm in April 2021.
CONNECTION | MEMBER PROFILE How has the growth of Bismarck-Mandan impacted Securian Financial Advisors of ND? A: It has increased the need for the types of services we provide. With the influx of people from really all over the country, it has opened not only the types of people that we work with, but also the questions and situations that we deal with. What trends are taking place in your industry? A: We are seeing clients that seek a more wholistic approach and all-encompassing financial advice. They want us to look at their whole financial picture versus just a singular need like investments. Have there been any monumental changes within your industry that you’ve had to deal with? A: The biggest changes and challenges continue to be the regulatory environment. While good intended, it has made simple relationships very burdensome from a regulatory standpoint. I believe this hurts the very people they wanted to protect. What does the future of Securian Financial Advisors of ND look like and the industry as a whole look like to you? A: I think SFAND’s future is bright. We focus on relationships versus transactions. This allows us to be there for our client’s at every step of their financial livelihoods. I think the industry will continue to push toward a wholistic approach for taking care of client’s needs. The industry will also continue to evolve from a regulatory standpoint as advising becomes more complex. Securian Financial Advisors of ND became a member in 2003, why do you continue to renew? A: I think it’s important to be part of our business community as well as our community. The chamber supports not only our businesses but also our communities. What should other Chamber EDC members know about Securian Financial Advisors of ND that may assist them? A: I think it’s important to know that the client centric relationship is what’s important at SFAND. It’s not just talk to them if you have money to invest. Tell us what your wants, wishes, goals and dreams are and our job is to guide you to get there.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
BUSINESS ASSISTANCE PROGRAM OF THE MONTH: MANDAN GROWTH FUND
TECHNICAL SKILLS TRAINING GRANT APPLICATIONS OPEN
Mandan voters in 1991 approved a portion of the 1% city sales tax for job and economic development. The fund accumulated for this purpose is the Mandan Growth Fund. The Growth Fund Committee considers applications for assistance and incentives with a focus on developing employment within the area, expanding the local tax base, increasing capital investment and improving the entrepreneurial climate. The committee provides recommendations to the Mandan City Commission for final consideration.
The Technical Skills Training Grant program aims to offset the cost for program providers and employers in their effort to support the development of highly trained skilled workers to meet the demands of our labor market.
Some of the programs that are part of the Mandan Growth Fund include storefront improvement, retail incentive program, property tax exemption, and fire sprinkler assistance program.
More information and the Technical Skills Training Grant application can be found at ndgov.link/TSTG
The North Dakota Department of Commerce recently announced that the application window for the Technical Skills Training Grant program is now open through July 7.
New and existing programs that began after May 17, 2021, may qualify for this grant to train workers. All training programs must mitigate a workforce issue that was created or exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

EOP COMMITTEE HOSTS TWO SESSIONS
CHAMBER EDC RECEIVES PARTNERS IN PLANNING GRANT The Chamber EDC was recently announced as a recipient of a Partners in Planning grant through the North Dakota Department of Commerce.
North Mandan Opportunity Session Hosted at Marathon Petroleum.
The Mandan Tomorrow – Economic Opportunity and Prosperity (EOP) Committee hosted two separate sessions recently. The first session, hosted in late April, provided small business advice from the BAIL team. BAIL stands for banker, accountant, insurance agent, and lawyer. These professionals can guide owners in important aspects of starting, managing, and succession planning for a proven business.
The grant program supports nonprofit organizations and local governments with two grant options for completing a comprehensive plan or economic development/diversification strategic plan. A total of 12 applications were submitted from communities and regions across North Dakota with 7 being awarded grants. The Chamber EDC will use the grant funds to offset the costs of the consultant hired to complete the organization’s economic development strategic plan.
The second session, hosted in early May, focused on developments and opportunities available in north Mandan. The session featured information about projects north of interstate 94 that extend roadway, water, and sewer services for residential and commercial growth. Speakers talked about new subdivisions and available business sites including outlots surrounding the new high school, planned for a fall 2024 opening. The Mandan Tomorrow - Economic Opportunity and Prosperity Committee hosts educational business sessions with coordination services provided by the City of Mandan Business Development Department and Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC.

WELCOME TO THE CHAMBER EDC, D'ANDRA! I’m a Kingston, Jamaica native who moved to Bismarck, ND strictly to further my education and athletics at the University of Mary. I studied Business Administration, Marketing, and Economics during my undergraduate years, and have now started my graduate studies in the MBA program with a concentration in project management at the University of Mary. I’m also recognized an exceptional athlete by quite a few as I currently hold the university’s indoor and outdoor triple jump school record that stood since 2015. Additionally, I’m the 2022 NCAA Division II Indoor Women’s Triple Jump champion – the first ever for the university, and a 6x All-American. I think I’m a decent athlete striving to accomplish as many goals as possible in the time I have remaining. I’m currently an intern here at the Chamber EDC and hope to elevate my professional career from the knowledge I’ll be acquiring during this time. I have entirely too much time on my hands, and it’s quite evident as my spare time is spent either with my cat, Tilly, sewing additional clothes I don’t need, attempting another DIY I found on TikTok, or researching business propositions for the business I may potentially never attempt to develop.

