CONNECTION | CHAIR'S CORNER elationships with the elected officials who represent our area is critical to all aspects of the Chamber EDC’s mission statement that reads, “Advocating for business. Fostering economic growth. Shaping the future of our community.”
The June primary brought changes to those who represent us and as always, we continue to reach out to those officials to enhance our relationships and provide a deeper understanding of the role of the Chamber both as an advocate and a resource. Four seats on the Chamber EDC’s Board of Directors are dedicated to members of our City and County Commission. So as those faces change, I want to thank those who have served: • •
Thank you to Bismarck Mayor Steve Bakken and Mandan City Commissioner Amber Larson for their time and commitment to our board, our organization and our community. I also want to thank Bismarck City Commissioner Nancy Guy, Bismack School Board Members Matt Sagsveen & Karl Lembke, Mandan School Board Members Ross Munns & Tim Rector and Mandan Park Board Members Jason Arenz & Chad Hatzenbuhler for their service to the community. All these positions take time, effort, and a thick skin, and I appreciate all who step up to serve.
While this was a primary election for legislative races, retirements and primary results have already created a significant turnover of seasoned legislators which will change our area delegation and the landscape of the entire legislature. We are building relationships with all remaining candidates just as we have built them with the legislators already serving the community. I should also note that while positions on our City Commissions, School and Park Boards are decided in June’s primary election, those at the County & State Level won’t be decided until the November’s general election. That means you’ll see another round of campaigning in the Fall for those county, legislative, and state-wide positions. Finally, I want to address my first-time experience being on the ballot. My campaign to represent District 47 in the House of Representatives was unsuccessful, but invaluable. I learned quickly the challenges of wearing multiple hats and more specifically, ensuring I didn’t carry my campaign into my role as Chamber EDC Board Chair. Most importantly though, I experienced the amazing support of friends, colleagues, and strangers alike who recognize the challenges and commitment it takes to run. Much has been said about the incivility of our current political climate, but there is a tremendous amount of appreciation for those willing to serve as well; as there should be. So in addition to thanking those who stepped up and sought office during this election, I want to thank all who serve and/or are on the ballot in November. Leadership is the foundation for success, and we must continue to strengthen that foundation in our community and our state.

THE ENTREPRENEUR ROUNDTABLE By Cathryn Sprynczynatyk Entrepreneurship is thriving on the prairie. From events like 1 Million Cups to Mandan’s Business Pitch Challenge, everything points to fertile entrepreneurial soil in Bismarck-Mandan. Connection magazine posed the same set of questions to six entrepreneurs to create an entrepreneurs’ roundtable. The entrepreneurs interviewed include Evan and Ganya Anderson, Mad Scientist and Resident Geek of Gizmonics; Jose Sanchez, Owner of Unitech Pest Control; Nicole Gagner, Owner of Meadowlark Mercantile; Renee Murrish, Owner of Signature Events; and Jed Geer, Owner of Farmers Union Insurance.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESSES?
Ganya Anderson: Our fathers are both farmers and ranchers. We were raised in an entrepreneurial environment. The first year we were married, we had an idea for a product. We built a working prototype, identified the market, price point, distribution channels, and then hit a roadblock. We didn’t have the knowledge or financial resources to take our idea any further. Within a year, an almost identical product entered the market. That experience stung. After both working corporate jobs for seven to eight years, we were struck by our next product idea. This time, we felt that we had the knowledge and experience as well as were in a much better financial position. Not to say that it was an easy road, but we were much more prepared for the journey. That first product-based business led to many other businesses, some offering products and some services.

