he term ‘new normal’ is almost cliché at this point, but that doesn’t mean it’s inaccurate. In almost every industry that comprises our local economy, we’ve had to make changes to our work habits, office environments and even our personal interactions in light of the coronavirus outbreak. However, there are signs all around us that we’re returning to that ‘new normal’ and that includes here at the Chamber EDC. First, later this month we’ll once again host E2: Educators Experience. E2 is one of the Chamber EDC’s workforce development programs that is actually geared towards our educators; not our students. Think of it as an abbreviated internship for teachers, counselors and more by which they spend a week in half-day workshops with business community leaders from multiple industries learning all about the educational requirements in those particular fields. The idea is that by giving this information straight to educators, they can then take that information with them back into the classroom and share it with their students as they consider their own career paths. Speaking of workforce, we’re hosting the 2020 Workforce Summit on Tuesday, July 28 at the Radisson Hotel in Bismarck. Employers, educators and professionals are all encouraged to attend and learn from keynote speaker Bob Randall on “Meeting the Needs of the Modern Workplace.” In addition to the keynote speaker, you can participate in an expanded selection of workshops designed to provide you with insight into various workforce opportunities and best practices. And throughout the summer, we’ll be hosting installments of our Business Development Series (BDS) that all members can participate in. The BDS is really a resource for our members because it’s a local and readily accessible means of professional development. I personally have taken part in the Series in the past and would encourage everyone to do the same. What’s more is that the organization has taken your feedback and started offering the BDS both in-person and virtually so whether you’re a member that has the ability to attend in-person or you’re someone currently telecommuting, you can take advantage of it. While nobody planned on or wished the coronavirus outbreak to happen, obviously, please know that the Chamber EDC has worked very hard to adapt to the changes it has brought about and that’s reflected in how different our event offerings look from even just one year ago. And on top of these changes, the organization continues work on a number of ongoing efforts, including the 2021 Legislative Agenda. A draft of the agenda has been prepared and is now being vetted with both private and public stakeholders so that we can share it with our Legislative Delegation early this Fall. We’ll take their feedback, combine it with what we get from others and then finalize it prior the December Organizational Session so that we’re in the best possible position when the Legislature convenes in January. Finally and most importantly, thank you for your continued support of the Chamber EDC!

THE ENTREPRENEURS’ ROUNDTABLE By Cathryn Sprynczynatyk Entrepreneurship is thriving on the prairie. From events like 1 Million Cups and Mandan’s Business Pitch Challenge to accolades being named in the Top 10 Best Small Cities to Start a Business by WalletHub and in the Top 50 Best Places for Small Business Startups by CNN Money, everything points to fertile entrepreneurial soil in Bismarck-Mandan. Connection magazine posed the same set of questions to five entrepreneurs to create an entrepreneurs’ roundtable. The entrepreneurs interviewed include Marlo Anderson, Founder of National Day Calendar; Brady Wolf, Owner of 2 Vets Moving Co.; Guy Halvorson, Beef Sales Director of Armor Animal Health (formerly Stockmen’s Supply); and Sandy and Steven Jacobson, Owners of Brick Oven Bakery.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESS? Anderson: “Because nobody would hire me. I have always been an entrepreneur — I don’t know any other way. I haven’t worked for anybody else since maybe two years out of high school. I’ve always had some type of business going on. As I’ve aged, I understand my love of startups. There is just something about starting up a company, that excitement, that adrenaline. I’m not afraid to dip my toe in the pond and test the waters so to speak.” Steven Jacobson: “I wanted to have a restaurant when I was younger. I went to school for business management geared toward hospitality and the restaurant industry. It never came to fruition. We fortunately had the time and finances to be able to do it (now). I like baking more than just cooking. A bakery seemed like a smaller, more manageable endeavor to start with. Maybe someday we’ll rent the space next door and open a restaurant.”