CHAMBER EDC’S COMMITTEE HONORS TEACHERS FOR 35TH YEAR
For 35 years, the Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC has honored outstanding teachers from around Bismarck-Mandan and this year was no different thanks to our presenting sponsor; Cornerstone Bank!
The Chamber EDC is proud to recognize educators in Bismarck and Mandan by first soliciting nominations from the public. WELCOME TO THE CHAMBER EDC, MAGGIE! I was born and raised in Pensacola, FL (yes you read that right, Florida!). My travels started after I graduated from Full Sail University with a Bachelor’s in Film. My first stop was in New Hampshire, where I was able to work at their ABC News affiliate and for an ECHL hockey team as a production assistant. I loved setting up the studio for all the different segments at the station and being behind the camera at the games. My second stop was Texas, where I expanded my passion in graphic design and was able work for ESPN during a Saturday Night Baylor vs. Oklahoma football game. And now, my third stop, Bismarck, ND. I’m so excited to take on the role of Event Coordinator with the Chamber EDC and become more ingrained in the Bismarck Mandan community! Since I moved here, I’ve had nothing but welcome arms from everyone I’ve met, and I can’t wait to give back with events I’ll be planning. In my free time, I love to read, watch TV, paint, go shopping, FaceTime my niece and nephews, and during the winter watch the snow fall or during the summer sit in the sun on my balcony with my cat, Luna.

45 YEARS FOR KNDR 104.7 FM Today’s Christian Music” KNDR 104.7 FM in Mandan will celebrate 45 years of broadcasting on June 21, 2022. They currently reach people in an 80-mile radius, 24 hours a day, with the message of Jesus Christ—and farther with translators that repeat the broadcast in Beulah, and in Firesteel & Mobridge, South Dakota. In 1977, after much prayer and $100,000 in offerings and pledged support from area churches, KNDR was on the air and reached people 18 hours a day in a 40-mile radius. The studio built at the base of Crying Hill, 1400 NE 3rd Street in Mandan, was expanded in 1995 courtesy of an estate gift. Predominantly faithful donors, and some advertisers, have continued to support Christian radio. The translators came in 2005 and 2007. As technology has advanced from records and reels to tapes, CDs and streaming, fewer people have been required to run the studio. Today seven employees are on staff, keeping KNDR live and local during the day.

UNIVERSITY OF MARY LAUNCHES ONLINE ELEMENTARY EDUCATION DEGREE While school districts across North Dakota and the country are struggling to find teachers, small, rural towns especially are grappling with the shortage. When teachers can’t be recruited to stay and serve in small communities, not only does the school struggle to function and suffer, but so does the viability and vitality of the town. Furthermore, hardships occur to families and towns as graduating high schoolers or professionals wanting to change careers and become teachers, leave their rural communities for bigger cities to get a teaching degree at a college or university. To support rural community schools in retaining their talent pool, the University of Mary is meeting potential first-through-eighth-grade teacher candidates where they are — in their own rural hometowns — and offering them the opportunity to stay there and get a full, comprehensive elementary education degree online. The online elementary education program is unique because it mirrors the in-person format, even allowing students the option of taking courses as part of University of Mary’s one-of-a-kind Year-Round Campus (YRC) format.
Those who elect this option will take eight continuous semesters with short breaks in between so they can graduate in 2.6 years instead of four years — proven to save time and money. The University of Mary was the only school in the North Dakota to recently be awarded a grant from the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) worth $575,000 that will go towards scholarships for eligible students. The University of Mary undergraduate elementary education program continues to excel with a 100-percent employment rate. The University of Mary is fulfilling the dream set forth by its founders and sponsors the Benedictine Sisters of Annunciation Monastery. The private, Catholic university in Bismarck continues to carry out the Sisters’ mission as it serves the needs of the region and beyond by offering a complete and comprehensive elementary education online degree.

CONTINUUM OF CARE ACCEPTING RFPS FOR YOUTH HOMELESSNESS ASSISTANCE North Dakota’s Homeless Continuum of Care (CoC) is accepting Request for Proposals for the Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program (YHDP). “Understanding the depth of youth homelessness is challenging in a rural state,” said Dave Flohr, North Dakota Housing Finance Agency (NDHFA) executive director. "Through the YHDP, we are committed to ending youth homelessness in North Dakota.” The ND CoC received a $2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to support selected communities in the development and implementation of a coordinated community approach to preventing and ending youth homelessness. The population to be served by the program is youth experiencing homelessness or who are at risk of homelessness, including unaccompanied and pregnant or parenting youth, where no member of the household is older than 24 years. Eligible applications include nonprofit organizations, state and local governments, instrumentalities of local governments, and public housing agencies. To learn more about the YHDP, visit ndcontinuumofcare.org. The application deadline is June 8, 2022. NDHFA is the Collaborative Applicant for the state’s CoC, a communitywide commitment to the goal of ending homelessness. The program provides funding to support efforts to end homelessness, promotes access to and for effective utilization of programs, and optimizes the self-sufficiency of individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

