I

t’s July. I hope you are enjoying the summer and taking in the many activities throughout our communities. Attending the Mandan Fourth of July parade and the rodeo or the fireworks on the Capitol lawn with the Bismarck Symphony is something everyone should experience. It is true Americana at its best. Summer is also a great networking time for members at “Friday’s at the Chamber,” which is held on our Chamber plaza. This free lunch event is held once a month in the summer; the next two are July 10 and August 14. As we make the turn toward the last half of 2015, I want to take a moment and reflect on the work plan for the year. The Chamber continues to meet the obligation of its mission to be Leaders for Prosperity, Advocates for Business. After a successful legislative session, the attention in the last half of the year turns more to advancing and creating dialogue on local issues. We extend our congratulations to Mandan on the successful sales tax vote. The construction of new recreational facilities is important to the community’s talent attraction and retention efforts. Studies show the Millennial generation is inclined to pick a community based on its amenities and then find a job. This is, of course, the reverse of how most of us in the pre-Millennial age group think. I’m sure the generation before us was sometimes perplexed about our perspective as well. Five South, the project proposed for downtown, continues to move forward. This is another project intended to attract and retain young people in our community. As proposed, it includes a full-service hotel across from the Bismarck Events Center that will assist in attracting more convention business to our community. More than 20 businesses are coming together through Bismarck Futures with the intent of activating this corridor. The project has a Facebook page and its website is www.fivesouthbismarck.com. Finally, as we look toward August, be sure to put Thursday, August 6 on your calendar. From time to time, we need to stop and reflect on the accomplishments of our local businesses. This is the Chamber’s Celebrate BismarckMandan Awards event. We will present awards for small business person of the year, entrepreneur of the year, the Mike Fink award for steady growth and profitability and the Granite Award. This is a great luncheon event. Until next month, enjoy the summer.

TOURISM PLAYS IMPORTANT ROLE IN BISMARCK-MANDAN ECONOMY

By Kylie Blanchard, Clearwater Communications

Tourism is one of the state’s top industries, and its increasing impact is becoming more evident in Bismarck-Mandan’s growing tourism sector. “North Dakota is receiving a lot of national attention, and there is a renewed interest in visiting us,” said Sheri Grossman, executive director of the Bismarck-Mandan Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Anytime a meeting, convention or event is held in Bismarck-Mandan, the entire community benefits. Attendees come to stay in our hotels, eat in our restaurants, shop in our stores and visit our attractions.” She said visitors come to the community for many reasons and provide a significant boost to the BismarckMandan and state economy. “All totaled, it has helped to make tourism North Dakota’s third largest industry,” notes Grossman.

Tourism in Bismarck-Mandan

In 2014, Bismarck-Mandan hosted 400 meetings and events, drawing 190,000 attendees that spent $27.6 million in the community. A total of $11.1 million of these expenditures came from regional and national groups. “This is a significant amount of out-of-state dollars injected into our economy,” said Grossman. According to the IHS Tourism Satellite Account, which provides statistics to the North Dakota Tourism Division measuring the impact of travel on a local economy in jobs, wages, spending and taxes, Burleigh County visitors had a total spending impact of $349.95 million in 2013. At a 25 percent growth over 2012, this was also one of the largest spending increases in the state. Additionally, the spending impact of visitors to Morton County in 2013 was $51.58 million. Grossman noted, in recent years, the community has added 1,000 additional hotel rooms, bringing the total number of available rooms to 3,500. “In our industry, we talk a lot about events and meeting attendees; however, leisure visitors are very important to our communities, too. Whether visiting friends and family, shopping or just a weekend getaway, leisure visitors also contribute to our economy.”

After 18 years with the CVB, Sheri Grossman moved into the executive director position on April 1st.

4 | Chamber Connection

www.bismarckmandan.com She noted this impact reaches beyond just benefiting area businesses and reaches all members of the community. “Visitors generate sales tax that is used by city governments to fund not only roads, streets and other infrastructure, but also for property tax relief.”

The On-A-Slant Indian Village remains a popular destination for tourists.

