I
t’s amazing how many activities there are during the summer months in our communities. The Chamber has its share of opportunities and programs, in addition to working behind the scenes on other programs and events.
• The Chamber Golf Scramble was outstanding this year with 130 golfers, great weather, and awesome partners to help put on the event. Chamber staff, led by Amanda Schwieters, helped make this year’s event one of the best ever! Congrats to Chris Sievert from Consolidated Construction on his hole-in-one! • Lemonade Day 2017 was a sweet success as 360 young entrepreneurs in our communities signed up to be the next big thing in lemonade sales. Thanks again to our Chamber partners who helped bring this incredible program to Bismarck and Mandan. Big thanks to David Leingang and the Chamber staff for making this program such a success this year. And we couldn’t have done it without our super City Champions, Jena Gullo from United Way and John Bollinger from the Bismarck Larks! (Which, if you haven’t been to a game yet, you should!)

• Planning has already begun for our Sporting Clays Shootout (Aug. 25), the “Shot in the Dark” Chamber Night Golf Scramble (Sept. 7), and our great Celebrate Bismarck-Mandan luncheon to recognize businesses and teachers (Sept. 14). Our advocacy role also remains active this summer. The Government Affairs Committee is monitoring several interim legislative committees and studies which align with our Legislative Action Plan. We are grateful to have Ron Eidshaug, Vice President, Congressional and Public Affairs for the U.S. Chamber, join us and give an insight into the Regulatory Accountability Act and other federal issues of importance. I am fortunate to have the flexibility to be at many of these events and meetings. It has given me a very good look into our communities and how the Chamber interacts with other stakeholders in our region. We continue to be thoughtful, prudent advocates for our membership and the business community as a whole, and we’ll continue to participate when we should, and advocate when we must. When Sisters Sweet-nSour Treats analyzed their lemonade stand results at Kirkwood Mall, they noticed something about their demographics. Older men were a missing segment of their customer base. Of all the demographics they served, most older men walked by without buying lemonade. David Leingang, Community Growth Director for the BismarckMandan Chamber of Commerce, analyzed the results with them. Young entrepreneurs learn lessons on the cost of goods, return on investment, creating their product, expenses,
profit margins and collaborating with business partners. www.bismarckmandan.com “As a mentor I learned there are so many important conversations that we don’t even think of having with the youth in our community ... ” said Jena Gullo, Executive Director of Missouri Slope Area United Way. “Just the simple things — what’s the difference between a checking account and a savings account? What’s the difference between growth and net profit? Why would you save? What would you save for?” In addition to mentoring a youth in the program, Gullo served as a City Champion promoting Lemonade Day in Bismarck-Mandan. Gullo said she enjoyed working with her mentee and instilling skills that aren’t just for one day; they’re for a lifetime. “Knowing that only 35 percent of our youth feel they have a positive adult role model, that really bothers me, and I think it should bother everyone in our community,” Gullo said citing United Way’s 2015 community needs assessment. “If people can take that extra time to be there for their children and the children in the community, it really goes a long way.” John Bollinger, General Manager for the Bismarck Larks, also served as City Champion for Lemonade Day. “Encouraging entrepreneurship in young people is a really important idea,” Bollinger said. “Being a small business owner myself running this team, when I was a kid I didn’t really have those opportunities to engage the idea that you could start a business, set your own pricing, product, be in charge of your own vision. Even if it is something as small as selling lemonade, these kind of challenges and activities get kids thinking outside the box. Small business is such a big part of our economy and vibrant communities.”
After youth set their financial goals, they start to make their business plan. Youth are encouraged to secure a business partner, whether that is a sibling, friend, parent, or other family member. Ella McKechnie, 11, and Hayleigh Fischer, 10, partnered to create L&H’s Pucker Stand in front of Schumacher Diamond Cutters in Bismarck.
The young owners of Sisters Sweet-n-Sour Treats have already started thinking about how they will make their stand bigger and better next year.