Nicole Gagner: I’ve always really liked art and creativity. I’m fascinated by other creative people also. I didn’t realize anything creative could genuinely be a career until I went to college and met art professors who had families and careers. I realized starving artist didn’t have to be a real thing. I had a degree in art, but I did art on the side until I came to the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which has an artist in residency program that allows me to teach other people art, be an artist, and support myself. It's really hard for me to turn off my entrepreneurial brain and just make art for the fun of making art. They are completely linked for me -- creativity and connecting to other people. One of the easy ways to do that is going to market, selling things, teaching classes, and be paid for my time. Renee Murrish: I went into business administration because my passion is making clients' lives better and after many years of working in the corporate world, my husband and I started a family. Passions just do not go away, so I needed to invent a way I could still do my passion and also meet my family's needs and goals from that dream Signature Events was born in 2014 and event planning was the perfect match. Our tagline says it all, "Be A Guest at Your Own Event"

Proprietors: Evan and Ganya Anderson Founded: 2010 Employees: 2 How would you describe your business in 30 words or less? We are an engineering prototyping product development service -turning ideas into reality and taking something from a scribble on a napkin to a working prototype.
Jose Sanchez: It was amazing how much money as a pest control technician you were making for (another) company. I thought, what if I start myself? I have the experience. I have the knowledge. I can start my own company. It took me eight months. Then, establishing the company took one more year (in California). This is where it becomes difficult. You try to get a loan, and they say you need to do this or that first... I focused more on commercial properties in downtown Los Angeles. After two years, most of my businesses became commercial properties in downtown L.A. I spent pretty much 24-hours in downtown L.A. just killing bedbugs. During COVID, the work dried up. We came to visit a friend in Bismarck-Mandan. We were driving around the city, and my kids were saying how beautiful the city was. We drove around schools, my daughter was screaming look how beautiful that school is. There were no gates, no fences around the school. My son asked if we could move. When we went back home, the more we talked about it, it was more serious. My daughter was telling me, “Daddy we need to consider moving to Bismarck. It looks beautiful and safer.” My wife said it would be a nice place to retire. My daughter feels totally safe walking around. She couldn’t do that in California at all.

Jed Geer: From the time I could mow lawns, I was mowing lawns in my hometown. I mowed the cemetery across the street. That moved into a painting company. My mom was a schoolteacher, so she painted houses in the summer. I had started a little painting company. I guess I’ve always been selling. It’s the thrill of the sale. It’s also finding a need to be filled. That’s the story of the driving school. When our kids needed to learn how to drive, we found driving schools were booked out a year in advance. When My mom stopped teaching music, she started a screen printing and embroidery clothing business when I was in fourth or fifth grade. Watching her run her own business and be her own boss -- there are a lot of mentorships lessons there. She was my mentor until she passed away in 2019.

WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHERS IN YOUR INDUSTRY? Sanchez: I treat everybody as a family member. It’s not a customer; I treat everybody like they are my own grandma, my own sisters, or brothers. This lady wanted me to spray her house every single month. We told her, “You don’t need pest control every single month. I said we can spray your house every three months.” She said, “You don’t want to make the money?” I said, “I want to be honest with you. I don’t want you to pay for a service you don’t need.” Murrish: We are an event planning company that strictly focuses on planning your event. If our clients need other elements like a decorator, entertainment, catering, or a venue etc., we find those elements that fit their budget and vision. Clients will choose the professional they want to meet with, we set up and attend those meetings, and execute your event from start to finish. Geer: The reason for starting (our businesses) was to fill a need. That’s what keeps me starting businesses. If there is a need, we will try to fill that. There’s a lot of perks to owning your business, being your own boss. You have to be self-motivated. Owning your own business -- it’s just the freedom. We’ve been blessed to travel around the world. Things that being your own boss allow you to do.