The BismarckMandan Convention and Visitors Bureau

The BismarckMandan Convention and Visitors Bureau Photo Credit: ND Parks & Rec. (Bismarck-Mandan CVB) is the oldest CVB in North Dakota, with 35 years of experience in promoting the community, and has played an important role in the strong impact tourism has on the area. “Our CVB has a lot of experience, and we work with groups from all over the world, selling them on the attributes of BismarckMandan,” said Grossman.

Since stepping into the lead at the Bismarck-Mandan CVB, Grossman says she has taken steps to continue to build on the organization’s success. “My vision for the CVB is much different than where we are now,” she noted. “That involves not only building on so many things that we do effectively now, but also changing, adjusting, growing and improving to be better.”

In 2014, the Bismarck-Mandan CVB sales team made more than 2,500 contacts with new and existing meeting and event decision-makers. “Nearly 800 of those calls were prospecting calls to new groups that have never met in Bismarck-Mandan, representing a 13 percent increase over 2013,” she said. Grossman has been with the Bismarck-Mandan CVB for 18 years and stepped into the role of executive director on April 1. “I am very passionate about this community and the tourism industry, and I am so excited to lead the organization charged with promoting Bismarck-Mandan as a destination.” She said the Bismarck-Mandan CVB is a huge economic driver in the community, and she wants to grow that presence. “I want to take a more prominent role in establishing and demonstrating heightened involvement by the CVB as a vital component in the economic impact and success in our community.”

Tourism Impact Spotlight

With tourism on the rise in the Bismarck-Mandan community, area attractions like the Dakota Zoo are experiencing an upswing in attendance. “Tourism in Photo Credit: Dakota Zoo Bismarck-Mandan has a substantial impact on Dakota Zoo’s attendance,” said Larry Klemer, marketing/membership director. “Our attendance numbers have remained in the 150,000 range for the past two years, following steady growth postflood in 2012 and 2013.” Although the Dakota Zoo doesn’t track in-state and out-of-state attendance numbers, Klemer said there are numerous out-of-state license plates in the facility’s parking lot daily. “We also welcome a large number of school groups from around the state in the spring and fall, and we have many visitors using reciprocal memberships from other zoos in North Dakota and across the United States.” The Dakota Zoo uses many avenues to reach potential visitors, including radio and billboard advertising; advertisements with the Chamber, Bismarck-Mandan CVB and other publications; social media; and rack cards at rest areas, hotels and gas stations. “We also use a fulfillment service that delivers rack cards and brochures to people requesting visitor information for this area,” said Klemer. He said continued growth in population and community offerings will only continue to bolster tourism and its benefits. “The population growth of Bismarck-Mandan in recent years, coupled with the area’s emergence as a shopping, medical and entertainment center, paints a bright future for tourism in Bismarck-Mandan.” 6 | Chamber Connection

Grossman has begun the process of developing a strategic plan through hiring a consultant to lead the organization in formulating and implementing a plan to guide the Bismarck-Mandan CVB for the next three years. “The strategic plan will help us determine where we want to be in the future, gather input from stakeholders, and identify and benchmark resources, partnerships and tools the CVB will need. This plan will become our road map to success.” The Bismarck-Mandan CVB will also begin the process of rebranding. “Our logo was new when I started 18 years ago, and our communities have significantly changed and blossomed. Rebranding will be much more than a new logo and it will be more than a ‘refresh or facelift.’ It will be a process in which the CVB re-launches with a vibrant and relevant theme.” Grossman said research has been incorporated into the strategic plan to help in the rebranding efforts. “Research will inform us how our image is perceived by locals, our competitors and, most importantly, our customers.” The Bismarck-Mandan CVB will also continue to address issues impeding tourism’s growth in the community. “Weather has always been a concern for groups from other parts of the country, and we work hard to correct misconceptions,” notes Grossman. Limited air travel can also dissuade some visitors, she says, but notes the Bismarck Airport and the community constantly strive to attract new air service. “We also need to be sure our facilities, including convention, sporting, events and hotels, keep us at a competitive level,” Grossman noted. “Other communities are constantly building and updating facilities.”