The friends allotted half of their profits to donate to a 4-year-old girl with an inoperable brain tumor and half of their profits to attend a national dance competition in June 2018. When they evaluated their business, the young entrepreneurs wrote, “We worked really hard to make a difference in the community by giving back to a local child with cancer. We want to show others that it doesn’t matter if you are young — you can still help others. It’s not about making money for yourself, it’s about putting a smile on someone else’s face.” Total revenue for L&H’s Pucker Stand — including lemonade sales, other revenue and tips — was $390.75. The business’ net profit was $340.75. The business partners saved $70.37 per partner for their national dance competition. They donated $200.00 to their young friend with brain cancer.
Young entrepreneurs were encouraged to set financial goals and start a business plan for their lemonade stand. Lola Huber of Lolamade Lemonade earned first place in the Best Tasting Contest.
“We just don’t teach our kids that stuff anymore,” said parent and mentor Mindi McKechnie. “When you go into a store, they just assume, ‘Hey, I have all this money to spend,’ but if you look at the cost and break things down, I think it’s good for kids to know in all reality what does it cost to afford something. There’s always going to be that overhead that you have to pay. It’s a good lesson in math.” Chamber Connection | 5
FEATURE As a bonus, Mindi McKechnie said she was happy to get the two young entrepreneurs out of the house for the day: “They’re not stuck in the house. They’re not playing games. They haven’t been on their phones. They have had to get out of the tent and talk to people. We’ve done curbside. When it was kind of sprinkling, the customers would pull up and the girls would go out and take them their (lemonade).” Instead of setting up the lemonade stand in front of their house, youth are encouraged to partner with a business.
Area youth were encouraged to set up shop in front of area businesses to drive more traffic to their lemonade stands.
“They can set up shop outside their front door, but unless you live on 3rd street or Washington Street or Sunset Drive in Mandan, you don’t necessarily have the traffic,” Leingang said. Lemonade stands were spread across Bismarck-Mandan from store fronts on Main Street in Mandan to Kirkwood Mall in Bismarck. Susan Schwieters, owner of Lillian’s in Bismarck, was approached by brother and sister business partners to set up a lemonade stand in front of her business. “It was great fun to see these kids so fired up,” Schwieters said. “They knew what their breakeven point was when they started. They knew it was $53.00. We got started right away at 10:00am and at 11:00am they ran through my door (saying) ‘We’re already making a profit! We start to make a profit right now!’ The youth, not their parents or mentors, are encouraged to contact a business to procure a stand location. They need to negotiate the terms with the business — where they can set up so as not to impede customer traffic on a Saturday, when they will operate, whether they are only allowed to operate within business hours or can operate after hours. “Entrepreneurship is such an important part of BismarckMandan’s economy,” said Brian Ritter, President and CEO of Bismarck-Mandan Development Association. “We can create jobs by bringing new employers to Bismarck-Mandan. We can create jobs by growing the employers we have. But what better way to grow jobs than to ... grow them from the grassroots here in our community.” Ritter, along with local elected officials, Lemonade Day sponsors and Chamber board members, attended a bus tour of lemonade stands in Bismarck-Mandan.

“As a former business owner here in Bismarck, I think it’s great to get kids thinking in terms of profit and loss, which also translates to your own personal financial literacy,” said Nancy Guy, Bismarck City Commissioner. Bismarck City Commissioner Shawn Oban also joined Guy on the VIP lemonade tour bus. Oban’s day job is as a principal of a local elementary school.