CONNECTION | FEATURE IN YOUR YEARS OF OPERATION, WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED?
Murrish: Owning a business is a lot of hard work and dedication, which also makes me proud of what we as a family have accomplished. Being flexible in your business vision is most important. In 2014, I had a specific vision of what my company was going to be. Some business detours came and about two years ago, it hit me that being flexible and having to change course with your business is NOT a failure. Sometimes competition will label it as a failure and that is hard to take, always remember some detours are steps to something greater. Gagner: So much. The biggest thing I have learned is creativity isn’t a limited resource. The more creative things that I’m putting out, the more other people are putting out there. It feeds off each other. That has really led my business model also. I think every wall should be painted with a mural. I don’t see walls as a limited resource. We can build more walls and paint more murals. Evan Anderson: We keep this running list of the highest and lowest points in our entrepreneurial journey. They truly represent the roller coaster ride that is owning a business. It is a great reminder that those ups and downs are normal and expected. Geer: You have to get innovative to stay ahead of the curve. That has become way more evident in the last couple years during COVID. With innovation, you have to be always thinking and ready to pivot... Always being willing to try new things. Listening to your employees. I need to learn to train people to do things rather than trying to do them all myself.
Proprietors: Nicole Gagner and Scott Grandi-Hill Founded: 2016 Employees: 2 How would you describe your business in 30 words or less? The thing that ties all three businesses together is that we encourage creativity and community connections. Meadowlark Mercantile encourages other artists. Painter Nicole is teaching art and showing my own art. Morningside Heights Provisions is creativity in food making your brats and sandwiches more interesting.

Proprietors: Renee Murrish Founded: 2014 Employees: Renee and family How would you describe your business in 30 words or less? We are an event planning company. We have a venue. We also have an event gallery -- it’s a free service to the public to help plan their events. It displays numerous companies in the area and surrounding areas for every element of the event.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE KEY MILESTONES AND GOALS FOR YOUR BUSINESSES?
Sanchez: (Milestone) Hiring employees. Derek was coming from a lot of trouble, from a lot of issues. Somebody talked to me about him, and I was able to use him, and he became a really important part of Unitech. He was homeless for a couple months. I brought him in... I learned more from him than he learned from me. You really see life differently when you see how difficult life is for someone else. Hiring Derek was one of the best things that happened when he came aboard. Evan Anderson: (Goal) We are actively trying to slow down a bit. We’ve got more work than we can effectively manage right now. We don’t like to disappoint people. We have some of our own products that we would like to put a little more focus into. Part of it is work-life balance. We need more time on the bikes. We love everything about what we do. We recognize we could continue doing this for more decades full-speed ahead, so the slowdown will probably come with some kicking screaming.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER ENTREPRENEURS?
Geer: Do your homework. I didn’t do that all the time. With Send It! 24/7 Cornhole, the City of Mandan has a lot of programs out there that I am just learning about now. Business assistance programs, business plans, important things that probably aren’t as fun, but they will allow you to be successful. Murrish: It's worth repeating that business vision detours are NOT failures they are likely steps to greater things... be patient... let the detour ride out. There are times when you need to be hard on yourself... when you have done your best and given your all... then give yourself some grace... after all, we all are still human! Mistakes happen, learn from them... improve... move forward. For me, my husband is my factual balance, and I so love him for that. As an entrepreneur, by being the authentic you, you will attract the exact clients you want and need. Gagner: Be okay with failing, because it’s part of learning. Be okay with starting before you feel ready. In the learning phase you’re gathering ideas, but you can only stay in that for so long. Eventually you have to jump in and learn as you go.
CONNECTION | FEATURE WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE ENTREPRENEURSHIP CLIMATE OF BISMARCK-MANDAN? Gagner: It’s wide open. Any weirdo idea that I’ve thrown out there, somebody has told me to try it and been very supportive of it. There are a lot of people like myself who moved away and say “Why can’t we do this back home,” and they come back and do it. There are going to be more entrepreneurs like that.
Sanchez: It was so easy. It was so simple. The state is very welcoming. I feel like the more businesses we bring to Bismarck-Mandan, it’s going to expand. It’s going to grow. I felt really blessed that we were here in Bismarck-Mandan. Starting the business was really simple. It took me less than a week to open Unitech again. I had to take some licensing classes and got some help from the agriculture people. Everybody that I talked to really cared about what I was doing. Everybody was so helpful that I couldn’t believe it. It took me one week versus close to one year in California.
Ganya Anderson: We love the Bismarck-Mandan community of entrepreneurs. We started our first businesses in Denver. Although they had a great chamber and we met some very nice business owners, the climate was not even close to what we have experienced here. The level of cooperation and collaboration is unbelievable. There is this network of support between entrepreneurs and also with the business partners like banks, insurance companies, etc. that serve them. We are on the organizing committee for 1 Million Cups where every Wednesday morning at Dakota Stage, community members gather to learn about a start-up entrepreneur, to ask great questions and offer suggestions. The level of support and sense of community is unbelievable. That same feeling exists on the patio here at the Chamber EDC on Thursdays in the summer. We honestly wouldn’t want to own a business anywhere else.