ARMOR ANIMAL HEALTH Proprietor: Guy Halvorson, Beef Sales Director Founded: 1956 Employees: 14 in Mandan; 145 in the United States How would you describe your business in 30 words or less? “We’re a premier animal health supplier in the Upper Midwest that strives to help our customers be successful.”

4 4 Connection

Wolf: “I went straight out of high school into the military. I was there for four and a half years and was injured… I came back here and worked some remedial jobs here in town trying to figure out what I was going to do… I worked for five years at an oilfield company until we started having kids. I wasn’t able to spend as much time with the family as I would like. I was moving part-time on my days off helping friends and family… We decided to make it official and put a name behind it. My general manager was getting out of the military. He was in the same platoon with me, same unit; we deployed multiple times together… It started off as a part-time thing. It got so busy I had to leave my fulltime employment in the oilfield, plus this kept me home most nights. And we’ve never looked back.” Halvorson: “Stockmen’s Supply started in 1956 as a supply outlet and veterinary clinic in West Fargo… I’ve been managing the business since 2008. It was acquired by ANIMART, LLC (in 2016) … We are in the middle of a name change to Armor Animal Health. ANIMART, LLC has acquired five different regional animal health suppliers, forming one company to become the No. 3 supplier in the animal health industry.”

2 VETS MOVING CO. Proprietor: Brady Wolf, Owner Founded: 2016 Employees: 27 How would you describe your business in 30 words or less? “We are working every day to provide a better service for our community. We do a lot of moving, but we also help people move for remodels, furniture delivery services.”

WHAT SETS YOUR BUSINESS APART FROM OTHERS IN YOUR INDUSTRY? Halvorson: “We have a lab in Portland, Ore. Within two days, we can have lab samples there and one day to get the results back. Usually within three days we have the results back.”

Steven Jacobson: “All of our breads are fermented sourdough style. We have a giant wood-fired oven shipped over from France to keep it as traditional as possible. That is the only oven like that in the United States. There are only two companies in France that make that style oven, and they had never shipped one to the United States.”

CALENDAR OF EVENTS

Anderson: “We have hundreds and hundreds of (competitors) that have sprung up because of us. To this point, we do not have a salesperson on this team. Everything we have done here has been inbound. To me that has been extremely fascinating. We get to pick our clientele so to speak.”

NATIONAL DAY CALENDAR Proprietor: Marlo Anderson, Founder Founded: 2013 Employees: 15 How would you describe your business in 30 words or less? “We are where the world gathers to celebrate every day.” Other Businesses: Zoovio, Awesome Two Products, Saf Power, Q1 Network, Pakkage

WHAT ARE KEY MILESTONES SINCE THE FOUNDING OF YOUR BUSINESS? Sandy Jacobson: “It got busy really fast. We really thought we would ease into it and get bigger and bigger. It started out big right away.”

HOW HAS COVID-19 AFFECTED YOUR BUSINESS? Halvorson: “(COVID-19) has delayed shipments in and out. Otherwise it has been business as normal. Farms and ranches didn’t get to stop for COVID-19, so we don’t either.”

Anderson: “You have to listen to the people who are your customers. I didn’t want to print a calendar. I was 100 percent against doing this. I’m a geek. It’s free online. Why in the world would you spend money on a printed calendar? … Sometimes that path of listening to your customer base is the path to monetization. At the time we were struggling with how to monetize this. That very obvious path was a path we were resistant to.”

Wolf: “Our growth rate has been so substantial year after year. It’s hard to say what it was due to. I think the reason we are as busy as we are -- mid-March thru now -- is because of interest rates being as low as they are. A lot of people are buying houses who may not have thought of doing it before. That’s some of the feedback we’ve gotten from some of our clients. They weren’t planning on buying another house. Our dollar is going to carry farther than any other time, so let’s do it now.”

Wolf: “We are three and a half years in. We have doubled or close to doubled in size every year for the last three years. We’re hoping to continue that growth going forward. We’re slammed for work right now.”