www.bismarckmandan.com “Being an educator and recognizing the importance that our youth play in our community and our future,” Oban said, “I think that it is critically important that we come out and support them and these young entrepreneurs that are ... trying a new business. We need these young folks to stick around Bismarck-Mandan and use these ideas for our community.” Once the young entrepreneurs secure their location and select their hours of operation, they focus on their product. The Lemonade Day workbook guides them through lessons on profit margins. The profit margin of fresh-squeezed lemonade is different from frozen lemonade or powdered lemonade. Youth are encouraged to consider selling additional products such as candy, store-bought baked goods or, in the case of L&H’s Pucker Stand, homemade slime. The young entrepreneurs can get creative with their products. “These are the kids that are going to be leading our businesses,” said Cory Fong, Director of Communications and Public Affairs for MDU Resources. “These are our future business unit presidents. These are the future folks that are going to be leading MDU Resources and our family of companies. We want them to have those experiences early on to create that foundation that makes them want to go into business ... It’s about creating the future of our company, of our community.”
MDU Resources Group and Aetna were the Main Squeeze sponsors of Lemonade Day. “I honestly don’t think they learn a lot of these skills in school,” said Teresa Grothe, Director of Service Operations for Aetna. “If they’re not in a program like this, they don’t learn those skills until they’re quite a bit older.” The Lemonade Day curriculum walks young entrepreneurs through branding their stand. They consider a name, theme and decorations for their stands. All of this plays into choosing a brand identity and marketing their businesses. Kinsley Pritchett, 9, Kelbi Pritchett, 11, and Allison Unrath, 10, collaborated on their business, #Lemons4Life in Kirkwood Mall. In addition to designing their stand with advertising and marketing in mind, they walked around with cookie samples to attract customers to their stand. “Some people can’t say no to kids,” Kelbi Pritchett said. “And we had to use the charm,” Allison said. Young entrepreneurs fill out a business plan and a detailed budget, down to calculating the cost for each glass of lemonade sold. Based on this financial data, they calculate the number of cups of lemonade they need to sell to meet their goal. “It’s something that’s not taught in the education system,” said Molly Herrington, a Chamber board member from KLJ who participated in the VIP tour. “A lot of parents, unless they happen to be naturally entrepreneurial themselves, they don’t know how to teach those skills to their kids.”

If parents are investing in lemonade stands the Lemonade Day curriculum doesn’t want them to pay for all of the upfront costs as a gift. Parents are investors, and the young entrepreneurs need to pay back their business loans. Young entrepreneurs sign a business loan agreement with their investors. Chamber Connection | 7
FEATURE In Bismarck-Mandan’s first Lemonade Day, 360 young entrepreneurs registered for the program. Of those youth, 50 registered their stands on the official Lemonade Day map. “These are our future members,” Leingang said. “These are our future business leaders, business owners. These are our future city commissioners, governors. If we can empower them to do great things now, that’s a snowball effect.” The Bismarck-Mandan Chamber of Commerce plans to continue Lemonade Day, growing the program each year. “It’s the skill of imagination,” Bollinger said. “It’s the skill of creativity. It’s really building confidence in young people. If you have a great idea and you have a passion for something, you can create anything, and that’s the American Dream.” Youth are encouraged to secure business partners, whether that is a sibling, friend, parent, or other family member. INTERIM STUDIES ALIGN WITH CHAMBER PRIORITIES

The Government Affairs Committee, part of the BismarckMandan Chamber of Commerce, has been following topics under consideration during the 65th Legislative Interim. Three studies that were top priorities for the Government Affairs Committee have been selected for interim study.
Interim study: City expansion, taxation, and services Summary: Study how city growth and infill development affects property taxes, and evaluate the return on investment for state and community projects. Why is this study a priority? “We have a governor that’s talking a lot about Main Street Initiative, vertical growth,” said Sen. Dwight Cook, R-Mandan. “We need to understand, is there a different type of benefit to city taxpayers for programs that incent vertical growth versus horizontal growth or not. As it’s going to be a topic for discussion, we need to know as much about it as we can.” Why should the business community care about this study? “People should care because we want to see that these programs are effective,” said Rep. Jason Dockter, R-Bismarck. “People want to see that the downtown and different areas are revitalized, but a lot of people feel these programs shouldn’t be on the backs of the taxpayers. Hopefully we get good results that these program are giving back a rate of return to the state, and if they’re not we need to take a serious look at getting rid of them in the next session.”