At 1st Geer, we provide behind the wheel training for permitted drivers looking to get their license. At the nutrition shops, we provide healthy alternative for meals on the go. At Farmers Union Insurance, we help people with all of their insurance needs. There’s really nothing we can’t do here.

Eric Ahmann AMICI PIZZA COMPANY Tell us about yourself and your role within your business. A: My name is Eric Ahmann. I am co-owner of Amici Pizza Company, along with Jeff Buchholtz. I grew up in Minot, North Dakota before attending UND and moving to Santa Fe, N.M. to start a family. I’ve been back in Bismarck for about 11 years, working in the restaurant and food distribution industries. My wife, Jessica, works for CHI St. Alexius and I have three kids who attend school in Bismarck.

Briefly tell us the history behind Amici Pizza Company and how you got started. A: We opened Amici Pizza Company in June 2020. Jeff and I had been kicking around the idea of opening some sort of restaurant in the northeast part of Bismarck for a few years. I had years of experience in the restaurant industry, specifically high-end pizza. We felt like we could offer something different than what Bismarck had to offer, in a location that was in desperate need of some restaurants.
CONNECTION | MEMBER PROFILE How has the growth of Bismarck-Mandan impacted Amici Pizza Company? A: The residential growth in northeast Bismarck has been huge for us. We’ve done our best to become a “neighborhood pizzeria,” and have developed some great regular customers who can walk or ride their bike to get a pizza. As the new school opens in the Silver Ranch development, we hope the growth continues and we can capture a whole new clientele. What trends are taking place in your industry? A: Fresh made and locally sourced are some of the major trends in our industry. We are lucky enough to live in a part of the country that produces some of the best flour and pasta available, and we make sure we take advantage of that. All of the flour for our pizza crust and our pasta are produced right here in North Dakota. We love that we’re able to offer our guests an amazing product and keep our dollars close to home.
Amici Pizza Company became a member in 2020, why do you continue to renew? A: Being a member of the Chamber EDC is a great way to see what else is happening in our business community. We’re only strong if we support each other, and I think being a member helps us stay connected with others who are dealing with some of the same challenges we are. What should other Chamber EDC members know about Amici Pizza Company that may assist them? A: We’re always looking for new ways to grow our business. Whether that means catering opportunities, fundraisers for different groups, or a second location. We’re proud of the business we’ve developed and we hope that shows in the service we give and the product we serve.
Have there been any monumental changes within your industry that you’ve had to deal with? A: The largest one has obviously been the worldwide pandemic. We opened about three months after everything was shut down, and had to make some pretty large changes to our business model to survive it. This has all lead to industry wide shortages in products and massive inflation. It’s become a weekly task to take a look at the market and see what is going to available from our distributors, and find ways to adapt to product shortages. Trying to find ways to serve a consistent product to customers without losing money. What does the future of Amici Pizza Company look like and the industry as a whole look like to you? A: We would love to see the Amici Pizza Company brand grow. We would eventually like to look at another location in Bismarck-Mandan, and expand to other parts of the state. The struggles with labor right now have slowed the growth a little, but at some point we see ourselves expanding. Moving forward, I think operators are going to have to find more efficient ways to work. Knowing there’s less available help, I think you need to adapt your menu to reflect that. That may mean shrinking the menu slightly, or finding shortcuts in production of product.