A: Once you have begun your physical
therapy course of care, it is vital to communicate with your therapist before you decide to stop your therapy if you feel better. You and your physical therapist can review the goals you established together at the beginning of your treatment to maximize the benefit of your treatment. Commitment to your appointments and consistency with your home program is paramount to a successful outcome. Each time you meet helps your physical therapist identify changes throughout your course of care and allows for adjustments to that plan when you are ready. Sticking with your physical therapy and finishing it through to the end will help you avoid any setbacks, regain function sooner and prevent the injury/pain from returning. We want to see you get back to doing the things in life that bring you joy! There is no referral needed to access quality physical therapy. See your Movement Specialist today! A: From the moment of diagnosis and
for the balance of life, an individual diagnosed with cancer is a considered a survivor. Today, more people than ever are surviving cancer because of better treatments, prevention, and early detection. As a result, much more attention is being placed on the long term adjustment of patients and most people want to find ways to reduce the chances of their cancer coming back. Some tips for all cancer survivors include: 1.
Quit smoking- Smoking after cancer treatment can increase the chances of getting cancer at the same or a different site.
2.
Maintain a healthy weight & stay active - Eating well can help you reach a healthy weight and exercise after cancer may help lower the risk of recurrence.
3.
Cut down on how much alcohol you drink- Alcohol increases the risk of certain cancers.

Q: WHAT IS WINDOWS 11? A: It seems like only yesterday we were
swapping out Windows 7 for Windows 10 and told that would be the LAST version. In June 2021, Microsoft announced Windows 11. This new version is a revamp of the user interface that Windows 10 had to improve the ease of use. New features include integration of Microsoft Teams and productivity features, security and accessibility updates and performance improvements. When the user undocks a laptop, the windows on the monitor will be minimized, and when the laptop is redocked to a monitor, Windows will put everything exactly where it was before. Features removed include Internet Explorer, Skype, Paint 3D. The touch keyboard no longer docks in screens larger than 18 inches. Live tiles from Windows 10 has been replaced by Widgets. The layout may appear different at first but is customizable, as we have come to expect. The apps are grouped in the middle of the taskbar and can be moved to the left depending on user preference. Task Manager has been removed from the task bar; it is still accessible using Ctrl+Alt+Del.

Q: “WHEN YOU REPRESENT AN ARTIST IN YOUR GALLERY, IS HER ARTWORK AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE ONLY WHEN IT’S ON DISPLAY DURING AN EXHIBITION?” A: Good news: an exhibition is not your
only opportunity to purchase artwork from The Capital Gallery. We stage each show to be on display for two to three months. The transition from one exhibition to the next begins with taking artwork off the walls and pedestals and carefully wrapping them for storage. Sometimes though, we will transfer pieces of artwork to another one of our galleries (we have two small galleries in the back of our 4th Street building) or deliver them to The Capital Gallery West in Medora for display. During any given exhibition, someone will come into the gallery and ask to see work by an artist that we don’t currently have on our main gallery floor, and we generally have something on hand by all the artists we represent.
A gallery exhibition is a wonderful time to purchase a piece of art, but if you ever If you are concerned about your programs miss an exhibition, don’t be afraid to ask being compatible with the new operating one of us at the gallery if we can show you system, reach out to your IT provider or the what else we have available! Contact us vendor of the specific software. Chances 701-751-1698 or visit our website, Theare, if it was compatible with Windows 10, CapitalGallery.com. it will still be compatible with Windows 11.

Q: WITH SUMMER APPROACHING, HOW DO YOU PREVENT HEAT-RELATED ILLNESSES AND INJURIES? A: Sunburn is the most common heat-re-
lated injury. Preventing sunburn is a matter of being prepared and thorough. Wear sunscreen rated SPF 30 or higher and reapply periodically, especially if you are sweating. Try to avoid extended exposure to the sun between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. when rays are hottest and most damaging. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are two other big heat-related concerns. These occur when the body loses the ability to regulate its temperature and overheats. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include dizziness, fatigue, headaches, excessive sweating, nausea and vomiting. If heat exhaustion progresses without intervention, one could develop heat stroke. Symptoms of heat stroke include confusion, irrational thoughts and seizures. Often the body ceases to sweat and the skin becomes hot and dry. It is critical to seek medical attention immediately if you experience these symptoms. Stay hydrated to avoid heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Limit sun exposure by wearing a wide-brimmed hat, and keep your body cool with light, loose-fitting clothing that promotes airflow.