6 4 Connection

Sandy Jacobson: “In order to avoid people coming into the building, we took out a solid window and displayed bread in there. We picked up a Pella window slider, put in in there so we could have a walk-up window. People love the window so much, we’re not getting rid of it… Bismarck has just embraced us more than we ever expected. It went well. We were able to keep a couple of employees on. Within four weeks, we had most of our front employees on. After the first week of our window, we had all of our bakers at full staff because we were just so busy.”

CONNECTION | FEATURE WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE ENTREPRENEURSHIP CLIMATE OF BISMARCK-MANDAN? Wolf: “I think North Dakota as a whole is a great state to start a business... It’s not something you hear about frequently in the news — stores closing up shop, having to close their doors here in town. You don’t see that a lot here as much as in other states.” Anderson: “We have a great startup culture here — 1 Million Cups, the Capitol is on our backyard. We have a governor who is business centric. We have the Bank of North Dakota. We have great resources around here. Anyone interested in starting businesses has that great base. Say you need a loan. It’s so easy to hop online, but there is something about face-to-face and developing those relationships that is so key.” Halvorson: “I think the business climate is very good in Bismarck-Mandan. There is a great support within the business community to help each other thrive per say.”

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER ENTREPRENEURS? Anderson: “Start. If you have an idea, you should start exploring. There are plenty of people around here who are willing to help you. You’ll find out in that starting phase if it’s an economically viable thing to do. You’ll probably find out in a few weeks whether it’s something you can move forward with.” Halvorson: “Take it a day at a time, but don’t lose sight of your visions, and don’t give up. It takes a lot of sacrifice.” Steven Jacobson: “Do you research and talk to anyone you can in the industry. Ask around. Some people are willing to talk to you. We could have avoided some mistakes had we known more about it going into it. If you’re a local, independent-owned restaurant or bakery, they’re going to talk to you.”

BRICK OVEN BAKERY Proprietors: Steven and Sandy Jacobson, Owners Founded: 2019 Employees: 12 How would you describe your business in 30 words or less? “We’re an artisanal bakery creating scratch-made pastries and breads in the traditional French fashion.”

Wolf: “Just go for it.”

The Pier Bar & Grill have been Chamber EDC members since 2016.

Tiffany Galpin THE PIER BAR & GRILL Tell us about yourself and your role within your business. A: Hello, my name is Tiffany Galpin, and my husband and I own the Pier Bar and Grill.

8 4 Connection

MEMBER SINCE 2016

Briefly tell us the history behind The Pier Bar and Grill? A: Way back when the Pier used to be home to a riverside gas station on land and on the water. It was also a home for fine dining when the original owner had it. Since then there has been two other owners besides my husband and me. When the previous owners had the restaurant, they split it in half closing the north end of the building. When my husband and I took over in 2016, we reopened the other side and made the restaurant whole again. Since we took the restaurant over, we have done numerous upgrades to the building and continue to make it a welcoming and fun place to come to any time of the year.

CONNECTION | MEMBER PROFILE How has the growth of Bismarck-Mandan impacted The Pier? A: Since my husband and I only took over operations four years ago, we missed the pre-boom of the Bismarck/ Mandan area. Due to that, we have a hard time comparing what we are currently experiencing versus what previous owners have gone through. We are thankful that each year we have owned the Pier that we have developed new relationships with our guests and neighbors, therefore our business has grown each year we have been here. What trends are taking place in your industry? A: This year the new trend across the board in the restaurant bar industry are the guidelines we are currently following for the COVID-19 pandemic. Besides that, we have been in full swing since reopening and have been enjoying a typical busy summer on the river. Have there been any monumental changes within your industry that you’ve had to deal with? A: Again, the main monumental change we have experienced has been with COVID-19 guidelines and having to be closed back from mid-March to the beginning of May and now being reopened and keeping up with the ever changing guidelines and the craziness that the summer months entail.