CHAMBER EDC HOSTS EDUCATOR EXPERIENCE Educator Experience, an annual program aimed at connecting educators with industry, wrapped up its 2022 session, that spanned the week of June 6th. This unique workshop aims to give teachers deeper insight into the “real world” applications of what they are teaching in classrooms and seeing the career and industries that their students may be able to prepare for and pursue. Answering the question of “but when will we use this in real life?” isn’t always easy, but the many organizations that welcomed our 10 educators did a fantastic job illustrating how the classroom directly translates into careers. The variety of industries and organizations was vast, but within the week, they touched on many vital parts of our thriving community. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIC PLAN CONTINUES In late May, the Chamber EDC hosted the consulting group that is developing the economic development strategic plan. Next Move Group spent three days in Bismarck Mandan getting acquainted with the community. During their time here Chamber EDC staff toured them around Bismarck Mandan. The group also spent time interviewing community stakeholders and leaders as well as conducting focus groups to gather information about the opportunities and weaknesses of the area. They ended the three days with a presentation where they discussed what they heard over the three days, what similar communities are doing, and next steps for the strategic plan. BUSINESS ASSISTANCE PROGRAM OF THE MONTH: BISMARCK VISION FUND The Bismarck Vision Fund is a city-sales-tax-supported fund that provides assistance to businesses that wish to relocate to or expand in Bismarck. The Vision Fund can offer flexible assortment of financing opportunities, such as interest buy downs, reduced interest loans, equity positions and other individually tailored financial incentives and exemptions. Overall, the consultants were excited about the opportunities in Bismarck Mandan and were impressed with the community’s character and appearance. Next Move Group is planning another visit in July with a final plan expected to be completed in the fall.
COST OF LIVING INFORMATION RELEASED
The 2022 1st quarter Cost of Living Index (COLI) was released in May. The COLI is put together by the Center for Regional Economic Competitiveness and is an analysis of average prices submitted by over 290 urban areas across the United States. The COLI compares all 297 submitted urban areas with a score of 100 being average.
City
The information collected is also used to populate the Cost of Living Calculator on the Chamber EDC website. The calculator determines what salary someone would need to earn in Bismarck-Mandan to compare to what that person is earning in any of the other 296 urban areas. Both the index and the calculator assist the Chamber EDC is our talent attraction efforts. The comparison to other area communities is shown below.

ACCEPTING LEADERSHIP BISMARCK-MANDAN APPLICATIONS FOR 2022-2023 Leadership Bismarck-Mandan is now accepting applications for the Class of 2023. Up to 18 applicants will be accepted into the program. Participants delve into today’s most compelling issues. Community experts create issue day sessions on topics relevant to the Bismarck-Mandan area, including: economic development, energy, agriculture, legislation, political involvement, human services, law enforcement, military, emergency services, arts, leisure, healthcare, and education. Most issue days are half day. Highlights of the program include a full day at the Capitol during the legislative session, a full day retreat, and a graduation ceremony. Following the issue days, the class will divide into groups, select a community project they are passionate about and work to make that field project into reality.