Interim study: Alternatives to incarceration
Summary: Study alternatives to incarceration, with a focus on the behavioral health needs of individuals in the criminal justice system. Why is this study a priority? “Because it costs a lot of money to lock someone up for a crime,” said Rep. Karen Karls, R-Bismarck. “It costs so much per day to incarcerate someone. That cost is paid usually buy the county where the crime occurred, and that cost is absorbed by the counties, that cost of incarceration. What the Council of State Governments study is saying is that it’s more cost-effective to treat non-violent offenders than to incarcerate them. We just want to find out if this is the case. Why should the business community care about this study? “Every time we do something from a statewide level that creates the possibility of reducing crime or created the possibility of reducing an individual from going to jail, that could impact the business community in the long run,” said Rep. Pat Heinert, R-Bismarck. “We’ll use a theft charge as an example. If we raise the dollar amount before a theft charge becomes a felony that affects every business in the community.”
Interim study: Transportation funding
Summary: Study the funding mechanisms and options available to the Department of Transportation, political subdivisions, and public transportation providers, for road construction, maintenance, other transportation infrastructure needs, and transit services. Why is this study a priority? “There’s concern about federal funding and how those dollars are dropping, but the needs for the roads are still there,” said Rep. Rick Becker, R-Bismarck. “In the 2015 session and interim we were given information that the needs for preventative maintenance were going to be on the increase ... How can we best fund things? The funding for roads is very complicated. The (political) subdivisions have less money due to the decrease in oil price.” Chamber Connection | 9

Q: Tell us about yourself and your role within the organization. A: My name is Jon Simmers. I moved back to Bismarck a little over 10 years ago to become the CEO of Bismarck Aero Center. I work every day to provide a strong vision, leadership and strategic planning to keep our organization pointed in the right direction for continued growth and sustainability. I have also made it a priority to continually develop our company culture and facilitate a positive, family-friendly work environment for all my co-workers. We are an organization that is filled with passionate people that want to be here and love what they do.
Q: Tell us about yourself and your role within the organization. A: Bismarck Aero Center was founded by my father, Bob Simmers, in 1990 as Aircraft Management Services. Bob partnered with Co-owner Mike Aarestad in 2002 and started to expand their aviation services in the Bismarck/Mandan community. Over the next 15 years, the business went from a six-person team with only two aircraft hangars, to now a 45-person team, three offices, eight hangars at the Bismarck Airport and two additional hangars at the Mandan Airport. Today, we offer professional flight instruction, contract pilot services, 24/7 aircraft refueling, maintenance, avionics and aircraft storage. We are really a one-stop destination for all private aviation needs. 10 | Chamber Connection
Q: What differentiates Bismarck Aero Center from its competitors? A: Along with all the extra little things that we do, I believe it’s our people that make Bismarck Aero Center stand out from our competitors. Anyone can provide basic services but it’s the passionate people, those who really love what they do, that turn even the simplest requests into a great experience. From going the extra mile to help customers to providing a simple educational aviation lesson to a local group of kids, our folks love the industry and are empowered to share their love for it. This positivity creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere that is contagious to be around. It’s how we have been able to build relationships and earn the trust of over 85% of local aviation customers. Q: Have there been any monumental changes in the industry that you’ve had to deal with? A: As almost everyone has heard by now, UAS or Unmanned Aerial Systems are the new craze in the aviation business. In February of 2016, the United States hit a monumental change in the industry. That month, the FAA had around 320,000 manned aircraft registered with them and around 325,000 unmanned aircraft registered. Airplanes have been around for decades and within months, UAS had easily overtaken them. Now, the manned aircraft registered is still around 300,000 and the UAS count is over 700,000. This enormous growth has been a fun challenge and something we look forward to seeing develop in the industry.
www.bismarckmandan.com Q: What industry trends are taking place? A: Aviation is already the safest way to travel in today’s world. With advancements in technology, aviation safety is being taken to a whole new level. For example, aircraft manufacturer, Cirrus Aircraft, has successfully created an airplane that has a parachute system built into the airframe to help pilots in emergencies. This system has already saved over 140 lives. Another big safety advancement that we are seeing in aviation is the transition to better aircraft tracking technology. These systems will soon be required to be installed in all aircraft. Their main purpose is to help the air traffic control towers and other aircraft, more accurately track where aircraft are in the sky at all times. Thus, allowing all airplanes to keep their distance from each other and hopefully eliminating in air collisions.