What does the future of The Pier look like, and the industry as a whole look like to you? A: The future for us is always looking forward to gaining more new relationships with our guests and neighbors to continue to expand our business in the fall and winter months and continue to enjoy the fun mayhem of the summer season on the river. Our belief is that each year the industry will continue to grow with us and throughout the Bismarck/Mandan area. The Pier Bar and Grill became a member in 2016, why do you continue to renew each year? A: We continue to renew because of the Chambers’ connection to the community and their continued support for businesses like ours throughout the Bismarck/Mandan community. What should other Chamber EDC members know about The Pier that may assist them? A: Other members should be aware that we are open year-round. After Labor Day we offer dinner specials on Friday and Saturday nights throughout the fall and winter. We also have a room upstairs to rent out for meetings and gatherings for a small rental fee from Labor Day to Memorial Day.

AVAILABLE LOCAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS On June 11th, the Bismarck Vision Fund approved a request from Cloverdale to provide a portion of the local match for the Bank of North Dakota’s PACE Interest BuyDown program. Earlier in March, the same project was approved by the Mandan Growth Fund for the other part of the local portion. While the project is an incredible win for Bismarck-Mandan and a unique opportunity to partner these two programs, we want to highlight here our local business assistance programs in the Bismarck Vision Fund and Mandan Growth Fund. Both the Bismarck Vision Fund and the Mandan Growth Fund are local business assistance programs that help to finance or offset costs of a start-up, expansion or redevelopment project in the community.

The Mandan Growth Fund, much like the Vision Fund, is governed by a board made up of nine members and also provides recommendations to the city commission. The Growth Fund, has defined programs that focus on Mandan needs and wants. The Storefront Improvement Program is a popular Growth Fund program and provides up to a $30,000 forgivable loan to assist in offsetting costs that are incurred when rehabbing a building façade. This program is limited to projects within the downtown corridor and fringe district. Another popular program is the Retail Incentive Program that provides up to $5 per square foot of operating space, not to exceed $20,000, to businesses that fill a gap in the city’s market profile and meet other program criteria.

The Bismarck Vision Fund is governed by a five-member board and provides recommendations to the Bismarck City Commission. Recently the Vision Fund has mainly provided the local match of BND’s PACE Interest Buy-Down program however, in the past the Vision Fund has been utilized to provide more customized funding options to assist expanding projects.

To learn more about these programs and others that may be available contact Nathan at the Chamber EDC office.

UNITED TRIBES TECHNICAL COLLEGE INCREASES IMPACT All of us here in Bismarck-Mandan are familiar with United Tribes Technical College (UTTC), their campus and of course, the annual UTTC International Powwow. However, what many may not know is that for the past 50 years, UTTC has served over ten thousand Native American students from more than 75 federally recognized Tribes across the nation. BSC RECEIVES USDA FUNDS TO SUPPORT AGRICULTURE WORKFORCE TRAINING North Dakota Senator John Hoeven, chairman of the U.S. Senate Agriculture Appropriations Committee, announced last week that the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) has awarded $458,839 to Bismarck State College to support hands-on education opportunities and workforce training for students interested in becoming a custom applicator. “BSC appreciates the USDA for providing this grant that will allow us to meet the growing challenges of ensuring our agricultural workforce has the right, highly technical skillsets,” says BSC President Larry C. Skogen. “Our agriculturalists feed the world, and we at BSC are proud to help provide that industry with its needed workforce.” BSC will use the funds for the creation of an online, eight-credit certificate of completion in custom applicator training. The program will be available to students starting in the fall of 2021. “This certificate will develop students in the areas of applicator equipment operation, crop production, applied math and precision agriculture,” says BSC Associate Professor of Agriculture, Technology and Natural Resources Lindsey Novak. “The online delivery provides an opportunity for local and rural individuals looking to begin a career in agriculture.”