Photo Credit: ND Parks & Rec.

www.bismarckmandan.com “Sometimes when we are involved with meetings or organizations in other locations, we might forget the wonderful venue we have right in our own backyard,” she continued. “Time and time again, these groups tell their local contacts how much they enjoyed their meetings in Bismarck-Mandan.”

in Bismarck-Mandan CVB convention packets and having brochures stocked and promoted by the Bismarck-Mandan CVB; marketing members’ names, website links and promotional packages on the Bismarck-Mandan CVB website; and recommending and referring member businesses to meeting planners, convention delegates and leisure travelers.

Building Partnerships

Grossman said partnering with area businesses will continue to play an important role in growing tourism in Bismarck-Mandan. “We have a phenomenal State Tourism Department ‘right next door,’ and I want to take advantage of the synergy with that strategic partnership and relationship,” she noted. “It is also helpful for businesses to become members of the CVB,” Grossman continued. “Membership plays a large part in the successful operation of the CVB, and we want to share all Bismarck-Mandan has to offer to the rest of the country.” Businesses also benefit from Bismarck-Mandan CVB membership through receiving the Insight newsletter, published monthly, which lists upcoming conferences and events; distributing promotional items or coupons

The Future of Tourism in Bismarck-Mandan

“As a very vibrant and growing community, we have the opportunity to move to the next level in the market for meetings, conventions and events. We want visitors to experience and enjoy our events, attractions, businesses and amenities so they come often, stay longer and return frequently,” said Grossman. She said visitors are looking for many of the amenities Bismarck-Mandan offers, and continuing to build on the community’s success will benefit everyone involved. “The future of tourism is very bright in BismarckMandan. Visitors and local residents want many of the same things, including good restaurants, green space, shopping, signage and a safe community. These are all things Bismarck-Mandan offers.”

MEMBER PROFILE Featuring Layn Mudder with Q: Briefly tell us the history of LPT Images. A: I started out as a portrait photographer. More than a dozen years ago, a local magazine asked me to photograph food. I really enjoyed it and the other commercial work that followed - product photography, real estate, agriculture, etc. It allows me to focus on the more technical aspects of photography like lighting and composition. When we lost my father-in-law to cancer, my wife and I talked about how he had spent the last years of his life doing something he loved. My wife encouraged me to do the same, providing photography services for businesses. I renamed my business to reflect the change. LPT stands for “Layn’s Play Time” because it’s my time to do what I love. 8 | Chamber Connection

LPT IMAGES

Q: Tell us about yourself and your role within the organization. A: More than once, people have asked about the size of my business after they looked at my website. They assume I have staff, but it’s just me. I am a sole proprietor. I answer the phone, book appointments, take the pictures and process them, and pay the bills. Q: What differentiates your company from its competitors? A: My sole focus is commercial photography, supporting the needs of local and national businesses. My job is to help those businesses showcase their product or service, and tell their story.

www.bismarckmandan.com Q: How has the growth of Bismarck-Mandan impacted your company? A: Our growing community has provided greater opportunities and need for services like mine. Q: What industry trends are taking place? A: Very few people buy cameras any more. Everyone uses the camera on their phone. Actually owning and using a camera has become something of a novelty making using a photographer an event. Q: Have there been any monumental changes in the industry that you’ve had to deal with? A: The transitional to digital cameras is the biggest change I’ve dealt with and it is still impacting the industry with new technology being rolled out every day. Q: What does the future of your business look like and the industry as a whole look like to you? A: We live in a visual world. The demand for quality images is stronger than ever due to the internet and social media. Q: LPT Images has been a member since 2012, why do you continue to renew each year? A: Primarily for networking. Chamber events are a great opportunity for me to catch up with my clients and make new contacts.

Layn can often times be found Friday nights taking pictures of the races at the Dacotah Speedway.

Q: What should Chamber members know about your company that may assist them within theirs? A: Know yourself and what you are good at. When I owned a portrait studio, I tried to do everything for everyone. I was run ragged and was miserable. Now that I am focused on commercial photography, I’m much happier.

Your plans. Our priority. Strategic financial advice to help your business grow through every adventure, bump in the road and opportunity that comes along. Right here. Right for you.