Q: How has the growth of Bismarck-Mandan impacted Bismarck Aero Center? A: Taking a look at the industry, it is easy to see that our communities’ growth helped the local Bismarck and Mandan airports grow as well. It is also true that this local growth might not have been possible without the investments made in these airports. Both airports are great tools to help stimulate activity and drive business to our cities. Our local leaders had great foresight when they saw the need for good infrastructure and decided to create quality aviation access close by.
From a Bismarck Aero Center perspective, we have been fortunate to grow with the Bismarck/Mandan community and the aviation activity that it has brought to both the Bismarck and Mandan airports. When entrepreneurs can come to a community and thrive, they start to look at how aviation can be used to take their business to the next level. Some work to expand to more customers all across North Dakota or even across the country. While others look to make business meetings in Williston or Grand Forks, and still be home for supper that night. When the time comes, we strive to be ready to help these professionals take advantage of all benefits that aviation has to offer.
Q: Bismarck Aero Center became a member in 2006, why do you continue to renew each year? A: It is important to our organization that we support the Chamber of Commerce. Over the years, we have seen the immense value of what the folks at the Chamber bring to our community and to us as a member. If we want Bismarck/Mandan to continue to grow, it is important that the Chamber receives the support they need to help make our community great.
It is also really invaluable what the Chamber does for entrepreneurial education for our community youth. My 5-year-old daughter recently got to partake in the Lemonade Day. She not only had a lot of fun doing it, but she also learned something about having a business and interacting with people. As a proud parent, it was a great for me and my wife to see her learning firsthand through that experience. Q: What should Chamber members know about Bismarck Aero Center that may assist them? A: The most important thing that members should know is how easy it can be to get involved in aviation and the benefits it brings to any type of business, large or small. The best part is always how easy it was for them to get started in aviation and how quickly it becomes a passion. Bismarck Aero Center is ready to help businesses that are looking to take that next step and assist them achieve their goals.
Q: What does the future of Bismarck Aero Center look like and the industry as a whole look like to you? A: The future of Bismarck Aero Center is strong. We have been steadily growing for years and look to do what we can to continue that pattern while providing the highest level of products and services to our customers. As demand for aviation grows, we would like to continue our growth locally and be good stewards for those coming into our community.

HEATON WINS DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS AWARD
Rev. Gary Heaton was awarded the Leadership Bismarck-Mandan Alumni Association Distinguished Alumnus Award for 2017 at the Leadership BismarckMandan graduation on May 24. Each year an award is presented to a past graduate of the Leadership Bismarck-Mandan program who has used leadership knowledge and skills to benefit Bismarck-Mandan.
Heaton graduated from Leadership Bismarck-Mandan in 2005 and was part of the group that created Welcome House, Inc., which connects local families with temporary shelter and supportive resources that lead to self-sufficiency. Since that time, Heaton has served on the Welcome House board of directors for more than five years where he spent three years as Vice President and then President. Heaton has been a Chaplain for Sanford Health since 2008. He was called as pastor and developer at Living Water Lutheran Church in Mandan from 2000-2008. He also served as the Executive Director for AID, Inc. from 2004-2008.

In addition to these remarkable commitments, Gary has been involved in prison ministry as a volunteer at the North Dakota State Penitentiary since 1997, a member of the Dacotah Lions and past officer Rev. Gary Heaton was at a loss for words when he was shocked to win the 2017 Leadership Bismarck-Mandan of the Council Alumni Association Distinguished Alumnus Award. of United Way Agencies. He also was a member of the team that wrote the 10 year plan to end long-term homelessness in Bismarck-Mandan.