Twelve awardees were selected from more than 30 applications. BSC and Dakota College at Bottineau were the only two North Dakota recipients of funds. “It’s vital our students have access to proper certification and training for their careers,” said Hoeven. “Today’s funding will support workforce training opportunities at both community colleges to provide students with experience and proper certification pertaining to careers involving agribusinesses.” These awards are made possible through the Agricultural and Food Research Initiative’s (AFRI) Agricultural Workforce Training program priority area. This is the first time that the NIFA has specifically targeted community colleges to increase training opportunities for the food and agricultural workforce sector. “Community colleges provide substantial workforce development throughout the nation,” said NIFA Director Scott Angle. “These awards will lead to workers earning a twoyear degree or an industry-accepted credential, which will open better job opportunities in the food and agricultural sector.”

BPS PLANNING FOR NEW SCHOOLS AND SCHOOL REOPENING IN AUGUST

We asked and you answered. Bismarck Public Schools conducted a survey this spring to determine if the community could support a 3-phase Facilities Plan and the response was overwhelmingly favorable! More than 1,400 people took the survey and 87% supported this plan.

Let’s show the world what we can do together. Day by day. Project by project. Together we’re building better places that bring the world closer.

Phase 1 Construct 2 new elementary schools in Bismarck that will address capacity issues at 8 elementary schools and reduce the use of portable classrooms. The plan is to open these schools in the fall of 2022. Phase 2 Finish a Long Range Facilities Plan; monitor 2021 Legislative funding for school facilities.

Phase 3 Build Legacy High School’s 3rd wing, add space to Lincoln Elementary, and implement our Long Range Facilities Plan which will address all BPS schools. The Bismarck Public School Board approved the 3 phase plan and BPS has begun the planning process for the new K-5 schools. We are working to find sites for these two schools as well as architects and construction managers. We are also working on a fall school reentry plan following COVID-19 guidelines. At the time I am writing this, we anticipate the Governor will give more guidance about a fall school restart sometime after the 4th of July. He is reviewing data from the “soft” summer school opening across the state. Bismarck Public Schools is experiencing some exciting times as we plan for new schools, implement of a new Strategic Plan, and get ready to welcome kids back to school in August! Enjoy the summer and we will see you soon.

KLJ AWARDED 2019 OUTSTANDING PROJECT DESIGN KLJ was recently awarded the 2019 Outstanding Project Design Award by North Dakota Society of Professional Engineers (NDSPE) for work on the Sheyenne Street/I-94 Interchange Reconstruction project in West Fargo, ND. The award recognizes an engineering firm in the state of North Dakota and is based on engineering design content of a project completed or under construction in the current year. Consideration is given to how the project employs innovative or state of the art engineering practices making the project unique.

KLJ served as the prime consultant on the project, working closely with the City of West Fargo and the North Dakota Department of Transportation. The five-mile corridor of Sheyenne Street required some distinct design solutions which included capacity and safety enhancements, pedestrian and bicycle improvements, traffic calming measures and an innovative interchange solution. The team developed a Modified Single Point Urban Interchange (MSPUI) design to address the unique travel patterns of Sheyenne Street. Construction of the project was completed in November 2019 and resulted in 60 percent less traffic delay and reduced total crash potential by 60 percent. Overall, this one-of-a-kind design, improves traffic flow on this highly traveled corridor.

Mindsets and behaviors are changing the way people are consuming media. Traditional media outlets such as newspapers, radio stations, and broadcast TV programs are still effective at reaching certain audiences. However, online, digital, and mobile platforms such as social media, streaming video, e-commerce websites, and augmented/virtual reality are critical components of any organization’s future marketing activities. Furthermore, the pandemic has required organizations to increase their communication efforts. Business leaders can’t assume that people know how their organizations are changing to meet the needs of their target markets in a post-COVID world. Now, more than ever, business leaders need to deploy the core elements of strategic marketing – ideation, innovation and communication. Such changes require business leaders to be open to new ideas, to be willing to take innovative risks, and to communicate in ways that speak to people’s ever-changing needs.