BIDS APPROVED FOR MANDAN TENNIS CENTER
SLEEPY HOLLOW ANNOUNCES SUMMER SEASON
The Mandan Tennis Center bids were approved by the Mandan Park Board at the June 13 board meeting.
Celebrating 33 years of outdoor Broadway-style musical theatre at Sleepy Hollow Arts Park, the 2022 season shows are LITTLE MERMAID JR. July 14-23, directed by Amanda Perry and LEGALLY BLONDE, July 28-Aug. 6, directed by Casey Paradies. The Rising Stars, directed by Brittany Bearsheart, provide pre-show entertainment before LITTLE MERMAID. Shows are at 8:00pm. Sign language Interpretation by Cory Quist is on July 21st and August 5th.
The facility, located at 520 26th Street NE, will include 41,600 square feet inside the dome featuring six tennis courts. Three of the courts will be multi-striped to allow for 10 pickleball courts. Outside the dome will include a 3,000 square foot welcome center and four outdoor pickleball courts. The Mandan Tennis Center parking lot will serve as dual purpose for the Mandan Tennis Center and the Starion Sports Complex. This facility will serve a growing need in our community for tennis and pickleball and will be available to boys and girls tennis teams and summer parks and recreation programs. The dome will have the potential to host regional and state high school tournaments, college matches, USTA sanctioned tournaments, and USAPA sanctioned tournaments. The dome will also allow for tennis and pickleball lessons and leagues to be played in the fall, winter, and spring months.
This is followed by a 7:00pm August 10th concert at Sleepy Hollow’s Bud’s Corner entitled AN EVENING OF GREAT JAZZ: GUITAR SUMMIT organized by jazz artist, Scott Prebys. Sleepy Hollow’s mission is to play a significant role in the welfare and educational growth of our citizens while nurturing youth by providing quality pre-professional educational opportunities in the arts that result in the cultural enrichment of our communities and state. Sleepy Hollow provides unique youth development programs that result in high quality entertainment in an attractive outdoor setting, attracting thousands of people every year. It is the only programming of its kind in the entire state. In 2021, the Broadway-style musicals alone attracted 13,526 people. FIRST COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION EXPANDS INTO MANDAN
BSC RECEIVES NJCAA GRANT TO SUPPORT NEW PROGRAMS Bismarck State College (BSC) is the recipient of a $2,000 Sport Opportunity Grant from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Foundation to support its new men’s and women’s track and field and cross country programs. The new funding will be used towards equipment for the new athletic programs. Mystics head cross country and track and field coach Jamison Dietrich has already begun recruiting to build the programs’ rosters. The goal is to add a minimum of 60 men and women student-athletes to compete starting in fall 2022.
First Community Credit Union (FCCU) is proud to announce their new location in Mandan is now open at 4614 Memorial Highway, Mandan. This new facility is just over 20,689 total square feet, three stories high, constructed of structural steel and sit on 1.58 acres. With a maximum occupancy of 330 people, this building features an open atrium lobby, multiple conference rooms, safety deposit box room, 14 offices, a large breakroom with a full kitchen and walk out open patio, three drive-up lanes and a drive-up ATM. This new Mandan branch will also have tenants and a 1,336 square foot community room, open for the public, with an occupancy of 89 people.
BSC is part of the Mon-Dak Conference in the NJCAA but will compete at various collegiate meets, including against four-year universities. The athletes’ recorded results are used to qualify for the NJCAA national championships. While BSC has the MDU Resources Community Bowl – one of the state’s best outdoor track facilities – on its campus, the college hasn’t had a track and field or cross-country program since 1985.

UNIVERSITY OF MARY’S CLINICAL EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY PROGRAM EARNS CONTINUED 10-YEAR ACCREDITATION The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), has awarded continuing accreditation to University of Mary’s Clinical Exercise Physiology (CEP) master’s program. The recent peer review conducted by the Committee on Accreditation for the Exercise Sciences (CoAES) and CAAHEP’s Board of Directors recognizes the program’s compliance with the nationally established accreditation standards. “The commission commends you and your colleagues for your commitment to continuous quality improvement in education, as demonstrated by your participation in program accreditation,” stated CAAHEP President Dr. Donald Balasa, in a congratulatory letter to University of Mary. “The accreditation standards are established by CAAHEP, CoAES, American College of Sports Medicine, American Council on Exercise, American Kinesiotherapy Association, American Red Cross, National Academy of Sports Medicine, and National Council on Strength and Fitness.”