ACCEPTING LEADERSHIP APPLICATIONS FOR 2017-2018
Leadership Bismarck-Mandan is now accepting applications for the class of 2018. Up to 18 applicants will be accepted into the program. Participants delve into today’s most compelling issues. Community experts create issue day sessions on topics relevant to the Bismarck-Mandan area, including: economic development, energy, natural resources, agriculture, human services, law enforcement, military, emergency services, arts, leisure, education, legislation, political involvement, faith, ethics and values. Most issue days are 1/2 day. Highlights of the program include a full day energy tour of Coal Country, a full day retreat and a graduation ceremony.
Following the issue days, the class will divide into groups, select a community project about which they are passionate and work to make that field project into reality. TOTAL RESOURCE CAMPAIGN IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER
We are one month away from signaling the Chamber’s 16-week Total Resource Campaign (TRC)! During this campaign we take the time to introduce business members to the value of their Chamber membership and it is a way for you as members to select the programs and advertising opportunities that are most profitable for your business. This is an opportunity to ensure you are getting a return on your investment and marketing your business to the fullest. Renewing sponsors have the right of first refusal for their sponsorships from the previous year; this is what we call the “renewal period”. The 2018 renewal period will begin on Tuesday, August 1st and end on Tuesday, September 5th. Starting on September 6th, all sponsorships that have not been renewed are up for grabs by anyone, so be sure to return all renewal contracts in on time to secure your sponsorships for 2018. The TRC campaign will conclude on Monday, November 13th. If you are a member business that hasn’t sponsored an event in the past, you will be approached to discuss involvement opportunities and the benefits of event sponsorships. The Chamber has a wide variety of events and there truly is something for everyone. This method is designed to make sponsorship easier for you. Also, our annual TRC allows the Chamber staff to focus and budget for our upcoming programs, promotional materials, job creation and retention, advocate for businesses, and ensure prosperity and economic growth. PERFECT DAY FORE A CHAMBER GOLF SCRAMBLE
Last month on Monday, June 12th, the Chamber hosted our 27th Annual Chamber Golf Scramble at Hawktree Golf Club. You plan and plan, and the next thing you know it has come and gone, but one thing we could not plan for is the beautiful weather we received. We also, could not have asked for a better group of members golfing! Thank you to the 32 teams of individuals that spent their Monday outside the office for a day on the greens. It was a fun-filled day of food, drinks, games, and of course - golf!

CHAMBER COMMITTEE HONORS TEACHERS FOR 30TH YEAR
The Excellence in Business and Education Committee of the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber of Commerce have finished presenting this year’s Outstanding Teacher of the Year Awards.
For the 30th year, the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber of Commerce has honored educators in both Bismarck and Mandan on primary, secondary, and post-secondary education levels. With the help of Scheels Sports, the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber of Commerce and its Excellence in Business and Education committee are proud to continue this tradition of celebrating teachers in our area. After receiving 55 nominations, 50 educators accepted the nomination, and 47 qualified for the Crystal Apple, a symbol of excellence in education and outstanding achievement within their profession. Out of those 47, the committee selects five recipients of the Crystal Apple on three levels; Primary Educator in Bismarck and Mandan, Secondary Educator in Bismarck and Mandan, and one Post-Secondary Educator. KUPPER AUTOMOTIVE PRESENTS CUSTOM IV POLE STANDS TO SANFORD CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
Kupper Automotive teamed up with Sanford Health to create a new way for children to receive IV treatments. Instead of sitting in a room to receive treatments, which can take up to five hours, children now have the option of “riding” on one of six custom IV pole stands, created by employees of Kupper Automotive and decorated in interactive themes for the children. Staff from Kupper Automotive presented five stands to Sanford employees on Monday, May 15.