BISMARCK MANDAN COMMUNITY FOUNDATION AIMING FOR $1 MILLION MATCH The Bismarck Mandan Community Foundation has an immediate opportunity to more than double its assets in the next four months. The Otto Bremer Foundation is providing a dollar-for-dollar matching grant, up to $1 million, to grow the community’s endowment fund. Individuals and businesses are being asked to consider a contribution to the fund this summer in order to capture the matching grant monies before the deadline in October.

The purpose of the Bismarck Mandan Community Foundation is to build a permanent financial resource that will benefit the community far into the future. Gifts from many individuals and businesses are pooled into a single fund, invested, and a portion of the earnings used to provide grants for community projects in Bismarck, Mandan, and Morton/Burleigh Counties. “The unique aspect of the Bismarck Mandan Community Foundation is that ANY non-profit organization or governmental entity can apply for one of its grants,” explains Director Christi Stonecipher. “The fund is only limited to the geographic area it serves. It’s our community’s charitable savings account.” Previous grant recipients include Hope Manor, Wing Theatre, the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Bismarck, Aid, Inc., and the Ruth Meiers Hospitality House.

20 | Chamber Connection

The Bismarck Mandan Community Foundation fund is managed by the North Dakota Community Foundation (NDCF), but all fundraising and granting activities take place on the local level, driven by an Advisory Committee made up of volunteers from the area. NDCF manages 60 different community foundations across the state. “Some of our local community endowment funds give $50,000 every year to programs and projects in their town,” explains Kevin Dvorak, President and CEO of NDCF. “In fact, one of our funds gives out $250,000 every year in grant money to various non-profits. The Bismarck Mandan Community Foundation has the opportunity to become a significant funding source to improve the quality of life for the people of our area if we can grow the fund now.” All donations to the fund are tax deductible to the fullest extent of state and federal law and those that meet statutory limitations qualify for the 40% ND income tax credit for gifts to qualified ND endowment funds. Donations may be sent to the Bismarck Mandan Community Foundation at PO Box 387, Bismarck, ND 58502-0387 or made online at www. bismancommunityfoundation.org. Anonymous gifts should include a written request for anonymity.

CURRENT AND FORMER UNIVERSITY OF MARY PRESIDENTS EARN HIGHEST HONOR

At 31 years, Sister Thomas Welder, OSB, served the longest tenure as female president at any college or university in America at the time she retired in 2009. Days later, at age 34, Monsignor James Shea succeeded Welder and became the youngest serving college president in the United States, and still is today. On Saturday, May 16, 2015, both Welder and Shea received honorary doctorate degrees — the highest honor bestowed by any college or university —from Belmont Abbey College (Charlotte, NC) and Thomas More College, (Merrimack, NH), respectively.

Active in community, state and national professional, civic and religious organizations, Welder has promoted and modeled the Benedictine values. Under her leadership, Mary College expanded to university status in 1986 and added undergraduate and graduate degree programs at locations throughout the state and region. During her presidency, enrollment grew from 925 students to nearly 3,000 in 2004. As president emerita, Welder most recently earned the Caritas Award from Catholic Charities North Dakota. In 2004, she received the prestigious Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award — the highest state award presented to select individuals who have achieved national recognition, reflecting credit and honor upon North Dakota and its citizens. The award states, “Sister Thomas is recognized as a woman who lives, serves and leads by example. Envisioning the University of Mary as the nation’s premier institution for the preparation of servant leaders, Sister Thomas promotes competence in communication, commitment to values and service to community.” During his current tenure as the sixth president of the University of Mary, Shea has spearheaded several groundbreaking higher education initiatives to include the new Year-Round Campus program that allows students to graduate in 2.6 years and earn their master’s degree in four years. In Oct. of 2014, Shea announced a partnership with Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) that will allow incoming freshmen nursing majors at Mary to receive their senior year free. He entered the University of Mary into an unprecedented collaborative agreement with the largest public research university in America — Arizona State University — that allows ASU students to take courses from Mary in theological studies and Catholic studies.