The CEP program at the University of Mary is one of only 11 accredited in the entire US and is under the popular Saint Gianna School of Health Sciences. The master of science program is a two-year program taught with a blended format, combining online instruction with five on-site hands-on lab weeks and clinical internships, to students who are making a difference in peoples’ lives everyday through many exciting careers associated with this degree, such as: cardiac rehabilitation; pulmonary rehabilitation; directing and coordinating supervised exercise programs for people with chronic conditions and disease like cancer, Parkinson’s Disease, diabetes, arthritis, obesity, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis, etc., for whom exercise is part of the treatment and management; clinical research coordinators, researchers; diagnostic stress test technicians; strength and conditioning practitioners; higher education instructors; and directors and coordinators of primary prevention exercise programs. “These are some of America’s heroes on the frontlines of healthcare,” said Dr. Jill Nustad, professor and chair of the Exercise Physiology Department in the Saint Gianna School of Health Sciences. “We’ve had 100 percent job placement rate with our graduates in the field for the last four years, and we embrace Saint Gianna Beretta Molla’s model of wisdom, intelligence, and courage within our service-learning emphasis. University of Mary’s Department of Exercise Physiology houses a master’s program in CEP and bachelor’s in exercise science (EXS). Both programs have earned accreditation from CAAHEP. CEP is considered a rehab science and is a growing professional field, responding to the exercise needs and demands for persons with chronic disease and conditions. Cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation facilities employ the majority of CEPs. Mary’s CEP program was the first program delivered via a blended hybrid model — online and in-person — to be accredited, and I believe still holds that recognition.” According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), there is an expected 13 percent job growth in this career field. CAAHEP says the next comprehensive evaluation of the program, including a site review, is scheduled to occur no later than 2032.

The project converted an obsolete gravel pit (brownfield) into a new industrial rail park; relocated rail-served operations from downtown to the rail park; and replaced the old rail line with a 1.6-mile linear park and trail, along with a new “complete street” and signaled intersection on US Hwy 2. KLJ Engineering (KLJ), in partnership with Alta Planning + Design, provided environmental documentation related to decommissioning of key sites related to the project, including a former grain elevator, two gas station facilities, an agronomy center (fertilizer plant), a former gravel pit overlapping a state Superfund site, and a Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railroad site.
They also assisted in securing project funding, supporting dozens of public engagement initiatives, stormwater design including detention and treatment, lighting and electrical design, conversion of a railroad bridge for pedestrian use, a new signalized intersection, competitive project bidding, and construction oversight and administration. The $40 MM public-private partnership project has catalyzed reinvestment in the area. By mitigating environmental impacts at more than a dozen sites, and reorganizing rail service, the project spurred new development of housing, businesses, and lifestyle amenities across Kalispell’s Core Area, while enhancing rail access for businesses. An estimated $200 MM in private redevelopment is complete, underway, and in the planning stages as a direct result of the project, transforming the area socially, economically, and environmentally for the City’s 24,500 residents and more than 3 million visitors annually.

Many tools, including therapy, support groups, social media, and other community resources, are available to connect those affected by cancer with other people facing similar feelings and emotions. Support groups can connect patients, caregivers, and others for shared support, understanding, and resources. A support group coordinator moderates each group offered by the Bismarck Cancer Center to create a confidential and safe place for all members. Support groups are a forum for openly discussing fear and emotions that might be uncomfortable discussing with persons outside the group. Group sessions are open to all, and there is no need to register in advance. Q: AS COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS ARE LIFTED, HOW SHOULD EMPLOYERS PROCEED WITH SURVEILLANCE EXAMINATIONS TO REMAIN OSHA-COMPLIANT? A: Throughout most of the pandemic,
surveillance exams like audiograms and pulmonary function tests (PFTs) were not available at occupational medicine clinics. OSHA understood the risk of performing these tests during the pandemic and determined that employers would not be in violation of the standard if they were unable to have these services performed. Now that surveillance exams are available again, employers should resume audiograms and PFTs for employees covered by OSHA standards. The employer should clearly document that they intended to have these services performed during the pandemic but that their medical provider was not performing them due to the increased health risk. Employers do not need to have multiples of each test performed to catch up from those missed in 2020 and 2021. They only need to resume these tests as required by the OSHA standard they are following.