The idea came about when staff from the Sanford Health Foundation brought up the idea to Bob Kupper and employees as they Kupper Automotive employees presented Sanford Health staff with were visiting the Sanford Children’s Hospital five custom IV Pole Stands. delivering items for patients during a “Day it Forward” campaign on February 29, 2016. Through a few conversations, the two organizations were able to come up with a stand idea that would fit on an IV pole, the stands were created, and Kupper employees chose different themes for each of the stands. In October 2016, Kupper presented the first stand to the hospital and it has been highly utilized and requested by young patients. “Being able to provide these unique stands for Sanford is just one small thing that we are able to do, but it is certainly the little things that can make the biggest difference during a hard time. We are happy to spread even a small amount of joy to children as they are receiving treatments. Capital Credit Union donated $750 to the Bismarck Optimist Club in its fifth annual Avenue of Flags, in which club members line a section of State Street with 120 American flags on Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and Veteran’s Day. The display stretches from I-94 to the south entrance of the Capitol building.

On April 28, international Pay it Forward Day, Starion Bank employees across North Dakota placed more than 600 “Kindness Cash” wallets with $20 cash and instructions asking those who found the wallets to use the money to pay it forward. “We believe it is so important for a business to give back to the community that it’s one of Starion’s core values,” explained Craig Larson, Starion CEO and chairman of the board. “Kindness Cash is a rewarding project for our employees and got each community involved. Together we inspired our neighbors to pay it forward and positively impact the lives of others.” Wallet finders were asked to submit to the bank the story of how they paid it forward via social media or email. Those who did so by May 12 were entered into a random drawing to have $250 donated to the charity of the winner’s choice. A second drawing was held for the non-profit organizations who received Kindness Cash. The organizations were entered in a survey for the public vote to determine which would receive a $250 donation. The winner of the random drawing was Alicia Glynn of Ellendale. She found a Kindness Cash wallet and used $20 to buy seeds to plant vegetables and flowers in the garden at the Prince of Peace Care Center. Students from Ellendale High School helped residents plant the garden. Keeping with the “theme” of her wallet, Glynn chose to have the $250 from the drawing donated to the care center.

$210,000 GRANT SUPPORTS LAUNCH OF EMERGENCY GRANT PROGRAM AT UNIVERSITY OF MARY
University of Mary has received a $210,000 Dash Emergency Grant from Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation & Affiliates to operate and maintain a student emergency aid program. Emergency grants will be integrated into the college’s overall student success strategy with the goal of improving retention and completion rates. University of Mary serves students from diverse backgrounds, and a situation that might be a headache for one can be a major financial crisis for another. If a student is already struggling to make ends meet, an unexpected car repair or medical bill might cause that student to withdraw from college. “Thanks to the Dash Emergency Grant, University of Mary has the resources to provide modest emergency grants to our students in times of greatest need,” said Dr. Jayne Hardy, director of the Student Success Center at Mary. The student-focused services of the Student Success Center create an excellent channel to identify students in need of assistance and the Dash Emergency Grant will provide a way to help eligible students overcome the hurdle and continue toward their academic goals.”
University of Mary will begin making student emergency grants in fall 2017. Students will complete an application detailing their financial emergency. A University of Mary committee will review the application, and expenses up to $1,000 will be paid within two business days of approval. By quickly removing financial distractions, students can refocus on their studies and continue toward graduation. University of Mary is one of the first four-year colleges to receive a Dash Emergency Grant from Great Lakes. A combined $7.2 million in grants was awarded to 32 colleges in Arkansas, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, Ohio and Wisconsin. Dash Emergency Grants for four-year colleges build on the success two-year colleges have achieved since Great Lakes began supporting emergency grant programs in 2012. These colleges report students who receive emergency grants stay in school at better rates and graduate in larger numbers. “We’re pleased to extend our Dash Emergency Grant to the University of Mary and other four-year colleges to help more at-risk students overcome financial obstacles to completion,” said Richard D. George, President and Chief Executive Officer of Great Lakes.