Shea’s other popular visionary programs include a new campus in Rome, Italy; the Catholic Scholars program that provides free room and board to eligible graduates of Catholic high schools offered to firsttime, full-time freshmen; in 2010 he created the Bishop Paul A. Zipfel Catholic Studies Program that has quickly become the second largest in the United States.

Sr. Thomas Welder

Shea previously served as pastor to several parishes in the Bismarck diocese while teaching at the Catholic schools in the region. He began his undergraduate work at Jamestown College, majoring in English and history, and then entered the seminary for the Msgr. James Shea Diocese of Bismarck, earning a bachelor’s degree and a pontifical master’s degree (licentiate) in philosophy at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He studied classical Greek at the University of Texas at Austin and continued at the Vatican’s North American College, studying theology at the Gregorian and Lateran universities in Rome. Monsignor is also an alumnus of the Institutes for Higher Education at the Graduate School of Education, Harvard University. Shea has worked with Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity at the Gift of Peace AIDS Hospice while teaching religion at two innercity elementary schools in Washington, D.C. In Rome, he served as chaplain for the Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital and also at the Rome campus of the Center for Catholic Studies at the University of St. Thomas. Most recently Shea served as chairman of internal affairs for the National Advisory Council of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops as well as the Governor’s Commission on Education in the State of North Dakota. BISMARCK SCHOOLS BREAKS GROUND FOR COMMUNITY ATHLETIC COMPLEX School administrators, athletic directors, local business leaders, architects, contractors, and parents were on hand for a groundbreaking for a new Bismarck Public Schools athletic complex that will be used by the entire community.

The Bismarck School Board had approved bids and plans for the track, football and soccer fields, grandstands and concessions. The first fields should be done by October and the track next spring. Baseball and softball fields are planned for the future. Some fields are turf; some are grass. Superintendent Tamara Uselman said, “Space for youth and adult athletic activities is always in short supply in Bismarck. This will truly be a community facility. It will not only be used by Legacy and our other public high schools, but by other schools and groups as well.” The complex is located at LHS. Uselman says the district is looking for ways to partner with the community for parts of the outdoor project, which could include naming rights for donors.

STARION FINANCIAL NAMED A TOPPERFORMING COMMUNITY BANK IN THE NATION Starion Financial was named to “The Best of the Best” list by Independent Banker magazine and received a superior rating from BauerFinancial.

Independent Banker is a publication of the Independent Community Bankers of America, an organization that represents more than 6,000 community banks of all sizes throughout the country. It separates banks based on asset size and ranks the top 25 by their return on average assets (ROA) and return on average equity (ROE) ratios. For 2014, Starion was evaluated as a subchapter S bank with assets of $1 billion or more. Starion’s ROE rank jumped from number 15 in 2013 to 7 in 2014. The bank also improved its ROA rank from 20 in 2013 to 8 in 2014. Based on data from the fourth quarter of 2014, Starion also earned a five-star “superior” rating, the highest possible, from BauerFinancial, the nation’s leading independent bank and credit union rating firm. BauerFinancial has been reporting on and analyzing the performance of U.S. banks and credit unions since 1983. Star ratings are assigned on a scale of zero-to-five stars, with five being the strongest, and are based on the overall financial picture of the financial institution. The ratings are independent, meaning no institution is able to pay to be rated or excluded. Craig Larson, Starion Financial president/CEO, attributes the advancement and recognition to the hard work and dedication of Starion employees. “Earning recognition from both of these entities speaks highly of the commitment our employees make to our customers,” he says. “When our customers are successful, our bank succeeds as well. This allows us to support our employees, our customers and the communities we serve even better.”

EARTHKIND® PLANTS THE SEEDS OF KINDNESS IN NORTH DAKOTA.

On Thursday, May 28, earthkind® planted the seeds for a community garden that will feed hundreds of North Dakota residents. The garden is located behind the Legacy Methodist Church in Bismarck and is part of a larger project the local natural pest prevention company launched in April. The project is called #BeKind and it challenged a group of volunteers to make kindness grow.

Throughout the months of April and May, members of a woman’s leadership program, sponsored by the Center for Technology and Business, were each given $50 and asked to perform a random act of kindness, locally. “It was all part of a bigger plan,” Kari Warberg Block, earthkind®’s CEO laughed. “We knew that if we could plant the seeds of kindness, they would begin sprouting all over town, and we weren’t disappointed. We watched as some of the women matched our donations, so they could have an even bigger impact. And then, we saw people they offered to help, ask if they could pay it forward, and give the money to someone who might need it more. “

An experiment that began with the North Dakota Women’s Leadership graduates -- grew into a project that fed hungry families, kept the lights on for local residents and sprinkled kindness throughout the community. Unsuspecting residents of Minot, Bismarck and New Town were surprised with simple pleasures like ice cream cones, flowers and free meals. “earthkind®’s community garden was actually inspired by one of our volunteers,” Warberg Block explained. “Ten year old Bryce Dahle heard about the #BeKind project and asked his mother Julie, if he could participate. He wanted to give baskets of fresh fruit and vegetables to families that were less fortunate than his own. He told us that his dream was to be able to give out even more baskets, so we decided to help him make kindness grow a little more. He and his friends are going to be helping us all summer as we grow vegetables, herbs and edible flowers. “ And while the #BeKind project began in North Dakota, Warberg Block is hoping that its impact will be felt around the globe. More information on earthkind®’s #BeKind campaign is available on the company’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/earthkindinc.

REALTORS® FROM BISMARCK-MANDAN CONVERGE ON THE NATION’S CAPITAL

Realtors® and leaders from the Bismarck Mandan Board of REALTORS ® joined nearly 8,500 other guests from across the country in Washington, D.C.,to attend the 2015 Realtor® Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo, May 11-15. In attendance from the local association was Kristin Oban, President; Amy Hullet, Presidentelect; Karin Haskell, member; Mary Splichal, member; Greg Larson, NDAR President; and Vicki Roller, NDAR Past President; Jill Beck, CEO of NDAR, Nancy Willis, Government Affairs Director for NDAR; and Nancy Deichert, Association Executive of the Bismarck Mandan Board of REALTORS. While in the nation’s capital, local participants were part of a group of about thirty North Dakotans that met with Senator Heidi Heitkamp, Senator John Hoeven, and Congressman Kevin Cramer and their staffs on Capitol Hill to ensure qualified buyers and investors in the Bismarck-Mandan community and surrounding area have access to safe and affordable mortgage financing and to protect and advance real estate-related policies.

“Attending the Realtor® Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo offers Realtors® an opportunity to meet face-toface with decision makers and be heard on the issues that affect the industry and consumers’ ability to buy, sell and invest in real estate,” said Kristin Oban, President of the Bismarck Mandan Board of REALTORS®. “While meeting with lawmakers, regulatory officials and industry executives in Washington, Realtors® urged support for the issues that are most important to the industry, communities and the clients that we serve.” Realtors®’ meetings with North Dakota’s Congressional Delegation focused on important residential and commercial real estate issues to homeowners and investors, as well as extending the Mortgage Forgiveness Tax Relief Act, which expired at the end of 2014 and prevents distressed homeowners from facing excessive income tax bills on forgiven home loan debt. Realtors® also urged lawmakers to protect commercial real estate related tax provisions, such as retaining like-kind exchange provisions and making permanent the 15-year depreciation period for leasehold improvements. In addition, Realtors® advocated legislation to reform patent demand letters, set nationwide data security standards, and pass the Mortgage Choice Act to end discrimination against affiliated lenders.

“Realtors® do so much more than list and sell properties. The discussions we had about greater access to safe credit, patent reform, mortgage debt forgiveness tax relief, and commercial real estate tax provisions will help advance policies that strengthen homeownership and property rights and make a positive difference for consumers and our industry,” said Oban. During the week-long conference, Realtors® participated in sessions with a variety of industry experts and government officials who discussed many of the critical housing, mortgage finance and real estate investment issues facing real estate today. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julián Castro provided a housing industry outlook to meeting attendees and referenced credit availability as the biggest hurdle to homeownership. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Director Richard Cordray discussed changes to loan closing procedures and documents, stating that the new mortgage rules are in place to educate and empower buyers to “know before they owe.”
